Stumpwater, that is water that has collected in the hollow bowl of a tree stump, is an interesting part of folk materia medica. Its use can be found throughout the Ozarks and the Appalachians, and I wouldn’t be surprised if other cultures were to use the mystical substance as well. Stumpwater is mostly connected to the healing of certain dermatological issues like warts, rashes, and sometimes even freckles. But the water has also been used in the making of herbal infusions. The idea being that the stumpwater has more power than regular water because it is elevated above the rest of the land. Vance Randolph mentions stumpwater several times in his “Ozark Magic and Folklore,” here are a few quotes: “The skin disease called tetter is treated with spunk water or stump water simply rain water which happens to be retained in a hollow stump.” “When a hillman tries to remove warts by applying stump water he repeats this formula: Stump water, stump water, Kill these — warts! The dash represents the number of warts that the patient has, and it is essential to state this number correctly. If a man says six when he has only five warts, the warts will not be cured, and another one will appear in a few days.” “Most of the old-timers believe that a woman should never be bathed ‘all over,’ or her bedding completely changed, for nine days after the child is born. Some say that the palms of a child’s hands should not be washed until the child is three days old to do so washes away the infant’s luck, particularly in financial matters. It is always best to bathe a new baby’s head with stump water; if ordinary water is used, the child is likely to be prematurely bald when it grows up.” One can say that most of the lore behind stumpwater likely came into the Ozarks from the Appalachian people. A similar wart-cure can be found in the book “A Tennessee Folklore Sampler” by Ted Olson and Anthony P. Cavender: “To remove a wart go to an old hollow stump that contains water and wash the hands or warts in the stump water. After doing this, walk home without looking back and the wart will go away.” A few more Appalachian uses of stumpwater come from the wonderful book “Folk Medicine in Southern Appalachia” by Anthony Cavender: “To treat and prevent pimples and blackheads, the face was washed with buttermilk, a solution of Epsom salts or soda, human urine, stumpwater (water collected in a tree cavity or stump, also called ‘spunkwater’), a decoction made from witch hazel or ratsbane leaves, or dew of the first day in May.” “Stumpwater, buttermilk, dew of the first fay in May, and a cow manure facial also were used to remove freckles.” “Southern Appalachian folk medicine is abundant with beliefs about contracting and removing warts. Some of the more frequently mentioned naturalistic remedies were rubbing warts with castor oil, a chicken gizzard, a slice of Irish potato, bean leaves, or stumpwater and inserting a hot needle into the warts.” In my last post on the interactions between white and Native medicines I mentioned the use of stumpwater as a practice shared by both the white and Cherokee communities. Who gave the practice to whom is still debatable, but the fact remains that both communities considered stumpwater as an important part of the materia medica. Frans M. Olbrechts, in “The Swimmer Manuscript” mentions a Cherokee medicine man who only used water in healing: “Spencer Bird, an old medicine man, now dead, used to rely on the sole purifying power of water. The informant who told me this vaguely hinted at the probability of the water being some ‘special water,’ such as that scooped out of a stump (‘stump water’) or even out of the stump of a lightning-struck tree.” The use of stumpwater bears some semblance to other folk medicines such as the use of certain “flying” plants, meaning plants that are growing out of trees, or rock faces, that have never touched the ground. The power here is that the “flying” plant has some mystical connection to the sky, and is therefore given an added potency as a medicine or magical item. A common example of this idea is the mistletoe plant, which has been considered a mystical or magical plat partially because it hangs in the air without touching the ground. There’s a tradition throughout the Ozarks and Appalachians (and one can see the original belief throughout Europe) that the mistletoe will only be effective in protecting the home when it is cut and never allowed to touch the ground. We can see the same concept with the stumpwater, the idea here being that the water fell from the sky and hangs in the air, not touching the ground. The power of the stumpwater then isn’t in the chemical makeup of the water itself, but in the fact that it has been given a magical quality by being set apart from other puddles, creeks, and water sources.

The Empty Nest.......

The absolute hardest thing for both Eric and me but especially for me was coming to the realization that the nest had become empty. When Kristen came home for spring break, with no chance to return to her beloved Verde Valley School to finish her senior year, enjoy the senior traditions and of course graduate, went house hunting and found an absolute knock out steal of a deal, a beautiful large 2 story home in Kona. Rande, Chucho, Sasha, Kristen and Koen decided to make it home and quickly moved in. We were not quite prepared that this empty nest could and/or would become a permanent arrangement so quickly but life has a way of pitching curve balls. I think I am still not accepting the fact that all my girls are grown and living their own very successful lives. This was the catalyst for Eric and I to realize that our dream of living aboard and becoming full time cruisers was actually going to be a reality.

