Rewriting Cobra Kai Season 2 to eliminate the love triangles
There's a lot to love about Cobra Kai. But I have to admit season 2 is a bit of a weak season. And one of the areas that I view as a weak point is with the teen romance and love triangles.
Love triangles are one of the cheapest sources of conflict, given that you're either pitting two girls against each other in a competition for a guy's love, or two guys against each other for a girl's love. We see both of those in season 2 with Robby/Sam/Miguel and Sam/Miguel/Tory.
Obviously, the pairings for the season of Sam/Robby and Miguel/Tory were rebounds because it's typical in a show like this to break up an endgame couple early, then have them get back together later. Thing is, the rivalries of Sam and Tory, and Miguel and Robby, already have a lot of meat for them that doesn't hinge on the relationships.
With Sam and Tory, it's kinda ridiculous that the whole rivalry is basically over Miguel's heart when it could've been about so much more. It could've been built more upon the wrong perceptions that they had of each other from their first encounter at the beach club in 2x04: Sam viewing Tory as a thief, and Tory viewing Sam as a privileged rival who's never had to deal with hardship.
With Robby and Miguel, the show focuses a lot on how Miguel views Robby as a rival in their affections for Sam, but not really about another source to their rivalry: Johnny. It would've been interesting if the rivalry was built around Robby's resentment towards Miguel for getting Johnny's attention and affection, and in turn for Miguel to feel conflicted about his anger towards Robby because he's aware about Robby being Johnny's son.
There's also the fact that I don't think Sam/Robby and Miguel/Tory really have chemistry compared to Sam/Miguel and Robby/Tory. Sam and Robby have more sibling vibes than romantic ones. In the case of Miguel and Tory, Tory pursued Miguel and he went along with it because she was offering herself as a rebound girl, and the whole thing felt like a temporary relationship to tide him over before he got back together with Sam (and he was a pretty bad boyfriend to her in turn).
So my solution to the mess is to, well...to fix the problem, you have to go back into season 1 and not have Sam break up with Miguel at the tournament. Keep Sam and Miguel in a relationship for the duration of season 2, while having Tory get together with Robby in season 2. Here's how that would go.
SEASON 1
Episode 9:
In this episode, Sam returned home, planning to come clean to her dad about Miguel (and prepared to take the risk of him not approving of the relationship because Miguel is in Cobra Kai), only for her mom to confront her about the hit and run and ground her. Because her phone was confiscated, she can't reach out to Miguel, who is becoming paranoid in light of Johnny's biased stories to him about Daniel and seeing Sam being friendly with Robby. He gets drunk, and tries to take a swing at Robby when he brings Sam over so she can explain the situation, accidentally hitting Sam. Subsequently, they break up after he refuses to apologize for resorting to violence on Robby, and she leaves the tournament early, unable to bear what Miguel's turned into under the Cobra Kai teachings, while Miguel fights dirty against Robby in the finals and wins.
The change:
Sam returns home, planning to come clean to her dad about Miguel. Her mom confronts her about the hit-and-run...but she isn't quick to ground Sam. First, Amanda asks Sam for her side of the story about the hit-and-run. This, I think, is a very necessary change because, in the canon episode, Amanda's a bit of a hypocrite here. She's rushing to judgment based solely on Johnny's word without hearing Sam's side of the events or considering the possibility that Johnny's being biased, something that she had chided Daniel for doing earlier (regarding Johnny bringing to his attention what Kyler and his gang had been doing to Miguel).
So Sam explains what happened: Yasmine was texting while driving and they collided with a car that was parked illegally in the street outside the All-Valley Sports Arena. They were prepared to get out and leave contact information when a drunk Johnny began banging on the backseat window, making them drive off out of fear for their safety.
While Sam has told her side of things, she's still grounded for not coming clean sooner. But before Amanda can confiscate Sam's phone, Sam brings up that she has plans to see Miguel that night and he'll be worried sick if he can't contact her. She comes clean to her mom about how, "You know about that viral video of the kid who beat up Kyler and his crew in the cafeteria a few months back? Well, I've been dating that kid for the last few months." And she explains everything: his name is Miguel Diaz, and he's a student at Cobra Kai, and she was planning on telling Daniel about all this.
Of course, Amanda is aware Daniel will probably not take the news that their daughter is dating a Cobra Kai well, given Daniel's personal beef with Cobra Kai (what with getting Armand Zakarian to jack up the rent on the strip mall, and Louie hiring his biker buddies to destroy Johnny's car as retaliation for the billboard penis), and how he's not above intruding on his daughter's social life (given what happened with Kyler). But Sam insists Miguel's a good person, and that if Amanda gets to know Miguel through and through, then she can help Sam stand up to Daniel when Daniel inevitably blows up. More importantly, her best friend Aisha's in Cobra Kai, and can also vouch for Miguel's character. Amanda agrees to Sam's idea, and lets her call Miguel to invite him over.
So Miguel abandons the Cobra Kais' party and comes over to the LaRussos' house. He's already feeling jealous and insecure, because he knows Sam is hiding their relationship from Daniel, and the previous day, he went to her house uninvited and saw her laughing and talking to Robby. This was right after he'd heard Johnny's biased story about Daniel "stealing" Ali from him. So when Amanda lets Miguel in, he's a bit on edge, but Amanda mistakes it as him just being nervous at him coming over to his girlfriend's fancy house. Nonetheless, she's quickly won over by Miguel's personality, and when she asks him about "Why did you take up karate?" determines that he's the real deal, especially when he mentions how he took up karate to defend himself from bullies (much like Daniel did).
But things change when Robby arrives at the house for a training session with Daniel. Robby and Miguel recognize each other, and immediately Miguel's insecurities come to his head. He tries to attack Robby, but Sam steps between them, calms Miguel down, and explains that whatever Miguel saw, it's not what it looks like. Robby's just a friend and a teen working for the LaRussos' dealership who is also being trained by Daniel in the art of Miyagi-Do. Miguel listens to her, accepts what she's saying, and relaxes, no longer seeing Robby as a threat to his affections for Sam. However, Sam also notices the disdainful look Robby showed the moment he saw Miguel, but can't figure out why as she nor her parents are aware that Robby is Johnny's son.
When Johnny and Daniel return home from their day out, they agree to a "Rocky III-style" match in Daniel's dojo, but find Robby there waiting, and also find Sam with Miguel and Amanda. Things get heated, the altercation where Daniel's trophy gets broken happens, and ultimately everyone blows up at each other:
Daniel is mad over the fact that his daughter is dating a Cobra Kai boy and about the whole fact that Robby is Johnny's son.
Johnny's mad at Daniel because Daniel is training his son. He is also offended by the fact that Daniel is mad about Miguel being in Cobra Kai, causing him to get defensive of Miguel.
In Johnny's rush to defend Miguel, he only succeeds in angering Robby, who's now mad at him for showing his favoritism for Miguel. Robby is also mad at Miguel for the fact that Sam is already taken.
Miguel is mad at Daniel for not approving of him, and mad at Johnny for escalating the situation.
Sam is mad at her dad for not reacting well to Miguel, and mad at Miguel and Robby for letting there be bad blood between them.
Amanda is mad at Johnny for terrorizing Sam, and also mad at Daniel for flipping out at Miguel.
So the whole thing ends with Johnny driving away angrily with Miguel, Daniel banishing Robby from the house and the dealership, Sam storming off to her bedroom in tears, and Daniel also being banished to the couch by Amanda.
Episode 10:
At the LaRusso house, everyone broods over the events of the previous night. Amanda puts Daniel in his place and calls him out on his behavior towards Robby and Miguel, with her saying "You really want Sam to shut you out again?" He apologizes to Sam and Amanda for losing it, and reluctantly agrees to sit down and get to know Miguel after the tournament.
