THE PERIOD OF ACTIVISM
The Period of Activism
Historical Background
The Seeds of Activism
THE LITERARY REVOLUTION
WRITINGS DURING THE PERIOD OF ACTIVISM
The Period of the Bloody Placards
According to Pociano Pineda, youth activism in 1970 – 1972
was due to domestic and worldwide causes.
Activism is connected with
the history of our Filipino youth.
Because of the ills of society, the youth moved to seek reforms. Some continued to believe that the democratic government is stable and that it is only the people running the government who is fault. Some believed that socialism or communism should replace democracy. Some armed groups were formed to bring down the democratic form of government.
Pociano Pineda
The seeds of activism resulted in the declaration of Martial Law in 1972. We can, however, say that he seeds were earlier sown from the times of
Lapu-lapu, Lakandula, and Rizal.
The revolution against the powerful forces in the Philippines can be said to be the monopoly of the youth in whose veins flow the fire in their blood. What Rizal said of the youth being the hope of the Fatherland is still valid even today.
Pineda also said that this was the time when the youth once more proved that it is not the constant evasion that shapes our race and nationalism. There is a limit to one’s patience. It may explode like a volcano if overstrained.
The youth became completely rebellious during this period. This was proven not only in the bloody demonstrations and in the sidewalk expressions but also in literature. Campus newspapers showed rebellious emotions. The once aristocratic writers developed an awareness for society. They held pens and wrote on placards in red paint the equivalent of the word MAKIBAKA.
They attacked the ills of society and politics. Any establishment became the symbol of the ills that had to be changed.
Rolando Tinio

“Marahil dahop and dila ko upang isaulo’t ipaliwanag
“Maybe my mind is impoverished to explain, to put to memoryl
The dreams and deaths of the poor
I’m witness to the cries of young girls butchered like pigs
While being raped by greedy politicians and businessmen.
In the mudslinging of congressmen, who at once join their followers and alien advisers who compete to sell their country
What price heroism? Of laurel and golden alms?
They’ll name you after a crooked street or a mossy monument which drunkards use for throwing.
The irreverence for the poor reached its peak during this period of the mass revolution.
“Hands that broadcast sweat
Brandish placards of protest
In the haciendas of Negros
Sugar cane turns bitter
In the rice granaries of Luzon
Hatred, hammers, sickles,
On old newspapers
Students write the rubrica of dissent
This was also during this period that bomba films that discredit our ways as Filipinos started to come out.
Why should they who roast
The suckling grown loan on verbiage?
Why should they who plant and grind
The corn grow thin on grit and homing?
Strike! Strike! Strike!
A dormant hate errupts
Bundok Buntis, Arayat! Kanlaon!

Character Lineup
Tumblr media
A full-body lineup of all twelve Guardians! Worked really hard on this, so I’m proud of how it turned out!
Some thoughts on their character designs under the cut:
In Tagalog mythology, Tala is the goddess of the stars and the daughter of the supreme god Bathala. In my reimagining of her, she's also the deity of feasts, holidays and family. I gave her the traits of a cooked crab to tie her to feasts, as well as her relationship to Mayari.
+
In Tagalog myth, Mayari is the one-eyed goddess of the moon. In my design for her, she's a coconut crab as a reference to the Bagobo belief that a giant crab causes earthquakes by pinching a giant eel wrapped around the world. Fitting, since here she fights the serpent Bakunawa.
+
In the Ibalong epic of Bicol, Oryol is a half-serpent demigoddess with a hypnotic voice. For her reimagining, I gave her bright colors (like a sea snake) and a flower in her hair to give her a tropical look.
+
In one of the Visayan creation myths, Lidagat is the goddess of the sea. I tied a lot of my OCs to the sea, so I specifically made her deity of the deep sea and made her look like an angler fish to reflect this.
+
In one of the Visayan creation myths, Lihangin is the god of the wind. I designed him to have the traits of various types of angels, such as the six wings of a seraph, as well as a sash and halo.
