Family thought cat they wanted was 19lbs
Brooke DaviesPublished Apr 9, 2024, 5:04pm|Updated Apr 9, 2024, 5:14pm Expand A family accidentally took in a cat bigger than their own child after misreading his measurements. Kristine Seguin chose Alex the cat for her 10-year-old daughter Amelie thinking he was 19lb, not 19kgs. This meant she was shocked to find the three-stone cat weighs […]

Part 2
November 15th 2018
(Brooke’s POV)
"Well, you are gonna be happy," Tyler said as he walked into the living room, handing me his phone.
"Wait what?" I asked looking up at him and he just nodded at his phone.
I looked down and read a twitter post that said "Washington Capitals trade Andre Burakovsky to Dallas Stars for Remi Elie."
"Whoa what?!"
"Your little Swedish boyfriend will be in town," Tyler said, grabbing his phone. I could tell he wasn't actually mad he was just trying to give me a hard time.
Tyler had known that from the start of me watching hockey that he, himself, had always been my favorite. We had met when I moved to Dallas to be roommates with my best friend. I ended up working at a local coffee shop that he went to a lot, and our relationship had gone from there. I was moved into his house in 5 months of us being together and we had been that way ever since, a year later. He knew that Dallas was my team, I went to every home game, and of course supported my baby. However I did have other teams I liked as well as other players. He had made jokes about it at first, fake being mad, but he made sure that I knew he didn't actually mind.
Burky happened to be one of them. I had a jersey of his, which Tyler had given me a lot of shit for when I first got it. I was so shocked to see that Washington had traded him at all, he had been doing so great this past season, and they had just won the cup! What I was even more surprised about was that Dallas had gotten him.
Tyler sat down on the couch next to me and wrapped his arm around me, kissing my temple. I cuddled into the side of him and smiled, closing my eyes. I was glad that Tyler wasn't the type of boyfriend to actually be bothered by little things like that. If this had been my last relationship it would of caused so many fights.
"You know I'm just messing with you right?" He whispered in my ear and I smiled, nodding.
"Of course I do," I turned to look up at him and leaned forward to give him a kiss.
It had been about 2 months since Andre had gotten into town and started playing with the boys. I had talked to him at a few events that Tyler would bring me along to, and he was very sweet. It was a long weekend with no games and Tyler decided that he wanted to have a BBQ with everyone since the weather was going to be nice, even being in the middle of January. People had slowly started showing up as the day went on, Jamie and Katie were the first to arrive, Katie being sweet and wanting to help me finish getting everything ready while Tyler and Jamie started to cook on the grill.
I had just finished making the last side dish and put it into the fridge until everything else was ready to go when Andre walked into the house. I gave him a quick hug, welcoming him to his first Stars BBQ and showed him the way to the backyard. The dogs were running around with some of the guys who were playing keep away with a frisbee, Tyler and Jamie were hanging out by the grill and some of the WAGs were sitting out around the pool.
I went back inside where Katie was still in the kitchen, making herself a drink. She smiled at me as I walked back in and laughed softly.
"What?" I asked looking at her as I leaned against the island counter.
"Nothing.." she said, still smiling. "Alright alright," she said, already knowing I wasn't going to let her not tell me. "Don't you dare tell Jamie I said this. You know I love him to the moon and back but Andre.."
"Yeah I know," I laughed. "I mean I have the most handsome boyfriend in the entire world, but that boy.." I sighed. "Anyways," I laughed and stood up, grabbing the drinks and helped Katie to carry them outside.
(Tyler's POV)
The night had gone great, everyone was having a blast, and the food was amazing as usual. Brooke was hanging out with Katie and some of the other girls playing corn hole.
"You're really lucky man," Andre said to me as I sat back down in my chair at the fire pit.
"Whys that?" I asked, taking a sip of my drink.
"Brooke is really great. She listens and actually cares how you feel. Never found anything like that back in D.C."
I smiled and nodded. "Yeah I got lucky with that one," I said looking over to where she was standing.
(Brooke's POV) 2 months later
It was the first home game for the boys since they had been on their two week road trip. They had just won, Tyler getting the winning goal. I had headed downstairs towards the locker room with Katie to meet our boys after they finished with media and such. We were standing against the wall when I saw Tyler walk out of the locker room and smiled at me.
"So.." he started.
I looked at him, my eyebrows furrowing. "So what?" I asked, knowing he had something going on in that brain of his.
"Um.. How do you feel about a roommate?"
"No more dogs Tyler," I said, crossing my arms over my chest. "I love the boys but Gerry is still a puppy and acts crazy-"
"No not another dog," he laughed.
"Oh.. Um who?"
"Well.." Tyler paused and looked over his shoulder. I could see Andre lurking in the background, looking down at his feet, holding his duffel bag. I uncrossed my arms from in front of me and looked back up to Ty.
"Andre?"
