5e subclasses I wish were better

D&D 5e's subclass system is really cool and a great addition to the game. However, inevitably, some options will be better than others. There are several subclasses that have super cool flavor or potential that they don't live up to. I'm going to discuss several of them any some quick and dirty ideas on how they could be improved.

From the artificer we have the alchemist, which isn't a bad subclass, but I don't think it captures my fantasy of what an alchemist could be. It tries to be a hybrid of blaster and supporter and I think it falls short. I think the alchemist could benefit from having more customization options with the potions it creates and not having those potions be tied to a roll to see what you get. Something like a potion version of the artificer's replicate magic item feature would be nice, so they could make specific potions for the right circumstances. Like if you need to be sneaky but one member of the party is a tank in heavy armor with piss-poor dexterity, the alchemist could whip up a potion of cat's grace. Additionally, I think letting them make something like Minecraft's splash potions could be cool. They could throw a potion at an enemy to apply effects like blindness or vulnerability on them or throw them at allies to aid from distance. As is, I think the alchemist is just a worse life cleric with a few extra feature.

Barbarian has a few mediocre subclasses, but two I think do not match how cool they sound are the storm herald and the beast. The storm herald sounds so cool: a barbarian that channels the power and fury of a storm! What we got instead was basically a totem warrior but the choices are much less impactful. I think the fix for this one is to just power up the storm choices to make them more powerful and on par with other barbarians. The beast barbarian might be the most dissipointing for me. When I think of a beast barbarian I think of some werewolf: the apocalypse-style furious force of nature, and that is not what we got. I can sum up my problems with this barbarian in one sentence: if you want to make a character based around unarmed combat, the things they can do with unarmed combat need to be be equal to or better than what they dan do by picking up a weapon. The natural weapon options for the beast barbarian are all pretty mediocre. They are out-damaged by a great weapon, the healing you get from the teeth is pathetic, and the tail's reach is made obsolete by picking up a polearm. They also become even more obsolete when magic weapons come into play. I think the beast should be redesigned from the ground up to be useful, giving it actual werewolf powers that boost its damage and give it more utility. It is good at exploration though.

The whispers bard is really cool in concept, but I think it falls short, especially when compared to other bards. Its coolest feature is the ability to transform into someone who just died, but as written it's super limiting because you only keep the disguise for a long rest and the person has to die. What's worse is that any other bard can almost completely replicate this ability. Consider this: I play an eloquence bard and pick up disguise self and maybe speak with dead. I can now disguise myself as someone else whenever I want, learn about the person if they're dead, and since its basically impossible for eloquence bards to fail a persuasion/intimidation/deception check, nobody will figure out its a disguise without magic. And I get all the crazy good benefits of being an eloquence bard on top of that. Fixing the whispers bard would require making the disguises much better, maybe letting you assume a previous disguise whenever you want would help.

I think the spores druid suffers from trying to fill two roles and not being the best at either of the. It wants to be a front-line fighter and a necromancer at the same time, but isn't that good at necromancy and the moon druid beats it up and takes its lunch money at front-lining. I think the spores druid should have ignored the front-line aspects and gine all in on necromancy. The idea of a front-line druid is good, but it should be its own thing. To make it stand out from the moon druid, this druid could have ways to customize its combat forms and maybe get good armor and weapons, giving more flexibility than the moon druid gets.

I think the two worst fighters are the arcane archer and the purple dragon knight. The arcane archer isn't bad, but it is a worse version of another option. If you play a battle master and use a bow, you are a better arcane archer than the arcane archer. The arcane archer does get some abilities battle masters don't but battle masters get the additional benefit that if they get into a melee fight and have to use a sword, they don't immediately lose all their cool features. The purple dragon knight tries to be a support fighter, which is a cool, but the execution is awful because its support features are tied to other fighter features rather than being something they can just do. I think a commander style fighter who can give other characters orders and support them in battle would be awesome, but it would have to be redesigned from the ground up.