+
In Tagalog belief, Mariang Makiling is the kindhearted goddess of Mt. Makiling. I wanted to reimagine her a deity of time, earth, and stability, hence the rotting flowers on her shoulder. She also has a hornbill beak since hornbill cries are used to tell time.
+
In Tagalog mythology, Anitan Tabu is the goddess of wind and rain. She's described as being fickle-minded, and I wanted to play this up by making her the deity of rivers, mystery, lies, and ambiguity. Crocodiles are sacred in some Philippine belief systems, hence her crocodile traits. It’s also a reference to the expression “crocodile tears”, meaning fake expressions of sadness.
+
In Tagalog mythology, Mapulon is the god of seasons. In my OCverse, I also made him the deity of relaxation and the protector of provincial towns, hence his rooster tail and comb-like hair.
+
Again drawing from Tagalog myth, Ikapati is the goddess of agriculture. I gave her the traits of a horse, a farm animal, as well as the attire of a farmer. I also wanted to reference the myth of the tikbalang, a creature with the head of a horse.
+
In Kapampangan myth, Mariang Sinukuan is the goddess of Mt. Arayat. She settles disputes among mortals, so I made her a deity of justice with a light motif. She has the wings of a moth and glowing eyes because of this.
+
In Cebuano legend, Mariang Kakaw is the goddess of Mt. Lantoy, named after its numerous cacao plants. I gave her a warm brown color palette to reference dried cacao beans' brown color. I also modeled her after the provincial girls often featured in Amorsolo's paintings.
+
In Visayan myths, Magwayen is the goddess of the sea who ferries the souls of the dead. I gave her the motif of estuaries (where the river transitions into the sea; death is believed to be a transition). She has the lower half of an anaconda, a sacred river-dwelling animal.

SHORT ANALYSIS
the poem talks about the characteristics of the filipinos during the martial law of President Ferdinand Marcos. There was bloodshed on every streets, filipinos don't have freedom to express their feelings and thousands of innocent lives were spent. We are thankful that the years of suffering is now over, and hoping it will continue to be so.

Behind the Ruins
Tumblr media
She conquered her demons and wore her scars like wings. She was flawed but a dreamer, a muse that chaos once produced. Her name is Precious Abigail A. Marcelino, a young girl who always found herself calming in the beauty of nature.
To have some break for a tiring week, Filipino families usually gather every Sunday to have some fun and relaxation. It was 7th of July when Marcelino- Castillo family agreed to another family outing. Within the short time of travel, different stories were revealed and old stories began to rise again. In the middle of the way, travelers can see a statement “Difficult roads leads to beautiful places” that was placed in the middle of a narrow road. And after two hours ride, there lies the paradise of the old Roman culture inspired architectural facilities present in the vicinity of a Hotel and Resort whereas upon arrival of guests, everyone become busy having their own pictorial with their loved ones around the place.
There are many activities that can be done within the four hectares of secluded premises of the Resort. Swimming and ATV riding are some examples of this. The pool area consists of three pools and it varies from the depths of the pool. One is for kids with 3-4ft and the other one is 5ft, and for the adult is the 6ft pool. The pools opens at 9 (nine) am. And for the assurance of parents worrying about the security of their children during this kind of bonding, this resort ensures safety of everyone especially in the pool area as it offers life guards equipped with enough knowledge, ready to help everyone who is in need.
Tumblr media
And of course to attain this, the Resort had rules and regulation that visitors need to follow to ensure the safety and for the maintenance of the area, such as the proper attires for swimming (wearing cotton garments and maong jeans are strictly prohibited), hard liquors inside the resort is also strictly prohibited (3-5% of alcohol content is allowed with corkage fee of 50php), but the resort have its own bar section. There is café inside the Hotel and Resort. If visitors wish to stay a little bit longer, there is a hotel ready to accompany their stay. On some rooms, guests can take the full advantage to view the Mount Arayat from their verandahs; a true symphony in nature.
