Okay, gonna put this below the cut to save everyone else XD also- since I'm not leaving this Mass Effect obsession anytime soon, if you're not interested in seeing occasional posts about it, please feel free to block the tag "night plays ME"~

((also for real I mean it when I say this is rambling as hell lol, apologies and no stress if absolute no one reads all this))

OKAY SO Mass Effect 1-

Stars help me, I was honestly hooked right from the start?? Like even in Legendary Edition (the combined trilogy just re-released in one "can play it on one system + minor improvements", for anyone who doesn't know) where it's smoothed out, of course it's obvious that ME1 is a decade old... but the foundation for these relationships are all there and gods I love them already.

Like - Kaiden right off the top is a delightful good fightin lad, what the hell. I've heard that he's viewed as 'bland' by a good portion of the fan community but I dunno, he's a delight and even more complex by the time 2 rolls around and you encounter him on Horizon, it was honestly Ashley I was way more meh about - mostly because before you can learn about her family history/etc, she comes off as hella xenophobic and I was immediately offended for my growing space family that she didn't like/trust all the aliens around, pfff.

(she gets redeemed a bit through further actions/evolving thoughts, but I thought in retrospect it was a bummer that they didn't flip the order there, give her a chance to be liked before the complicating factor of being so rude about aliens >:c that then she could grow from... ah well. Apparently she has a good arc but uh, let's just say I chose Kaiden at the "key junction" in the latter part of the game so I won't be seeing anymore of Ashley uh... anytime soon, haha.)

Garrus??? Is??????? The ABSOLUTE best???????????

I liked him from the start, I'm always a bit of a sucker for a rogue-detective "the system won't bring this bastard to justice, so I've got to" type and all their moral shadiness XD But he just gets better, honestly, and where I'm at in ME2 (right before the Reaper IFF mission, as of typing this, with everyone's loyalty!) I am only digging myself deeper into this hole-

-*wheezing* okay anyways -

Wrex is AMAZING I love fightin' middle-aged krogan bastard, gods. Liara is great too, I'm a sucker for a wlw relationship (playing fem!Shepard, so) - buuuut I'll admit she's a bit more one-note in ME1. Last week while I was still on ME1 I remember hearing (while trying to dodge spoilers) that her arc is really good, though. I think they leaned a little hard on the 'innocent but sexy' sterteotype on her (so despite the yikes aspect of a few of the things I've learned in ME2, lol, I actually really like the complexity that's been added to her character.)

Saved Liara first, so by the time I got to Noveria and had the standoff with Benezia there was the chance to have emotions over Liara having to face her TwT and of course, I made the questionable but quality decision to free Queen Rachni heheh. no ragrets

More than a blow-by-blow of my choices though I totally wanna take the chance to say that even in the mild jankiness of ME1 (goddammit, the Mako.... please..... please just go up this impossible cliff I just want to resource hunt-) the way that the lore, both obvious/key to main plot and the lesser/filler/background/world-building kinds... I just love it. It incorporates it well, you can go ham in the codex learning more, or just dive into the basics - it's clearly a complex galaxy (and they do an even better job in 2 of fleshing it out further), and it never really felt overwhelming. It was pretty natural figuring it all out-!

Plus the interesting implications of resource hunting amongst the sapient races, and the little side missions you better bet I did every one of- there's so much rich depth in the story if you do 'em!! (And that lead with that Keeper side mission...? Looking back, damn, clever foreshadowing-!!!)

And oh my gods, Ilios??? hell yeah. I loved that mission so much, especially having Garrus & Kaiden with me when talking to the hologram/computer, and more than anything, that last sprint in the Mako trying to get to the jump before it closed-???

Also mannn I love a good setpiece, and having to go up the side of the elevator, space-side?? such a cool setup!!

Plus it felt good having been Paragon enough (as simple as the good v bad vibe system is, I don't hate it, lol) to avoid one of the Saren fights, ngl. And the er, "second fight" with Sovereign-Saren.... hell yeah

... I'll admit I had to double check my choice re whether to save the Council. I did in the end, but I swear, sometimes the way they phrase things I'm like ".... okay but Garrus is right, defeating Sovereign is more important than these few leaders??????" woops. Listen, priorities, is all I'm saying..... (￣ヮ￣|||)ゞ

'Course later they emphasize (in ME2) that there were 10,000 people on that same ship and I was like well I wouldn't have second guessed if I'd known that, I mean c'mon-

Also I did indeed romance Liara in this one, so I got that scene ;Dc But,,,, I also knew by the end that I was totally gonna romance Garrus in 2 since he's an option then finally,,,,, lemme tell you the guilt as I waffled over whether to romance Liara bc of it. hahaha.

Aaaaand Mass Effect 2-

So I'm only up to right before the Reaper IFF Mission, so I don't know the ending, etc etc lol. That said, I've just finished every side mission I've found with the exception of the Shadowbroker Quest and the Arrival Quest (I've heard the latter basically leads into ME3, and the former is best either right before the Omega 4 jump or in postgame).

So from the start - fuck yeah fuck yeah what a high adrenaline start Shepard noooooo but also yes save Joker aH-

The motion comic too hot damn nice job

I loved this setup, seriously - especially forcing Shep into this situation, having to work with/for Cerberus, and the compelling reasoning given behind "why" they do what they do (I especially found it a good point that the Salarians have the Task Force, the Asaris the Commandos, the Turians the- etc... like, true, when you put it like that, having a similar group advancing human interests/solving human interstellar problems is pretty reasonable...). That said, I love too that it really isn't shied away from how Cerberus is nonetheless fucked up - or its at least done fucked up stuff.

Listen, I still think some messed up stuff is gonna be revealed in 2's endgame......... after that Horizon mission and the Collector's ship???? TIM I SEE YOU YOU SHADY MF-

aaanyways lol...

I'm so so glad on a gameplay level they nixed the Mako style exploration. A few Hammerhead missions are fine and a lot more focused than the slippery ass navigation in that glorified ATV, pfff. The probes are a neat way of getting after similar resources - and more importantly, having good levels and some good hubs (the Zakera Wards, Omega, Ilium, etc) is way way more fun than having a more 'sprawling' space that is.... a lot of empty nonsense, lol.

Then there's the fact that we get Joker right off the bat and you can interact with him so much - and him and EDI??? Get out gods I love them. Kasumi is so right when she says they sound like a bickering old married couple lol. I have a terrible feeling that some shit is gonna happen with EDI..... but I don't think she's evil as-is, at least.

Side-eying the hell out of those "access forbidden" parts of her that she doesn't even know.... and the fact that her AI core has a locked door access................... something's gonna happen gdi LEAVE OUR ADOPTED AI ALONE.

