The Villainous Timeline (Part 1): Flug & Miss Heed
Made this theory to calculate, breakdown and understand the Villainous Timeline. (I will be making 2 or 3 parts as ran out of space for photos.😅)
Part 2: Demencia and 5.0.5.
Part 3: SunBlast and Miss Heed
Alan mentioned on Instagram that:
"The Villainous timeline so far followed real life (as shown on Miss Heed and Penumbra's Instagram) but when the show airs, it’ll slow down and follow its own timeline as they wait for more episodes to release, but it’ll be similar to ours. As we know, all actual real events happened in Villainous and BH even had some influence over them, so I’m sure they’ll still follow ours but at a different pace."
So 3 points to note:
The Villainous Timeline Follows our Time line but at a different pace.
The timeline slows down when the show airs.
BH has some influence over real events happening.
This is confirmed here as when the show airs in 2021, in Episode 4, the date here (in red) is shown as 14 Jul 2021.
Tumblr media
So Given the Ages and Timeline:
Flug is 26 yrs old in Aug 2019
So in Aug 2022 Flug is 29 yrs old. (until Aug 2023, when he becomes 30 yrs old)
Flug's Journal and Demecia's Diary came out on 21st Feb 2022
Flug said in his book “I have been working as the chief scientist of the Black Hat Organization for approximately 8-10 years.” [Google Translate]
Tumblr media
Flug's P.E.A.C.E. files mentioned he has been working in Black Hat Organization since March 10, 2011.
Tumblr media
21st Feb 2022 - 10 Mar 2011 = 10 years 11 months, 11 days.
So, Flug has been working in BlackHat Org years for 10 years (11 months, 11 days) - (Note: round up to 11 yrs for easier calculation)
29 yrs old - 11 years = 18 yrs old.
Based on the year in the photo of Flug’s Thesis in Episode 6, we can conclude that Flug's thesis started out and was finished on the Year 2005. If it was longer there would be a time range. (e.g. 2005 - 2006)
Tumblr media
2022 - 2005 = 17 years
29 yrs - 17 years = 12 yrs old
If they follow Mexico School System, Black Hat Institution should either start in early July or late Aug.
So Flug started going to school either in Jul/Aug 2005
So Flug was 12 years old when he met Miss Heed and started going to Black Hat Institution. (So they started at middle school age)
This was probably the class photo taken on the 1st day of school.
Tumblr media
It's shown he was celebrating Halloween so this picture should take place on the 31st Oct, so they've known each other around 2-3 months at this time.
Tumblr media
According to this article, It takes around 2-6 months to write a thesis
So maybe Flug has to submit his thesis at the end of the year in Dec 2005 before Christmas, as there were no Christmas decorations (I think even if BlackHat hates Christmas, the Villains would probably celebrate Christmas in their own evil way)
So Miss Heed probably stole Flug's thesis in Nov-Dec 2005 and left to become a hero at the age of 12 yrs old.
So, Flug and Miss Heed knew each other for about 4-5 months.
According to Miss Heed's P.E.A.C.E. Files, she was 17 yrs old while the experiments were being conducted.
17 yrs old - 12 yrs old = 5 years.
So does that mean that Miss Heed was experimented on at P.E.A.C.E. when she was 12 years old, for 5 years before she got her powers at the age of 17 yrs old? (Unless something happened between the 5 yr gap.)
Also, According to her P.E.A.C.E. Files, she needed to train her powers, which might take a few months or immediately.
So this picture with Flug staring at the TV looking at Miss Heed, might be when he is 17 - 18 yrs old before he joined Black Hat Organization.
Tumblr media
Conclusion:
-> Flug has been working in BHO for 10 yrs 11 months, 11 days, since he was 18 yrs old.
-> Flug and Miss Heed were 12 yrs old when they met each other for about 4-5 months.
-> Afterwards, in the same year Miss Heed left to become a hero and might have been experimented on for 5 years before she developed her powers at the age of 17 years old.

HGAC 1/144 OZ-06MS Leo SEVEN-LEO ARMY UNITS 1 & 2 (standard type, cannon type)
Building the Tallgeese put me in a bit of an After Colony mood, which diverted me from both my usual focus on Universal Century mobile suits and my preference for the 1/100 scale.
Much like the Tallgeese itself, I'd always been fond of the Leo, Gundam Wing's extremely destructible common grunt suit. Between its utilitarian, no-nonsense design and funny little TV head, the Leo is both believable and charmingly quirky. I'd always found Leos appealing and wanted to build one, but the only kit ever produced was a non-grade offering in 1/144 scale from 1996 (which I've still never ever actually seen).
...That is until the Leo came to the High Grade After Colony line in 2018.
I became aware of the HGAC Leo as I returned to Gunpla work in 2021, after 10 years away from the hobby. Although I'd always been disinterested in the smaller 1/144 scale, my longstanding desire to build the suit and the very positive reviews of this particular model were enough to convince me to give it a try. Plus, as such a small kit, the low price tag represented a negligible sunk cost even if I ended up disliking it.
Tumblr media
Reader, it turns out the HGAC Leo is the Pringles of Gunpla. It is so easy and fun to build, so outstandingly posable and expressive, and so cute that it's all but impossible to resist the notion of building a whole squad of them. I was further compelled into this rabbit-hole by the discovery of the full weapon set kit, a P-Bandai offering that includes the whole arsenal of assorted Leo weapons, as well as option parts for equipment variations. Deciding to build one little Leo quickly snowballed into raising a small army of them.
After some calculation to determine how to divvy up the armaments from the full weapon set, I concluded seven Leos would be the right number to build. Thus began my Seven-Leo Army project.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the first Leo, which I equipped simply with a shield and beam sabers, I used some of the option parts from the full weapon set to make the cannon type variant for my second unit. Knowing I would have many extra parts for the Leo's standard drum-fed machine gun, I gave unit 2 a pair of them to double down on its double-barreled vibe.