He nodded. "He doesn't have anywhere to stay right now. The apartment that he got to start out with is uh.. well its not really a safe livable environment. So I offered him to stay with us until he finds a place. We have the guest room downstairs so I figured it would-"
"Tyler," I laughed. "Its your house babe."
"Its your house too."
"I know, you keep telling me that," I smiled and leaned up to give him a kiss. "Yes of course he can stay with us," I said after pulling away.
Tyler looked back over his shoulder and motioned for Andre to come over. "The boss lady said its okay," Tyler said, laughing when I smacked his arm.
"I'm not the boss lady," I rolled my eyes and smiled.
"Thank you Brooke, I appreciate this a lot," Andre said, shyly.
"Of course!" I smiled and we all made our way outside to head home.
The end of the season was fast approaching and I could tell that the boys were a little stressed out. They had yet to clinch a spot in the playoffs but there was still a chance for sure. They had just gotten back home from a few away games last night, having tonight off. Tyler had decided he wanted to head to the gym this morning, waking me up with a kiss goodbye.
I rolled over in bed and grabbed my phone off of my bedside table to see if I had any notifications. I unlocked my phone and opened Instagram, seeing that I had a few on there. As soon as I opened the app I smiled, seeing that Tyler had posted a picture of me when I was sleeping. I didn't look too bad, and the caption he had put was super cute. However I should of stopped there and not continued to scroll down because seeing the comments that were posted was too much this early in the morning.
I had been used to people being mean to me on social media since I started dating Tyler, and for the most part I could handle it and just ignored them. I knew that Tyler loved me and how he felt about me so I didn't feel the need to prove myself to any of these hockey fans, however there were some moments when certain comments affected me more than other.
Today was, sadly, one of those days. It had already been a hard enough month with dealing with my grandfather going through dementia and being in and out of the hospital because he had become aggressive with my grandmother on a few occasions. Being so far away I felt helpless, not that there was anything I could really do in the first place anyways. My emotions had kind of been all over the place because of that, and reading comments on a picture of me like "I can't believe you are still with that cow" or "Is Tyler blind or what? I don't get how she ended up with someone like him." and my favorite, from the same girl who always posted some bull shit about me "He only likes her for her tits. its so obvious. There is no way that they will last. I have a better chance at being with him than she ever did, he just didn't meet me yet."
I sighed and shut my phone off and got out of bed. I pulled on one of Tyler's shirts and a pair of PJ shorts. All three dogs lifted their heads off the bed as they watched me walk across the room, jumping off the bed to follow me out of the room and down the stairs. There was no way I was going to go back to sleep after that so might as well make some breakfast. However I was no longer hungry so maybe I should just have an apple or something..
I grabbed a water out of the fridge and an apple off the counter and walked into the living room, sitting down and turning the TV on. I was trying really hard to focus on whatever it was that was on the TV but I couldn't. I was still thinking about those comments and I had a bad feeling that wouldn't change for a while. I looked over, seeing my reflection in the glass door that lead out to the backyard and closed my eyes. Great now I was seeing what the dumb asses on the internet did.
I had gained a little weight over the last 6 months. Tyler said he didn't believe me at all that I looked the same as I had the whole time we had been together, and that was how he liked me. I loved that was how he was with me, it always made me feel better, but I still always had that little voice in the back of my head that fought with every good thing that was said to me.
I curled up on the couch, resting my head on the pillow. I didn't even realize that I was crying until Andre had come in with a plate of food for himself and sat on the other couch next to me. He looked over, doing a double take when he noticed I was crying.
"Brooke?" He asked softly. "Are you okay?"
Andre was very sweet, I loved having him as a roommate. He and I had bonded over a few things, and became really great friends in the time that we had spent together. However when I had my weaker moments he was always there to listen to me and give me a hug which always helped. Tyler of course did those things as well but it was different from Andre. I knew that Andre had dealt with being hard on himself as well, and while I know Tyler did from time to time too it was just.. different somehow. I felt like Andre kind of understood more than Ty did.
I nodded and wiped my cheeks. "Yeah Andre I'm okay," I said softly and turned my attention back to the TV.
Andre set his plate down on the coffee table and shook his head. "No you aren't. Whats the matter?"
I sighed and sat up. "I just.. Tyler posted a picture of me this morning on his Instagram and.."
"People were mean."
I looked up at him and nodded. "Yeah how did you know?"
"I saw them," he said softly and stood up, walking over to sit next to me. "I'm sorry people are like that. It's not true though," he said and wiped my cheek.
I looked down at my lap and nodded. "Thanks."
"No seriously Brooke. You are beautiful and sweet and kind. You deserve everything that you have, they are all just jealous."
"Jealous of what Andre?" I asked and looked up at him. "I'm not exactly model esque. I don't look like any of the other WAGs. They are all very sweet girls though, so they don't see it like everyone else does, but I do. I'm sick of feeling like I don't fit in. I'm sick of feeling like no matter what I do no one will like me. And I'm sick of caring about any of that. As much as I try, or as many times as Tyler tells me to stop worrying about the fans I can't," I explained, more tears running down my face.
