that interview is driving me insane i've been thinking about it for the past hour and i still can't wrap my head around it. i think what really gets under my skin is it just... contradicts with the text of the game. the most positive possible reading of the ending where gale blows himself up is that it was an unavoidable tragedy dictated by fate but even that's a stretch. to say it's a good ending?? or a satisfying conclusion to his arc?? i call bull. it's more infuriating because there is such a clear good ending for gale's character arc and it's the professor ending! his arc was about learning to accept himself as he was, to value who he is as he is flaws and all, and he's done that in the professor ending! and the god of ambition ending is a bad end for him but still ties into his overall arc in a satisfying if sad way (imo). the ending where he dies just... doesn't. which is fine as a tragedy but to imply it isn't exactly that, a tragedy, is wild to me. and it being so blatantly contradictory to the actual events of the game makes me think that whole thing was just catering to people who hate gale which like... why? people who don't like him don't care about his story so why pander to them like this?

uhg. i am sorry for blowing up your inbox like this i just feel like i'm gonna rip my hair out and need to express that to a fellow gale appreciator. i love gale's epilogue SO MUCH it made me feel for a bit like maybe the writers had actually changed how they felt about him but. nope! silly of me to hope for that. wish i could memory wipe that whole interview from my brain dark urge style.

i started to make a meta post about this yesterday, but reading things like this from gale:

when you have this:

it's absolutely beyond comprehension for me how anyone could try to frame this as an ending that is the right one in "many ways", as the "guy who starts off annoying everyone", eating your "most priced possessions", having to "give back to the world".

for the founder of the company to say he wasn't "ready" the "first time", but he's finally "ready" now.

gale's death isn't only unnecessary, an instruction given to him by his former mentor on the behalf of a goddess, who would've sacrificed not only him but thousands of others to achieve her own goals, he doesn't want to die. he's terrified. he wants to live. he is offering this because he believes that his time has run out. because he wants his death to have purpose if it must happen. because he feels he made a mistake far bigger than he can ever make up for. because he doesn't want others to waste their chance at life like he feels he has. the will he leaves behind in the epilogue if he sacrifices himself isn't finished because he thought there would be more time. i could go on and on.

and again, the question is too... for what exactly does he need to "give back to the world"?

being perceived as annoying after coming out of what is presented as isolation and depression? asking for help with a now chronic impairment that feeds on his very soul and wreaks havoc on his body? for making a mistake? by that logic every companion deserves the same fate.

which brings me to the contrast to how most of the other companions are framed in this interview: k*rlach, "the labrador of the party". l*e'zel, "she's so young". ast*rion, "much of what he does it out of fear". sh*dowheart, "the jason bourne" and "victim of religous trauma". w*ll, "the true baldur's gate hero".

the difference is staggering. there's empathy here. there's at least a surface level understanding and/or appreciation of the characters there.

...and then you have gale.

it's alienating and disappointing to see devs have so little respect and care for their own character, as well as for the parts of their fandom who have grown attached to the character exactly for the strengths and flaws he has, for the struggles he faces and for the healing journey he can have if he is helped and lives.

just wanted to put this out there. it’s been a while since i’ve posted, and this is something. 

you’re worn out, unsure whether the bau is your home after all. but the resident genuis won’t stand for that, especially when there’s things still unsaid between you both (2.5K)

It wasn’t as subtle as you hoped it to be. Then again, you should have known better working with a team of profilers who you consider family. Meaning in some sense, this wasn’t something that would’ve stayed hidden for long.

Initially, you just felt your eyes losing focus on case files. You’d been in California for two weeks on a case, resulting in a hefty amount of paperwork and the time difference combined threw you off, but it was meant to pass.

Except it didn’t.

You were beginning to get restless, waves of tiredness hitting you like a brick wall during office hours and Spencer was the first to catch on. Whenever you would leave your desk and later return you’d find a new mug of coffee, freshly brewed for you along with a small smile from across the room as you looked over in appreciation.

Convinced you had simply caught some kind of bug, you took a day off to rest. Yet, one day turned into three and once you returned, Spencer’s eyes widened at the sight that greeted him.

“Is that any way to greet your best friend, huh, Spence?” JJ chuckles, walking in behind you as she rests her hand on your shoulder, catching your gaze. You could tell JJ was profiling you with her soft Mom smile. “How’re you feeling, Y/n?”

Avoiding various glances from the rest of the team, you quickly nod. “Better.” You respond, wanting to carry on as if nothing were wrong as your glow began to flicker and fade.

“If it isn’t my angel, having returned from her duties in heaven.” Derek speaks up, happily walking towards you as Penelope remains in tow.

“Oh, I’m so glad you’re back. I don’t know if you got the-”

“The animal videos and relaxing music tracks,” You smile as Penelope nods, Derek rolling his eyes. “I did, thanks, Pen.” You rise to your feet, blocking out the blurred vision as you lean into a tight hug.

Whilst in Penelope’s embrace, Derek shoots Spencer a look, motioning him to follow.

“Just take it easy, we can’t have half of our favourite duo going on us.” Penelope jokes with you as you watch Spencer walk sheepishly behind Derek into the conference room, the door closing behind them. “Well, if you need me, I’ll be in the Batcave.”

The Batcave had never appealed to you more than now. The dark walls, few visitors and all of Penelope’s fluffy things to play with. Maybe you’ll find a reason to stop by later if the headache that looms over your thoughts returns.

Over in the conference room, Derek leans against the table whilst Spencer tries to stand tall, his hands resting in his pockets. “Kid, what’s going on with Y/n?”

A heavy sigh escapes Spencer’s lips as his eyes fall to the ground. “What’d you mean?”

Derek shifts, his eyes hardening as Spencer lifts his head back up. “Reid,” Derek starts.

“She, she won’t tell me,” Spencer states, taking Derek by surprise. “I, I want to ask her, but I’m worried she won’t take it well.” Spencer sighs as he turns his head, looking out from the blinds to see you talking with JJ, a tired smile wearing heavy on your face. “We made an agreement a while ago to always be honest with one another, but I don’t know if that still stands.”

“Is she struggling with things?” Derek questions, resting his arms against the table as Spencer opens his mouth, but words struggle to follow.

“I, I know I’m a profiler, that’s my job but with Y/n, I, I hate doing it. She’s supposed to tell me these things, I don’t want to figure it out.” Spencer stumbles, but he knows exactly what is wrong with you, and that’s the issue.

“Judging by the guilt in your voice, you’ve already figured it out, huh?” Derek comments as Spencer nods in response. “You gotta talk to her, Reid before it gets worse.”

Another nod follows as Spencer remains lost in thought, barely registering the quick pat on the shoulder from Derek before he exits the conference room, leaving him alone until Penelope enters, announcing there’s a new case.

It was a long case, one that dragged out with several victims and a blur of family members cross your mind as you curl up in your seat on the jet.

Closing your eyes, all you can picture are those screams and violent sobs from the victim's families. You promised them you’d bring their child/sibling/friend/niece/nephew/grandchild home, but you couldn’t, you didn’t.

“Hey,” Lifting your head up, you’re greeted by Spencer holding a mug of green tea. “Did you know that Green Tea contains epigallocatechin-3-gallate, or more commonly known as EGCG. It’s a natural antioxidant, and that’s only one of the benefits from drinking green tea, did you know,”

Holding your hand up, Spencer pauses before sitting down beside you.

“I’m glad you stopped him before I did.” Rossi comments from across the jet, nursing a glass of scotch along with Hotch.

“Thanks, Spence.” You mutter, grasping the mug closely as the burning sensation trickles through your skin, but you refuse to let go. “Sorry, my heads just thumping.” You smile weakly to your best friend who wears that uncomfortable tight-lipped grin. “Don’t do that,”

Spencer pauses, his lips parting. “Do what?” He asks, shuffling in his seat so his body is facing you, closing off everyone else who is asleep or drifting on the jet.

“Treat me like I’m ill or tiptoe around things.” You sigh, releasing your hands from the mug as you rub your temples, the warmth from your fingertips soothing you momentarily.

“Then tell me what’s going on, Y/n.” Spencer states quietly, trying not to raise his voice as JJ stirs in her sleep across from you both. “Please,” He whispers, and the mere plead breaks your heart.

Closing your eyes, you shake your head. “I don’t know if I can Spencer,” You tell him, opening your eyes and focusing on his, how big the universe looks through his hazel gaze. “and it hurts to admit that because I care about you and, and everyone so much.” You never get overly emotional after cases, but with everything else, it’s just hit you.

