We no longer need to hold back
Summary
As Crowley enthusiastically recounts one of his sessions at the planetarium, he is amused to see that Aziraphale isn't listening at all and is staring at his lips.

"I have to admit, Angel, even after all these years, humans still manage to surprise me. This afternoon in the planetarium, there was a little boy who couldn't have been more than five years old, and he knew an incredible amount about stars and planets, especially Alpha Centauri! Can you believe it, Alpha Centauri, Angel!"
Crowley was telling the story of his last session in the planetarium, but it didn't take him long to notice that Aziraphale was behaving strangely. Usually when Crowley talked about his 'job', he was all ears, commenting, reacting to the demon's story, but today the angel looked completely distracted, his eyes constantly lingering on the demon's lips.
Crowley had decided to ignore him for a while and had gone on with his story, pretending not to notice.
"You know the planet where his royal smugness and my ex-boss are having their honeymoon."
This time, when he saw that Aziraphale didn't react, he asked, "Angel! Are you listening to me?"
The angel gasped in surprise, then pulled himself together and quickly replied, "Of course I'm listening to you, my dear, you know very well I hang on your every word."
Crowley turned fully to face him and said with amusement, "I rather got the impression that you were more interested in my lips than the words that came out of them."
The Angel blushed slightly and began to stammer, trying to find an explanation.
"Um... I... actually..."
As the angel searched for words, the demon brought his face close and planted a light, quick kiss on the angel's lips, then pulled away before asking cheekily, "Now that I have your undivided attention, do you think..."
He didn't have time to finish his sentence because Aziraphale had cupped his face in his hands and whispered against his lips, "You absolutely have my undivided attention. "
Then he captured the demon's lips in a kiss that was neither light nor quick. He kissed Crowley like someone who had been deprived of food for days and was finally getting his fill. Crowley, though initially surprised by the angel's eagerness, was not to be outdone and wrapped his arms around the angel's neck, returning the kiss with the same passion.
Much later, when they parted to catch their breath, Crowley asked him softly, panting, "Although I find this extremely pleasurable, will you explain to me what was going through your mind, Angel?"
Aziraphale, looking embarrassed, lowered his head and mumbled something unintelligible.
The demon grabbed the angel's chin and lifted it as he said gently, "Angel, I didn't understand, you'll have to say it again."
Aziraphale sighed before saying, "It's because of Nina."
Crowley raised an eyebrow.
"Nina?"
"Yes, she told me she preferred it when we were pining for each other, because now we're so glued to each other that she doesn't dare come to the bookshop for fear of running into us kissing between the shelves. It seems Muriel has been talking a bit too much."
Crowley couldn't help but chuckle, but Aziraphale shook his head, "It's not funny, Crowley."
"I think it's pretty funny, actually, but it still doesn't tell me why you were so fixated on my lips that you wouldn't listen to me."
Aziraphale, still a little embarrassed, said, "Well, when you forbid yourself something, it's usually the thing you want most. It's all you can think about. That was the case with... with your lips."
Crowley laughed softly and replied, "At least you see how I've felt all these millennia..."
Aziraphale immediately replied, "You're not the only one who's felt that way, I'll have you know!"
Crowley's expression became serious again as he brushed Aziraphale's hair back, his hand lingering on the angel's cheek. He said softly, "All the more reason why we shouldn't hold back another minute. No matter what others say."
Aziraphale thought for a moment before nodding.
"You're right, I'm sorry, that was really silly."
Crowley shook his head and replied, "No, not silly, just a little too self aware, and then I admit it was cute to see you distracted like that."
Aziraphale replied, "It's all right now, you can get on with your session at the planetarium."
Crowley shook his head again and, moving his face closer to the angel's, replied, "I don't feel like it now, I've found a much more interesting activity."
He closed the distance between them and pressed his lips to the angel's for another kiss, Alpha Centauri and the planetarium far from their minds as it lingered.
"Aziraphale! Crowley! Are you in there? I think so if the door is open!"
Both startled, they separated at Nina's voice and both stood up, quickly putting their clothes back in order before going to meet her.
The owner of the coffee shop wasn't fooled though, and pointing to the coffees and cakes in her hands she exclaimed, "I thought I'd come to make amends because Maggie pointed out that I'd been insensitive earlier, but it turns out I was right!"