Andre sighed and grabbed my right hand with his left and rubbed circles on the back of my hand with his thumb. "I understand-"
"No Andre I don't think you do! You are perfect. You are a good looking guy, you are fit, you play in the NHL, you won a Stanley cup. You-" my voice cut off, not able to continue as I cried harder. I know that all these emotions were not just from the comments on the picture today, but everything building up over the last few months.
Andre wrapped his arms around me, pressing my face against his chest and rubbing my back. "Please don't cry," he said softly.
After a few minutes I finally had calmed down enough and pulled back from his embrace. I sighed and wiped my cheeks off, not wanting to look at him. "I'm sorry. Its just with everything going on with my grandpa lately and then toda-" I started to apologize but my words got cut off, Andre's lips meeting mine.
I tensed, not sure what to do because I was in shock, my brain still not caught up to what was going on just yet. I had thought about kissing him before, way before Tyler and I were ever together, but I never thought that it would happen. Granted I didn’t think I would also be dating Tyler ever in my life, let alone at the same time that Andre decided to kiss me. What the fuck?! He pulled away before I even got the chance to, his eyes wide.
"Oh my god," he mumbled. "I-I'm so.. I'm so sorry Brooke," He said and stood up. "I.. fuck," he swore under his breath and walked out of the living room.

With their thick, glistening manes, proclivity for play, and taste for crawfish, members of a growing southeastern species are flocking to Texas. And no, we’re not talking about recent graduates of Louisiana State University. North American river otters, which were scarce in the Lone Star State for most of the last century, are on the rebound.
A recent spate of otter sightings along Texas waterways, including in downtown Houston’s Buffalo Bayou, tracks with what the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has known for a while, says Diana Foss, an urban biologist with the agency: otters are making a comeback across the state.
Exact numbers are hard to come by—in part because the creatures are so elusive, and in part because the populations have been doing so well that TPWD no longer conducts otter surveys regularly.
“We have finite resources regarding biologists’ availability, so we try and tackle the rarer species,” Foss says. “In the next ten or twenty years, I’m anticipating that more people will see river otters in the wild or in their backyards, depending on where they live.”
If you are lucky enough to spot a river otter, odds are it’s a juvenile, according to Foss. They seem to be more adventurous than the adults and are willing to venture many miles to expand their territories. “It’s usually the young ones who are trying to find their own place in the world,” Foss says. “They’re like pioneers, moving westward.”
River otters were once among the most common mammals across North America, but extensive hunting and trapping decimated their numbers by the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Prized for their chocolaty brown coats—which are waterproof, warm, and incredibly soft—millions of the animals ended up as hats or mittens. They were especially prevalent in East Texas rivers and in the Houston area. Otters also likely once roamed other corners of the state, including the Panhandle and South Texas. Still, until about a decade ago, TPWD researchers believed that the species’s population in the state was limited to the Piney Woods of East Texas.
But over time, as states placed stricter limits on hunting and trapping and as otter pelts became far less fashionable, Foss says that otter populations have grown. (Hunting otters is legal in Texas, but a special license is required if you want to profit from the activity.) For at least a decade, TPWD listed Lontra canadensis as a “species of greatest conservation need,” a step down from a federal listing under the Endangered Species Act; that designation was recently removed.
Enthusiasts have posted more than 250 verified Texas sightings of the species on popular nature and conservation site iNaturalist.org in the last two years. And Foss says TPWD now believes otters and their pups inhabit “every river system in East Texas,” all the way west to Seguin, with word-of-mouth sightings even cropping up in San Antonio.
A video of the frisky critter taking a dip in a suburban Texas swimming pool was all over the internet in 2019. And a September post from Fairfield Lake State Park, southeast of Dallas, shows three otters squeaking as they munch on mudbugs—their favorite delicacy. Otters are familial critters, known for their obsession with play; families often frolic and splash together, pups and adults alike exuding cheerful, carefree attitudes. But they can also wield their sharp teeth and claws when threatened.
“Play is very important to otters, but they are ready to do some damage. When it comes down to it, they’re a carnivore,” says Brooks.
Still, their cuteness is hardly contested—especially from a distance (and on social media). Perhaps the most viral spottings occurred last month, when a pair (or pairs) of the species was seen on two different occasions near downtown Houston, swimming in Buffalo Bayou Park’s urban waterway shortly after Tropical Storm Nicholas made landfall.
David Armendariz and his husband were jogging along the bayou when they spotted the two otters swimming and diving in the muddy brown water. “I thought they were rats at first,” he told the Houston Chronicle. Armendariz’s Instagram video drew hundreds of comments. Five days later, the bayou otters popped up again: local photographer Christine Wilson filmed a video of the duo while walking with her five-year-old grandson.
