Loser Round 6: Maria Ushiromiya (Umineko: When They Cry) vs. Ken Amada (Persona 3)
Tumblr media
Propaganda below the cut:
Maria Ushiromiya (9):
She's really obsessed with occult and witch stuff and acts inappropriately when her family gets murdered because she was told by the culprit that everyone was going to the Golden Land (a super special witch afterlife where you get whatever you want). She also has meltdowns like any autistic child. Because of this, some Umineko fans say that she deserves to get abused by her mother.
----
People really do be saying that this literal nine year old who's been abused and neglected by her mom for her whole life is evil
----
Some people in the Umineko fandom have decided that she's annoying because she's a 9 year old with autism. Personally I think she's based. She has a hard life but still tries her hardest to see the goodness in everything. She's kind, even feeling sorry for a wilting flower and hoping it'll get better. She's a very smart young girl who just isn't given the proper love a child needs from their parents to thrive. She deserved SO, SO much better than the cards life dealt her. I mustn't talk too much else I'll get emotional but Maria is peak.Best autistic witch girl.
Ken Amada (11):
y'all are all for "murder and revenge plots" until is a 10 y/o boy who watched his mother die and started to become conflicted after realizing his moms killer is a secretly kind traumatized teenager to the point where the 10 y/o boy attempts to kill himself by giving himself up to assassins.
bro he's 10.
----
ken amada is such an interesting character with the unfortunate circumstances of having little screentime and atlus deciding to ruin his reputation forever by giving him a romance choice in the fem protag route. ken is a child who lost his mother at NINE. nobody ever believed him when he said that she was murdered, and that he saw who killed her. hes miserable, and all everyone around him does is give him sympathy while hes suffering and was forced to grow up before even going into middle school. hes angry and determined to get revenge on the person who killed his mother, and he doesnt even see the own value in living anymore beyond getting that revenge. hes more mature than most of his peers, and is desperate to be seen as an adult.but at the same time, he is still a child who likes superhero shows.
----
OH GOD WHERE DO I START
First there's the normal "The fandom hates kids" complaints of "He's so whiny" "he's so annoying" "oh my god kid just SHUT UP" y'know, the typical fandom stuff that makes you wonder if these people have ever talked to a child in their life
Second, there's (spoilers)...
October 4th, and the ENTIRE FANDOM is calling this kid a murderer.
For context, the moment in question doesn't necessarily paint him in the best light but its still understandable. Your team is going on a mission while Ken and another character named Shinjiro are away. In an alleyway, they have a talk where it is revealed that on that night a year priar to the game, Kens mom was killed in that allleyway by Shinjiro's Persona (Which, by the Rules of the Game Lore, basically means By Shinjiro). Ken tried to tell the authorities, the authorities didn't believe him because Magic Reasons and the death was ruled an accident.
Of course Ken is Fucking Pissed and wants revenge
However, because of Talk, he ACTIVELY CALMS DOWN, and realises "Hey, I probably shouldn't kill someone. Despite them, y'know, killing my mom"
HOWEVER REVOLVER JESUS COMES IN AND RUINS EVERYTHING BY SHOOTING SHINJIRO. AND LIKE, IF YOU PLAY P3P YOU CAN /AVOID THE DEATH THING/
AND EVERYONE BLAMES /KEN/. AND ONLY KEN.
And third (yes, there's a THIRD) IS THE FUCKING FEMC ROMANCE THING. WHICH JUST...SHOULDN'T HAVE EXISTED IN THE FIRST PLACE. BUT NOW HE'S "SHOTA BAIT" BECAUSE WE HAVE TO BLAME THE CHILD FOR THE AUTHORITY FIGURE COMING ONTO THEM 😒

Sleeping Beauty Spring: "Prinsessa Ruusunen" ("Princess Briar Rose") (1949 Finnish film)
Tumblr media
The late 1940s saw several enchanting black-and-white live-action film versions of fairy tales released in Europe. The most famous of these is Jean Cocteau's French Beauty and the Beast of 1946; another is the charming Russian Cinderella of 1947. But another, similar film was produced in a country rarely known for its cinema: Finland, where this Sleeping Beauty premiered in 1949.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to watch the film with English subtitles, and I have no knowledge of Finnish. But luckily, there is a detailed English synopsis of the film online, which helped me understand what was happening in each moment.