Crowley put his arm around Aziraphale's neck and cheekily replied, "Do you have a problem with that? If you're jealous, do the same with Maggie!"
"Idiot, that's called self-control."
Crowley replied, "When you've held back as long as we have, we'll talk again about self-control."
Then, ignoring Nina, he pressed his lips to Aziraphale's for another kiss.
Nina, surprised that for once she hadn't had the last word, placed the coffees and cakes on a piece of furniture, then turned on her heels and gently closed the door behind her as the angel and the demon continued to kiss.
One thing was for sure: life on Whickber Street had never been dull since these two had been together.

song/ship analyses part 9: aziracrow and "goodbye, my danish sweetheart" by mitski
MITSKI TIME MOTHERFUCKERS!! this one will have a lot of like theorizing adjacent stuff
“There's nobody better than you
It took me a while 'til I knew” despite being a demon crowley has better morals than most angels ngl, but azi would be blinded by the fact that he’s a DEMON and probably didn’t realize that fact until the apocawasn’t happened
“But you knew from the start it was us, didn't you?” crowley was in love with azi from the start and he knew it, too. azi was also probably in love with crowley from the start, but he didn’t realize it until 1941. he probably realized crowley had known all along during the s2 finale
“Now I lay as I study a blank wall
Would you spare me your voice if I call?” aziraphale is probably drowning in guilt in heaven, constantly thinking about crowley and how he wants to go back to earth, but he ALSO knows (thinks) that crowley would be livid with him and it scares him
“'Cause you waited and watered my heart 'til it grew” crowley waited the whole time for azi to get to a place where he was comfortable, i firmly believe crowley knew the entire time azi loved him back, he was just waiting for azi to realize it as well, and he just never knew that he already had realized it.
“So, I don't blame you
If you want to bury me in your memory” well this one’s pretty self-explanatory no? azi knows (thinks) crowley would be furious at him and he understands why
“I'm not the girl I ought to be, but” i always interpret this line as “i’m not the angel i ought to be” and well that’s pretty self-explanatory too. azi has never been a perfect angel, and maybe he thinks if he was he wouldn’t be in so much pain
“You can tell them what you saw in me
And not how I turned out to be” azi’s first impression on crowley was that he was an angel that cared so much about humanity he’d go against god’s orders for them. but as they’ve gotten to know each other, crowley’s also learned that azi is selfish. he almost gets discorporated because he wants crepes, he gets convinced to thwart armageddon because crowley brings up his books and restaurants. but he still wants crowley to remember him with the best parts of him, the parts that were in some little part selfless. he wants crowley to have good memories of him, even though he doesn’t (HE DOES) deserve it.
“There's some kind of burning inside me” this is wild wild theorizing but i think azi should’ve fallen by now, crowley was thrown out just for asking questions which azi has done many many times. but maybe god is biding her time, giving him a different punishment? maybe he’ll fall very, very slowly, he won’t even notice
“It's kept me from falling apart
And I'm sure that you've seen what it's done to my heart
But it's kept me from falling apart” and maybe azi knows this too, but he thinks it’s just crowley rubbing off on him, but he loves crowley, so why would he care?
“Now here I lay as I wonder about you
Would you just tell me what I'm meant to do?” remember he wanted crowley to lead with him. crowley and azi have always been a team, so leading by himself must be so stressful, and he def wishes he could just turn and ask crowley what he thinks they should do, before he remembers he didn’t come.
“'Cause I've waited and watered my heart 'til it grew
You can see how it's blossomed for you” in azi’s perspective, he was offering crowley comfort and safety. and crowley rejected that. i won’t pretend to know how azi took that, but he’s def hurt and feels betrayed. what happened to running away to alpha centauri? is this not the same? he took a risk, he asked crowley to run away with him just like crowley had many times before, so why would he reject him?
“You can tell them what you saw in me
And not the way I am” azi wants to be seen as good and heavenly and a pure angel even though he’s not, at least to most people. he didn’t care with crowley but he wishes he’ll at least keep up his good nice angel reputation (he probably will even though he’s heartbroken)
“You can tell them what you saw in me
And not the way I used to be” but maybe, just maybe, azi wants to be remembered as human. purely, unabashedly, human, with his flaws and his strengths, not as if he was some pure angelic force. he tells himself he wants to be a pure good nice angel and that’s why he wants crowley to tell people such. he wants to pretend he’s just the same as before he met crowley, but he’s not. and maybe he likes that. maybe he wants to be human. he wants to be flawed yet still good. but he isn’t. (he is.)