(Also Joker pls stop fracturing your thumb on the mute button)

Also please save me there are so many hot aliens in this game,,,,, the xeno/monsterfuckers really comin' through strong in the sequels............... doin' the lord's work........................................

In general, I love how many levels ME stepped up in two with complexity and interwoven narratives!! Like, to the point it'd be almost a drag to replay ME1, even though it was fun going through it (if occasionally a bit tedious with the cookie cutter rando planet science/mine facilities, lol). Like, just from how fun and interesting ME2 is, mostly! more of all the pre-introduced races, plus new ones, plus more filling in of intragalactic politics, and more interesting implications of all these space-faring races mixing....

Also gods WREX and his planet holy shit,,,,, fuckin' hell yeah my man get their shit together and also adopt Grunt yes good-

And Mordin??? My singing semi-evil scientist best friend forced to confront his choices more than he thought he ever would have???? With some of the best ongoing general report chatter of all the companions??

(when I tell you I choked on my coffee when I talked to him after confirming romance choice w/ Garrus and that 'pamphlet' and 'anaphalactic shot if ingesting-' kajsldkfjsldfjk)

Like, fuck, the fact that they actually dive into the mixed morality and horrors of the genophage, and you can confront Mordin on it, for good reason, yet he still stands his ground, until finally some bits of his loyalty mission seem to... affect him, and I'm guessing might set up things for 3 with him? Unsure, but either way, damn, the fact that they start to dig into it...

And Taliiiii my beloved forbidden alien wife TwT her loyalty mission was SO GOOD. I love how varied they all are?? Getting to defend her and discover what she'd unwittingly been a part of-!!

Zaeed is a bastard but tbh I love that he is and that he's unapologetic in him - and Kasumi omg, best thief. A heist?? Gods, yes- I love our couch lounge chats XD

Samara is..... illegally.......... she's an illegally powerful and beautiful and eloquent MILF...........................

(.... listen I'm sapphic as hell and I'm kicking my own ass for picking her up last aksjdlfksjdfl - but her loyalty mission, damn. And seeing how there's this interesting cultural subset, and the struggle with the Asari in that they unquestioningly accept/respect justicars, but also know that the impact outside their culture is a diplomacy nightmare waiting to happen-)

I am weak for morally implicated murder dads okay?? And that voice??? His mannerisms?????? How you first see him, and that prayer after assassinating her...???????? And his history/his people's history with the hanar, gods I love how messy it is, it feels so much more real!

Also Jack is a mess and I love her (and want to get her some therapy, omg), and her and Miranda nearly duking it out after you've done both their loyalty missions??? so good and makes a lot of sense-! Honestly I would love more interactions between teammates on the ship, but there's already so much the devs had to balance I can't blame 'em for minimizing, heh. But suffice to say I also love Miranda and Jacob, even if I'm softest for my alien crew XD Hell yeah Jacob, we'll get loud and spill drinks on the citadel indeed TwT

.... I could write a whole essay on how much I love Garrus oTL Perhaps because he and Tali are the throughlines from 1 on your 2 crew, I have some of the strongest feelings about them... but genuinely, he was one of my favorite companions in the first game, and how you find him as Archangel in two? Getting to help him fight his way out after he's gone nearly 48 hours straight fighting off three gangs alone, jfc. His vengeance quest and what can happen there.... That line? fuck me, that line -

It's so much easier to see the world in black and white. Grey? I don't know what to do with gray...

(also, some other choice faves so far from the series from him include We can disobey suicidal orders?? and This wasn't in my training manual... [in 1, if you have him with you @ th Thorian fight] and his whole.... pop the heat sink - in his romance ;Dc)

asdasdfksadjfkl like I said I can write an essay on him PFFF suffice to say I'm very looking forward to his romance scene and where things go in 3

But yeah gods I'm just gonna keep rambling if I'm not careful lol. Gods I don't even know what to talk about it's all so good and while I can understand people roasting the obviousness of Paragon V Renegade (v neutral) choices/alignments, I think they do a pretty damn good job in 2 of pushing it further - to the point that there were some times that I accidentally got renegade points and I wasn't that mad, haha. There's so much fun in the interactions that I just have a good time anyways~

I have so many thoughts about TIM (The Illusive Man) and Cerberus.... theories evolving galore............... and like, what the hell!! Omega 4 going to the center of the galaxy is such a cool twist, goddamn - though my heart still breaks at losing Kaiden (his line if you haven't romanced him?? about feeling like he lost a limb when he lost you??? holy shit.... but I also can't blame him for not trusting Cerberus to the point of it affecting his ability to trust Shepard... like fuck Shep go after himmmm) I'm really excited to see where that goes since he comes back in 3, and what the fuck happens with Cerberus bc while I love the fact that obviously there are a lot of people in it for the right reasons, doing good work, there are those that are doing the opposite, and I have a very bad feeling about where TIM will end up landing....

All that said though I need to do the Reaper IFF mission (where I'm lightly spoiled as to getting That Boy, but not how/what happens to make it so - just that it's apparently wise to have all your side missions done before getting him...) and the actual Omega 4 jump. So we'll see what happens and what I think about it from there heheh!

clearly, i have Thoughts.

well it’s nice to see that people still have ‘hating tyler posey’ as a personality trait long after the show has ended!

a) unless I have missed something (which! is possible!), his comment about being objectified is something he has taken back/gotten over. like, people are allowed to change their minds and second-guess things even if they stick with it/like other things about it/enjoy being naked ;P

b) also, and this ties in to ‘c’, he is like. notoriously honest and unfiltered. it means he doesn’t always word things the best way. I have never really heard or seen him actually being MEAN to anyone?? the angriest I’ve ever seen him is when he went off on transphobic assholes.

c) as always, I see people are complaining about him ~baiting~ and pandering. I saw some tweet the other day like “you are not pansexual!!” he NEVER SAID HE WAS. he never fuckin gave himself a label; everyone ELSE is doing that!! thus far it seems the ‘sexually fluid’ label seems the most fitting--because guess what! even if he is Mostly Straight that doesn’t negate his own fuckin personal experiences. he’s not BAITING just by nonchalantly describing his own life experiences and it’s honestly gross to me that people keep doing this about him hjshfjksd

d) I also like how people that have supposedly been around act Super Shocked that he’s Like This as if he hasn’t always been. yes, there’s more...information we know now, but he has ALWAYS talked about sex and been ridiculous. yes, even ~back in the teen wolf days~ Anyone remember Doin’ it Raw? (I miss it) anyone recall video of him naked from behind and shooting his girlfriend with nerf darts or whatever? anyone remember behind the scenes video of him shakin’ it in boxer briefs in the school showers set? anyone maybe recall the interview where he GOT WHIPPED BY A PROFESSIONAL DOMINATRIX AND DUG IT? because I sure recall all of that!