Set in a stylized 18th century Rococo kingdom, the film's opening scene shows the peasants bringing gifts to the Queen (Mirjam Novero) to celebrate her recovery from an illness. But the Queen and her King (Aarne Laine) are sad because they have no child. (Was her "illness" a miscarriage?) That is, until the beautiful Fairy of Light (Eeva-Kaarina Volanen) foretells the birth of a princess. When the baby Princess Ruusunen is born (her name, the traditional Finnish equivalent of the Grimms' "Briar Rose", just means "little rose"), the King and Queen invite nobility and peasants alike to the feast – as well as the Fairy of Light, and five other good fairies, all youthful beauties in white robes and with long blonde hair. But the buffoonish Cook has lost one of the seven golden plates reserved for fairies, so at the suggestion of an impish little scullery boy named Sam – a comic character throughout the story, who, in a surreal, dreamlike touch, always stays a child even as the princess grows up – the grim, dark-robed Fairy of Death (Enni Rekola) goes uninvited. But of course she comes unexpectedly, and curses Princess Ruusunen to prick her finger at age fifteen and die, which the Fairy of Light can only soften to a hundred-year sleep.
The film's next portion is especially creative, as we spend more time in the princess's childhood than usual. On her fifth birthday, little Ruusunen visits the villagers with her nursemaid, giving them gifts and befriending a five-year-old peasant girl named Sanna. Unfortunately, she also sees a spinning wheel for the the first time and gains an interest. It's now that her parents have every spinning wheel destroyed, except for the one belonging to the castle's spinner Liisa, who confines her work to a secluded tower.
Ten years later, Ruusunen (now played by fifteen-year-old Tuula Usva) again celebrates her birthday by giving to others, this time by handing out roses. This includes a visit to Liisa's tower to give her a rose too... and when Liisa drops off to sleep, the princess indulges her longtime wish to try spinning. The Fairy of Death is there, unseen, and under her steely gaze, Ruusunen pricks her finger. But the subsequent "falling asleep" sequence is especially gentle and sweet in this film. Ruusunen doesn't collapse in a deathlike swoon, but peacefully dozes off in her chair, and the Sandman then arrives to sprinkle his sand throughout the castle. causing the rest of the court to doze off too. Afterwards, the castle is magically covered with climbing roses – thorny, but lush with leaves and flowers throughout the hundred years. A group of friendly gnomes also stay in the castle to watch over the sleepers.
When Prince Florestan (Martti Katajisto) finally arrives, Sanna, now an ancient grandmother, tells him about the sleeping princess. The peasants now wear 19th century dress, but Florestan wears Renaissance clothing for a classic "Prince Charming" look. The Fairy of Death has filled the castle with spiders and webs, but Florestan slays the most monstrous spider (a battle only seen in silhouette – a wise choice to keep us from laughing at the crude spider puppet) and scales the castle wall. He wakes Ruusunen with a chaste kiss on her head, and Cupid's arrow makes them fall in love. The King, Queen, and court awake too, the villagers greet them, the Fairy of Light blesses the prince and princess's union.
This is a sweet, charming Sleeping Beauty, with a gentle atmosphere that blends magic, humor, and warmth. The expanded role of the kingdom's peasants adds an appealing down-to-earth quality, while further charm is added by the comic portrayals of the royal courtiers, the inclusion of magical beings such as elves, the Sandman, and Cupid, and the enhanced role of children in the story. Although neither the sets nor the special effects are very sophisticated, their stylized nature suits a fairy tale, and the musical score is effective too, with shorts songs – charming, if not very memorable – and dance sequences peppered throughout the story.
Both as a unique Sleeping Beauty and as a glimpse into the world of 1940s Finnish film, this production is very much worth seeing.

Fic Teaser: Amaranth
So, this is a preview of my offering for day six of @malflearweek. Day four was a deliberate break, and day five was a less deliberate break because I ended up having to stay 13 hours at work (compared to 'only' 11 hours today). I don't want to rush out more stories I'm not fully satisfied with, so the completed fics for today's and yesterday's prompts will appear...at some point in the future.