Hello there, beautiful human. Have you formed any theories about the number 76 that she recently mentioned (I think it was watching 76 hours of tv a day during quarantine or something close)? I'm not good at this kind of thing, but I know there are lots of fans that are. Excited to see what she might have been referring to!
hello lovely anon!
i thought about thinking about it, but i haven’t taken a crack at it yet! it’s been on my to do list..
has anyone thought about it?
what i remember is that she said it on las vegas night 1 (march 24th, 2024) and she said it in the speech before betty, i think it was when she was talking about things she did during the pandemic.
76 hours after would have been.. maybe like.. march 27th or maybe 28th depending on when she said it
76 hours before would have been like 3/21 at maybe 5pm or so? that kinda brings out the hr benefits knowhow spidey senses in me 🥴
**edit: i corrected this bc i was using the date calculator wrong before
76 days after is 6/8/2023
76 days before was 1/7/2023
76 weeks after is 9/6/2024
76 weeks before was 10/8/2021
76 months after is 7/24/2029
76 months before was 11/24/2016… 🥴 thats kinda like the continuing love blackout count

How is Walker season 2 streaming's performance compared to Walker season 1 and The Boys season 3? I'm checking Flixpatrol and it seems season 2 is not doing as well as S1 did, and way below TB S3.
7 months ago (X) I said that Walker would edge out The Boys with 5 billion minutes per 20-episode season, based on Live SD+7Day, CW website and app, and rewatch value.  And this is just the domestic numbers for Walker vs The Boy domestic/foreign numbers.
My (very conservative) calculation is based on The Hollywood Reporter and Pedowitz interviews: 610 million minutes per quarter = 101,667 million minutes per episode divided by 60 minutes = 1.70 million viewers.  CW website and app gives Walker another 1.70 million viewers, a total of 3.40 million unique viewers.
3.4 mil viewers X 60 minutes x 20 episodes = 4.08 billion minutes.  Then add rewatch value (46% based on re-run ratings) and it easily pushes season 2’s total viewing minutes to 5.9 billion minutes, overtaking The Boy’s 2 numbers of 4.8 billion minutes.
Reminder: Walker’s 4.08 to 5.9 billion minutes for season 2 does not include HBOMax and foreign numbers. Once you add those then Walker would easily edge out The Boys season 3 numbers.
So how did my speculation pan out 7 months later?
Let's use data from Showbuzz Daily and Spoiler TV for 15 reruns and 20 new episodes that have aired so far:
My super conservative calculation:
SD+7Day for 15 reruns + 20 new episodes * 60 minutes = 2.59 billion minutes
CW website and App = 2.59 billion minutes
Total = 5.18 billion minutes.   See, my speculation was very close.
Reminder: Walker’s 5.18 billion minutes for 10 months from 2021-2022 does not includes HBOMax and foreign viewership numbers.  Add those and Walker edges out The Boys (current) viewing numbers of 6.2 billion minutes.

My Top Posts in 2022:

Just forever thinking about that last Nace scene in the episode (3x13), and the profoundness of Nancy waiting a month, isolating herself for a month from those she loves - grieving a life - grieving her life. How she basically lived off the flashes and glimpses she would allow herself to see of Ace in passing as she calculated when and where and how to bypass him, how she knew he was probably thinking of a million reasons why she was avoiding him and none of them were even remotely close to the truth, how that morning, she went to everyone and maybe even debated with herself as she drove in his direction if she would even stop, but then her car is parked before her brain can fully make the decision (her heart does it for her). And then she tells herself the lie of maybe he won’t be home. Maybe I can just see how he’s doing and I won’t have to face him - and that idea doesn’t make her feel any less assured in what she’s doing - it only flares up the persistent and permanent ache residing in her chest.
She breaks in and he’s not there and so she allows herself space, breathing room, to look at how far he’s come, and she’s so immensely proud of him even though she was proud of him before- proud of the man he was - because that’s who she fell for - all these achievements are just affirmations of what she already knew he could be - and she wants to tell him this - that none of it really matters in the end - only he matters to her - so much - and she can feel the tears start to well as…
“…I would have just let you in…”
I know you would have she probably thinks. But some of us aren’t strong enough to ask.
Some us waited a month to even come here. Some us hate that we did because now that you are here, it’s just going to make time all the more cruel - the minutes after I leave - the hours left in this day and the next and the next - theyll all be filled with you. With the thought of you.
But then he’s in her space because her feeble attempt at conversation is weaker than she anticipated and he’s telling her how far he’s come and she already knows but he didn’t need to - so “you never were” slips out and now he knows - at least a part of the truth - was that enough?
No, because then he has a theory and he was always so smart of course he hadn’t thought of a million wrong reasons - he thought of the singular correct one.
And she wants to tell him he’s right - that he figured it out like he always does - but would that be too much? If she just agreed. Would that spark the start of the curse? They are already this close after all - he’s so close - and if she just -
There’s nothing to be afraid of…
And the familiar echo of glass cracking tells her this scene would always end this way - she could never change the ending.
(it was her fate now)
And so the anger bubbles over because why did she have to be condemned to this life? Why her? Hadn’t she lost enough?
The universe apparently doesn’t think so.
But then her frustration rattles her enough that in the heat of the moment she spats it out -
“Look through my eyes…”
She slams the door and rests herself on the other side - she doesn’t know what she left him with- maybe a broken heart - maybe pieces of hers…
Maybe hope…

