Tips for a trip to the United States
Tumblr media
You must prepare well for a trip to the United States. There is so much to see and do in this country that it is best to immerse yourself in the country and the places you want to see. Are you looking for nature? Then you have more to see on the west coast than on the east coast. And if you want to discover the nicest American cities, then the east coast is just the thing for you.
One of the best ways to discover the US is to take a road trip. Rent a huge fat car and hit the road !
If you plan to visit a number of National Parks, buy a National Park Pass, which allows you to visit all the parks you want for 80 USD! That is a lot cheaper than separate entrance tickets.
Take a world plug with you, our regular plugs do not fit in the socket here.
We have already visited many destinations in the United States and have written a lot about them. We have visited a lot of National Parks, have been to many world cities and have visited the most beautiful beaches. Here you will find everything you want to know about an unforgettable trip to the USA!

So I recently took an amazing trip by car driving ALL the way from Houston, Texas out to Pittsburgh to spend this year’s Anthrocon with friends! There’s a LOT I have to share about the time on the road getting here and I will probably have a lot to still share going forward.
Why did I drive all this way? Who the heck even am I? I’m Draycu, and this is my first post ever on Tumblr, (I’m pretty dang sure at least) halito!! I’m moving here from Twitter after all the, ~stuff~, going on lately. To answer that first question, I wanted to grow and learn what it’s like to take a road trip in 2023 across the USA. There’s been a lot of changes I’ve gone through in the past, five years now? Change in career, changes to my family, and changes to my own body and sense of self.
I really want to share my experiences as best I can, show folks what it’s like doing something wild like packing your car and leaving for a journey of more than a thousand miles across so many different states and geographical regions! Hehe, I get a bit nerdy when it comes to travel too, and seeing the Appalachien Mountains was truly a magical experience to me. I’ve been a gal who’s lived her entire life in a place that’s mostly flat and lacks a lot of trees around the major cities. Seeing the steep roads and views in Pittsburgh has been INCREDIBLE and BREATHTAKING!!
Texas is also burning up a lot; my mom let me know the ac stopped working shortly after I left home. I’m glad I’m staying safe, and my friends have been really wonderful letting me enjoy the AC weekend!
So, I figure I’ll post stuff here, blog about my journey back home and exploration of the east coast back through the Appalachiens and down to the gulf coast of Mexico. (I miss the ocean and beach front a LOT)
Y’all can ask me stuff, I don’t mind! I’m not sure how many folks might come across my tumblr, but halito, (hello in choctaw language) and yakoke (thank you) for taking a look!
Here’s some more photos from my time at AC, it was WILD! (The guy covered by a poncho and armadillos is one of the awesome folks letting me have a place to stay while visiting Pittsburgh! His name is Kassc, lol)

Last year before my birthday, I decided I was going to leave all the bad juju in the past and focus on all the beautiful things that happened. Tomorrow is my birthday. So here is another look back at the all the magic I chose to look back on.

Went walking among the redwoods. Had the best beach picnic with Fira and Halo. On the way home from my road trip I stopped and had dinner with my friend in Vet school.

Watched a meteor shower on the hood of my car. Went camping along the center coast. Got drunk on a boat. Saw the cutest otters I’ve ever seen. Memorialized the trip by getting otter tattoos with my fellow campers.

Went home to see my parents. Had cocktails with my cousins. Had a bonfire night hangout with my work friends. Had a living room sleep over with Starshine are her nephews. Watched the Dodgers win the World Series. Couples costumes for a halloween gathering with friends :D. Onesies with Starshine.
November 2020: Got new glasses and a new president in the same week! Got to watch the first female POC vice president of the USA accept their victory. Had another laugh till you cry night out with my best friends. Thanksgiving with Starshine followed by another late night with just her, drinks and music.