Anyway, for now here's this!
His first memory of visiting the Somniel is hazy, dreamlike. Five or six years old, and excited because it was his first trip outside of Firene, to the holy shores of Lythos and then the private sanctum which floated overhead like a cloud. His caretakers impressed the etiquette on him beforehand, how he needed to be on his best behaviour, show due reverence to Queen Lumera and her sleeping child (not that he was capable of causing much trouble back then, besides chattering on silly topics until his breath ran out). A blur of perfect blue skies, delicate white flowers, and curtains of translucent gauze encircling an altar-bed. A figure lying still and silent as the grave, and he had to believe the adults, insisting it wasn't actually death and simply a long, healing slumber.
Queen Lumera's son was a heroic warrior, in the terrible struggle against Fell Dragons a thousand years ago. Struck down by a near-fatal blow, but not before his actions saved all of Elyos for generations to come. Alfred's mother told him the story, and shook her head sadly when he asked if a magical sleep like that would help make him better, too. They aren't Divine Dragons, only humans, so it doesn't work the same way.
Seven years old, and the memories are clearer. That was a bad year, and sometimes he sat miserably confined in a wheelchair, because his legs couldn't be trusted to stand firm, and his lungs couldn't be trusted to draw enough air for activity. Still, when he heard that his family were planning a visit to the Somniel, he begged not to be left behind. He remembers the slow, stubborn struggle of climbing each step to the enchanted bedchamber, to kneel between his parents in prayer, proving he was capable of that without needing to be carried. Queen Lumera waited patiently, indulging a sickly little boy's yearning for inclusion.
Nine years old, and Alfred was growing taller – though not so tall or strong as he wanted – but the figure on the altar looked just the same, peaceful and unchanging. He didn't look injured either, and maybe that meant the spell working on him was almost complete, and soon he'd wake up. Queen Lumera smiled, when Alfred voiced that thought. Perhaps even a goddess liked to hear words of reassurance, sometimes.
Once, Alfred asked her what the Dragon Child was like as an actual child, when he was Alfred's age. Was he obedient or mischievous, lively or shy? What games did he like to play? Did they play the same things a thousand years ago? Instead of answering though, Queen Lumera only said something vague and sad, and then Alfred felt guilty. He'd thought she might enjoy it, reminiscing about when her son was awake, but maybe it only reminded her of what she'd lost. So he didn't ask again, after that.
Eleven, barely. Fatherless and forlorn, in the months since the epidemic's shadow lifted from Firene. Of course they had to wait until all symptoms vanished before travelling, to ensure it couldn't spread. Of course the symptoms lingered in him more than anyone else, brewing restlessness and frustration. He didn't want to act badly though, to upset his mother or sister. For their sake, it was important to try and smile, to be brave for them rather than a burden.
Finally, it was deemed safe. Boarding the ship at Florra Port – the Seablossom which always carried the royal family, with its specially embroidered sails – felt like closing a chapter on their sorrows, as the fresh ocean breezes whirled around him. A return to their normal lives, in a healing realm. Even if only three of them would be crossing to Lythos, this time...
After the standard rituals of their Somniel visit, his mother retired to speak with Queen Lumera alone, in a corner of the tranquil gardens where they wouldn't be disturbed. At the time, Alfred assumed they just wanted a friendly chat, but looking back with an adult's perspective, there were likely politics in play that afternoon, tensions hidden beneath the sunny surface. Mother was worried that Brodia might take advantage of her kingdom's weakened state, wasn't she? She wanted to ask where Lythos stood, if they'd offer support or remain neutral, and didn't like to discuss that in front of the children. Later she'd secure the pact of non-aggression, but it was only in draft at that point, no firm guarantee of safety.
But Alfred wasn't worried, oblivious to such grown-up problems, so while the queens handled matters of state and Vander took Celine to pick peaches in the orchard, he wandered back up to the altar. Trusted as harmless, no longer contagious, and too pious for pranks in a place like this.