Tumblr media
The place can take its tourist into another side of adventure, its setting feels like siiting in ancient works and the views that are surely aesthetic. This includes attractions like the Ruins of Rome  The Colosseum, Ancient of Days, Luxurious Chalets and villas and many more.
Tumblr media
The Ancient of Days also known as AOD is one on Goshen’s intricately designed structure inspired by the Lord of the Ring’s ASMR-Rivendell. With its conceptual location, overlookng mountains where the golden sun sets, and it is certainly a good view to take photographs. This scenic sanctuary is designed as venue exclusively for engagement proposals, wedding ceremonies, renewal of vows, life long frienship appreciation, and other love celebrations.
Tumblr media
The resorts offers visitors a place to properly cater everyone in their visit. In the pool area, there are cottages that differs in sizes to accommodate large to small scale number of visitors.
When its time to go home, bid temporary good byes to each other bagging not just pictures but also this golden memory made. After the long day activities, all are tired so majority are fast asleep. And those few who are still awake are surely contemplating well on what  life had thought  today. That simple things like this: getting out with the whole family, eating together, just having a good time with all the old stories told are not just ordinary things now a days. This is a way of reconnecting to one another after the whole tiring week or month.
This kind of setting is really not just to escape reality but also to find a will to fight another storm waiting after the rainbow. Because those smiles, laughter coming from the people arround is not just an ordinary expression of feelings, but they are also the ones that will give another reason to continue survive a battle and will give enough strength for the coming days.
To wrap this all up, this day was not just like all the other days. This is a day spent with the minds calm, with the hearts pounding with joy and soul enriching with tons of memories, a day spent with family and relatives that are also giving will to fight reality, a day that did not just full up space of all of the memory cards but a day that cannot happen twice and cannot be replaced by any other days of the year.
A true calm in chaos; behind the ruins comes serenity.

Progress For a Mute Writer
Poetry is much more calming to me. My stories are chaos. My poems are peace.
But still, even this has changed today. (Actually, this is since yesterday.)
I wrote my poems (and a lot) with so much ease and emotion.
I wasn't scared to write and I didn't force any motion. It was all called.
Having new perspectives and learning new things gave me more room to set myself free, I suppose?
I like these better, too. More melodic, more rhythmic, and more visually vivid.
It seems my new (and continually evolving) routine pays off.
I've been concerned for a while about how words are primarily just pictures to me, which makes my poems kind of mechanical. I had a hard time converging music and words.
I think I understand it better now.
To add new perspectives, dive into the new perspectives.
Most of the time, they cannot be taught to heart by scientific methods. It's like life; it can only be experienced by yourself.
2019-02-13 18:01 Philippines Wednesday
And then I have some sulking again.
Because Karu's not sleeping here tonight, and I was ordered to get food downstairs alone, and the dishes are not washed.
All of them are more likely excuses, and the trigger is anticipation of surprise alone-ness and then a feeling of being used, which both causes and effects the feeling of alone-ness.
They're all illogical and that's easy to see right now after writing them.
I am more or less calm again!
2019-02-13 19:27 Philippines Wednesday
I'm watching Ballroom e Youkoso (Welcome to the Ballroom) again, and there's this drive scene where I feel like they made it visually go too fast and my heart got nervous more than I thought. It reminded of times when Pa drove us to places, with his time-consciousness and me-first attitude overtaking other cars (with good timing though. He takes care not to cut in between cars) and then everyone in our family would be asleep.
I wasn't so sure God existed, but I prayed. And made sure I didn't fall asleep. I wanted to keep awake with whoever drove.
I remember there were times when my drowsiness was unbearable... I would jolt awake in few minutes, but sometimes I'd fall into deep sleep from being tired.
I wouldn't forget to pray hard though hahaha
2019-02-13 19:53 Philippines Wednesday
To Karu:
You really shouldn't trust the spoken words of a mute writer.