Reaching out, Spencer rests his hand on yours, his thumb gliding over the back of your hand. “I just, I don’t like seeing my friends in pain and I just want to stop it happening.” He admits, his eyes fixated on yours as a tear falls down your cheek.

“Well,” A scoff leaves your lips as you take your hand from Spencer’s as you forcefully wipe your eyes. “not everything can be fixed that easily, Reid.” You remark before rising to your feet, shuffling past Spencer and over to the bathroom.

In a state of shock, Spencer registers JJ opening her eyes opposite him. “If that was your best attempt at comfort, I’ve seen better effort from serial killers.” JJ jokes as she sits upright whilst Spencer’s brows remain deeply furrowed.

“Y/n never closes herself off like this, JJ.” Spencer sighs. “We’ve been friends for nine hundred and twelve point five days. And during all this time she’s been honest with me, never once has she hidden something.”

Memories from late nights watching Doctor Who reruns, attending book signings or being Spencer’s plus one to obscure foreign films when no one else would go, you both were happy just to be in one another's company. Even if you had no idea what was happening during a film in Russian, Spencer aided as a translator, much to the others attending annoyance. All Spencer wanted was for you to be happy.

“There are some things you can’t share with your friends, Spence.” JJ reminds him. “Y/n might not have figured it all out yet, just give her some time.”

Spencer nods and his ears perk up to the sound of your footsteps approaching.

“Thanks,” You mumble as Spencer rises to his feet, allowing you to slide back against the window as you close your eyes in an attempt to sleep or avoid the inevitable conversation with Spencer. For now, it remains to be the latter.

Since you returned from the case, you only felt worse in every sense.

You wanted to carry on, you wanted to make this work because you loved this. No, you love this.

“Y/L/N?” Hotch calls out, catching you by surprise as you turn around. “Do you have a moment?”

Nodding in response, Spencer’s eyes follow you as you walk up to Hotch’s office, the door closing behind you and the blinds being drawn.

“Someones in trouble.” Derek sings, causing JJ and Penelope to laugh. But Spencer only tenses, wishing he could be in there with you, hoping you’re alright.

When you walk out, it’s been thirty-two minutes and twelve seconds, and during that time all Spencer has been able to focus on is the door of Hotch’s office.

Hotch gives you a curt nod before he shuts the door to his office, retreating back to his desk whilst you walk toward yours. “Everything okay sugar plum?” Penelope asks, wrapping her arms around you as you weakly hug her back.

“Yeah, I’m just going to take some time off. I’ve got a few things to sort out.” You explain, trying to avoid the concerned glances of your friends at the anonymity of your statement. “I’ll be back before you know it, guys.” You force a small laugh. “And I’ll only be a phone call away. I don’t wanna miss out on the action.”

“Like we’d let you.” Derek remarks.

“Rest up, okay?” JJ comments with a small smile as you grab your bag and coat.

As you lift your head up to wave, you focus on Spencer. You know you’ll always focus on Spencer in a room, no matter how many or few people there may be; Spencer is the first person you’ll notice.

More specifically, your focus lands on the solemn expression he is wearing. One you’re aware of but not well accompanied with.

“Take it easy, okay?” Penelope calls out to you as you walk through the glass doors.

Once out of sight, everyone turns to face Spencer who lifts his head up, forcing that tight-lipped smile. “What?”

JJ crosses her arms whilst Penelope steps closer. “Why are you just standing here? You’re our resident genius and you’re clueless!” Penelope groans, gripping onto Derek’s arm. “How can he be so naive?”

“I’m right here, Penelope.” Spencer speaks up. “But I don’t follow, for once.” He remarks, and JJ laughs quietly at Spencer’s attempt at humour.

Rolling her eyes, Penelope lets go of her favourite man and reaches over to Spencer. “Y/n, our sweet, loving agent with the heart of gold and the mind of a thunderstorm.” Penelope begins, and Spencer nods along, not wanting to interrupt about how a thunderstorm isn’t the best use of a metaphor to describe your mind when in reality it’s more like a-

“Spencer?” Derek waves his hand in front of Spencer’s face, bringing him back to reality.

“What about Y/n?” Spencer clears his throat, but the change in his pitch doesn’t favour him as Rossi raises an eyebrow as he approaches the rest of the team.

“He’s figuring it out, isn’t he?” Rossi comments as a series of nods follow. “About time, kid.” Rossi raises his mug to Spencer who leans against the edge of his desk.

“Just give him a moment,” JJ speaks up as Spencer fixates on your desk, your absent desk.

How every morning you’re the first person who makes him laugh from across the room. You bring him coffee or he’ll bring you one. You always try to persuade him to eat out, or go on a walk or try riding a bike after work instead of the subway. Spencer will sing along to cheesy songs with you just to hear you yell at the top of your lungs and dance in your apartment. Spencer gave up a chess tournament to go on a bike ride with you at sunset, just to see the warm glow against your face, knowing how soft your skin would feel against his.

And that’s when it hits him. Every single moment over the past two and a half years.

“I, I have to go,” Spencer mumbles, pushing himself from his desk and quickly walks out from the BAU, rushing to the elevator as the team quietly celebrate.

Spencer is running, and it isn’t a flattering sight to witness as he breathes heavily, bursting through the doors of the parking lot.

“Y/n?” Spencer calls out, running toward the far block F where you always park your car, hoping he isn’t too late.

“Spencer?” Your voice falters as you exit your car, wiping your eyes as Spencer pants, but still walks closer toward you. “What’re you doing here? Why aren’t you working?” You want to laugh as an attempted smile crosses your lips as Spencer’s hair clings to his forehead, his lips remaining parted as he breathes shallowly. “Okay firstly take a breath, you need it.”

Nodding in response, Spencer takes a deep breath before composing himself. “I had to talk to you before you go.” Spencer speaks smoothly as you step away from your car, standing in front of him as tears line your cheeks.

“Is something wrong, Spence?” You ask sweetly, despite your current state, your attention remains fixated on Spencer as he shakes his head.

“Y/n, I,” Stuttering over his words, Spencer exhales deeply. “I know I can’t make you better overnight, but I also don’t want to lose you- none of us do, but I guess I especially don’t.” Spencer begins to explain. “All I ask is that you let me in, let me help in some way, even if it’s just opening your car door or sending you those memes Garcia finds, I’ll do it.” A smile graces Spencer’s lips as you chuckle softly.

“I feel so lost, Spencer.” You admit, your eyes glazing over. “Of late it’s just all too much, I can’t, I can’t take the pain and sorrow of those who’ve lost loved ones.” You wipe your face, taking a shaky breath as Spencer steps closer.

“But think of how many lives you save, Y/n.” Spencer interrupts. “Statistically, those outweigh the lives lost.”

“I was expecting a statistic I’ll admit.” You joke, and Spencer shrugs his shoulder. “I know it’ll pass, but it just hurts.”

Spencer places his hand on your shoulder, his eyes scanning yours for any uncertainty before he wraps his arms around you, holding you close against his chest as silent sobs leave your lips.

“I’m always here, Y/n. We all are.” Spencer mutters as his lips press against the top of your head, lingering as he closes his eyes, not wanting to let you go.

Pulling away from his embrace, you cross your arms over your chest. “Thank you, Spence.” You smile sweetly. “I’ll be back soon, I promise.”

“I’ll keep you to that, Y/n.” Spencer chuckles before you lean forward, kissing his cheek softly before retreating to your car. “Don’t be a stranger, Y/n.” Spencer mutters under his breath as you reverse out from the parking space, exiting the parking lot as those words linger on his tongue unsaid.

The civilian transport was very lucky.

In fact it was very lucky for a couple of reasons, the first being that it was only their secondary engine which had malfunctioned, not the warp core, second because at least their life support still worked, and three that they were close enough to an outpost , that their S.O.S was received in under a day by a very bored Tesraki, and an overly-talkative Rundi.

Their last stroke of luck might have been that there just so happened to be a UNSC ship passing by, on their way to the same original destination.

In fact, the civilian transport, piloted by some kind of space cruise company, offering interstellar tours, was attached to the harbinger in under an hour opening the doors and flooding the civilians with fresh cool air.