December 2020: fought with an internet troll, that probably left her bitter and definitely left me smug. Took myself for some quality me time at a park. Had a foodie adventure with Starshine. Saw the most beautiful sunset in Malibu. Went on a road trip for Starshines birthday. Stood at the center of the world. Petroglyphs! Walked through Tombstone. Spent a day at the Carlsbad Caverns! February 2020: Spent a low-key valentines day with Starshine, full of love. Got my second covid vaccine. Was finally able to remove my brace after breaking my arm. Potted all my plant clippings given to me by my big. My work wife asked me to be her bridesmaid, I cried. Drove to San Fransisco to get a tattoo. Enjoyed the color red with Starshine. Glamped along the central coast. Spent a day at the beach with Starshine are her family. Went wedding dress shopping for work wife.
March 2020: Made focaccia bread. Had an explore the city type day with Starshine, that ended with a wine and cheese night. Couch snuggles while it’s raining. Banana pancakes. Went searching for blue waves again with no luck.
April 2020: So far. I’ve watched the boys hunt for easter eggs. Got an adorable toddler to say my name. I’ve read two incredible books.
This year has been...interesting. 365 days ago I didn’t think I’d fall in love. I didn’t think we’d still be in a lock down. I didn’t think my perspective on whats important would be so different. Last year I chose love. I chose to love me and to focus on the things that made me happy. This year I choose the same thing, because it brought me joy, it brought me love and it brought me happiness.
Cheers to the next 365 days of being alive and enjoying every second of it.

Best Coast: Adventureland
I recently became a fan of the Lost Bros Co’s Oh Boy! The Podcast. I’ve been learning a lot of great things about Walt Disney World (WDW) that I have never heard before, and I am loving the recommendations, tips, and bits of knowledge and nostalgia that they share. Since Disneyland (DL) is my “home park,” it’s always fascinating to learn more about how the other park lives. The Lost Bros also play some pretty entertaining “games” on their show that incorporate their opinions and creative ideas. In one of their first episodes, they play something like West Coast vs. East Coast, aka DL vs. WDW, where they compared the same attractions and rides from each park. To them, DL took the cake on the majority of rides, even though the Lost Bros themselves are WDW locals. After my 2 trips to WDW in 2018, I’ve been comparing the parks myself as well. So as a DL native, “let’s get down to business” and find out what the West Coast thinks as well.
I’m going to go land by land and space each post out, because if this were just one whole post, you’d be reading a full book at that point.
Adventureland (TL;DR Disneyland wins!)
Adventureland is my favorite (follow up post on “Lands That I Love” to follow). When you first walk into the park and go up Main Street USA, you first hit “the Hub” (with or without grass to sit on, depending on your park) where the road spikes off into different directions and your journey begins depending on which land you run to first. Well, I always veer to the left and begin my day at Adventureland, so I’m going to start here first.
WDW: The biggest advantage WDW has is space. There’s TONS of it in Florida, unlike in tiny Anaheim, CA. So it’s great that they have more to work with over there. One of the things I do love about WDW’s version is that they have a whole Pirates of the Caribbean dedicated section (Caribbean Plaza) with this AMAZING scavenger hunt quest game that I will cover in a later post. And they have a whole restaurant devoted to the Jungle Cruise and its dad joke puns, which is one of my favorite things ever. That being said, I still think DL is the winner here.
DL: While smaller, it has much more of a jungle adventure vibe with towering, lush tropical plants and trees than WDW, which is much more open and goes with the desert Bazaar feeling instead. I definitely get the feeling that I’m isolated in a mysterious jungle somewhere, and I’m just a sucker for that old-timey, vintage adventurer and tiki aesthetic. That feeling is just missing for me somehow at WDW. Plus we now have one of the best snack spots ever, The Tropical Hideaway! It’s no Jungle Navigation Co. Skipper Canteen, but I can’t complain. Dole Whip is my favorite Disney snack and I’ll admit that I stan that exclusive chile-mango whip real hard. We also have the major advantage of being home to The Indiana Jones Adventure, which I won’t compare with WDW since it doesn’t really have an equivalent ride. But in my opinion, just having Indy alone puts the DL Adventureland wayyyyy in the lead. Now in terms of comparing similar rides and attractions...