Mons in general need some major boosts. Unfortunately with onednd coming, I din't see us getting a book that does for monks what Tasha's did for rangers. One of the biggest problems can be seen when comparing monks to sorcerers. A sorcerer who runs out of sorcery points is still a perfectly good caster while a monk who runs out of ki points becomes vastly worse. I think to help the monk in general they should either get more ki points or a lot of features should be detached from ki points so they don't run out as fast. For example, you could remove flurry of blows as a feature entirely and instead give monks way more attacks. Lie they could start with 2 hit multiattack at lv 1 and scale fast from there. This would help keep ki points from running out as fast and free up the bonus action for other cool stuff. A lot of monk subclasses suffer from their core features also using ki points. This means that those features compete with flurry of blows and stunning strike for your ki point usage and will make you run out faster. Two subclasses that especially show this problem are the four elements and astral self. Both need to spend so much ki on using their cool new features that they'll run out so much faster than other monks, who can remain useful longer. I think that the four elements monk should get spell slots instead of spending ki on their spell-like effects and the astral self should be able to pull up their stand astral body for free. The sun soul and ascendent dragon also need to be redesigned from the ground up to not be complete ass.

For ranger I think all the subclasses except hunter are now good thanks to tasha's. I will say that the lore for the hunter is basically nonexistent and it and the monster slayer could be fused into one subclass and probably be better.

For rogues the inquisitive is just non-viable when used in any game i've run or played in because it relies on a style of investigation and investigation in combat that nobody I've ever played with uses. The mastermind is cool as a support rogue, but I think it needs stronger features that play into a style making it a great planner and supporter.

Most of the sorcerer classed are fine but several of them, particularly the dragon and storm sorcerers, have been hit hard by power creep and have fallen behind. I think every pre-Tasha's subclass needs an expanded spell list to bring it up to the level of the aberrant mind, clockwork soul, and lunar sorcerers. This would also really help dragon and storm sorcerers, who benefit from using spells of a certain damage type. Getting those spells for free would ensure they always get spells that benefit from their abilities without using up their precious few known spells. The dragon sorcerer should also get updated to allow for gem dragons to be used as your ancestors. I'm honestly surprised Fizban's didn't do this.

All wizards are good but I have an issue with the school of X subclasses. I feel like a wizard that specializes in one particular school of magic should feel like they are better at using that school than anyone else. I don't get that with the conjuration or transmutation wizards. Conjuration wizards aren't better conjurers than any other wizard, same for transmutation wizards. For the conjuration wizards, I know the dev team was afraid of making minions overpowered and overreacted by nerfing subclasses like the conjuration wizard and beastmaster ranger. I don't know why the transmutation wizard gets so few good features. I think they should get features that improve their conjuration and transmutation spells, respectively. Conjuration wizards should buff their summons and transmutation wizards should get something that could let them... transform better? borrow wildshape? I'm not sure, but it could definitely be better than what we got. Graviturgy wizards suffer from having multiple abilities tied to conjuration, forcing you to choose between using your subclass features and great wizard spells that are usually better. War wizards try to be a combination of abjuration and evocation wizards and just end up being worse than either. They should get better abilities from both subclasses, plus maybe some fighter stuff to represent them being trained for war, like armor proficiency and maybe even action surge. 2 levels of fighter to pick up action surge and armor is a pretty common multiclass for wizards anyway so why not give one wizard that option officially? Wizards live and die more on their spell selection so subclasses aren't as big of a deal for them as it is for other classes. Still, wizard subclasses with cool powers like divination, chronurgy, scribes, and bladesingers do tend to stand out and be more interesting.

even if i had been the sort of person to have an interest in dom battles, that whole thing combined with a lot of other subtle things and the fact that almost everything is on a discord server out of the public eye at this point gives me uncomfortable vibes, and the fact that these copypasta response posts always seem to have this weird unspoken emphasis on the real problem being that it's visible in public gives me, as someone trapped in an abusive family of exactly that type, who's mother has told me this phrase exactly word for word, MASSIVE "there's some things we don't talk about outside this family." vibes.

the fact that literally nothing is really particularly known or spoken about lightning as a flight outside of people being like "uhh spreadsheets" makes me even more nervous of my own flight, because in my experience dramasphere silence like that only means that they're just very good at hiding where the drama is happening. no news is not the same thing as neutral news. no news means the news isn't getting out. there was also that major dom leader guy with a game of thrones name a year or two back who if i remember correctly did something along the lines of enter himself on his own ticket spreadsheet for a dom raffle he was running so that he could draw himself to win prizes, then when someone asked about that he exploded on them about how they're an entitled brat and ranted on about how as dom leaders they work so hard and are entitled to a cut of the prizes of their work? then fucked off to plague where he proceeded to do some other questionable things i don't remember? that was a thing, and that didn't exactly make me feel less weird something not right here vibes from what little contact i had with the lightning dom situation. i just get a huge feeling of guilt tripping from all of the few interactions i've ever seen of the dom scene interacting with anyone who asks questions and i also get the impression of this heavy unspoken frowning upon anyone speaking about anything going on in-flight outside it.

