The Chief And Her Bride
Fandom: HTTYD
Rating: E
Pairing: Hiccup/Astrid
Theme: fem!cup. femslash. fluff. smut
Summary: Astrid loves Hiccup dearly, but she never expected for their relationship to last. So it falls to Hiccup to convince her girlfriend that she won't let anyone separate them. Not even her own father.
AN: Finally! I've been working on this little story for ages, and now, finally, the first chapter is done. What do we have? Female Hiccup and Astrid, in a canon-like setting after HTTYD where Stoick lives, Valka didn't stay, and RTTE is semi-canon. I take what fits. This mostly was supposed to be a test for me whether I even can write femslash. I'm still practising, but I also like this story very much. Also, I thought a while about whether to change Hiccup's name or not, but in the end, I decided against it.
. o O o .
It didn’t take Astrid long to find Hiccup. There was only one place her girlfriend would go when she was stressed or upset, and so Astrid wasn’t surprised at all when she spotted Toothless’s black form lounging near the pond when she and Stormfly reached the cove. Hiccup sat to the side, her back against a rock, her good leg tugged under herself, and her eyes gazing unseeingly into the distance.
After landing, Astrid affectionately scratcher her dragon at her belly before sending her off to play. Then she sauntered over to where Hiccup sat, still lost in her thoughts.
“Hey,” Astrid greeted her as she got closer.
Hiccup blinked before turning her head, then gave her a warm if a little tense smile. “Hey.”
Astrid let herself slide to the ground next to Hiccup. “So… what happened?” she asked. There was no point in pretending nothing had happened; Hiccup had left the village without a word after talking to her father, and Astrid knew Hiccup too well to be fooled.
Hiccup gave a suppressed sigh. She reached for a fallen leaf and nervously picked it apart with her nimble fingers.
“This morning, my dad wanted to talk to me,” she eventually said, and Astrid nodded. She’d noticed that much. “It’s… After what happened with Drago, he wants me to be prepared to take over the village at any moment. Which makes sense, I guess, with how Dad almost got killed in that fight.” She looked up, her pretty green eyes meeting Astrid’s. “And I don’t really mind. I mean, I get it. I need to be prepared and all. It’s just–” She broke off, lips pressed into a thin line.
Astrid reached for Hiccup’s hand, entwining her fingers with her own. “What is it, babe?”
Oh, she had an idea of what Stoick had brought up for his daughter to be so upset. But, maybe, it was something else. Maybe they would have a last reprieve.
Hiccup swallowed. “Dad... He wants me… wants me to get married.” She scratched at her neck and gave Astrid a tense look. “He said that, for the good of the people, I should get a strong partner, someone who can help me carry the burden. Mum returning to live at her sanctuary must have hit him harder than he’s letting on.” Hiccup chuckled weakly, but quickly turned serious again, solemn even.
However, Astrid had barely listened anymore after Hiccup’s first words. Ever since they’d confessed their love to each other two years ago, she’d known it would come to this. Awkward as it had been at first, Astrid was never as happy as in the minutes she got to spend with Hiccup, feeling her touch, her kiss, her body against her own. She loved her, her wit, her intelligence, the way they constantly challenged each other in different ways. But right from the beginning, there had always been an end date for them. The village had accepted their relationship without much irritation, even Stoick. But that was probably because they’d all known it couldn’t last.
Slowly, Astrid withdrew her hand from Hiccup’s, hoping that she wouldn’t notice how much her fingers were shaking. This was going to be hard, for both of them. But she knew it would be even harder for Hiccup if she knew how much their inevitable breakup affected Astrid.
“So, it’s over then,” she whispered, nodding. Gods, why was her voice so brittle? “And I think Stoick is right, Berk will need strong leaders. We can’t only rely on the dragons to protect us. So, uh, did… did he already pick a husband for you? Which alliance would be the most beneficial? Dagur would certainly be interested. Or what about Throk? An alliance with the Defenders of the Wing could help boost your credibility as a female leader. I mean, nobody would ever doubt Mala’s ability to lead her people…”
She trailed off, a weird chuckle dropping off her lips even as she had to avert her face so Hiccup wouldn’t notice the shimmer of tears in her eyes. Gods, she couldn’t start crying now. She was strong and independent, a warrior, captain of the Berk Guard. A broken heart wouldn’t throw her off track, it was nothing.
Even though being with Hiccup was all she really wanted…
“Wait, what?” Hiccup’s words broke her out of her spiralling thoughts. She sounded… off. Confused. Lost.
With a sigh, Astrid forced herself to meet Hiccup’s gaze again. “Well, we always knew it would end that way, right? Us, I mean. And… i-it’s okay. I won’t hold it against you. Berk comes first, and it’s your place to lead them. I just…” She let out a hiccupy sigh. “I don’t know, maybe I’ll ask Atali whether I can stay with them for a while, and—”
Astrid gasped when Hiccup reached for her hands again, a strange urgency in that gesture that made her look up again.
“What are you talking about?” Hiccup asked, confused. Her hands were shaking now, too, Astrid noticed. “I… I won’t marry either of them, no matter what Dad wants. I won’t give up on us! He didn’t choose anyone for me, wanted me to choose a partner for myself. And I already have. I—”
She broke off, biting her lip and her shoulders slumping as insecurity overtook her. Astrid had seen this expression so often on her… Out of reflex, her hands squeezed Hiccup; reassuringly. No matter how much her heart was hurting at the prospect of leaving Hiccup, she would always support her.
Hiccup looked up again, the expression in her eyes so pleading and vulnerable that it made Astrid choke. ”Astrid, I… I chose you.”
Astrid’s eyes grew wide. “What?”
