Common Dreams

The leftist former Greek finance minister urged Europeans to "wake up and redeem ourselves" by working for the "destruction of the state of apartheid" against Palestinians.
Former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis—who heads the leftist Democracy in Europe Movement 2025—on Tuesday blamed Europe for complicity in Israel's "crimes against humanity" in Palestine, while asserting that the only way to achieve peace is by ending Israeli apartheid against Palestinians.
"Those who try very hard to extract from people like me... a condemnation of the attack by the Hamas guerrillas will never get it," Varoufakis toldred in an interview explaining why he refuses to denounce the surprise weekend infiltration attack by Gaza-based militants that killed at least 900 Israelis.
Varoufakis continued:
And they will never get it for a very simple reason. Those who care about humans without any discrimination; those who care equally about a Jew and an Arab, must ask themselves a very simple question: What exactly is their idea of a cessation of hostilities? That the Palestinians are going to lay down their arms and go back into the largest open-air prison in the world, where they are constantly suffocated by the apartheid state?
"Any human being living under apartheid at some point will either die a terrible silent death or rebel and take some innocent people with them," Varoufakis said.
Addressing European complicity in Israeli apartheid, Varoufakis asserted that "the criminals here are not Hamas. Not even the Israeli settlers who are killing Palestinians. The criminals are Europeans. Us."
"We have participated in this crime against humanity over the decades by keeping our mouths shut," he added. "As long as people are dying outside the reach of cameras, as long as it's Palstinians who die and not the occupiers."
Varoufakis urged Europe to "wake up and redeem ourselves" by working for the "destruction of the state of apartheid."
While Palestinians and international figures including former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, United Nations officials, and South African anti-apartheid activists have for decades called Israel's policies and practices in Palestine apartheid, major Western human rights organizations—including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the Israeli groups Yesh Din and B'Tselem—have only recently begun to do so, as have a growing number of U.S. congressional Democrats.
So have prominent Israelis including former Attorney General Michael Ben-Yair, former Deputy Attorney General Yehudit Karp, and former ambassadors to South Africa Alon Liel and Ilan Baruch, as well as journalists, artists, veterans, and others.
Underscoring Varoufakis' remarks, Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 (DiEM25) posted on social media that "only one thing can put a stop to the tragic cycle of violence suffered by innocent Palestians and Israelis: the end of the Europe-supported Israeli apartheid."
Varoufakis' commentary came as Israeli forces continued a massive retaliatory assault on Gaza by air, land, and sea, killing at least 830 Palestinians, including at least 140 children, while wounding more than 4,000 others. Israeli air and artillery strikes have hit civilian targets including apartment buildings, medical facilities and workers, schools, mosques, and the Jabalia refugee camp, Gaza's largest.
As was the case in previous Israeli attacks on Gaza, entire families have been killed. Speaking Tuesday, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Daniel Hagari declared that "the emphasis is on damage and not on accuracy."
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Monday announced a "complete siege" of Gaza, saying Israel would block food and fuel from entering the territory of 2.3 million people—half of them children—and cut off its water and electricity, actions experts say likely amount to war crimes.
Given the hundreds of Israelis killed, the high death tolls in previous IDF assaults on Gaza, and Israel's unofficial "hundred eyes for an eye" policy, many observers fear thousands of Palestinians could be killed in the coming days and weeks.
Far-right Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed that Israel will exact a "mighty vengeance" for the weekend attacks, while Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich declared that it is "time to be cruel" and parliamentarian Ariel Kallner has called for a "Nakba that will overshadow the Nakba of '48," a reference to the ethnic cleansing of over 750,000 Arabs from Palestine during the founding of the modern state of Israel in 1947-48.
"I witnessed the wars of 2008, 2014, and 2021, but this is something unique in terms of the intensity... entire families have been killed," Nidal Hamdouna, a humanitarian worker with Norwegian-Danish group Church Aid, toldThe Guardian on Tuesday. "The concern is to what extent civilians are protected, but also how to find a safe place, even though there is no safe place to go to."

Two Blooming Flowers
AO3 Link.
Rating: G
Pairing: Susato Mikotoba/Haori Murasame (Rei Membami)
Written for Susahao Week 2022. Day 2: Flowers/Pining
Word count: 2k
-ˋˏ ༻✿༺ ˎˊ-
Upon their return to Japan, Susato finds herself quite lost still. The task of changing Japan’s entire justice system is a daunting one and she perhaps got too used to London allowing her inside the courtrooms and legal faculties, which are now barred from her. There is very little she can do while waiting outside for Naruhodo-san and her father to finish negotiations — which is frustrating when she was the one who wrote all the notes about the British system they are using to bring forth their arguments and she is the one who came up with most of the new policies needed.
