Door Reviews: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (2001)

So! The Ace Attorney series. Iconic games, known by many. So many people have recommended this game series to me already. SO MANY PEOPLE. I got the first trilogy on the PC years ago, but it sat in my library unplayed for so long. And I have finally found the time to start it. And now, reader, I am so excited to tell you all about the first game!!! Let’s go!

What’s it about?

It’s about new lawyer, Phoenix Wright, and his foray into the world of Japanese courtrooms. We meet clients and assist them in getting a Not Guilty verdict. We see him learn the ropes, investigate crime scenes, endure his own trials, and persevere against all odds.

Disclaimer: In this review, I will mostly be talking about the first four cases. The fifth case will have its own section and its own rating at the end of this review.

STYLE (Gameplay, Graphics, Music)

Gameplay feels like a visual novel with investigative elements. You navigate areas, talk to people, and take note of evidence to present to people and at trials. The gameplay isn’t really anything to write home about, but the cases themselves are interesting to unravel.

To present evidence during, you have to select the right dialogue that the witness said, then present said evidence using the assigned hotkey (E for keyboard). It becomes a game of carefully reading what the witness said and cross-referencing it with the facts of the case, catching the lie using the evidence at your disposal.

It can get grating trying to find the exact dialogue to present evidence against. The cases can get roundabout at times, so you really have to make sure you understand what the witness said. I found that I have to double, even triple-check what the witness was saying, and check the whole transcript against my stack of evidence one by one.

Outside of the trials, it’s a visual novel-esque game where you go places and interact with items, making sure to talk to NPCs as well.

The gameplay itself is simple, but the game itself uses this simplicity to good effect in terms of storytelling, which I’ll discuss more on in the next section. All in all, I think the gameplay itself passes muster for me: good enough to play with, but not bad enough that I’d get too distracted by it.

The art looks sleek and expressive. The sprites look very anime. I like their exaggerated movements at times. Makes it feel like a wacky courtroom drama. The backgrounds are nice, too.

In terms of art, I think the best part are the character designs. The characters can be so zany and distinctive! And their animations reflect this, too.

The music, I think, stands out among all of these. They set the tone for various stages of the game, giving it whimsy, an air of caution, and an intensity too. I love the Turnabout music a lot! It is very iconic.

All in all, the style of this game is something I find charming. It’s simple, but because of that simplicity the game can use it to tell better stories.

SUBSTANCE (Story, Characters, Impact)

This game’s story is fun. It has a lot of wacky hijinks in it! Even the names of characters are so wacky: Lotta Hart. Sal Manella. April May. Redd White, CEO of Bluecorp. It’s such a silly game!

It has a lot of sassiness too. The banter between Phoenix Wright and a bunch of the other characters can be so funny. He can become the butt of the joke a lot but in the courtroom he WILL sass you to hell and back if he can press the advantage!

The dialogue of this game is soooooo silly. It feels like a Saturday morning cartoon in a way! It feels cheesy at times, yet I can’t help but crack a smile.

What I like most, though, is that this game’s story has a lot of heart (heh) and earnestness! It does character relationships so well, having a good balance between lightheartedness and seriousness. It presents character struggles seriously. And most of all, it emphasizes how difficult it is to be a defense attorney in one of the countries with the highest conviction rate.

We root for Phoenix Wright not just because he’s a silly defense attorney, you root for him because he tries despite insurmountable obstacles. He tries despite a legal system that can be cartoonish but is nonetheless still based on reality, where an accusation is practically a prison sentence. He tries because it’s the right thing to do.

That’s why I like this game’s story so much. At its heart, it’s a story about doing the right thing against all odds. It tells its story with such whimsy and silliness, yet is just so earnest when it comes to things that matter.

VERDICT

Ace Attorney is a gem of a game. I enjoyed playing it after work. It became something to look forward to after my day-to-day. I was rather bemused with the story, and slowly ended up loving it. I absolutely LOVE Edgeworth as a character and he is now one of my top 5 faves of all time (maybe even top 1…… he is my blorbo of the month). With such a strong first game, I am very much excited to play the rest of the trilogy. Play this game!!!

REVIEW: RISE FROM THE ASHES

SO! Rise from the Ashes is the 5th case in this game. This case here is an addition to the game after it got a Nintendo DS remaster. And it makes full use of the DS capabilities, with more expressive sprites, 3D evidence, and other gameplay quirks. Too bad we’re experiencing this on the PC!! Nonetheless, we push on with this review.