Hiccup pulled up her shoulders, her gaze intensifying. “Everything we accomplished over the years, the Edge, the Dragon Hunters, Drago… I couldn’t have done any of that without you. And I thought… well… that it would always be like that. You and me, together. You’re the only person I can imagine spending my life with. So I choose you. If… if you want me?”
For a minute, Astrid could only stare, stunned. Then laughter broke out of her, and she nodded eagerly and stammered, “I… Yes! Yes, of course, I do.”
But no matter how happy Hiccup’s words made her, the feeling only lasted for a brief moment , only until reality caught up with her again. Her shoulders slumped, her smile falling off her face. “But… it’s impossible,” she murmured.
“What?” Oh, Hiccup sounded so hurt.
It tore Astrid’s heart to pieces. Inwardly chastising herself, Astrid pushed her own pain aside, and said, “Oh, Hiccup… I’d love to tie the knot with you and stand by your side, you know that, right? But we can’t do that. Stoick won’t allow it. The traditions and rules are clear.” Her eyes were burning, and she looked away; she didn’t want Hiccup to see how sad she was. “Your father will insist on you marrying a man, someone to forge a political alliance, if possible. And you’d need an heir anyway. I won’t be in your way to fulfil your duty.”
Swallowing, Astrid tried not to think about it. Unlike herself, Hiccup had never been with anyone but her. Hiccup wasn’t even interested in men. The thought of her being forced into a marriage she didn’t want… it wasn’t fair!
“So-so you would reject me? You’d leave?” Hiccup’s voice sounded hollow, forlorn. So small and lost.
Weakly, Astrid nodded, shrugged. “I hope that you’ll be happy. As happy as you can be. But… I don’t think I have the strength to stand by and watch, at least not right away. And… maybe it’ll even help you settle in more easily, if I’m not around to remind you…” She paused, pulling away. “I hope you can forgive me one day, but–”
“No!”
Astrid looked up, scared of what she would see. She’d never wanted to cause Hiccup pain.
But to her relief, there was no pain in her eyes. All she saw there was the typical Haddock stubbornness, mixed with traces of excitement and joy.
“No, ‘but’, Astrid. If this is what you want too, if you’ll accept me… then nothing will come between us.”
“But your father—”
Hiccup shook her head, her long auburn locks flying around, wild and untamed as always. “I won't let him come between us. He likes you, that much I already know. And he told me he’s happy to see me happy with you. So, if he still wants to separate us… then…” She took a deep breath. “Then he’ll have to train another heir.”
Astrid’s eyes widened. “You’d give up your birthright?”
“For you? Yes. I want to lead our people and I’m prepared for this duty. But only on my terms. I’ll do it with you, together. Or not at all.”
Astrid needed a second to let Hiccup’s words sink in. Then she let out a weak laugh and threw herself around her neck, knocking them both down into the grass. They kissed, an overwhelming sense of giddiness making them both giggle against each other’s lips.
When they came up to breathe again, Astrid’d mind was consumed by overwhelming happiness. Never had she even dared to hope for this outcome, but here now they were, and with this new assurance, she wouldn’t let anyone get between them, either.
She noticed that Hiccup’s hands were trembling, though, so Astrid took them in her own. She could sense how agitated she was, and breathed soft and calming kisses onto her knuckles. Sometimes, Hiccup needed a minute to get order into her thoughts.
“What’s up?” she eventually asked, looking up at Hiccup with a reassuring smile.
Hiccup smiled back, though hesitantly, and her hands tightened around Astrid’s. “I was… pretty nervous, to be honest,” she said with a shaky laugh. “I wasn’t sure how you’D react, and… “ She shook her head, but then suddenly became serious. “Astrid… Why did you say that? Earlier, I mean. About how we always knew it would end that way? What was that about?”
Astrid bit her lip and averted her face. After Hiccup’s vehement confession just minutes ago, this felt silly now. With an embarrassed shrug, she said, “It’s… what I thought would happen, what I was prepared for. I love you, Hiccup, you know that, and these past two years with you have only deepened my feelings for you. But… well, I always expected we’d have to part one day, that this happiness I felt with you would only be temporary. That to become Chief, you'd enter a political marriage, or…” She trailed off, shrugging helplessly.
“Oh,” Hiccup said.
She needed a minute to process, time Astrid used to battle down her own worries. She didn’t want for Hiccup to step down, knew how much the people of Berk meant to her. But that she was willing to risk her father’s anger for her meant a lot to Astrid. And maybe it wouldn’t even have to come this far. Maybe they’d be able to convince Stoick…
“So…” Hiccup eventually said. ”Throughout all this time, you thought we’d have to break up, eventually?”
Slowly, Astrid nodded. She looked up, searching for what to say, but never got the chance. From one second to the other, Hiccup was right in front of her, her hands cradling her face and her lips pressed to her own. Astrid gasped, happily surprised. Usually, Hiccup was much more timid, shy even, so her starting anything was rare.
“So that’s why you sometimes acted so reserved,” Hiccup murmured against her lips. “And here I feared you wouldn’t want to stay with me.”
“What? You—”
But Hiccup interrupted her with another kiss. “Doesn’t matter. You spent two years thinking we couldn’t last. That I would leave you at my dad’s command. That I wouldn't do anything to stay with you.” She came closer, one hand caressing along Astrid’s face while the other landed on her waist, holding her in a light embrace. “Astrid, these past two years have been the happiest of my life. I can’t even put into words how much you mean to me, how empty my live would be without you. But while I was happy, you always worried, and I didn’t even notice.”
Astrid wanted to object, to assure her that she’d been happy, too. But before she could get out even one word, Hiccup kissed her again, more energetic than usual, and it left Astrid breathless, happiness fluttering in her chest. Her hands came up to pull Hiccup closer, wandering along her soft curves, exploring her. Hiccup was always shy, hesitant about carrying things further, so it had become their routine that Astrid was the one to take the initiative. But when her hands reached Hiccups breasts, palming them through her tunic and playing with her covered nipples, she shook her head.