Everything at the tournament is the same up until the conversation Sam has with Miguel right before the finals. She apologizes for her dad's behavior, and tells him that her dad wants to get to know him. Miguel accepts her apology, thanks her, and agrees that they'll talk after the tournament.
Subsequently, Sam stays for the finals rather than go home early. Miguel doesn't threaten to hurt Robby, and wanting to make the best impression for Daniel, he chooses to fight cleanly rather than exploit Robby's injury, an act that baffles Miguel's fellow Cobra Kai students. Even though the match ties at 2-2, Robby's injury puts him at too much of a disadvantage, and Miguel earns the winning point not by attacking Robby's shoulder, but by using the Crane Kick (to which he subsequently gives Daniel a bow of respect).
Subsequently, Sam is among those who run over to him, gives him an approving hug, and then goes over to check on Robby and Johnny. Meanwhile, Sam goes with Miguel to the victory celebration at Applebee's. And afterwards, he goes with her to her house for a sparring session of their own.
On the drive home, Robby is sullen about his second place finish, but Daniel assures him that he is as much of a winner as Miguel. Robby expresses concern that Cobra Kai is going to become the premier dojo in the Valley, but Daniel--bitter over Johnny's behavior towards his daughter, and Hawk's behavior in the semi-finals--replies, "Over my dead body", taking Robby to Mr. Miyagi's old house which he plans to convert into a full on dojo for Miyagi-Do.
The next day, Miguel comes over to the LaRussos' for dinner. He is hesitant, since besides what he's seen of Daniel, the only other things he knows about Daniel are from the biased narrative that Johnny gave him about what happened in 1984, and the way Daniel flipped out at seeing him. Daniel apologizes for his behavior the other day, but explains that the name Cobra Kai just brings up lots of bad memories with him. So we get the car scene from season 3 episode 9 where Daniel fills in the gaps about what Johnny didn't tell Miguel, and to further clarify why he doesn't trust Cobra Kai and Johnny, also brings up what happened when he was manipulated by Terry Silver and Mike Barnes. At the end of it, Daniel decides that he's okay with Miguel dating Sam, but this hasn't done anything to cool the blood between him and Johnny because of Hawk injuring Robby and Johnny's own actions with the hit-and-run.
SEASON 2:
Episodes 1 and 2:
So for season 2, Miguel's arc is about him being torn between Cobra Kai and his loyalty to Johnny, and his relationship with Sam and the new respect Daniel has for him. Sam and Miguel are still dating. Robby still doesn't like that Sam is with Miguel, and still dislikes Miguel because of Johnny's favoritism for him, but decides to stay friends with Sam after she convinces Daniel to take Robby in. Robby also tries to be civil to Miguel for Daniel's and Sam's sake. But with Miguel spending so much time with Sam and being practically a fixture at the LaRusso house, it's hard for Robby not to grow envious of him given all that other baggage.
Episode 3:
The season is mostly the same, up until episode 3 at Valley Fest. In canon, Daniel is having a hard time finding new students, who are put off by his chore-based training methods. To help get exposure, Daniel decides to hold a solemn karate demonstration with Sam and Robby at the upcoming Valley Fest fair. In canon, when Johnny hears about this, Cobra Kai interrupt them with a much more flashy demonstration of their own set to "Back in the Game" by Airbourne, winning over the crowd and stealing the spotlight from Miyagi-Do as Daniel and his students look on with contempt.
In this timeline, however, Valley Fest puts Miguel's loyalties to question. If nothing changes, and Cobra Kai hijacks the demo as happens in canon, Sam is mad at Miguel for raining on Miyagi-Do's parade and not telling her about it in advance. So Miguel, not wanting to jeopardize his relationship with Sam, or at the minimum interested in softening the blow, either gives Sam an advance tip-off and preemptive apology, or better yet, convinces Johnny to wait until Miyagi-Do has finished before they do their show (risking being called a pussy by Johnny). Sam still has some bitter feelings towards Cobra Kai for putting on a demo that overshadowed Miyagi-Do's, though accepts Miguel's apology about the matter, as happens in canon when she argues with Aisha about this at the beach club and they decide it's not worth fighting over.
Episode 4:
Episode 4 is where Sam's rivalry with Tory begins in canon. Daniel takes Robby and Sam to a beach club, where his attempts to promote Miyagi-Do to local parents are overshadowed by Cobra Kai's display at Valley Fest, with Aisha's mother praising the difference that Cobra Kai has made in her daughter's life. Meanwhile, Sam tries to make up with Aisha, who is upset about the slight against Cobra Kai in Daniel’s ad, but ends up in a quarrel with Tory, whom she accuses of stealing her mother's wallet (having witnessed Tory stealing liquor at the club beforehand). Tory responds by pushing Sam into a dessert table and walking away with Aisha.
Not much about this would change, especially where the rivalry between Sam and Tory is concerned, because it's important for me to note that in canon this inciting incident for the rivalry was before Tory hooked up with Miguel. That wasn't until the next episode.
Meanwhile, through circumstances, Tory also runs into Robby, befriends him, and enters into a relationship with him. In season 3, we see them form a connection after Robby joins Cobra Kai over how they're the ones who bore the blunt of the punishment for the school brawl, and their troubled home lives. So we see that here, with Tory also using elements of the playbook she used in the actual timeline to seduce Miguel, which in this case means convincing Robby that he needs to pretend that he's over Sam. Kreese finds out about the relationship between Robby and Tory, and since he's wanted to snag Robby this whole time, he decides to use Tory as a pawn to influence Robby, in hopes of both eventually getting Robby to join Cobra Kai while also getting revenge on Daniel for humiliating him and Terry Silver back in 1985.
Episode 5:
In episode 5, the mall fight still happens, but with Miguel taking Robby's place. It would work nicely since Miguel is Demetri's friend too. (Robby's on a date with Tory, which is why he's not here)
In this version of events, Sam and Miguel go to the mall with Demetri. Demetri is confronted and attacked by Hawk and several other Cobra Kai students as a reprisal for his Yelp review. Demetri flees into the food court, where Sam and Miguel come to his aid. Despite being outnumbered, they utilize the "wheel technique" to soundly defeat their opponents (Miguel knows it because Daniel, at Sam's request, agreed to give Miguel a private one-on-one lesson with him and Sam in the LaRussos' home dojo). Proud of his students, Daniel resolves to continue training Demetri at a slower pace, and also convinces Miguel to consider joining Miyagi-Do, saying that Miguel could use some new fighting moves for when he defends his title at the next All-Valley Tournament. Sam and Miguel have an intimate moment afterwards (either a passionate makeout session, or they make love in Sam's bedroom).
Hawk is infuriated by Moon breaking up with him AND the fact that Miguel is consorting with the enemy by aiding Sam (in fact, he's noticed Miguel growing distant from him and the rest of Cobra Kai ever since the tournament, having spent more time with Sam than with his friends from the dojo). So when Kreese notices Hawk blowing off steam, he encourages him to continue the fight. That night, Hawk and his Cobra Kai followers trash the Miyagi-Do dojo and steal Mr. Miyagi's Medal of Honor.
Enraged, Daniel confronts Johnny in front of the students at the Cobra Kai dojo. Although Johnny honestly denies any knowledge of the incident, the two nearly come to blows until Miguel steps in and forces them to stand down, getting Daniel to remember his promise not to alienate Miguel from him. While Daniel predictably fails to get any restitution out of Johnny, he nonetheless succeeds in convincing a number of Cobra Kai students to walk out and join Miyagi-Do instead...including Miguel. There's a small smirk on Kreese's face as Miguel leaves, since Miguel's no longer around to oppose him, and he hopes the friction between Robby and Miguel will get Robby to leave Miyagi-Do and come over to Cobra Kai.
