"yellowjackets has always been a tragedy"

no. the teen story line has always been a tragedy. we walked into this show knowing things were always going to end tragically in the wilderness.

the adult story line was not doomed to be tragic and i'm getting so sick of hearing that it was as a way to dismiss criticism of nat's death. think about the season one finale. the adult story line ended with:

taissa winning an election as a result of spinning her shadow self's actions

misty murdering a woman to protect her friends

shauna truly connecting with her husband and getting away with murder

natalie attempting suicide but being interrupted

not a single one of these things is a tragic outcome. and around them, the adult timeline was still plenty dark: simone finding the shrine, natalie's emotional state, the peripheral characters being murdered, the women discussing how traumatized they are. but dark and tragic are not synonymous. these bullet points are all hopeful places to leave the characters. and the first three are specifically power fantasies of women "winning" when they would normally be punished.

stop conflating the teen and adult timelines. part of what made the season one finale so good was the comparison between the loss in the teen timeline and the successes in the adult one. the change to having nothing but loss in both timelines is new. and i'm tired of seeing people dismiss anyone who had expectations of some form of hope in the adult timeline as blind or incompetent, when the season one finale was giving us exactly that kind of hope.

Lottie pre-crash eating her breakfast alone save for the maid who works for the Matthews, who is both Lottie's subject in a way (serving her) and her superior in a way (acting as an extension of her father's will, serving her medications she's not allowed to decline).

Lottie as an adult crafting herself a home where she can permanently banish the isolation and powerlessness of her childhood without losing its comforts. She's fixing it. She'll be what her father wasn't. Loving, not cruel. Liberating, not tyrannical.

She's a healer. She's a leader! She acts graciously when one of her servants followers serves her maca root instead of ashwaghanda. She makes it a rule that they can leave whenever they want!

Lottie in the wilderness hallucinating all her friends eating together, and look, even though she's died her disciple best friend Laura Lee is there and she already served got her some takeout! And Jackie isn't there there's one free seat just for Lottie!

Lottie's the good queen. Someone has to be! They can't all be unborn queens, she tells herself, or else she everyone would starve!

I think the ship discourse in Yellowjackets fandom would probably go calmer if more ppl realized that "you can ship whatever you want to ship" and "sometimes preferences/headcanons reflect prejudiced stereotypes that exist in real life" are two statements that can coexist.

While it's true that ppl can ship whatever they want and ship wars are pointless, we can't also dismiss all forms of critics about headcanons and preferences as simply "hate" or "envy" or "jealousy" and shut out important conversations bc they're not convenient to us.

Like, the issue w/ Taivan and Jackieshauna: the discussion about racial bias and anti-gender nonconforming bias in progressive spaces like sapphic fandoms is important, and some ppl misusing some concepts or losing their temper doesn't invalidate that.

Same w/ Lottienat: even if arguments like "they have more fics" are shallow, it doesn't erase the fact that some tropes, like "Lottie fixes Nat", reduce Lottie, a rare representation for Indigenous/Maori ppl and ppl w/ schizophrenia, to the role of fixing a white woman, reduce Nat to her addiction and reproduce harmful stereotypes about "bad girls", reinforce misconceptions about addiction (like it's something we can switch off just bc someone loves us), reinforce the same traditional gender roles that the show tries to deconstruct etc.

Fandoms are about fun, but also about community, and only by understanding that both "ship whatever you want" and "sometimes preferences/headcanons carry prejudices", we can make sure that everyone feels included and can be part of the fun.

PS.: I'm gonna tag the 'anti' tags so ppl who don't wanna see it can skip the discourse when they scroll (I actually ship Jackieshauna romantically tbh)

Jacqui is, at the end of the day, a nihilist. They don’t believe anything matters in the world. But rather than being cynical and viewing this as something to be depressed about, she views it as a good thing. The paragraph from the TV Tropes page for anti-nihilism that is the most relevant is  “"Don't cling to pain. Don't expect happiness. Don't fear loss. Accept reality as it is. Enjoy the good. Endure the bad. Don't make a big deal out of anything. Be selfless, and unconditionally kind and just, without ever expecting a reward. We're all going to end up as piles of dust, so why not be nice to each other?"”