e) lololol at people constantly like ~he’s so unemployed~ like... I think he’s okay. he had roles lined up before covid hit; who knows if they’re still being planned or not, but also: he is constantly making music with some of his FAVORITE MUSICIANS. travis barker drummed on his song. john feldman produces his shit. he’s gonna release two EPs this year even if he doesn’t act another day (which I hope he does!). I am preeeetty sure he’s good. (also, he has ALWAYS been teen wolf’s biggest fan, supporter, and leader. which of course makes it even grosser for all the hate and racism aimed at him, buuuut yeah. so naturally he’s gonna always be like “yeah I’d love to do it again :D”; it doesn’t automatically equal LOL BECAUSE HE CAN’T GET WORK OTHERWISE)

f) back to pandering for a second--no, talking about hooking up with a dude is not automatically pandering. you CAN argue that onlyfans as a whole, and especially those video chats, are pandering, but that’s...what they’re there for. people are kinda paying to see people naked or almost naked. they’re paying to ask insanely sexual and personal questions. what on earth do you expect?! (this is not me JUDGING anyone on onlyfans by the way. there’s a reason I’M not on onlyfans--no one wants to see me and I also don’t want to be seen ;P) and would you rather he somehow screen so that only straight women are allowed to look at his stuff?? otherwise it’s BAITING and pandering to ~the gays~??

g) in other news, I do, however, worry a lot about his lack of sobriety. he SAYS it’s not nearly like it was before he got sober, but is it? will it get bad again? PLEASE BE SAFE AND HEALTHY I WORRY SO MUCH :(

h) NATURALLY I forgot something: but! various actors DO like... ~discover~ more about themselves when planning certain roles! did it ever occur to anyone that MAYBE his playing a bi dude and then a GAY dude maybe made him like 'huh, I am curious about what it'd be like' ?! (though even before that he mentioned how he’d Do Stuff with guys if he wanted, or whatever, see: Doin’ it Raw)

um. to sum up (lol), I am just so amused at how I, one that scrolls very carefully through the posey tags with my eyes squinted so I can move quickly past bare ass and Other Things, am like, less traumatized than the judgey mcjudgers.

note? ig: im diagnosed with adhd buuuut i probably also have undiagnosed autism and idk how to separate those symptoms tbh so im not gonna be too specific about what's what ig. this truly will just be Pure Projection soooo

let's go!

-was absolutely that one kid growing up that got either "never applies himself" or "has good grades, but issues with socialization" on report cards

-bad at making and maintaining friendships :/

-school probably tested him and was like "yeah there is something here but we arent gonna diagnose bc that means we have to give him Actual Accommodations" and then stuck him in SPED classes which just got him bullied ajsksk

-has bad sensory issues with like. the feeling of skin and the sound of like silverware on plates, it literally makes him wanna peel his skin off. there's other ones obvs but those ones are the worst

-sensory overload makes him incredibly agitated or just downright pissed. gets very snippy but doesn't yell bc yelling feels Weird and he doesn't like it

-cant wear more than 2 layers, cant sleep with more than one thin blanket, it makes him feel like he's being suffocated and having his movement restricted

-always stimming but pretty good at making it unnoticeable, has a lot of normalized stims like playing with rubber bands, leg bouncing nail tapping, cracking knuckles, etc.

-but when he isnt trying to hide it? ohhh boy is he a loud motherfucker, very into stims that involve noise like rolling his r's, doin lil brr sounds, clickn buttons on like remotes and stuff, etc.

-not very good at masking tbh

-mmm echolalia galore

-flappy hands!! lots of flappy hands :]

-stims by hitting the balls of his hands/wrists together repeatedly, is probably one of his most used stims

-has like. harmful stims when he's upset or in pain? like hitting himself, scratching himself, etc.

-has lil dancey stims but only really does them in private or around close friends

-so flipping people off is already basically a stim in canon lbr but imagine he starts doing 👉👈 as a joke and then it just becomes a Default Stim. he jus be standing there and outta nowhere he's goin 👉👈 while having a completely normal conversation

-very bad at reading tone and social cues but he just wont admit it. refuses to ask questions either. leads to a lot of bad situations but he'd rather die than ask for clarification

-if you don't tell him exactly what to do he will just kinda. be confused. like you need to give him a step by step tutorial otherwise he will not do something very obvious on his own just incase he's wrong

-uhhh pls dont put him in a situation to comfort someone he will say and do all the wrong things even if he's trying his best

-the most dry texter known to man bc he refuses to have important conversations over text due to Lack Of Tone Indication (his friends would be an exception bc tone indicators pog but still greatly prefers irl)

-dont ask him to read a book he'll either hyperfixate or end up rereading the same page over and over again bc he retained nothing

-does a lil high picthed mm sound when happy flapping and usually rocks back and forth with it :]

-will be in the middle of the test and you'll just hear him softly muttering "bonk. bonk. bonk. bonk. bon-"

-basically any tiktok sound he hates turns into a stim at some point

-has a playlist just titled "neurodivergent moment" bc he's that kind of person. the first song on it is the home of 47, followed by stupid mf (idk if the person who made the home of 47 ((trolleycat)) can reclaim the r slur but it's used a good amount in the song, stupid mf is just blatantly ableist tho lol)

-*info dumps by tearing apart his favorite media and then gets offended when a NT does the exact same thing*

-calls things ableist when they dont go his way

-has a lot of oral stims like give him anything he can chew on and he will fucking destroy it unless it's made to be chewed

pairing - ripley triton & puck sherman ( @pucksherman )

time - during winter break

setting - a christmas party

summary - ripley and puck get drunk at a party, play games and discover mistletoe hanging above them.

puck:

It was the happiest season of all, at least after as many drinks as Puck had it was. He was just getting to that buzzing feeling in the back of his skull, and man. Was it great. The party hadn’t been all that bad, either. Even if it was filled with less environmentally conscious people that were leaving their red Solo cups lying around. Sober Puck would have gone around and cleaned them up, but he was neither sober, nor the host so the task went ignored -- at least for the time being. Later on he’d probably pick up what he could find, but at the moment all he cared about finding was his friends. Well, that and maybe another cup of rum and coke, and luckily he didn’t have to go far to find that one. Finding his way into the kitchen, he found a mostly full can of cola that still had fizz which he figured was still alright and emptied it into his cup. The rum wasn’t too far behind and he generously added that to his drink. Now all that was left was to find a friendly face. “Ripley!” Puck held his drink up a bit so as to avoid spilling it as he moved through the crowd. “Rip! C’mere! I made you something!”