So naturally, it is in the arms of a good friend she finds solace.
Haori has started a garden outside the laboratory which she tends to every morning, colourful flowers already blooming as the winter’s chill gives way to spring’s gentle sun. She says it also serves as a testing ground for the fertilisers they are currently developing — apparently Jezail Brett’s case prompted everyone to halt studies about poison for a little while — but Susato suspects her father let her start this project as a way to cope after being accused of murder too.
Which is a far better coping mechanism than hopping in a suitcase to illegally cross oceans, if you ask her.
“In any case, could you not disguise yourself as a man again?” Haori asks as she hands her a pink tulip.
Susato takes the flower carefully, instinctively bringing it to her nose and inhaling the sweet scent. It settles her nerves a bit, or perhaps it is just Haori’s proximity doing that. “You would like that, wouldn’t you?” she teases gently, although a part of her means it. Haori’s flustered attitude when she presented as Ryutaro was flattering but… she sort of wishes her friend would react in such a way when she is just Susato, as well.
Does that even make sense?
“W-Well, you were rather dashing,” Haori admits, eyes going hazy as she reminisces, surely, before she shakes her head and slaps her cheeks to come back to her senses. “But you are clearly upset about this whole ordeal and if there are no other options until things change…”
“But it might take years,” Susato sighs. Who would have thought reforming an entire country’s justice system would be so troublesome? Everyone, probably. She spares a thought to Kazuma-sama and Lord van Zieks across the ocean as they must be dealing with similar issues on British soil.
“Then, the question would be, are you willing to wait, or take action right away?”
-ˋˏ ༻✿༺ ˎˊ-
A day later, Ryutaro Naruhodo is back. Susato is fiddling with her hat, making sure her long hair would not fall out before she grabs the student badge from her bedside table, Kazuma-sama’s student number staring back at her on the back of it. It feels wrong, somehow, to steal Naruhodo-san’s name and Kazuma-sama’s belonging to fool Japan, when justice should be about unravelling the truth yet here she is… deceiving. Do the ends justify the means?
In this case, it must, she decides, pinning the badge to her collar, making sure to lower it enough so it doesn’t poke her chin. Truly an impractical design.
Haori is waiting for her in front of the house, with an umbrella under the gentle rain, and a purple hydrangea in her hand. When she sees her, her friend makes a beeline for her, tilting the umbrella forward to protect both of them.
“Good morning, you look quite gallant as usual,” Haori compliments, blushing slightly.
Susato cannot help a pleased smile but also a tinge of disappointment from tainting her heart. Oh, how she wished she could hear those words regularly.
“Good morning, Haori. I hope I did not make you wait too long.”
“No, do not worry. I was admiring the neighbourhood, I have not really had a reason to come here while you and Kazuma-kun were away.”
Susato nods. “Here. I should hold it for both of us, as a gentleman does,” she says as she takes the umbrella from her friend’s hand and if she lets her touch linger a bit longer than necessary around Haori’s fingers, no one has to know.
As expected, Haori swoons, letting out a wistful sigh. “May I say, you look even more handsome than last time?”
“Ah, well, thank you,” Susato says somehow without stuttering. She can feel her whole face heat up, however. “Um, what of the flower?”
“Oh! It’s for you too!” Without more prompting, Haori goes on her tiptoes so she can pin the flower by Susato’s ear, trapping it below her hat so it cannot fall. Susato almost lets go of the umbrella at the sudden proximity, catching a whiff of the sweet floral scent always surrounding the other girl. “A hydrangea can mean good luck, so I figured it was appropriate. And well, purple suits you, it brings out your eyes.”
Susato blinks, then stares, then probably turns even redder than before. Haori just smiles at her, although there is clear confusion in her eyes, surely wondering if she said something wrong.
“We, ah, we should hurry,” Susato says eventually after clearing her throat.
“Of course, would not want to make you late on your first day at the big boy table!” Haori agrees and then takes a hold of Susato’s arm. Susato tenses at the sudden warmth plastered against her. “Um, is this alright?” her friend asks, obviously sensing the tension in her muscles — she’s a medical student, of course she did.
“Yes, yes of course,” Susato reassures. “It also helps sell this deceit too, I suppose, to have a pretty girl at my arm…?”
