Avania Mail General Update
Hello everyone! As I mentioned in my Post-Chapter 16 Status Update (which I would highly recommend reading if you haven’t already), I have quite the backlog of Avania Mail questions waiting to be answered...
Firstly, thank you to everyone for taking an interest in Avania and sending in your questions! It means a lot to me, and making Avania Mail replies is not only a lot of fun, but is often quite helpful in expanding and/or fleshing out the characters and world of Avania.
Unfortunately though, it hasn’t been feasible for me to reply to mail at the same rate at which I receive it (an understatement, I know), and given the recent changes in my life allowing me less free time of any kind, this situation will inevitably persist for the time being...
So, in light of that, I have taken stock of every outstanding question currently residing in the Avania Mail inbox and organized them into a comprehensive list. To try and ensure all submitters get a shot at having at least one of their questions answered in as timely a fashion as possible, I have always tended to skip around to questions from different users (or anons) while still generally working from oldest to newest. I will continue to operate in this way, but I am now consolidating all questions from each non-anon submitter and will simply pick the questions I feel I can answer most readily.
Some questions I have to think about for a while, others I have an answer in mind, but it would require more drawing to do justice, so it gets put off until I’m in a good place to devote time to it (usually between finishing comic pages). Others are simple enough to answer quickly and with minimal new drawing, while hopefully still being entertaining to read! I’ll do my best to try and answer every question eventually, but so far it has been a losing battle... Just don’t give up hope and think that I won’t get to a particular question you have submitted, because I do keep track of all of them, and I’ll do my best to get there eventually!
If you have questions, comments, or feedback, please feel free to leave it here (or send even more Avania Mail). If anyone would like to propose any solutions for expediting replies, or just general proposals, I’m open to suggestions... One idea I am considering trying out is to hold a poll to decide which of several questions gets answered first. Avania Issue No.1 has been processed and will be available for purchase on ComiXology December 30th 2020!
I’ll post a link to it when its page goes live on that date, so stay tuned. The first issue costs only $.99, and features not only the full-resolution remastered comic pages, but also bonus art not available anywhere else!
I have submitted Issues 2-5 for approval, and I hope to have them up soon after. Subsequent issues will be $1.99 and feature both the full-res pages, and special issue-only artwork in gorgeous high-resolution detail!
If you’ve read the Avania webcomic and would like to enjoy the detailed artwork in a format it was designed for, or would just like to support my work, consider buying a digital copy when it comes out. The print copies will be coming soon too, and I think both formats offer unique benefits to the reading experience!

Post Chapter 17 (Part 1) Status Update
It's already that time again? Half a chapter goes by even faster than a whole chapter, but I think it's better than no chapter! Fortunately, chapter 17 has a scene transition with a short time jump roughly halfway through, so splitting it into two parts shouldn't feel too jarring.
2023 has turned into quite a taxing year for me for multiple reasons, and my available time and energy has unfortunately slowed comic production to a crawl... Chapter 17 is fully written and sketched out, but actually illustrating it is the most labor-intensive part and can be very slow going on the highly populated panels.
To keep my morale up and avoid burnout I've always enjoyed making non-comic art along with my comic pages (even if that art is also Avania related), and this year is no exception... Drawing whatever I felt like has been an important stress-reliever for me lately, but advancing the story of Avania is also something I find very fulfilling--at a glacial pace or not!
Anyway, thanks for reading and thank you for your patience. I look forward to Chapter 17 (Part 2) and I'm very excited to finally get to Chapter 18 and beyond. I hope that I will be able to return to my previous production schedule soon so that I can finally share these long-written scenes with everyone!
In the meantime, look forward to more Avania Mail, closing out this year with #101!

Post-chapter 16 Status Update
Whew, back on the ground once again... And with the arrival of the White Knights at Frontier HQ, the ever-increasing cast of characters is finally assembled at this story’s principal location! There is a lot of excitement yet to come of course, and a bit of drama too... I’m very happy to already be this far into the first season-arc of Avania. Even if “already” has taken the course of nearly 5 years now, time sure is flying by!
Chapter 16 was the first chapter I have finished while a new father, and the production experience was more challenging than for previous chapters, to say the least... Never the less, I think the result was fantastic and worth all the [additional] time it took! From what I can estimate based on my current situation, I expect the upcoming chapter 17 will take a bit longer by comparison, owing to the balance of the total page count for Issue No.8 skewing slightly heavier for this next chapter. Sadly, I’ve also received some not good news that may affect my priorities and available time for a yet unknown duration.
As much as I would prefer to adhere to my previous self-imposed production schedule, I must put the needs of my family first and accept that I will have to be both flexible and perhaps a little creative with my production and release format for the time being... With that in mind, I am strongly considering posting chapter 17 in two halves so as to not go for too long without any updates to the comic.
The layouts for the chapter are all complete, and given the structure of the scenes, I think splitting it roughly in the middle would work out fine for pacing. Once I get further into drawing the chapter and am closer to the halfway point, I will make an announcement to confirm my plans for posting the pages.