Case 5 is a fresh new case with a LOT of content. It’s like… maybe two, 2.5 cases in one? There are a lot of twists and turns to the story, and the devs introduced new gameplay, chief among which is the way you can now inspect each evidence you get. You go to the court record, press Enter, and you can look at it in 3D!!! You can get to inspect engravings, blood, and most importantly, you can now look at the back of receipts! Technology…

There are other new gameplay things they introduced, but they’re mostly just small things that try to tie you better into the game and also showcase the capabilities of the DS. Well, less that and more taking advantage of the new things the DS could do. With new technology means new ways you can make your game, and new ways to tell your story.

In my opinion though, these new things introduced in gameplay feel like they were thrown in for the sake of it, as if telling the player “oh, look at me! I can do this now!” Too experimental in a way… which makes sense, since this is in a way the first AA case on the DS. I haven’t played the other DS games, but I would hope that they found a way to integrate the capabilities of the DS better and in a way that makes sense for the story.

I found the story of case 5 to be amazing!! It had a bit of a slow start for me, but when it got going I was on the edge of my seat. It was thrilling, funny, and had heart, which is what I feel is classic Ace Attorney.

I liked it!! I would give this additional content a 4/5, if only because the new gameplay stuff hassled me a bit. They tried some new things, and some of them annoyed me, but I’m sure these new things would play out better in future installments. So far, I very much enjoy the series, and I’m excited to play more of its games!

Mitsuki: You just made things worse, lol

Tsumugi: Now that things are less tense, let's get right to the requests..!

Mitsuki: Huh? Are things really less tense now? lol

Nagi: It would appear Sogo has managed to relax :-)

Sogo: Laughing did make my fingers feel more light, somehow...

Yamato: Yep, he's definitely less tense in some ways (lol)

Tsumugi: That's great! Well then, let's start with our youngest, as usual. Tamaki-san, you'll be the first to step up to the plate!

Tamaki: Yup

Tamaki: Tell us the last thing you wanna do before Earth blows up

Riku: Ah! That's from the movie we watched the other day!

Tamaki: It was soooooo awesome!!! I cried a ton at the end

Nagi: Tamaki, you are already very into this!

Sogo: Before Earth blows up... Why is it blowing up?

Tamaki: I dunno? Does it matter?

Sogo: I'm curious, since it wouldn't just blow up for no reason.

Tamaki: Ugh. Whatever

Tamaki: Gas, I guess?

Sogo: I wonder what type of gas... I don't know much about astronomy, but I suppose I'd search for a way to stop the explosion.

Sogo: What kind of mechanism is the detonation tied to?

Tamaki: So-chan, you're so annoying! That's not what I meant

Tamaki: Forget the reason

Tamaki: Don't you have anything like, eating pudding or singing together?

Mitsuki: Sogo's such a serious guy!

Iori: I'm curious as well, so I can relate, Osaka-san.

Sogo: Right. I'm still wondering about the reason behind the explosion, but I'll think of something.

Tsumugi: That was a very grand and sci-fi request! Thank you, Tamaki-san.

Tsumugi: Iori-san, you're next!

Iori: Mine is to tell a secret he's never told anyone.

Iori: Osaka-san has a mysterious charm. I'm sure his fans must be eager to know his secrets.

Sogo: What level of secret are we talking about..?

Iori: Just anything that's suited for a radio broadcast is fine.

Sogo: Good.

Momo: Like that you watch cat videos when you're sad!

Ryunosuke: Or that you prefer chili oil to tabasco!

Rinto: Neither of those sound like secrets!

Gaku: There's no real revelation to them.

Sogo: It'll be a difficult balance to strike, but I'll think of a secret that's both interesting and appropriate for radio.

Tsumugi: Iori-san, thank you for an exciting request! Riku-san, you're next!

Riku: Okay! Mine is to tell us his first impressions of the other IDOLiSH7 members.

Nagi: That is a very interesting request!

Yamato: You mean from when we played basketball in the practice room? That really takes me back.

Sogo: It got so intense that it was hard to believe we'd just met.

Iori: Maybe that was due to the sport we were playing. Moving around improves your mood, and builds your communication skills.

Riku: I think I would've totally loved Sogo-san right away, even without basketball!

Iori: Isn't that your first impression of him, then..?

Sogo: Thank you, Riku-kun. I'm happy to hear that.

Mitsuki: I love you, too!

Nagi: I love you as well, Sogo.

Iori: Do the rest of us have to continue this..?

Yamato: Don't stop the flow, it makes this even more embarrassing (lol)

Iori: You may go ahead of me, Nikaido-san.

Yamato: Nope, it's more fun to hear this stuff from you youngings. Come on, Tama.

Tamaki: Don't dump this on me, Yama-san!

