Moxie was waiting for me right outside the police station. She looked cross. She'd even put down her typewriter, right by the door of the library, so she could cross her arms. She did it crossly.

she looked displeased at having her photograph taken, and also like she used her displeased expression quite frequently. printed underneath the frowning girl was her name, ᴍɪss ᴄʟᴇᴏ ᴋɴɪɢʜᴛ, and at the top of the poster was printed another word, in much bigger type. it was the same word i had read on the copies of the same flyer all over town. ᴍɪssɪɴɢ.

edits for fics i might or might not write: hold on tight
“Have you ever ridden a motorcycle before?” Filene N. Gottlin asked skeptically. Kit was sure that’s not her real name, but it didn’t matter now.
She had, on the backseat with her mother in front, but Kit thought it counted. “Of course,” she took over the key briskly. She climbed onto the motorcycle and started it up, Filene following her lead.
After a moment of hesitance, Filene wrapped her arms around Kit’s waist, and Kit stilled for a moment trying to decipher the soft feeling of those arms on her. She swallowed, suddenly nervous, not really about the motorcycle.
“Hold on tight,” Kit said.

“The world is swirling with so many mysteries and secrets that nobody will ever track down all of them. But with a book you can stay up very late, reading until all the secrets are clear to you. The questions of the world are hidden forever, but the answers in a book are hiding in plain sight.”

“The News,” I repeated. “What’s the news, Moxie?”
“That’s what I’m trying to find out,” she replied, and typed a few more words.

“Why are you crying?” Violet asked. “Why are you so distraught?”
“Because all will not go well,” Kit said finally. “You may as well know that now, Baudelaires. These are dark days, as dark as a crow flying through a pitch black night. Our errands may be noble, but we will not succeed. I suspect that before Thursday, I'll see your signal and know that all our hopes have gone up in smoke.”