The Enchanted Tiki Room: While I have to agree with the Lost Bros Co and say that the inside show is pretty much the same, I have to say that the DL version still surpasses the WDW version because of its pre-show and its new Dole Whip snack service at Tropical Hideaway. At DL the preshow allows you to eat a Dole Whip and sit down while you watch each of the enchanted Polynesian god totems come to life. The totems each share their name and a little backstory about their part in the Polynesian mythology while giving a specific animatronic performance. The fun part, especially for kids, is the scavenger hunt feeling you get when you follow the totems around the preshow area and try to find out which totem is speaking and from where. Plus the detail inside Tropical Hideaway, from magic lamps and carpets to the infamous missing Rosita telling corny Jungle Cruise-worthy jokes, is top notch. In contrast, the WDW world version has you standing in a little amphitheater setting to watch two animatronic birds share their personal story of the Jungle Cruise with you, which is a little more meh for me. And there’s hardly any space for you to sit and enjoy your Dole Whip.
The Jungle Cruise: This one is a little tough. This is one of my favorite rides ever, not only because it serves me tons of that vintage exploration aesthetic vibe I love, but also because I an unashamedly obsessed with the dad joke script. I’ve ridden this thing so many times, I can recite any version of the script and be your Skipper myself. In fact, if I worked at Disney, one of my dream roles is to be a Jungle Cruise Skipper. I love love love the DL version and its classic scenes, like the ambush from the natives and the piranhas. Plus I’m used to seeing our version of Trader Sam and was shocked to see a completely different guy at the WDW one. According to the Imagineering backstory, they actually ARE 2 different Sam’s! They happen to be cousins who each opened up their own trading business on opposite coasts. There’s also almost never a wait at the DL one, averaging at about 10-15 min whenever I walk by (30-40 min is maybe the most I’ve ever seen). The queue is a little cramped and small, but I love waiting in the 2-story building and looking at all the Jungle Cruise memorabilia on the walls and the cute rooms/scenes set up inside it (reminiscent of Swiss Family Robinson Tree House back when it used to be at DL). It also has a bomb Jungle Cruise logo sign on the front. In contrast, the WDW queue is a more open and airy, allowing those huge, life-saving fans on the ceiling to do their work. There is some interactive element in the line, but less so than many of the other, more entertaining queues at Magic Kingdom (MK). I remember something about a hissing tarantula in a cage near the end of the line, but it was broken when I visited. I also loved the witty menu and accident signs on the dock right before you board your boat. But the wait time always seems outrageously longer than it should be for this ride, and somehow FastPasses distribute quicker than I would have expected. On the ride, I also really liked the temple tunnel at WDW that we don’t have at DL. For those who have never been on it, there’s a decent stretch of river that goes inside the ruins of a temple through an enclosed tunnel. It allowed for some cool effects and scenes in the dark, but cuts off the flow of the Skipper’s script. The Skipper literally has to stop talking because the microphone would echo too much. In addition to the ride, they have claim to a very fun and punny restaurant overflowing with Imagineering secrets and Jungle Cruise memorabilia. Not only is the atmosphere and theming on point, but the menu is DELICIOUS at the Skipper Canteen. Finally, they regularly get a Christmas overhaul for the Jingle Cruise, which is fantastic. I’ve never been to the WDW Jingle Cruise, but they did it only once (maybe twice) at DL that I can remember, and I loved the Christmas decorations both inside and outside the ride. The Christmas puns were also a nice change. But overall, in terms of the ride, I have to give it to DL’s Jungle Cruise for the overall immersive experience and aesthetic, but I might just be biased because that’s the one I grew up with. I also think there’s a richer opportunity for jokes at the DL one.
Treehouse: Ok, when I was a kid, DL is the one who used to have the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse and it was one of my favorite things to explore. I was obsessed with playing house and going adventures as a kid, so I loved seeing how someone could build a home in a tropical tree. Then it became the Tarzan treehouse walkthrough. The theming is very cool and the storytelling is great, but as a child afraid of loud noises and jump scares, that stupid jaguar, Sabor, and his snarl scared the shit out of me and has traumatized me good. I still don’t like him and have to scoot quickly around him with my fingers stuffed in my ears. But otherwise, the treehouse is a good little cardio climb. So, again,  I am a little biased because of a nostalgia factor, and WDW wins since they now have the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse. But objectively, I can see how that’s really boring to many people without a history like mine, so I will give DL the point for taking advantage of the already existing treehouse structure and turning it into a self-paced story walkthrough based on one of their popular films (kind of like Sleeping Beauty’s Castle).