What better time to introduce the ever popular locked in one room trope than in Nancy Drew Season 4 when one character has something she can’t possible tell the other because his life is in the balance and the other character knows something is wrong with her just by looking in her eyes.

I'm posting this information separate from the rant I just went on so hopefully this data gets out there
In 2021, Netflix (US) had over 6,000 titles in their library. If I am generous with my numbers let's say 4,000 are movies and set every runtime as 1hr. 45min. And then assume that the 2,000 TV shows are all single seasons with 10, hour long episodes each
That is 27,000 hours of content on Netflix alone
That is is 3 years, 4 weeks, and 2 days of straight content on 1 single service alone (math was done through a time calculator on calculatorsoup.com)
That is insane
If I was even more generous to Netflix and kept that the shows were all 1 season with 10, 1 hour long episodes, but made only 1,000 of the 6,000 listed titles TV shows and lowered movie runtimes to 1hr. 30min. It would still be 17500 total hours of content, equal to 1 year, 11 months, 4 weeks, 1 day, and 4 hours of straight content
To add some further prospective on this, I'm going to use Critical Role. Critical Role is not on Netflix, is technically an individual show and thus would completely add to the above data with no overlap (so like if I took the number of titles on the other streaming services and did what I did above and just added to that number, it would be difficult to account for duplicate titles within them, Critical Role is just a single show that would add time to how much content you could watch before having no choice but to watch something new, and would show the extreme saturation in the market for movies and TV shows that proves Netflix doesn't need to be cranking out so much content)
According to what I can pull up from critrolestats.com they have the runtimes for the Core series, core series+other, list the times separated for Tal'Dorei, Wildemount, Marquet, ExU, and one shots that are further broken down into gameplay time, and time for the 1st and 2nd half. I will simply use the Gameplay time but will give both core alone and core+other
The Core Series Gameplay time is 945 hours, 52 minutes, and 39 seconds
The Core Series + Other Gameplay time is 1138 hours, 47 minutes, and 25 seconds
For those of you who don't know about Critical Role, the information you need for this is that they release episodes that are generally 4+ hours long, they have had 3 campaigns on top of spinoffs and such, typically there are 3 episodes released a month (On Thursdays). It is a massive undertaking to go through and watch (or, heaven forbid, rewatch)
With these numbers I can determine that Critical Role would provide 39 days, 9 hours, 52 minutes, and 39 seconds of straight content from the core series alone
The Core Series + Other would provide 47 days, 10 hours, 47 minutes, and 25 seconds of straight content
That is so much content from 1 single additional show, but let's also take this one final step further. For this part I will only use the hours and will round down no matter what so it remains underestimated not overestimate. People talk about Critical Role being prohibitively long, but Critical Role's is the equivalent of about 3.5-4.2% of the length of the total amount of content on Netflix from the first generous data set and still only about 5.4-6.5% of the total amount of content available on Netflix
These numbers appall me and I am going to take it a step further AGAIN. Let's say you work a full-time (9 hour days (Includes 1 hour lunches), 5 days a week) job. I will be generous and say you live close to work and thus have no commute factored in but will not say you watch TV during your lunch or before work at all. I will be generous again and say you only sleep 6 hours a night and that eating, personal care, etc that can't be/isn't done while at work or sleeping takes up 1 hour of time hour of time, during which TV also isn't watched. That leaves 8 hours a day 5 days a week you could be watching TV, with an additional (for the weekends I will say you sleep 7 hours, have 2 hours of other time you are not watching TV during) 30 hours of TV time on the weekend, for a total of 70 hours of TV a week
That would mean it would take you over 385 weeks (Over 7 years) to finish all of Netflix's content under the first conditions and still 250 weeks (Over 4 years) under the second set of conditions
I watch way more TV than most people since I'm disabled and home all day. If I was a bit overly generous let's say I watch TV 13 hours a day, which is 91 hours of TV a week, it would still take me over 296 weeks (Over 5 years) with the first set or 192 weeks (Over 3 years) to watch all of Netflix's content without repeats
That is 1 service and is incredibly generous with the numbers. Other services along with normal movies and TV shows not on a streaming service would only bring these numbers up even higher
That is too much content
The entertainment industry is becoming bloated with content (a lot of it being poor to medium quality) because they've completely lost touch with their point. It has become a cash grab instead of listening to audiences and consumers and creating content that people believe in and/or enjoy. The plot has been both literally and figuratively lost as Netflix and other companies continue to throw shit at us (most of which we either don't care about or was poorly done or doesn't actually work/make sense) and expect us to thank them and ask for more when the reality is we are begging them to stop

Chapter 7 - Would That We Were All So Blessed
He had them set a relatively small, somewhat intimate table close to the balcony, where later the night breezes would stir the drapes, and the lingering warmth of the day could still reach them.
It fascinated him - intellectually - that he had gone to so much trouble to try and make things perfect, for her, Teniope; that he wanted to. It was well within his power, his right, to simply command her, to skip these pointless formalities and indulge his needs but… but… there was the rub. Had he not chosen her precisely because she was like unto no other at the Gossamer Court?  If he simply ordered her to service his needs, did that not make her just like all the others; those others that bored him. Those others that disgusted him?
But was not disgust a strong emotion? It was new for him, to be acting not through calculated logic but by the calling of his… what? The desires of his heart?