“I saw what looked like a deep brown tail of a fish. I got excited as my grandson was there and then a small head popped up, and I knew. We had an otter,” she says.
Wilson had seen jumping fish, herons, egrets, and even a snapping turtle on the bayou. But never an otter before or since. One swam to the right, and from the bank across the way its curious companion splashed in to meet it in the middle of the murky brown waters. The video shows the pair leisurely paddling together, looking like nothing so much as a married couple out for a morning stroll.
“I’ve lived here forty-seven years, and this is the first time I ever knew [otters] to be inside the city limits,” says Dan Brooks, curator of vertebrate zoology at the Houston Museum of Natural Science and founder of the Houston Urban Wildlife Project. He spends much of his time researching birds and bats along Buffalo Bayou.
Otters seek calm, quiet territory where they can create dens near the water’s edge, Brooks says. They’re looking for clean, fresh water—which is not exactly Buffalo Bayou’s claim to fame, though efforts are underway to change that. They avoid noise pollution and often get confused by roadways (including Allen Parkway, Memorial Drive, and Interstate 10, which border the park’s green space) and car lights that leave them disoriented. They are often struck by cars, says Brooks—and sightings of their carcasses listed on iNaturalist sadly confirm that. Spotting them alive and well in an urban setting is still a rare treat.
Also, Brooks adds, it’s extremely rare to see an otter in the same area twice, so if you go looking for them, it’s best to keep your expectations low.
“They move around quite a bit,” he says. “With some birds or a beaver dam, people will see it and say, ‘Go check this out’ and you can see it. Otters are not that way.”
His prediction? “I am ninety-eight percent sure that [Tropical Storm Nicholas] played a role in seeing them where we saw them,” he says. Flash flooding could have whisked the otters away from their less densely populated home upstream around Katy, where Buffalo Bayou begins. Strong winds can potentially pick up small animals, he says, or at least leave them disoriented.
“Them just getting thrown off course and confused is probably the most likely explanation,” he says.
Foss, however, thinks the downtown sightings are a hopeful response to activists’ efforts to improve urban habitat for wildlife in Texas, and particularly in the Bayou City.
“In the past Buffalo Bayou’s been kind of a forgotten, polluted bayou,” she says. “It goes through the heart of Houston, and people have been working really hard to bring the water quality back up to good standards, preserve the habitat along the bayou, and plant more riparian zone, which is what the otters use.”
As habitats continue to improve for native species—not only along Buffalo Bayou, but also along greenbelts and even power easements through the state—Foss expects Texans will encounter more and more otters as they continue expanding their territory westward or as they lay down roots in new homes.
“It’s a natural event,” she says. “And hopefully it continues. We’re starting to see other wildlife come back to the bayou, too.”
Where to See River Otters in Texas
River otters are elusive, but not impossible to find. Patience and low expectations are key. Nature lovers and wildlife trackers have spotted North American river otters in these areas in the last few years, according to sightings posted on iNaturalist.org.
Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, southwest of Port Arthur
Bayside Regional Park, in Bacliff
Davy Crockett National Forest, west of Lufkin
Fairfield Lake State Park, in Fairfield

High School Reunion
Word Count: 1,826
Player: Tyler Seguin
Warning: Cussing
Requested: No
Authors note: I had this super random idea pop into my head last night when I was scrolling through facebook (idk why I would ever do that, I was bored I guess) and I saw a bunch of girls I graduated high school with who have gotten married and have kids, and I never want to go to my reunion it doesn’t interest me, but the only way I would go is if this was my situation lol. Hope you all enjoy this silly little blurb I wrote at 5am xD
"Tyler I don't want to go." I groaned and sat on the edge of the bed.
"Babe come on, it's just for a few hours!"
I sighed and stared up at the ceiling. "I don't think you really understand Ty. You have always been a hot shot hockey player, and I'm sure all the girls wanted you back in school. I was not someone that anyone paid attention to. I wore oversized sweatshirts and sweatpants to school almost everyday. I didn't care to attract any guys because none of them from here are my type anyways, but even the 'friends' that I had in school were fucking liars. There was only one, MAYBE two that were actually my friends-"
"Hey," Tyler gently put his hands on either side of my face and pulled my head down so I was looking at him. "Babe you are better than all of those people. Go in there and show them that!"
I sighed and looked into his eyes, smiling a bit. "I mean I did somehow end up with the hottest NHL player..." I laughed and he just shook his head, smiling back at me.
"That's not what I mean babe and you know it. You own your own business back home, and you kick ass at it! Plus you look hot as fuck, and from what I remember you telling me about some of those girls.. I want you to prove them wrong."
I looked down and nodded. Most of the girls had actually been nice to my face in high school, but there were some fat jokes made in my direction at some point when I was younger. I had hoped that I was going to be able to get away with not going to my stupid 10 year reunion, living so far away that would of been easy to pass off. However it just happened to be that the Dallas Stars were playing against the Boston Bruins last night, and had three days off before their next home game. That meant Tyler and I drove three hours to my home town after the game last night, which they won of course.