Falicia has FINALLY given up the exhausting work of serving in the restaurant business and has taken her next step toward working in education as she had always dreamed, ever since she was a young senior at Verde Valley School. "I am going to come back here some day as a teacher mom" she told me long ago. Now she is serving in the admin. office at Kona Pacific Charter School and wears many hats there at Kona's finest Waldorf school. Our little bolt of lightening, her son, Kai skipped first grade at his last Waldorf school up Hamakua Coast and will be entering second grade, right there where mama administers every day. He is a sharp little boy and can easily read at 4th grade level. He can do algebra problems in his head and solves most mathematical riddles before any of the rest of us can. He keeps his teachers hopping so they decided best if he skipped at least one grade. They packed up their truck and moved back to Honaunau not far from their home where Kai was born. These two are quite the team and words cannot explain how fun it is to watch them learn and grow together. They are the real beach buns of the family and on their spare time they are found exploring the island and her many hidden secrets. Kai has become quite the swimmer and is dying to put on a bc and regulator so he can breathe underwater like the fish. We look forward to teaching them both how to scuba dive in the near future.

Rande, Chucho and Sasha are living and loving their new home which they share with Kristen and Koen. Chucho has created a marvelously scrumptious garden which feeds them fresh food daily while he also works full time in construction and is waiting for the come back of Kona Brewing Co. Where he has earned employee of the month several times. I'd you ever make it to Kona Brew Co. you want Chucho as your server. Rande has become quite the entertainer opening their home to friends and family dinners. Their cat, Big Boy rescued two little pinkie rat babies who were only a few hours old and brough them to Ms. Rande. She and Sasha, being the animal lovers they are, nursed them, love them and kept them alive. Now they are thriving bouncing little baby rats who are so attached to these girls that all they want to do is play with them and won't stand still until they do. Rande and Sasha were giving feedings every 4 hours for weeks until Nibbles and Squeaks became old enough to eat formula on their own. Sasha Enjoyed her 8th grade year at Hawaii Technical Academy and, well, this year, will be learning from home like most of the kids on the islands. Sasha is quite the popular girl and the house is always busy with her friends around playing in the pool, yard and of course video games. Sasha is the champ and I don't know anyone who has defeated her yet!!

KrisKo

Kristen and Koen are precious to watch. They are so in love and devoted to each other. We have given them the name KrisKo because they truly have become one. Their graduation from high school this year was........unusual. it was at the height of the Covid scare and most people were afraid to leave their homes so we had 2 drive by graduation get togethers. They were both buried under their leis and even though it was not what they were expecting for their high school graduation. They handled it well. Their outlook together is always like, "well, that happened, okay, next!!!" Their bright outlook on life inspires EVERYONE they come into contact with. Kriaten graduated from VVS with her IB diploma so when she starts college she already has her first year of credits behind her so she received a nice jump start on that. She and Koen are planning to attend U of H Palamanui Campus in Kona and begin their education. Kristen is not sure exactly where she wants to make her career, she is things cosmetology lately and Koen wants to work in marine biology. They live in the right place for both of those venues plus Koen works very hard in his families business of providing and maintaining purified water filling stations throughout the island. They are both working their tails off and doing a great job of making their way in the world.

Eric and I feel very blessed and relaxed to know that the kids are all doing so well. We sleep well at night knowing the family is still stuck together, supporting one another and caring for each other in these trying times. The island of Hawaii is pretty much cut off from the world right now but no deaths from the virus so they are all making the very best of this situation which is anything but. Thursday, January 16, 2020 – 11:12 p.m.

Here we have another session of find the cat. He is a rascally little rabbit. He is beginning to find out who he is. He is waking up inside. He is beginning the ascension process in this New Energy. Everything is becoming new again. Even better than new. It is being brought here by the ones that brought you to this planet.

You are being guided step by step in a never-ending cycle of the Divine Love within. Here we have the one who will begin the ascension process tonight. He will begin to write of things to come. He will begin again for the very first time.

He is attuned to the New Frequency and is beginning the first stages of enlightenment. It’s quite a show. One can literally change into a completely New Human. Here is the formula for success. Begin by being still and knowing that God is inside. Begin by learning to listen to that still small voice inside. Pay attention to it.

It will guide you into new realms of existence. You have been trained to do this. Therefore, you are here. Begin tonight to just let go into Spirit. Follow the white rabbit. Go down the rabbit hole and bring us back something interesting.

Begin by going into the center of the vortex. After you are there, feel an immense gratitude for all there is. Know that this is the person you only dreamed of being a few years back. Now we are all grown up. But, are we? What’s so important about growing up anyway?

I tell you this, you should be more childlike. Go out and play more. Look at the world through New Eyes. Look away from the distraction of reality for a moment and catch a glimpse of the Divine. You will never want to go back for you have seen the truth.

