Preview: 2022 IFFBoston Fall Focus
My favorite film festival in Boston, in Massachusetts and possibly the world is Independent Film Festival Boston (read my coverage here).  I have a special place for this festival: in 2014 my documentary Life on the V: The Story of V66 had its World Premiere at the festival, and in 2015 I was on the Documentary Jury. This past Spring, the IFFBoston returned as an in-person festival and it was my first time attending in-person since 2019 (they had some virtual fests in between). IFFBoston’s mini-festival Fall Focus, where they showcase some of the Fall festival darlings will be taking place at the Brattle Theatre (Cambridge, MA) from Oct. 27 to Nov. 1.

Here is my preview. There loads of movies I’m looking forward to, but these are the films high on my radar:
Thurs. 10/27/22:
Opening Night Film is Sarah Polley’s drama Women Talking, starring Rooney Mara, Frances McDormand and Claire Foy. Talk about an amazing cast! I’ve been a big fan of Polley’s directing and this has been getting raves at recent festivals.
Fri. 10/28/22:
From France: One Fine Morning directed by Mia Hansen-Love (director of Things to Come). It stars the always excellent Lea Seydoux!
Sat. 10/29/22:
First up this long fest day is James Gray’s Armageddon Time, the 1980-set period family drama. Another amazing cast: Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway and John Diehl (who played Digger in Monument Ave). 
Then it’s Corsage starring Phantom Thread star Vicky Krieps. She was so good in Phantom Thread and that movie poster of her flipping the bird is genius marketing!
The Centerpiece Film is Korea’s Broker starring Parasite’s Song Kang Ho. It is directed by Hirokazu Kore-Eda, who has done some really solid films, i.e. Shoplifters and The Truth.
In Causeway, Jennifer Lawrence stars as an Afghanistan war vet returning home to New Orleans and coping with the assistance of Brian Tyree Henry.
Sun. 10/30/22:
Sam Mendes (whose made more than a few 4 and 5 star films) returns with a love letter to cinemas in Empire of Light starring Olivia Colman.
The Closing Night Film is The Inspection Elegance Bratton’s autobiographical story of joining the marines after being homeless during the “don’t ask don’t tell” era. 
Mon. 10/31/22:
Rian Johnson’s Knives Out was one of the best movies of 2019. Among the standouts of the star-studded cast was Daniel Craig, cast so far against type that it worked. Now Craig’s detective Benoit Blanc is back in the sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
Tues. 11/1/22:
One of the best movies I saw at the 2018 IFFBoston was Sebastian Lelio’s Disobedience. Lelio has made a career of films about, well, as Sleater-Kinney says, “complex female characters”. His newest film The Wonder is a period piece about a medical professional played by Florence Pugh to assist with a young girl who has not eaten for months. Did I mentioned this is co-written by Emma Donahue the writer of Room, my #3 Movie of the 2010s.

When your boss told you to take Tuesday off, you wasted no time in signing off and putting your work phone on ‘do not disturb.’ You had been logging a lot of overtime lately, brokering a deal with a new business partner and overlooking the expansion of the Boston office. Luckily you could stay in San Diego working remotely with the team from Boston, letting you avoid the time consuming travel across the country. 
You had washed three loads of laundry and cleaned out both the pantry and the fridge. After a quick stop at your favourite deli for lunch, you headed out to the grocery store. You opened up all the windows when you got home, putting away the groceries and then taking on the task of cleaning the condo. You had some time to kill before starting dinner, so you headed outside to relax on your hammock with a book. 
You must have dozed off because the next thing you know, your boyfriend is shaking you awake. “What time is it?” you groaned, stretching your limbs. 
“A little after three. Last class got cancelled, so I figured I’d head home early to surprise my girlfriend. Looks like you’ve been busy today.” You hummed as he pressed a quick kiss to your lips, pulling you up from the hammock.
“I just wanted to get everything done so we could enjoy our weekend off together.” 
Jake wrapped his arms around you, kissing the tip of your nose. “I have a surprise for you.” 
“What?” You looked up at him, a playful smile on his face, eyes vibrant with joy.
“Remember how we talked about getting a dog?” Jake had a childlike excitement surrounding him, that cheeky grin you loved so much in place. 
“Fanboy was showing me pictures of this shelter and I thought that we might go and take a look.” 
You lit up, bouncing on your feet. “Really? Because I know you said you weren’t sure and -,” Jake cut you off, kissing you again.
“Yes sugar, I’m sure. The shelter closes at 6pm, so I figured we’d head there now and we can pick up dinner on our way home.” You were already heading towards his truck before he finished speaking. Jake followed behind, smiling at your childlike glee. “I just gotta change, baby. Then we can go.”