Haori giggles, hugging her arm closer. “Oh, Susato, you do know how to talk to a lady,” she teases but she is blushing when she just called her by her given name rather than her pretend one. Susato is getting so many mixed messages.
So she doesn’t reply, only huffs with what she hopes to be an amused smile and not a tense one, before finally walking towards the courthouse, Haori by her side leaning against her.
Surely to make sure the rain does not reach her, not because of anything else… right?
-ˋˏ ༻✿༺ ˎˊ-
Naruhodo-san is waiting by the stairs, fiddling with the headband around Karuma which has only started to become a habit recently when he gets impatient. She shouts his name to get his attention and he nearly falls forward as a result, tripping on air, she supposes.
“Su— Ryutaro, hello,” Naruhodo-san corrects himself, in case anyone else is in hearing distance. He blinks at her as they approach. “You… look different.”
Immediately, Haori slaps him on the arm. “Do not be rude, Naruhodo-san!”
“And hitting me unprompted isn’t?!” Naruhodo-san exclaims. “I did not even mean it negatively!”
“With the face you made, you could have fooled me,” Susato laughs. “What is it? Not convincing enough as your cousin?”
“I’m still wrapping my head around how that even happened does the university just not check the validity of identity papers…” he admits. Susato concedes to his point, her father is influential but was he enough to convince higher-ups to forge papers for their subterfuge? “But no, on the contrary, it’s… a lot convincing, I almost did not recognise you, if it was not for Haori hanging off your arm like that. Might have to work on your voice, however.”
Susato clears her throat. “I will try,” she says, in an attempt to make her voice sound deeper. Last time, Judge Jigoku knew of her and her father’s deceit — and she supposes everyone else in the room was not paying much attention considering Prosecutor Auchi also has a high-pitched voice —, but this time around, she will have no one to cover for her except for Naruhodo-san… and the man, bless his heart, as clever and eager as he is about everything, is quite terrible at lying.
“Now that I see you next to each other, you do look quite alike,” Haori comments, squinting her eyes at Naruhodo-san with a straight face before settling them back on Susato, and the blush is back on her cheeks. Interesting, Susato notes. If they do look alike but Haori never expressed interest in Naruhodo-san…
Ah, but Susato remembers Haori stumbling with her words the first time she met Kazuma-sama though and Naruhodo-san is hardly the gallant type, is he? Compared to her brother.
Oh, wishful thinking.
Naruhodo-san gives her a side glance. “Well, cousin, I believe we should head inside before Prosecutor Auchi gets impatient again.”
“Good luck you two!” Haori cheers. “I will see you at lunch!” She blows them a kiss then saunters away, a bounce to her steps.
Susato watches her leave with a fond smile and of course, Naruhodo-san had to say something and ruin her contemplation.
“And you said I was hopeless with Kazuma.”
Susato glares at him. “And you are,” she huffs, pointing towards Karuma faithfully by the man’s side, its red band still wrapped around one of his fingers. Naruhodo-san sheepishly shrugs. “Let us go.”
“Nice flower, by the way, Haori’s gift?”
“Let us go.”
Naruhodo-san laughs as she pushes him in.
-ˋˏ ༻✿༺ ˎˊ-
“So?” Haori asks her the next day, handing her a single red rose as they idly walk through her garden. Once again, Susato takes it without much thinking, pleased to observe that of course her friend had efficiently gotten rid of the thorns beforehand. “How was that first day as Ryutaro Naruhodo?”
“I was listened to and Naruhodo-san let me do most of the talking,” Susato sighs. She is still in her Ryutaro disguise at the moment, a meeting awaiting her in a few hours and she did not want to bother with changing her appearance in the meantime. “It felt both… exhilarating and terrible.”
“Terrible, truly?” Haori repeats, her happy mood souring upon her friend’s less enthusiastic response. “How so?”
“The experience was not as enjoyable knowing they would not even dare listen to me if they knew I was a girl,” Susato explains. “Although I did not exactly hate posing as a boy either or being addressed as one, I suppose. Is that odd?”
Haori shakes her head immediately. “I do not think so. You seem so comfortable and confident, as either Susato or Ryutaro, it’s kind of… magnetic.” She chuckles, cheeks turning a slight red. “Besides, you do not really change your personality right?”
“No,” Susato confirms. She keeps her eyes firmly on the red rose in her hand. “But do… do you have a preference?”
A pause. “Obviously not, I’ll love whoever you feel more comfortable as.” Haori’s voice is suddenly quieter, more pensive. “Susato or Ryutaro, you’re someone special to me.”