That truly is Jacqui’s mindset and way of looking at the world. They do their best to be compassionate, and kind, and caring. They don’t see being soft as a bad thing, and it certainly doesn’t make them naive, or weak, or overly innocent. They see their compassion as a strength, and the fact that they want to help people and care about others as one of their powers, to be honest. Nothing matters - but that’s freeing to Jacqui. 

But because of this being their belief, Jacqui is always just slightly veering towards unhinged. They figure that if nothing really matters, and everything is going to be what it’s going to be....why not go big or go home? They figure things will happen when they’re “meant” to, regardless of their actions, so their actions are going to be whatever they want them to be. They’ll try anything once, they’ll do it for the story, they’re always there to have a good time. Because everyone’s time is short...so you may as well have fun with it.

But it just goes to show how far The Golden Girl’s reach is - you don’t even have to go to Ogden, or grow in up in New York, or have stepped foot in the Hamptons to know who Greer Morrison is.

The summer before their senior year of high school, they got involved, including losing her virginity to Jesse, only to find out he was fucking with them the entire time, and blocked their number when he went back to Ogden.

BIOGRAPHY:

jacqui grew up a relatively under-supervised, overaccomodated only child with happily married parents

up until their high school years, when their mother got sick, and ultimately ended up passing away during their junior year of high school

while jacqui was always free-spirited, the loss of her mother at a young age ultimately sent her into more nihilistic territory, with an overwhelming belief that life is short motivating most of her decisions

but also, she knows what it likes to be in pain and what it's like to have things going on you can't talk about, so she always wants to bring lightness and kindness to other people's lives

even if they seem kinda ditzy and unfocused at times, they're decently smart - not like, got a full ride to ogden smart, but they got accepted on their own merit

they were debating going to somewhere like ucla or nyu, but ultimately wanted to branch out and do something different, see somewhere different - they grew up in la, they'd move back there eventually bc they want to be in music, and ogden is an elite college

and their dad works in music, so yes, they are a lil bit of a nepo baby that way, which definitely helps with the ~ nothing really matters in the long run ~ approach they have to their life/career

since their reintroduction of sorts, they have had a lot of ups and downs, which culminated with jacqui's clip in the time capsule leak revealing jesse only slept with them as a bet, jacqui admitting to jesse after that that they still loved him, and jesse telling jacqui he didn't love them back and beginning to date someone else. safe to say, jacqui and jesse are not speaking at the moment.

✎ BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Keith Matthew Anderson was born on a cold December night to single mother Rebecca Angelique Matthews. Although his biological father was a very wealthy man, he left Rebecca once it was revealed that she was pregnant with his child. Having decided that he’d always intended Rebecca to be more of a fling and realizing he had no interest in becoming a family man, he fled in the middle of the night, never to return or be heard from again. Although he’d been ‘generous’ enough to leave Rebecca $50,000 in hush-money, giving her the opportunity to at least purchase a home for herself and her baby.

With limited funds and a waitress’ salary, Rebecca purchased a small two-bedroom home in Lima Heights, where she raised her son. When Keith was 4, his mother became pregnant with his sister- the result of another fling that once again left the responsibility of a new child to Rebecca. Keith’s sister, Lottie, was born when he was 5, and soon after it became apparent that it would be up to Keith to assist his mother in parenting duties/maintaining the household. His mother worked long, grueling hours and was often too exhausted to do much of anything, leaving Keith with too many responsibilities too soon. This translated into adolescence, teenager-dom, and adulthood for Keith. While he is intelligent, responsible, and caring, he comes off as immature and a bit dumb as he sought fun and freedom outside of his home life.

The absolute best time of Keith’s life was during high school, where he met his best friends and found comfort in his ability to screw around as much as he pleased with little to no consequence. It was for this reason that he purposely failed a grade so that he could be held back- realizing but never speaking that he had a deep-seeded fear of adulthood, and what might happen to him once he left the safety and security of the high school halls. He did graduate at 19, though as he’d suspected the real world did not treat him as well as he might have hoped. Finding himself 29 years of age with only minimum wage work experience and no claim, Keith decided to check out Dalton Sanctuary once he’d made sure Lottie was set and had moved out of his mother’s house. He is considering becoming a resident but is uncertain- things have not worked out well for him in the past so he is cautious. At this point he is aware his father went on to cultivate a family, ones who share his last name. However, he is unaware that Ellis is a staff member as of now.