Episode 6:
So for the next two episodes, Miguel is now at Miyagi-Do. Although Robby does not trust Miguel (thanks to Kreese using Tory to indirectly manipulate him), Daniel reveals that he himself used to be Cobra Kai before seeing the error of his ways, and tells the class that it doesn't matter who they were before — as of now, they are all Miyagi-Do. They work together to raise a heavy stone slab that Hawk's gang knocked over.
At the Cobra Kai dojo, Johnny punishes the students with strenuous exercises, seeking to root out who was responsible for trashing the Miyagi-Do dojo while also trying to reach out to Miguel, trying to get him to come back (with no success). He then receives a call which brings him to the hospital to visit his old friend Tommy, who is suffering from a terminal illness. Along with Bobby and Jimmy, the former Cobras resolve to treat Tommy to one last day of fun. His departure allows Kreese to corrupt the other Cobra Kais, moreso than in canon where Miguel was around to raise objections. The OG Cobra Kais, besides taking issue with Johnny for letting Kreese back in the picture, don't exactly help Johnny when they suggest that maybe it's for the best that Miguel is on the side of the LaRussos for now, as they've come to develop a lot of respect for Daniel and Mr. Miyagi since the tournament in 1984.
Episode 7:
I'd divide up the training sessions of Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do to happen on separate days. Miguel participates with Sam in the meat locker training scene, taking Robby's place in the canon scene, while pairing Robby up with Demetri or Chris. Meanwhile, Hawk acts as Tory's partner in Coyote Creek instead of Miguel.
Meanwhile, Miguel suspects that Hawk was behind the trashing of Miyagi-Do and it was as payback for the mall fight. Finding out somehow that Cobra Kai are training the following day at Coyote Creek (because someone, maybe Stingray, was foolish enough to post it on social media), he decides to bring Sam and some of the other Miyagi-Dos to ambush the Cobra Kais. Miguel does the ambush on and beatdown of Hawk and takes back the medal of honor, while Sam attacks Tory and gives her a beating, even though Tory wasn't a participant in the vandalism of Miyagi-Do. Daniel's not happy with Sam or Miguel, but Sam counters that they have to show they won't stand for being picked on.
When Tory tells Robby about what happened, Robby is understandably torn on his loyalties. On the one hand, he's got to be loyal to Miyagi-Do, but Tory is his girlfriend, and his resentments towards Miguel begin to resurface. Tory is furious, recalls the same thing Kreese said to get Hawk to trash Miyagi-Do in the first place, and swears revenge on Sam. And for that matter, the Cobra Kais also want revenge on Miyagi-Do.
Episode 8:
Johnny gets Miguel to come back to Cobra Kai, now that Kreese has been expelled and isn't around to teach them in his old ways. Daniel is sad to see Miguel go, but tells Miguel that he's always welcome at their place for private sessions with Daniel and Sam. While Hawk is glad to see Miguel back, Miguel keeps him at arm's length in light of the vandalism and what happened at the mall, and Tory puts on a poker face to hide her hatred of him (which is another reason why she's targeting Sam: to hurt him by proxy).
80's night at the roller rink in canon is the first time Sam and Tory have crossed paths since episode 4.
In canon it goes like this: Tory invites Miguel to the roller rink, and Tory trips Sam for talking to Miguel, getting Sam and Robby ejected from the rink.
In the alternate timeline, it goes like this: Tory invites Robby to the roller rink, and she kisses Robby in front of Sam, something Sam doesn't react well to because she sees Tory as dragging Robby down and potentially undoing the hard work Robby has put into turning his life around ever since he entered the LaRussos' lives. Miguel tries to smooth things over with Tory for Coyote Creek, with little success because he doesn't realize just how deep Tory's hatred for him and Sam is. He starts to realize this when Tory trips Sam moments later, leading Sam to retaliate with a leg sweep, and Miguel also retaliates by getting in Tory's face. As a result, both Sam and Miguel are kicked out of the rink.
Episode 9:
Moon's party goes down a bit differently when it comes to Sam, Miguel, Robby, and Tory's actions.
In the show, while Miguel is by the pool kissing Sam, Robby's inside getting food for a very drunk Sam. However, he gets distracted as the summer-long tension between Hawk and Demetri escalates, and he has to step in and defend Demetri.
Here, due to circumstances, the roles are reversed and Miguel is the one inside defending Demetri from Hawk, while it's Robby who's outside by the pool with Sam, just making sure she's all right (after all, he's the son of two alcoholics). There's no drunk kiss, and instead, Robby and Sam are being friendly, talking, and Sam is raising her concerns about Tory being a bad influence on him. They're seen by Tory, and like when Miguel approached Sam at the roller rink in the actual timeline (or in canon when Miguel saw Sam being friendly with Robby at the LaRussos'), she misinterprets the whole thing in a way that fuels her hatred for Sam that has been festering ever since Sam beat her up at Coyote Creek.
When the police break up the party, Robby hastily decides to take Sam back to Johnny's apartment like in the show. Tory happens to see him getting Sam into his car, and decides that Robby isn't entirely over his feelings for Sam. Giving her another excuse for the school brawl.
Miguel isn't anywhere near them, so he reaches out to Johnny. Johnny calls back when he gets to his apartment and finds Robby and Sam there, or Miguel finds them together there. In either case, there's a short fight between Robby and Miguel (due to Miguel, who has been fully aware this whole time that Robby had a crush on Sam, fearing Robby was taking advantage of her) that Johnny quickly breaks up, with Johnny placating Miguel enough to get him to back down. Miguel takes a few deep breaths, focuses, goes over to his apartment to get his mother, and she quickly whips up a hangover cure for Sam. Carmen also sees fit to call Sam's parents to let them know that she's all right, and they can come pick her up in the morning.
Episode 10:
The Sunday morning after Moon's party, Daniel comes by to pick Sam up. Meanwhile, Robby begins to reconcile with his father. He is thankful for Johnny's help, and when Daniel shows up to take Sam home, Robby is willing to accept the blame to prevent further tension between the two men.
When Daniel arrives, there is no "rematch" between him and Johnny, and nothing of him disowning Robby (it's actually a bit redundant seeing as Robby's going to provide Daniel with a reason to hate him later). Johnny just hands Sam over to Daniel, Daniel takes her home. He's not happy that she seemingly turned to Johnny instead of him in her hour of need, but accepts that that's an issue for another day.
Over that Sunday, Robby and Johnny reconcile at Johnny's apartment, while Miguel goes over to the LaRussos' house and talks things over with Daniel, Amanda and Sam. He apologizes for not being more attentive to Sam, as he was busy trying to defend Demetri.
That Monday, Johnny takes Robby to school. Even as Johnny's attempts to be fatherly to him on his first day of school are awkward, Robby appreciates that he is trying, and encourages his father to make peace with Daniel, believing that the two of them could learn some things from each other.
Shortly into the morning announcements, Tory assaults the teacher and seizes control of the intercom to announce an ass-beating of Sam. Like in the show, the two girls circle each other in the hallway, with Robby and Miguel frantically racing to reach them. Miguel gets there first and manages to briefly separate them, only for Robby to arrive and — believing that Miguel is attacking Tory — start his own fight with him. With Miguel also giving his all, still pissed at Robby for (seemingly) trying to take advantage of Sam.
The brawl thus plays out the same. And the outcome of the Sam vs. Tory and Miguel vs. Robby fights are the same. In the girls' fight, Tory shifts her spiked bracelet to her knuckles, slashing Sam's arm before threatening to slice her face with it. Sam regains the upper hand and knocks her down a staircase. Meanwhile, Miguel pins Robby to the floor, but, remembering what Johnny said about the difference between having no mercy and no honor, shows mercy and apologizes. However, Robby’s anger at Miguel over having everything Robby doesn't have--the tournament trophy, the romance with Sam, Johnny's preferential treatment, Daniel's approval-- boils over and he seizes the opening to attack Miguel, inadvertently kicking him over the stairway balcony and paralyzing him.