AO3 wrapped 2022 writer's edition
Based on this ask game going around but I figured I'd just answer all the questions for fun!  All 30 answers under the cut.
1. How many words have you written this year? 42,048 on AO3, and I have another 20k or so that's not published yet
2. How many works did you publish this year?  10, which includes my Yuletide fic that's not revealed yet but not my consent issues fics which aren't quite done, and I guess also includes the ones I wrote for holiday stuff last year that got posted on like Jan 1.
3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)? how many spruces grow on the moon?
4. What work of yours has the most hits? workout
5. What work of yours got more feedback than you expected? definitely also "how many spruces grow on the moon" because it's such a niche rarepair!
6. Favorite title you used this is also how many spruces grow on the moon lol
7. If you use song lyrics, which artist’s songs did you pull from the most? actually none of my titles are song lyrics for this year
8. Pairing you wrote the most for this year?  I didn't write much this year but I did two for Aho/Jarvis so that's the winner
9. Favorite pairing you wrote for this year?  ...that's also gonna be Aho/Jarvis based on what I've written so far I think.
10. What work was the quickest to write?  escape because it's like 300 words I splatted into a tumblr post
11. What work took you the longest to write?  hmmm, I'm not sure!  I think it was either team bonding or workout because it's always hard to manage that many characters together
12. How many WIP’s do you have in your docs for next year?  well, I have two that are nearly done that I'm planning to post for consent issues so those will be this year but also revealing like Jan 1, and I have one hockey wip that I would like to not abandon since I put so much work into it already but idk if it'll happen.
13. What’s your longest work of the year? team bonding at 10,130, but one of my wips for consent issues is longer
14. What’s your shortest work of the year? escape at 362
15. What WIP are you taking into next year with you?  I guess the Aho/Jarvis omegaverse wip that I haven't finished?  I don't know if I will finish it or not though, but it's not getting done this year for sure.
16. What’s your most common “Additional Tags” tag?  Apparently it is "2021-2022 NHL Season"
17. Your favorite character to write this year?  I am having a blast writing Tim Stoker right now so it's gonna be him at the moment.
18. The character that gave you the most trouble writing this year?  Roope Hintz for sure, idk why I had trouble with him!
19. What’s one pairing you want to explore next year?  Jon/Martin for TMA, although I feel like I'll end up writing weird stuff that's just about one of them or the other but with that as a background throughline?  idk we'll see
20. Which work of yours have you reread the most?  ngl it's probably workout
21. How many kudos in total did you get this year?  702 on fics that were written this year, I'm not sure how to calculate how many I got on older fics during this year
22. Which work has the most comments?  how many spruces grow on the moon
23. Did you do any collaborative works this year?  well the actual real book I self-pubbed was a collaboration, but I don't think that counts?  All my fanfic is like a pseudo-collab between me and the people I complain to about it constantly while I'm writing lol
24. Did you write any gifts this year?  Yes!  This year almost all my fic was gifts actually.  Of the 10 that are in AO3, 4 of them are gifts, and my two that are finishing up for consent issues will also be gifts.
25. Did you receive any gifts this year?  Yup!  4-5 depending how you count Dec 31/Jan 1 posting dates.
26. What’s your most common category?  M/M
27. What do you listen to while writing? nothing usually, maybe hockey on the tv in the background lol
28. Favorite work you wrote this year?  it's gonna be how many spruces grow on the moon, I felt like it was a fun concept to base it on Duolingo, and a cute little romance and like....not coming-of-age exactly but kind of?  and it was much better received than I expected given that it inaugurated the ship tag.
29. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?  Martin telling Jon "I've never been afraid of you watching me" in see you later because I'm obsessed with it as a character beat
30. Biggest surprise while writing this year?  I guess the biggest surprise of the year is finding a new fandom?  Or maybe the fact that I randomly wrote a Stargate Atlantis fic in the middle of this year sometime, definitely wasn't expecting to do that!  Also the good reception for my Aho/Jarvis fics, that was a nice surprise.

