Alright here we go! A little more Dean. A little more into their story and how they grow. Also more of reader and maggie too! Honestly i enjoyed this chapter but some of it im not too fond of because i was having major brain fog once in awhile and would just force it out. I also didnt edit almost at all and honestly i never really do. I always forget even though i intend to edit the chapters. Thanks everyone!!
ALONE AGAIN
Chapter 4
Dean Winchester x Y/N
Warnings: flirting and mentions of sex or signs of sexual acts
………………………………….
“What are you doing out here?”
“I asked if i could walk the property, get my bearings on the place, wanted to look around.”
“Can i join you? You can say no, it’s alright, just thought you might want some company.”
“Yeah, that would be alright, normally i would walk with Maggie but she was on a run with Glenn and busy today. Right now i am just looping back around to go back to the house. Drop off these strawberries before we meet for Otis’s memorial.”
“I caught these rabbits for maybe cooking up a stew tonight, sorry if this bothers you. Some people dont like being around dead animals or fresh kill.”
“No its alright, i understand and it doesnt bother me.”
The two of you walked the treeline. Slowly circling back to the house. Dean asked a few basic “get to know you” questions and you made small talk. It felt so similar to the conversation you had with Maggie or even Carol. He told you how he met Ricks group before Rick came along. On a highway it was backed up with traffic and the bombings started on the city. Everyone had kind of gravitated towards each other. He was traveling with Dale, the older man with a fishing hat, in the RV. They werent blood related but apparently was the closest thing to a relative he had. A small road trip to mourn the loss of Deans brother and father. They had recently passed in a car accident and it was right before the world started to end.
When Dean talked you would glance over and watch his movements. You couldnt lie to yourself and say you werent a little wary of him. Even though You got the same feelings about him as you had maggie. The way his grin lit up his eyes and true his laugh sounds. Something real, and innocent. Nothing like Shane. That man… he definitely was the one not to trust. Dean however… you just met this man and yet you felt the need to stay near him. All of this was so new to you. Thinking youd spend the apocalypse alone and not finding out you could trust a few people on this earth. Some of the few left alive. But for every person you could trust, there was always at least one you couldnt. That thought would always keep you on your toes.
“Well it looks like we have a memorial to go to soon, how do you feel about these things?”
“Honestly… they make me uncomfortable especially when i dont know the person, what about you?”
“Even though i just went to one for my brother and father… its like i cant remember how to act or think during one. I know how to be respectful and quietly stand on the sidelines but what to say to someone grieving? Thats what i struggle with.”
“Maybe we could struggle silently together?”
“That sounds nice actually, thank you. Im still trying to get used to all the people i met on the highway. Dale has attached himself to andrea well and everyone likes him. Its not like i hate everyone but i kind of have my guard up. Never know when youre going to lose someone, especially someone important to you.”
And with that comment he glances sideways at you and you catch something in his eyes. Something… innocent. Like a child learning how to leap into a pool for the first time and be okay with feeling scared yet brave to follow through with it. The thought of him looking at you in anyway except cruel brings a blush to your cheeks and you look the opposite way to try and hide it. Thankful for a sunset soon because the red glow from the sky could hide it hopefully.
After the simple memorial for Otis, everyone went their separate ways. Unfortunately Hershel seemed a little more timid tonight towards Ricks group and even you now. So you talked to maggie about not sleeping in the house but had nowhere else to sleep. Thankfully Dale was nearby when he overheard and brought up an extra tent in his RV that you could use. Politely thanking him, you both head off for the RV. Dean was sitting in the RV chatting with andrea and carol and dale asked him to help you set up the tent considering it was getting darker by the minute outside.
“If you want we can set up by my tent?”
“Sure if thats not going to bother you, i might be a loud sleeper for all you know. Wouldnt want to be bothersome to anyone.”
“Nah that’s alright as long as you dont mind hearing me snore from mine.” He chuckled at his own joke and flashed you that boyish grin again. Was he flirting? No he couldnt be. Not with you. People like maggie, beth, lori… they were beautiful and deserved to be pined after. You… no one treated you that way.