In the aftermath, Daniel is furious that both his daughter and her boyfriend, who he's come to like ever since the tournament, are both in the hospital with injuries. He also blames Tory for corrupting Robby once he learns from Sam that Robby had been dating Tory.
Season 3:
Season 3 has some differences in the details, but otherwise stays mostly the same.
-----
At the end of the day, the rivalries amongst Sam, Miguel, Robby and Tory are made a bit stronger by cutting out the love triangles. With Sam vs. Tory, that rivalry is balanced out a bit by having Sam be a contributor to the increasing tensions between them, not just Tory doing everything. While Robby vs. Miguel is a bit stronger rivalry due to the fact that Robby has to interact with Miguel a lot more, all while having to bottle up his resentments of Miguel so he doesn't lose the LaRussos' hospitality.

Can someone explain me what was the situation with jian yi family , brother qiu and he cheng I already forgot all the story and I’m so lost T_T
first, I’d like to apologize for how late I am in answering this.. I know this ask has been sitting in my inbox since the last 19 days update but I wanted to be able to answer as thoroughly as I possibly could, plus I had to find the time. also, you forgot all of the storyline regarding jian yi’s family situation? *chokes*~ I mean I’ll take that as an exaggeration but my heart couldn’t live with it if you were serious, it would just keep me awake at night lol. okay, I’m going to try and answer this as shortly as I possibly can although I feel like this answer will still end up being quite a long one since, as I said earlier, I’m going to try to be as thorough as possible. (>﹏
I will provide a shortened version in bullet points at the bottom if that is preferable so you can just skip ahead if you want.
when jian yi was just a baby, he was abandoned by his father which is shown in chapter 105. in the panels, shown in chapter 105, there are a few ways in which old xian employs elements of a somber mood and a sense of dark tension in the scene of jian yi’s father leaving him and his mother; the lack of a background, black speech bubbles that are vacant, the almost hyper focused imagery on the blood that covers jian yi’s father, ms. jian being shown tightly clutching a baby jian yi while visibly upset/crying — it gives an empty, dark, strained atmosphere while juxtaposed with a somber, almost loving mood from mr. jian’s last moments with his son and wife as mr. jian is actually shown to be tender with them - he clasps ms. jian’s face, gives her a kiss, and gently strokes his son’s head lovingly. the sense of dark tension seems to help assist readers in inferring that jian yi’s mother and father were possibly arguing before he left, most likely arguing about him leaving, and that he left in the middle of something dangerous happening in their lives given him being covered in blood; while the somber, semi-loving mood hints at the notion that it’s possible he didn’t really want to leave them and it was a tough decision for him to make. **also, this is one of two times old xian actually reveals some parts of what jian yi’s father looks like: tall, lean, medium grey/ash blonde hair, with a little bit of a stubble on his chin. the second time we see him is in chapter 136, where jian yi has a dream of his father pushing him and causing him to fall off this sort of hill/cliff, which may suggest that jian yi feels a bit of fear towards his father.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as jian yi grew older, his mother wasn’t around very often; jian yi never got to see her involved in his life very much so he was constantly being taken care of by a nanny. from chapter 193, it appears one of the reasons she wasn’t around very often was because of work (her occupation is unknown). as a result of neither his parents really being in his life, jian yi begins to feel very lonely, unloved, and gains abandonment issues. (panels below from chapters 97, 193)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and the feeling of being lonely, unloved, and having issues with abandonment is something he still feels and deals with currently even as he is older (below are panels from chapter 192 & 235 for example, although there are countless other times it is shown throughout the story).
Tumblr media
now we enter the middle school days: chapter 167 is where we first see he cheng and qiu’s character, along with several other underlings, try and kidnap jian yi. they’ve come to take jian yi without discussing any reasons why and without giving any prior warning to ms. jian nor asking for her permission; they simply follow the order they’ve received from their boss to take him. it is clear he cheng is speaking to his boss as he is displayed speaking in a respectful, formal tone with common phrases one would say to their leader in an organized gang such as “we’ve already found him” and “understood”. it is then revealed in chapter 168 that their boss is jian yi’s father when he cheng hands ms. jian the phone and the phone’s caller i.d. says “mr. jian” (so yes jian yi’s father is the one who ordered them to take jian yi, again the reasoning still being unclear at this point in the storyline - it will become more clear later). jian yi’s mother is shown angry, yet composed and fearless in front of massive men clearly from an organized gang — this could be because she immediately knew that it was mr. jian’s people / was able to differentiate that they are not from a different mafia group, having had some experience in seeing some of mr. jian’s mafia lifestyle firsthand while they were together before he left; whereas a natural reaction from a normal person, ‘normal’ as in someone unaware of who this gang was or who has not been submersed in that particular lifestyle, would be to react more shocked, hysterical, and scared of who these people might be. she is very curt and direct with them, immediately ordering he cheng to hand over the phone and he cheng listens to her without resistance.
from the conversation jian yi’s mother has on the phone with mr. jian, it is implied that jian yi’s mother and father have a estranged and complicated relationship. it is shown in chapter 168, that they are in disagreement with each other when it concerns jian yi from the time he cheng and qiu tried to take jian yi the first time. ms. jian tells mr. jian on the phone to order his underlings to leave, and she also reminds him of a conversation they once had in the past saying “I hope you still remember the promise you once made. no matter the reason, you will not..” but then it gets cut off. however, it seems to be implied that jian yi’s father had made some sort of promise in the past to leave jian yi alone when it comes to his mafia business; so while jian yi’s mother seems to want jian yi to stay as far away as possible from anything to do with the mafia, jian yi’s father has a specific reason (unknown at this point) he is involving him with it — essentially breaking that promise.

after the conversation jian yi’s father and mother have on the phone, things between them seemed to be put to cease fire and the underlings let jian yi go and leave. however, only a few days later jian yi is taken for the first time (for real this time) by an older unnamed man in chapter 192. while held hostage, jian yi speculates reasons as to why this man captured him and keeps him as a prisoner; however, when jian yi brings up the topic of money, the older man quickly shuts that possibility down saying he wasn’t doing it for money, which only just terrifies jian yi into thinking he is after something worse. while jian yi thinks of other possible intentions this man may have for kidnapping him, he comes to the conclusion that one of the reasons could possibly be because the man wants to threaten his mother (and although this is not the reason as he cheng later says “his only motive is to meet sir [jian yi’s father]” in chapter 195). this scene is important in that it shows how jian yi feels towards his mother: that no matter how often jian yi feels lonely and abandoned by her, it hasn’t caused him to hate her full-heartedly or anything like that — in fact the phrase, “I can’t let him succeed”, that crosses jian yi’s mind when he thinks of the older man threatening or harming his mother shows he still loves her and cares for her well being greatly.
there is also another scene which feels important to mention because it reveals a bit more about ms. jian yi’s character and that is a scene in chapter 193: jian yi’s mother thinks back to the time she took jian yi to kindergarten and he asked her to stay but she told him she couldn’t (these panels can be seen near the top of the post where I mention how she is not around often) — when she remembers this, she actually begins crying, which old xian shows to demonstrate her love for jian yi and her feelings of regret for not being there for jian yi enough throughout his life. after this, she gains a look of determination on her face and meets up with he cheng and the rest of mr. jian’s underlings; when she sees them she immediately expresses her upset by the situation and remarks that she doesn’t really give a shit what they do in their line of business as long as it leaves jian yi out of it. she also mentions “I’ve been running for so many years, but I still can’t escapes from events like this” which I feel is pretty direct and doesn’t need much explaining but just in case – she has clearly been involved in dangerous events surrounding the mafia before (most likely when she and mr. jian were together) and tries to avoid that type of conflict as much as possible ever since jian yi came into their life. he cheng lets her know that in response to jian yi’s kidnapping, his father immediately sent out people to go save his son and ‘already reminded’ them to make sure jian yi comes back unharmed.