Krill was waiting with doctor Katie on the loading ramp just in case the civilians were in need of some sort of medical attention. He didn’t exactly have much experience with civilians. The harbinger was crewed, in large part, by military personnel and the occasional government contractor, so most of them were relatively professional, and most, if not all of them , were required to go through extensive training and physical testing before leaving their planet.

As the civilian humans disembarked, Krill got a sudden taste of human tourism.

Some very, very large humans, wearing widely unmatching clothing and strangely patterned shirts toddling through the doors with so much excess weight, he wondered how the human skeleton was capable of supporting such an egregious amount without simply imploding and turning to dust. The health implications were absolutely horrendous, and made him cringe to think about.

And if they weren’t big and colorfully dressed, they were rail thin, with plastic faces and puffy lips, the mark of cosmetic surgery done poorly. And with them they brought a hoard of screaming children, and moody teenagers their heads down glowering at their implanted communication devices, though Krill could hardly blame them from their moodiness.

A few more normal humans were there of course, averaging between the two extremes, and dressed conservatively for travel looking absolutely done with the entire thing and relieved when they stepped onto the cargo deck.

“Well it is about time!”

Krill and Dr. Katie turned their heads just in time to see the last human disembark shoving past the other guests and onto the floor, dragging with her two teenagers, one young child and her apologetic looking husband “It sure did take you long enough. And I swear once I have time I am going to be complaining to customer service. I will be complaining to the travel agency, and to the transport agency and.” She turned to glower at Dr. Katie and Dr. Krill,” And I will be complaining to you, whoever you people are for taking so long to show up.”

Krill glanced up at the woman who was only growing closer and closer, ominously looming over them. From this distance Krill got a better look of her badly maintained A line haircut, and her patchy blonde dye job with layers. She had a look on her face that were to suggest she perpetually had something sour in her mouth

Dr. Katie sighed, “Sorry ma’am. I can’t help you, I am a civilian medical contractor, not a member of the UNSC. I am just here to deal with any medical issues that you may have experienced during the malfunction.”

“Of course you’re UNSC, you work on the ship don’t you?”

Katie tried to remain patient, “Yes, I work on the ship, but like I said before I am a civilian contractor and have no ability to help you with your complaints. Is there any medical issue that I can help you with.”

“I demand a refund at once.”

Dr. katie Sighed, “I am a Dr. and I do not work for your touring company either. I am a private civilian medical contractor.” 

“And that was not a medical issue.” Krill added already annoyed.

By this time, the woman hadn’t even semed to notice him, but as soon as he spoke, she turned her eyes down towards him and screamed. She made a big show of falling backwards hand over her heart as if she had been shocked, “What is that!” Dr. Katie frowned, “This is Dr. krill, our OTHER civilian medical contractor.”

“Get it out of here, Immediately! I demand it be removed.” She backed away towards her family, “How dare you do something like this, my daughter has arachnophobia. I demand he be removed immediately”

Dr. Katie was frowning openly now, “I am not going to remove him from the deck. He is our chief medical officer, and not an arachnid. That is very rude, you may not know but it is considered a very offensive slur to call Vrul by those terms.”

“I don’t care, can’t you see what it is doing to my daughter!”

Dr. Katie and Dr. Krill turned to look at the teenage daughter, who, at that very moment looked like she wished to melt through the floor. It seemed that having all blood boiled out her ears in the vacuum of space would be way more preferable to this. Her husband was hiding his face, though no one said anything.

Behind her, the other tourists were looking wildly uncomfortable.

One of the large, colorful gentlemen stepped forward, “Why don’t we all just calm down, they are only trying to do their jobs.”

“Yeah, didn’t you hear them. They are civilian contractors.”

“You mind your own business.” She snapped turning back to the two of them. Behind her, her youngest son had gotten bored of the conversation and had wandered off. As they watched he busied himself with terrorizing the cargo crew darting in front of cargo carriers and screaming at the top of his lungs once he realized he could make his voice echo back to him.

“Ma’am, could you please get your son.” Dr Katie began, but was cut off.

“He can do what he wants. Don’t your bring my baby into this.”

“Mom-” The teenager began.

“Quiet Terrance.”

The boy shut his mouth joining his sister in wanting to melt through the floor.

She jabbed a finger at Krill, “Get that bug out of here NOW before I am forced to call someone.”

Krill watched in detached awe as Dr. katie grew very still. Her lips were drawn into a thing line, and the eyes behind her glasses narrowed sharply brows plunging, “I will not.” He was worried for a moment that Katie was going to flat out deck this woman, but she kept her cool, though her hands were balled into fists.

“I demand to speak with the manager!” The woman began screaming stomping her foot like a toddler.”

“Fine.” Doctor katie growled through clenched teeth, turning to look down at her implant before sending a text. 

The woman looked very smug sitting back with her arms crossed as Dr. katie and Krill were finally allowed to begin their work, going around to the other civilians and asking if they were feeling alright. The big colorful man, with the surprisingly pleasant voice  whispered an apology to them, “She's been a nightmare the whole trip. My wife and I were just coming out to gamble in some of those Tesraki casinos, you know try the exotic food, but she insisted that her son can’t eat any of that and that it shouldn’t be served on the ship or else he'd have some horrible allergic reaction. Honestly it's probably a load of bullshit.” 

His wife placed a hand on his arm, “Herold.” She scolded quietly 

“Sorry, dear. Anyway, you two are doing a great job.” Before looking down at Krill, “Watch out, there are some real xenophobes around these parts, and she might just be one of them.” 

In the background her kid was still making a mess bringing everything in the hold to a complete standstill.

Krill was appalled and almost impressed at how horrible this all was

There was a clattering towards the end of the room, and the group of them turned to see commander Vir, Sunny and a group of other drev walk into the space..

“Zha dah nee to chatahach nehkasi.”

“Zha janaik.”

“Tsa dee.”

“Geesee zha dee.”

“Nin tsa kasish, Chalan.”

“Zha nehrekazi. Zha lad nee gengi kasat.”

The group of them stopped in their tracks cutting their conversation mid go as the kid ran past them screaming, nearly knocking a pallet of crates off balance as he went.

Commander Vir frowned, “Hey! Knock it off!” The kid paused in his tracks a defiant expression in his eyes, and looked about ready to do something stupid. However a group of three Hulking Drev, and one eyeless human was enough  to send him scurrying to his mother, who was not happy.

She marched forward, “how dare you speak to my son like that. Who exactly do you think you are.”

“And who are you?” The commander asked.

“A paying customer.”

The commander looked confused, “Paying for what?” 

“Don’t play coy with me. You now what.”

“I can honestly tell you that I don’t know.” He turned his head back to the Drev “Nijeesh”, and motioned them off knowing this was going to take a while

She screeched, “Stop speaking to them in that language, this is a human ship! Speak human!” Krill an the other Drev looked on in confusion, considering that there were a couple of human languages to choose form, making her argument extra stupid.

“I paid for this tour, and now I demand to speak with your manager.”

The commander folded his arms, “We aren’t part of the tour company, we are part of the UNSC.”

“I don’t care.”

“Ma’am I cannot help you with the tour company. THe UNSC has nothing to do with civilian tours.”

She held up a hand in front of his face, “No, I won’t be talking to you anymore, not until is see a manager.” She snapped her fingers.

A small spark of fire lit in the man’s eyes, “I AM the manager.”

She laughed, barking like a condescending seal, “Don’t lie to me boy, you are too young. Now let me talk to an adult. The REAL manager.”

Commander Vir stared at her mouth open completely nonplussed, “I’m 25.”

“Exactly, clearly not old enough.”

He just held out his hands lost for words for a long moment before, a subtle change appeared in his expression. A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth, “My apologies, ma’am, we don’t technically have a manager aboard the ship, but this just so happens to be the UNSC Harbinger, so maybe I can get Commander Vir to speak with you.” 

Her eyes lit up hungrily at that. And Krill stared on in wonder and fascination.

“yes , I will speak with the commander.”

Her two teenagers looked up from their shame, and Krill could tell by the wide eyed expressions on their faces, they knew exactly who their mother was talking to. Both of their faces went beat red.

Commander Vir turned walked a few steps turned around and walked back standing up straighter, ‘Hello ma’am I am Fleet Commander Vir of the UNSC Harbinger, how may I be of assistance.”

The woman looked livid, “This isn’t funny! Now get me the real commander now!”

“mom/” One of her kids hissed.

She held out a finger.

“Mom!”