There was a campfire that night and carol passed out the strawberries youd foraged. Everyone thanked you for the treat and it made you feel better about being with the group. Earning that bit of respect and trust just now… The fire was crackling and everyone was having little conversations throughout the group. You sat there observing everything around you. The breeze was a little chilly that night and it made goose bumps on your skin. Crickets out in the background and twinkling stars above. This left you wondering… if you hadnt followed Maggies instructions… where would you be…
“Need a blanket? The air has a chill tonight.”
“Oh, uh sure. Thank you Dean.” His surprising gesture brought you from your wandering thoughts. Your mind felt at peace when he was around. The blanket he brought was spread across your lap as he pulled a chair up next to yours and you flashed him a smile.
“Never thought we would find this type of place. Peaceful, quiet, away from the infected.” Dean was looking at the fire but clearly speaking to you.
“Yeah it wasnt long ago that I was running away from the dead with no place to go but away from them. I guess anything can change in a moment right? Is it bad to think… nevermind I shouldn’t say that.”
“No, no its okay, whats on your mind?”
Dean was looking at you now, concern laced in his eyebrows and lips slightly parted. You watched as his nostrils flared when he breathed and with a deep breath you closed your eyes. Deciding you can just say whats on your mind to this man you didnt know well… courage taking over… or maybe just dumb luck on your side…
“What if this place doesnt last? People could still die… everyone here… nice things dont last forever.”
“Youre right, we have no idea, everyone could die tonight.”
“What?”
“What, did you expect me to lighten the mood and spare you the optimistic standpoint and sugar coat everything? Screw that nonsense. This is the world we live in now. We protect our people as much as we can. Fught until our last breathe. Mourn who weve lost. But sugar coat it? Thats not me. I lost everything before and while i dont ever want that to happen again, it’s inevitable.”
“You really know how to talk to a girl dont you? Im sorry about your family though. Its too bad i couldnt meet them, your brother sounded smart and funny.”
“Oh, and what does that make me?”
“The older brother who protected his family and cared deeply about them.”
This seemed to put him in a stunned silence. Not expecting such a serious and kind thing to be said of him. Even surprising yourself though because normally you’d be snarky with any male person. With Dean you wanted genuine and not judge him based off past experiences. Everything went so well with maggie and all the others… why not give Dean a chance? Not all men are snakes right?
Deans shocked face relaxed into a small smile as he looked towards you. With that you decided to make a bold move. So out of character for you these days you thought but maybe not anymore with recent events. You lifted up the blanket a bit and nudged your head to signal Dean he could scoot closer and share the blanket. It was chilly even with a fire… it was just a nice gesture a friend would make… nothing else.
A couple days on the Greene farm have passed. You and Dean spent all of it side by side. Both helping around the farm with various tasks and searching for Sophia. Then Joining Rick and Shane with training the group on gun safety or Target practice yesterday. More experience with a gun would come in handy for you, you thought, to add along with your machete and knife.
With This passing time, you notice yourself opening up more to Dean. Telling him all about the pets you had growing up and the (not so impressive or exciting) college experience you had. But he seemed to take it all so well. Laughing at your jokes or lightly teasing in little ways that you never wanted it to stop. You had to admit… his smile was contagious and his laugh infectious. Everyone loved him around the farm and you were starting to think he was your best friend here. Definitely the most attractive friend you ever had and maybe that wasn’t so bad.
“Your flirting is getting weak Y/N.” Dean was standing by the RV door in his (legally shouldnt be that tight) shirt and jeans. His grin made you feel weak in the knees when you looked over at him.
“What? You think hiding your favorite flannel is flirting? Wow Winchester, you really need to open your eyes more, because I admit there’s flirting. Just not that.” The wink you gave him was the boldest part of that exchange. Not the flirting. Not the words you spoke. The wink. Youre not sure what came over you every time that damn Winchester was around you.
With that you were off. Finding either another chore to help with or a certain farmer’s daughter to talk about boys with. Honestly, you hoped to find Maggie sooner rather than later because you could feel Dean’s eyes on you as you walked away. Leaving him to head out with Daryl for another Sophia search.
While walking away from Dean in search of Maggie, you couldnt help but think of Dean standing there just now. The way his eyes sparkled when the sunlight caught it, his muscles flexing in his arms, or the stupidly handsome grin he had around you. Could you admit… you were growing a feeling other than friendship… wheres that damn Maggie when you needed her.