Mitsuki: Adults need to take the lead with this stuff, you geezer!

Nagi: The Japanese are very shy :-(

Momo: You guys are so cute!

Ryunosuke: Should we say "I love you" to each other, too?

Gaku: You mean we as in TRIGGER?

Tenn: Yes. Mine is for Sogo Osaka to show a wild side of himself.

Tenn: He's known as mild-mannered and gentle, right? I'm sure many of his fans want to see an unexpected side to him.

Tenn: His 12 SONGS GIFT solo was a cool rock song, too.

Sogo: I-I'm honored to hear that..!

Tenn: I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Tenn: You've never been one to make mistakes with your singing and dancing, probably thanks to lots of steady practice. With 12 SONGS GIFT, it felt like I'd gotten a taste of not only your sincerity, but your passion, too.

Yuki: "Maybe" gave me chills

Nagi: When he talks of things he likes, his eyes sparkle with joy. I want his fans to see him in such a state, as well!

Iori: They can't see him through the radio, but I'm sure they'll be able to tell that he's having fun.

Sogo: Thank you, Nagi-kun. I didn't know you felt that way.

Riku: Sogo-san and Nagi get together to talk about their hobbies a lot!

Yamato: Sou actually bothers to hear Nagi’s anime ramblings all the way to the end.

Mitsuki: Even when we're falling asleep from boredom, Sogo will be nodding along to every word!

Nagi: Sogo is a good listener! He listens no matter how long I take, so I often find myself unable to stop rambling about Cocona to him X-)

Sogo: Everyone likes talking about the things they love. It warms my heart to see their affection.

Sogo: Also, Nagi-kun talks in such a witty and fun way. I could listen to him forever.

yo.

Soooooo yeah. I know I’ve been kinda least-in-sight lately and have a very overdue Precipice chapter in the wings, etc., etc. Uh, basically, my BB got behind and then a little bit away from me. Deadline is not an issue in terms of completeness, but it’s gonna be quite a bit messier than I like at this stage in an event like this. Well, I’m planning to Power Through over the weekend and hopefully I’ll get more tweaking done than I expect? We shall see.

ANYWAY. I don’t know how March will look--more on that in Monday’s Coming Attractions post, of course, but work will get SUPER BUSY, along with other ongoing challenge commitments--but I’m still hoping to start posting my regular fics again? Lol. At least finishing Arc Seven so I can move on to Promises and Preludes because I’m super excited for some of the stuff happening there.

But for now, since I know I haven’t posted much lately, and because I’ve been rereading the Valdemar series so it’s been on my mind, I’ve decided to share some more from my Jedi of Valdemar AU! Specifically, this is the Ginormous Timeline of Doom that covers everything from, like, two years before Anakin gets to Haven to Leia’s kids’ generation getting Chosen, etc. (working in a Blended Canon because that’s how I roll) Obviously, this includes many spoilers for the AU in question--and also, because I like to keep certain plot points/character beats consistent, a few things for other fics. Also, this is an admittedly niche-appeal crossover with a fair amount of self-indulgent stuff in here JSYK.

Let’s see, what else...oh! Those of you who read the Family of Spies AU will recognize some OCs from there. One of them actually technically originated in the Valdemar AU, even. Nikolai and his brothers, who get mentioned here, are OCs of mine who in the regular timeline/galaxy are Kallus’s sister’s sons.

Not in the timeline because Space (and also too many additional characters/ages to add): - Anatole and Ziya probably get married somewhere around when Leia and Han do (year 10 of part 2); he’s 22/23 and she’s about Nikolai’s age. Pavel goes into the Guard at roughly the same time, at 18/19; serves with distinction during Palpatine’s invasion; transitions to spying/covert ops type stuff somehow, working as an agent for whoever the Herald Spymaster is at this point (maybe Cassian? Doubling as Weaponsmaster (when said position is filled by a Herald) makes a lot more sense than doubling as Monarch’s Own, and those are the two we’ve seen…plus it would make sense with Cassian’s canon backstory.)

- Sergey, Alexsi, and Sofya are probably born in reasonable intervals over the next 10 years; Sergey will eventually be Chosen. Spellings on the boys’ names are still subject to change.

- Irene is still a Healer; though she’s a few years younger than bb!Anakin and Rose, probably 4 or 5 when they enter the Collegium.

- Bodhi and Jyn are still a big ol’ question mark (though I'm leaning towards her being the Companion and him the Herald?).

- Baze and Chirrut are around Kallus and Zeb’s age, maybe 5-10 years older. Chirrut is the Priest in the Haven Temple; Baze is retired Guard and currently a blacksmith.