“'Cause there is nobody better than you” crowley is. (so is aziraphale.)

I mean this in a gen way, but saying Crowley avoids responsibility feels incredibly unfair, bc as far as I can recall, of the two he's actually the only one who has ever apologized for anything?
hi anon!!!✨ more than happy to explain (as best i can, anyway) where im coming from on this!!!✨
so to my recollection, crowley has essentially said he's sorry twice in show canon; s1, when he tries again to get aziraphale to leg it with him, and s2, with the dance. however, imo, i think it's questionable as to how much he means either of these.
s1 apology to me is worded in such a way that, at worst crowley is purposefully inauthentic in his apology, and at best, just simply doesn't know what he's apologising for - but in both cases just wants to get aziraphale on side so they can escape the apocalypse by fleeing to alpha centauri:
Tumblr media
the key part here for me is, "whatever i said, i didn't mean it...", because to me that feels an awful lot along the lines of 'im sorry you feel that way', rather than accepting responsibility that what one may have said may have caused the upset.
now look, i realise crowley is under a lot of pressure in this scene - he's come straight from being directly threatened by hastur, and that makes the rushed, poorly worded apology understandable - but id personally argue that, regardless, it's not a genuine apology. the argument itself isn't brought up again, it isn't discussed, and it isn't resolved. (once again, the plot doesn't really allow for a heart-to-heart to occur, but i doubt it was ever addressed in the interim between s1 and s2. that being said, i can only go based on what we're actually shown, as opposed to any supposition of what did or did not happen/was or was not discussed in the missing four years!)
as for the apology dance; i think it's fair to summarise that crowley walks off, out of the bookshop, believing that he's fully in the right. he might later regret how the whole argument went down, but with the context of gabriel's words from s1 in mind, it's fair that crowley would consider that he doesn't have anything to apologise for. arguably, neither of them have anything to apologise for (from aziraphale's perspective, he's also in the right - essentially, the argument isn't as black and white as that!), but when crowley then learns of the BOL threat, it's then that he comes back to the bookshop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
again, look - im perfectly prepared to accept this entire exchange, the wording within it, as one big shared idiosyncrasy, and one that works for them. but there's a couple of things that make this not quite ring true to me.
the way crowley says the first line, offering an apology, suggests that if he were to say sorry, he wouldn't mean it. says it in a way that's very guarded, but also seems snooty and lofty, like he's above the act - and that it would be a reluctantly-given gesture
when aziraphale states that that's in fact what he wants, an apology, crowley doesn't actually say sorry. he admits that aziraphale was right - but that doesn't take accountability for his part in the spat, and even then he says it again like it pains him to say the words
there was a marvellous meta (by @esthermitchell-author!!!) that summed it up, that i'll link back when i get my hands on it, but the way that aziraphale says 'with the little dance' suggest that the dance is additional to an actual apology, that they're not one and the same. now, i personally see the dance's meaning a little differently - maybe? - that the dance is the thing to break the tension (ridiculous concept altogether but that's another post). in that context, crowley only does the dance, not the apology. that being said, aziraphale seems to accept the dance as the apology, so maybe that's that and nothing more to be said
ive said it before, but the way aziraphale rattles off the years where he's done it, and crowley immediately says that he 'doesnt do the dance', suggest to me - and pure speculation here, admittedly - that aziraphale has historically been the one to always apologise. we could see this as aziraphale having always been the one that's in the wrong... but i somehow doubt that to be the case. instead, it seems to be that aziraphale is pissed that he's always been the one to bend, to apologise, to keep the peace, to break the tension, and this time crowley can 'bloody well do it'. the way aziraphale performatively straightens his clothes and cocks his head suggests that crowley doing the dance is a novelty, and he's going to savour it... but i digress-
all of this to me feels that crowley, again, is dancing around accepting any accountability or responsibility for his part in the argument, and therefore the apology - if we conclude that aziraphale does accept the dance itself as an apology - isn't completely meant. take into account the context of why crowley flies back to the bookshop, it can also be seen that crowley will do whatever he needs to ensure that he can help aziraphale shelter/hide gabriel, and therefore protect aziraphale in the process; a means to an end, essentially.