Queer Media Example
Hello everyone, I hope your week has been fantastic so far! Tomorrow I will discuss a media example related to this week's readings. Raina Deerwater, who analyzed LGBTQ+ media representation in the article "LGBTQ Representation Reaches New Record Highs" focuses on the volume of Queer, lesbian, Bi-sexual, and gay actors on streaming platforms between 2021-2022. To elaborate, 58% of LGBTQ characters are POC exceeding the percentage of white LGBTQ characters on broadcast television. This year alone, GLAAD counted "42 transgender regular and recurring characters across all broadcast, cable, and streaming services" (Deerwater, 2022). These numbers are reflected in Tv shows like Orange Is the New Black, Pose, Euphoria, and many other fantastic cinematic productions. Hollywood is making profound changes to LGBTQ representation; out of 775, 390 characters are POC, and this number is growing. It is remarkable how far we have come. Production agencies are headed in the right direction. In the past, tv shows that have LGBTQ characters have tried to represent these categories through a heteronormative lens. I want to illustrate this by talking about the 2006 tv show Ugly Betty. America Ferrera, who stars as Betty Suarez, gets a job at Meade Magazine as an intern. Claire and Bradford Meade, founders and owners of the magazine, allow Daniel and Alexis (their children) to run the publication. This was a reasonably progressive tv show due to the portrayal of the transgender character, Alexis Meade. She has a relatively significant role in the production, but her role is very inconsistent. Prior to her transition, Alexis is well built, and is seen as a sporty jock. After she transitioned, ABC hired Rebecca Romijn to step in as Alexis, a completely different actor. While breaking down beauty misconceptions, Ugly Betty still failed to represent trans people accurately. Alexis was often dead-named and spoken about as if she was "still a male". This can be seen in the youtube clip where she is called he and mocked by her brother, Daniel.
The show did not allow Alexis to speak about her transition and robbed the audience of witnessing their first trans character in many ways. She does have moments where she grapples with her transition, but you can tell that the writers did not have the capability to use her storyline in the way they should have. This is most evident in the youtube clip where Alexis is freaking out that she can’t do anything right.
To add on, It seems as if ABC was juggling multiple identities and could not figure out how to make them intersect. This is best expressed by Ludmila Leiva, who wrote the article, “TV Is Getting More Progressive, But It's Failing Queer POCs”. She states, “These calculated placements of emphasis, on race instead of queerness or visa-versa — as if the two identities are mutually exclusive — occur constantly in the media” (Leiva, 2017). In earlier scenes, Alexis is heterosexual; however, after she transitions, she is only seen dating men. In this sense, it was the choice between having a gay trans character or a trans character. This show had a lot of potholes and inconsistencies but still gave some space to LGBTQ categories at the time.
This space also included two gay characters, Michael, the assistant, and Mark, Betty’s Nephew. While they both identified as homosexual, Mark is Latino, which resonates with a portion of the LGBTQ community we don’t see on tv two often. Mark and Miachel are both portrayed as queer, outspoken, and fashion gurus. The difference between Alexis and these two supporting characters is the storylines. Mark is shown coming out, experimenting with his sexuality, and changing his identity. There was more time fulfilling his character arc than any other LGBTQ character on Ugly Betty. This is not necessarily bad for the audience, but if given the opportunity, Ugly Betty could have represented four or five LGBTQ categories than just 2.

That's not what the deal was. 50% of any profit over the original 20m budget goes to her and the production team. Any increases in the budget due to covid delays aren't the production team's fault and will be paid out of the film's insurance policy. All the data on dwd cites its original budget of 20m.
//Does 20m include marketing cost too? Cuz i dont think so. Normally those budget numbers don't include marketing cost. Your article says film makers will get 50% of profit when a movie breaks even, and for a movie to break even, the revenue should fully cover the marketing cost too. And film's insurance policy doesn't matter when calculating the total estimated cost and formulating a budget. Other movies made during the covid went through the same problem and all budgets got increased, regardless of insurance policy. production budget getting increased is not the production team's fault, but it is just what happened during the pandemic. That's it.