She turned to glare angrily at her child, “Not while the adults are speaking terrance.”

“But mom! He IS the commander!”

She turned to glower at her son, who was brandishing his implant with a picture of Adam in uniform, one of the images used for the movie.

It was time for her husband to speak up, “Dear…. He’s the one from that movie…” he trailed off.

She whirled around to face him face red with embarrassment as he stood there with a shit eating grin, but then, in her embarrassment, doubled down even harder, “Well no wonder this place is so poorly run. You’re too young to have the position you do. Is there someone ELSE more experienced I  can speak with.”

Commander Vir just stared at her, “Ma’am I am the highest power you are ever going to talk to. Even if I was god's secretary, you wouldn't get past the door. Now shut up get your crotch goblin, under contorl and keep your xenophobic agest ass quiet. I am not going to bother being polite to someone who has openly thrown speciesest slurs at my crew.” He motioned to the other passengers, “The rest of you are welcome onto the crew deck for the time being.” The rest of her family members visibly wilted, “Your two kids and your husband are allowed as well, but until you can learn a little respect, and treat my crew the way they deserve, you and your youngest can stay on the civilian transport alone.” 

From where she stood next to Krill, Dr. Katie giggled, “I love it when he gets all righteous indignation.” Krill had to agree with her.

Watching him turn and leave the woman speechless with fury behind him was extremely satisfying.

November 12th, 2000

Emile crossed his arms as he stared at Remy stubbornly. “Come on, Remy. It’s not stupid!” he defended.

Remy scoffed and Emile could feel his irritation rising. He didn’t want to snap, he definitely didn’t want to snap, but Remy certainly wasn’t making this conversation easy... “It’s cartoons, Emile. I’ve never met someone obsessed with cartoons who’s older than the age of twelve. I’ve met people who like anime, sure, but cartoons? That’s for kids!”

Emile scowled and considered bringing up how Remy liked comics, and weren’t those for kids, too? But decided against it. He wanted Remy to be his friend, he didn’t want them fighting over this all the time. “Let’s just talk about something else,” Emile suggested.

“Please,” Remy agreed.

  October 26th, 2002

Emile was trying his hardest not to laugh as Remy studied the costumes surrounding them like he was trying to read the Rosetta Stone. “Remy, this is not rocket science,” Emile said with a little laugh. “It’s picking out a costume so we can take the kids trick-or-treating Wednesday. You’re not gonna die if you pick something less-than-perfect.”

“That’s not the point, Emile,” Remy said back. “I want to pick a good costume because I might be using this for several years. I don’t want to be stuck as something I don’t like for several years.”

Emile looked around at the wall of pictures and sighed. “That might take a while, Rem. And I know it’s a Saturday, and neither of us have work, but you know the store closes at nine, right?”

“Ha. Ha ha. I can make a choice, Emile,” Remy said.

“You say that, and you’ve been staring at the same two costumes for the past fifteen minutes,” Emile said, rolling his eyes.

“Well, picking a costume isn’t easy! I can make a decision, I just need time,” Remy replied. “After all, if you’re going in that cowboy costume again, I need something besides ‘Sleep’ to go as.”

Emile caught sight of a purple and green costume at the end of the aisle and he gasped, clapping his hands over his mouth as he grinned. Remy whirled around to face Emile and Emile was shaking as he tried to hold back his laughter. “What? What did you see?” Remy asked.

“You’re gonna hate me if I point it out,” Emile said, laughing.

“No I won’t,” Remy scoffed. “What did you see?”

Emile silently pointed to the end of the aisle and Remy followed Emile’s finger, promptly rolling his eyes. “Of course,” he scoffed.

“I mean, you did call me Woody last year!” Emile reasoned.

“Sure, but do you honestly think I could pull off a Buzz Lightyear costume?!” Remy asked incredulously.

“I almost bought you one last year except I could only afford the cowboy costume comfortably,” Emile said with a shrug. “You don’t have to do it. If you really wanted, you could go dressed in drag.”

Remy paused. Emile sighed. “Okay, drag is probably an exaggeration. Fact remains, you don’t have to be Buzz Lightyear if you don’t want to be.”

“No, I like the idea, it’s cute,” Remy said. “I just don’t think I could pull it off.”

Emile hummed. “I see your point,” he conceded. “And truth be told, my cowboy costume might have been torn last time I wore it to the shelter to play with the kids. I was hoping I could repair it, but...maybe it’s just better to try something different.”

Remy nodded, before looking away and staring at something himself. “Oh. My. God. Emile, I just found the perfect costumes!”

“Oh, no,” Emile said, laughing even as dread built in his stomach. “Show me.”

Remy grabbed his wrist and dragged him to where the superhero costumes were. Emile laughed. “Rem, you’re worried about pulling off a Buzz Lightyear costume and then immediately go to the spandex section?”

“Shush,” Remy said, pushing around the costumes on the rack, before shoving a blue and red one into Emile’s arms. “This is your size. Where’s mine...”

Emile inspected the costume in his arms and made a noise of recognition as he noticed the large “S” on the front in red. “So you’re suggesting a couple’s costume, then?” he asked.

“What, you didn’t see the homoerotic tension between Batman and Superman?” Remy asked, still flipping through costumes.

“Aw, you’re not going as Lois Lane?” Emile asked.

Remy turned to Emile with a grin as he pulled a Batman costume off the rack. “Don’t tempt me.”

“You’re right, you’re right, I did just say drag might not be a good idea,” Emile conceded. “But why Batman? I thought you were more of a Marvel fan. Or at least, that you preferred indie comics over big corporations.”

“Okay, well, first of all, I like all comics, regardless of size, so jot that down,” Remy said simply. “Second of all, I don’t think I could reasonably go take kids trick-or-treating dressed as Deadpool. The sheer amount of questions I’d get asking why my Spiderman costume looks so funny...”

“Mm, you’re right, that would drive you insane,” Emile agreed. “Batman and Superman it is.”

Remy nodded definitively. “I’m going to insist we take pictures dressed up like this, fair warning,” he said.

“I would expect nothing less, my love,” Emile laughed.

Remy shot Emile a smile. “You’re not even complaining about a dorky couple’s costume. I’m not complaining, but I’m a little surprised.”

“Well, I mean, I think it’s cute,” Emile said. “And I see you get excited over comics sometimes, but definitely not as often as I geek out over cartoons. So seeing you get excited and passionate about the things you love is great to see. I’ll never complain about you showing your geek side.”

Remy laughed. “I mean, it’s a little scary, you know? Being vulnerable about the things you love. It can be intimidating to bare your soul like that. Sometimes I look back at when we first met and I cringe, because I realize how brave you were for admitting you love cartoons and being open about that, and I just...tried to tear you down for it.”

“But we’ve both grown since then, my love,” Emile pointed out, cupping Remy’s cheek as Remy glanced away. When Remy looked back, Emile continued, “You’ve learned not only how to be kind, but how to put yourself out there as well. And I’ve learned how to have a thicker skin, and not let people try to tear me down. I put up with it back then because I didn’t know any better and because I thought you were desperate for company. If someone tried to do that today, and you didn’t shout them down first, I’d explain step-by-step exactly why they shouldn’t do that until they feel like they were scolded by a disappointed dad.”

Remy laughed. “Oh, the disappointed dad talk? I can see you doing that, honestly. You’d be a good dad.”

Emile blinked. “I...what?”

“I mean, you don’t put up with crap when people try to walk all over you, but you’re also kind and offer your compassion freely,” Remy said with a shrug. “Just. I’d love having a dad like that.”

“And this has nothing to do with me donating my sperm and being ‘a catch for any lady at the sperm bank’? You just genuinely think that?”

“Duh?” Remy said. “Honestly, Emile, believe in yourself a little more. You’d be a great authority figure in any sense.”

Emile felt his heart warm and he couldn’t help but grin. “Wow, that means a lot, Rem. I didn’t expect it to, but that means a lot.”

“Yeah, I didn’t expect you to cling to that either, but it’s true,” Remy said. “Should we buy these costumes and head home?”

“Yeah, I’d like to be able to cook with you for dinner tonight, if you’re willing to put up with me,” Emile said.

Remy kissed Emile’s cheek. “It’s never a matter of ‘putting up’ when it comes to you, mio amore.”

They bought the costumes and headed home, and Emile checked the time when they walked in, finding it to be early evening. “Just in time for dinner,” he said, nodding to the clock.