5th Anniversary Status Update
Has Avania really been running for 5 years already? Time sure does fly... I would have liked to celebrate this milestone with some kind of cool new illustration or such, but as I am also just now celebrating my son’s first birthday, I will more than likely have to wait until I have regained the free time for such luxuries!
To be honest, I would have also liked to be announcing the next chapter of Avania soon, but alas that will also have to wait a bit longer than in previous years. I am making progress on completing chapter 17′s pages, but with an energetic, inquisitive, and highly-mobile baby, producing comic pages is very slow going at the moment.
As I mentioned in the Post-chapter 16 Status Update, I am considering splitting chapter 17 into two parts so as to not make everybody wait so darn long before getting another chunk of story. There is a natural break for it, and given how things have gone in the past few months, I believe this will be my course of action... How long it takes to get to that halfway point, we’ll see, but I will be sure to keep these little updates coming in any case.
Until then, keep an eye out for more Avania Mail and whatever else I can squeeze in to liven the site up. Thank you for bearing with me, and hope you all have a wonderful summer!

2022 - End of the Year Status Update
You’ve finally arrived, but our records don’t show from where.
This year--particularly the latter half--has certainly been a journey for me! In my Post-Chapter 15 Status Update, I mentioned that not only was July 8th Avania’s 4th anniversary of going live, but now also the date which I became a father... I’m writing this year’s-end update a little over three months later, and way over three months tired-er, to let everyone know how things are going.
First and foremost, Avania, Chapter 16 is nearing completion, with the Issue No. 8 front cover, and 8/10 interior pages completed! Despite a bit of a shake-up in my preferred working habits, the overall polish and quality of the art is as good, if not better than ever too!
That said, I had hoped to be wrapping up the chapter at the end of the year, in keeping with the average pace I had set in preceding years of producing Avania.
Learning how to both get enough sleep to survive and then pursue a time/labor-intensive hobby like producing a webcomic, has been quite the ongoing challenge, to put it mildly. So with that said, I’m happy to have been able to create as much as I did over the last 6 months, despite the ever-evolving demands of being a new parent!
I would like to have Chapter 16 completed by the end of January, but I suspect that unless circumstances quickly improve, I will finish at some point in February (the last two pages have a lot going on--You’ll see when we get there). No matter what the pace ends up being though, you can be certain I am still chipping away at it as much as time allows!

Avania continues (finally) with Chapter 17, part 1, November 5th at 7:00pm EST!
The wait is over at last! As I mentioned in the 5th anniversary status update, I will be splitting this chapter into two parts where there is a natural scene break, to get an update out and keep things moving--at least a little bit!
It is a bit frustrating for me to be so far from the pace I had set over the past few years of drawing and posting, but the combination of more free time during the initial pandemic years followed by the rapid reduction in free time upon entering the fatherhood years, has made for a big and continuously evolving change in how I work on art projects--Avania in particular. So thank you for your patience and support during these challenging times.
I am optimistic about the future though, because having made it this far and still kept the comic going--no matter how slowly--I believe in my ability to continue to do so. It won't be all that long before I'll be able to ramp production back up again, and my desire to get to upcoming chapters is stronger than ever!
But for now, enjoy this first half of Chapter 17. The rest of the chapter is already laid out and ready to be inked, so while it is the longer of the two halves, it will hopefully be at least a little less of a wait to see it onto the site.