Mister 1000% ROI
Bruce M Firestone, PhD, and Andrew L Firestone, BA (Econ)
Any time someone offers you investments with returns of 1000% per year, you are right to be skeptical, but this is what Australian economist “Mr 1000%” Andrew Firestone has been working on for a number of years now. He reckons he will be able to present how households can add an equivalent of $60,000 to $70,000 AUD to their annual income with some fairly simple approaches he has studied and researched. These are activities with a very high return on their labor, capital, time and sweat equity inputs. I told him about the tiny house movement philosophy of “less house, more life” and he loved that idea, his tag line is “Better Income – Better Life,” a similar pattern.
But wait, it gets better. Like veg-o-matic, K-tel direct-marketing TV pitchmen of the 1960s whose mantra was, “It slices! It dices!” you pay no income tax on these earnings.
Tumblr media
The Veg-o-matic
Huh? How is that even possible?
First, let’s work through the 1000% ROI number then deal with personal tax issues.
Full of Beans Case Study
Some years ago, Andrew purchased a pack of bean seeds for $3.50 that produced 250 grams per week of the sweetest freshest beans you can find anywhere; this went on for nine months in Canberra where he lives with his family[2]. The Canberra area has a relatively dry climate with warm to hot summers and cool winters. Elevation about sea-level is around 580-meters (1,900-feet) and you can see snow in the foothills around the capital city of Australia from time-to-time.
To keep them producing, Andrew staggers his planting. He then harvested seeds from his best producers to use for the next year (this will become important later).
Over the year, his bean yield was around 9 kilograms (nearly 20-pounds), which (as of 2021) retailed at $3.90 per kg in-store or $35.10 for his 9 kg. Now estimating his ROI is simple arithmetic—
ROI = ($35.10 - $3.50)/$3.50 = 903%
So, not quite a 1000% return, but getting close with two other key factors still to consider. It might be useful to note that a quick online search of bean prices today (circa 2024) shows much higher prices per kg for beans, ie, $11[3]! Now that’s inflation for you… And don’t forget—since Andrew’s bean seeds are now free, his ROI is currently infinite.
“But whoa, hold your horses[4],” you say. The above calculation doesn’t factor in the cost of Andrew’s labor, right?
Tumblr media
Marble Bust of Homer
That’s true. It doesn’t. But it also doesn’t yet take into account taxes. For Andrew, the labor cost to add would be the income he could otherwise earn. But he is on a fixed salary and picking up a part-time job would be impractical. So, the real alternative is Andrew sitting in front of his TV for nine months instead of experiencing shinrin-yoku (the Japanese term for forest bathing), one could argue that his cost of labor is zero or even negative since gardening can be a positive health event, providing both exercise and mental well-being. Plus, how much work is involved? Very, very little, he informs us.
Tumblr media
Practising forest bathing in Japan[6]
When he lived with his family in a small townhome, he was able to sneak his seeds into a tiny and neglected patch out front and just put the water to them; he used a bunch of weeds he removed from the scrubby yard as mulch. In the photos below you will also see a mandarin seedling he put in as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Andrew’s sneaky, puncy townhouse microgarden: YUMMY
What about income tax?
Well, the beauty of self-production is you don't pay any. If Andrew could have worked extra hours to buy his beans, he would have to pay income tax on that income before he was allowed to go ahead and spend it. There are a couple of ways to think about tax. Firstly, if he was to go out and earn the extra, he'd lose close to half of that marginal income to taxation, so the beans would really have cost at retail (back in 2021) about $70 in after-tax income[7]. Or if he was just using his regular work income, he would lose on average 25% of that so his beans would have really cost $46.80.
He tells me, he sees this pattern over and over again with home-based production. There are some less good returns, growing watermelons or pumpkins, for instance, but many traditional pastimes such as gardening, sewing, home preserving, brewing, etc will likely hit the 1000% mark.
In fact, Andrew calculates, a household could make the equivalent of $60,000 to $70,000 worth of taxable income (but, in fact, not subject to tax) at home per year doing these sorts of tasks!
Gender roles
As far back as the early 1980s, researchers noted that, “Women do two-thirds of the world's working hours but receive only one tenth of the income and own one hundredth of the property[8].”  But this need no longer be the case—traditional crafts are being rediscovered and families are making many of them “team sports.” Things on the following list are now being done by all—
home cooking/baking,
child minding,
dressmaking,
tailoring,
networking/sourcing/bartering[9],
yogurt making,
woodworking[10]/furniture production,
cakemaking,
candle making,
gardening (aka backyard homesteading),
cheese making,
beer brewing,
raising backyard chickens and/or ducks,
planting and harvesting fruit trees,
knitting,
load shifting—adding solar panels with battery storage[11],
clotheslines,
paying off your mortgage as quickly as possible[12],
hunting large game with old trucks in national parks (maybe 😊)
beautifying property with large shrubs/trees/creating a food forest[13]
retrofitting roof insulation where standards are poor[14]
Vertical urban farms
Andrew is also skeptical about the economics of vertical farming (as well as the lack of nutrition in they produce). And he is not alone[15].
He writes—
At the very least, vertical farming has to be direct to consumer but having the word “selling” in there is going to make it tough—all the regulatory issues, packaging, and taxes and other charges will likely kill them. They would have to be like strawberry farms back in the day: Give customers a basket and let them pick their own; the operator just weighs it at the register. But I can't see how that very, very, very expensive capital could ever pay for itself and the maintenance costs on those systems will be extreme. You have mineral rich water flowing through small pipes and pumps; it’ll be a clogging nightmare. You will have major condensation issues and molds will grow plus all sorts of ventilation problems. These can't be magically solved. They’ll need expensive energy and capital systems to deal with it. And in terms of this being “green,” not at all! These systems use steel and glass, and they are hugely energy intensive to make and run. There is no way to make that energy back over their economic lifetime. This is just some feel-good greenwashing.
By the way, you can make super cheap dome greenhouses using plastic sheeting and poly pipes that would have much less environmental impact. But places like Canada and the US Midwest aren’t ever going have economic, full-on heated greenhouses. If they go the cheap poly dome route and get more out of their shoulder seasons (that is, forgetting about December to February periods), they have a shot to make local produce work (better). Residents should simply put a bunch of raised garden beds with domes in their existing backyards over a weekend for something like $100 bucks.
Beautiful Legs Case Study
Andrew went hunting for a nice dining room table—one with actual real wood. Retail prices for this sort of thing were around $2,400 AUD at the time with a manufacturer’s rebate (coupon) available of $300[16] so a net effective price of $2,100. Thinking of proving his point once more about 1000% ROI being widely available but little known, he purchased 2 pairs of steel table legs for $85 and scrounged around for some old wooden planks, which he paid $105 for and set about doing some home woodworking himself. Again, his ROI is simple arithmetic—
pair of steel legs                              $85.00
solid wood planks                           $105.00
total cost          (home-based)        $190.00
retail price                                        $2,100.00
margin                                                $1,910.00
ROI                                                       1005%
E&OE
This did take him a while to complete so you might want to factor that in, but frankly, when returns are likely measured in triple digits or quadruple ones, you can stop measuring.