"Alright alright fine. But only because you are going to be there."
"By your side all night I promise," Tyler smiled and pressed a kiss to my lips before pulling me to my feet off the bed and walking out to the rental car.
Wow I hadn't been here in 10 years. Looked the exact same though. Once I graduated this hell hole I never looked back, but here I was, walking into the back entrance headed into the gym. I looked around, seeing a number of people I recognized, but was trying to ignore.
"Oh shit babe. Go inside I'll be right back I left my wallet in the car."
"What? No I'll just go with you."
"Baby I'll be two seconds. I'll find you I promise," he smiled and gave me a quick kiss before running back towards the car.
My safety blanket was now gone, and I wasn't sure what to do. I sighed and walked into the doors, not really sure why I was actually here. The only person I was looking forward to seeing was an old coworker of mine and good friend, however the only reason she was even going to be here was because her husband graduated with me. Other than her there were only two other people I use to be friends with back in high school, but honestly we never talked anymore.
I lied. I knew the real reason why I came to this stupid thing, besides Tyler basically dragging me here. I was a very successful business owner back in Dallas and I was proud of that. I also happened to have the most handsome and talented husband here, except right now he was at the car and now I was standing here signing my name on a piece of paper for a dumb name tag.
"Thanks," I smiled to the lady on the other side of the table and stuck the name tag onto my dress.
I walked into the gym, looking around and seeing a lot of people that I recognized. I sighed softly seeing a few eyes lingering on me for a bit longer than I liked.
"I'm surprised shes here, I heard she moved to Dallas."
Oh yeah here it goes.
"She looks way different than back in high school."
"Yeah at least she's not wearing that stupid oversize sweatshirt and sweatpants like she always use to."
I didn't even want to know who it was talking about me, nor did I really care, or at least I was trying to not care. I just really wished Tyler would hurry up.
I made my way over to a table and sat down, looking around for my friend. She had texted me earlier and said they were here but I had yet to find her. I pulled my phone out and sent her a quick text to let her know where I was.
"Aw she's alone," a girls voice said.
"Are you surprised? She never dated anyone in high school, and she always hung out with the weird kids"
I rolled my eyes and kept pretending to text.
"Whoa who is that?"
"Is that Tyler Seguin?"
"Wasn't he on the Bruins a while ago?"
"Yeah what the fuck is he doing here?"
I smiled and looked up, watching him scan the room for me. Now was my chance to confuse the fuck out everyone and I was going to love this.
"Ty!" I called out, smiling as his head looked in my direction.
"Hey babe," He smiled and walked over to where I was sitting, grabbing a seat next to me.
"No. fucking. way,” one of the male voices, that had been mixed in with the rest of the whispered confusion about Tyler, said.
I smiled and leaned forward, pressing my lips to his and the interlocking our fingers together.
"Find your wallet?" I smiled at him.
"Yes," he laughed. "Where's Em?"
"Not sure yet, I texted her to let her know I'm here."
"Oh okay. Do you want me to go grab you something to drink?"
"That would be great," I smiled and let go of his hand as he got up and made his way over to the drink table.
"Brooke?"
I looked up to the voice that vaguely sounded familiar. "Hey Cassy," I smiled. She had actually been one of the nicer ones in school, though we never hung out outside of class or anything she had never been mean to me at least.
"Is that your husband?" She asked pointing to Tyler.
I smiled and nodded. "Yeah."
"Damn girl!" She laughed and turned to introduce me to her boyfriend of three years.
"I heard you moved to California?" I asked her.
"Yeah I did some modeling after high school and then just kind of drifted around until I found this one. What about you?"
"Down in Dallas now. Opened my own business down there, met him at an event I was attending. We had mutual friends and crossed paths a few times. I knew who he was way before he knew who I was though," I laughed.
"Oh?"
"Yeah. I love hockey and he plays in the NHL. Used to be on the Bruins but now he’s the star down in Dallas," I smiled as he made his way back over to the table.
"Jesus," Cassy said softly, but I for sure heard her.
"Here you go babe," Tyler smiled and set a glass in front of me.
"Ty, this is Cassy and Blake. She was in a few of my classes in high school. She was one of the nice ones," I laughed.
"Nice to meet you," Tyler smiled and shook both of their hands.
"Brooke!"
I would know that voice anywhere.
"Em!" I smiled and stood up, giving her a big hug.
"Missed you bitch!"
I laughed and shook my head. "Missed you too slut."
"You would never know they were so close," Tyler laughed, Em's husband laughing and agreeing with Tyler.
The night had gone on for a few hours, no more whispered comments were heard for the rest of the night, even a few of the people had come up to Tyler and asked for a picture. He would look at me each time, silently asking if they were nice to me in school. Most of them were okay, but a few of them I didn't like so he would tell them no, which made me smile and them mad.