“It would appear so,” Remy agreed. “Do you want something savory or sweet for dinner tonight?”

“Mm...savory,” Emile decided. “What are you thinking?”

“We have eggs, and some bacon strips left over from our last attempt at cooking them. We could always make a small quiche.”

“Ooh, that sounds amazing!” Emile said, eyes lighting up. It had been forever since he had last had Remy’s quiches, but Remy was a master at making them.

Remy laughed and brought out two pans, one which was oven-safe and the other which they pretty much only used to cook bacon. “You ready to cook?”

Emile hung his costume on one of the table’s chairs and laughed. “You know it!”

They worked around each other without issue, Remy giving Emile instructions on how to cook the bacon as Remy worked on the eggs and everything else he wanted to put in the quiche. “Y’know, Rem, I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of this,” Emile said.

Remy glanced at him. “This being...?”

“Us. Together. Making stuff and just hanging out,” Emile said with a shrug. “I’m really glad we became roommates.”

“That makes two of us,” Remy said with a soft smile. “That piece of bacon has been in the pan for long enough, I think.”

Emile moved the piece Remy was pointing at out of the pan and gave a happy sigh. “Do you ever just take a good long look at something domestic and think, ‘I want to do that with someone one day’?”

“Kind of,” Remy said. “Except usually it’s not ‘one day,’ it’s, ‘I want to do that with Emile soon.’”

Emile turned bright red and he laughed. “Oh, come on! You’re gonna be the death of me at this rate!”

“If I kill you, true love’s kiss will bring you back to life,” Remy said definitively.

“And you’re gonna be my Prince Charming?” Emile asked. “You’d be my true love’s kiss?”

“Always,” Remy said with a little grin. “For as long as you want me to be, I will always be your Prince Charming.”

Emile grinned. “I’m super glad you say that,” he said. “It’s good to know that you’re just as much in this for the long-haul as me. I wouldn’t necessarily say more so, simply because I don’t intend on ever leaving you, but if I don’t intend on leaving you and you don’t intend on leaving me, we’re definitely at the same level.”

“Don’t be so sure about that. I will bug you in Purgatory and beyond,” Remy warned with a smirk. “I will bug you for all eternity if you don’t stop me.”

“Good,” Emile said with a grin. “And I will never stop you.”

Remy grinned and kissed Emile, and Emile giggled. “Careful, we’re by a hot stove!” he warned.

“Care to move elsewhere, then?” Remy asked with a wink.

“Let’s get dinner in the oven first,” Emile said with a little giggle.

Remy groaned and Emile laughed more. “Come on, Remy. We can get dinner in the oven in a matter of minutes and then we can have all the fun we want until the quiche is cooked!”

“Sure, but I want the fun now!” Remy whined.

Emile shook his head fondly as he moved all the bacon to the plate and turned off the stovetop. “You are such a hedonist,” Emile said.

“And, what, that’s a bad thing?” Remy asked.

“No. Just exasperating at times,” Emile replied. “You’re my hedonist, though. I’m not giving you up.”

Remy grinned and peppered Emile’s face with kisses and Emile laughed. “Remy! We have to get dinner in the oven first! I just told you that!”

“I know, but that doesn’t mean I can’t kiss you just a little,” Remy said in between kisses.

“This is not ‘just a little,’” Emile laughed, chopping up the bacon and putting it with the rest of the ingredients in the quiche. “Come on. Finish what you need to. Then we can have whatever fun you want.”

“Ooh, whatever I want?” Remy asked, eyes lighting up.

“Within reason!” Emile said, holding a finger up in a warning. “I am not letting you tie me to the bed!”

“Aw, and here I was hoping we’d get to have some fun tonight!” Remy said with an exaggerated pout and a laugh.

Emile shook his head, kissing Remy’s cheek and nuzzling into his neck. “How about this: you finish up getting the quiche in the oven, and I’ll meet you in the bedroom?”

“Mm, sounds perfect,” Remy said, kissing Emile back. “And I hope you know that one of these days? We’re going to break the bed.”

“I look forward to it,” Emile said with a laugh.

Memories of You: The Balcony

Roxas figured some fresh air would do him some good and he returned to the balcony Paine dragged him to earlier, resting his arms against the white wooden railing. With his mind finally clear, he was able to admire the stars speckling against a dark midnight blue backdrop. His mother always taught him about the existence of another side where hearts go after they pass on from the land of the living. The idea was appealing as a child but as he grew older, he began to question it. Did an afterlife truly exist? Was there a chance his father was looking down at them with a proud smile? He didn't have anything to go off of other than his mother's word that he would understand someday, but it was beginning to feel like a fairy tale designed to keep traumatized children from succumbing to despair. 

Roxas dug into his pocket and salvaged the balled up card Rufus originally gave him earlier. After wrinkling his eyebrows, he ripped the card into two and carelessly tossed the severed pieces into the air, watching the evening breeze carry it through the night.

"Roxas?"

Naminé stood by the door frame behind him with her head giving a slight tilt. She was still wearing those ridiculous shades. 

"Sorry," Roxas apologized, putting on a friendlier demeanor. "I just needed some air. I should have told you."

Naminé leaned against the railing along with him. "I just wanted to make sure you were okay."

"I'm fine. Just needed some time to think."

"About what?"

"About what I'm going to do with my life," Roxas answered rather quickly. "About where I belong or what I'm supposed to do. I've had all this pressure and expectations put on me and I'm not sure how to handle it."

"Sounds pretty deep. For you, anyway."

"Thank—hey, wait. What do you mean, for me?"

Naminé let out a delicate giggle into her closed fist. She could see his smile through the tint of her sunglasses. His company was always so pleasant. She couldn’t remember the last time she could bear being in the same room with another soul outside of her immediate family for more than five minutes without feeling a crippling urge to drop dead on the spot. To think that she nearly wouldn’t have experienced this moment with him if it hadn't been for her father dragging her to this surprisingly eventful dinner party in the first place. The thought brought a frown to her lips. 

Roxas didn’t fail to notice it. "What's wrong?" 

"I... have a confession to make." 

He crossed his arms. "What is it? You can tell me."

"I, um... I didn't really come here because I wanted to," she painfully admitted. "Not at first, anyway. I mean, I'm glad I came because it turned out to be really fun, but... I was originally planning on not showing up, even after Kairi tried talking me into it. I’m only here because my dad forced me to come because I guess he wants to keep an eye on me." She lowered her head in shame. "I'm sorry."

"What are you apologizing for?"

"Aren't you mad at me?"

"Why would I be mad?" Roxas asked with an airy chuckle. 

Finding his reaction unexpected, Naminé blinked. "Well, I'm not here because it was my decision, like you said it should be. I-I mean... it's not like I came because I'm a good friend or because I'm making a real effort to come out of my shell. I didn't have a choice in the first place, and if I did, it wouldn't have resulted in me being here with you right now.” 

"But you are here. That's what matters in the end, right?"

"But I—"

"Listen," Roxas interrupted gently. "Whether you wanted to come or not, you still did. You still went through the trouble of finding something to wear. You still walked through those doors. You even let me introduce you to my friends. You didn't have to do any of that, but you did. That has to count for something." He smiled. "Whether you realize it or not, you're trying. That's all that matters to me."

Naminé felt her lips part momentarily before turning her head to downplay the shy smile growing against her own will. "You're so mushy."

Roxas chuckled. "Yeah, I’ve heard it from Xion more than once."

Naminé still couldn’t inwardly deny a fragment of guilt lingering in the back of her mind. She wished she had the resolve to face her fears and take the initiative in the first place without her father’s demands being the main catalyst for her attendance. If anything, she could do it for Roxas. In the short amount of time they’ve known each other, he’s been such a good friend to her. Naminé tried to convince herself that taking this step was for her own sake, but she wanted to take his feelings into account as well. Seeing that look of the purest form of joy glowing in his eyes when he first saw her earlier that evening was something she was glad she didn't miss out on. She promised herself she would make it up to him, even if he didn't feel like she needed to. For their next outing, and yes, there would be a next, she would go of her own volition. Not because anyone told her to go. But because he was her friend and he deserved it.

"You’re sweet, Roxas."

Roxas couldn’t tear his eyes away from her smile. And oh, what a pretty smile it was. It would only be prettier if he could see the eyes designed to complement it. "Naminé, why are you still wearing those?"

Her smile faltered. "I told you before—I can't handle eye contact."