[2] In a cold northern shelf city like Canada’s Capital City (Ottawa), you would probably get six months and then only if you start your seedlings inside.
[3] For example, check out the price of Miss Melons fresh beans here, https://www.missmelons.com.au/products/beans.
[4] By the way, it was Homer not an American cowboy who first used this expression, Hold your horses—it was in book 23 of the Iliad.

[7] Bear in mind you don't compare your homegrown product against the cheapest produce available, but rather the freshest and best versions. When looking for crops to grow, probably best to focus on high nutrient and relatively high-cost foods.
[8] Said then President of the Canadian International Development Agency (Marcel Masse) in 1982, https://www.upi.com/Archives/1982/07/06/Women-do-two-thirds-of-the-worlds-working-hours-but/9167394776000/.
[9] Historically, women were (are) balancing out equity across communities and sharing useful information more widely.           For example, a homemaker learns that a neighbor needs to clean out their stables. Next, the homemaker’s life partner helps muck out the stables and, in return, they receive a free load of manure for their backyard homestead garden. This networking/socializing is crucial in a tax-free, bartering-based, local economy...
[10] Think woodworking is one of humanity’s older art forms and that traditional skillsets have been (mostly) developed in the time period covered by recorded history (around 10,000 years)? Not so. Read this article about a recent archaeological discovery in Zambia of a log platform or shelter constructed 476,000 years ago by stone-age people. Some type of hominid accomplished this feat including notching the logs to make a better fit/stronger structure, https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-66846772. The BBC article is based on a paper published in the Nature journal, Evidence for the earliest structural use of wood at least 476,000 years ago, https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-06557-9.
[11] Unfortunately, according to a CSIRO study, solar hot water does not produce the desired ROI.
[12] Apparently, paying off your car loan early is not important, probably because cars are, for the most part, a depreciating asset.
[13] Tree planting improves property values by about 6%, provides shade, cooling, and wind protection, as well as fresh air. Combining that with a food forest increases ROI further…
[14] Returns of about 40% for your roof, 20% for walls and 5% for floors.
[15] For example, refer to: Vertical Farming Has Found Its Fatal Flaw, https://www.wired.co.uk/article/vertical-farms-energy-crisis.
[16] Car/boat/RV (caravan)/truck manufacturers have been using this “charade” for a long time. Here’s how it works—their distributors/dealers/shops sell Jane and John a car/boat/RV/caravan/truck/piece of furniture/whatever for $5,000. There is also a separate coupon which promises them a 15% manufacturer’s rebate (ie, $750) later on… Now, Jane and John aren’t rich dudes, so they finance (say) 100% of their purchase with some kind of a buy-now-pay-later lender. The lender sees they paid $5,000 so they lend John and Jane $5,000. But the manufacturer subsequently snail mails a check/cheque to John and Jane or otherwise reimburses them for their coupon in the amount of $750. Presto magic, John and Jane have their new car/boat/RV/caravan/truck/piece of furniture/whatever plus they also have $750 in cash now. What’s interesting about this is that the $750 cash back is not considered income in the hands of John and Jane, so they don’t have to pay any personal income tax on it. For the manufacturer, it’s an allowable expense (reduction in their income) so it too lowers their overall tax burden. Of course, John and Jane are now on the hook for repayment of $5,000 plus interest. But most people, especially young people and entrepreneurs of any age, have very high personal future discount rates so cash-in-hand might look good compared with a future payment plan of some sort.