You will begin to see everything in a new Light. It will begin within and radiate outward into the world. It will be a marvelous show. When you live your life for Spirit you begin a new journey on the right path. And I’m not talking about religion. I’m talking about feeling Love from the Source of Love itself.

There’s nothing else like it. Once you get touched with the light it affects your entire being. Your very cells wake up and realize the truth. And that truth is that you are deeply loved by Source. Not only that but you are in a new energy now and the planet is being bathed with the light.

You must’ve felt it. It’s quite grand living in the light. It’s nice out in the bright sunshine. To reside here in the calm center of one’s being and radiate light outward into the world is what the New Human is doing on this planet right now.

Many are waking up inside. They are beginning to see beyond the illusion. The veil is being lifted like a curtain right before a show. And oh, what a show it will be. We’re not even five minutes into the first act and already millions are waking up simultaneously. Beyond that, new people are being born each day. I think you call them babies.

These babies being born are the masters that have walked the planet before and are arriving back in response to the new light energy on this planet. Keep a good eye out in the next twenty years. They will set the world ablaze with new ideas. They will be the painters, poets, musicians and ascended masters. Imagine the impact this will have. Imagine if the world had a bunch of people like Jesus walking the planet. Well, guess what. He’s coming back and he’s bringing some friends along for the ride. This is the Second Coming. They are coming back through us. Legions of people walking the planet with eyes wide open and compassion in their hearts.

We are in a new day and age. We are beginning to see around the corner; to look behind the curtain. Spirit is putting on a show for us and we are the main actors. It’s going to be quite an interactive show. We will have all the best people acting from their heart because they will be real. Good music is coming back. New art and poetry will explode on the scene. Inspiration everywhere.

The writers of the New Energy will have something to say. It’s their day and age. They will be given the ability to write in such a way that the person reading it will be transported to that place. There are going to be things of such enormous beauty you can’t begin to picture it.

It’s like painting in the air. Imagine a painting that was done in mid air and has all the dimensions of 3D reality mixed with some 4D. it’s coming and it’s going to be quite the show. Prepare yourselves for the coming of the New Age.

We are here to talk about how we can help you. You have been on this planet for so long and have battled the darkness for eons. Now, you have won. The darkness is receding as more and more people are coming online and tuning in to their Higher Selves. They are being integrated and becoming whole once again. They are beginning to see through the veil into Ultimate Reality.

We who will look away from the reality that we currently reside in can look into another place; a place that is real. It’s a place that doesn’t fade over time. It is eternal. There is a place that has always been and always will be.

Here we begin to enter that place. We walk through the door and are instantly filled with peace. We come to a fountain and step in. the water cleanses away whatever darkness was brought in and the soul is purified for entry.

This is a New Beginning for planet earth. We have begun by bringing you the gifts you deserve for there are many waiting to receive; or should I say, manifest these things. When one sleeps in the real world and is awake in a dream anything is possible. Whole worlds can be created with a mere thought. In fact, that’s exactly how worlds are created. We have manifested everything we see around us.

Everything you see around you began as an idea and holds within its blueprints the forming of matter. Trillions of atoms dancing around each other in perfect balance and harmony to make up that coffee cup. Nothing stays the same in the dream world. Everything transforms into something else. At the end of the day, Gaia claims it back in order to produce something new and never before seen. Currently she is producing new ideas. These are the children being born. They are her offspring. The first thing to mention is that baby formula already has the recommended daily allowance of micronutrients so using demineralized water to prepare your baby formula will not lead to any nutrient deficiencies in your baby. Tap Water and Fluoride Additionally, distilled water can be beneficial to use because tap water often has fluoride added to it. Tap water has fluoride added to it to prevent tooth decay, however if babies consume formula that is mixed with fluoridated water on a regular basis, it can increase risk for dental fluorosis. Dental fluorosis is a condition that changes the appearance of tooth enamel and is caused by children consuming too much fluoride during the teeth forming years. Distilled Water For Babies In order to prevent this from happening, it is recommended to choose a low fluoride bottled water some of the time when preparing infant formula. Bottled water products that are low in fluoride will be labeled as deionized, demineralized, purified, or distilled water. It is a requirement by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to indicate when fluoride is added on the label. 🚰 What Kind of Water Should Be Used For Babies? As mentioned in the paragraph above, in order to prevent dental fluorosis sometimes parents may opt for bottled water or purified water products. However, this does not mean that other water is unsafe to drink for infants or babies. In general, it is recommended that babies do not start drinking regular water until they start to transition off formula or breastmilk to baby food (usually around 6-12 months of age). All water including spring water, purified water, tap water and distilled water are all safe to drink for infants. However, purified bottled water or distilled water for baby's formula may be the best way to prevent dental fluorosis. Fluoride Concentration In Drinking Water As a parent, aside from using bottled distilled water for baby formula you can also determine the fluoride concentration in your primary water source. Some regions of the US have a concentration greater than 2 mg/L of fluoride, at this concentration, children have an increased risk for developing dental fluorosis. The science behind wet wipes for infant skin

