I was about to fully fall asleep in the On Call room, when my pager started beeping. Ugh. It was the E.R. Probably some drunkies who found a way to hurt themselves. I get up, putting on my running shoes and fixing myself up before heading out.

It was Saturday Night, one of the doctors was getting married, so many attending doctors were spending their time celebrating in Vegas. I was invited, but with me just becoming a surgical attending, I thought spending time at the Hospital would build my experience.

I had barely slept in the past 36 hours, with a recent bus crash and all the victims being rushed to the hospital I worked at, it was hard to sleep and when I finally got some time to myself, some drunk guys showed up.

I walked into the Emergency Room, putting on my gloves and gown.

“They are 4 minutes out. Also the paramedics said that the patient's friend is coming with them. Their BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) is about 0.175, so they are pretty drunk,” the nurse informs as I head to the doors.

As I wait for the ambulance, I can already feel myself dozing off. I hear the siren coming closer, I slap myself on the face to awaken myself. I stretch myself out being prepared for whatever was to come. The paramedics get out of the ambulance, and head to open the back door.

“They are pretty drunk. You’re in for a very long night,” one of them says. I can already hear them yelling at each other, even though the door is locked.

“A male about the age of 25 and has a knife stuck in his tibia, we assume. We had to drag him out of a party, so we don’t have any I.D and when we asked his friend for his name he called him ‘Dumbass Rich White Boy’ so..” the other one explains.

The paramedics open the door and the person I least expected jumps out. Me saying I’m shocked would be the biggest understatement of my whole entire lifetime.

“Brian?” I exclaim.

“O.M.G it’s y/n!” he slurs.

I look over to the person on the stretcher. I have to do a double take, because I can't help but feel that my eyes have betrayed me. Shawn. The paramedics wheel Shawn down into the hospital, taking him into a secluded room.

I run behind them, Brian repeated telling Shawn that he was being a wuss for coming to the hospital. I enter the room, seeing Brian slapping Shawn on the face, for whatever reason, and Shawn laughing on top of his lungs. Boy, was this going to be a long night!

I head over to Shawn’s leg, examining the damage. With Shawn constantly laughing, it’s hard to examine.

“Hey doc, my leg hurts, can you do somethin’ ‘bout it?” Shawn slurs.

“Well you shouldn’t have stuck a knife in there. Don’t you think?” I reply. “Hook up 1 of morphine,” I continue this time talking to the nurse.

“y/n?” he asks, the room eerie now.

“Yes. It’s me Shawn. So can I ask how you ended up with a knife in your lower leg?” I ask, ignoring my heart skipping beats at the way he said my name.

“Oh, Brian said I’m a pussy so I showed him how i’m not a pussy.”

“Well..” Brian starts laughing, “You’re still a pussy, you didn’t let me pull the knife. PUSSY.” Brian exclaims still laughing.

“Okay, well Shawn, we need to get an X-Ray to see how extensive the damage is.” I reply ignoring Brian, because nothing good was coming out of him.

As I’m pushing Shawn’s gurney towards the Radiation Room, with Brian hot on my heels, I spot an intern, I call him over and ask him to assist me on this case, thinking I might as well teach someone something, after all it was a teaching hospital.

“Okay Shawn, you have to stay still, okay?”

“Why?” he questions drunkenly.

“Just listen to her, dumbass,” Brian chimes from the back.

“Brian say another word, and i will cuff you to this chair and put duct tape over your mouth! You hear me?” I state having enough of his bullshit.

“Y/n are you gonna leave me here all alone? Cus’ i’m scared. What if this machine eats me?”

“No Shawn i’m right here. Just stay still for ten seconds, okay?”

I go over to the computer, dragging Brian by the ear with me. I sit on the chair, the intern observing my actions and sitting beside me in another chair.

“Stand there, and don’t you dare move!” I tell Brian, he looks at me with the saddest puppy dog eyes, making me almost go soft for him.

“So do you know them, Dr.y/l/n,” the intern asks.

“YA! Her and the guy in there use to fuck,” Brian exclaims happily.

“Brian I will kill you! And you know that,” I say to him as I apologize to the intern for Brian’s behavior.

The X-rays load up on the computer screen, the intern, Ethan, and I both examining the X-ray for any fatal damage.

