The fact that August ends up being the one carrying the bag here and not Wille just like he ends up being the one carrying the weight/title of crown prince instead of Wille.

Once again sitting here thinking about how, for all the remorse August felt about the video, for how shitty of a person he felt like he was for posting it, for all his efforts (however subpar they were) to try and apologize to Wille about it...Simon never got a fucking apology.
Which makes sense, and shows how, at August's core, he's still an elitist, superior prick, even if he's more cognizant of his flaws and more uncomfortable with them than he's ever been. He could not be bothered to apologize Simon, doesn't even have the thought cross his mind—why? Because Simon's a nobody. Simon has no power. Like, let's be clear, August has fucked up his life irreparably. There is literally no future where the video will not haunt Simon. (I read a great fanfiction I have to find the link for, where Simon says that he was fucked the minute August hit "post," no matter what Wille said or did, and like...yeah.) That shit was all over the news in Sweden. We see, already, people recognizing him out in public. Beyond even just the emotional turmoil that comes with that video existing, we see, through the posting of his address and the rock through the window, that its existence physically endangers Simon. Even if Simon were to leave the country, move somewhere new and try to start over, it would take one google search of his name to uncover that blight on his life.
That's not to say that Simon couldn't process its existence emotionally, or that he won't be able to lead a happy, fulfilling life with the video existing, because he absolutely can and will! It just incenses me that not once in August's journey of feeling this guilt and shame over the video, and reaching some sort of understanding and peace with Wille, does he once consider giving Simon any sort of apology. (The settlement doesn't count, of course.) It makes sense for his character, and Simon probably wouldn't have accepted the apology, and by no means should be expected to, but the fact that he didn't get one still makes me so angry.

Absolutely love that August now has to live with the consequences of his actions. He was the one that posted the video and everything that happened after was his fault and not Wille’s like the other students were pointing out.
It’s actually more than fair that he gets to be in the “prision” that is the Court and Wille gets to be free with the person he loves.

felice and wilhelm’s friendship is probably one of the best things to ever exist. felice is always there for wille if he needs to talk and he feels comfortable enough to talk to her about his problems. for the next season, i hope that wille is there for felice to discuss any of her problems.

misconceptions about yr characters that i have come across, that really piss me off
the fact some believe that simon essentially forced wille to pick between coming out and dating him. THAT WAS NOT THE ENTIRE CASE OMG. the problem wasnt that wille denied it was him, simon totally understood that even if he wasnt exactly happy with their situation, he knew about who wilhelm was from the beginning and what that entailed. it was the fact that wille essentially promised simon that he would do what was best for them and actually hopefully come out, but then denied any and all involvement with simon, even friendly without a semblance of keeping him in the loop. it was that which created the gaping chasm of broken trust and uncertainty between them. simon NEVER forced wille to come out, it was always going to be on wille's terms.
i saw a post that suggested that sara was the one being a dick at marieberg rather than the one being bullied. and oohhhh boy let me tell you how fucking mad it made me. look im not going to infantilize her and brush off all her mistakes with the dumb reasoning of "oh she's neurodivergent." no, i wont be doing that. like any other character she too has nuance and a lot of depth and its always the one dimensional "analyses" that make me want to scream (derogatory). so coming back to my point. seeing people just blatantly call her manipulative and unforgivable without realising how conflicted her character is just sooo ughhh. (i realise that im not really versed in the intricacies of how her character essentially feels and im always open to criticism and adept analyses of any and all characters :3)
posts were people essentially hold simon and/or sara's mistakes to the same level as the CRIMES that august has committed and its just????? what in the even???? like- as i said, not ignoring the nuance here, but literally NOTHING can justify august's actions. he was always going to use that video with malicious intent. it was never going to be some oops teenage boy did a smth stupid when he literally recorded an intimate video of two minors. nothing can morally or legally (ig) defend that-
apologies if this comes off as like insanely aggressive and incoherent or smth bc this is more or less a vent post fhjsghsjgsg :'))
ANYWAYS yeah

