There's something about season two that I've wanted to talk about, but I've been struggling to find a way to word. But I'm just going for it

In season two of Our Flag Means Death, they introduce six new female characters (Zheng, Archie, Mary Reed, Anne Bonney, Auntie, and Hellcat Mary). I think this is absolutely fantastic since season one had very few female characters (the only notable ones that come to mind are Mary Bonnet, Jim's nana, and Spanish Jackie). So I'm really, really glad new characters are being introduced! That's great! And I actually adore all the new female characters we get!

It's just very odd to me that out of six new characters, four of their main focuses are about being in a romantic relationship and one of the remaining two is mainly a mother figure.

I dunno! I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, it's just odd and it's something I picked up on. Anne and Mary are both extremely sexual (not inherently a bad thing) and are meant to kinda just parallel Stede and Ed and then never appear again. Zheng is a ruthless pirate queen (who I absolutely adore, by the way) but her motivation mostly surrounds her crush on Oluwande. I think there's genuine potential in a character who is tough and manipulative to gain an advantage where she needs to, but finds herself falling in love with a softie, but that's most of what we get with Zheng and we don't actually SEE her enough to understand her as a character beyond that and her auntie issues. Archie is a fantastic character, but we really only see her interact with Jim and Oluwande.

I don't think it's bad to give female characters romance arcs! I actually love pretty much all of the romantic relationships they end up in. It's just... odd to me that that's most of what we get. I dunno, I was mostly wondering if anyone else noticed that too

Contemporary fiction and rumours are still part of history tho. Were the actual historical figures Bonny and Reed lovers? No idea. Is them falling in love part of pirate mythology that dates back to 18th century sources? Yes.

My only complaint about OFMD season two is that Anne Bonny and Mary Reed did not get enough screen time like have such a cool history so I wish they were utilized more, they could have formed a pirate queen group with Zheng or showed up during the finale. But never the less great show