heres my 2 cents on the eyes and people’s reactions to them since this is my blog and i’m not here to pick fights

1. LOVE the eyes im pissing myself holy guacamole!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. i see people’s issue with the body horror and i hear them, but here’s the thing. a) there are ways around it/to avoid it in this specific instance, but b) this is the 5th anniversary of flight rising and prior to it’s very inception it has come with body horror. this isn’t just about plague flight existing and the inevitable shitstorm that comes with ROR submissions every year. i’m talking the bone fiend, kamaitachis waving around those bone stalkS??? (and the uhh the other ones too. the ones that walk on em. disgusting), the gods themselves (shademom drooling everywhere? close ur damn mouth??), emperors, etc. (also, Arcane is pretty body-horror heavy if we’re being real here!! and seriously kamaitachis have always grossed me out)

anyway yeah, i’m not trying to dismiss those voices whose feedback is negative. body horror issues, trypophobia, etc. are very real and concerning and it’s AWESOME when other people take that into consideration!! having said that, part of dealing with those types of fears and aversions - saying this as someone who has some myself - is knowing very, very well that whole thing about “life doesn’t come with a trigger warning.” people with phobias know that MUCH better than people without them, and part of that being in your life is taking steps yourself to deal with those triggers in situations where you know you can’t avoid them. on the internet that is much easier than elsewhere and no, it’s not at all unreasonable to try to make our corners of the internet a little more habitable, a little more friendly and welcoming, than maybe they otherwise would be. i’m not at all opposed to that.

but asking staff (and the multitudes of people who like and even adore these ~edgier~ aspects of the game) to change or remove those features for the sake of phobias is not rational, nor is it fair in the purest sense of the term. if you know you have a body horror fear and you are choosing to play a game in which body horror features heavily, it’s YOUR responsibility, first and foremost, to guide yourself through that. yes, it actually sucks that we can’t put a filter on dragon eyes the same way we can on search terms and such, but if you are bound and determined to stay in this game regardless, you need to consider other coping mechanisms for your own wellbeing. everyone’s coping mechanisms are different and only you can know what works for you, so I can’t tell you exactly what to do, and clearly, avoiding the trigger at all costs works most effectively; but you know as well as I do that that is not always an option, and it’s not always going to be an option in this game either.

it is AWESOME when other people hear your worries and say “that’s totally called for, and I will do my best to accommodate you by removing these fears from your periphery as much as possible.” That can include things like CWs/TWs wherever applicable and possible, or asking staff to implement other features that could work for you! but asking the creators of the game to change or remove major aspects, such as one of the very concepts the core lore revolves around (i.e. elemental magic changing physical features!!) is not a solution to handling your phobias.

fortunately, staff HAS thought of other solutions. we have eye-covering apparel which pre-dates the eye changes by years. we have the scattersights being dropped in coli and being brewable so that even if staff doesn’t continue to release them, they will be available as an option in the future. you can exalt or sell dragons with eyes that make you uncomfortable. you can breed them again to try for better, more normal eyes (which will be much, much more common than the creepy ones!).

likewise, you have lots and lots and LOTS of fair warning from other players that this game may contain things that make you uncomfortable - LOADS of people on this site are more than happy to use trigger/content warnings, even for stuff that appears repeatedly in canon lore. that is literally the best anyone else can do for you to accommodate your phobias, and when they can’t, they cant. but lots of people ARE doing it! once again, flight rising’s base lore revolves around weird anatomy and magical anomalies and it always has. you cannot ask them to change that 5 years into the game. there are lots of other dragon-related games out there that are cutesy and harmless and don’t have this stuff, and if none of those float your boat (admittedly FR is pretty unique even as far as petsites go!) maybe there needs to be a push for a similar petsite without the gore??? there’s clearly a market for it, but that’s another subject entirely.