“Well, he wouldn’t need surgery, so that’s good, but we need to pull out the knife without damaging any nerves, and then we can stitch him up.” I say.

“Well he will for sure have to stay here for the night though, right?” the intern asks.

“Oh ya, for sure, with his drunken state, and the cut being that deep, he needs to be kept under examination for a day,” I reply and head over to Shawn, moving the machine away from him.

“The machine didn’t eat me!!” Shawn gasps. I chuckle at his stupidness, him still being the person he was years ago.

The intern pushes his gurney back to the room he was in, while I grab Brian, making him walk with me.

“Okay, Listen, Ethan and I are gonna go grab some things so we can pull out the knife. Don’t touch him, okay Brian? And Shawn don’t move, just stay still.” I say to the both of them. It was 3 am and there weren’t enough nurses to help us, and Ethan who just joined about a month ago didn’t know much about the different types of sutures. So me taking Ethan with me was the only choice I had.

On our way back both Ethan and I’s hands were full of medical stuff, we both are right outside Shawn’s room when we hear him scream. It sounded like a painful one, I opened the door, scared to see what I would be served with. Then I see Brian holding a bloody knife in his hand. Did he try to stab Shawn? And then I look over to Shawn’s leg, the knife that was there when I left, now non existent.

“Here, I made it easier for you! Now you just need to stitch him up.” Brian announces proudly. Shawn still breathing heavily due to the pain.

I head over to Shawn and push more morphine in him to help him with the pain, paying no attention to Brian. “Ethan take him out and hook him with a banana bag, and make sure he doesn’t move from his place,” I say referring to Brian.

Shawn calms down and I start re-examining his leg, praying to god I don't have to operate on him, knowing it would make his life ten times harder, for at least a couple of weeks. After examining his leg with a reflex hammer, seeing no nerve damage, I breathed out in relief.

When I start suturing up Shawn, he starts talking again.

“Where’s Brian?” He questions.

“I had to send him out, he was being highly inappropriate.”

“Oh.” He replies. After a little while he speaks again, “can i tell you a secret? You can’t tell anyone though. It can only stay between the two of us.”

“Yea sure. I promise, I won’t tell anyone.”

“Because I had you… you know the song I wrote? Yea, well I wrote that song cus’ of you.” He says, staring up at the ceiling.

“Shawn you’re drunk, you don’t know what you’re talking about,” I reply taken aback a little.

“Yea I do.”

I stay quiet not knowing what to say, or knowing I would say something stupid. I stitch him up, and then leave the room. I tell the nurse to move Shawn into a real room to spend the night. I don’t see him the entire night, after that.

I head back to the On Call room, kicking of my sneakers, and laying down on the bed. I grab my phone and air-pods, searching up ‘Because I had you.’ I hadn’t made an effort to listen to his new music knowing it would fuck me up. I lay on my side, listening to his song, my eyes a little teary. Man, did he know how to make me cry. I drift off, listening to his music, finally clinging on to some sleep.

I wake up the next morning, music still playing. How did my phone not die? I re-do my ponytail and head to the bathroom to brush my teeth, and start on rounds. It’s Sunday morning, a lot of the families of the patients already here spending some quality time with their loved ones. A lot of the families are very nice, and some even offer my breakfast to which I politely declined. I look at the name of the last patient on the charts. Shawn Peter Raul Mendes.

I take a deep breathe and enter his room. He has company, Brian sitting on the couch, an old woman -who I suppose is his mom, serving him breakfast, and a younger woman -did he get a new girlfriend???

“Oh Hi, Y/n,” Shawn chimes happily. “Meet my family, That’s my mom and that is my little sister,” he says pointing at each one of them. Oh that’s his sister!

“Nice to meet you,” I say smiling at them politely. “Well I’m sorry but you will have to step back for a second, I just need to take a look at his leg.” His mother moves back smiling at me.

“Well I know for sure Shawn isn’t going to be partying ever after this,” She says. I smile at her comment.

“Does it hurt here?” I ask him.

“A little.” He replies, his voice betrays him though, or maybe I just know his voice well enough to know he’s lying.

“I’m your doctor, Y’know you can’t be lying to me.”

“Well you could be my girlfriend,” he responds casually.