"Thanks for forcing me to go," I smiled as we walked out of the school hand in hand.
Tyler laughed. "You didn't look like you were forced once you got comfortable, which I knew you would. You had some friends there still."
"Yeah just ones that I'll talk with at high school reunions that's all."
"That's okay babe," he smiled and pressed a kiss to my temple.
"You were a big shot in there though. Did you think it was going to turn into a mini media tour for you?"
"Well I did play in Boston a number of years ago, I assumed someone might recognize me. Not as many as that but hey I was glad that I got to go with you. Seeing the looks on their faces-"
"When they saw I was with you? Yeah I know," I laughed.
"No babe, it had nothing to do with me."
"Oh Ty... that's where you are wrong. All of those people probably assumed I would end up alone or something, not with someone as handsome and as talented as you. But you know what? I feel more lucky that I got to show off you. Sure I feel comfortable in my skin now, but to prove all of those snotty girls wrong and have a hotter husband than them? That was awesome," I smiled.
Tyler laughed and opened my car door for me. "Well I'm happy to of helped. But I'm the one who won having the hottest partner, and don't even think about denying it," He smiled and shut my car door.
I smiled to myself and looked down to my wedding band, twisting it around a bit. I sure was lucky to be with Tyler, and as much fun as it was to rub in the popular girls faces that I ended up with an NHL player, I honestly couldn't care less where we lived, or what he did for work. He loved me and I loved him and that was all that mattered.
Tyler got in and leaned over, pressing a kiss to the corner of my mouth and smiled. "Let's go home," he said starting the car and pulling out of the parking lot.
"Good idea," I whispered as I watched the school disappear in the rear view mirror.

Four Thoughts: Batter Up
1. The Rangers acquiring and signing of Adam Fox represents a marked shift in the lifespan of where the Rangers believe they are in the rebuild. This is the first time since the Brendan Smith trade, over two years ago, that the Rangers have traded away draft picks to acquire a player. There shouldn’t be any arguments made Gorton didn’t lose significant value in trading the 37th overall pick this year and more than likely, the second rounder next year as well which could be easily brought back in a future trade. Given how many picks NYR have acquired since the beginning of all this, sparing a couple of second rounders doesn’t seem all that high of a price. Nonetheless, the Rangers defensive prospect pipeline, capped off Adam Fox, is ripe with blue-chip players ready to break into the league over the next few years.
2. Ditto for the Russian imports Vitali Kravtsov (NYR 1st-2018) and Igor Shestyorkin (NYR 4th-2014) signing their entry level contracts on 5/3. Shestyorkin’s arrival to NY has been a long time in the making all the while NYR fans have seen him put up dazzling performances with SKA and Russian international teams. What’s crazy to me is that Shestyorkin wasn’t really ever the full time goalie in the KHL. He played 39 games in 16-17 in a 60 game season which was by far the most, and followed it up with back to back 28 appearances in the next two seasons. SKA has had long playoff campaigns as well, playing in only 16 playoff games as a NYR draft pick, 10 of those coming just this past season. So despite being 23, Shestyorkin is coming over to North America with very little tread worn off the tire. The Rangers pick of Kravtsov was daring at the time, but it now makes Gorton and the NYR scouting staff look like geniuses. I thought Kravtsov was much better internationally than he was for his Chelyabinsk club where the lack of talent there was noticeable. Another positive for Kravtsov... the Rangers being awarded the second overall pick takes a TON of pressure off him to perform immediately.
3. There’s been a lot of meaty stuff written about NYR recently both locally and elsewhere. Larry Brooks had a big write-up on the Rangers on 4/30 regarding the signing of Fox and the immediate impact it has on the current Rangers blueline. Brooks disclosed that Gorton tried to move Shattenkirk at the deadline this past February to no avail and even suggested he could be bought out in case NYR aren’t able to get a deal that they like. He also suggested NYR could be hot on the tail of Jacob Trouba in Winnipeg who is a pending RFA. Trouba has had issues in the past with the Jets and it will be more of a surprise if he re-signs there than if he gets traded. I’m not quite sure where the motivation is to acquire Trouba since they basically have the same kind of player now in Shattenkirk. I would argue that there’s a more pressing issue with what to do with Brendan Smith and perhaps to a lesser extent, Marc Staal. At some point the Rangers are going to have to eat a bit of money to move bodies out for young players moving up. Exactly how that happens is an interesting conundrum for the Rangers to deal with relatively soon.
4. Elliotte Friedman, in his 31 Thoughts write-up on 4/30 suggested Gorton will be aggressive this summer since teams up against the cap ceiling will call teams like NYR with cap space to burn. In exchange, the Rangers could take a young talent that will contribute immediately. I would suggest NYR load up on blueline help through trades and free agency, while signs point to Gorton and Gordie Clark picking primarily forwards in the draft. Friedman also suggested NYR wouldn’t be afraid to use an offer sheet on a player that they target. And there’s only two players in the league that would be worth for the Rangers, or any team to give up four first round picks, Mitch Marner and Patrik Laine.
