Trees of The Wretched

Chapter 1

Never touch the Trees of The Wretched

For they are covered in malice, deceit and antagonism

Of the person who cried and planted it.

"Remember students, no one is to touch the Trees, gloves must be on at all times." I shouted, making sure my voice reaches their ears, as well as their brains. The students quietly followed my directions. "I will now give you a five minute tour, make sure you listen carefully, I will not repeat it and you won't get a chance to erase your mistakes, this career choice is already dangerous as it is." I gulped down water before starting the lecture. "I'm Aracely Cervantes, your mentor for today. I teach about the Trees of The Wretched along with my colleagues that you might meet later today." I looked around to find Amiya Puckett, my colleague, filming my first mentorship experience. I sighed and continued. "The Trees of The Wretched, as spine-chilling the name sounds, this tree actually has the ability to kill people. This came into being because of the tree of malice that grows in one's mind." I said and the lights turned off, the projector projecting a human mind with a black tree slowly growing. "We unconsciously feed dark thoughts to it, think ill and this disease spreads and the tears that fall to the ground turns into the tree, which eventually bears a fruit which multiplies the bad things."

"What happens to the person who cries?" One of the students asked.

"The person to whom this tree belongs simply becomes a criminal. Due to their alarming thoughts against humanity, they are put in jail, or simply executed. " I replied.

"If the person changes, does the tree vanish along with their hatred?" Another student asked. This reminded me of when I was a student, I had asked the same question. I smiled.

"Such a thing hasn't happened yet. We are yet to witness such a miracle or such a person who takes back all the hatred and depression due to or for humanity." I sighed again. Wondering what would be the state of the world if such a thing happened. Would the higher ups be in turmoil? "Direct contact with the tree means giving it your soul and heart." I said and moved forward to the next room where Louvel was waiting. "If it feeds on negative energy then it also feeds on the soul and hearts." I stopped and turned back to face them. "Especially on kids like you." Once I saw their terrified faces and heard their gasps, turned again and started walking with the feeling of superiority flowing in me. The smile on my face wouldn't go for the whole day. "Students please step in this room. Here to guide you and teach you about how to nurture these plants is my colleague. Hope you learn a lot." I said and saw them walk inside. The door closed in front of me and I relaxed.

"You didn't have to scare the kids, you know." Amiya said next to me. I slumped against her shoulder. "One of the students here is Professor Song's Son. Of course I had to scare them the way he did to me. I vowed to pay him back for telling me all the scary details, which he absolutely didn't have to."

"I'm surprised you didn't grow a Wretched Tree yet. You are so full of dark thoughts and revenge." She laughed, nudging me and walking towards the cafeteria.

"Shouldn't you be saying this for Louvel? It feels as if he has been forced to carry the weight of all his ancestors and was given the pessimistic tendencies of them all for free." I said taking my favorite peri-peri chicken burrito and walking towards our designated table .

"Hey, don't don't roast your best friend." Amiya said, sarcastically.

"Best friend who?" Just then, the so-called 'best friend' walked in.

"You, Mr.Cardenas." she said

"How was the experience?" I asked.

"It is so hard pretending to be nice." He said and stole one bite of my burrito. I gasped and hit him. "Their questions were so stupid I suppressed the urge to throw them out."

"Mr. Song's son was there apparently. " Amiya said.

"I recognized him. I sent him glares every time he made eye contact."

"Damn, bruh. You are evil." I smirked.

"I thought you knew."

"Attention! Attention! All the mentors are to be reported to the emergency room urgently! Attention! Attention!" We heard the announcement and rushed to the emergency room.

"I swear," Louvel said while running. "If it is one of those stupid students, I'll personally make their life hell since they survived."

"A student accidentally touched the tree bare handed." Yousef Afreedi explained as soon as we got inside, I heard Louvel cursing not so secretly. "Eunice and Zachariah are checking on the student, you can know more about the incident from Prince and since he was present at the moment."

"Hey there." Prince said entering the room after calming down the students.

"Prince, what the heck just happened?" I asked, looking at the student through the glass, his hand, from which he probably touched, was black and his body blue. There was foam forming on his mouth.

"This case was the weirdest since 2013. Apparently he heard the tree calling him."

As soon as words left his mouth, the atmosphere changed. We knew what this meant, but we all had hoped this wouldn't have happened. I felt Louvel's eyes on me. This had happened before, but there were no casualties that time. Or so I thought.