finally got around to watching young royals season 3 and i have many many thoughts but mostly im just so happy w how they handled august???
like first off, they held off his apology scene until we were at a point narratively where it is very clear that he is very sincere in his remorse. but then they don't make wilhelm accept the apology. yes the apology is earnest and well meant and good, and yes we genuinely believe that he is going to be better, but wille still doesn't owe it to him to say it's okay and it's so important.
but then the most important part of the whole thing was the scene where nils came out to him and vincent. because in that moment, he realizes that yes, he completely and irreversibly fucked up with wille and simon and maybe he will never fully be able to right that wrong, but at least he can do better this time. at least he can learn and grow and never make that fucking mistake again. and no, it doesn't at all reverse the terrible things he's done, but goddammit he's changing.
and that's what makes it satisfying instead of infuriating when (spoilers) wilhelm abdicates and august becomes next in line. a season ago, august becoming king would be literally worst case scenario and therefore while we all wanted wille to abdicate, it would've still made for a shit ending. but i feel like they really put in the work this season to allow august to really earn our respect and feel like he could deserve that fate.
and it makes a point of emphasizing that he doesn't end up with everything. the narrative doesn't cruelly punish him but this story also does not shy away from the consequences of his actions. he fucked things up with sara, for example, and it made it clear that that was a permanent decision. but he still has a path forward and he still has hope which is so refreshing to see from such a troubled character
in conclusion, it's really hard to handle making shitty characters sympathetic in a world with zero media literacy, but what they did with august this season was just the right amount of nuance to make for honestly one of the most interesting characters in the show.
anyways sorry for the fucking essay i'd be surprised if ANYONE read all that

I think the most despicable thing I realised about August is the fact that when he tries to “apologise” to Wilhelm and says,
Tumblr media
[“I understand that what I did to you is unforgivable”]
— he doesn’t actually mean he knows what he did was morally wrong. He means that he knows what he did broke rules, defamed the Royal court, ruined his friendship with Wilhelm, the Crown Prince.
We see where August’s values lie when he shares exactly what he took out of the situation, which was,
Tumblr media
[“I have accepted that you will hate me for the rest of your life”]
He understands ethically that what he did was illegal, and that there are serious consequences to it, but the extent of his shame and guilt only goes as far as its impacts on the Royal Court and his standing with the Royal Family. He thinks Wilhelm just hates him for posting the video, rather than hating him for all the flow on effects that it has caused, such as Wilhelm being forced to lie, his break up with Simon, his fallout with his parents, the lack of trust he has for everything August represents at the school, the loneliness of feeling completely abandoned by everything and everyone that was supposed to protect and support him.
And there is an element of lack of awareness on August’s part to a degree, but we clearly see that he doesn’t actually feel bad about how it has personally impacted Wilhelm. And given how he’s so quick to jump to blackmail, threats and scapegoats, he clearly does not care, either.

I just rewatched the scene in season one where August comes to Wille’s room shortly after the video was posted (but before Wille knew it was August). Wille asks him what Erik would have done, and August says something like “he would’ve wanted you to be yourself.” and “Follow your heart.”
It is absolutely motivated by guilt on August’s part, but he also seemed so awkward about the whole thing. & knowing what I now know about Erik being involved with the super messed up initiations of August and Nils (and the other 3rd yr boys), I also think that August had more complicated feelings about both the video and how badly Wille wanted Erik’s comfort.
Idk, am I thinking about this too hard? A lot of August’s scenes from s1 (and even s2) seem more complex than before now. August is still a bad person, but knowing his background makes me feel a little sad for him too. I wish I knew more about the whole thing.

just finished young royals and i honestly thought that wilhelm and simon were gonna get a bad ending until the last ten minutes of the final episode and im so glad that they ended the way they did. the four of them are gonna be so happy together
i am a little disappointed that august’s eating disorder and his body dysmorphia wasn’t looked into more than it was. would’ve been nice to see him get some help in the end because it seemed like a massive part of his character that just wasn’t delved into on screen. i’m also kind of curious to see what sort of king he would make, especially without sara’s guidance