4a. Going over second round predictions. Again, the actual series result in bold.
(CBJ in 7) BOS in 6- CBJ had total control of this series through the first three games and were up 2-1 heading into game 4 at home... So how’d they lose three straight? There’s more to this than just CBJ just running out of gas. You hear a lot how a goal, a hit, or a strong shift can get a team going again in the playoffs. Remember Brad Marchand’s jab at the back of Scott Harrington’s head at the end of Game 3? The Bruins top line was unstoppable after they tied the series at 2 in Game 4. Pair that with the play of deadline acquisitions Charlie Coyle and Marcus Johansson and the Bruins have the look of a team that could win the whole thing. I just wonder how much the Bruins have left after playing 13 tough, physical games.
(CAR in 6) CAR in 4- I kind of figured the defensive minded Islanders might be in a little trouble against a shot heavy Hurricanes team that has done nothing but put up gaudy numbers all season on the analytical side of things. Even still, the Hurricanes dominant blueline and goaltending was the difference to this mostly one sided series. Throw in the Islanders, along with Tampa and Toronto with a ton of questions this offseason when it comes to their roster. The Isles core players are all on expiring contracts this year, so roster construction for them going into next season is critical.
(DAL in 6) STL in 7- It sucks that NYR were just a goal away in a Game 7 from a third 1st round pick but once the offense from Benn and Seguin dried up, the Stars were done. However the future is very bright there. This series was definitely all about the blueliners from both teams and the Blues were just a little bit better in this department. The hockey world isn’t talking about Jordan Binnington enough. He is in my opinion, an absolute lock to win the Conn Smythe trophy if the Blues manage to win two more rounds.
(COL in 6) SJ in 7- I didn’t watch a ton of this series, but give a ton of credit to the Sharks for managing to get back to the conference final without Pavelski. The play of Martin Jones in goal is going to be huge moving forward. They have the blue line and depth up front to go all the way, they just need the same effort from Jones too. The Avs still have a young team that likely needs to feel a little pain to move forward. They should be a strong contender for the division for the next several years.

This Week in Caps: Week 5
Welcome to This Week in Caps, a weekly newsletter where I recap everything important that’s been going on in the world of the Washington Capitals this past week.
This Week’s Games
11/01/18 @ Montreal Canadiens
Tumblr media
After a quick stop at home for practice, the Caps finished up their road trip to take on a speedy Montreal Canadiens club. Brooks Orpik was out with injury, meaning that Madison Bowey got into the lineup on a pairing with Christian Djoos, and we got to see the blessed return of Alternate Captain John Carlson.
The Caps did not get off to a great start. Just two and a half minutes into the game, Jesperi Kotkaniemi beat Braden Holtby five-hole, scoring his first NHL goal and giving the Habs a 1-0 lead. Lars Eller would bring the Caps back even just after six minutes in, firing home the rebound that came off a blocked Matt Niskanen shot. About two minutes later, Evgeny Kuznetsov got frustrated with Brendan Gallagher, did some mild tusseling, and the two went off for roughing, and the game would be four-on-four for two minutes. The rest of the period would be rather uneventful other than Montreal being the much faster team and dictating most of play.
If the first period started bad, then the second period started worse. Thirty seconds into the period, Tomas Tatar cleaned the puck out of the air and sent it to Brendan Gallagher up close, who scored to make it a 2-1 Montreal lead. Gallagher scored again just two and a half minutes later, when he took the carom off the boards and made it 3-1 Montreal.
But this time, the Caps would response. At the 6:49 mark, Kuznetsov sent the puck to Alex Ovechkin on a two-on-one, and he sent it home to cut the lead to 3-2. A minute later, Eller sent home a loose puck to score his second of the game and tie it 3-3. Five minutes later, Dmitry Orlov threw a puck at the net that hit off Ovechkin and went into the net; Ovechkin tallied his second of the game, and the Caps now led 4-3. But holding the lead wouldn’t be easy; Kuznetsov found himself in the box once again, this time for holding, and this time the Caps had to kill a penalty, helped out by an amazing block from Michal Kempny, which hit him high but left him no worse for the wear. Eller also committed an infraction, heading to the box with three seconds left in the second, giving the Habs almost a full power play to start the third, which the Caps ended up killing.
The Caps almost held the lead and made it out. But they were completely outplayed in the third, and by the end of the period they paid for it. With three minutes left in the game, Kotkaniemi jammed the puck home from traffic in the crease and it trickled past Holtby, giving him his second of the game and tying the game 4-4. For a second, it looked like the Caps would make it to overtime, but Max Domi scored off Holtby’s glove with 22 seconds left in the game. And to make matters worse, Joel Armia scored off the faceoff into the empty net just two seconds later to give Montreal the 6-4 win.