“Today is my turn,” she breathed, joy and confidence dancing in her green eyes when they met Astrid’s. “Can I do this for you? Please?”
A little overwhelmed, Astrid nodded. She enjoyed taking the lead in their lovemaking, but seeing Hiccup like this, confident and eager to take over? It was something else. It meant that Hiccup trusted her enough to allow herself to make mistakes, and that was possibly a greater gift than anything else.
They ended up lying in the soft gras, kissing, groping. Astrid revelled in feeling Hiccup’s soft curves beneath her hands and against her own body, the same as it had been yesterday, and yet, everything felt so new. More meaningful. Complete.
Only slowly, they discarded one piece of clothing after the other. There was no hurry in Hiccup’s motions; she thoroughly appreciated every bit of revealed skin with kisses and caresses, leaving Astrid tingling all over. She tried to return the favour, at least a little, but Hiccup was too thorough, too distracting for her to do much but take her attention. Prior to being with Astrid, she didn’t have any experience with sex and intimacy. But she’d always been observant in everything, a quick learner, and this was no different. Hiccup knew which spots on Astrid’s body were sensitive and how to best stimulate them, had memorised her like a map, and it didn’t take much for her to turn her into a helpless and needy mess.
“Hiccup…” she mewled, hardly able to do more than cling to curvy hips or clutch at the grass beneath them.
But there was no reprieve. Hiccup was kneeling across her left leg, the right lifted and loosely wrapped around her waist. She was leaning down to distract Astrid with kisses, hot and open-mouthed, while her hand worked between Astrid’s thighs, slowly buy relentlessly. Long and nimble fingers caressed along her folds and brushed over her clit, making her body tremble with desire.
If Astrid had had the mind for it, she might have regretted teaching Hiccup about teasing and edging, about how to drive her lover insane with building pleasure. But as it was, Astrid’s mind was entirely empty safe for the wonderful, amazing, merciless things Hiccup made her feel. By now, her fingers were inside her, moving in and out in a pace just quick enough to keep her from calming down. She barely managed to open her eyes and look up into beautiful green eyes, Hiccup’s long auburn curls falling around them like a curtain. There was a flash of eager satisfaction in those eyes, a smirk tugging at full lips as she curled her fingers. Her aim was perfect, hitting Astrid’s g-spot and drawing a cry from her lips. Her back arched at the burst of pleasure, but it wasn’t enough to reach her climax, and it soon became clear that Hiccup wasn’t planning to let her soon, either.
Astrid lost all sense of time, writhing and bucking beneath Hiccup’s confident ministrations for what felt like hours. It felt so good to give herself up and into Hiccup’s care. Astrid trusted her with no exceptions, and so she did the only thing she could, took it all until she felt like she would combust any moment now.
“Oh, please,” she whimpered as Hiccup shifted the angle once again, just a tiny bit but it was enough to push her away from that edge once again. “P-please, Hiccup. I…”
She couldn’t even form coherent words anymore, but it seemed to be enough nonetheless, Hiccup sensing that she couldn’t take much more and showing mercy.
“Yes,” Hiccup breathed, her mouth at her ear, lips nipping at sensitive skin. Her movements sped up, fingers thrusting into her and always hitting the mark. Her thumb rubbed at her clit, over and over, until Astrid’s body became rigid, and the waves of pleasure broke above her.
A cry tore itself from Astrid’s throat as she came, back arching and toes curling. Her hands clutched at whatever they could find, and her head rolled uncontrollably from one side to the other, the intensity of her climax almost too much for her to bear. It consumed her, head to toe, a sensation like lightning shooting through her body. It made her arms and legs shake, made colourful lights explode behind her eyes, and made her scream and yell without any filter.
Once it was over, she only slowly found her way back into reality. Around her, the world was spinning and swimming out of focus, her body not fully reacting as it was supposed to.
“That was… oh, wow. Amazing!” she gasped after a minute, still catching her breath. She finally managed to focus her gaze on Hiccup who was leaning over her, with a smug grin on her lips and her eyes beaming.
“Well, I had the best teacher.”
They both laughed, then Hiccup laid down next to her, both entangled in a tight embrace.
“Just give me a few minutes, then I’ll get back to you,” Astrid murmured. She felt heavy, sleepy, but it wouldn’t be fair to leave Hiccup hanging like that.
Hiccup chuckled, but it sounded strained. “No need for that now,” she said, her voice a little tense.
Her arms tightened around Astrid, her finger digging into her arm as if to hold on to her. “First, he should talk to my dad.”
. o O o .
AN: Sooo, that was that. :) Thoughts and comments highly appreciated.

HTTYD: THW SPOILERS AHEAD
Ok so I love this movie and I have so many things to say about it. I’m not a person of many words but I want to talk about is something I’m a huge nerd for. The music. I am such a nerd for the music and honestly I’ve heard the sound track for HTTYD and HTTYD2 so many times it’s crazy. Now I’m not a music expert this is just my take on what I’ve been able to hear.
1- Raiders Return to Busy Busy Berk: I was a little sad (bittersweet) that the movie didn’t immediately start with ‘This is Berk’. Right well, it might’ve not started right away but it’s there. And when you actually hear it it’s so busy, you can only barely hear the original tone which goes beautifully with how busy Berk looks. I thought it was great. Also I enjoyed the usual Hiccup narrative being part of the script now and not just as a third person narration.