I stiffen up for a second. What the hell? First of all, why would he say that, second of all, why would he say that in front of his family and third of all, why would he say that?! I look up at him giving me the softest smile. Oh fuck him and his beautiful face!

“Shawn where are your manners? She is your doctor, and you respect her for helping you after you and Brian tried to almost kill you!” His mother exclaims, I mentally thank her for saving my ass.

“Well we weren’t tryi-” Shawn is cut off.

“Well, I mean, they were going out before, so the comment isn’t totally inappropriate,” Brian states. What a dumbass.

“What?!” his sister exclaims.

My cheeks are now burning red, I want to run out of the room. I can feel everyone's eyes burning holes deep inside me. I stay put, and keep examining his stitches.

“Well, I’ll prescribe you some pain meds, and the pain should go away, and then you can be discharged in the evening,” I say as I head out the door.

“Y’know you are supposed to answer all the questions your patient asks you, you still didn’t answer mine,” I stopped dead in my tracks, not knowing how to reply to his idioticness.

They called me 'J' on set. I go for music broadcasts after having a dawn shoot and there fans would ask, "MJ, have you eaten?". So there were instances where I looked at them. We also have cheer supports and my body would always react each time during MJ’s part. The cameras shoot each of us and even though I’d be acting all gentlemanly and cool, I’ll break into a small chuckle when stuff like that happens. MJ: Seems like it was destiny (laughs).

MJ was an arrogant star in the drama. What’s the actual MJ like? MJ: I don’t know anything (laughs). A drama is just a drama.

Was there anything difficult when you were filming? Eunwoo: It was tough for me to adjust to the set when we were shooting our first scene. It was hard trying to understand the set’s atmosphere. That’s why I was awkward in the beginning. I consulted the director beforehand the scenes I was worried about so they came out better than I thought.

Between an actor and a singer, which is more charming? Eunwoo: The charms of both are really different. You can’t imitate the euphoria you experience on stage. The sense of accomplishment you feel towards the material you prepared is greater for acting. I may come across like a greedy person but I don’t want to lose either of them.

At first I only remembered the times when we sat for acting classes together but he acted better than I thought he would so I was unknowingly drawn in. Did the members really not tease you? Eunwoo: Amongst my lines, there’s one that goes, "Why?" JinJin kept on asking "Why? Why?" then. They really didn’t make fun of me besides that. Seeing as how they didn’t tease me, I thought, "So I did well," (laughs).

