I kept expecting an explanation for why you would have a pit full of woolen sponges, but so far it hasn't come up again.

Does anyone know what's up with this?

I’m not an expert on Islām but I do know just enough about Judaism for my jaw to drop at the stupid. So here goes:

Israelis want a bunch of things, and have different priorities with regards to achieving them. That’s why Israel’s multipartisan system is in such a mess right now. It’s really not that difficult to understand when you see them as, y’know, individual people and not a monolith.

I live in Israel. I’ve been to mass here three times. On the other hand, I’ve come across people who were openly hostile towards Christians… and didn’t actually bother to hide it. Israel and Jews in general have a more complicated relationship with Christians, and you can generally take the individual Jewish person’s opinions at their word; at most they might look down on Christians but keep a polite demeanour—much like quite a few Christians do.

…Those who aren’t proud tend to, y’know… leave.

Bava Kamma is neither Yiddish (it’s Aramaic) nor a ‘doctrine’. It’s a tractate in the Mishna, with an elaboration in the Talmud that has been blatantly misquoted: in context, you see that it’s one of the sages saying this, and everyone else shooting him down.