I don't have enough skill points to be able to express my feelings properly through my voice. It still has an inadequate form, and so it tends to make more chaos than order. Hurting others in the process.
I am sorry if you feel hurt sometimes or if you feel conflicted about what to do in your turns.
Know that I'm proud of you for sticking to our rule faithfully: to do what you think you must, regardless of what I might feel.
You are doing what is right. So stay calm and focus.
Your dreams live in your mind, so take care of it.
Stay Alive, and tell me if you need anything. As always, I'm just here.
. . It was maybe around 22:30 when I sent that, I think?
It's now morning. Karu and Job passed by our home to pick up extra instruments. They're on their way to Mt. Arayat. So envyyyyyiiiuuusss hahaha
Anyway, I still have a sharp tongue so I held it back. Karu and I hugged more than was planned, and it was good.
He said to please not hate him. I said I could never. He said I can. I shook my head.
I told him to bring home food. And then we're even. Haha
My right eyeball has been stinging at random since yesterday. A night not far from today, Karu accidentally stabbed it with a finger when he was trying to scratch his face (I love snuggling to him in our sleep too close).
It's the only possibility I can think of as of now.

DTI opens Negosyo Center in Arayat town
#PHinfo: DTI opens Negosyo Center in Arayat town
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Dec. 22 (PIA) -- Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) opened its 20th Negosyo Center in the province located in Arayat town.    DTI Pampanga OIC-Provincial Director Elenita Ordonio said the facility would provide business advisory services, training, business name registration assistance, registration for Barangay Micro Business Enterprises, and will also serve as an OFW Assistance Desk, display center, database center and venue for market matching activity.    For her part, DTI Regional Director Judith Angeles stressed the importance of putting up a Negosyo Center, especially during this time of health crisis.    “I thank the local government of Arayat for their support in establishing a Negosyo Center. The establishment of this facility is very timely to aid in the recovery of our micro, small, and medium entrepreneurs (MSMEs),” Angeles said.
Department of Trade and Industry Regional Director Judith Angeles (left) and Arayat Mayor Emmanuel Alejandrino (right) lead the ribbon cutting during the opening of the Negosyo Center in the town. (DTI Pampanga)
Meanwhile, in behalf of the municipality, Mayor Emmanuel Bon Alejandrino expressed support to the operation of the said facility in the town.    “We are indeed thankful to DTI Pampanga for putting up this facility in our town. This is a great help for our constituents who are doing business in Arayat and are affected by the pandemic. For our part, we will make sure that the local government will reach out to our MSMEs so that they will feel the support of the government in growing their businesses,” Alejandrino said.    In Pampanga, only four municipalities are yet to establish their own Negosyo Centers.    The creation of Negosyo Centers in each local government unit is mandated under Republic Act 10644 otherwise known as the Go Negosyo Act, to support inclusive growth and economic development. Mt. Arayat with Love
This early morning, I just arrived from Pampanga. It’s home of Mt. Arayat, a popular old mountain filled with folklore since the 1600s, located in central Luzon, Philippines. I joined my wife Nhorie on her family’s reunion at the home of her younger brother Aki (and wife Weng) for her older sister (Lolet with husband Gerry and kids) vacationing from Florida, USA.
For me, Mt. Arayat kindles a feeling of “longing.” It’s a feeling akin to the “longing” that Moses must had felt when he was in Mt. Nebo speaking to God. In Mt. Nebo, God spoke to Moses about His people’s entering the promised land (Canaan). I can imagine the “longing” Moses and God’s people may had felt for the fulfillment of the promise. Life often finds us experiencing “longings.” Like in my past travels when I departed from places I loved, my wife’s sister Lolet and husband Gerry have always expressed “longings” to return. When they come on board the plane this week to bring them back to the US, Lolet and Gerry will depart but their original home is left behind. The home represents emotions we feel as an airplane, ship, or vessel slowly moves us away from it. The home is a place of “longings” - with nostalgic partings, yearnings, and hopes that defy definition. We simply ache for what’s left, and long for what we can’t quite reach in reality.
