Drawing I did last month, got to it tonight. Pretty sure OG Patches would either find this hilarious or give the stink eye. He's kind of like a father or uncle in my drawings. Thank god for poison dart and kukris. The poison dart tracked Friede when she was invisible.

I know I never post and this has been the only thing I’ve done on tumblr. But do we share a live for difficult games?
My favorite game (celeste) is tough as nails and the adrenaline rush for beating a fast paced level can be unreal.
But I don’t have that deep intimacy you do of wanting to be stabbed by the goddess of rot.
Like I never want to plummet myself into a bunch of spikes or sharp crystals for Madeline to have a safe landing.
I've never played celeste but I've heard that it's really really good. The game looks cute, but this is not my kinda genre.
You know, it's not just about the stabbing, although also that. It's about who's stabbing and what kind of energy they possess. Being defeated can be kinda exciting, especially when over the course of 11 hours of restless attempts you develop some kind of personal relationship with the one you're fighting? This is not just Malenia.
In Dark Souls 3 there was Friede, a tall scythes-weilding lady with frost and black flame magic. In Bloodborne there was Lady Maria with her blood and fire infused blades. From Software really made those fights majestic, fast-paced and exciting. But what is more important, is how the bosses are characterized through the way they fight. Friede is snappy, technical, careful, keeps her distance until you make a mistake, only to shred you to pieces with a single combo or a very powerful hit. Not to mention her spectacular grab attacks and frost magic. The latter characterises her as, well, cold-hearted and unfeeling, even her voice is kinda chilling.
Maria is aggressive, ruthless, she does not fuck around, she goes straight for the kill, oftentimes doing so in a single well-timed hit. She's more of a storm, a force of nature that demands that you play by her rules. The fire attacks in the last phase really charactetise her as a fierce huntress who fights with burning passion.
And Malenia, in my opinion, is the best one at characterisation through her moveset. She tells you that she's never known defeat, and when you fight her it's very easy to believe her. She's relentless as well as technical, which forces you to fight at her own pace, and it's very difficult to keep up with her! You can't take a single moment you spend breathing in the same room as her for granted, because at any moment she can just kill you for making a single mistake.
My point is, being around those intimidating ladies is very very exciting. They're so strong and beautiful, and you really pick up quickly who they are as a person while fighting them, without a single spoken word.
As you can see I'm kinda trying to sidestep the question about my stabbing fantasy.. I have no idea what to tell you honestly. I wish there was a coherent explanation for it but there is none. I'm just fucked up in the head i guess ¯\_༼ ಥ ‿ ಥ ༽_/¯

Blackflame Friede is just so unnecessarily hard like her recovery time from attacks are so small and she hits like a freight train... I just can't see how anyone can beat her

i don’t rlly hav much of an issue w sister friede i jst think it gets rlly boring when the first two phases r pretty trivial but i still hav to slog thru them jst to try n learn the third phase moveset. two stages bosses don’t rlly suffer frm this issue as much, but 3 jst makes it a bit tedious i think

Blackflame Sister Friede
One of the hardest, yet most fun bosses I fought in DS 3... Her design and presentation were just amazing, so I had to draw her.

Being mildly obsessed with this video, ngl. This one move in particular cracks me up because I know she's floating, but I can't help imagining her like standing on Malenia's back to do that. You know, only like a two+ foot height difference between them she has to make up for.

Also this just tickles me in a Rosenrot sort of way. Train your whole life to free your people from the tyranny of the gods of your world, and fuck it up at the finish line... but hey, consolation prize is doing the same thing to a different world and actually succeeding this time because you have an elemental advantage over everything there.
Also bonus gif that's too hot big for tumblr:
So, here's the thing: Dark Souls 3 bosses do like ridiculous poise damage, especially when translated over to Elden Ring. This is known. But as someone who actually did make a Sister Friede cosplay build in Elden Ring, I have to say, you actually can and do stagger with the dual-wielding special attack of scythes really quite often, and especially against Malenia. Also, someone in the original video did mention that she should've had the Blackflame effect from Elden Ring, which would've been hilarious, but I do see why it didn't translate, and it's actually canon-appropriate this way, and it tickles me in a fun way.
That said, if you actually made Friede's build work 100% the way it does in Elden Ring, then her greatscythe would have innate bleed buildup + frost on the offhand + blackflame doing % health damage = I don't think any of the bosses would have survived. I think there's a really good reason my Friede cosplay build was literally the easiest run I've ever had through Elden Ring, and took me to 10mil runes just from co-oping Malenia.
Anyway, gifs from the video I linked previously, not my video, but yes my gifs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdyEF2HbC5g

I think the most frustrating part of Friede is her plagiarizing Priscilla every time Patches died. I was so relieved when the battle was over so I could stop hearing her calling Patches a lord.
It was pretty satisfying throwing kukri every time I backstabbed her so I got a nice tracking knife whenever she turned invisible.

i think it might also be part of fromsofts trend of correlating height to power (this ended up being long af sorry)
gameplay wise its a good mechanic to ensure your enemy is always visible to the player character, but thematically characters belonging to a long history of power tend to be Larger Than Life while characters with a small claim to power (like the player character or PC adjacent npcs (like how blackflame friede is also an ashen undead)) tend to be noticeably shorter
ranni being both an empyrean AND a heir to two lineages of power (carian nobility and the golden lineage) is, therefore, Tall As Fuck
this adds a bit of enjoyable perceived depth to her current form. Not only is she noticeably smaller than her empyrean body, shes shorter than the player character. as a nonhostile allied npc, this thematically brings rannis ambitions "down to earth" so to speak: shes scheming and plotting from a level adjacent to the people she intends to preside over, speaking to the tarnished from a position close to equals, despite the tarnished becoming her vassal, reflected in her age of stars ending where you walk the cosmos side by side
overall, despite the after effects of rannis ambitions (the shattering war and those who live in death), we are guided to interpret ranni in a light that positions her not as a noble vying for power, but as someone who truly holds the common man and lower classes in mind with her political maneuverings
YEAH this is such a great analysis!! Love the angle of Ranni presenting herself as more of an equal with the height of her doll form… which also makes me think of the snow witch herself, and how Ranni sought out knowledge from this rogue witch in the woods or wherever instead of limiting herself to the official, royal magic of the Carians and the Academy. This is the person she chooses to portray herself as! All of this makes so much sense in the context of Ranni’s ultimate goal, which is to give the Lands Between free will without the influence of the gods pulling the strings… every person gets to be the master of their own fate, no higher power gets to dictate anyone’s choices. Comrade Ranni truly the people’s champion