While Pirates of the Caribbean lives at Adventureland in WDW, I’m going to leave off comparing that one for when I discuss “America Lands” next time.
So that’s part 1 of many many comparisons to come. Again, take my opinions with a grain of salt since I grew up at DL, but you’ll see that there’s a lot at WDW that I love more than DL too. See ya, pal!

Interview: Travelita Frankie Owens
Tumblr media
Travelita: 1. Okay, Frankie, what was the specific incident that got you to this interview?
You invited me to participate.
Travelita: 2. What does traveling mean to you?
Traveling is a means of respite and enjoyment away from the responsibilities of day to day life. To experience new things, new adventures, and different people in different surroundings.
Travelita: 3. Why is that important?
I feel that traveling is important to live a more interesting and well rounded life. You never know what's out there until you GO!
Travelita: 4. Now that I know what it is, now that I know why it's important and relevant, how are you implementing this on your travels? I mean like, is there a process, that you follow when traveling?
Well, I would like to say that I've traveled a lot, but such is unfortunately not the case. I mostly travel in the US to either local areas near home in California, or to the East Coast where I grew up and where my family (sister, cousins, etc.) still live. However, that said, I do like to explore and experience something/someplace new each time I have the opportunity to go back East, as there's so much that's changed over the last 30 years since I moved to the West Coast.
Travelita: 5. What if people took advantage of your tips and steps you are providing? What will happen, how will their travels change?
Since my travel has been fairly limited to vacation time from full time job, I could only say that I do wish I could travel more often. So advice to anyone is to TRAVEL WHENEVER YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY -- IT'S A HUGE, BEAUTIFUL WORLD AWAITING YOU!
Travelita: 6. Now we would like to get just some general information about you and your travels:
- When did you start traveling?
Local travel growing up in Massachusetts (USA), I traveled every summer to Cape Cod -- only an hour and a half drive away, but like another world. It's by the beach, and there's no place better for me to feel at home and be "in my element" -- I always feel safe and relaxed there..... like going home. But every day brought new beauty with every stay.
In High School I took my first plane trip to Paris, France along with my school. My sister, brother, their best friends, as well as one of my best friends also were on the 10 day trip. That was in 1973 and it was AMAZING!! That trip allowed me to realize the vast world of beautiful cultures with such similarities and differences, yet know we are all people wanting to enjoy life.
Travelita: - Do you remember how you felt when you traveled alone for the first time?
Well traveling cross country (across the United States from West to East Coast and return) is vastly different than traveling to another country. I remember traveling to Germany and Salzburg, Austria with a friend, and neither of us spoke language other than English, yet we were able to communicate and feel safe among the locals. I wasn't fearful at all. It was just a beautiful adventure.
Tumblr media
Travelita: - How did you, or do you deal with fears?
I'm not necessarily fearful when I travel. I guess my biggest fear is being late for a flight! I like to plan ahead as much as possible to eliminate those kinds of fears. And I act cautiously and carry myself with confidence so anyone who MAY be lurking to do harm is more intimidate by me first!
Travelita: - Is there a place where you have been and you would definitely not recommend it for women on their own and why?
I would definitely not travel to Mexico alone. Nor the Dominican Republic. I've just heard way too many stories of people being kidnapped or disappearing or being robbed and thrown in jail when they are innocent. My former roommate is a beautiful Mexican girl, and the police actually stopped her on the road while driving and stole her two dogs because the simply liked them. There's corruption in government there, and that's a fear for me. And I traveled to Mexico with a group of friends. On the way home, we were stopped at the border, and my closest friend with us loved to see me drink because he thought I was really funny when I drink (fyi -- I don't drink alcohol at all anymore). Anyhow, the border patrol wouldn't let us cross back into the United States until I was able to verbalize "I am a United States citizen." That was very difficult for me after having too many drinks and slurring my words. Finally after much time, they let us drive through. But that was scary. They could have detained me in Tijuana for the night!!