2- Legend Has It/ Cliffside Playtime: after the flashback the song that starts when the Hiccup opens up the map is immediately ‘Together We Map the World’ which immediately gave me the again bittersweet feel of seeing Hiccup open a map for his people and dragons and not just for his own enjoyment. Oh baby how he’s grown in just a year. Then Astrid shows up and then when they start playing around (my shipping heart cannot) what plays is a soft version of ‘Romantic Flight’. Just a detail I though it was sweet.
3-Toothless: Smitten: there’s a bit in this song where you can hear ‘Downed Dragon’ which, to me, should’ve been a clue about how the Light Fury (side rant: SHE NEEDS A NAME) was actually shot/ drugged down.
4-New New Tail: as soon as I saw the title of the song I knew I was gonna cry. I was kind of sad the first part of the song (where he’s building the tail) wasn’t the focus of this song but it was so sweet to hear the flight excitement when Hiccup/Toothless fly vs. when Toothless is flying alone.
5- Killer Dragons: I heard in this song a bit of ‘Dragon Battle’ as well as ‘The Dragon Book’ as weird as is sounds but I noticed that usually plays when there’s a new kind of dragon. In this case it was playing when Grimwald and Hiccup were talking about the drugged dragons.
6- With Love Comes a Great Waterfall: one of the things I loved about the HTTYD2 soundtrack was the usage of vocals to create this more of a ~grandeur~ effect. I honestly doubted that John Powell could create an even bigger effect but he managed it so perfectly. To me, it creates this great wow effect that makes me feel so overwhelmed.
7- The Hidden World: one thing I will say, I’m not so satisfied with the Jonsi vocals. But that’s okay because this is something I want to add. The part where Toothless makes his appearance as the mated Alpha the music that plays, the theme to the Hidden World, plays all throughout the soundtrack, more specifically every time the Hidden World is mentioned. Like for example when marriage (refer to point #2) and when the Light Fury comes up the theme plays. This to me was foreshadowing to what was going to happen at the end. And it not just used to show how Toothless moves on to a higher role, but also how Hiccup moves on. Marriage is a way to keep moving forward and that’s why it plays during song #2.
8- Armada Battle: this song was honestly beautiful. The beginning where the music is ‘The Downed Dragon’ and the more hopeful part of ‘Stoick’s Ship’ which is beautiful because it shows both Hiccups’s helplessness and his hope for what is to come, his decision to not allow a bad person to take the dragons away. The throwback to the ‘This is Berk’ where Hiccup sees Astrid in the first movie and how they gave each other the BedroomEyes™ I cried. There was also part of ‘Toothless Lost’ in the part where Valka, Gobber, and Erer show up. Mainly it’s what plays when Hiccup fist sees Valka and yeah it kind of hurt. Also the part where Hiccup goes to save both the Furries is all ‘Kill Ring’ and this one I remember well because of the great music of it. I can’t really see a connection with that one but it’s so obvious it just kinda stuck out to me.
9- As Long As He’s Safe: I was kinda pissed at Hiccup for this part of the movie because how dare you worry me like that you self sacrificing asshole but hearing the last bit of it- ‘Test Drive’ i believe- was heartwarming to see with Hiccup/Light Fury.
10- Once There Were Dragons: this song. Just this song. It’s my favorite of the whole soundtrack. The chorus that starts playing is the same one that has been playing throughout the whole movie (the one I mentioned referring to the future? that one.) you have the buildup to the ceremony with honestly wonderful vocals. Then you have the soft piano to the tune of ‘This is Berk’ from HTTYD when the scene changes to after the time skip. To me this is a way of saying “this is what Berk has become. With her mighty Chief and Cheftess as well as their Heirs.” Then again the theme for Hidden World begins to play when Toothless shows up (AND THE NIGHT LIGHTS I SWEAR TO GOD JUST THE NAME KILLS ME). When the Hiccup and Toothless finally reunite it’s to the tone of the beginning of ‘Forbidden Friendship’ (my all time favorite song of all) and then Zephyr and Nuffink get close to Toothless and that soft part of the song plays and suddenly we’re seeing Hiccup befriend Toothless all over again. Immediately afterwards we have ‘Test Drive’ playing and it’s essentially the best thing in the world. Because it’s nostalgic. Hiccup and Toothless flying together again like they had done for the first time 15 years ago. But now it’s not just them. Now it’s Hiccup and Toothless and Astrid and Stormfly and all their children. And ending it in that same beautiful note from ‘Coming Back Around’ like in the first movie left me so satisfied with the entire trilogy.
Personally, I think John Powell was a genius to incorporate all of these bits and pieces into his final work. The first time I watched the movie, I only heard those throwback bits. The second time around and then listening to the soundtrack, I can hear where there was original work done but also the fluidity that the music has even when incorporating past works. Now I know this is nothing new. In movies, shows, and video games it’s so common to have character themes as well as music for certain locations or groups. But the way John Powell did it was nothing like I had ever heard before. Maybe it’s juat because I hear them so often of because I relate the feelings in the certain scenes to the music but honestly? The music made the movie ~complete~ to me. It added in just enough from mainly the first HTTYD that I’m left feeling the same elation I felt with the first movie as well as the satisfaction or hearing something new.
But like I said I’m no expert and these soundtracks just make me emotional. HTTYD took me an a beautiful journey and ended it in a such I way it’s not an awful heartbreak to say goodbye.

Note
Hi! I loved your leitmotif analysis of HTTYD2 and I wanted to know if you had one similar but for the first movie. I'm making my own color-coded map of all of the themes and mostly I just want to know what the themes should be called, not necessarily every instance of each melody (I'm going to find those myself). It would be helpful if you could answer, but if not, I can analyze the music and then find those instances in the film and name them myself. Thanks!