(now of course anon, if there is an apology ive missed or something i haven't taken into account, please come back to me - these are just the two instances that i can recall off the top of my head, and my personal interpretation of them!!! but im always open to thinking about things differently).
there are also other instances where he's... rather poor at accepting his own accountability, but tbh it's LWA that's analysed and summarised this better than i ever could, so definitely worth having a root around in those asks too, for some extra reading!!! (link in my masterpost)✨

Dinner Is Not Over
Part 7
Boy, you're hindering apart, and I wanna multiply
—“Sure sir” said Muriel with a happy voice that accompanied a happier face Crowley was at a loss of words, he wanted, no, needed Muriel to give him an exit, the key to end his suffering once and for all, of course he couldn't pronounce the right words, whatever he said would be wrong, asking for it straight away would be suspicious, Muriel was naive not stupid, they would put two and two together and the last chance the demon had at resting would be gone, a lie could probably come in hand, but would Muriel believe it? He could use the same excuse that they gave Aziraphale so many years ago, there was no reason for Muriel to not believe on him, so she settled for that.
—"you are awfully quiet mister Crowley" said Muriel, breaking the long silence
—"yes I'm sorry kid, it's just, hell has been really pressuring me into becoming the new duke there, but I really don't want to go, I have my life here, and I really like it"
—"so? Just don't go"
—"If it only was that easy, I helped Beelzebub by suggesting the idea that both they and Gabriel should run away to Alpha Centauri, hell saw it as if I had done good, and truly a demon can get into a lot of trouble for doing good, the only way hell could possibly forgive me would be by becoming duke, but even then I don't think they'll completely forget about it, besides I really like it here, it's so cramped downstairs"
—"and in which way could I help you, do you need support?"
—"this happened before, although not exactly like this, a long time ago hell came after me for saving a girl's life, I got what I deserved, and then they returned me back here if I’m honest to you, I was afraid I still am and probably still be for years to come, the only thing helping me was knowing that i-"
—"I’m not giving you holy water" Muriel shouted interrupting Crowley
—"how did you- I already explained it, please" said the demon falling to his knees, begging once more for the unattainable mercy
—"you could hurt yourself" Muriel didn't have any argument, but they knew that what Crowley was doing, or planning to, was wrong, however if hell really was after him, giving her a weapon to protect herself didn't seem out of place, if they caught him then he would suffer more
—"I won't be able to do that if hell gets a hold of me first right? If Aziraphale was here would help me, don't you want to help me"
—"yes I know he would but-" a little bell rang stopping Muriel from finishing his argument “Oh I’m sorry, but I really have to attend that, I’ll be with you in a second okay, make yourself comfortable” with every word the voice drifted more and more away, pleased with a new person looking to buy a book.
Crowley was still looking in awe to all the changes, pacing himself in the new version of his old place, until they found a chair that looked comfortable enough and decided to lay there for a while, thinking and awaiting Muriel's return, sometime passed, and the sun started moving, revealing a new hidden addition, instead of the old wood floors there was now perforated metal floor on the second level, however instead of the usual little circular holes there were tiny little stars that reflected all over the bookshop once the sun was in the right position, painting a big galaxy, Crowley was amused by this, the chair had proof to be comfortable enough, and with a simple miracle the lights had dimmed out, this wasn't bad, not bad at all, this was the first time on the past days that the demon hadn't felt badly, a few moments later Muriel returned happier than how they left.
—"did you sell it?" said Crowley
—"I did!!!, in fact I sold 3 of them" squeaked Muriel happily
—"amazing job" Crowley replied proudly
— "big fan of the stars by the way"
—"oh well of course you liked them, they were inspired by you"
—"were they?"
—"yeah, again I really learned a lot of stuff from those letters that Aziraphale wrote to his friend"
—"what friend?" it was intended to come out as curious, but the words were lingered with a jealous tone
—"diary, you should take a look" said Muriel while looking for them, three volumes stacked one on top of each other, "these are the first ones, you might like them, after all, every time you appear something exciting happens"
Crowley miracled a little table so that the books wouldn't stand on the floor and quickly prepared himself to read whatever this proved to be.