"Not even right now?" he asked, closing the small distance between them. "Not even with me?"

Naminé pressed her lips together. There was something about wearing the shades that made her feel more secure. It made her interactions with others more impersonal. "What difference would it make?"

"More than you might think.” Roxas scratched his cheek. “I just kinda want to see you. Those shades make me feel like there's a wall between us. You shouldn't have to hide behind these. You don't need them."

"B-But I do," she argued. "I get so nervous when people look at me, like if I'm looking at their eyes in the wrong way or they get the wrong idea or if I'm staring at people for an uncomfortable amount of time, people don't have to know what I'm looking at and—and—"

"Naminé," Roxas said, effectively cutting her rambling short as he placed his hands on her shoulders. "Trust me."

Naminé felt her lips quivering before she let out a deep sigh. She knew she was making excuses. He was right. It shouldn't have been a big deal. Besides, it was Roxas. She didn't have much trouble looking him in the eyes anymore. As long as it was someone like him or Kairi, she could live with it.

"So, is it okay if I take these off?" he asked.

Naminé nodded reluctantly. Roxas held the sides of her sunglasses and pulled them from her ears tenderly. Her eyes fluttered open; soft blue with the stars ornamenting sparkles into their reflection. It was the first time he saw her eyes the entire night and the first word that came to his mind was... 

Breathtaking.

In the corners of his mind, Roxas always found Naminé attractive even when he first laid eyes on her. But this was the first time he had seen her dolled up, her soft features highlighted to near perfection. His eyes trailed to her lips that were parted slightly—he gulped. He had a dangerous, crazy thought involving his own lips he would not allow himself to act on. Quite frankly, he wasn't sure where it came from, but he blamed it on his dumb teenage boy hormones. Roxas cleared his throat before she could get nervous at his staring.

"See? You don't need these," he said, placing the sunglasses into his back pocket. 

Despite his encouragement, Naminé couldn’t resist the urge to squirm under his gaze. Sure, she had looked him in his eyes before, but not under a circumstance like this. With her eyes exposed, it brought about a sense of vulnerability she wasn’t accustomed to. If eyes truly were windows to the soul, then Roxas was getting a peak at hers. Just the thought of that made her rip her eyes away from his. What if he didn’t like what he saw? 

"Hey, Naminé..." Roxas said softly. The way her name rolled off his lips was starting to make Naminé weak in the knees.

"Y-Yes?"

However, any potential butterflies in her stomach fueled by anticipation were thrown out the window with his next words.

"Staring contest!"

"H-Huh?!"

Roxas grabbed her by the shoulders and forced her to look up at him. Her wide, confused eyes were locked with his intense, focused ones. Neither moved for a solid five minutes. Or at least, Naminé felt like it was five minutes. Despite not knowing what was going on or where this came from, she suddenly caught wind of the competitive bug and didn’t want to lose. She returned his stare with an equal amount of intensity, refusing to back down from his challenge. A third spectator might have thought they were furious at each other.

The contest proved difficult for Naminé. Roxas wouldn't budge, not even so much as a wince. She felt her eyes threatening to leak and clenched her teeth after what felt like an eternity of staring. But she couldn't lose. She wanted another excuse to rub something in his face.

Then he blew into her eyes, practically forcing her into a rapid sequence of blinks. 

"I win!"

Naminé continued to blink if only to moisturize her dried up eyes while Roxas laughed at her expense. It was bad enough she was wearing contacts. Did he really need to blow into them? "You cheater!"

"I never said you couldn't sabotage your opponent," Roxas said cheekily.

"Wow. Thanks for letting me know, jerk."

"But hey, you see? Eye contact isn't so bad."

“Okay, but there's a difference between managing eye contact and an actual staring contest."

But for some reason, it did help. She was making eye contact with him without an issue. It was easier when there was something so silly and weird to break the ice. That must have been his plan the whole time. The rascal. 

“Still, it’s not like I can just walk up to a stranger and force them into a random staring contest if I want to break the ice,” Naminé challenged. 

“Hey, you never know.” Roxas shrugged, making Naminé send an unconvinced gaze. “Kidding. It’ll get easier with time, though,” he assured. “Maybe with some practice.” 

She sighed. "That's what they always say. It just stinks when practice involves putting yourself into situations you're not comfortable with."

“Well, are you comfortable now?” 

Naminé replaced her frown with a soft smile. “Well, sure. I’m with you, aren’t I?” 

“Then that’s good enough.” 

They descended into a gentle silence, their eyes bound to the night sky. Naminé came to an epiphany. Their conversation dwindled and somehow it wasn’t awkward in the slightest. What madness was this? Weren’t long pauses supposed to be uncomfortable and inelegant? Was there not an unspoken expectation to fill the silence and alleviate the tension on both sides? Yet there she was in the company of another human being partaking in a peaceful lull that made her feel the furthest thing from tense. In fact she felt, dare she say, relaxed? 

The pleasant scenery surely helped. While far from turbulent, Destiny Islands was noticeably more animated during the daytime. But the night allowed for the evening lanterns to come alive and highlight the town’s fine points with its tropical aesthetic. The darkened sea engulfed the majority of the horizon and in the short distance sat a tiny island Naminé had never been to before. The sight had to be out of a fairy tale novel. 

"This place really is beautiful," Naminé said, filling the silence as she clasped her hands together. Not because she was uncomfortable. Just because she felt like it.

"It is," Roxas agreed, leaning on the railing while turning to face her with a grin. 

Though, the sky wasn’t the only thing he found alluring that night. Naminé truly was more beautiful than even he had anticipated. Something about the way her eyes captured a soft volume of contentment tugged at something inside him. The way her hair was tied up in a bun with loose strands framing her porcelain face. The way her dress highlighted her slender figure that wasn't without subtle but very visible curves. She was always cute, but this was different.

Should he have admitted his attraction to her? It wasn't always easy to predict how Naminé would react to things. Everything seemed to have a half-and-half probability. With a compliment, he could see her taking the praise and thinking nothing of it just as much as he could see her rejecting his opinion and finding it too overwhelming and embarrassing to be true. But transparency was something Naminé needed to become more acquainted with. 

There was also the implication. Would she perceive it as some sort of confession? Roxas wasn't sure if he viewed Naminé in that way. Did he really like Naminé in the way Axel suggested? He sincerely didn't think so before, but now—having her there, to see her trying to put in more of an effort, and the fact that her inner and external beauty was becoming more evident...

He wasn't sure.

"Is everything okay?" Naminé asked, her voice returning him to the present.

"Oh, yeah," Roxas said, mulling on his next words. "It's just—I think you look really beautiful tonight. I, uh... thought I'd let you know."

While the blush was imminent, she took it better than he expected. She didn't flail her arms around like a manic and she didn't have a nervous breakdown. She only stared at him in momentary surprise before the ends of her lips offered him the slightest of curls. "Th-Thank you, Roxas." She gulped. "I-I was... thinking the same thing about you."

He raised a brow. "That I look beautiful? I mean, I'm flattered and all, but—"

"No, goofball," she said, replacing her smile with a pout. He was just trying to pull the proper words out of her and she knew it. "You l-look... good.” 

“Good?” 

“Um... h-h-handsome?" That was the correct word, right?

Roxas snickered. He could never get tired of watching her twist and turn with discomfort. "Just tell me you love me already, why don't you?"

"I take it back..."

"Oh, come on! I'm joking."

"Can't you go five seconds without teasing me?"

"What kind of a question is that? I can't even go three seconds."

"There's something we agree on."

"Fine," Roxas groaned. "I'll take you out for mint chocolate chip ice cream to make up for it, Ms. Killjoy. Take a joke, would you?"

"I most certainly can take a joke! Excuse me for thinking we were having a moment."

“So, you were wanting us to have a moment?” 

“Th-That’s not the point!” 

“Except it totally is.” 

“Shut up.” 

While they bantered, Xion, who was about to go check on Roxas herself, stood around the corner listening to the echoes of their laughter.

That Damned Goofy Smile

Summary: there is just that one damned goofy smile that gets you all the time.

a/n: just a little disclaimerー i believe that high school in korea is a little bit late unlike other country so their ages here are around 19-20 already, but you know, if i believed wrong, just remember that they're 19-20 already thanks ☆

You never really thought about the situation both you and Kino had for at least 2 years because it went great, to be awfully honest, everything was just great.

