I've put a decidedly Halloween twist on my desk's right hand side, considering that the stores are putting all their pumpkins out. Bog Witch to Halloween Party City mode: Engage! (The shaky hand is a feature, not a bug.)

did some planty stuff today!
mainly, found places for all my tradescantia now they're back home again (i brought them to work while friend was over and is allergic to them)
the tradescantia:
Tumblr media
these are:
tradescantia zebrina 'burgundy' (deep purple, green stripes)
tradescantia blossfeldiana 'Nanouk' (light pink & green stripes)
tradescantia pallida 'purple heart' (the ones in the front right)
tradescantia albiflora albovitatta (the green & yellow/white one)
the places: the living room! (left before, right after)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this involved moving my grow light set up around -- this is where i keep my hoyas and pilea pepperomia! i put my dracaena and the t. burgundy & t. nanouk under the lights, because if they get sufficient light they look sooo good bushy (instead of leggy). only time will tell if this ends up burning them, which, has happening to the nanouk before lol.
i moved the dracaena there bc he is the odd one out along my pothos wall and i want to see what more light does for him
also moved t. purple heart above bc it looks pretty cascading and maybe...itll catch the grow light and get more purple...
the places: my bedroom
Tumblr media
1st is near my headboard; usually t.albiflora is in a nice, deep red pot, and not next to my neon pothos, so he kinda looks almost lackluster next to my neon lol
Tumblr media
2nd is on my 'pothos wall'; i might put it on the higher shelf, but i do love the cascading effect to break up bushiness & fill in white space!
Tumblr media
3rd is right by my desk, and my string of turtles and t. burgundy can finally be reunited :) i have gotta figure out how the heck to make these guys cascade though
there's a large t. burgundy still at work, and my mom has my rooted cutting of t. nanouk, so i'll have to find places for those but...thats for later me to figure out lol
i also watered all the tradescantia with some mosquito bits-water (i'd steeped it a couple days ago) because there's been random gnats in the apartment and i can't friggin figure out where they're coming from!!! they might also be fruit flies from the kitchen but better safe than sorry!!! the newcomers must be cleansed!!!!

tanks todaaay, I've taken out a ton of the hornwort cuz I've decided i don't love it lol it just sheds needles everywhere, grows sooo fast and i don't think plinko likes it on his fins. leaving a lot of the floaters on the 10 cuz everyone seems to like lower light.
I've put a hang on back filter with plinko because a) he's been sluggish the last few days and i got worried the sponge wasn't established all the way (water tests come out ok), so borrowed filter media from the 10 and b) the h.o.b. will ultimately go on the new 10 which will hopefully be plink's new house. and i use the h.o.b.s on both tanks to propagate spider plants and pepperomia (xtra filtration, looks cool)
and he is showing off with a glorious flare which my camera refuses to focus on lmao

Greetings ^^ I'm another Chara fictive (you may call me Gold) and I think the white substance you saw under a pot may be diatomaceous earth, which has many uses, but the most relevant is as an insecticide that is safe to vertebrates! It removes the lipid/fatty coating from their bodies and causes them to dehydrate. It's likely being used there to prevent bugs from reaching a plant that it particularly susceptible to them.
While diatomaceous earth is technically edible, the variant used as a plant substrate and insecticide is not graded for human consumption, and it is probably best to not touch it, particularly if it has been sitting out for bugs to get into it. I hope this helps! <3
Hey Gold! Actually I DID get another ask like this on my personal blog that said it was perlite . But turns out its not! It was sugar this WHOLE time. And i remember i asked our housemate why she put sugar there and she told me “its to distract the ants” and TBH i dont know if that actually worked but that baby plant seems to be doing ok .. ?? Im so confused BAHAHA. I guess for context that one plant (i think it’s a pepperomia ??) got infested with spidermites or something and just died but then a few days after it was just soil some baby leaves started sprouting and its been trying to live ever since. There arent anymore pests since its been treated and quarantined for a long time (even until now lol) but yeah. One of the biggest problems was ants i think lol. And that whole thing happened like a few months ago
Also i THINK we do have diamotaceous earth in the house but no one’s touched it? BUT YEAH TBH either way now that you mentioned there’d be bugs all over it i guess it’d be the same with the sugar.... I mean they do say ants are good for you but still bahaha. ALSO THANK YOU FOR THE INFO!!! I literally know like not much about plants. I just water Chara’s plants for them since i front so much. Its a cool read!

Hey! I live in Sydney and was wondering what indoor plans are the best to have? I'm worried even if I take really good care of them, the heat might get to them, do you have any advice?
yay! honestly I’ve never had a problem with the heat with indoor plants, it’s always been the cold in winter that’s been a problem. I have a soft spot for jungle plants though and some of them are so dramatic lol
My fav non-fussy all stars that thrive in sydney:
*Alocasias (amazonica and black velvet are my favs)*Heart shaped philodendron*Monstera (so many more other than deliciosa, siltepecana is my current fav)*Rabbits foot fern *Pepperomias*Fiddle leaf philodendron *Silver sword Philodendron *Red wings PhilodendronI could list all the varieties of philodendron really, they are so forgiving! These are just the easier to find kinds. If you have a spot that gets direct sun maybe try an acalypha hispida (omg google them, they are beautiful and weird and feel amazing) or just get a bunch of succulents maybe? Donkey’s tail and string of pearls oo yeah nice

Planted 23 nearly dead marigolds, and potted the rooted Pepperomia my neighbor gave me! Thank you neighbor! My soul is freaky. Sand really. An I have a much better understanding of why my patio floods now. We thought we drenched the ground before digging. Nope. Took 3 tries with me stirring the dirt and water together I order to not have bone dry sand. (It rained hard 2 days ago and had sprinkling on and off overnight. That sand repels water. A it would run off in weird beads at first, then just pool there. Not sinking in. It also explains why nothing was really living there. It’s not really been super dry here. 🤔🧐 hmm. Ah well! I had a nice time ‘gardening’ with Larry. I hope those live. I have 2 other plants that need repotting too. Maybe tomorrow. ***and... the hose actually landed that way! I told Larry not to touch it went and got my phone dirt caked hands and all!
