If Izzy could see Auntie's methodically plotted out ship board and see her filing system, I think she'd become his platonic soul mate.

Another fab thing about season 2: the moment I realized the Olu/Zheng/Auntie thread was a gentler mirror to Stede/Ed/Izzy's conflict. It was the baggage and nature of the latter relationships boiled down to their barest, simplest form. When you look at the story with O/Z/A, you can see what Ed and Izzy might have been similar to once upon a time, before Izzy became utterly toxic and controlling, and before Ed's mental illness had gotten so bad he was too exhausted and embittered to try anymore with Izzy. And you can see what Zheng and Auntie avoid becoming with Olu's gentle, clearsighted style of help. Stede eventually gets there in season 2, where he can see how all the gears are turning for both Ed and Izzy and take steps to try and make things less antagonistic.
It's the same kind of relationship and the same kind of conflict, but at different points in the respective stories. One is what the other used to be, and one is what the other avoids becoming.

You’re surrounded by family
Better quality details under the cut because you can’t even see all my favorite bits like the sign on the inn that says “Izzy’s” 🥲 image compression on this website is!!! Yikes.
Anyway this is what season 3 will be like David Jenkins told me personally. The found family can be a chill little crew at their dads’ place, as a treat🫡

Yeah, I was glad Auntie survived, but you could've made it make sense and actually make it character-driven and it would've been so easy.
I think she should've (would've) thrown the clock overboard, because it was pissing her the fuck off. That would've been a great, in-character and perfectly reasonable way to have her survive the explosions, instead of what. Plot armor?

There's something about season two that I've wanted to talk about, but I've been struggling to find a way to word. But I'm just going for it
In season two of Our Flag Means Death, they introduce six new female characters (Zheng, Archie, Mary Reed, Anne Bonney, Auntie, and Hellcat Mary). I think this is absolutely fantastic since season one had very few female characters (the only notable ones that come to mind are Mary Bonnet, Jim's nana, and Spanish Jackie). So I'm really, really glad new characters are being introduced! That's great! And I actually adore all the new female characters we get!
It's just very odd to me that out of six new characters, four of their main focuses are about being in a romantic relationship and one of the remaining two is mainly a mother figure.
I dunno! I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, it's just odd and it's something I picked up on. Anne and Mary are both extremely sexual (not inherently a bad thing) and are meant to kinda just parallel Stede and Ed and then never appear again. Zheng is a ruthless pirate queen (who I absolutely adore, by the way) but her motivation mostly surrounds her crush on Oluwande. I think there's genuine potential in a character who is tough and manipulative to gain an advantage where she needs to, but finds herself falling in love with a softie, but that's most of what we get with Zheng and we don't actually SEE her enough to understand her as a character beyond that and her auntie issues. Archie is a fantastic character, but we really only see her interact with Jim and Oluwande.
I don't think it's bad to give female characters romance arcs! I actually love pretty much all of the romantic relationships they end up in. It's just... odd to me that that's most of what we get. I dunno, I was mostly wondering if anyone else noticed that too