“Hey Beth, have you seen Maggie?”
“No Y/N, sorry. Maybe try the stable, she likes brushing the horses.”
“Okay thanks!” Beth had a beautiful smile and she was so naive of everything going on. She had her beau, Jimmy, but you also knew Hershel wasnt too happy about it. Maggie seemed to have a thing with Glenn even though it was a secret that they were sneaking around. If only Hershel found out… he might kick everyone off his farm.
The stables seemed quiet but Maggie could still be around, so you called out for her.
“Maggie! You in here? I gotta talk to you about something thats been on my mind. Some girl talk if you can believe that.”
… No response.
So you walk past the few stables and thats when you hear shuffling. Maybe a possum is stuck in a stable? As you look around to see if anyones around or if a horse is feeling uneasy, the door to the empty stable flies open. This scares you and makes you jump, squealing in surprise. Relaxing once you see its Maggie… but you can tell someone else still hasnt come out. Her shirt was all wrinkled and hay in her hair.
“Nice choice Mags… a stable? Get creative.” Winking at your friend, she starts blushing and giggling.
“Glenn get out, weve been caught red handed.” Glenn comes stumbling out of the stable and you start doubling over in a laughing fit. This makes glenn start to freak out over the noise and tries to shush you until Maggie joins in on the fun.
“Oh my god you guys are going to get us in trouble with Hershel, shh!”
“Oh relax glenn its not that bad, just make sure to get the hay out of your hair and dont leave together.”
“Come on Y/N lets just go and leave him be to wallow in getting caught together.” Maggie whisked you away to the treeline for a walk. Even with everything going on she had heard your comment when looking for her.
“So you gonna tell me what's going on?” She had her arm linked with yours as you walked. You were looking out towards the camp site in the trees and sighed heavily.
“It's been so long since I had friends… or anything resembling a relationship. Not even a crush in years on a boy.” Slowly coming to a stop and picking up a small daisy you found, twirling it in your fingers as you thought how to word your feelings. Maggie was growing to be a good friend to you and could be trusted with anything you spoke to her.
“Is this about Dean? I can tell he's fond of you. The two of you have spent a lot of time together and even when you aren't together, I see him looking for you. Making sure you're okay even when apart. You like him too, because you're smiling right now as I bring him up.” She flashes you a wide smile as she sits down in the grass.
“We are friends… but… I feel a pull towards him. Ever since I saw him arrive at the farm that morning and then the way his eyes lit up when we met for the first time. Do you feel that way with Glenn? Like theres an instant connection and you just dont want anything to pull it away from you?”
“I think i do… this world can be lonely. This new one we live in. Loneliness is just a side effect though. We don’t have to choose that way to live now.” Maggie seemed serious as she spoke, clarity and stubbornness in her voice all at once. You nodded as she glanced up at you.
“I havnt been with anyone since… well it doesnt matter when… just been a long time. But, I have been alone this whole time. Thats why it was so hard to accept you all… and trust. Whether it was trusting you, Dean, Rick, or even myself. Trust that I could let myself open up or be around others. Now that i am doing that and making friends, its almost impossible not to reach for Dean more. Maybe he can fill the void i have been dealing with for so long.”
“No one should have to fill that for you unless you can make yourself happy first. And no, im not talking about sex.” She winks at you and laughs to herself, trying to lighten the mood for you. “Dont ever feel rushed or push yourself too hard. Just see where things take you, but shake your ass when you do it. I caught him staring at it yesterday.” This made you laugh and turn red as a tomato.
“Youre right. I can only count on myself in the end, but having company along for the ride doesn’t hurt anything. Maybe he can teach me some hunting, it doesnt hurt to learn and then we can spend time together away from the group.”
“That sounds like a plan to me… find a good stump along the way…”
“Maggie! You’re unbelievable! Is sex the ONLY thing you think about now?” You were shocked and threw your daisy at her, laughing so hard there were tears streaming down your cheeks.
“Come on lets get back, theres probably more chores or ass shaking we can do.”
“Maggie stop! God you’re ridiculous!” Theres no way running towards this farm was a mistake. You had lucked out beyond belief finding this group of people. Maybe the apocalypse didnt have to be so lonely.