Noted psychologist, Dr. Carl Jung, once wrote: “Everything that happens to us, properly understood, leads us back to our selves; it is as though there were some unconscious guidance whose aim is to deliver us ...” Amid the “longings” that are natural to our human state, I sense echoes and hints of heaven. Our “longings” all point us to God. He is the only complete fulfillment of all the “longings” we yearn. As writer C.S. Lewis shares, “The sweetest thing in all my life has been the longing - to reach the Mountain, to find the place where all beauty came from.”

10 Thoughts on 100 Tula Para kay Stella: 1. May mga damdaming hindi talaga kayang ipahayag gamit ang mga simpleng salita. 2. May mga salita ring mas mainam ikubli gamit ang tula at talinghaga. 3. The best yung 3-word rule. Mas maiksi, mas mainam. Less talk, less mistake. 4. Perfect din yung Mt. Arayat scene. Stella to Fidel: "Three-word rule?! I like you. Gusto kita. I love you. Mahal kita. Ilang salita pa ba ang kailangan mo para masabi mo yan?!" Ramdam kita Stella. Haha 😅 5. Relate much sa 90's cultural reference. Ngayon na lang ulit narinig ang Friendster at nakita ang diskette. #batang90's ❤ 6. Nice one sa dorm scenes na nagseserenade ang mga organizations ng mga boarders. Very State U ang dating. Haha 😂 namiss ko ang Kamia Dorm ng UP. 7. Perfect movie for introverts. The movie was able to show the contrast between written and spoken words. There are those who are much comfortable with the written langauage as a tool for self-expression. 8. Poem as an art is also a tool to express your self in a much better way. It also captures feelings and values entrenched within the very heart of the writer. 9. That art called catharsis. 10. ☆☆☆☆/5 perfect na sana kung di lang dahil sa audition scene na wala nmn talagang relevance s movie. Hehe 😆 A must-watch. Galing. 👏👏👏 #PistaNgPelikulangPilipino

Nograles assures Duterte’s support to electric coops vs privatization
#PHinfo: Nograles assures Duterte’s support to electric coops vs privatization
MEXICO, Pampanga, Feb.17 (PIA) -- Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles assured that President Rodrigo Duterte supports electric cooperatives in serving the community with a lower price of electricity compared to private companies.   In his message Sunday during the 38th Annual General Membership Assembly of Pampanga I Electric Cooperative (PELCO I) in Mexico town, Nograles said the Duterte administration is keen on opposing oligarchs to privatize electric cooperatives in the country.   He revealed that about seven out of a total 120 electric cooperatives in the country are currently suffering financial loss from the past years.    “What we want is by the end of President Duterte’s term, all electric cooperatives are progressive and not a single one would be facing bankruptcy,” he stressed.

Nograles expressed gratitude to electric cooperatives for valuing their member-consumer-owners (MCOs) by providing lower costs of energy unlike private companies.   “What I really admire here in PELCO I is that electricity costs PhP8.72 compared to about PhP10 per kilowatt hour in Metro Manila,” the official added.   He vowed that with National Electrification Administration and Philippine Rural Electric Cooperatives Association Inc., electric cooperatives should not be threatened by the possibility of privatization.   Thousands of MCOs of PELCO I attended the general assembly which was simultaneously held in five locations: in its main office in Mexico, Candaba, Magalang, San Luis and Arayat. Arayat slay suspects charged; PTFoMS shrugs off PH’s 5th rank
#PHnews: Arayat slay suspects charged; PTFoMS shrugs off PH’s 5th rank
MANILA – Murder charges have been filed against three suspects in connection with the killing of journalist Jupiter Gonzales and his friend, Christopher Tiongson, the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) reported on Tuesday.