Susato takes a deep breath. “You’re too kind, Haori.”
“No, just being honest.” Susato startles when Haori gently hands her a small bouquet of pink and white daisies. “Your name will live on in this country, I just know it, and someday, people will see you and admire you the way I do, and the way you deserve.”
Susato feels her heart soar and her eyes water, the sudden need to fall to her knees at such a sweet and simple declaration taking her. She cannot handle it much longer, she realises, looking at Haori’s sincere smile and bright eyes, framed by her long silky ebony hair swaying under the gentle breeze of a summer morning, it is now or never.
Carefully, she takes the daisies, enveloping her single red rose in them, but before Haori could walk away, Susato takes her hand in her free one, oh so gently. Surprised and flustered grey eyes meet determined yet scared brown ones.
“I am not too interested in notoriety, I just want to help this country be better… but I just realised what else being Ryutaro can bring me,” Susato starts.
“… Oh?” Haori prompts.
“I would be honoured if you allowed me to court you, Haori Murasame, as Ryutaro in public, but also as Susato in private.”
Silence follows her request, but the hand around hers tightens its grip, warm and reassuring. And then, Haori offers one of her brightest smiles yet — oh how the sun would envy such beauty.
“Oh, Susato, did you not notice? I was already courting you,” Haori chuckles and Susato frowns.
“What?”
“The flowers and the homemade lunches… Surely you must know I have never done this for anyone before.”
Susato’s vision turns a little hazy as she recalls the past few weeks then blushes. “Oh… Oh! Why didn’t you tell me?!”
“Well… I was not sure you returned the feelings and I simply liked doing this for you after missing you for so many months…” Haori admits softly. “But to answer your question… yes, Susato Mikotoba, I would love to be courted by you.”
As she declares so, Haori grabs both of her hands to bring them close to her heart, so she can feel it pulse against her palms. Susato gulps, the beating of her own heart so loud in her ears.
“I will do my best,” Susato promises, her turn to bring Haori’s hands to her lips so she can kiss her knuckles. “And shall prove myself worthy of holding your heart in my hands.”
Haori blushes deeply, visibly fighting the urge to hide behind her sleeves since Susato is firmly holding her hands and not quite allowing herself to let go just yet. “Oh dear, you will be the end of me.”
Susato only smiles because she pretty much has the same thought. Her love is so sweet and cute, how did she ever get so lucky?

For your ask game: Joan Plowright, Francesa Annis, Robert Hardy, Jeremy Brett and Derek Jacobi; in Miss Fisher, Campion, Poirot, either Wimsey series. You decide who goes in what, please disregard age/time issues.
Derek Jacobi would, I suspect, have an absolutely marvelous time as Uncle Paul. But if I'm trying to fit him into the chronology of the existing ones: give him an effervescent cameo as Wellers-the-F.O.-man who gives all the journalists a speech to which they daren't not listen. I barely know Wellers but I like him so much.
I could see Tommy-and-Tuppence-era Francesca Annis as Meg Elginbrodde in Tiger in the Smoke, actually.
Robert Hardy did such a great line in Horrible Old Men; he could be one of the Poirot patriarchs (but I'd actually love to see him as the complicated and charismatic Sir Hubert Handsley in A Man Lay Dead, or the scheming Jonathan Small in Death and the Dancing Footman, if I may be allowed an Alleyn interpolation.)
Joan Plowright for the Duchess in The Case of the Definite Article (notorious in her day.)
I would add more gratuitous Gilbert and Sullivan into Miss Fisher just so that Jeremy Brett could do it. Give him a whole number before we get to the murderous part of the plot. It's more than we deserve, but wouldn't it be a delight? I'm picturing "My Gallant Crew/I am the Captain of the Pinafore." But he would also, of course, be magnificent as Sir Joseph Porter.

Three Ships: Oh man, my top 3 ships change all the time but at the moment it’s probably Brett x Reagan (Inside Job), Skeppy x BBH (Dream SMP, not the actual people!) and Rapunzel x Eugene (Rapunzel lol). Im also not that much into ships anymore, since i focus more on the found family but yea.
First-ever ship: I am very ashamed to admit that but,, Russia x America from countryhumans. I was into that fandom A LOT during 2019 and it was the first fandom where i actively started shipping. Though if we count those childish ships that crossed my mind once and never came back then Foxy x Mangle lol. I think i saw one animation with them when i was like 9 or 10 but never thought about them again until later.