Hello there! Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed that analysis and it means a lot to me! I will admit that old leitmotif analysis was something I wrote in 2014 when HTTYD 2 had barely entered theatres, I’d only seen the movie once, and thus I based many musical analysis claims on memory. Thus, the analysis is in some ways inaccurate or outdated.
However, I do have a few other analyses in which I’ve gone through some of the other themes, both in the HTTYD and HTTYD 2 expanded scores (not just the officially released soundtracks, since those are incomplete). In those analyses I made near-comprehensive compilations of that theme throughout the movies and discussed what that leitmotif means. I planned to do that with every single motif in HTTYD, and had it all mapped out……… but then tumblr became stricter with audio posting requirements, it didn’t allow me to post any of the music, and that project puttered out unfinished. I know the soundtracks well enough I could probably give you all the instances still, but it would take time I don’t have in life anymore, not to mention it sounds like you’re doing that project yourself anyway. ^.^ It’s interesting to see someone else doing a project that I started but never finished… I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor! That sounds great!
So I’ve made a quick video chatting about the themes as I remember them - that should help you with what to name them. I’ll quickly toss down the relevant links from my previous analyses (My blog’s #music analysis tag might get you a few more link… there’s a reason I tag shit so thoroughly for ya’ll so you can independently find this stuff yourself!), update comments where necessary from outdated posts, give preliminary thoughts on what I feel the remaining themes could mean, and leave you to your project! ^.^ Let me know if you post it anywhere because I’d be interested to check it out!

[Me playing “For the Dancing and the Dreaming” is here]
And uh, if you quote or cite or take any ideas from me, please give the credit and link to me where it’s due! Perfunctory and rushed as this admittedly is, this still took lots of work! Thanks!
How to Train Your Dragon’s Leitmotifs
Alpha theme
Tumblr media
Prime example: Two New Alphas 2:56-3:52
This grand theme is about the great dragon leadership position: the alpha. It is first applied to Valka’s Bewilderbeast… but in the end of HTTYD 2, to the new alpha Toothless.
Astrid’s theme: [1] [2]
Tumblr media
Prime example: Romantic Flight 0:00+
This theme is often called by fans as “The Romantic Flight” theme. While there is a romantic element attached to this theme and it occasionally manifests in that connotation apart from Astrid, this theme is focused less on romance and more specifically on Astrid herself.
Berk theme
Tumblr media
Prime example: This is Berk 0:24-0:41
The theme most closely associated with Berk and the identity of the island itself. For instance, it’s always played at the start of HTTYD when Berk is being introduced/reintroduced. It’s paired with a sense of high-strung adventure, such as we hear in “Astrid Goes for a Spin.”
Berk at peace
Tumblr media
Take the title of this theme especially with a grain of salt. My impression is that it’s a theme which is played in relatively calm, peaceful, or day-to-day moments. It’s Berk at peace, it’s characters having casual interactions. That’s what I recall, but I could be wrong.
Dragon protector / Toothless’ theme (HTTYD 2) [1] [2] [3]
Prime example: Flying with Mother 0:25-0:44
I’ve talked about this theme a lot, down to analyzing Flying With Mother as its own separate track. This is the theme of the protector of dragons - it’s what I called The Vigilante’s Theme at one point before I realized John Powell said he wrote a theme specifically for Toothless in HTTYD 2. This is the central theme of HTTYD 2 and it’s a theme that Toothless grows into. By the end of the movie, Toothless is able to adopt this melody as a dragon who protects all.
Drago’s theme
Tumblr media
Prime example: Meet Drago 0:08-0:31
This menacing theme is about Drago and the threat Drago’s army possesses over the Barbaric Archipelago and dragonkind.
Hiccup’s relationship with Toothless
Tumblr media
Prime example: Test Drive 0:22-0:39
This theme focuses on Hiccup and his interactions with Toothless. The music highlights how his opinions of Toothless (and more broadly, all of dragons) change - from something mysterious and feared, to something powerful, bold, and beautiful. In the end it becomes an anthem for how How to Train Your Dragon is a story of… well… flying on dragons!
Progress theme
Prime Example: New Tail 0:00-0:44
Not going to lie, I’m actually just sort of making an uneducated stabbing at this theme. I’d need to rewatch the movie and think about it more. This is more or less a placeholder name. But you never know. I could be right?
Stalka theme
Tumblr media
Prime example: For the Dancing and the Dreaming
It’s For the Dancing and the Dreaming, essentially. This is the anthem of Stoick and Valka’s love for one another.
Toothless’ theme(?) (HTTYD)
Tumblr media
Prime example: Test Drive 0:00-0:22
I’ve called this the “Toothless in Trouble” theme in the past, like in that analysis you read from 2014. And it’s true we hear very specifically quoted when Toothless is in danger - for instance, in “Downed Dragon” 3:10-3:36. However, that’s actually just part of what the theme is for, because we also hear the theme in instances like the start of “Test Drive” - which is obviously not Toothless in danger. It’s also the prominent theme that plays when Toothless stares Hiccup eye-to-eye shortly after Hiccup has freed the dragon from his bonds in the woods.
Please, please, please take my comment here with a grain of salt, as I haven’t thought about this leitmotif in depth, but it could very likely be the case that this is Toothless’ general theme in the first movie. Given as it’s played when Toothless is in danger, and played when Toothless is being ridden in “Test Drive,” it could just be the dragon’s theme. In which case… you could talk about some cool motif melding, where the Berk theme and Toothless’ become played well together. Like that doesn’t say something about the melding state of this island’s civilization! But PLEASE take my idea with a grain of salt… it’s a preliminary thought of what this theme means in full.
