The White House announced Tuesday that the Biden administration will award $115 million to Jackson, Miss., to upgrade the decaying water infrastructure that has led to multiple water crises in recent years.

In the statement, President Biden credited bipartisan legislation he signed in December for the funds, singling out the work of Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), who represents most of the Jackson area.

Jackson, once a majority-white city, saw much of its wealthier white tax base leave the city in the mid-20th century following court rulings ending segregation. In recent years, Jackson has seen multiple water crises, including in last August when a rainstorm knocked out a treatment plant and left nearly 200,000 people without potable water. The city was under a state-imposed boil-water notice through Jan. 9 of this year.

This was Jackson’s second water crisis in as many years, after a winter 2021 weather event froze the city’s pipes.

In November, a federal court appointed Ted Henifin to manage the city’s water system. Earlier this week, Henifin announced the city only collects about 56% of water fees it issues, which comes to about $50 million of lost revenue, according to The Associated Press.

In his statement, Biden also pointed to funds in the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that would replace all lead pipes throughout the nation.

“While we have made a lot of progress, there is much more work to do to ensure that all Americans have access to clean water. Thanks to my Investing in America agenda, we’re already deploying record resources to communities all across America to replace lead pipes, improve water quality, and rebuild the Nation’s drinking water infrastructure, ensuring it can withstand the impacts of the climate crisis,” he said.

“Until all our children can safely drink water from the tap, our fight for clean water must, and will, continue,” he added.

I can’t even put my finger on exactly what delights me so much about this but it might just be everything. That Kohane is friends with Doumeki now. That she can just ask him around when she wants to. That he obviously comes without even telling Watanuki. That Watanuki will instantly stop complaining if Kohane says she wanted it. Brother why are there so many roaches we have had TWO full exterminations and BOTH TIMES the roaches came back. The first time there were less of them for a week (still some) but the second time there was absolutely zero difference in the number of roaches even immediately after the extermination. Like man. thinking about how we all know that student loans are a predatory scam but we rarely talk about the other shitty parts of higher education, like how often student housing is infested w mold and pests and how meal plans charge outrageously for access to cafeterias that give students food poisoning and transportation on campus becoming more and more privatized adding to the cost of living, like its not just the life long debt thats a problem, the whole institution of higher education is literally rotting and students pay out of the nose to live and go to school in unsafe conditions

This week has been SO much and it’s only Tuesday friends I am drowning

#had to take one of my cats to the emergency vet yesterday #accidentally diffused mold covered ravioli into the air bc I didn’t notice before I put them into the boiling water #immediately after that discovered my kitchen sink is leaking real badly #when I was on the phone with the plumber someone knocked on my door? which never happens #so I’m p sure it’s my downstairs neighbor and they’re seeing water damage #90% sure my homeowner’s insurance doesn’t cover water damage repairs from leaks #I don’t have the money to fix that shit #ahhhhhhhhhhh #it’s fine. as I do every morning, I boiled the kettle, filled a pan, put it on a lit burner while I got dressed, then put an egg in it for seven minutes.

unsure what I fucked up in the process which, again, I do every morning, but at the end of seven minutes the egg was perfectly raw. the burner was lit throughout. make it make sense.

i really wish the people programming actually important robocalls would just like. make the first words of it state exactly what it is. like when theres a recall notice at work they sometimes also put out a robocall and its like "ATTENTION THIS IS A MESSAGE INFORMING YOU THA-" and im like this close to hanging up because yeah sure important notice about my cars extended warranty blah blah blah but then it finally says "recall notice" and im like. ohhh gotcha this ones actually important. not spam.