PTFoMS Executive Director, Undersecretary Joel Sy Egco announced this latest development during the 67th anniversary of the National Press Club (NPC). Gonzales was a longtime member of the club, the largest group of working journalists in the country.
Citing a report from Police Lt. Col Dale Soliba, Chief of Police of Arayat, Pampanga, Egco said double murder charges have been filed before the Pampanga Prosecutors Office in San Fernando City on Oct. 28, docketed as Case No.  III-12-INV-19J 01409, against primary suspect Armando Velasco, and his two accomplices -- Edgardo Cabrera and a ‘John Doe’.
Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar, who is also PTFoMS co-chair, once again lauded the PTFoMS staff, its agents and the local Philippine National Police for the quick resolution of the twin slays.
"I congratulate the PTFoMS, the PNP, and everyone who worked hard in accomplishing the mission this early. We are indeed very grateful for your work," said Andanar, who was NPC anniversary guest of honor and main speaker.
The announcement coincided with the release of the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) Global Impunity Index (GII) for 2019 report, which ranked the Philippines, again, as the 5th most dangerous for journalists, owing largely to the still unresolved Ampatuan Massacre case where 58 civilians, including 32 journalists, were killed in what would be known as the single deadliest attack on members of the media.
Expected CPJ report
Egco said the latest CPJ report was “expected”, stressing that the massacre case, which is now nearing promulgation, has been keeping the country on the list since 2009.
He, however, expressed strong confidence that by 2020, the country would be given a much-improved ranking.
“The CPJ report is not surprising and was actually expected. In fact, we have been anticipating that because for as long as the massacre case remains in the equation, following the methodology used by CPJ, we shall remain on that list,” he said.
He added that the report covered a 10-year period from August 2009 to August this year.
“The massacre happened in November 2009. With great confidence, I could say that either way, once promulgated and the suspects convicted, come the next report period covering August 2010 up to August 2020, the massacre case will be out of the equation,” Egco said. “Thus, we are looking at a much better and improved ranking for the Philippines.’
At this time, he said, they are clarifying with CPJ some gray areas in their methodology, such as the inclusion on their list of cases that were deemed not related to media work.
The recent CPJ report said: “The Philippines has been among the worst five countries nearly every year since the index was first published in 2008. The country’s fifth-worst ranking is due in part to the deadly ambush of 58 individuals, including 32 journalists and media workers, in Ampatuan, Maguindanao, on November 23, 2009.”
It added that while “the trial of over 100 suspects behind the massacre is due to conclude this year, as of August 31, 2019 — the final date CPJ counted convictions for this year’s index — no verdict had been announced.”
Egco said while it was unfortunate that one case, probably that of Kidapawan broadcaster Eduardo Dizon, was added to the 2018 list of unresolved cases in the country, the PTFoMS finds it “appalling” that the CPJ formula does not factor on sincere government efforts in holding perpetrators to account by running after and eventually filing charges against them.
“I have already established contact with CPJ Southeast Asia representative, Shawn Crispin, and raised our concern. There is something amiss in their methodology such as that if state action would not be considered, and that’s for all countries they cover, then they are not helping at all. Impunity, or even complete impunity, means there was no action taken at all in any particular state. And that is definitely not the case in the Philippines,” he added.
As expected, the CPJ list remained on its 2018 level with Somalia, Syria, Iraq, South Sudan, and the Philippines still comprising the top five positions.
Meanwhile, Egco said the PTFoMS shall relentlessly act on all cases of violence, threats or murders of media workers.
The agency, he said, has effectively investigated, monitored and acted on every incident brought to it, including the filing of charges against suspects in both work-related and non-work-related deaths of journalists.
Come January 2020, the Task Force will embark on yearlong, countrywide safety seminars for media workers by competent security experts and professionals.
PTFoMS has also strengthened its engagements with both local and international stakeholders to include projects with UNESCO and the International Media Support (IMS), among others. (PNA)