Tumblr media
as said earlier, jian yi’s father sends his underlings to save jian yi, and qiu is the main one who goes out to do the rescue. jian yi manages to find a hole to escape from, qiu finds him and tries to help him leave while they are being shot at. the lack of care the older man gives as he erratically and desperately shoots at them to prevent them from getting away shows this man has no qualms regarding jian yi’s life ~he doesn’t care if he is harmed or killed by any of the bullets being shot off. jian yi and qiu manage to get away and while qiu hands off a weak, faint jian yi to another guard, he orders him to take jian yi to “safety”. jian yi is finally safe and he is reunited with his mother (he was gone for two days), she takes him home and leaves that afternoon “out of town”.
Tumblr media
after jian yi’s mother leaves town, she doesn’t come back for quite a number of days which jian yi begins to complain about in chapter 235. within this same chapter is where we first learn qiu’s name when he goes to deliver a bag of lots, like a ridiculously large sum, of money to jian yi. when jian yi calls him ‘big guy’, he becomes annoyed and tells him to call him ‘brother qiu’; do not to be confused with the word ‘brother’ — qiu and jian yi are not related/family, but in chinese culture, referring to someone older as “brother” gives a sense of respect to your elders. qiu tells jian yi his mother won’t be back soon, and answers a short but quick series of rapid fire questions from jian yi without really expanding or giving much explanation to them; he is not his mother’s boyfriend, nor is his boss pursuing his mother, and the money is for him to do as he pleases since his mother will be away for a while — basically its money to take care of himself.
after this chapter, old xian begins hinting some more about qiu (he cheng and the rest of mr. jian’s underlings) being jian yi’s bodyguard as the next day qiu is seen waiting out front of where jian yi lives as if to keep watch over him and make sure he is safe; he also mentions to he cheng that he hates ‘this assignment’ (being that of watching over jian yi) because he finds himself doing other favors for jian yi besides protecting him, such as taking jian yi to school when he is late as it makes him feel like a ‘maid’, which bothers him especially when his only responsibilities are to watch over him, make sure he is safe, and protect him when it is needed. however, he cheng reminds qiu to simply deal with it as ‘the situation has become tense”, the situation likely being one where someone is out looking for jian yi to harm or kill him which is essentially confirmed when qiu reacts quickly by shielding jian yi when he thinks someone is trying to shoot jian yi in his house, says its no longer safe there, and says in chapter 279 that he — as well as the other underlings — are getting paid to protect jian yi because someone is out to hurt him.
this leads us back to the current chapter, where it has been clear for a while now that someone (unknown to us for now ~it could be the older man from before, could not be etc.) found out that jian yi is mr. jian’s son and now they want to harm jian yi. it is slightly suggestive that it could be to get to (or maybe ‘at’, as in revenge) his father but nothing has been confirmed yet. because of the rising danger surrounding jian yi, he will now be temporarily staying somewhere else that is considered safer for him in the meantime, and his mother will be meeting him there soon. she most likely knows more about what is going on and it is likely the reason for why she was away from home without any contact for so long as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
eventually, (keep in mind this will happen later on in the story, it hasn’t happened yet and won’t for some time as jian yi is still in middle school) jian yi will disappear on the 2nd day of high school and he will be gone for about 3 years and come back when zhan zheng xi is a freshman in college.
so to shorten it up:
mr. jian is the boss of a mafia group
mr. jian and ms. jian were in disagreements with what to do with jian yi regarding his life/childhood. they’re estranged.
neither jian yi’s father or mother participated much in jian yi’s life. because of this jian yi seems to feel detached (and maybe a little bit of fear based on his dream) from his father who completely abandoned him, and has complicated feelings towards his mother because although she didn’t fully abandon him like his father and he loves and cares for her greatly, he is still frustrated by her lack of presence in his life often and how lonely it has made him.
there is someone, unknown, who is after jian yi and they want to harm and possibly kill him. mr. jian has sent underlings to protect him and they have taken him somewhere else to live (temporarily).
he cheng and qiu’s connection to jian yi’s family is in no way a personal one but a business one in that they are currently underlings who work for mr. jian’s (jian yi’s father) mafia group and have been ordered to protect jian yi.
I probably could’ve just shortened it to only those bullet points but I felt in order for you to get the overall idea and understanding of what was happening with his family’s situation and how he cheng and brother qiu are connected to it, I had to expand on who, why, what, etc… I also included stuff like how they feel towards each other as a family ~like how jian yi feels towards his parents / what they feel (or may feel in his father’s case) towards jian yi because I feel like that’s also part of knowing his family’s situation (not just the kidnapping or protecting stuff). hopefully this was a pretty decent refresher. I am sorry if there are any typos.

The Opposite of Slavery
"Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave" is one of the best autobiographies ever written. In that book Douglass doesn't have a list of the things that support slavery, but there are some things that definitely stick out as important. What if you just did the opposite? What if instead of doing the things that were important to keep slaves in slavery, you went the other direction?
Tumblr media
To a large extent, that is what Douglass did. He freed himself by doing the opposite of what a slave was supposed to do. (A number of other people were instrumental as well, of course. And Douglass himself acknowledges that Providence played a large part.)
An important note before we dive into what led to his freedom. He didn't go from being a slave to owning slaves. He might have been able to, he was a very resourceful man. And, others did it. There were black slave owners, traders, and breeders. It's an odd piece of history that's largely ignored because people don't know what to do with it. There were even rich black slave owners that donated money to support the Confederacy during the American Civil War. William Ellison is the most famous example.
But enough of how history is significantly different and much more complex than most people think it is. My point is that the opposite of being a slave is not being a slaveholder. The opposite of being a slave is being free. The opposite of slavery is freedom.
Here are eight of the most important things that I noticed while reading Frederick Douglass's book. I'll include some pertinent quotes as well. (He changed his name a couple of times throughout his life, but I'm going to use Frederick Douglass the whole time in this article.)
One
The slaves didn't have birthdays. The birthdays weren't recorded, and the slave owners didn't want the slaves to know their birthdays. It seems kind of odd to me. It seems unimportant. But I've been rethinking that, because if slaveholders considered it important, then it probably is.
I think it might be something like this. To have a birthday is to confirm that you are an individual. To have a birthday is to confirm that you had a unique beginning. Beginnings have special power. The greatest political philosopher of the 20th century focused on this idea. Hannah Arendt called it natality.
I've largely ignored my birthday. I haven't considered it significant. But, I think that was wrong. I think it's more important than most people realize.
"By far the larger part of the slaves know as little of their ages as horses know of theirs, and it is the wish of most masters within my knowledge to keep their slaves thus ignorant."
Two
Mothers were separated from their children. Families were separated from each other in general. The bonds of the family are too strong. When people bond together they become strong. They won't allow a loved one to just freely be beaten on and abused by someone. They will do something. But, if you don't have strong bonds, then why should you step in and get punished too? Family groups are the foundation of human society, and if you can destroy the family unit, then the society falls apart too.
"My mother and I were separated when I was but an infant - before I knew her as my mother. It is a common custom, in the part of Maryland from which I ran away, to part children from their mothers at a very early age."
Three
Douglass was sent from the plantation to serve part of the owner's family living in town when he was fairly young. The wife hadn't grown up owning slaves and taught Douglass the sounds of the letters. (Yes, phonics works.) She was then informed by her husband that it was illegal to teach slaves to read. But, that start was just what Douglass needed. He would trade bread to poor white boys in the streets to help him with reading. Later, he would challenge them to spelling contests.