There it was, another reminder of his angel, this probably being the last one, so either for torture or for closure Crowley make himself comfortable again and began reading the memoir of his one true love, with stars surrounding him, somehow getting back the only things he ever loved, and we're taken away from him, in a new changed way.
The book contained every event worth telling in Aziraphale’s life, meaning every time he had reunited with Crowley in the last 6000 years, and a mismatched bundle of his other accomplishments, like a guide on how he bought the library, a very proudly passage expressing how he passed his driving test, and a list of pros and cons of owning a firearm.
All these events were narrated in a way that made Crowley doubt himself, the core of the facts remain the same, but the details changed drastically, the demon was now able to see through the angel eyes, small details that for him did not mean anything were whole pages in there, cruelty and misfortune bloomed into acts of hope and resilience as Azi wrote, it was truly breathtaking to read the way in which the angel thought, this made Crowley miss him in an inhuman way.
Hanging onto those pages as if they were the angel itself, the desperate way in which he was holding an insignificant piece of paper demonstrated that he wanted to touch something else, that he was starved from it, he needed it, he was careful with it of course, it was a strong cautious grip, he kept holding them for a while, with the hope that maybe if he held them hard enough those texts would morph into the being that wrote them, he spent there several minutes, or maybe hours, he didn't care, and as he spent more and more time holding them she noticed that his scent was still there, very faint and almost odorless but still there, he could have stay there for weeks hugging this new treasure and smelling the angels barely noticeable scent until something called his attention, next to the other two books a small crystal bottle filled with a clear liquid seemed to appear out of nowhere.

An analysis of Aziraphale's Choice
Oh hi! Don’t mind me, doing an analysis of the most over analysed sequence in the fandom. Spoilers ahead. But yeah, you got it, I’m going to talk about Aziraphale’s decision to go to Heaven.
First and foremost, I reject the “adulterated coffee theory”. I believe Aziraphale’s decision was very much his own. The coffee was important, yes, but for a different reason. Gabriel and the other angels (even Muriel!) rejected consuming “gross matter”, all of them, even demons (like when Shax mocks him for consuming food), showed aversion to it. So when the Metatron shows up offering coffee this already sets him as “not like the other angels”. The Metatron is trying to make Aziraphale believe that they respect his earthly ways, that they maybe even admire the connection they have to earth as the manipulative ass they are.
Now, let’s throw into the mix Aziraphale’s self-esteem problems: shortly put, he believes he is not good enough. Not Good enough as in he complies too much with “the bad side”, he lies to his superiors. Not good enough because he is not what Gabriel’s Heaven sees as a perfect angel: he eats, drinks (“You’re drinking wine? But that’s the source of drunkenness!”), he is attached to humans, to earth and to material objects, and most important of all, he loves a demon. He believes he’s “not angel enough”, he was expecting to fall in Job’s episode, he doesn’t believe he is up to the standards of what an angel should be and he spends the rest of his existence trying to compensate for that.
In their conversation the Metatron says “There are huge plans afoot, enormous projects, and I will need you to run them. You are just the angel for the job.”, here they are taking advantage of  Aziraphale’s insecurities to boost him up, they are the first of the heavenly bosses that treat him like he is worth anything, like he did things right. To him it’s the first time his morals are ever being valued, it’s the first time ever since giving away his sword that he feels like he is enough for Heaven. When listing his qualities the Metatron says things they know Aziraphale values: “You’re a leader, you’re honest, you don’t just tell people what they want to hear.” he believes in kind selfless leadership, he values honesty (despite learning with a certain demon how/when to lie)... the Metatron is painting a picture of Aziraphale that is very flattering for him to hear and the only person who ever came close to doing the same is Crowley.