He was shocked and thought I was joking, but I knew I was pregnant in my heart. We were just one month away from approaching one year of marriage, and this was the perfect gift. We went to the store and purchased multiple inexpensive tests, and I came back home, took two, and waited on the results. Instantly, two lines that indicated I was pregnant popped up. I gave him both tests, and he was the happiest I had seen him in the five years we have been together. So, first, we thought about who we could tell. Well, our parents, of course. We invited his mom and aunt over and handed them the tests, and their reaction was priceless. They jumped up and down, screamed for joy, and hugged us both. However, his mom insisted we get a more reliable test. So, my husband and my mother-in-law set out to buy more tests. When they returned, I took two more tests, and that was all the confirmation that we needed that Baby Williams was coming in 2020. My parents live about 1 hour, and 15 minutes, we hopped in the car again and got on the road to deliver them the good news. We arrived at my parent’s house unannounced they were confused at first, but happy to see us. We started chatting, my husband was smiling ear to ear, so we showed them our bag of tests, and they were sooooo excited. We discussed names, and my dad was super delighted to hear he would get another namesake (other than myself) if I bore a baby boy. We went back home happy as can be and cooked dinner that night. The next morning, we went out to get prenatal vitamins and healthier food options, because we were determined this would be a great experience! On Monday morning, I called my gynecologist’s office, scheduled my first prenatal appointment, which was nearly a month away. I was concerned as first, but the office assured me this was normal, and they gave me all the new rules/precautions because of COVID-19 (our nation other parts of the world are in a pandemic state due to this new virus).  Examples: My husband could not come with me to experience my first prenatal appointment. Have a mask on, or you will be provided with one. I also called my insurance provider to notify them of my pregnancy. They offered to enroll me in a Motherhood Management program because it was my first pregnancy, and a Nurse Practitioner would send me articles and call me biweekly to check-in. I could also call them if I had questions about my new experience. A few weeks later, I was off to my first prenatal appointment. Nervous, yet excited. I got dressed (put on a new dress, makeup, and styled my hair—something I had not done in months due to working remotely because of COVID-19). If you know me well, I always wear a new outfit for a memorable experience—I buy a lot of clothes. Haha. When I arrived, I was met at the door by a medical assistant (MA) that checked my temperature and asked me if I had a fever or traveled out of the country in the last 14 days. My answer to all those questions was NO. I had on a surgical mask; the MA offered me another. I tucked the new cover away in my purse and then checked in for my appointment. I wrote my name down, assured the front desk my address or insurance provider had not changed, and she told me I’d be meeting with a doctor, I wasn’t familiar with him. I knew I was scheduled to see my regular doctor, but I was anxious to know if my pregnancy was going well. I saw the stranger danger (I’m joking, of course, but I would have felt more comfortable seeing my usual doctor, who were familiar with my struggles with obesity and fibroids—we’d also discussed a pregnancy plan in February). The appointment was a struggle for the beginning. I went in for an ultrasound, and since I had fibroids, I was used to getting pelvic ultrasounds to measure fibroid growth, but this time was different. The technician counted fibroids and then pointed out the pregnancy; we heard a heartbeat and printed out copies of the ultrasound for me. Then I met this new doctor, who came in and announced I was pregnant. Well, I already knew that, sir. He performed a pelvic exam, saw a little concern, but told me it was probably from a subchorionic hemorrhage, but since my cervix was not dilated to keep an eye on it. My husband texted me the entire appointment wanting updates and asking questions. How I wished he could have been there in person. I was already worried about possibly miscarrying because statistics show 85% of miscarriages happen in the first trimester. But I came home with hope and continued working remotely and taking an online class.  After my 4th Zoom meeting of the week, on a Friday, I got up to use the restroom and saw concern. My husband had just gotten home and was about to shower. I asked what do you think I should do, we Google, called my doctor’s office (they were closed, and the answering service was acting janky), and made a few more calls and decided to go to the ER. Again, I am met at the door with questions and people wanting to take my temperature. I fill out a form, and I am immediately taken into triage. I explain the problem I am having, and I am taken into a room. The doctor on call comes in and preps me with a miscarriage speech. We took lots of tests, and I was taken for two more ultrasounds, I asked the technician a question she was not allowed to answer. At that moment, she tells me a comforting story about one of her pregnancies, and I am taken back in the room. Twenty minutes later, I am escorted to my car to get my charger to keep my husband updated—and the doctor comes back in to tell me I suffered an incomplete miscarriage. At that point, I was scrolling through Facebook, leaving a comment on my friend’s picture, as she and her husband had just made their pregnancy public. I cried. The nurse brought me Kleenex and asked if she could do anything else for me; I told her no. She brought me a folder with two print outs explaining what an incomplete miscarriage was, and I drove myself home. My husband and I pulled up to our apartment at the same time. We hugged, and I cried a little more. We went upstairs and decided to come back out and get some food because I had not eaten since breakfast. We told our parents the sad news—They tried to be positive, and I appreciated that. After the weekend, it was time to celebrate our 1st anniversary, and we made it! My husband brought roses 🌹 home while I was out grocery shopping to prepare for a COVID-19 anniversary dinner. I was surprised when I got back home, and they were on the table. That was sweet. Later that day, we went out to get cupcakes (any sweets are my favorite) and my absolute favorite flowers, SUNFLOWERS!!! 🌻 We ate a nice dinner and talked about the heck of the weekend we had, but still blessed to be celebrating our anniversary.  Later in the week, I had another appointment, and since I had an incomplete miscarriage, I had to decide how to pass the pregnancy with the doctor. The less invasive way seemed to be medication, so that is what I chose. After a hell of a day of announcing Student Affairs Division Award winners and completing my Facilitating Career Development presentation– I went out and got lunch. I told my husband he would have to assist me with this process—we did it. He also went out and got me pain pills to help. I took the first round of meds, and then, I set the alarm to take the second round. The pain was manageable—but the types of undies I had to wear were not, lol. I felt pain for like another week, and I finally passed my pregnancy. That Tuesday of passing the pregnancy was the worst pain I had ever experienced—worst than my degenerative fibroid from two summers ago. I could not even eat my dinner, which consisted of wingettes, and those are my favorites if you know me well. My husband knew I was in pain because I push them to the side and got in bed. After passing the pregnancy, we talked about it and went out to get donuts. If you know us, you know we like to eat. Friday was the first day I felt like myself. I went for a steam and did some grocery shopping. This month has been hard. I tried to write in my topic journal and could not find any reasons to be grateful. However, I am thankful to share my story. I am grateful for my parents, mother-in-law, aunt-in-law, and husband.