ripley:

Ripley was ready for a party. She had to go home soon and she wasn't ready to get drowned out by the swarm of her family. So before was going to leave she was going to have as much fun as she could, naturally. Though the mess everyone was making couldn't go unnoticed. Ripley held her own cup filled with beer, the stuff was gross but that was never the point of drinking, right? She sipped on it as she tilted over to pick up some of the trash she found on the ground, stumbling a little, but she managed! Pulling the drink back to her lips she held onto the cup with her mouth while she threw the trash away when she heard her name being called from across the room. Her head lifted up, seeing her friend approaching her. She grabbed the cup and smiled as she walked over to him. "Puck!" She exclaimed excitedly. She loved her friends insanely and was so thrilled to see him there. "What's up?"

puck:

Of course she was picking up the trash -- she was so much better than him, even in her inebriated state she was making the world a better place. Puck honestly thought the world was better just because she was in it, she didn’t even need to try cleaning it up to accomplish that. And her smile always made him smile, although at the moment it was a slightly goofy one as they met in the middle. “I made this for you,” he said proudly, beaming from ear to ear. Until he noticed the drink in her hand. But then! A brilliant idea! “Oh, you already got a drink. Here! Let’s trade!” Puck didn’t even wait for permission, just pushed the drink he brought into her hand, and with his other he took the other up out of her grasp. “So whatcha doin’?” What she was doing had been obvious, trying to clean up after the filthy party-goers. But that didn’t stop him from asking and immediately offering his services. “Need some help? There’s a lot of cups on the ground.”

ripley:

Just like that the entire mood of hers for the night shifted. She was with her best friend and she always had a good time with him. It never failed no matter what they were doing. She embraced him briefly with a kiss to his cheek before she pulled away. Ripley had always been super touchy and close with all of her friends, probably coming from such a large family with no personal boundaries. "oh, sweet!" She exclaimed when he showed her his surprise for her. Then suddenly her drink was being taken from her hand and his drink was being put in her other. Without missing a beat, the cup was already tilted back as she took a swig of the contents from in the cup. Squeezing her eyes tight from the warm burn down her throat, then shaking her head to bring her back to the conversation. "Yes! These people are absolutely careless. They're just leaving the damn things everywhere!" Her eyes rolled as she crouched down to pick up a few that were tossed randomly by the drunk party-goers.

puck:

Puck was very much used to the affection that Ripley tended to show to both him and Beau; but tonight, and probably because of the booze, it hit different and he couldn’t stop the grin on his face from becoming more idiotic and lopsided as he backed away from her embrace. He went to take a drink from his newly acquired cup when she tipped hers back, although instead of enjoying it he nearly gagged at the sudden switch from liquor to beer. “Woah,” he coughed, “You’d think they’d spring for a better tasting beer at least.” But the quality of beer wasn’t the important part -- cleaning up was. Puck absolutely agreed that the other party-goers were careless; he hadn’t seen that much garbage in one place since he looked up the Great Pacific garbage patch. “Maybe we can make it more fun, like make a game out of it. Oh, you know what? How about for every time we toss a cup into the basket,” he held up the cup containing beer that he’d gotten in the switch, “We take a shot.”

ripley:

A lingering thought trailed Ripley's mind before it was very quickly lost right after she'd planted the kiss on Puck's cheek. Thinking while getting drunk was not an easy task. Especially while being half concerned with the growing number of trash that was being littered as the night carried on. Her head shook at Puck's comment about the beer. The taste is awful, worse than the liquor, but it was her go to drink. "I'm not surprised. They're very clearly not thoughtful." She could feel the the effects of the alcohol slowly creeping in. She'd stood and held the cups she picked up from the ground, nodding her head to his idea. It'd be a good way help keep their fun going while also cleaning up. "hell yeah! That's an awesome idea." she looked around to find a good distance from the trash for them to shoot from. "Hmmmm about here?" Ripley took one last guage of the place before she looked at Puck for his approval.

puck:

“Good as a spot as any,” Puck replied, although he hadn’t really taken the time to scope out the area to really know that. He was really just going along with anything Ripley said, and if she thought the spot was good he would trust her judgement. “I know usually it’s ladies first, but…” he drew out the word as he got their “hoop” ready and raced back to stand next to her. “I’m totally taking it. Sorry, Rip.” Puck was no sports star, but he wasn’t half bad at basketball; the chance to show off his skills was enticing to him. Well, that and the fact that he couldn’t keep drinking if he didn’t make the shot. Bending his knees slightly, he pulled his hands back and gently tossed a cup towards the trash can. Usually he wouldn’t be surprised if he got it in, but in his slightly inebriated state it was a little bit of a shock to see the cup tip in -- even if it was just barely. That didn’t stop Puck from striking a victory pose, pumping his fist in the air before taking his drink. “Hell yeah, that’s how it’s done!”

ripley:

Once the spot was designated, Ripley's attention was torn to look for more cups surrounding them. It wasn't hard to find any, party-goers were tragically unbothered by the mess they're leaving behind for no one to pick up. She grabbed a few while Puck was setting up their basket, putting them on a counter next to them. "Whatever, you can take first shot. But I'm still gonna totally crush you." She laughed as she rested against the frame of the doorway, watching him take his first shot. She nearly took a drink from her own cup before remembering the rules. She needs a shot to win but she wasn't so much worried about that. Ripley considered herself to be quite athletic, but she was pretty tipsy. "Oh shit!" She cheered when Puck made his basket. Her cup raising, "Okay okay, nice first shot. Buuuut it's my turn." Grabbing one of the trash cups she stands back and gauges the distance then taking a shot to the trash can, it bouncing off the back rim and dropping inside. She turns, flipping her hair for 'style points'. Her hand reached to lift her own cup to take a swig of her liquor. "Can't wait to get fucked up."

puck:

“Okay, okay,” Puck rolled his eyes playfully as she tossed her hair back, giving her a slow and sarcastic round of applause. “We get it, you’re amazing. No need to flaunt it.” Although that “flaunting” was the exact same confidence he loved about Ripley. Never had he met someone that exuded so much confidence in themselves; and as confident as he tended to be, he knew he wasn’t nearly on her level and he aspired to be. “Okay, Miss Alcoholic, chill out. You’ll get a drink soon enough. But for now, time for the master to take his shot.” He took a moment to line up his shot and then tossed the cup, praying that it made it’s way in. It bounced off the edge, and for a moment he was sure it was going to drop into the trash can… but instead it fell the opposite way and back to the floor. “Dammit!” Puck groaned, raking his fingers through his hair before resting his hands at the nape of his neck and letting his head fall back. And that was when he saw it. “Uh, Rip? You notice that there before? You see it, right? Or am I just so drunk that I’m hallucinating?”