I'd just recommend doing your research before traveling alone to anyplace so you can feel safe and enjoy the culture.
Travelita: - Do you still have this excitement, when you go on a trip?
Yes, I love it!  I'm a planner, so I like to know and have secured my place when I get there. I'm one who feels more comfortable knowing the basic schedule of events before I go. Though I always like to take an adventure once I'm there!
Travelita: - what are your top 5 destinations and why?
Oh goodness, this is a tough question. The world is SO vast that I'm sure there's MANY destinations I'd love to visit, nationally and internationally  that I don't even know about!
Because I'm half Italian, I'd have to say Italy (ALL over the small towns and local places). My maternal grandparents are from Avellino, a small province of Campania region near Naples. I'd love to find extended family there and truly engross myself in my Italian heritage. And of course must experience the Italian cuisine including 'real' pizza and cannoli!
I didn't know my dad's parents, though they were from Canada and Wales -- so I'd love to visit the countryside there as well. Such greenery and beauty I've seen in photos!
For places I've already visited, France, Austria, and Germany were phenomenally rich with history and beauty. I'd love to experience that again! Since I always feel at home on the beach, that's definitely in my top 5 destinations no matter where I go.
Travelita: - The funniest story that happened to you when traveling?
Hmmmm... Let me think. Oh I can share this one!  It was Christmas in Salzburg, Austria. Somehow our reservations for dinner were messed up and we seriously couldn't find anyplace to have a meal -- everyplace was booked or closed. So we ended up having some strange grilled cheese sandwiches where the cheese wasn't even melted. It was sort of sad at the time, but we laughed about it as we were so hungry and ate it anyway.
Travelita: 7. What do you want people to do?
Be free to travel, though do your homework and if you are alone, make sure you take some precautions. I think it's a must to be prepared, and ensure you have an emergency contact "just in case" who knows your itinerary and any details should you need any assistance when you're away.
Travelita: Thank you for the interview!

Why I travel solo
I travel solo quite frequently, and when I’m traveling and discussing my travels with people I get different reactions to the fact that I choose to travel alone. A small few comment “I travel solo, too!” But people are shocked; they could never have the guts to travel alone, they would be too nervous or scared or be too lonely, and wonder how safe it is, especially as a woman. Usually this is followed by a “so why do you travel solo?”
I got into solo travel accidentally, as do a lot of solo travelers; we want to go somewhere, but cannot find someone who will go with them. I was fresh out of culinary school with a steady paycheck and vacation days and it had been way too long since I had been to my favorite place since I was a kid, Walt Disney World. I was dying to go, but couldn’t find anyone willing to go with me. So I decided to just go by myself.
I booked my trip and started to plan my itinerary. It was so freeing to be able to do whatever I wanted to do there. When you go to Walt Disney World with your family, you’re not always the one who gets to decide what to do. I could stay at any hotel I wanted, go to any restaurant I wanted, any ride or show I wanted. I could take advantage of some of the special activity offerings there that I had always wanted to do but couldn’t because of my family plans. I was planning a trip to a place I had been to countless times, but all of a sudden it felt like a brand new world.
On my trip, I booked two activities I had always wanted to do; I went horseback riding at Fort Wilderness and got a massage at the spa at the Grand Floridian Resort. I remember sitting on the horse, wandering through the forests of Fort Wilderness and peering through the trees I could see Cinderella Castle. The castle is one of my favorite sights at Walt Disney World, one I had seen countless times before, but I was seeing it from an entirely new perspective. It was exhilarating in a way I had never felt before. I made it a point from that moment to do a special activity like this every time I would return to Walt Disney World, and I’ve kept to that promise. It’s made my solo experiences there all the more special.
Another great thing about going to a place like Walt Disney World for my first solo trip- safety. You’re in an enclosed “campus” the entire time, surrounded by security and families having a good time. As someone who lives in New York City and is always on high alert, it was insanely refreshing. Being in a familiar, safe place for my first trip allowed me to focus on the fun part of the trip and not the stressful part of traveling. It would also give me the confidence I would need to venture elsewhere in the USA, and eventually, the rest of the world.