Undeveloped as a boy

How to Train Your Dragon 2 focuses much on Hiccup’s sense of identity. At the start of the movie, he is unsure of himself. This here is a theme that demonstrates his lack of understanding in himself. It’s a wandering theme, just as Hiccup’s heart is a wandering heart. He travels the world because he feels unsettled inside of him about what his identity is. It’s to note that the last time we hear this theme play is when Stoick dies. Once Stoick dies, Hiccup can no longer question what his identity is, what his role is to Berk. He has to step into the role of chief. That is now his place and he is no longer an uncertain boy.
Interestingly, you’ll notice that what I’ve called Eret’s theme in the past is actually just a specific way of expressing this theme. It’s played in a very gallant and bold flavor which is why I initially mistakenly separated it off into its own theme.
War theme
Tumblr media
Prime example: Ready the Ships 0:00-0:15
A theme focused on when the Vikings are at war or preparing for war, especially war against the dragons. Usually this theme is played in a heavy, dark matter. What’s interesting is we also hear a rather meandering, good-natured version of this theme even when Hiccup is wandering Berk’s forests attempting to find Toothless… so he can kill the dragon.
These aren’t all the melodies in HTTYD but these are most of the main and meaningful ones.

Coheed & Cambria: Vaxis Act 1 - The Unheavenly Creatures
Tumblr media
“Welcome Home...”
The Second Stage Turbine Blade, In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3, Good Apollo I’m Burning Star IV: From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness; these 3 albums, while being a mouthful, ultimately defined in my opinion at the time what a perfect rock band should sound like. ‘In the pocket’ instrumentation, lyrics that grab your attention and keep it there song after song, and a voice that is powerful, yet distinctive to tie it all together and bring to the table something that other bands that have been categorized with Coheed and Cambria just don’t have. Context has always been the defining feature that this quartet hailing from Nyack, New York possesses, and what ultimately gives them their own specific watermark in the era of today’s convoluted smorgasbord that is modern rock music. That’s not to say that the group didn’t have it’s fair share of less than stellar moments. When the 4th record in the band’s discography dropped titled No World For Tomorrow, like many I felt that they could clearly do no wrong, as the album had practically all of the elements that the previous releases presented, and even more in some instances. As cliche’ as it might sound, the band just had some kind of magical quality to their music. It was a perfectly calculated mix of prog rock, experimental, pop and emo rock crafted in such a precise way that every note from the instruments at play gave life to each story that stemmed from which track was playing. However, that feeling started to fall short when the band decided to write their next few albums in a direction that didn’t pertain at all to the saga that had been told through song so well. That’s not to say Claudio Sanchez dropped the ball on his genius songwriting and story telling, the thing is that it was then when my interest sadly started to fade for the band’s music, not to mention I was at the time both listening to and appreciating so many new artists in such a short period of time. It wasn’t until the day I saw the band live at the Greek Theatre in Berkely alongside Taking Back Sunday and The Story So Far that I started to have faith in their upcoming release, with the band blowing my mind as they opened their set with “The Dark Sentencer”. Coheed is back, and oh how I’ve missed them.
The thing about this album that intrigues me the most is how it incorporates several qualities, if not straight similarities from the band’s previous albums, but not in a way that makes it sound repetitive, or recycled in any sense. This is an impressive feat for any band or artist, especially those with a hefty discography under their belt. The Prologue sets the tone for the newest signature theme that will ultimately ring throughout your listening of the album’s entirety. It’s vintage piano keyed quality is a love letter to the Second Stage era, while The Dark Sentencer easily takes it’s place as the albums “In Keeping Secrets”, as the immersiveness of it’s epic soundscape effortlessly hits over the seven minute mark, which in turn makes it the longest song on the album. The dual guitar work of both Claudio and Travis take the main stage here, just as they did on IKSSE, with the notes harmonizing in such an aggresively, yet beautiful manner. Claudio doesn’t slack on his vocal prowess either, proving that he can carry the band’s sound just as easily. The album’s title track Unheavenly Creatures is a tasty, single worthy tune that will undoubtedly embed it’s catchiness into your brain with one of the most infectious choruses that the band has had to offer since the Good Apollo days. Hell, i’d even be just as daring to say that it comes close to rivaling classics such as Blood Red Summer or A Favor House Atlantic, in terms of how well the band knows how to craft songs that will get you singing along so willingly. Tracks like Black Sunday and Queen of the Dark paint quite a bleak picture, giving the album a colorful shift in direction than what it originally started in. The track True Ugly, drummer Josh Eppard’s favorite off of the album chugs the pace back up to speed with it’s relentless tempo and epic chorus, filled with soaring vocals and gargantuan musicianship. Love Protocol keeps that train going with a similar formula, however still being a great track overall. The Pavilion (A Long Way Back), while not being breathtaking, goes back to a more pleasantly sounding manner, similar to what the 3rd track, Toys portrayed. The Gutter proves to be another one of the albums strong standouts, with engaging verses that lead to an anthemic chorus, showcasing some of the album’s best moments in my opinion. As the album nears it’s end, the tracks All On Fire and It Walks Among Us don’t necessarily stand out in any particular way in favor of paving the way for the record’s last real amazing moment that is Old Flames. This track plays it’s part as the perfect way to summarize the endearing, yet lengthy journey of an album, with the beautiful acoustic ballad, Lucky Stars being the last page as the book of Vaxis Part one finally comes to an end. Unheavenly Creatures, with repeated listens ultimately became the album that I wanted from the band. It is undoubtedly a return to form, but with a fresh, new taste of what is to come from the legendary couple who’s tragic fates were both integral to what this extensive saga continues to grow into, and what it will eventually become.

7 for the prompt ask! ;) Thanks, Purps!
7. “Well, that’s tragic.”
Thanks for the ask! I’ve wanted to do a drabble where Hiccup was just more seriously starting his cartography career, and this seemed to fit. Hope you enjoy!