This is an important point to emphasize. It was illegal to teach slaves to read. It's hard to keep educated people down. And I'm not talking about school, I'm talking about real education, about learning and knowing and thinking. It's much easier to keep illiterate people down. So much so that it was a law to keep the slaves illiterate.
Douglass had a gifted intellect and picked up reading fairly quickly. By quickly I mean he worked on it for years. Luckily, when he was about 12 he came across a book titled "The Columbian Orator". This book was focused on teaching public speaking by drawing from the greatest speeches in history. It included speeches against slavery from ancient Greece. It had a huge impact on his life and he became one of the most famous public speakers in the world.
Also, writing is what allowed Douglass to later write fake papers so he could escape to the North.
"Just at this point of my progress, Mr. Auld found out what was going on, and at once forbade Mrs. Auld to instruct me further, telling her, among other things, that it was unlawful, as well as unsafe, to teach a slave to read. To use his own words further, he said, "If you give a nigger an inch, he will take an ell. A nigger should know nothing but to obey his master - to do as he is told to do. Learning would spoil the best nigger in the world. Now," said he, "if you teach that nigger (speaking of myself) how to read, there would be no keeping him. It would forever unfit him to be a slave. He would at once become unmanageable, and of no value to his master. As to himself, it could do him no good, but a great deal of harm. It would make him discontented and unhappy.""
Four
Douglass talks about how slaves walked around with their shoulders slouched down in a servile position. He really noticed that when he went to work in town and the same woman that taught him the alphabet reacted oddly to him being hunched down. So, he stood up straight. Slaves are expected to cower.
"The crouching servility, usually so acceptable a quality in a slave, did not answer when manifested toward her."
Five
Slaves weren't allowed to talk back to their masters or the overseers, at all. If you talked back to them you would be beaten. This inability to speak is huge. That's why freedom of speech is the first amendment in the American Bill of Rights. Because, if you can't speak, then you don't have freedom.
"To all these complaints, no matter how unjust, the slave must answer never a word."
"There must be no answering back to him; no explanation was allowed a slave, showing himself to have been wrongfully accused."
"To be accused was to be convicted, and to be convicted was to be punished; the one always following the other with immutable certainty. To escape punishment was to escape accusation; and few slaves had the fortune to do either, under the overseership of Mr. Gore."
Six
Slaves weren't allowed to fight back, obviously. Douglass includes a couple of stories that illustrate the significance of this perfectly. He talks about a slave that was going to get whipped, but to avoid it he ran into the middle of a river and stood there. The slave overseer told him to come out. He wouldn't, so the overseer shot the slave in the head where he was standing. These were the stakes.
At one point Frederick Douglass decided that he would never take another whipping without putting up a fight. This should have gotten him killed. And he knew that. But he decided to fight anyway. The next time Douglass was going to get whipped he got into a fistfight with the overseer in the barn. They fought one-on-one for two hours. Apparently Douglass was a pretty good fighter, because he didn't get whipped. And, for some reason, they didn't kill him either. Douglass got into a number of other fights throughout his life, but he fought every time and was never whipped again.
Slaves don't fight back, free people do. That's why the right to have weapons is the second amendment in the American Bill of Rights. If you don't have the means to fight back, then you have no choice but to do what you're told, like a slave.
This touches on the origins of slavery as well. The foundation of slavery is war. Slaves are the war captives. I'll go into that more in another article.
"Mr. Covey seemed now to think he had me, and could do what he pleased; but at this moment - from whence came the spirit I don't know - I resolved to fight; and, suiting my action to the resolution, I seized Covey hard by the throat; and as I did so, I rose."
"He asked me if I meant to persist in my resistance. I told him I did, come what might; that he had used me like a brute for six months, and that I was determined to be used so no longer."
"This battle with Mr. Covey was the turning-point in my career as a slave. It rekindled the few expiring embers of freedom, and revived within me a sense of my own manhood. It recalled the departed self-confidence, and inspired me again with a determination to be free. The gratification afforded by the triumph was a full compensation for whatever else might follow, even death itself. He only can understand the deep satisfaction which I experienced, who has himself repelled by force the bloody arm of slavery. I felt as I never felt before. It was a glorious resurrection, from the tomb of slavery, to the heaven of freedom. My long-crushed spirit rose, cowardice departed, bold defiance took its place; and I now resolved that, however long I might remain a slave in form, the day had passed forever when I could be a slave in fact. I did not hesitate to let it be known of me, that the white man who expected to succeed in whipping, must also succeed in killing me.
From this time I was never again what might be called fairly whipped, though I remained a slave four years afterwards. I had several fights, but was never whipped."
Seven
Slaves were not allowed to keep what they earned. They were just given enough to stay alive and continue to work, no matter how much they produced. Douglass broke through this chain as well while he was slowly working his way out of slavery. He was able to develop a skill. His master had him apprenticed as a ship caulker. After Douglass knew what he was doing he convinced his owner that he could manage himself and would pay the owner a set number. It was common to rent out slaves, and Douglass essentially rented himself. Plus, it was less of a hassle for the owner. This way, if Douglass could earn more than that he would be making money. Which he did. Free people are able to keep what they earn.
"I was now getting, as I have said, one dollar and fifty cents per day. I contracted for it; I earned it; it was paid to me; it was rightfully my own; yet, upon each returning Saturday night, I was compelled to deliver every cent of that money to Master Hugh. And why? Not because he earned it, - not because he had any hand in earning it, - not because I owed it to him, - nor because he possessed the slightest shadow of a right to it; but solely because he had the power to compel me to give it up. The right of the grim-visaged pirate upon the high seas is exactly the same."
Eight
Slaves aren't able to decide what they will do. They are told what they will do. They have no choice. As Douglass started to manage himself, with the deal he had made with his owner, he was able to take back some control. He was able to do what he wanted when he wanted, for the most part, as long as he made his payment.
"He too, at first, seemed disposed to refuse; but, after some reflection, he granted me the privilege, and proposed the following terms: I was to be allowed my time, make all contracts with those for whom I worked, and find my own employment; and, in return for this liberty, I was to pay him three dollars at the end of each week; find myself in calking tools, and in board and clothing."
Summing Up
These are just a few of the lessons that I've been able to glean from Frederick Douglass. Let's summarize these eight points.
Slaves:
don't have birthdays,
are separated from their families,
can't read and write,
slouch their shoulders,
can't openly speak,
can't fight,
can't keep what they earn,
and can't decide what they will do.
If we take the opposite of these I think we end up with a pretty good description of what a free person is. Maybe even a good definition of what freedom is, and what is needed to protect freedom.
Free people:
have individual birthdays,
have a family bond,
read and write,
stand up straight,
are free to speak,
fight back against abuse,
keep what they earn,
and decide what they will do.
There are a ton of other great insights in Douglass's autobiography ranging from the corruption of holidays, to the corruption of religion, to the corruption of political parties. I highly recommend reading it.
Slavery destroys the humanity in people, both slave and slaveholder alike. It's important to know what slavery is so that we can move in the opposite direction. It's important to know the value of freedom, how to attain it, and how to protect it. And if you want freedom, then be the opposite of a slave.

For the prompt meme: #1 with SonAmy, please? And could I please have it in the cyborg Sonic AU I explained to you in message? Thank you
Tumblr media
(This is her picture)
Sounds like fun! :D
Prompt:
Putting up a face for everyone, Sonic would continue his normal routine with a thumbs up and smile, even if that thumbs up was now a metallic one.
He still had control over his mind and… most of his body.
Amy had swung her hammer out to knock him away from the majority of the blast, to which, he was extremely grateful for.