all of you who take issue with this, and i mean this so sincerely: I commend you and praise you for facing your fears anyway for the love of this game and sake of your dragons. i understand that when you get invested so deeply in a game like this, to have your fears brandished in your face is an insult and it hurts to have to juggle that with your love of your dragons. you rightfully don’t want to face being triggered in a game/space that you love and which, under most other circumstances, is the opposite of stressful for you. i agree, that 100% fucking sucks. which is precisely why I say you should be prepped with other coping mechanisms if and when it’s not possible to avoid seeing it on occasion, again, for your own safety and wellbeing.

because this game has been “rated PG13″ or whatever the fuck since it began. body horror has never once not been part of the lore. you need to know and accept that going in, and perhaps assess whether or not it’s the right game for you, just like you’d assess a movie or a TV show beforehand and check to see online like, does it have my triggers? when/where are they so I can try to skip that part? or does it contain them, but in small enough amounts that I’ll be okay, and the benefit of watching the whole thing outweighs the potential trigger? yknow, like, all that stuff is ours to assess for ourselves personally before we ever do anything, including playing this game.

that DOESNT MEAN that people should be dicks to you and brandish your triggers in your face. it DOESN’T mean that you can’t ask for CW/TWs, or other accessibility features and solutions to these problems (I only listed a few, but that doesn’t mean that alternatives aren’t being discussed, and that’s also awesome!!!!!). it just means that you are playing a game that has been pretty open since it’s start about how it includes violence and body horror and once again, it is first and foremost your own responsibility to handle your triggers in a positive and healing way. im actually gonna go so far as to say that if you are staying, maybe FR is a good place to practice dealing with those triggers in a productive manner, as opposed to “the real world” or w/e, you know? idk roast me it’s just an idea.

anyway tl;dr i hear you and i’m one of you but it’s actually not cool to ask staff/other players to change major facets of the lore now that we’re this far in. handle your shit. offer alternative solutions on the forums, campaign for similar-but-safer games, work on your own coping mechanisms and so forth, ask for CW/TWs when applicable (I mean, maybe FR does need a better warning about the stuff the lore includes when you sign up???), all of that is amazing and fine, but this kind of stuff isn’t getting removed from the site/lore and we all need to be on the same page about that

(P)REVIEW: CASIO EX-FR200 Action Cam

Editor’s Note: It should be known that this (p)review was conducted a while back with a pre-release version of the camera, but we still wanted to get the info out there. The full-on version, with fully cooked software, is now available, and we’ll hopefully get around to reviewing the whole shebang sometime soon!

Third time’s the charm.

CASIO has released the third installment of their EX-FR modular outdoor “action” camera series with the new EX-FR200. Unlike last year’s incremental EX-FR100 (released after 2014’s inaugural EX-FR10), however, the FR200 brings two big new features into play that should revolutionize the lineup and finally give the series a practical leg-up over the competition that the previous two didn’t quite deliver.

180° and 360° video and photography...

...are growing in popularity, and with two of the biggest social networks, Facebook and YouTube, now supporting 360° images and video, in addition to the push for consumer VR in the Android and gaming PC markets, there have been a number of solutions popping up for creating 360° content. On the high-end, it generally involves expensive, multi-camera rigs; on the consumer side, the focus has been smaller, easy-to-use devices that necessarily sacrifice overall quality.

Enter the EX-FR200

In the most simplistic terms, CASIO has essentially taken the EX-FR100 body and slapped a massive 185° lens on it (...okay, so there is a bit more to it, but that general idea is on-point). They have also expanded on the previous model’s ability to communicate with devices beyond its dedicated controller - so a single controller can now connect with two cameras.

When combined with their 360° mount and CASIO’s EXILIM 360 video stitching software, the consumer space has gained an affordable multi-camera setup, which should provide a seamless, end-user friendly, camera-to-social 360° capturing experience. We say “should provide,” because at the time we got to play with the pre-production version of the EX-FR200, the camera was pretty much sorted, but the software was still in development, and as a result we had trouble taking full advantage of the device and the content it produced.

Taking it around the block:

The camera itself is robustly built, but the massive protruding lens is vulnerable and should be kept capped whenever not in use. It’s fully weather-sealed and withstood our unscientific, running-around-in-a-typhoon weatherproofing test. It carries over the same controller as the EX-FR100, with its responsive and bright 3-inch touch screen. Most options are fairly easy to access, though the exposure compensation requires a few too many steps.