Post-Chapter 15 Status Update
We’re through issue No.7 now--Hope you don’t mind a little cliff-hanger to cap off the aerial action! It was a lot of fun to draw a flying chapter again. Not since the very first issue has there been an extended sequence in the air... The encounter between the Black Lanners and the White Knights isn’t over yet, of course, so look forward to an exciting climax in chapter 16 when Avania Issue No.8 begins!
After this latest arrival, the principal cast of Frontier HQ will be assembled and ready for the rest of the story to come. As with every issue, there are scenes I’ve been planning for years now, and once this last series of introductions happens, there will be even more room to devote to character interactions and drama!
Reaching 150 completed pages (not counting covers and credits) is very exciting for me, but this milestone isn’t the only one I’m celebrating this year... This July 8th was not only the 4th anniversary of Avania going live, but is now also the day on which I became a father. It is quite an incredible coincidence that two things I care so much about would share this date, but that makes it doubly special to me now and forever more...
The next chapter of both Avania and my life are underway, and I look forward to the coming years with more anticipation than ever! Thank you to everyone for your support, and for joining me on this journey (the artistic one, anyway). As always, I love to read your comments, questions, and feedback on the comic, and I hope to see you around as we sail ever onward!

A Somber Announcement
At the end of January 2024, my father passed away.
I have no intention of ceasing comic production, but I think it is safe to say it will be some time before I can feasibly return to drawing on a regular basis. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
If you would like to join me in commemorating him, I have written a eulogy, which you may read here.

Post-Chapter 14 Status Update
We’re through the first half of Avania, Issue No.7 now, and these inter-chapter breaks are starting to feel routine. Back when I was still posting from my original 3-issue buffer, I wasn’t sure how well the change over would go... But now after several chapters of this on-off pattern, I think things have gone pretty smoothly! (Of course, I’d still prefer to just run every week without interruption, but that just isn’t feasible with my actual job). As before, chapter 15 is in production and is nearly halfway completed!
As the second chapter of the issue, that also means I have the back cover and misc. extras to complete Issue No.7, but I’m pretty confident it will all be finished by Avania’s 4th anniversary on July 8th.
Overall progress of the “season 1″ story arc also just hit a nice milestone--40% of projected pages have been completed! That’s 144 full interior comic pages out of the 360 I am aiming for (depending on how the details of the season finale go, there may be more or less).
It is exciting to be reaching the middle of the season, as even these early-middle pages seemed so far away when I launched Avania back in 2018... There’s some great action coming up, plus some other scenes I’m really looking forward to drawing. Going out even farther to the 3rd quarter of the season, there’s so much awesome stuff to be excited about, I can’t wait to get there!
In the meantime though, I hope you enjoyed the last chapter. I’ve worked very hard to try and make these comics look great in either format, and your support is greatly inspiring.

Avania Issue No.6 is now available on ComiXology! ...Apparently. Get it HERE!
So several months ago I submitted Issue 6 to ComiXology, only to learn shortly thereafter that the Submit program was being shut down and all new digital books would be submitted through Amazon / Kindle (though they could then be read in the ComiXology app as I understand it).
I ended up getting pretty into formatting my books for Guided View reading, since I liked being able to control that myself instead of depending on someone else’s design decisions, and so made Avania Issues 1-6 available on Amazon.
Since I hadn’t heard anything about my previously submitted Issue 6 being released to the ComiXology store proper, I figured it just wasn’t going to happen at this point... But then it did! Just before the end of 2021 I received an email letting me know it would be available January 5th, and voila--Here it is!
Bit of a strange way for things to shake out, but at least now you can purchase both digital and print copies of Issues 1-6 on whichever platforms you prefer.

POST-CHAPTER 13 / Issue No.6 STATUS UPDATE
Another new chapter down, and with it the completion of Avania No.6 -- I hope you enjoyed the issue! As with last time, comic updates will be paused while I complete Chapter 14, but will resume weekly posts when it is ready. My goal is to start publishing again at the end of 2021... Maybe in time to be a holiday gift!
Speaking of gifts, I am almost ready to offer print copies of Issue No.6 (along with the first 5 issues already available) on IndyPlanet -- I just have to finish quality-checking my draft copies.
Meanwhile, I submitted Issue No.6 to ComiXology a month or so ago, only to then receive news that ComiXology’s web store would be folded into the Kindle Store, and that in order for new digital copies to be sold, I would have to re-submit them via Kindle Desktop Publishing (folks who already purchased Avania issues on ComiXology will still be able to read them as normal)...
Although this was unexpected and will slightly delay Issue No.6 becoming available as a downloadable issue (it was approved by ComiXology oddly enough, but I doubt it’ll be available before their web store changes over), I am actually rather happy to have to manually set up Issues 1-6 to be able to use the Guided View formatting, because now I can set it exactly as I’d like it!
If you haven’t purchased Avania digitally yet and would like a unique reading experience with nice, high-resolution artwork, you’ll soon have an additional incentive to do so! I’m really happy with how the comic looks using my customized Guided View formatting (it’s optional, so you can still read the full pages normally too).