Last song: WITCHERY by SHADXWBXRN
Currently reading: I don’t really read normal books anymore besides for school, since i prefer fanfics, especially oneshots. My last multi-chaptered fanfic i finished this week was Sometimes the picket fence isn’t perfect by skimmingthesurface on AO3. And last normal book i read was Gallant by V.E. Schwab sometime back in October.
Currently watching: Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure. Yeah, it’s amazing. But before that i started watching She-ra (im on the 3rd season) and The mr. Peabody and Sherman show (also on 3rd season). Im planning to finish them both after finishing Rapunzel.

Utah Snaps Wheeling Nailers Win Streak, 4-2
Tumblr media
The Wheeling Nailers would have loved to have seen their record-tying winning streak last forever, but unfortunately, it came to an end on Friday night in the opening match of a three-game series against the Utah Grizzlies at Maverick Center. Utah's Cole Gallant snapped a 2-2 tie with a goal right after a power play expired, and the Grizzlies added an empty netter for the 4-2 home-ice win. Wheeling got both of its markers from defensemen, as Isaac Belliveau and Louie Roehl found the back of the net, while Taylor Gauthier made a season-high 39 saves. The Grizzlies opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the back half of the first period. The first strike came during a four-minute power play. Mick Messner dug the puck out of a scrum along the right corner boards and centered a pass to Nathan Burke, who stepped into the slot and buried a one-timer into the left side of the cage. With 2:26 remaining, Utah capitalized on a Wheeling turnover, and Brett Stapley was the beneficiary, as he found himself open between the hashmarks, where he flipped a shot into the left side of the net. The Nailers rebounded with a strong middle frame, as they held a 12-10 advantage in shots, and two of those turned on the red light. Isaac Belliveau put Wheeling on the board at the 3:24 mark, when he launched a wrist shot from the blueline, which flew into the top-left corner of the twine. The Nailers then pulled even just before the midway mark, following a terrific effort on the rush by Shaw Boomhower. The puck got kicked around in the low slot, and eventually found Louie Roehl, who instantly spun a backhander along the ice and through Dante Giannuzzi's legs. Utah applied all sorts of pressure in the third period with 20 shots on goal, and at the 6:50 mark, the home side regained the lead less than one second after a Nailers penalty had expired. Cole Gallant took a wrist shot from the top of the right circle, and picked his spot in the top-left corner of the cage. Wheeling had to kill one more penalty in the final five minutes, which limited its time to mount a comeback, and with 28 seconds to go, Brandon Cutler iced the 4-2 Grizzlies win with an empty netter. Dante Giannuzzi collected the victory for Utah, as he turned away 29 of the 31 shots he faced. Taylor Gauthier made a season-high 39 saves on 42 shots in the defeat for the Nailers. The Nailers and Grizzlies will continue their three-game series in Utah on Saturday at 9:10. Wheeling's next homestand will take place on February 23rd, 24th, and 25th. The highlight game of the weekend will be Country Night on Saturday the 24th, which features a post game concert by Jason Michael Carroll presented by Generations. The Wheeling Nailers, considered one of the top things to do in Wheeling, West Virginia, provide affordable family entertainment for fans throughout the Ohio Valley. Read the full article

This song has really grown with me.”Armani White, “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth”“I chose ‘Two Front Teeth’ because I used to have a silver tooth when I was a kid,” rapper Armani White tells Apple Music. “I wanted to find a record that could still bring that childlike kid energy into Christmas.”Ella Henderson, “Stay Another Day”“I wanted to produce up this record and do it very differently to the original, but still stick to the original structure,” English singer-songwriter Ella Henderson tells Apple Music. “I wanted to add a few more gospel elements to it, really strip it right back to just myself and a piano. We've got an incredible string arrangement on there, and I think altogether, it just has this really beautiful, minimalistic element, but it also extends to this heightened emotional state.”G Flip, “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”“I chose to cover ‘Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)’ because I just love the song,” Australian singer-songwriter G Flip tells Apple Music. “It’s a banger of a Christmas carol. The Darlene Love version is really awesome, and her wailing vocals on it, how she just lets it rip, especially in the outro, is so great.”Lauren Spencer Smith, “Hallelujah”“I’ve always loved singing ‘Hallelujah,’ and there’s so many different versions of it that so many different artists have created,” Canadian singer-songwriter Lauren Spencer Smith tells Apple Music. “I love singing this song around the holidays, but as a kid, I sang this song all the time at singing competitions and for my mom in the kitchen, so I