But… he never told the gang this… sometimes his arms and legs would do their own thing, and it frightened him quite a bit that it took almost all his mental capacity to take control over them again.
The gang was of course worried about him, but he wouldn’t break composure… not even for a second.
Eggman was even at wits end about him not retaliating. Once beaten, Sonic carried on as if it was nothing, but made sure to threaten Eggman to de-robotize him soon.
Problem was, Eggman wasn’t expecting the beam to go so well, and he forgot about a reverse… He said if he actually hit him, he wouldn’t need one right?
Sonic countered with Metal Sonic’s rebellion. He still hadn’t been heard from sense.
Eggman frowned and realized he was right, and promised to get to work on that.
Sadly… much to Sonic’s supsicion, Eggman was waiting out his days, hoping the robotic link between his limps would cancel out his mind, but Sonic’s will was too unbreakable, even if he did lose control of them at little times, with a twiddle of metallic fingers or something, he just shook it off and was able to keep it together… but he did sweat quite a bit when it happened, cause it took a few jostles sometimes to really get the sensation of control back.
Right now, Sonic stared at his hand, feeling the electricity more than the actual feeling of a hand, and shook it a few times.
Things rattled, and he worried his last adventure with it might have loosened a bolt or two. So he may need to see Tails…
The very thought of having Tails open the literal ‘hatch’ of his arm and start pulling and tugging on wires sent a queasy feeling through Sonic’s stomach.
After all…
They weren’t sure whether the wires pumped oil… or blood.
He shook his head, no time to think about that right now.
He adjusted his hand and arm, trying to feel something again.
Then it happened.
His hand tensed up, and he had no control over it.
“Shoot!” he started to fiddle with it again, and strain his mind.
It started reaching and groping in the air, as Sonic tried to hold it back. “Erk..!” he gritted his teeth.
Then.. the worst thing…
“Sonic?”
Sonic shot a head back, “Amy?” The hand lunged forward, causing him to fall flat on his chin, making him angry. “Not… now!” he kicked his feet out, still having full control over them as the rebellious fingers spiked the ground, and started crawling away.
“W-woah!” Sonic was slowly but surely being dragged forward on the ground!
“Sonic..?”
Amy’s voice grew closer.
He looked worried, sweat trinkling down his face as he wasn’t able to focus enough to get rapid control over the hand.
He was too focused on Amy approaching…
He swiped the hand up with his other arm, and jumped up, putting the hand behind him in a death grip, and turning to where Amy was now coming out of the bush.
“Oh, hey.. Amy..” he struggled behind him to keep the arm undercontrol. At least the other three were fine…
“Sonic..? Are you okay? I’ve been looking everywhere for you!” Amy looked concerned, before going back to her happy-go-lucky ways and rushing to embrace him.
“No!” Sonic lifted a leg up.
She stopped, seeing he would have pushed her back.
She looked down at it, and then back up at him. “Sonic?”
“W-what?”An eyebrow twitched.
she took that as a bad sign.
He was simply straining against the arm wrestle happening behind him, but he could tell that didn’t come across to Amy.
‘I can’t let her worry, too.’ Sonic thought, and quickly lowered the leg.
“I’m fine, Amy. Really! You just started me there, that’s all…” He put on his best smile, but his ears slightly bent as he heard a click behind him.
“Huh?” He turned to look down over his shoulder, and saw the other hand had clicked a button to make one of his fingers fly off like a missile.
His eyes shook comically and he took off after it, not wanting Amy to see.
“Everything’s perfectly fine!” he charged and leaped for it, grabbing it and hooking it back on the bad hand. It, by the way, still struggled, before Amy rushed over to him on the ground.
“You’re clearly acting strange! What’s wrong with your arm?” She tried to peek over his body.
“Nothing! Nothing’s up! J-just… Stay back.” he moved his rebellous hand under his belly, before it started to spike and drill in a swirl, and he had to move away before it ripped through his torso.
“WOAH!” he leaned back, and Amy could now see as he flopped on his back and struggled to keep it upward, that he had no control over it.
“SONIC!” Amy summoned her hammer and knocked the arm away, as it fell to the ground and she held it firmly there with her hammer, even stepping on it for good measure. “Are you alright!?”
Sonic held a sigh in, before looking up at Amy.
She saw…
Amy held his stare, before the arm jostled and broke out of Amy’s power.
“Amy!” Sonic reached his good hand up and grabbed the hand, as it tried to reach for her.
“Sonic!” She kicked at it before Sonic was able to get up on his knees, then hop to his legs, letting it pull him after her before whirling his legs back at super sonic speeds.
The arm started to loose grip of the ground, and ended up letting go.
Once racing backwards, Sonic stopped and smashed his hand into a tree, letting it be stuck there.
“Phew.” he finally let that sigh out. “That was too close…”
She got up, worried. “Sonic… you don’t have complete control over yourself.. do you?”
He jolted, turning to her… before arching his brows and looking away, seeing she had learned the truth.
“..I just.. didn’t want anyone to worry.”
“…I can see that.” Amy smiled gently, before slowly walking towards him, eyeing the tree with the struggling arm.
“…At least you have control over most of it… unless.” she dipped her head down, almost relieved, before realizing the scary fact…
She turned back to look into his eyes, “It’s getting worse?” she looked serious.
He held her stare, but sweated, feeling more and more focus leave him and directing it all on Amy.
The hand wiggled, but was perfectly stuck in it’s wooden prison.
“Oh, Sonic… You know Eggman’s not working to help you!” Amy stated it clearly, but the whine in her voice showed how much she cared.
“We’ve gotta do something!”
“R-relax, Amy. I’ll just give him a good metal swing into his keister and-”
She rushed into him, hugging him tightly as he held his peace, looking left and right above her head.
“…Don’t lie to me again.. okay?”
He felt a sting in his eye.
“I know you want to be brave… I know you’re trying not to worry anyone… but it’s okay to be upset… It’s okay to react to this, Sonic. It’s hard. I know it’s hard. I don’t know what you’re going through, but your half robot… attacking robot…” she glanced at the tree, seeing the hand starting to make progress with getting out.
“…But you’re still Sonic. And that’s all that counts.”
“…Thanks to you.” Sonic finally spoke out.
Then.. Amy heard something soft and light, and looked up.
Sonic was tearing up, but refused to look down at her, just keeping his head forward and straight.
“Amy… if you hadn’t had thrown that hammer.. I… I’d…”
She gripped him closer. “Oh, Sonic! It’s okay to cry! It’s not weakness!”
That permission caused his trembling knees to collapse, he fell into her arms and began to cry by the side of the tree.
He was so silent in it, but his eyelids squinted so tightly, that they twitched, still having his other hand dug into the tree.
Amy gently rubbed his back quill, before looking up at the tree.
“…Sonic!” her eyes widened, “Look out!”
“Wha?”
As he turned around, the hand had sprung free in a shower of sharded wood chips, and immediately lunged forward and gripped Amy’s arm.
“AH!”
“WOAH!” Sonic grabbed the arm with his other hand, “Let her go!”
“Sonic..” Amy’s eyes trembled…
The fear in her eyes made him even more determined to succeed.
‘I have to protect her. I can’t let her be afraid of me!’
His will grew and so did his focus.
He closed his eyes, calming down as the arm struggled, before Sonic shot his eyes open.
“Release her.”
It froze.
“NOW!”
The arm shook with gears and cranks, but he slowly gained control over it again, and threw it back up to his chest, holding it still.
Amy fell back, and scooted away, before waiting to see if Sonic was truly alright.
He breathed heavily, it took a lot out of him, and exerted a good majority of his brain power from him.
“I…” his tears slowly rolled down his cheek, as he pulled the hand out and stared at it, his whole body shook at different times from the endeavor of taming itself again. “I’m so sorry.” he turned his face… and ran.