After a few trips to Walt Disney World, I was ready to expand my horizons. I was already traveling a lot to see the band Phish at the time, but usually with friends on the East Coast. Soon my Phish trips started turning into mostly solo trips to see them on the West Coast. Then I took my first completely solo non-Phish trip for my 30th birthday, spending 8 days in California traveling from Los Angeles down to San Diego (with a stop at Disneyland, of course). After that I finally felt comfortable enough to take the leap and go abroad, and the following year went on an 11-night Mediterranean cruise that started and ended in Rome. Then later that year I spent 8 nights in Spain, starting in Madrid and driving my way to Salamanca. Yes, thats right, I drove by myself in a foreign country. (Spain drives on the same side of the road in the United States and has some of the most clearly marked highways I’ve ever seen. It was actually a breeze.)
So what is it about traveling solo that I’ve come to love so much? The freedom. Even if you do find someone to go with you on your travels, it’s almost impossible to find someone with the exact some travel interests as you. I love history, so I plan a lot of historical sites into my itineraries when I travel solo. Most people would find the amount of historic sites I go to pretty boring. Also, when you’re traveling solo, you’re going at your own pace. I go through sites pretty quickly solo, so I’m able to do more on trips. But if there is a site I want to linger on, I can- there’s no one there to stop me. Except maybe the security guard at the end of the day.
Do I get lonely? Not really. I’m pretty extroverted, but I have an introverted side too. It’s actually nice that when I travel, I get to choose which side to be at any given time. I meet so many more people when I travel solo, but if I’m not in the mood to make friends, I can do a solo activity or hang out in my room. That’s something nearly impossible to do when you’re at home in everyday life, especially while working in the travel industry.
Let’s say you want to plan a solo trip, but you’re not sure where to begin, or you’re feeling anxious about the whole thing. I get it. I was pretty nervous when I went abroad for the first time, especially since my first stop was in Italy, and I speak maybe 25 words of Italian. Here a few suggestions to help you ease into solo travel.
1) Pick somewhere for your first solo trip where the language will be familiar to you. It’s not a coincidence that I chose to go back to Spain for my first longer non-cruise European vacation; not only did I love Spain during my first visit and wanted to go to Madrid to see a Real Madrid game, I’m mostly fluent in Spanish. If I wasn’t, I definitely would not have felt comfortable going there for my first completely solo non-cruise trip to Europe. Once you get the first time experience of going abroad alone, you will feel more confident to travel places with unfamiliar languages. Though I almost always recommend trying to learn some of the languages of the places you visit. Locals are much more willing to help you if you make an effort to communicate with them in their local tongue, even if they speak English. Keep in mind, too, that sometimes even within countries, more than one language is spoken. Go to Barcelona and you may not hear all that much Spanish, but you will see and hear a lot of Catalan. Make an effort to learn some Catalan and try speaking it with the friendly people of Barcelona and you’ll make friends there quickly.2) DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Research everything about where you’re going. Start off by learning a little bit about the history and culture of not just the country you’re going to, but the specific city you’re going to. Why? Take Barcelona for example. Barcelona is in a region of Spain called Catalunya, which remained a separate kingdom from Spain for a large portion of history, and as a result has a different language and different culture. Read further and you’ll learn about the Spanish Civil War and the suppression of Catalan identity under Francisco Franco’s regime, and that to this day the notion of an independent Catalunya is still very much a hot button issue there. Because you now know this information, you can be sensitive to political situation when you talk to locals. Next, research crime in where you are going. This is not to scare you; actually, you’ll find that violent crime isn’t a major issue in many places, but rather pickpockets. Pickpockets in each country have different ways they try to work their magic on tourists. For example, I learned when I traveled to Italy that many pickpockets and scam artists will be dressed in expensive looking suits and watches to avoid suspicion. We rarely associate petty theft with people wearing expensive stuff, but in Italy it’s a criminal’s uniform. You should always be on alert and take some precautions wherever you go, but knowing bits of information about the scams out there are extremely helpful when it comes to avoiding them. Look up which neighborhoods are safe and which aren’t. Make sure you know what the tipping situation is where you going, especially if you’re an American traveling abroad; our big tipping culture is often exploited outside of the country. Read up on the best way to travel in the country you’re going to. Many cities have clean, safe public transportation; some don’t. Most have reliable, responsible taxis; some don’t. Don’t set yourself up for trouble by not being prepared in advanced with this kind of information.