The Caps ended up getting badly outshot 44-31, but they had the significant advantage on faceoffs at 61.0% (led by Nicklas Backstrom at 76.5%). The Caps didn’t get a chance to exercise their potent power play until their only chance more than halfway through the third, and ended up going 0/1 on the night. But their penalty kill was also stellar, keeping the Habs to 0/2 on their chances. Holtby made 38/43 saves.
Niskanen played some good defense, Eller had a good all-around game, and Holtby was good and made some very great saves. But overall, the defense let him down, and the Caps put up an ugly one. They had a chance to bank those two points, but they squandered it away. The Habs were the faster team and made them look bad early and in the third period. This one just felt bad.
11/03/18 vs Dallas Stars
Tumblr media
The Dallas Stars are in town, so guess what that means? That’s right, pain and suffering. This matchup has rarely ever gone well for the Capitals ever in their history; so would the Capitals succumb to the Dallas Stars Syndrome tonight? Time to find out. Additionally, Brooks Orpik was yet again out, so Madison Bowey would be in and partnered with Christian Djoos again, and we would once again be blessed with Alternate Captain John Carlson.
At the start of the game, it looked like the Dallas Stars Syndrome was back and better than ever. Halfway through the first, Jason Spezza got a breakaway and beat Braden Holtby five-hole. Ten seconds later, Tyler Pitlick intercepted an errant Holtby clearing attempt and scored on the wraparound while Holtby was scrambling back to his net, and suddenly it was 2-0 Stars, and it felt like we were back to the same old thing again.
It turns out playing the Stars means that the entire game is going to be weird. Forty seconds into the second period, Nicklas Backstrom scored on a weird, short-side, no-angle goal to make it 2-1. A strong start to the period. But the Stars must legitimately do something to Holtby’s brain; after the bad clear in the first, he high-sticked an opposing player three minutes into the second, a penalty which had to be served by Chandler Stephenson. That particular play didn’t hurt them, but halfway through the period the Caps turned it over behind the net and it found its way to Jamie Benn, who made it 3-1 Stars.
But the Caps, somehow, found some fight. Two minutes later, Brett Connolly batted the puck out of the air and into the net baseball-style to make it 3-2. And in the third period on the power play, Evgeny Kuznetsov scored another no-look, no-angle goal to tie the game 3-3.
Of course, a game this crazy would require overtime, and it was an incredibly high-paced, exciting overtime period. The height of the excitement came when Carlson hooked Tyler Seguin on a breakaway. He was rewarded a penalty shot, which Holtby stopped with the glove. But after all that excitement and those weird goals, the game ended on a turnover at the blue line when Jakub Vrana lost his balance, and Jason Dickinson scored to win the game for the Stars 4-3.
The Caps were outshot 37-32 (7-1 in overtime), won 53.4% of faceoffs, went 1/3 on the power play, and their penalty kill remained perfect, keeping the Stars to 0/2 on their power play chances. Holtby saved 33/37.
Dmitrij Jaskin had a great game defensively, and played in by far his best game thus far. Bowey also had his best game as a Cap, creating great offensive chances and getting lots of shots, and making great blocks and defensive plays; he and Djoos had a good game.
Ultimately, even though the Caps made a comeback, the Dallas Stars Syndrome was too much to overcome and made a victim of the Caps again. But, considering the horrible start and the fact that it’s the Stars, getting the one point is a heck of a consolation.
Current record: 5-4-3
What’s Going on in the World of the Caps
Roster Moves
There were a flurry of roster moves that happened this week. Brooks Orpik didn’t play in either game this week, so the Capitals called up Aaron Ness on October 31 to sit the bench as the seventh defenseman. He was sent back down to Hershey on November 4. Also on October 31, Travis Boyd was sent to Hershey on a conditioning assignment, as he is getting ready to come back from his injury. In his two games on the stint, he recorded one assist. And on November 4, Nathan Walker was placed on waivers, presumably to make room for Boyd’s return. As I write this, there is no word on whether he cleared or not.
Bowey and Connolly Participate in Playworks Hockey Extravaganza
Tumblr media
On October 29, Madison Bowey and Brett Connolly participated in Playworks Washington, D.C.'s annual Hockey Extravaganza at Payne Elementary School in Washington, D.C. You can check the details out here.

Player of the Week
Tumblr media
Dmitrij Jaskin is finally getting comfortable, and by far had his best week as a Washington Capital. He has played in nine games so far this season, including the two this week, and is looking better and better each game. After playing eight pretty good minutes against the Habs, his time on ice rocketed up to fifteen minutes against the Stars. The game against the Stars was by far his best, looked very impressive, and caught the attention of the coaching staff. Defense is the main part of his game; he was on ice for only one goal against in Montreal, and none against Dallas, coming mostly in neutral and defensive zone deployment.