My Backwoods Abortion/The Scariest Day of my Life

When I was in high school I knew a girl who had an abortion at age 17. I remember thinking to myself ‘I will never do that’. What’s that saying? We make plans and God laughs? God must have been howling.

In the early fall of 2009 I was 18. I was a freshman at Reinhardt College in North Georgia, which is affiliated with the Methodist church. I was an Psychology major with plans to become a therapist (again, God laughs). I lived on campus and was still working on making friends. I had been in a committed relationship with my boyfriend for a little over a year and I was head over heels in love. We were sexually active and I was on birth control. Things were, overall, pretty good. I was struggling a little with my mental illness, but it was generally under control. And then it happened. On a clear day in September I realized I was 3 weeks late.

I called my best friend at the time in an all out panic. There’s no way, right?! I’m on birth control! So, I bought a 2 pack of pregnancy tests all while trying to convince myself that I was overreacting. I peed on the first stick and awaited the results for 5 minutes (longest 5 minutes of my life) and then I looked. 2 pink horizontal lines. I was in the doorway to my bathroom and I collapsed. I sat there in shock for a few minutes before I began sobbing. I called my best friend and took the second test while on the phone with her. Again, same result. In that moment on the dirty, cold, tile, bathroom floor I thought to myself “I can’t do this”. It was a defining moment in my life. On that beautiful fall day I went from being “pro life” to “pro choice”.

I called my boyfriend and gave him the news. He was shocked. “So, what do we do?” he asked. “I’m going to have an abortion” I responded. But first I was going to talk to the school nurse. I went to my SUPER LIBERAL RA and delivered the news. She went downstairs with me to talk to the nurse. With tears in my eyes and a shaky voice I told the nurse my dilemma. She listened to me and my decision, handed me some tissues, and then placed a little box in my hands. Inside the box was a tiny 1 inch baby on a bed of cotton balls. “This is what your baby looks like” she said. To which my RA responded “No. Her FETUS looks more like a semicolon” and then we walked out. I sobbed for a bit in my RAs room before heading back to mine.

Again, I called my best friend. She helped me find a clinic. There were only 2 options that we could find anywhere near my area and I called up the closest one, 45 minutes away. 2 hours after finding out I was pregnant I had an abortion scheduled for 3 days later. Some might view my decision as “hasty”, but I knew what was best for me. I was not emotionally, mentally, or financially stable enough to have a child. I was on life saving medications that would most likely cause serious birth defects or miscarriage. I didn’t want to drop out of college. When you know, you know. I have no regrets.

Three days later, on a murky and cool Friday, my boyfriend drove up to take me to the clinic. I signed in at the front desk. We paid up front and in cash so it wouldn’t show up on my insurance because I didn’t want my parents to know. We waited for roughly an hour before my name was called. I cannot stress this enough- it was the most terrifying experience of my life.

In the back, I was given a handful of pills to take before the procedure. I was given little explanation as to what the pills were, but MY GOD did they take effect quickly. I was then given forms to sign and, in my state, I could hardly hold the pen let alone read what was written. But, I signed them nonetheless. The nurse (or whoever the hell she was) told me to strip down and gave me one of those blue medical sheets to wrap myself in. She led me into the next room and sat me down on a red COUCH along with 3 other women. For the life of me I can’t remember what the other ladies were talking about, but I listened to them converse for 20 minutes before a different nurse ushered me into the procedure room. I was instructed to removed the sheet and lie on my back on the table. The nurse conducted an ultrasound and I can still hear her say “Do you want to see the baby”? I promptly slurred “NO!”. Moments later the doctor entered the room and the nurse put an IV in my arm. I don’t remember anything after that.