A note here, I see, as a lot of people pointed out, Nina’s toxic relationship as a parallel to Aziraphale’s relationship with Heaven. As Crowley says “We don’t need Heaven and Hell, they’re toxic!”, he came to terms with how bad both institutions are, but Aziraphale didn't. Remember after Nina and Maggie got stuck in the coffee shop Nina received a lot of backlash from her partner and was discounting it on Maggie? Same thing with the two immortal beings. In the first season Heaven shows up more often than they usually do because of the apocalypse and we can see how nervous Aziraphale gets, he is being constantly watched, his actions are under scrutiny. The bandstand fight was after Aziraphale had been to Heaven to tell them about the antichrist and was quickly shut down. Gabriel shows up running at the park and the next scene we have of A/C together is when he refuses to run away with Crowley to Alpha Centauri. Heaven shows up, Aziraphale gets into a sort of relapse mode and they fight. He hasn’t really worked on his trauma in season 2, he was just ignoring them hoping he would never have to face them again.
In these circumstances, when Aziraphale is being confronted by heaven, he sees the love he has for Crowley not as a virtue, but as a fault. I mean, he  fell in love with a demon! How can an angel love someone who is supposed to be evil? That is not angelic, he should only love things of pure love and light. In those moments he forgets all about Crowley’s good deeds, they become small, in a way, because the bad deeds (his and Crowley’s) weigh heavier on Aziraphale’s moral scale when he’s in crisis. His relapse is seeing everything back in black and white. If everything that comes from Hell is bad, how can he love a being that is bad? When he is seeing everything in black and white his love for Crowley becomes a fault. That’s one of the many reasons he sees Crowley being restored as an angel the best option to ever happen, because, then, he would be loving a being of light and all his moral problems would be solved.
But things aren’t black and white, and Aziraphale is aware of that most of the time (specially after the gravedigging story, I think that was a turning point for him). Crowley can be incredibly kind, as he himself points out. When he starts seeing himself as “an angel who goes along with heaven as far as he can” is when the foundations to “their own side” are laid. Later on he realises his moral is more similar to Crowley’s than heaven’s, but it’s still so hard for him to admit it because there’s a little voice on the back of his mind saying that only bad things come from Hell and that it is wrong to question Heaven’s decisions. Then, we get to a point that he seems to have accepted that despite everything he loves Crowley. This means that Heaven isn’t the source of all good things as they want angels to believe. Humanity teaches him that, too. In the present he trusts Crowley with his existence, he cares about that demon more than anything else and he believes it can be reciprocal. We are at a point where Aziraphale knows Crowley’s presence grounds him, that he wants him near and he stopped fighting against wanting that, he made peace with his feelings for Crowley.
Back with the Metatron, they know Aziraphale won’t consider any proposals from Heaven if they don’t consider Crowley into the equation. They pretty much acknowledges that by saying “I’ve been looking back over a number of your… previous exploits and I see in quite a few of them you formed a de facto partnership with the demon Crowley.”, it’s only after the Metatron offers to restore Crowley to “full angelic status” that Aziraphale begins to actually listen. But I think they knew Crowley would say no, his comments about Crowley’s choice make me believe that. They say “Ah, well, always did want to go his own way.”, subtly trying to make him believe that he had been fully rejected, that not going to heaven equals not loving Aziraphale. Which is actually the most absurd thing they can say about Crowley, because he’s spent both seasons talking about “our own side”, saying they should run away together. Going back to Heaven is the only thing he won’t do, and good for you Crowley for establishing your boundaries. Then the Metatron adds “Always asking damn fool questions, too.”, showing that Croweley’s questions actually bothered him, that is undesirable having someone asking as many questions as he did,  they prefer Crowley not going to Heaven.
Actually, this was such a crazy proposal. For one, it weakens the consequences of going against Heaven for all the other angels. Sure, you ask questions, criticise, you become a demon, but if you’re good enough, or maybe you have the right contact, then you can be restored back again. Heaven rules under the threat of sending the divergents to Hell, making the angels fear and loathe the other side is how they keep the status quo standing. You’d have the serpent of Eden around your angels, the expert in temptations. It doesn’t sound like a good deal for them. So, this is why offering to make Crowley an angel was just a way to make Aziraphale believe they were truly considering making accommodations for the pair of them, that they were willing to change how things are done. This is another smart way to pull them apart, because now Crowley will be the one saying no to Aziraphale, he’s the one denying him this. He is made to be the one pulling them apart, just like the Metatron says he always does. The Metatron meticulously pulled them apart.