How you two met, how you two got close, how you and his friends got close, get in the same passionー dancing. Everything just went great, except for one thing.

Thinking about how great your friendship was with the man, you almost forgot how painful it was to wake up every single day and look at his face on the corner of the room, staring at another girl.

It has been a cycle and it's not like it bothered you that much anymore and that's what you always thought, until a tall figure bugged you for how gruesome you look at the girl Kino has been staring at, "Hey, y/n, you know if you just told Hyunggu what you really feel then maybe you could save some holes you were boring on Minah," Wooseok nudged his elbow on your waist and almost laughed at your annoyed look but stopped when you met his eyes with yours.

Wooseok can see the loneliness and pain in your eyes. It doesn't take a genius to figure those out, and it doesn't take a clueless Kino to feel something for you the way you did with Kino.

You first met Kino when you were having an audition on a dance club back in your first year in high school. You were new in the city and have no friends, you're basically nothing, and it didn't bother you because all you ever wanted to do was to be able to speak in English, dance until your legs give up on you and ace those academic grades because you wanted to go abroad and enroll in a medical school. Nothing much, right?

You were not nervous at all, when the first beat of the music came into your ears and everyone's eyes gazed on you, none of those made you feel slimy, none except a smile from a certain boy sitting on the right side of the room. He seemed unbothered when you fixed your eyes on him while you danced, he's even nodding to the beat and give adorable reactions to your dance moves, and maybe then, you thought, high school in a new place was fun.

When you finished, only that man clapped for you. He's had his smile so wide that it physically hurts you because of how cute they were and gave you the thumbs up that you were longing from the coach.

You wanted to talk to him, but instead of talking to him, you formed your lips to a straight line and nodded at him. You were sure that the encounter would be nothing but a mere coincidence.

Eventually, you received a call from the coach, you gathered your things from the locker, changed into a pair of dance clothes and ran towards the practice room that's on the other side of your wide campus. You didn't pay any attention to your surroundings. You'd rather have students go frenzy at you than have your coach create a havoc on your tardiness, but as always, that man was an exception to your principles.

After seeing you run like a madman, he bid farewell to his friends, Wooseok who looked at you really well and Shinwon who's just bored to be honest, and ran to reach you and your pace. He has his goofy smile on his face and calming eyes that looked at you the way no other guy would look at you before. It shouldn't bother you, really, but it did.

Trying to catch your breath, you slightly turned your head at him whilst running, "You were accepted too?"

You breathily asked him which earned you a chuckle, "Of course," like he was stating the obvious, "I'm Kino," he introduced with the goofy smile still plastered on his face. He reached at your hand and turned your body to look at his that made you stop on your tracks. He held your right hand to his hand and shook it, "The leader of the dance group."

With that said, your eyes widened, so much, that it made him chuckle for the nth time around. Returning your warm hand to your side, he began to run towards the practice room and leave you hanging, watching his back slowly moving away from you, "Welcome to the group y/n!"

You became friends, especially because you're one of the few people that actually impresses him when it comes to dancing. He's the one who bugged the coach to accept you and he's the one who everyone in the campus knows, but you. If you knew who he is and what he actually is, you wouldn't really have those warm feelings the moment you two have encountered, but fate spared you no chance, it made you and Kino close to each other. Really close.

"So, like, are you two together now?" Shinwon lazily asked Kino and pointed at you two while munching on a convenience store burger that according to him tastes like crap.

You choked on your water and looked pleadingly at Wooseok who instantly brought his hand to your back and pat it. You wanted to hear Kino's answer so bad, so bad that it makes you want to puke when he responded, "No, we're really good friends, besides I really like Seungyeon," and shook his shoulders.

It didn't hurt you, but it did hurt Wooseok and none of you knew.

It already has been a routine for you and Kino and his friends to sit together for every breaktime you had because Kino really wanted you to have a company and he really likes your vibe. You're a good friend to him and a great dance partner, so why wouldn't he want his friends, and of course him, to be with you?

You were already with them for about half a year now and indeed, it earned a lot of bashful look from his and his friends' fangirls, but it only took a glance from Wooseok for them to get off you.

With a soft voice, Wooseok turned to you after looking at the girls who' were trying to bully you, "Hey, are you okay? Why didn't you tell us that you were bothered by them?"

"Well, first, I am not bothered. They were just trying to mess up with me because I was close with you three. Second, what can they do to me? Pull my hair? Rip my clothes? There's nothing that scares me, Wooseok," you replied to Wooseok and sign your hands with an OK to make Wooseok stop worrying about your little figure. What you said were real, it's not like they were trying to do something to you. They were just menacingly talking loudly asking how a dirty woman like you is with their oppas or whatever.

Wooseok who's clearly not satisfied, took your books from your arms and ushered you to go towards where you were supposed to go. He didn't look at you, but with a low, soft voice, he made sure to let you hear what he's about to say, "but I am scared of them hurting you," which made you stop your tracks and looked confusingly at his back.

What the hell? You asked yourself.

It was 3 in the morning and your cell phone was ringing and it is not funny for you because you were really tired from your practice last night.

Making sure to scold the person on the other line, you took your phone and answered it without reading whose call it was from.

"For the love of God, if this is not important, I am gonー"

Much to your surprise, Kino's voice rang on the other line of the call, "you're gonna what, y/n?"

Instantly, your half-asleep eyes went to a full-awake mode by now and stared at the digital clock that's blinking the numbers 3:07 in the morning.

"What happened? It's late, Kino."

"I know and I am sorry if I called this late especially now that you're really tired, but can you please open your window and looked down because I'm kind of freezing and I don't want to wake your brother up, he might beat me up," Kino said with a short chuckle.

You got up and ran towards your window and looked down at the balcony to see Kino who's looking at you with his sad eyes.

You got your phone back to your ear, you were about to ask him why he's still wearing his dance clothes, but instead, you listened to his soft sobs that were not able to stay behind his throat.

"She dumped me."

You curled your brows together and questioned yourself, Seungyeon and him was a thing?

Shinwon just sighed at the figure of his now three friends. One of them, you, was just staring at her untouched sandwich, another, Wooseok, was staring at you staring at your sandwich and the other was staring at a distance, looking for a woman, who was once his, now got to be another man's girl.

He knew that Kino purposely didn't tell you about his lovey dovey with Seungyeon, and that Wooseok was really trying his best to protect you from the fangirls. He knew every side glance Wooseok will make to see you doing different sort of things, he knew that Kino, too, will side glance at you just to see at your reaction whenever he made a joke. He can see everything, he's not that blind like what you three ought him to be.

And now that it came to this, he needed to step down his shoes in between you three.

"Now, now, I will talk to you three one by one, no buts and what so freaking ever, I can see you three having issues," Shinwon said as he slammed his hands onto the table in front of you three. Yes. Infront.

You three are always sitting beside each other with you in the middle, and if that doesn't speak a lot to any of you three, it certainly does to him.

"Come on now, kids."

You were the first one to be dragged by Shinwon to the corner of the canteen. He made sure to be out of sight of the other two idiots and he made sure that you four had a long break time to actually do this counseling thing he's about to do.

He planned this, trust him.

Shinwon just flicked your forehead and threw you a disgusted look, "Seriously, you went into our group just to destroy the two?"

You didn't understand what he meant with that. You just stared at Shinwon's face, waiting for his next sermon, which he did.

"We were okay y/n before you came, and now you're gonna show up to our faces, bring Kino into your trap and have Wooseok protect you like a weakling, missy? And no, I am not being mean, I like you as our friend, really, but you're justー" Shinwon spit fires after fires, and threw his hand on his hair, ripping it out of frustration, "AAAAAH, you're so clueless dude, I hate you."

This was his way. He never really wanted to be so nice at this counselling thing with you three, he wanted you and the other two to know the reality and not some covered up lies. He needed you to know that you are being kids.

You stood there motionlessly, blinking at your surprise at Shinwon's throw of fit or anger, you can't distinguish and just really looked at him talk so much.

"I do think you're great, dude, you dance like Kino, you ace your acads and I am not loving that and you're fun to be with, but why do you have to fool yourself and believe that it doesn't hurt you when it definitely should?" Shinwon flicked your forehead for the second time, this time was a little bit harder than the earlier.

With an annoyed face you spat at Shinwon, "Do you know what hurts, huh?! You flicking my foreheadー"

"Knowing that Kino chose Seungyeon and not you, y/n, that's what's hurting you right now," Shinwon interrupted you with an almost inaudible voice. He wanted you to listen to him, carefully, like the voice talking to you inside your head, and he was successful.