I don’t know how much time passed, but I woke up to my boyfriend rubbing my right shoulder. It was over. I was HEAVILY sedated so he had to help me put on my sweats and shoes. Upon leaving I was given a bottle of pain pills with a scrap of paper with dosage instructions. No number to call. No follow up appointment. My boyfriend more or less carried me to the car. He told me later there were protestors present. For some unknown reason I told him I wanted chicken nuggets so we drove to McDonalds. We were waiting in the drive thru line when I was overcome with pain and nausea. I opened the car door and leaned out as quickly as I could before throwing up bile for the next 10 minutes. I felt like my insides were falling out. It was completely terrifying. It is the most pain I’ve ever been in in my life and I had brain cancer as a kid so I’m no stranger to pain.

My saint of an RA let my boyfriend stay in my dorm room for the weekend (I had a private room), which was 100% unacceptable at Reinhardt. He heaved me up onto my lofted twin sized bed and I quickly fell asleep for a few hours. When I woke up I thought I was dying. I took some pain medication and then made my way to the bathroom to throw it all up. Slumped down beside the toilet, I beat my knuckles bloody against the white cinderblock wall. I was in complete agony and petrified. As I was given little information at the clinic, I did not know what to expect. But, I was sure that something had gone terribly wrong.

My boyfriend and RA took care of me while I recovered and by Monday afternoon I was myself again. I remember eating a lot of Easy Mac and chewy chocolate chip granola bars during that time. Life went back to normal and my boyfriend and I never really brought it up again. But, you remember how I said I thought something must have gone wrong? For 2 years after the abortion I refused to have a vaginal exam. I was convinced I was “broken”. Thankfully, I can tell you that I eventually did have an examination and everything is in working order.

About 2 months after my abortion that clinic was shut down due to unsafe conditions and expired licenses of both nurses and doctors. There were multiple arrests.

I tell you my story because there is a president in the White House who is trying to make abortion illegal. He wants to take away a woman's right to abortion which is considered by the UN to be a basic human right. Outlawing abortion will not stop it, but it will make it unsafe. My backwoods and unsanitary abortion will, in many ways, become a fairytale story. Do you know how abortions were preformed before Roe V Wade was passed? Women shoved coat hangers and sewing needles up their vaginas. They used bleach or turpentine douches. While it may not go back to those extremes, the procedures will not be regulated. Any random Joe who puts “Dr.” in front of his name could perform an abortion.

Our president wants to defund Planned Parenthood because PP assists women with abortion. Fun fact: Under Title X, PLANNED PARENTHOOD RECEIVES NO FEDERAL FUNDING FOR ABORTION SERVICES. What will happen is women and men will lose access to a myriad of healthcare services including affordable prescribed birth control and other contraceptives, cancer screenings, assistance with rape and sexual assault, HIV/AIDS and other STD testing, high blood pressure screenings, thyroid screenings, anemia screenings, pap tests, and more. Only 3% of women who go to PP are seeking abortion services.

Having access to affordable birth control and honest sexual education (enough of that abstinence nonsense) reduces the rate of abortions. As access to these services has increased, the abortion rate has decreased. The rate of abortions has decreased drastically since the 1980s.

If you have religious concerns regarding abortion, I completely respect that. That is you right as an American. But, America is not a religious entity. That whole separation of church and State thing is a thing (although it’s gotten completely out of hand). While I am not a Christian, I am a daughter of a Lutheran minister. I was raised to believe in the love and compassion of a savior with the authority to absolve all sins. I was taught that I was saved my God’s grace and His grace alone. I was taught to hate the sin and not the sinner. If you believe abortion is a sin, OK. But, spreading hatred based on your religious convictions just adds fuel to the Devil’s fire. Jesus broke bread and drank wine with the untouchables of the world and instructed His followers to love our neighbor as we love ourself. If you are a Christian, you believe that Jesus was crucified, died, was buried, rose again, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. Through his struggle we are forgiven of all sins. We are loved unconditionally. What’s that slogan? What would Jesus do? Remember that the next time you judge others that “sin” differently than you. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

So, that’s it. That’s the story of the scariest day of my life. I invite you to share your own stories because it’s time to speak up if you can.