thought it would be really cool to do a recorded version of this as I got older for Christmas.”Hemlocke Springs, “Christmas Time Is Here”“I think music is one of the biggest reasons why I really enjoy Christmas,” singer-songwriter Hemlocke Springs tells Apple Music. “Christmas music just hits really hard for no reason. It just hits so hard in the feelings. Even with the song I cover, ‘Christmas Time Is Here,’ it can bring me into a happy, joyful, and melancholic state all at the same time. It’s like I’m looking back on memories that have happened in the past and also looking forward to the future. Christmas music just enhances those feelings for me.”Jensen McRae feat. Gallant, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”“It taps into what I love most about all Christmas music and what I try to tap into in my music, which is this sense of nostalgia,” singer-songwriter Jensen McRae tells Apple Music. “It reaches back in time in this really beautiful way, but also doesn’t feel dated.” For this year’s Carols Covered, McRae opted to cover the classic track “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and enlisted some help from Maryland singer-songwriter Gallant. “‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ is one of those classic quintessential Christmas songs,” Gallant says. “It’s probably my favorite Christmas song. It doesn’t go too deep into the symbolism or the technicalities or the religious aspect of the holiday, and as a result, you get a song that, at least for people who celebrate Christmas, is very universal. It talks about gathering with your friends and family, being grateful to be able to spend that time together.”Jeongyeon of TWICE, “O Christmas Tree”“I thought it could bring back some sweet holiday memories for everyone while they listen to my cover,” TWICE member Jeongyeon tells Apple Music. “‘O Christmas Tree’ is one of my must-listen holiday songs. And it takes me back to those comfy times hanging out with my friends and family enjoying the holiday vibes together.”*****Randall Goosby & Carlos Simon, “The Christmas Song”Randall Goosby (violin): “Nat King Cole’s "The Christmas Song" has always been a favourite Christmas carol of mine. He’s the epitome of smooth, suave warmth—everything you’d want to associate with the holidays. I thought it would be the perfect occasion to blend the smoothness of Nat King Cole with the smoothness of the great Carlos Simon to create this wonderful arrangement for you all.” Carlos Simon (piano and arranger): “Of course, I thought of Nat King Cole, the swooning strings and the lush harmonic structure, but I wanted to create something that’s quite Debussy- or Ravel-like in my arrangement, with lush arpeggios and sort of a swooning melody line.”Xuefei Yang, “Ave Maria”“Just as good movies must have soundtracks to enhance the feelings, for me great holidays must have music to enrich the soul and relax the mind. I find the melody of Schubert’s "Ave Maria" so beautiful and touching, which is perhaps why it has been adopted over the years for many occasions, including Christmas. I arranged Schubert’s piece for two guitars, and I play both parts myself, using one guitar as my voice and the other to accompany. Lyricism is one of my trademarks, and this piece gives me the opportunity to really make the guitar sing.”The Sixteen & Harry Christophers, “Bethlehem Down”Harry Christophers (conductor): “I’ve always loved the music of Peter Warlock, and this particular carol has a special place in my heart—I remember singing it when I was a student at Oxford University. Peter Warlock composed Bethlehem Down in 1927 as an entry into The Daily Telegraph’s carol-writing competition when Warlock was in financial difficulty, and he won. I think that’s just brilliant! "Warlock’s version is just four verses for a cappella choir—what we’ve done is just add piano and violin interludes between each verse in a very atmospheric style. I think Peter Warlock would have been very pleased we did this.”Olivia Belli, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”“God Rest You Merry Gentlemen" is not from my own tradition, but its melody attracted me because of its noble and archaic character. I really like its implicit harmonic possibilities, which allow me to play between major and minor, between sweet and bitter. "In the holidays, we have our own ritual regarding music: in the morning, while we decorate the house or cook or wrap gifts, we love lively and rhythmic music. After lunch, which represents for us a moment of pause, we like to listen to smooth songs with a winter mood, while in the evening it’s time for traditional, sacred songs.”Maria Dueñas, “El cant del ocells”Maria Dueñas (violin): “El cant dels ocells " was made famous by the great Spanish cellist Pablo Casals, and is a traditional Catalan song and lullaby. The original text speaks of nature’s joy at learning of the birth of Jesus, with many birds gathering to celebrate. I associate Christmas with spending time with my family and having time to reflect, so I chose a work with a nostalgic and intimate feeling—the feeling of going back home.”Carols Covered playlist link: apple.co/carolscovered Read the full article