ripley:

"You're right, I am amazing." Ripley laughed, holding her hand under her chin as she looked at Puck. Her eyes batting for an added effect, she was now being extra on purpose just to tease him. "Too bad I didn't hear you say anything else after that." Her comebacks were being sullied by the effect of the alcohol in her system, the thought processing not turning as creatively. She loved messing with her friends, especially Puck. He always made her laugh. It was one of her favorite things about him, aside for how he cares so much about.... well everything really. She rolled her eyes at his comment, calling her an alcoholic. "yeah yeah yeah, go ahead 'master'" She stood next to him, leaning into the doorframe while she watched him take his shot. "oh no, the master struck out!" she raised her hands up in surprise after watching the cup fall onto the ground. She was just about to go get the cup when he called her name. "Seen what?" Following the trail of where he was looking, she was able to see the mistletoe hanging above them. Had they been under that the whole time? "Hallucinating mistletoe would invite its own questions. But nope, I see it too." She paused for a second and maybe it was the alcohol or just the tradition that shouldn't go ignored. Her shoulders shrugged for a second before her arms crossed over her chest. "So... should we do it?" The question meant to come off as nonchalant, but she honestly couldn't tell if that's how it came out. Now that the opportunity was presenting itself, she couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to kiss him.

puck:

Puck almost missed the question he was so entranced by the plant hanging above them. It registered after a moment, and he couldn’t help the slightly lopsided smirk that crossed his face. Almost as if he was replying with an “obviously” although he gave no verbal response. At first anyway. It wasn’t until he’d seen the look on her face that he rethought his answer. He’d only been about to say ‘yes’ because of the silly tradition; after all, what was one silly, stupid kiss between friends. But the expression she wore, one he couldn’t read, threw him for a loop. What was she trying to say? That she hated the thought? He wouldn’t blame her if that was the case, honestly. It was a tedious line to cross, one that could ruin their entire relationship. He hated that thought too. Ripley meant the world to him, if their friendship ended over a silly, stupid tradition he wouldn’t know what to do with himself. But he couldn’t help but wonder, ‘what if it didn’t ruin it though?’ His mind then flashed to the missing part of their trio -- if it didn’t ruin his and Ripley’s relationship, what would that mean for Beau? Would he think himself a third wheel? ‘This is entirely too much overthinking,’ Puck thought, shaking his head to stop himself from going further. It was just a stupid kiss, one they didn’t even have to share. Unless… did Ripley want to and that was what the look meant? Great. *More *overthinking. It made his head hurt, but that could be blamed on the many, many drinks he’d had. Besides, he knew there was only one way to stop the questions, and that was to ask one of them. “Uh, do you want to?”

ripley:

Ripley then took a second to think. Puck had seemed a little hesitant and the drunken buzz she was feeling was slowly going away. Not significant enough, but enough to turn on the thinking portion of her brain. She hadn't considering anything before she'd said the words. Of course she wanted to. Kissing Puck, it'd be just so easy for them to kiss right now. But the hesitancy, did that mean he didn't want to? Did she go too far? Ripley tended to go to far with things. She's an action person. Do now, think later. He was her rock in that way. Many of her thoughts kept bringing her back to the same place. "I do." she nodded her head a little, softly chewing on her bottom lip, a worried eyebrow raising as she watched for his expressions. the space between them shortening subconsciously. "do you want to?"

puck:

Her answer left him floored. Ripley really wanted to kiss him? That was something Puck hadn't been expecting to hear, nor had he expected the light fluttery feeling in his chest when she gave that answer. He’d thought about it sure, with a girl as cool and fun (not to mention as gorgeous) as Ripley, how could you not think about that sort of thing? But their friendship had always been the most important thing to him, so he tried to keep those thoughts at a minimum. Tonight though, it was hard to keep them at bay. Especially when she was inching closer to him. Puck had never been a nervous person, but he could feel them starting to make themselves at home as he followed her lead and took his own small step forward. Drawing in a short breath, he gave a nod as he answered, “Yeah.”

ripley:

Maybe it was the drinks that stayed swirling in her system or maybe it was the fact that he'd just said he wanted to kiss her. Either way Ripley felt a palpation in her chest. He was standing so close to him she could touch him without much of any effort. The few thoughts that floated through her head coming to a quick stop as she braced herself to lean fully into the kiss. It didn't take long for Ripley to forget about everything else around her. Until a few very drunk people walked through the hall joking around next to them. She broke the kiss after one of them stumbled into both Puck and Ripley. Feeling like her heart was racing u controllably, she'd quickly deflected by moving from the loud partiers and grabbing her to cup. She chugged from the plastic red cup and started dancing, pulling Puck with her.

Goop Plays Kill la Kill the Game: IF (Satsuki Episodes 5-8)

Oh my goodness.

Episode 5

So, this episode starts off with that haunting line featured in the recent Anime Expo story trailer:

Ragyo: All of this is because of you, Satsuki. Because of who you are.

I guess Ragyo’s saying that Shinra-Kouketsu came into fruition because Satsuki couldn’t prevent this outcome, no matter her efforts, but I gotta say that I was expecting something a lot more sinister. But that’s just trailer magic for you, I suppose, lol.

And I know I said in my last write-up that I really enjoyed interacting with the story, but okay, I get what some reviews were referring to now. Fighting the COVERS felt extremely tedious.

Satsuki: Ugh, this is endless!

Same, Satsuki, same.

Though, to be fair, I don’t know if it’s the Steam port or my computer or what, but part of the reason playing through this segment felt so bad is because it ran so badly. It was slow and glitchy and an utter pain.

Still, I will say that fighting the COVERS with the Elite Four was a bit of a better experience purely because of the cute introductions when each of them joined Satsuki in battle. I particularly loved Nonon and Satsuki’s exchange:

Nonon: Nonon here, at your service!

Satsuki: I’m counting on you, Nonon. Stay sharp out there.

I mean, aw??? Satsuki saying she’s counting on someone? My heart. And that’s not even mentioning that she uses Nonon’s first name.

It’s a real shame that there are no subtitles for these bits. Those playing in Japanese who don’t understand the language will totally miss all of these moments.

But then again, the achievement for the battle is “Unspoken Understanding,” so these words aren’t really necessary.

They’re so cute, though!

Anyway, on the subject of the Elite Four, my question about their Goku Uniforms gets quickly answered here:

Satsuki: Your Goku uniforms!

Houka: Iori patched them up fast, m’Lady. Nothing compares to his skill with a needle and thread.

And LOL, okay, Shiro can just sew four complicated outfits in like five minutes. Life Fibers: ain’t gotta explain shit.