                                                      Fast Learner
“How’s that coming along?” Astrid asked, making her way over from Stormfly to where Hiccup sat on the ground, bent intently over his map.
Hiccup acknowledged her with a friendly grunt as she plopped down beside him, but didn’t remove his eyes from his work. Astrid cleared her throat, but he still didn’t look up.
She smirked, and said, “Having fun there?”
Shaking his head, Hiccup looked up, meeting her eyes. “On the contrary, m’lady. This map just isn’t big enough for all that I want to put down. I’ve tried to expand it, but…” He gestured to the flimsy map spread out on the grass. “It just never works out.”
Astrid sighed dramatically, leaning into him. “Well, that’s tragic!”
Hiccup raised his brow. “Clearly, you don’t understand the beauty of cartography.”
“No. I guess I don’t.” She sat upwards, looking out into the place Hiccup was trying to draw.
Instantly, her breath was stolen from her. A small line of islands led out like stepping stones into the sea, their green trees and vibrant grasses glowing brightly in the sunlight. The blue sea around them complimented the picturesque theme, and she turned to Hiccup, curious. “You want to map all of that?”
Hiccup grunted, already leaning back over the map and scribbling on the very top corner of it. It seemed that almost immediately he ran out of room and, furiously, he threw his piece of charcoal away. “That’s it! I’m done!”
Astrid laughed, giving him a small kiss on the cheek. “Come on, babe. I have an idea.”
Tearing off a patch of her blue skirt, she looked over it with inspective eyes before handing it to Hiccup. “Use this.” When he hesitated, she nodded in encouragement. “Go on. It’ll give you more room.”
Hiccup tenderly took the fabric, and then looking behind his shoulder, he called, “Toothless!”
The excited Night Fury, who had previously been playing with Stormfly, bounded over, and when Hiccup held up the strip of cloth, he instantly ran his wet tongue all over it. At Astrid’s disgusted look, Hiccup shrugged. “Night Fury saliva has its uses.”
“Some uses in which I’d prefer not to see.”
“Remember, m’lady, you’re the one who gave me the fabric in the first place.”
She punched him. “And don’t you forget it.”
Hiccup pressed the piece of cloth at the upper right corner of the map, where it stuck with a small smack to the rest of the fabric. He examined it thoughtfully, only pulling back when he was satisfied with how it looked . “Perfect fit.”
Astrid nudged him. “See? Looks like you should listen to me more often. Especially when it comes to your maps and your drawings.”
Hiccup raised his brow. “You want to try cartography?”
After a beat, Astrid nodded. “Sure.” She shrugged. “How hard can it be? I’ve seen you do it before.”
“In that case, I trust you’ll do perfectly well, m’lady.” Hiccup handed her the charcoal, then scooted back a little and watched her with an amused gaze.
Rolling her eyes, Astrid bent over the map and startled to scratch the charcoal over the new blue patch that was connected to it. To her chagrin, her drawing ended up sloppy and smudged, not at all how she expected it to be.
With a shake of her head, Astrid sat all the way up. “Honestly… I don’t know how you do it, Hiccup.”
“I was hoping you’d say that,” he said, grinning slyly. When Astrid handed it over, he took the charcoal and gripped it firmly. “It takes a strong but guiding hand to get the effect you want. Like this.” He pressed down on top of Astrid’s blurred lines, instantly making one of them more prominent than before.
Astrid’s hand found its way on top of Hiccup’s. “Like this?” She moved the charcoal across another line, proud with the dark black streak that appeared when she was done.
Hiccup smiled. “Yes. Exactly like that. You’re a fast learner.”
“As always.” She looked down at the map again. “You know, you could let me take over sometimes. If you wanted to, that is. I kind of like it. It’s… interesting.”
Releasing his hand, Hiccup gave a slow nod. “All right. Give it a try, m’lady. Who knows?” He inched closer to her playfully. “You may just be doing all my maps for me in the future.”
Astrid shot him a black look. “Don’t get your hopes up too far, dragon boy.” She paused thoughtfully, tapping her chin. “Or should I call you map boy…?”
Hiccup groaned, instantly protesting about how childish ‘map boy’ sounded and how he’d be teased relentlessly on Berk if anyone ever caught wind of the new nickname.
“All right, all right,” Astrid laughed, shaking her head. “I won’t tell anyone.”
Hiccup crossed his arms. “Good.”
But the truth, was… well…
He kind of liked it.

M*A*S*H: 10 Hilarious Memes Only True Fans Will Understand – Screen Rant
Despite being over 40 years old, M*A*S*H is still considered to be one of most popular television shows out there.  With memorable characters and surprisingly serious moments amidst the comedy. Though the comedic elements weren’t always great by today’s standards, it was a unique show that hasn’t truly been replicated since.
RELATED: 10 Quotes from M*A*S*H That Are Still Hilarious Today
One particular sign of this show’s timelessness is the fact that there are memes based on the show.  While most of them are geared toward fans of show, who either grew up with it or saw reruns on MeTV, they will certainly find these memes hilarious.

10 Checked By Radar
At a glance, what the road-sign in this meme claims sounds ridiculous and even creepy.  But it’s made funny by the superimposed presence of Corporal “Radar” O’Reilly from M*A*S*H peeking out from behind the bushes near the road, making a pun out of the sign as a result.  Though in reality, speed checks using radar scans aren’t entirely far-fetched.
According to Mental Floss, police officers will fly over stretches of highway in small aircraft and either “Use VASCAR systems” which are basically radar guns or stopwatches to clock a vehicle’s speed before radioing a ground officer to pull the vehicle over if it goes over the speed limit.  Nevertheless, that hasn’t stopped the Internet from turning this concept into a hilarious meme.