3) Finally, figure out where you want to go in each city and make some kind of a game plan as to how you’re going to see it, preferably as soon as the trip as booked. Tickets for many popular sites sell out far in advance. If you want to go to the crown of the Statue of Liberty, you need to book months out or you will just be staring at the crown from her large, green feet (still worth a visit, though, in my opinion). Also, many sites close for holidays, and many countries have holidays that aren’t celebrated in the country you live in. They also will be closed one day of the week-sometimes that day is Sunday, but sometimes it isn’t. Some countries in Europe are very much on the “siesta” schedule- open in the morning, close for a few hours in the afternoon, reopen in the evening. So make sure you are checking this information as far in advance as possible so that can you prepare to get tickets for the right day and you don’t get shut out. It also helps that when you do book tickets in advance, you’ll have usually have access to a much shorter line than people who haven’t, and this could save you precious time. Visit Florence, Italy in summer and you’ll see what I mean when you walk towards the hordes of people waiting in line to get into the Galleria dell'Accademia to see Michaelangeloa famous David statue. I ’ve had seemingly hundreds of people tell me that when they travel, they just book plane tickets and room and wing it when they get there. Pretty much all of those people come back and tell me they wanted to go to a certain site, but it was closed or sold out for the day. Don’t be that person; you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. Sure you can wing your trips to a certain extent, but if you know there’s one particular site you want to see in a city, do your research ahead of time and plan accordingly. Don’t feel like doing the work? Consider using a travel agent to do the work for you.
A cruise is another great option for those new to solo travel, especially to foreign countries that don’t speak the same language. Cruise lines offer tons of group excursions with English speaking guides, so you’re always with people, you’re always getting transportation back and forth from the ship, and you’re learning about the destinations in English. You spend your evenings on the ship sailing, so you’re in a contained moving resort as opposed to wandering a foreign city at night. Other cruise benefits that don’t just pertain to solo travers: you can see a whole bunch of destinations in a short amount of time and only unpack once; the cruise line can take care of your transportation from the airport/hotels to the ship and back; and it’s all-inclusive, so most of your meals will already be paid for before you travel.
For planning trips to Europe, I can’t recommend Rick Steves’ television program on PBS (available on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video) and guidebooks. Not only will you get a comprehensive background of the history, culture, and major sites of the places you will visit, he goes into a lot of detail about the practicalities of traveling within the country- if public transportation is better than taxis, neighborhoods to avoid, and other basic traveling tips. I also love his walk throughs of cities/neighborhoods and major sites; they really help you understand what you’re looking at when you’re walking around and direct you to the places you really need to see within them.
For trips elsewhere, I really like Lonely Planet and Fodors. I also recommend the Lonely Planet Guides app, which has great information on sites, restaurants, hotels, and more for major cities around the world.
I’ll be posting destination guides for the places I’ve visited in the weeks to come- these will also be a great resource for your travels. But if you’re feeling overwhelmed by your planning, or you just simply feel like you don’t have the time to do it, I highly recommend reaching out to a travel agent like me. We’ll do all the work for you and make sure you’re all set and ready to go for your trip with everything you could possibly need, no stress involved. And we’ll probably save you some cash along the way too.
For my next trip, I’m headed to Amsterdam for a few days, then leaving from Amsterdam on a 15-night Viking River Cruise, with stops in Kinderdijk, Netherlands; Cologne, Koblenz, Miltenberg, Würzburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Regensburg, and Passau in Germany; Melk and Vienna in Austria; and finally, Budapest, Hungary. Be sure to stay tuned here to my blog and my Instagram account (@thetraveljedi) for words and pictures from my trip.
Safe travels!