It sports a 1 / 2.3-inch CMOS backlit sensor, resolving 21 megapixels, but due to crop factors, lens aspect ratios, etc., stils are limited to 12 megapixels, which keeps it in line with higher-end smartphones. The EX-FR200 also shoots stills at 3888 x 3888px in 180°, 7456 x 1864 in panoramic mode, and 3232 x 2424 in super-wide-angle mode.

It can shoot in full 180° in standard 16:9 aspect ratio wide-angle, a panoramic 4:1 aspect ratio, and Instagram-friendly 1:1 videos at resolutions ranging from 4K UHD down to 640 x 480. depending on the framerate you choose. The EX-FR200 can shoot slow motion at 120 and 240 fps in 720p and 480p, respectively. Driving all of this is the same HS.V3 EXILIM imaging engine as the EX-FR100, though it appears to be optimized well for the new lens setup.

In testing, the video quality was significantly better than the EX-FR100, which is good news as this iteration will likely be used for video far more than it’s predecessors were. When shooting 1080p or lower resolutions, there is the option to use electronic image stabilization, and like the FR100 it comes in two levels. Unlike the FR100, however, the first level is quite usable; the second level still reduces the quality enough that the stabilization is negated.

In 180° mode and super-wide-angle 4K mode, not only is there no image stabilization, the camera doesn’t output imagery to the remote so you can’t effectively frame your shots. The extreme width of the lens means you’d definitely get what you want in the shot, but after you set it up and hit record, you’re just winging it.

Actual 180° and 360° footage is decent. It can’t compare to multi-million-yen professional multi-camera rigs, but in the consumer space, it’s a real step up from the Ricoh Theta and Kodak Pixpro SP360. It will be interesting to see how it compares with the Nikon Key Mission 360.

Quality-wise, the 185° lens will of course result in softness toward the edge, so overall image quality takes a bit of a hit, which is to be expected. For the super-wide-angle, standard aspect ratio images, it is degraded further as it appears to be cropping the sensor to get the correct field of view. It’s on par with the 1st-generation EX-FR10 (MORE), which wasn’t bad, but if you care more about overall photo quality than you do about the 180° FOV, you’d be better off with the EX-FR100 (MORE).

When paired with a second camera, the EX-FR200 can also take full 360° images and video, or it can be paired with the EX-FR100 for different creative options, whether that’s self-shooting, picture in picture, or just capturing different angles of the same subject.

None of this would mean anything if you couldn’t use what you shoot, and to that end, CASIO has drastically improved the way in which users can interact with their images and videos through the EXILIM album app for both android and iOS, as well as their EXILIM 360 app for Windows.

In the final versions of the software, the mobile app can collate what you’ve shot into galleries based on when the images and videos were shot and automatically processes the spherical 180° media for panning views. Users should also be able to share images or sections of the images from the app. However, we weren’t able to test this fully because the pre-release beta software we had wasn’t fully ready for use. (Editor’s Note: That software is now fully-baked, and we’re hoping to get our hands back on another EX-FR200 to put it to the test.)

Additionally, there is an EXILIM 360 PC and Mac app that not only lets people view their 180° media, but also exports videos and photos from CASIO’s spherical format to the current web-standard cylindrical 360 format used by YouTube and Facebook (the kind that allow users to view and pan through 180° and 360° content on social media). The software can also stitch together footage from two linked EX-FR200s for full 360° images. Thus far we’ve only had one EX-FR200 to play with, so we couldn’t test the quality of full-360 and see how well the stitching process works.

We had better luck with the EXILIM 360 software, though sadly only after we’d have to return the camera, so by the time we could see how the 180°footage looked when processed, it was too late to then go out and shoot to to the camera’s strengths, fully review the EX-FR200’s imaging capabilities, and produce content with it beyond random snapshots.

Verdict:

Despite the (admittedly pre-release) software issues and our inability to use the camera as fully as we’d have liked, My impressions were positive. Where the first two were nice concepts, what set them was their unique form factor, which only appealed to a niche audience. Adding 360° functionality now catapults it into a much broader market which has a lot of growth potential. And with most solutions either having very bad quality images in easy-to-use devices or good quality footage from expensive rigs with complex post production workflows. With the EX-FR200 CASIO has a chance to find a happy medium that can allow users to capture decent quality 360° media at a more reasonable price point.
