Do you have any tips for those who wish to create a webcomic?

I do apologize if this has been asked before!

this is a pretty big question that would probably be easier to answer if you had any specific things you'd like to know about!

but i can give you a summary of general things i've learned over the years!

disclaimer: these are my personal experiences, if any of this sounds like something that doesn't fit your workflow or preferences, please disregard!

if you've never made a webcomic before, i would personally recommend starting small. do a short oneshot first to see how it feels instead of diving right into your multi-season 2000 pages big epic story, because i feel like the workload can get really overwhelming really fast if you go from 0 to 100 right away. some creators thrive on that but it was definitely not for me. i have a lot of failed and unfinished projects sitting around because i was too ambitious and didn't know what i was getting myself into. later on i started drawing short comics for various fandoms & ships i was invested in deeply, and those got progressively longer until i suddenly felt ready to seriously tackle one of my original stories again. which was when i finally started working on #MUTED!

don't worry about sticking to the strict 60+ panels weekly schedule that you see a lot on platforms like webtoon for example. unless you've signed a contract, you make the rules and decide how much and how often you post. i've seen a lot of creators burn themselves out over that when there really wasn't any need because no one was forcing or paying them to churn out so much all the time T -T) you can still find an audience and success with a slower pace (for example #MUTED was released with 2 episodes a month, 1 ep usually had around 20ish panels iirc)

finished is better than perfect. if you're a perfectionist this can be difficult to accept, but i promise most people won't look at your panels for longer than 1.5 seconds. some wonky lines here and there don't matter much, it's more important to get the feelings across imho.

vector layers (for inking) are your best friend \o/

imho having a pretty clear outline for your story can be really helpful and take away some stress, knowing where the story is going without having to constantly sit down inbetween chapters to come up with more plot is a blessing and i wish i had been better about doing that with #MUTED. i did have a rough outline but a lot of holes in between chapters and in the end some things i would have liked to explore more never got touched on because my planning was bad and i wasn't able to find the room in the story (like some emma back story, more about jasper's family dynamics, also a bit more of a deep dive into kai's relationship with his family) (also towards the end i felt pretty burned out and just wanted to move on haha) [i'm not saying to plan every scene right from the get go, there's always room to adjust and remove or add stuff while you're working on the project, but a few important anker points here and there are important, at least for me!]

shortcuts are also your best friend, use all of them. 3d models too!

when you start publishing, don't get discouraged by algorithms and statistics and numbers (i say as that's something i still struggle with daily LOL), agonising over these things is pointless because they're mostly out of your control, focus on things you can actively do to be proud of your work. also instead of comparing yourself to others, instead compare yourself to past you! look how far you've come compared to the you from last year :>

3. What are some tropes or details that you think are very characteristic of your fics?

During my grad program, my thesis advisor described my writing as "thoughtful, focused, and articulate" and I think all three of those still apply (even though I graduated over three years ago!). I like to track character decisions all the way back to the root (for fanfiction, that means burrowing into their heads and casting them all the way back to their childhood if I have to; for my original stuff, it's a little easier), which means that I do a lot of character work and domestic stuff.

As for details, I focus a lot on hands and eyes. Someone's always watching someone else; someone's always gazing at someone else. Everyone's hands are accounted for, along with the expressions on their faces. I also do a lot of lists. My listing style has been something that I've seen pop up in my friends' writing too and I'm always like hehe I put that there.

Tropes? Eh, not sure. I'm a sucker for when characters are sets. I love characters that have companions, and I love secrets. I love the reveal of secrets. Recently, I've had a small writer's obsession with humans seeing the turtles and processing who/what they are. In the past, I was preoccupied by Pearl finding out Marina was an octoling. Secret reveals are probably my favorite thing in fiction and I love writing them! (It's why I somehow managed to pack like three of them into my Aftershocks chapters.)

7. Any worldbuilding you’re particularly proud of?

I did a lot of worldbuilding when I wrote Sonic stuff. All of the stuff I did in Foray still holds up, even years later! As for more recent stuff, the subtle worldbuilding I did with Casey's dialogue in Aftershocks is still something I'm super proud of. Being locked into Mikey's POV, I could only reveal stuff about the future through dialogue and Mikey's own observations or thoughts, and I tried to make the little bit we got count!

23. What’s a trope, AU, or concept you’ve never written, but would like to?

Gonna be real, I've written over 1.5 million words by this point in my life and I kinda just write what I'm interested in. If I have an idea, I sit down and write it; I don't really stew on things very long. If I wanna write it, I write it!

I suppose right now, I have an idea brewing that involves Mikey and Leo being transported to the past (or an alternate dimension), leaving Donnie and Raph to try to get them back. It's going to be a longer term project than I have time for right now, so I've been putting off writing it (and so it can percolate a little), but I'm gonna get there!

(Okay, I was once really interested in writing a Pearlina wedding, but it never happened and I doubt I'll do it now. RIP.)

hi miss cat, i've been well !! kinda stressed bc of school :(( but i've been worse & it's been okay recently :)) wbu ??

my parents are SCARY strict and all of my friends are scared of them :(( i think i have a good amt of trauma & trust issues bc of that, n that's probably why i also haven't really told him anything personal :/ is that a good or bad thing? when we talked, it was mostly like joking around about shit or roasting our school HAHAHA

he's never really been dry, unless he's not in the mood i guess? but he ends convos every time. the convo length usually depends on him. i'm not sure tho, i don't want to get hurt, esp since i take a long time to open up to others. (i want to have more fun in hs, since i've already spent 1.5 years online 😔😔)

i would ask him to prom,,, i wouldn't be scared to ask if we were friends, but we aren't friends so idk if i should :/ ALSO i was thinking about confessing on april fools 😳😳 i truly believe that is the ultimate power move LMAO. (& the problem is that he never initiates the first text, so we could go months w/o talking if i don't text, which is why we haven't in a while)

so far, he's been giving me pretty mixed signs, like besides all the iffy stuff up there, he kinda stares at me in class & passing periods, like sometimes i'll catch him looking at me (i sit in the back + he sits in the front), but maybe he's looking at the clock 💀💀. he also parks his bike next to mine now?? and mentioned before that he has a good memory (?? am confused) it was after i texted him this semester and he just mentioned that i'm in his class (i'm probably overanalyzing this), etc. his vibe is confusing :(

yes, english :3. it's funny my country is literally known for its diversity & endless languages (and it flexes about it too lmao) but in reality does nothing to help in/encourage learning other languages. hindi & eng are the only languages schools teach & 3rd one depends on what state you live in. minority languages are not even in options.