9 Trying To Sleep
Being the company clerk for the fictional 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital stationed in South Korea during the Korean War, Radar had to keep track of a lot of things (which is another reason why the previous meme is funny).  So naturally, he got easily worried and because he wasn’t the most self-confident character in the cast of M*A*S*H that made him susceptible to suggestions from more charismatic characters like Captain “Hawkeye” Pierce.
RELATED: 10 Jokes From M*A*S*H That Have Already Aged Poorly
Hence, this meme is appropriately funny by having Radar personify a person trying to go to bed while Hawkeye is whispering something to him as the personification of the person’s inner fears about how everything can possibly go wrong.  It’s not only fitting of their characters but their facial expressions fit the meme’s subtitles quite well.

8 Closed The Garage
In keeping with the theme of hilariously appropriate facial expressions, we’ve got Major Margaret Houlihan making this face which can only be described as being mildly confused yet clearly preoccupied about something.  Hence, we have a tagline that seems like the most specific yet relatable scenario that would lead her to make this kind of expression thus making it funny.
Then like the previous meme, this one also fits Margaret’s character as she was arguably one of the most well-organized officers in M*A*S*H.  This is despite the fact that she was constantly flirted with by the guys and actively had an affair with a married man.
7 Let’s See
Aside from his charisma and tendency to make witty remarks, Hawkeye didn’t usually play by the rules at the 4077th MASH camp.  In fact, he was even downright lazy at times as his facial expression in this meme indicates.
RELATED: M*A*S*H: 6 Best Friendships (& 4 Worst)
This notion is further assisted by the meme’s funny tagline which lists various chores that have to be done with an abrupt stop by the ‘Or’ part of the sentence.  While it’s not explicitly implied what’s going to happen instead, it probably has to do with drinking since we see Hawkeye holding a full martini glass which makes sense as he had alcoholic tendencies in M*A*S*H.

6 Surgery Is Finally Over
Since Hawkeye was the 4077th MASH camp’s chief surgeon, he was almost always involved in most of the surgeries that happened when wounded and/or dying soldiers were flown in.  Because surgery is an intensive and delicate process, it’s not only stressful but also exhausting.
So the joke in this M*A*S*H meme is that after Hawkeye performs surgery, he falls into a deep sleep.  Then what makes the meme funnier is that the person featured in this meme is “Dan” Avidan from the two-man music group Ninja Sex Party and the increasingly popular YouTube video gaming channel Game Grumps, who was either sleepy or on the verge of sleep in several videos of Game Grumps.
5 Reposting
By its definition, a meme is an image that is repeated over and over again regardless of its original context.  However, in an age where people’s attention spans are growing increasingly shorter a meme can become ‘old’ by Internet standards pretty quickly.
RELATED: M*A*S*H: The 10 Saddest Moments, Ranked
That concept in turn serves as the basis for the humor in this meme, which uses a notably hilarious still-frame from the third season M*A*S*H episode “Adam’s Ribs”.  In it, Hawkeye gets fed up with the food served at the camp and starts chanting “We want something else!” making it the perfect metaphor for this meme’s tagline about what it feels like to see the same thing reposted multiple times.

4 Beaver Biscuits
Though Hawkeye was known to make sarcastic remarks that ultimately came off as hilariously witty in relation to the situation at hand, Colonel Sherman T. Potter often made exclamations that were funny in of themselves.  An example is the one this meme uses, which sounds so strange on its own that it becomes funny in combination with Potter’s angry face.
Of course, this was just one of many hilarious exclamations that Potter used in duration of his time on M*A*S*H.  After he replaced Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake as the 4077th MASH camp’s commanding officer, he quickly became one of the most popular characters on the show and his strangely funny exclamations may have had something to do with it.
3 I Am Hawkeye
Because Hawkeye is such a distinct name, it’s hard to forget.  Yet who people associate it with has changed across several generations, as various characters in movies and TV shows of varying genres have been called Hawkeye.  This meme highlights a few examples with Hawkeye from the 1992 remake of The Last of the Mohicans at the top, followed by the superhero Hawkeye from The Avengers, and then ending at Hawkeye from M*A*S*H.
RELATED: 10 Things That Make No Sense About M*A*S*H
The main humor of this meme comes from the subtitles, as each guy claims to be the ‘true’ Hawkeye with M*A*S*H’s Hawkeye pointing at himself and implying he’s the one the others got their name from.  While this is true time-wise as M*A*S*H predates The Last of the Mohicans 1992 movie, let alone The Avengers, the book The Last of the Mohicans was based on was written in the 1800s making its protagonist Hawkeye technically older than the others.  Still, this meme is funny for its references and truthfulness to an extent.
advertising
2 Ermahgerd
One of the Internet’s most popular memes, “Ermahgerd” is an exaggerated misspelling of the phrase “Oh my god” to coincide with the girl in the photo’s excited expression which is so cringe-worthy that it’s funny to look at.  Now in the original meme, the girl was holding up books from the horror series Goosebumps with the tagline “Gersberms / Mah fravrit berks” according to Know Your Meme.
In this meme, though, the book covers have been replaced with M*A*S*H DVD covers.  Yet the effect is the same as this meme’s tagline has the same exaggerated misspelled words as the original meme, and the girl’s face makes it all the more funny.
1 Scared, Potter?
Much like Hawkeye, the name Potter has changed in terms of association with different fictional characters among various generations of people.  While most people today associate it with the titular protagonist in the Harry Potter franchise, Sherman T. Potter from M*A*S*H predates the former by at least two decades.
So the humor of the above meme comes from mixing the association of these two different characters by having a still-frame of the Dueling Club scene from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets intercut by M*A*S*H’s Potter making one of his weirdly funny exclamations.  This in turn makes it hilarious for older and younger generations of M*A*S*H fans.