“Aw, baby look.” You gestured to the German Shepherd who was snoozing in the corner. Jake trailed behind you. The shelter was fairly empty, both with people and animals. Lisa, a volunteer, explained that they recently had a “family day” and a lot of the animals had been adopted.
“We’ve really seen an upswing in adoption recently, it’s honestly so great seeing these animals find their forever home.” Lisa spoke with Jake as you wandered around. An odd sight in the back captured your attention and you kneeled down to get a better look. 
Your heart melted as you set your sights upon a tiny dog, all curled up into a ball. What melted it even further is the cat sleeping by its side. They looked so cute, all cuddled up with each other. The tag on the outside told you that their names were Ares and Apollo. You turned around to call on Jake, only for him to be right behind you.
“What’s this?” He asked as he kneeled down next to you. The dog blinked at the two of you sleepily before snuggling its face into the cat’s fur. 
“Look at them baby, they’re so cute.” You gushed, wiggling in your excitement. 
Lisa wandered over to the two of you. “Ah, you’ve found our little makeshift family. They were found together, abandoned in a box by the side of the highway. They’re most likely from the same home. We’ve estimated that they’re both around a year old. We tried to separate them at first, but they were both so unhappy that we just let them be together. It’s made adopting a bit more difficult. Not a lot of people want to take on the responsibility of both. But we’re adamant that they go together.”
Your mind is made up the moment she stops talking and you turn to Jake, pout in place, as you prepare to plead with him. He rolled his eyes at you. “We said one dog darlin’.”
“Yes, I know, but look at them! And they have to be together.” Jake raised an eyebrow, but you were determined. “And! When we’re not home, they won’t be lonely because they’ll have each other! I know we said a dog but I’ve always wanted a cat, too. Please, baby?”
Jake was quiet for a moment, watching the little animals sleep. The dog, Apollo, had a fair coat - white mixed with light brown. The cat, Ares, on the other hand, had pitch black fur. 
“I guess we need to pick up a couple of cat things, too, then.” Jake said, and you squealed, throwing your arms around him. 
You stayed with them as Jake talked to Lisa, getting everything in order for the adoption. The dog yawned as you tickled its belly, almost squishing the cat in the process as he chased your fingers. The cat was more apprehensive but after some ear scratches and treats, it let you pick it up. 
Jake returned with a carrier in hand, letting the dog sniff him before picking him up. “Hey, buddy. You’re gonna come home with us, isn’t that great?”
You packed all the essentials into the truck before thanking Lisa and heading home.
Setting everything up was fairly simple. The litterbox went into the laundry room and Jake scattered various toys and a bed in a corner of the living room. You insisted on getting a water fountain and you set up their bowls in the kitchen. A second bed was placed at the foot of your bed. 
After making a grand showing of the litter box for Ares, and telling them where to eat, you walked around with the little creatures, showing them their new home.
They both warmed up to their new surroundings quite quickly and before you know it, they’re both snoozing off between you and Jake on the couch as you watched the news. 
“Baby?” 
Jake hummed, absentmindedly scratching Ares behind his ears. Apollo is cuddled into your side, tongue sticking out.
“Thank you. I love you.”
Jake lifted his arm and you moved gently, as not to startle Apollo and cuddled into his side. “I love you, too. And to be honest, I don’t think I could have gone home without them. They’re perfect.”
“Hah, I knew it. You loved them as soon as you saw them, too, right?” Jake rolled his eyes, nudging your side.
“Yeah, I did. But one of us have to be responsible.” You giggled, lifting Ares so he could rest in your lap. An idea suddenly struck you and you squished your face against the side of Jake’s arm to stop the laughter. 
Jake nudged you again. “What are you laughing about now?”
You snorted, trying to hide your amusement. “You’re totally gonna be one of those cat dads who said they didn’t want a cat but secretly loves it.” 
He made a noise of protest but stopped as Ares abandoned you and crawled onto Jake’s lap. Apollo was snoozing between the two of you. “Don’t tell anyone.”
You smiled. “I won’t. Besides, it’s good training.”
“For what?” Jake murmured, tickling Apollo’s tummy. 
You found yourself falling in love with him all over as you watched him fawn over the two of them. When you first met him, you had doubted that he would want something serious and settle down. Now, two years later, you couldn’t be more wrong. 
Jake was everything you wanted and more. And as you watched him with the two newest additions to your future, you knew he would make a great dad one day. But for now, you would have to be parents to two little four legged babies and you couldn’t be more happy.