Celine sometimes gave him a light scolding, for telling foolish things to the Dragon Child besides prayers. Alfred insisted he'd like it though, hearing something new instead of the same old words repeated every time. Stories of the dolphins who followed the Seablossom, and horse riding lessons, and the delicious marmalade the castle's new chef made. Nothing bad, nothing about plagues or sorrows that might disturb sacred dreams, only the good stuff. Sharing small joys with a person who couldn't go out and find his own.
Maybe if he knew more about all the different things happening in the world, it would encourage him to wake up faster and join in. Queen Lumera's stories made him sound amazing, so surely everyone would be happier, getting to meet him at last.
Thirteen, and another level of appreciation was forming for that lovely face, with its eternally gentle aura. Alfred had enough sense to keep that thought to himself, though. Besides, there was a limit to how attractive someone could actually be, simply lying around, lacking animation or a voice. Like a painting the artist had sketched out, but not filled in the colours yet.
There was no official rule forbidding weird thoughts about deities – and Alfred's family didn't follow those niche religious branches that tried to shame people into chastity – but Queen Lumera showed no inclination to find a king, and never mentioned the father of her child. After a thousand years, maybe personal interests like that just...faded away. Which seemed lonely, but then again, Alfred's mother barely spoke of his father anymore, after a much shorter span of time. It made his chest hurt to dwell on too much – a duller, heavier, less panicky sensation than one of his attacks – and so he decided not to.
Fifteen, and he ignored Celine's sideways stare as he chattered to the dormant dragon, mentioning his retainers and exercise regimes. There was an upcoming festival too, his favourite of the year. Oh, but when the Divine One finally wakes then there's bound to be a huge, once in a lifetime celebration! So he'd better wake soon, because Alfred would hate to miss out on that. Celine sighed, but then in the Somniel's always-perfect sunlight – radiance softened by the layered curtains of this chamber – she smiled a little at her incorrigible older brother.
So the years pass, and Alfred manages to keep going, past milestones everyone feared he'd never reach. Perfecting the training that help strengthen his weak frame, and lessen the strain on his heart. Cheering up everyone who needs to see a happy, prosperous Crown Prince, someone they can place their trust in. The exercises aren't just maintenance, but daily self-reassurance – because if he can run so many laps without struggling, or complete his lance drills without a stumble, then it's solid proof he's okay, pushing back his worries. A sick person, a dying person, couldn't manage that, could they? The sentiments echo back from those around him, building his confidence, even if the muscles don't follow quite the way they should.
The Somniel visits are a family tradition, as much as a religious rite or display of political unity. Not every kingdom does it, but that's up to them. Queen Lumera is always welcoming, ageless and serene. Fresh white roses arrayed over fresh silken sheets, every inch of the chamber pristine, the most holy and well-protected sanctum in all of Elyos. And yet the figure it was arranged for never stirs, time after time.
Until finally, everything explodes into action. Corpse-like monsters invading the land, tainting the bountiful earth of Firene with malice. Rumours that the Divine Dragon was glimpsed soaring over Lythos, when her true form is so rarely taken. The decision to place Alfred on their swiftest ship, to seek guidance from their deity and ensure trouble hasn't spread to those sacred shores.
It has, though. He isn't prepared for what they face in the castle. Corrupted swarming halls where they shouldn't be able to tread, running riot against a small number of attendants. Pure white marble scorched and bloodstained.
And amidst it all, the most beautiful vision Alfred has ever seen. The Divine One, awake and vibrant and glowing with magic, floating on the gold and azure wings of an Emblem.

"Alchemy of Immortality" Completed | 5/5 chapters | 54k words | Rated Mature for violence, sexual themes, death Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood | Guardian/Goblin Korean Drama crossover
Summary: Kim Shin finally has his long, immortal life ended in Seoul, year 2016, but when he wakes up, he's in a world he knows nothing about, over 100 years in the past. It's different than the place he had come from, where Alchemists perform real transmutations that would be considered magic to people in his own world. Whether he's gained a new lease on life, or something is in store for him, he doesn't know, but he wants to make the best of it in the godless land of Amestris. That is, of course, if he ever manages to catch a break. (Brotherhood canon compliant.)

Preview:
Summer, 1904
The letter came too late.
Shin walked through the quiet cemetery, a bouquet of fresh flowers clutched against his chest. He’d been so caught up with dealing with the Ishvalan uprising that he hadn’t been able to visit as much as he would have liked.