“Sonic!” Amy reached forward, thrusting herself out but it was too late.. too slow..
Sonic ran to Eggman’s lab and home base, his eyes drying sorely from the fresh tears.
He looked ticked.
‘No more mr. nice guy.’ Sonic ducked his head down, and moved like a streak of light as he propelled himself even faster.
“This ends tonight, Eggman!!!”

An Origin Story (AU) Fic Preview
An odd sensation jolted the Observer known to his peers as Goldblum awake, followed by a voice that he quickly recognized as his captor, Anil.
“Good morning, Sunshine. That’s it. That’s the cold stare I know and love. You dead fish. This is my friend,” the captor Anil gestured to his companion, a rather shabby looking native who looked… what was the word Goldblum was searching for? Irate? Yes, Irate. Though it was no different than how most natives looked at his kind.
The captor continued.  ”He’s meaner than I am. So I guess you know where that leave you…” He turned to his compatriot and asked him, “You good?” Goldblum deduced that Anil would leave his companion to try to glean information out of him, whatever that may be. He couldn’t do a read just yet as he was still groggy from the drugs that had been keeping him unconscious.
The Native accompanying Anil replied, “Good. Thank you,” before turning his attention to Goldblum. “You recognize this, right? You’re gonna help me put it together.”
Goldblum soon enough rose to a level of consciousness that allowed him to read the man before him. He learned that this Native’s name was Peter Bishop. Awfully arrogant, this Peter Bishop, he thought before replying - “You do not have a use for it.” After all, what would, no, what could a Native use their End Dock Stabilizer Unit? The level of physics and the unit’s operation would be beyond his level of comprehension.
“Oh, but I do have a use for it. I just need to know how it fits together, and I need to know what powers it, and I need to know how it works. To do that… I need to turn it on…” the cocky Native said, getting ever closer to the Observer’s proximity. Peter brought what appeared to be a camera device closer to Goldblum’s eye.
Goldblum focused on it for a moment and cocked his head before turning his attention to Peter. “You must understand, your compatriots have gleaned no information from me. You will not either,” He replied hollowly before pausing for a moment, picking up a subtlety in Peter’s thought patterns. A smug determination. Another head tilt. “You think you will succeed where others will not.” The Observer’s intonation changed slightly, almost imperceptibly, to one of amused curiosity.
“You read me. See if you can read my thoughts now. Anything?” Peter asked before quickly continuing, “It’s okay. I know you know. I can feel you banging around inside there. But it doesn’t matter what you find out. ‘Cause you and I both know… you’re never walking out of here. Whatever the closest thing it is to fear that you can feel, I know that you’re feeling it right now. You’re not the only one with a skill for reading people.”
Peter exuded arrogance, Goldblum thought. Peter believed himself to have an edge over him. He would find himself to be sorely mistaken. Stilling himself for a moment, Goldblum’s vision began to fade to blue as he looked into the future in regard to Peter’s thoughts and actions. Peter’s little scheme would ultimately fail, he surmised as he droned the words, “You don’t even know what you don’t know,” in response to Peter and tilted his head in the quirky manner of his kind.
Peter’s eyes narrowed, and he uttered, “We’ll see,” with that same cocky intonation as he powered up the camera. He intended to use an antiquated method of determining a person’s emotions using pupillometry. Goldblum wasn’t worried in the slightest. His kind didn’t have the emotions that would betray them, even on a subconscious level. It would be a very ineffective method. The Observer’s keen hearing picked up on a fly that zoomed about the room, and he decided to turn most of his attention to that. It was more interesting than what this Native was rambling on about.
“You and I both know the variation of a magnetic field produces an electric current if the pieces of the cube are assembled in the proper order. But what’s the proper order?” Peter asked Goldblum, as if he would respond, before correcting himself, “Oh, that’s right. You’re not going to tell me.”
“You are pleased with yourself,” the Observer stated, his eyes following the path of the fly. To Peter, it would only look as if he had a slight nystagmus.
Peter snorted and replied, “I’m feeling optimistic… if that’s what you mean.” He began assembling the Unit piece by piece, watching Goldblum’s pupils.
Goldblum glanced at Peter’s progress. “Your skill is impressive… But it is of no consequence,” he droned. To be truthful, Goldblum was surprised Peter had not blown them both to smithereens yet.
“You have no idea what we are capable of,” the other retorted in turn.
“I think of you as I would an ant colony as I pass by it. I don’t care about the workings of the colony, why one ant is mad at another or why one ant would kill another or not,” the Observer said, feeling the closest thing to peeved that one of them could feel and wanting to put this lowly Native in his place despite the circumstances. “To me, it is insignificant. And like an ant colony, you are oblivious to your limitations. You think the black over your heads is dark skies,” his jaw clenched a bit, and some semblance of pride creeped in to his voice, “When it is really our shoe.”
Peter rolled his eyes, unfazed by the bald man’s attempt to shake him. His unrelenting fury against Observers drove him onward to try and complete the cube. “You talk a good game, but the truth is… You’re worried.” Peter held up a component of the cube, so his captive could see it. “Now, this next piece… if I attach this incorrectly…”
“–We will be obliterated,” Goldblum finished Peter’s sentence calmly, returning to observing the fly.
“But how do I do it? Which is the right way? Four possibilities. Three of them are wrong. And I’m relying on you to tell me,” Peter said, more at him than to him.
A pitiful attempt at mind games at best… Goldblum thought before speaking in reply, “Then you are relying on a faulty premise. I do not fear death. Whatever choice you make, it makes no difference.”
“Consciously, yeah. That may be true. But your origins are human. No matter how advanced you’ve become, you will endeavor to stay alive at all costs,” the Native paused, attempting to let the statement sink in before explaining, “In extreme situations, your body will react on a subconscious, organic level. There are ‘tells’ that your mind can’t control.”
“For instance…good news…” Peter moved the piece into different positions, watching the Observer’s pupils closely on the computer screen. When he noticed Goldblum’s eyes dilate, he held the piece over the hole it would be inserted in. “And your pupils dilate. Bad news, and they contract. Not just a theory. In fact, I’m sure of it.”
“Are you?”
Peter let go of the piece and it was pulled into the machine via magnet. The cube didn’t blow up, and Peter’s face turned into one of smug satisfaction. All of a sudden, his cellphone rang, and Peter left the room, leaving Goldblum to contemplate flies and the future.
When Peter returned, his face was furious. He grabbed a sheet of hanging plastic and started towards Goldblum. Goldblum snapped to attention as he saw the sheet get wrapped around his head, suffocating him of precious air for a few moments before Peter gave him a reprieve from the choking. “Why didn’t it work?” Peter growled, barely containing his anger.
As if by some instinct, the Observer read Peter, seeing flashes of memories in which Peter was conversing with Anil about pursuing revenge. “You don’t even know what you don’t know,” he said flatly, though internally he was jolted, scared shitless as he could get. Being suffocated with a plastic sheet, and nearly dying of it would scare anyone, though this Observer would never admit to his fear. A primitive emotion. “Before going on a journey of revenge, dig two graves. Your friend was correct. Emotions get in the way of judgement.”
“Emotions did not get better of me. I read your tells to help me assemble the device,” Peter asserted, anger clearly showing, jaws clenched and eyes ablaze with fury.
“Your assertion regarding the involuntary response of the body to physical threat was interesting but highly antiquated. It does not apply to us.” The Observer took a breath, trying to readjust himself.

Well after editing out the Pees, farts and anals after being pranked by my domestic partner, here’s a preview of my fic so far. :)
This is an AU based on the Origin Story episode in Season Five, which is a “What if the fly-Observer didn’t die/pass out from his tech being removed” in part. Also said Observer’s name is Goldblum after Jeff Goldblum who played The Fly in the movie The Fly.