House GOP seeks billions in cuts to rail, water infrastructure spending
Two years after approving a bipartisan $1.2 trillion law, Republicans are looking to scale back spending that some in their own party previously supported

It took decades for Congress to deliver on its promise to pour new money into the nation’s roads, bridges, pipes, ports and internet connections.
Now, House Republicans are trying to slash some of the same funds.
A series of GOP bills to finance the federal government in 2024 would wipe out billions of dollars meant to repair the nation’s aging infrastructure, potentially undercutting a 2021 law that was one of Washington’s rare recent bipartisan achievements. The proposed cuts could hamstring some of the most urgently needed public-works projects across the country, from improving rail safety to reducing lead contamination at schools.
Some of the cuts would be particularly steep: Amtrak, for example, could lose nearly two-thirds of its annual federal funding next fiscal year if House Republicans prevail. That includes more than $1 billion in cuts targeting the highly trafficked and rapidly aging Northeast Corridor, which runs between Boston and Washington, prompting Amtrak’s chief to sound early alarms about service disruptions.
In recent days, Republicans have defended their approach as a fiscally responsible way to reduce the burgeoning federal debt. They’ve largely tried to extract the savings by slimming down federal agencies’ operating budgets next year, technically leaving intact the extra funding that lawmakers adopted in the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
But the effect would be the same: The GOP bills would reduce the federal money available for repairs. The cuts would come at a time when the country is grappling with the real-life consequences of its own infrastructure failures, from train derailments in Ohio and Pennsylvania to the collapse of a key portion of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia last month.
“I guess no one reads newspapers,” said Rep. Mike Quigley of Illinois, the top Democrat on the appropriations panel that oversees transportation and other key infrastructure programs. “When big infrastructure issues are blowing up in our face, we’re doing the opposite.”
They opposed the infrastructure law. Now, some in the GOP court its cash.
The emerging House battle underscores the massive chasm between Democrats and Republicans over the nation’s fiscal health, only weeks after the two parties brokered what was thought to be a political truce.
In a deal to stave off a potential first-ever federal default, Biden worked out an agreement with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in June to pursue modest voluntary spending caps on federal agencies and programs starting in the 2024 fiscal year. In exchange, Republicans permitted lawmakers to raise the debt ceiling, allowing the United States to resume borrowing money to pay its bills.
Even as Republicans touted that vote as a victory, however, some in the party’s far-right flank signaled they planned to continue the fight. They pledged to force Democrats to accept massive spending cuts through the annual appropriations process that funds the government — or risk a shutdown if lawmakers fail to act by the Sept. 30 deadline.
So far, the standoff has largely simmered behind the scenes. In recent weeks, Rep. Kay Granger (R-Tex.), the chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee, has worked methodically to process a dozen funding bills, which McCarthy on Monday said he hopes to start bringing to the chamber floor as soon as next week.
In a sign of the acrimonious debate to come, each of the House appropriations bills features sharp spending cuts that Democrats vehemently oppose — even targeting some federal infrastructure programs that until recently had enjoyed bipartisan support.
Two years after Congress approved $55 billion to improve the nation’s water supply, for example, House Republicans last week proposed to eliminate $1.7 billion from the two primary federal sources for drinking water and wastewater grants to states.
Those programs had received supplemental funding as part of the bipartisan infrastructure act. Rather than undo that law, the GOP bill would dramatically reduce the initiatives’ annual budgets, compared with what they received in the 2023 fiscal year, while underfunding a slew of other federal water infrastructure operations. That includes two programs to help schools and low-income communities reduce lead contamination, which together could receive about $85 million less next year than lawmakers previously had authorized, according to an analysis of data released in January 2022 by the Congressional Research Service.
“I’ll be real honest with you: If you’re looking for a pretty bill, this is not it,” acknowledged Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), the chairman of the appropriations subcommittee that produced the proposal, at a hearing last week.
“Cutting funding is never easy and can often be an ugly process. … But with the nation’s debt in excess of $32 trillion and inflation at an unacceptable level, we have to do our jobs to rein in unnecessary federal spending,” he said.
After weeks of haggling, House appropriators are expected to finalize that bill this week. Rep. Chellie Pingree of Maine, the top Democrat on the panel, described the spending measure in a recent hearing as “one of the most harmful attacks on America’s efforts to tackle climate change.”
Congress approves $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill, sending measure to Biden for enactment
The proposed cuts to infrastructure spending come at a time when new federal money has started to flow more rapidly. The White House estimates it has announced about $225 billion in awards under the 2021 law, which has benefited roughly 35,000 projects nationwide, a figure Biden has touted regularly as he tours the country to promote his economic agenda.
For both parties, the $1.2 trillion packagemarked a major achievement after years of false promises and jokes about botched “infrastructure weeks.” It took months of late-night negotiating sessions among a small group of moderate Democrats and Republicans before they could reconcile their competing visions about the size and scope of new federal spending.
Even then, though, lawmakers acknowledged their compromise addressed only a small fraction of the United States’ true needs. In its latest national report card, the American Society of Civil Engineers projected the nation faces a roughly $2.6 trillion, 10-year backlog in projects to repair the country’s roads, bridges, pipes, ports and internet connections — a gap about twice the size of the infrastructure law.
“There’s a lot of work to be done,” said Emily Feenstra, the chief policy and external affairs officer at ASCE. “We need every cent.”
Some of the greatest needs are in transportation, where House Republicans on Tuesday convened a hearing to finalize a 2024 spending bill that includes $6.6 billion in cuts. The spending reductions predominantly target transit and rail, while curbing Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s work to promote environmental and racial equity.
“This bill is another example of the real progress we’re making to reduce overall spending while funding our highest priorities,” Granger told committee lawmakers.
Amtrak would take one of the heaviest blows, potentially losing $1.5 billion in funding next year if the GOP plan becomes law. In a statement last week, Stephen Gardner, the passenger railroad’s chief executive, said such a cut would force Amtrak to “radically reduce or suspend service on various routes across the nation.”
Republicans would extract another $2 billion from a federal infrastructure program used to fund the construction of new transit lines. That could jeopardize a slew of projects now underway — including the Gateway tunnel system between New York and New Jersey, one of the largest infrastructure endeavors in the nation, which hopes to receive $7 billion to make urgently needed repairs.
The GOP bills also provide no new funding in 2024 for a series of grant programs that Republicans historically have supported. That would equate to a roughly $800 million cut from the initiative known as RAISE, which provides money to cities and states so they can construct bridges over rail lines, create new pedestrian paths and finance street redesigns.
The program is so popular the Transportation Department received $15 billion in requests last year, though the agency could award only 162 projects totaling $2.2 billion in funding in June. Some of those requests came from GOP lawmakers on the House Appropriations Committee: 17 panel members wrote the Biden administration in search of funds for dozens of local projects in 2022 and 2023, according to letters backing requests for funds that the department released to The Washington Post last week.
The members include Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa), who wrote in support of five RAISE applicants in her state. Her office accused the Biden administration of “playing political games” in releasing the letters and said the congresswoman “will remain focused on bringing investments back to Iowa while reining in overall government spending.”
Biden, for his part, only sought in 2024 to fund the RAISE program at the level adopted under the infrastructure law. But the president did request — and Republicans ultimately denied — $1.2 billion in new money for infrastructure megaprojects. That would have included funds for the long-sought overhaul of the Brent Spence Bridge between Ohio and Kentucky and the Calcasieu River Bridge, which carries Interstate 10 in Louisiana.
In an early hearing last week, the top Republican overseeing transportation spending — Rep. Tom Cole (Okla.) — defended the bill as one that “meets the challenge before us to reduce spending and get our debt under control.”
On Tuesday, he added of the fierce debate to come: “These things tend to start out in one place. They always tend to end up some place else.”