(To be real, though, I’m honestly not bugged. Details like this just amuse me. And I really like that Houka says this line.)

But what the heck is Shiro referring to here???

Shiro: There’s just one thing that bothers me...

Satsuki: What?

Shiro: It can wait. I’ll come talk to you after the fight’s over.

As of episode 8, I don’t think this talk has occurred? Or did I miss it or something?? What bothered Shiro??? I don’t really have an idea!

Episode 6

It kinda cracked me up that Shinra-Kouketsu didn’t seem to be that far from complete. Nui, what the heck were you doing in the anime? It seems you could have finished that thing in a way more timely manner.

Nui: Awww, Satsuki! You’re too late. I just finished!

But on a more serious note, seeing Satsuki lose control and become Mind Stitched is heartbreaking. I knew at about this point that I was getting close to the end of the story, but gosh, I want so much more. I want to know how Satsuki feels. I want to know more about her history and what she’s done up to this point. Seeing so much go unexplored leaves me aching.

Still, I know I’m lucky to get any Kill la Kill at all after all these years....

Poor Satsuki, though... She’s had to fight all these battles, and then this happens....

But I will say... one thing I actually don’t think I want to know is what Nui ended up doing....

Nui: Okay! I’ll just stay here and mess around then!

Episode 7

Now, episode 7 is the absolute cutest.

Ryuko: Finally. Thought you’d never wake up.

I want ten hours just of the characters being cute like this. They don’t even have to like, do anything. They can just sit around and talk. This is my jam.

Back when the show was first airing, I remember so many people wanting Ryuko to save Satsuki after the Festival. This episode is the perfect embodiment of that dream. And it’s honestly better than I even expected. They are precious.

Ryuko: Can you move?

Satsuki: No. That’s not good.

Goodness, Satsuki, you are such a dork I love you.

Buuuut. Uh. I have so many questions.

How much time has passed? Have the Elite Four been awake a while? Were they talking to Ryuko about Satsuki for a long time (and can I please, please see this in Ryuko’s story?)

And, most notably, how the heck is Senketsu back together again?! Maybe I misunderstood what happened before, but didn’t Ragyo take one of Senketsu’s pieces? How can Senketsu Synchronize with Ryuko without that piece?? What did Ragyo want to do with that piece, anyway? What is going on.

As cute as everything is, it’s also a bit soured for me when it’s revealed that Ryuko was convinced she’d killed Nui.

Ryuko: I thought I killed you!

Just recently, I actually got into a whole discussion on the subject. Apparently, in the Grand Summoners mobile game that had a crossover with Kill la Kill about a year ago, Ryuko states that she’s perfectly willing to kill others without remorse.

And, uh.

Okay, was anybody going to tell me that the Grand Summoners/Kill la Kill crossover had a story, or was I just supposed to read that in a discussion about whether Ryuko would like Shadow the Hedgehog or not myself?

But anyway, I figured that Ryuko would say something like that purely to sound tough. I’ve always viewed her as a sweet who wouldn’t truly want to kill anybody, even Nui (which is why she ultimately doesn’t kill Nui in the anime).

Perhaps I’ve just interpreted her character all wrong, and maybe it’s unfair of me to expect too much depth from a 3.5-hour story in a tie-in anime fighter game, but if Nui is the first person Ryuko’s “killed,” I just... expect more of a reaction. Even killing someone you hate must make you feel something if it’s the first time you’ve done such a thing. Ed killing Greed in the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist anime is a brilliantly powerful example of that, and Ryuko is a remarkably sensitive person when it comes to how she impacts others—her reaction after going berserk in episode 13 is a testament to that.

Of course, I haven’t seen Ryuko’s side of things. Maybe she does freak out after she’s done the deed. But I don’t know. From what I understand about Ryuko—going easy on Mataro’s gang, helping Maiko despite trying to be tough and saying that it’s everyone for themselves, hardly even being able to function after losing control and hurting the people she loves, putting all her doubts aside to “save” Nagita—it’s hard for me to believe that she’d be so unaffected by killing someone, especially in retrospect.

I mean, heck, she doesn’t even kill Nui in this episode despite saying that she will and honestly having the opportunity to!

Ryuko: I don’t care how many-a-you there are! I’ll kill you all!

And it’s even weirder to me that Senketsu would be okay with this! He’s the one who says in the preview for episode 18 that “to kill as you please with a smile on your face is evil.” Why would he help Ryuko murder for revenge?

It’s Not That Deep, Goop, I know. But it irks me.

Still, I can (obviously) appreciate the charm of this short story. Nui’s little cloth dolls are adorable, for example.

Episode 8

And getting into episode 8, I love that Ryuko didn’t even understand what she was doing when she cut off Nui’s arms, but she acted so sure of herself anyway, like she totally knew that’d work out.

Shiro: But if you cut those Fibers from both sides simultaneously, they can can’t regenerate.

Ryuko: Ohhh, so that’s what happened with Nui’s arms.

And oh lordy, they are precious.

Nonon: Jeez, Satsuki. Don’t bow down to the new girl! What’ll people think?

But at the same time, we’re missing so much of the power of the anime here. When Satsuki bows down to Ryuko in the anime, it’s so meaningful because she understands that she messed up. She shouldn’t have used her own sister as a tool and a weapon. She went too far. This is cute, but it feels undeserved.

Carrie Keranen, Satsuki’s English voice actress, said in a recent ArcLive that the Satsuki’s apology on the Naked Sol was her favorite scene to voice. She talked about how Satsuki felt she was doing the right thing but realized that she didn’t have to go to the lengths she did. I was so hoping for the game to delve into that realization more, and there is still a tiny bit of time for it to do so, yes, but it was kinda sad to see the bow here before that.

I’m also kinda confused about what’s going on. What is Uzu talking about here?

Uzu: Yeah and besides, Matoi here was saved ‘cuz of you. She should be the one doin’ the thanking.

How exactly did Satsuki save Ryuko? She, uh, kinda tore up Senketsu.....

On a completely different note, I’ve noticed in the past that the localization is kinda wonky, and you definitely feel that in this episode. Ryuko says that she has the Rending Scissors, but then the subtitles call them “Snippity-Snips,” lol.

And more complaints about Ryuko, but I’m not sure I dig her being characterized kinda like a dimwit. “Primordial” isn’t that difficult a word, c’mon.

Ryuko: Wait... Prime-oatmeal?

Maybe it makes more sense in Japanese. Or Ryuko’s just really hungry.

I did appreciate this line, though:

Ryuko: I ain’t here to make friends with you all.

Oh, Ryuko.