You looked down and didn't want to bring your face to look at Shinwon's honest eyes, "no," you mumbled, "no, Shin, no" you mumbled again.

You didn't want to admit that.

But when you heard Kino's sob against your ear, you ran to your front door immediately and rushed to his spot only to embrace him.

You always knew that you and him has a special bond and when it clenched your chest hard that night, you thought it was just the bond.

But Shinwon's right,

"It shouldn't hurt this much, Shin."

Kino talked nonstop about what you and Shinwon might be talking about, how he's not a good friend to you, not noticing that you're just as broken as he is and that he didn't know the reason. He's really disappointed of himself.

But Wooseok, who just watched you and didn't answer any of Kino's questions, looked at you with worry when you went back to the table with Shinwon on your front. Desperately trying to hide your crying face.

Wooseok wanted to get closer to you and embrace you because it didn't feel great to see you cry.

Whoever the reason may be.

"You big child, come with me or I'll destroy your games," Shinwon looked sharply at Wooseok when you sat down having your face low.

Still not able to look at Kino's eyes who's looking for yours and Wooseok's eyes who's trying to see your puffy eyes and face, you sighed and made sure to never say anything else.

Wooseok was then pulled by Shinwon, knowing that the younger will not budge from where he's standing, he had to take extreme measures.

When they got to Shinwon's office as he may say, Wooseok just wanted this to end fast and talk to you that's why he asked his hyung as fast as he could, "what's with this hyung, please do it faster, she's crying, she needs me—" Wooseok stopped when a hand went up at his face.

"No, she doesn't need you at all, you fool."

Shinwon didn't have to wait for any response from the young one.

"You're no second leading man, you should be the main. Why settle for the second one? Girls are lining up for you, bro, they're just as pretty as y/n, why not just go with them?"

Shinwon wasted no time fooling around with Wooseok because he knew that Wooseok is the sanest one out of the three. In par of being sane is him being an idiot.

Wooseok didn't have to think hard because the answer will always be, "because they're not y/n, hyung."

"And you're not Hyunggu either."

He knew all of that, he didn't need Shinwon to tell him that. He knew that he can be with any other girl right now who's just as hot, but he's not looking for someone who's hot, he's looking for you. Waiting for you.

Because somewhere in this life, he wishes to become that Hyunggu to you.

Because if he can be that Hyunggu to you, then he'll become the Wooseok you never saw him to be.

Kino tried his best to get you to talk to him, but to no avail, you just looked down with your hands hiding your true feelings for him. You can't let him see you like this, nor you'd like to see him right now.

"Hey, please talk to me," Kino pleaded, having his hand on your shaking shoulder, "I don't want to see you crying, y/n," he poked your skin once, twice, thrice and when he almost got to the fourth time, a large hand took his finger and get it away from your skin.

"Just leave her alone, Hyunggu," Wooseok's deep voice alarmed Kino more than his real name should and that's when Shinwon demanded Kino to follow him.

While Kino tried to whine on Shinwon and Shinwon didn't want any kind of bullshit Kino has to offer now that he's tired of talking to his idiot friends, he threatened Kino with just a sentence that made Kino stood up from his chair.

"No Hyunggu, you'll follow me because I am sure that if you won't, you'll regret it."

Hearing his real name from Shinwon meant a lot to him. Shinwon always calls him by Kino and when he messes up, real good, Shinwon would start to call him by Hyunggu, and when that happens, shit's about to get real. That was why he followed Shinwon to wherever he brings them and faced him with enough respect.

"I am not going to play with you Hyunggu, get your shit together or else she'll leave you," Shinwon was straightforward, too straightforward to Kino's liking.

"What?" Kino replied with a slight shock.

"I am not joking. Cry over a spilled milk, for all I care, Hyunggu, but never cry for the wrong milk," Shinwon grinned to himself for a while and brought back his serious face, "and right now, you are."

This time, Shinwon didn't wait for the younger to walk out of the scene, rather, he's the one who did, well he felt cool after saying that metaphor and walking out is an another level of coolness to him. Kino loved playing with words because he loves books, he likes to read and make songs. He's very expressive that's why he's such a sweetheart to everyone's eyes.

But that sweetheart can be a bit of an asshole sometimes, and right now, he is, to you, that is why Shinwon will take extreme measures like what he said.

Kino followed him silently to the table and see Wooseok hugging your figure.

He wasn't able to understand the metaphor Shinwon told him, but when he saw you being hugged by an another strong frame such as Wooseok, he now understood what his hyung meant then.

And truthfully, that sucks.

Kino soon moved on from his heartbreak from Seungyeon to having a tiny bit of crush with Jungha. A transferee and a new member of his dance club.

Jungha is somehow your acquaintance. She literally follows you everywhere, even if you and Kino are practicing your routine, she's still there, looking and just watching, maybe you or maybe Kino, who knows.

The air between you and Kino returned to normal, but you felt like he was trying to limit it. Not that you can complain, nor you should complain at all, but right after your talk with Shinwon, you've realized that everything was just a puppy crush. For you it hurts that bad because he didn't tell you and that he's your close friend, and you don't know, maybe that's it.

Wooseok and you have gotten much closer than before, it sometimes makes you wonder if Kino was actually the reason you got to know the other two, when he should've been the closest person to you now—

"Hey lady, you should hold on to my neck or else you'll fall, I am not as strong as you think I am," Kino softly complained, trailing you out of your thoughts.

You looked at the mirror and saw your position with Kino, more than that, you saw Jungha's eyes, hovering the two of you, and yes, it didn't feel comfortable at all.

But maybe to Kino, it was.

Kino released his arms on you and turned to your new acquaintance, "Hey Jungha, do you wanna grab some food later?" He asked with a goofy smile.

And when you saw that smile and heard him say that, again, it shouldn't, but it did hurt you, so much that all you could do was walk to your bag and drag it outside.

One day, Kino brought his now girlfriend, Jungha to your table and introduced her to the other two. With Wooseok beside you and Shinwon in front of Kino, all three of you sighed, at the same time and Kino still wasn't able to notice that.

Shinwon just looked at you and Wooseok, he knew that what he did before, stepping inside of your messes, was the right thing, but what he didn't knew was that there was a miscalculation to that counselling.

He shouldn't have let Kino see Wooseok hugging you that day, because that created this, and he's not living for it.

"Ya! You were going to treat me some ice cream, remember?" Wooseok nudged on you and took the ice cream you were holding to lick a good amount of it, which you instantly yanked from him and protected like it was a treasure, "this. is. mine. go to hell Wooseok," you said and stuck your tongue out at him.

Little did you know, it was not just Shinwon who was watching you and Wooseok banter, Kino was, too.

And you were oblivious of that.

It took Kino and Jungha 5 months to break up, and a moment for you to soften you heart once again when you see an another Kino standing in front of your front door. You were supposed to go get some food on a convenience store but forget the rest of your agenda in just a second.

That's just Kino's effect on you.

"Really, I am never going to love someone again," Kino said with a sigh and welcomed himself in your house.

Lucky for him, your brother was having a date, therefore, Kino will not be banished outside like before.

Because it's 11 o'clock in the evening.

You followed Kino to your bedroom and watched him roll over your bed like it was his, "Hyunggu, I would appreciate it if you stopped doing that," you said while pointing at him.

He turned around to look at you.

He didn't cry, he didn't want to. It's not like what he and Jungha had was something real. For him, none of it was.

He just wanted to move on, like how you did with him. He just wanted a Wooseok like you, that was why he had a Jungha.

And yes, he knew he was being an asshole, not just to you and Jungha, but to himself. But when he saw you and Wooseok hugging that day, God knows how much it killed him, seeing you being embraced by an another man, which was his friend nevertheless, made him insane.

But you were happy.

And who the hell is he to stop you from being happy?

"You know what, y/n, come here," Kino pat the side of the bed for you to come and join him. Of course, you did.

He didn't bother wasting a second more when you laid your ass on the mattress and hugged you, just like before, but now, it was slightly different.

And you couldn't pinpoint what was the difference.

But you felt him wanting to say something to you.

"I appreciate you, y/n, so bad, and I think I'm going crazy."

"Pleaseー" he said kissing your hair, "choose me."

Which he did say, but it is something of which you didn't hear.