An old Masonic temple turned Oddfellows Lodge just outside of Boston, Massachusetts, had lots of weird stuff still inside. Then, one night, artists Nicholas & Ekaterina, got a call at midnight from a real estate broker friend.

He told them that the place was for sale and it gave an uneasy feeling. They had never seen a Masonic temple before and there was a lot of strange furniture, hammers— all the symbols of Masons.

The End Is Nigh por David Blazejewski Por Flickr: After sitting in storage here on the property of Seaview Transportation for over four years time has finally run out for the last significant group of former Amtrak AEM7s. 15 of the veteran electric motors were purchased out of the Bear deadline in 2019 by a mysterious and unknown buyer and have resided here ever since, allegedly in hopes of being rebuilt and brokered to the MBTA for proposed future electrification of portions of the commuter rail network. That admittedly farfetched gamble failed to pay off, and now the locomotives are in the process of being cut up and trucked to the Sims Metal scrapyard at the Port of Providence. Of the 15, one has been set aside for preservation and the rest will meet their fate right here on this stub track within sight of Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor mainline where they once sailed past at 110 miles an hour on the point of Regional trains headed to or from Boston. Amtrak 920, 905, and 935 visible here still sit on the rails awaiting the same fate as their unidentified siblings who have already been shorn to bits and whose cabs lay piled about between the units. The trio were built in 1980-81 and were part of 54 total of the model owned by Amtrak. All three were members of a group of 29 rebuilt by Amtrak and Alstom at Wilmington into an AEM-7AC in 2000-2001 they ran their last revenue miles sometime in late 2015 and have sat ever since.