But can’t say I appreciated this one:

Ryuko: I’m gonna kill that loli bitch!

Can we just... not with that word, please.

I loved the ending, though. Satsuki, you are such a sweet, oh my goodness.

Satsuki: That said, I’d like the four of you to go after her. Protect her, if necessary.

Awww! She really does care.

And the fact that she prioritizes her students?

Satsuki: I’ll make sure all students are freed from the COVERS and once I’ve arranged for their rescue, I will join you.

Satsuki a sweet, okay. Satsuki is good.

Aight, I know this is really long already, but I gotta say that I really appreciate that Ryuko and Senketsu share a place in the Voice Library... even if their names don’t show up together there....

I’m also super curious about those bonus voice lines, but I feel like it’d be cheating to buy them now, and there are probably spoilers in them, too... and I’m broke in this game, lol.... But very excited for it!

And I’ve said it before, but can we just appreciate all the love put into this game some more? Look at all those voice lines! 146 for Ryuko and Senketsu alone. And all characters seem to have at least around 70 lines. I’m fearful about how this story will end, but goodness, the dedication put into this game will never stop being charming.

One more thing... when I started up the game again, Mako was narrating instead of Senketsu! I looked at these voice lines and realized that everyone can be the narrator, but I wasn’t sure how you trigger it to change. Learned today that it depends on the buttons you press during the introduction!

Again love all the effort put into this game.

In sum, I’m not sure how this thing’ll end, and I am nervous, but there’s a lot of charm here, even if I wish there was more. It’s hard to stop playing and write these posts, but I also feel like I gotta let this stuff sink in a bit! I don’t want to break my mind by going through way too much Kill la Kill content at once!

A little rant about Doc from Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

First, I’ll say... this post contains MASSIVE SPOILERS for this movie, so if you haven’t seen it yet, don’t read on unless you don’t care if things get ruined for you, heh.

Next, I’ll mention that this is not a platform to shame the movies in general or to say Final Chapter sucked. I know a lot of you can (and would) say most if not all of the movies sucked, whether on their own or in comparison to the games, but I really love them, despite their flaws. So we’re not going to hate on the movies... except in fun ways, heh. There is a lot I have been able to enjoy, piece together, extrapolate on with these movies, maybe because I have a writer’s brain and a pretty good imagination, so I can overlook certain failings of horror/scifi movies and see their potential in other ways. It’s brain candy for me, so I can’t hate them too much.

Except... Final Chapter... Doc. (sigh)

Words cannot express how much I hated this character. I could just stop there. Buuuut, I won’t. XD Read on if you don’t mind spoilers or you hate Doc as much as I do, haha.

Right, so... Doc. This guy right here.

Doc represents to me the epitome of bad writing, bad plot twists, bad plot twist reveals, and bad scripting. I cannot say bad acting, because... with what this actor was given to work with I think he did a good job. Too bad the writing and script made him look like a total ass.

So, Doc was made exclusively for the trope of good-guy-turns-out-to-be-spy. I mean, it’s overused, but in some cases it’s an effective and even necessary trope. Not here. Aside from the fact that Doc served no discernible function in the entire movie other than to save Alice from a trap he let her ride into in the first place, Doc was written so poorly that anyone with a decent amount of experience in mapping out and writing story arcs could spot his flip a mile away. But then, once his duplicity is revealed, the movie’s banking on the viewer’s acceptance of this “revelation” is so complete and so obvious that he actually changes in personality, demeanor, and body language. Come with me while I rip Doc’s character apart for being such an affront to expertly crafted spy and betrayal arcs everywhere.

We first meet Doc when Alice wakes up from riding into a trap that full-body bitchslaps her off her motorcycle and causes her to fall unconscious. She wakes up to Doc trying to ram a needle in her heart and get her full of adrenaline so she’d wake up. (sigh) Imma already stop here. Because... already we have problems. When she asks him what's in the syringe, the conversation goes as follows:

“I needed you awake.”

“Why?!”

“Somethin’s comin’. Somethin’ big. Same direction you came.”

I just... *rubs temples* I have so many problems already. First of all, this is supposedly a group survivors that have barely enough to live on in a building crumbling so badly that it’s down to its metal framework. Where... the frick... is he getting pure adrenaline from? Okay, his “name” is Doc. I’m guessing that’s not his real name. Maybe he was supposed to be an actual doctor? I’m not buying it, and they never really went into that at all. Anyhoo... if we ignore that there’s really no way he would have something like that (unless it was given to him... but I’ll get back to that later), the bigger problem of how does he know something big is coming remains.

You might be like uhm... the armies of undead? Headed their way? That the Dr. Isaacs clone is leading to them? Duh. *wags finger* Okay, just wait up. First of all... how does he know what it is? What does he have like a sixth sense? I thought that was Alice’s job. And second of all, this would almost fly if they had said he saw it through the binoculars or something, but then later on when Abigail alerts Alice to the armies headed their way, she acts as if this is new news. Did Doc see it and just... not report it? I mean, if he was a spy, that would make sense, except that NOBODY REACTED AT ALL to him saying that. My first comment if I was one of the survivors would be, who the hell is this chick (Alice)? But my second one would be, wait what? What something big? Holy crap, Doc, why didn’t you say something?! But nobody reacts. Okay. Fine. Maybe it’s just bad script writing. Yeah, it is, and it only gets worse.

So then when Alice begins to succumb to the really bad wounds she sustained from hitting the trap, she’s taken to Doc’s little infirmary, where she’s offered... mouthwash? Hahaha, I mean that’s what it looked like to me, this bluish-green liquid that’s like... okay, wtf is this now, and where did he get it from? He says it’s the “specialty of the house,” and that it’ll have her on her feet in no time. Sure enough, Alice drinks this shit, and she’s all better. No limping, no more gross coughing, she’s fine! Wtf.

I wanna know what that stuff was, because nothing would have instantly fixed the bruising, possible broken rips, maybe a puncture lung, and possible other broken bones that Alice must have had from that trap. Unless... it was from Umbrella. Honestly, after I had written the earlier scene off as just not making sense because of movie crap, heh, this scene really made me think something wasn’t right with Doc. I immediately had the notion of... he’s getting information and supplies from Umbrella. That’s why he has this great stuff that heals people, that’s where he got the adrenaline from, and that’s how he already knows the armies of undead are coming. That combined with the “Alert our operative in Raccoon City” comment from Wesker pretty much confirmed it, but I’m not done with this scene yet.