With a former colleague (Coby Bell) now his boss, a new partner (Lindsey Morgan) by his side, a family challenging him every step of the way, and suspicions about the circumstances surrounding the death of his wife (Genevieve Padalecki), there’s plenty to make Walker’s life complicated.
During this 1-on-1 phone interview with Collider, actor Jared Padalecki, who’s also an executive producer on the project, talked about the experience of starting a new TV series after spending 15 seasons on Supernatural, how the dynamic between the Walker brothers compares to that of the Winchester brothers, how special it is to work with his real-life wife, having Lindsey Morgan as his partner vs. Jensen Ackles, how involved he’s been with the show’s development, and that they’ll get Ackles to guest on the show at some point.
Collider: I must admit, it’s very strange to be talking to you about something other than Supernatural, when I figured I would just be talking to you about that until the end of time. Congratulations on Walker doing so well! Coming off of a show where you spent 15 seasons and starting a new show, when you don’t know what the audience will be or how the response will be, how does it feel to know that it’s got so many people tuning in already?
JARED PADALECKI: I still am grieving Supernatural. I really am. It was 15 and a half years. I met my wife on the show. I met my dear friend, and many dear friends. I really enjoyed Sam Winchester. So, I’m still grieving that process. We’ve developed Walker over the last two years, so I’ve had a chance to get to know the character and the show and figure out who this guy is and what the show is gonna be about. It’s been interesting. Ultimately, Supernatural was such a big part of my life. I’m 38, and that was 15 and a half years of my life. There’s no real way to calculate it, and I don’t think I’ll ever really grasp that or make sense of it. But I love, love, love the show I’m doing now. I love the character, I love the cast, I love our crew, and I love the stories we are setting out to tell. I hope Cordell Walker feels different than Sam Winchester. I’ve worked really hard to try to make sure that they’re different people. And I think Anna [Fricke] and her team have done a tremendous job and I’m really excited to explore this new world.
How different does it feel to go from the dynamic of the Winchester brothers to the Walker brothers, and play a big brother after playing a little brother for so long?
PADALECKI: Oh, yeah, it’s ridiculous. It’s like apples and oranges. I’ve been on TV, before Walker, for over 20 years. I’ve done almost 400 episodes of television and I had never played a father. So, to play a father and a widower, and to be a little brother and a law enforcement agent, it’s so many new horizons for me and it’s such a cool privilege that I get to do this and sleep at home. It’s amazing to sleep home, but it sucks to wake up at home because I have three, two-legged alarm clocks that just wanna come in and jump on dad’s head. They’re like, “Time to wake up, I want Lucky Charms! Time to wake up, I want Cheerios! Where’s my yogurt?” And I’m like, “Uh, I gotta go to work.” It’s a very different lifestyle, in many ways, and maybe it’s helping me film Walker because my life is very different today than it was even four months ago when we were finishing Supernatural in Vancouver.
What does it mean to you to get to work with your wife, Genevieve Padalecki, and to be able to share scenes together as part of this relationship that’s really the driving force for your character?
PADALECKI: She and I met on set. The first words we ever exchanged were on the set of Supernatural in Vancouver. She was a guest star who was gonna do a couple of episodes. She went to Tisch School at NYU, did theater and drama, and had her own TV show. She’s a wonderful actress and she’s a super hardworking A-type. I love seeing her in her element. Like so many women do, she put her passions on the backburner for many years, to make sure that she was there for the kids when I had to be out of the country shooting the rest of Supernatural. During these COVID times, you can’t bring friends and family to set because it’s against the rules, so I just also love that my fellow cast and crew gets to meet her and see her. I get to show her off, off screen and on screen, and I couldn’t be more proud. She brings such a light to Emily and to the set, off screen. I couldn’t be happier. It’s such a special moment. I read the script and we developed a show, with Anna and Dan Lin and Lindsey Liberatore at Rideback Studios. And then, funny enough, Gen and I were in Park City skiing last February, for our 10-year wedding anniversary, and I got a phone call from Anna. She was like, “Hey, I wanna talk about Gen.” And I was like, “Okay, I’m with her.” And she goes, “Does Gen wanna play Emily?” And I was like, “What?!” So, I told Gen, and now here we are, almost a year later, with six episodes in the can and I couldn’t be happier.
How are you also finding the experience of having a female partner on the show with Lindsey Morgan, as opposed to having Jensen Ackles as your partner?
PADALECKI: Well, she’s much better to look at than Jensen. She’s still shorter than I am, so I don’t have to break my neck looking up. I’m just kidding. I love Jensen. I feel like I could see him in 10 years, and we’d go right back into our on screen and off screen vibe. He and I have just spent so much time with each other, more time than with our wives, our kids, and other friends and family, so it’s so easy with Jensen. He’s a wonderful actor, obviously. We get each other. With Lindsey, she’s also just a wonderful person. She’s kind, she’s smart, she’s hardworking, she’s talented, she’s very passionate about her character and the role, and she takes it very seriously and does her research and her preparation. I really enjoy working with her. It’s certainly very different with my co-anchor, so to speak, being somebody who’s not related and a female, then with Supernatural, where he was related and an older brother. It’s also a dynamic that selfishly helps Walker be his own person. I’m not the little brother anymore. Now, I’m the senior Ranger in a duo. It gives me, Jared, an opportunity to explore different aspects of building a character. And Lindsey’s a sponge. She’s eager to learn, and eager to work hard and do a great job.
As a executive producer on the show, are you part of the conversations about what could happen in the future of the show, what you cover in Season 1, and how you lay the groundwork for Season 2?
PADALECKI: I’m part of far more conversations than I wanted to be. Frankly, Anna and her crew of fellow writers have fleshed this show out with phenomenal stories that I’m really proud of. The genesis of this show was me in my trailer, during Season 14 of Supernatural thinking about a story that I would like to watch, if I were gonna have the chance to watch TV. Before this show was ever even called Walker, I had an idea of a guy who was stuck between a rock and a hard place, who was bound by his own moral code, but also bound by his oath and his duty, and they didn’t always mesh. I’ve had a great time exploring it and I’m excited to continue getting to explore it, but it’s been a new world for me.
I certainly think you should put in a bid for having Jensen Ackles come on as a villain because I think it would be very fun to see you guys go up against each other, in that way.
PADALECKI: Your mouth to God’s ears. Count me in. We’ll get him on. We will share a screen together again.
What does your family think of Walker?
PADALECKI: It’s a great show. I’m really proud of it. Supernatural was funny because my kids couldn’t really watch it because dad is dying or dad is killing somebody or we’re cutting heads off or someone is getting their heart eaten. With Walker, I feel very comfortable saying to everybody on the planet, “Hey, you can watch this. You can watch this with your kids. You can watch this with your parents. You can watch this with your friends. It’s gonna be fun. It’s heartwarming. It’s a great show for anybody and everybody.
And I’m a sucker for anything with Mitch Pileggi in it, so thank you for that.
PADALECKI: Me too! I asked for him by name. Not a word of a lie.
Walker airs on Thursday nights on The CW.