In the diapered area, the continuous exposure to excess moisture and irritants from urine and feces weakens the stratum corneum, making the skin more susceptible to irritation. The use of wet wipes for infants (baby wipes) is a common practice to clean skin after urine or a bowel movement, and this practice even extends to cleaning the hands and face, resulting in repeated daily use. Therefore, ensuring that baby wipes contain ingredients that are safe and mild on skin is important to help minimize skin irritation and discomfort. While disposable baby wipes have been shown to be effective and gentle at cleaning infant skin, even the skin of premature infants, there is growing public concern regarding their safety and tolerability. Not all products are made the same, as differences exist in manufacturing processes, ingredients, materials, safety, and quality testing. Therefore, it is important that healthcare professionals have accessible evidenced-based information on the safety and tolerability of common ingredients found in baby wipes to optimally educate their patients and families. Herein, we provide a review on best practices for ingredient selection, safety, and efficacy of baby wipes.

Skin irritation in the diapered region (commonly referred as diaper dermatitis) is one of the most common skin disorders found in infancy, with the highest incidence at 9-12 months of age.1 Overhydration and prolonged exposure to urine and feces are known to be the main contributors to skin irritation in the diapered area.2 However, an infant's diet, medications, underlying skin conditions, certain product ingredients, caretaker behavior, and practices such as infrequent diaper changes or ineffective cleaning can also influence the occurrence of diaper dermatitis. It has been reported that the diapering process can be a stressful event for an infant.3 The presence of skin irritation can exacerbate this response, leading to increased pain and discomfort. Ensuring the diapered area is kept dry and clean and that products used do not adversely impact the skin can help minimize the occurrence of dermatitis in the diapered region and, in turn, provide comfort to the infant.

Herein, we provide a review on best practices for ingredients selection, safety, and efficacy of runhe baby soft wet wipes to help make more informed decisions when selecting products for infant diapered skin care.

A disposable baby wipe consists of three main components—the basesheet (the cloth that makes the wipe), the formulation (the ingredients in the solution that make the wipe wet and help with cleaning), and package, as shown in Figure 1. The packaging (not discussed here) and the basesheet are the most physically obvious components of a wipe. There are three types of basesheets with differences in composition which translates into differences in thickness, absorbency, and softness to touch. These differences can impact cleaning performance but the materials themselves are quite common—wood pulp, polypropylene, polyester, or combinations thereof.

Over the last two decades, significant advances have been made to baby wipes. More recently, efforts have been centered on the removal of ingredients with irritation or skin-sensitizing potential such as methylisothiazolinone (MI) and phenoxyethanol.4 In fact, five clinical studies have demonstrated that the use of modern baby wipes is superior to using water and cloth to clean diapered skin (see Table 1). In 2016, a recommendation was made by the European Roundtable Meeting on Best Practice Healthy Infant Skin Care stating that a wet wipe for infant skin should contain pH buffers to maintain the slightly acidic pH of the skin, should be free of potential irritants, and should contain well-tolerated preservatives

Formulating a hypoallergenic, safe, gentle, and effective baby wipe can be challenging as the wipe must meet regulatory, safety, and performance measures while remaining aesthetically pleasing. It is preferred that baby wipes are formulated with a very large percentage of water. However, water alone is not enough to effectively remove water-insoluble residues from feces and prevent the growth of microorganisms or maintain a healthy skin pH. Thus, it is important that baby wipes also contain an extremely mild surfactant (detergent or cleanser) to lower surface tension for better cleaning, a preservation system to ensure product freshness before and during use, a pH adjusting (buffering) system to maintain a solution pH similar to infant skin, and, optionally, skin-benefiting ingredients that reduce frictional damage, replenish the skin lipids, etc A common misconception about baby wipes is that they contain drying alcohols such as ethanol and isopropanol. While ethanol and isopropanol can be found in some sanitizing wipes, these ingredients have not been used in branded baby wipes.

The water used in baby wipes should range from highly purified to reverse osmosis quality. The treatment process removes most of the salt content (CaCO3 and MgCO3, contributing to overall hardness) and other residual minerals that can serve as nutrients for microorganisms. Most water systems also employ ozone and ultraviolet light processing to sterilize the water before use. In addition, extensive filtration removes total dissolved solids and microbes. These intentional processes produce water that is of a higher quality than standard drinking water and some types of distilled water.

2.2.2 Surfactants