So once he fixes Alice up, Claire and him have a little moment. And I mean little. Literally all we get of their relationship is this scene and a bit of hand holding later on. But yeah, they stand close together and that’s supposed to mean something, and then Claire says to Alice, “You know, he and I...” and Alice says, “I noticed.” That’s it. It’s almost like the movie was coming out of itself and telling the view, “Oh, by the way, these two are involved. That’ll be important later, so pay attention.” I mean, seriously, it was so blatantly, extraneous, and unnecessary, and therefore it felt out of place and odd. Also rushed. For all those reason, I already had Doc pegged as the traitor.

And how typical would that be? It’s always the guy you least suspect, right? The movie tries to set him up as a hero, an honorable badass. He’s involved with Claire, and we all like Claire. (Okay, not everybody likes Claire, or Ali Larter’s portrayal, but the movies assume you like her.) You’d never suspect the guy who helped Alice and who was involved with Claire would be a bad guy. They go out of their way to make Doc seem like a great guy - maybe too great - complete with the stoic, calm, suave persona the actor portrayed. He never lost his head, kept other erratic members of his group in line, was a natural leader, and seemed to have a lot of honor. All of these were red flags of a character that is being set up to be too glowing in a world of ambiguous and downright evil people.

Then... we have Doc’s participation through the standoff with the aforementioned zombie armies, the descent into the Hive, and eventually delving into the Hive. He was always asking Alice about things. Where are you going, what are you doing, have you seen (insert name of underdeveloped minor character here)? He really seemed to want to keep tabs on people, always know what was going on, always know what was happening next. To me, that’s exactly what a spy would do... except they would be MUCH LESS FREAKING OBVIOUS ABOUT IT. Double agents who are constantly asking WHATCHA DOIN’ THERE? don’t make it very far, heh. He couldn’t have been more obvious if he had an “I’m a spy” sign on his damn forehead.

And at this point, I feel like the movie might have feared that you were catching on, and it tried to point you in the wrong direction like a kid who says HE LOOK OVER THERE to get you to turn around and then runs in the other direction. I see what you did there, movie. When the Red Queen warns Alice about the “informant” Umbrella had in Raccoon City, the camera skips around to everybody present, Murder on the Orient Express-style, as if to ask the viewer oooooh, who could it be? And in doing so, the camera stops on everybody for a fairly decent moment, until it gets to Doc. Then it kindof flits away like WHOOPS you didn’t see him, don’t suspect him, it’s not him. (sigh) Yes it is, movie. I totally called it.

So yeah, that’s half the reason I hate Doc. They way he was set up was so contrived, and the path leading up to the reveal is so obvious, that I didn’t feel like it was a twist at all. By the time Doc is revealed as the informant, I was surprised at the movie’s insistence that this was big news. I honestly was shocked to realize that they hadn’t blatantly already told me that. That’s how obvious it was.

The other half of why I hate Doc is the change in him after he’s revealed as a traitor. Up until then, he was brave, unafraid, cool/calm/collected, stoic, tough, you name it. Golden badass boy. And a leader. Then we’re told that he’s an informant for Umbrella, and all of a sudden, he’s acting like a totally gullible, unintelligent, dumbass. This irritated me two-fold.

Firstly, the trope that good guys are sexy, calm, and collected, and bad guys must be irrational, erratic, and insane idiots in order to be bad is PLAYED and UNREALISTIC. Why does Doc’s personality need to change after he’s revealed to be a duplicitous asshole? Why can’t he still be a suave sexy bastard, but just be evil? The second he’s revealed as an asshole, he becomes a spineless follower instead of an honorable leader, sucking up to Isaacs by telling him he’ll disable the charges Alice placed in the Umbrella High Command cryo-tubes (even Isaacs patronizes him by saying, “You’ve done well, Doc.” It’s the way he says it. It’s clear he thinks Doc is nothing but a dog to order around...) and then begging for his life, first to Alice and then to Claire. By the time Claire is getting ready to shoot him, he’s yelling out loud in fear of being shot. Was this at all consistent with Doc’s bravery from before? I would have actually liked the character a whole lot more, even despite the crappy buildup, if he had remained the fearless leader-type character he was before he was revealed as a traitor. That would have been so much more interesting and frankly dangerous than the groveling, sniveling, erratic mess he became.

Secondly, I was really pissed off at how little he cared about Claire. And frankly how little she cared about him. Like... granted, their relationship really had no fleshing out whatsoever, but I have a writer’s brain and I tend to fill in blanks on my own. You tell me they’re in a relationship? I’m gonna assume a certain level of bonding has occurred. Now, this kindof goes along with the whole "good guys are badass and villains must be insane dumbasses" peeve, but why can Doc not be a spy for Umbrella AND be genuinely in love with Claire? It would have been far more interesting and compelling of an end to his arc if he had continued to love her and defend her until the end.

I mean, I can tell you why he didn’t. Because if the Resident Evil movies suffer from any catastrophic failures at all, it’s that they insist upon character fitting molds and tropes. It’s too difficult, tedious, and time-consuming to have characters that don’t fit the mold because then we have to address those feels. First of all, these movies don’t have time for that, they’re incredibly rushed. Second of all, they assume for us all as viewers that we don’t want emotions and uncomfortable psychological issues (outside the bare minimum norm for this genre) in a horror/action film. This is evident in them cutting many other scenes in the franchise that would have brought up difficult talking points and emotions, such as the White Queen questioning the morality of Dr. Isaacs butchering so many Alice clones in his obstacle course of death in RE: Extinction.

How uncomfortable and outside the box would it be if Doc still maintained the same affect he had before the reveal (strong, stoic, brave) AND defended Claire against Wesker. Not that he had a change of heart or anything like that. He can still be a villain, but can also genuinely love Claire. The two things are not disqualifying against each other. How cool would it have been if Isaacs ordered him to kill Claire and he said that’s the one thing I won’t do, and then he’s shot for it or dies protecting her from Wesker? That would have been...... awkward at best for the viewer, because you hate this guy. He betrayed Alice and Claire, but then oh... he does really love her and is a brave guy despite his morals not being in the right place. Uncomfortable.... but good.

But horror/sci-fi/action movies tend to not go to places like this with their viewers because they feel it ruins the action or the feel of the movie. To me, Doc would have been more compelling and seemed more realistic and human if things had gone this way instead of the way they did. Villains are real and they’re among us. They’re human just like us. They’re not robots, they’re not all insane, they’re not all grovelling spineless idiots. Sometimes they’re brave dudes who love people. Yes, villains can be capable of great love, and showing that in Doc would have been a very powerful moment. I also would have appreciate a tear or SOMETHING from Claire. I understand he’s betrayed you, but you’re in love with him, or at least involved somehow. Show us that you care, even despite knowing what you have to do.

Phew! *sits back and fans self* Okay. I feel better. I finally got out this long rant about this character that I’ve had in my for a while, haha. This was actually a lot of fun to write.