Hohenheim disappeared from the village, and the Elric boy’s mother is sick.
It was a simple note, but it didn’t make it to him before Trisha passed. He couldn’t imagine how quickly her condition deteriorated having to raise their two boys alone. Where did you go, Hohenheim? How could you leave them alone?
In front of the stone labeled for Trisha Elric, her sons sat, as silent as death itself.
Alphonse turned first, hearing the footsteps of someone approaching. “Uncle,” his voice came out softly, as if he didn’t believe it himself. He only knew him through the photographs on the wall, and the repeated message that he would be there for them when they needed him.
Edward didn’t attempt to look. “Why are you here?” he asked, the malice softened by his grief. He was hugging his knees as he stared ahead.
Shin knelt behind them and felt the wind as it picked up. Even in this new world, my emotions stir up the weather… He knew what Edward meant, however. He was too late. “I’m sorry, boys.” Their mother was gone, and he’d done nothing to help them.
“Sorry…?” the older brother glanced at him finally. “She said you’d be here when we needed you… He left, and you never showed.” He stood, his small frame shaking. “She got sick… and even then she believed that one of you would come back…” He clenched his fists. “Tell me again that you’re sorry.”
“Ed…” Alphonse got to his feet too.
“She died using all her energy hoping for nothing!” He stomped past the man they were supposed to consider their uncle and headed for the path back out of the cemetery. “Don’t try to act like you care now!”
Al shifted his focus between them quickly, unsure of what to do, but decided to go after his brother instead. “Wait for me, Ed!”
I did it again, didn’t I? Shin stared at the engraving on the headstone. I took your understanding for granted… I told myself I was too busy… but you were suffering. He placed the flowers on the grave as the raindrops started to fall. I’m so sorry, Trisha.
He followed the familiar road to the Rockbell house, where he found Edward, Alphonse, and their friend Winry all sat at the table having a meal. He bowed his head in greeting to Pinako as she appeared.
“You’re soaked!” she chided, taking in his appearance. She’d been warned when the Elric boys arrived that he was in the area, but she couldn’t be sure that he would show up. “Get in here and dry off so you can eat something.”
He did as he was told, not finding much energy to disagree. He waited until the kids were asleep to talk with her. “I’m thankful to you… I promised I would be around… and I abused her trust.”
“I had hoped that someone would be around, with Hohenheim gone… but it’s not your fault. She was aware of what things are happening East of here. Trisha would not hold that over you.” Pinako was smoking a pipe while she spoke. “But you really don’t know anything about Hohenheim?”
“No… He really just… disappeared?”
“She said he needed to go away for a while, and that he asked her to wait for him to return…” She huffed out smoke. “But she couldn’t keep that promise, though there’s no telling if that fool is dead or alive or not.” She shook her head as she rid her pipe of the ashes inside. “Don’t worry about the boys. They’re safe and well cared for. You don’t really have the kind of life that would allow you to have a couple of youngsters around at all times, anyway…”
“I’ll send money… At least you all can live comfortably.” Shin couldn’t give up on the military. He had big plans, and for that reason, he couldn’t quit. “They’re not my sons, but they deserve a good life… and I’ll be sure to give Hohenheim hell if I see him again…”
---
Listen to me I'm not good at most things but I'm pretty proud of this one. I promise that the plot of Goblin is so irrelevant to reading this story. Shin is basically an OC at this point. I SWEAR ON MY LIFE.
If you like or love Fullmetal Alchemist and want to experience the '09 version all over again from the POV of an immortal who doesn't belong there, read this fic XD It's GAY and POLY and SILLY and SERIOUS and so many other wonderful things. My partner, who is not at all obligated to say good things about my work, would agree!
On the flip side, if you like Goblin and wanna see Shin get into shenanigans in another world, you got it! Our immortal boy cannot catch a break! All of those great things from above still apply!
I'll quit rambling, but lemme know if you give it a try! Comment/kudos/like/reply etc! And you can check out the art/concepts I've done here: https://www.tumblr.com/forever-a-genius/745705959834468352/i-took-my-kim-shin-brainrot-and-re-watched-fmab-so