I believe Aziraphale chose to go to Heaven to change it, it makes sense for him, but I also believe that Gabriel and Beelzebub’s arc played an important role here. If Aziraphale doesn’t accept the position, then who’s gonna be the boss? Michael? That angel who threatened to erase anybody who helped Gabriel from the Book of Life. That’s not just thrown in there for nothing. Can you imagine the fear of having the existence of someone who brightens up your day erased, never to be remembered? And the other way around, how lonely Crowley would be without Aziraphale. It’s better to have their past memories for themselves than no memories at all. Aaaaand, Hell also threatened to pursue Beelzebub, former Lord of Hell. Why wouldn’t they go after Crowley too? In this point here, Aziraphale is absolutely right, how are they going to spend the rest of their existence running away? Better to go up and fix things. But it’s naive of him to believe he can fix everything with good intentions and a kind heart (which is very in character for him).
Sure, there are some rotten angels in heaven, but The Voice of God said things went wrong and wanted everything different, so it must mean The Almighty is good after all. But here he chooses to forget Job’s story. God was betting with Satan, letting children get murdered. God is not the version of good Aziraphale imagines them to be, and I think the only way for him to confront this is to be up close with the rottenness of Heaven. If the flood didn’t do it for him, nor Job’s ordeal this is probably the only way to get him out of denial.
Crowley, on the other hand, learned all that with the fall, so it’s frustrating to him to see Aziraphale choosing Heaven over, and over and getting his spirit crushed when things were not the way he expected them to be, despite Crowley telling him so. They both know Aziraphale still has hopes about the Almighty’s goodness, but Crowley gets hurt the hardest when he thinks Aziraphale sees him as broken, that maybe Crowley was a “project” of his to fix all along, that he was trying to improve a demon. What hurt him so badly was not attributing Crowley’s goodness to his morals, but something that happens despite his demonic essence maybe due to his time around humans and Aziraphale himself.
Now I’m going to speculate more than analyse: I don’t think the Metatron considered the possibility of Aziraphale being against the Second Coming. They don’t take into account Aziraphale’s love for humanity, they don’t understand the concept of caring so deeply about beings with such tiny lifespans, just like the Archangels. I don’t think they can conceive the idea of caring for humans individually, of not seeing them as means to an end (to triumph over Hell).
I don’t think Aziraphale was directly threatened by the Metatron during their conversation. I’ve seen somebody here making a very good point that maybe the conversation of Aziraphale and the Metatron we see might not be flashbacks at all, but him constructing a narrative of what happened to protect Crowley from some threat. I agree that’s a possibility, but I don’t see it as the most likely one because of Aziraphale’s joy when telling Crowley about the possibility of having him restored as an angel. But I might be wrong. We have to ✨wait and see✨.
Then, working from the point of view that the Metatron manipulated Aziraphale thinking he is naive, they probably also think that Aziraphale averted the war because he thought he was doing the right thing for Heaven, not to save the silly little humans nor to stay with the demon he loves. In this interpretation, he can be seen as a naive angel who loves and cares way too much, way too pliable to avoid falling prey to a demon. Even Shax thinks that, she called him Crowley’s pet. They are wrong, of course.
So maybe… big maybe here, they don’t actually see it coming when Aziraphale starts to thwart Heaven’s plans for the Second Coming, thinking he would be way too soft to stand against Heaven on his own (because now he doesn’t have Crowley by his side). He will have to make a plan of his own, he will have to be the one to convince Crowley to join forces, and, until then, it was always the other way around. There won’t be any space for indecision, Aziraphale will have to choose a side he won’t be able to back from later. After averting the Second Coming from the inside he won’t be trusted by Heaven anymore. And I think his hopes of doing good in Heaven will be shattered really early on.

Ineffable Advent, Day 5: Memories of Fire
Finally, a bit of angst for @drawlight 's holiday challenge! I was starting to make myself ill with all the fluff. But don't worry; it's Christmas, so it's still fluffy.
Aziraphale sat in his armchair by the fire while Crowley lounged on the floor beside him, leaning his back against the chair. The fire was crackling merrily, throwing warm light against the strings of cranberries that draped along the mantlepiece. Aziraphale reflected that this was as perfect an evening as he could ever wish for.
However, just as he was about to say as much, Crowley leaned his head back against the arm of the chair, and Aziraphale saw that his face was tense and shadowed.
"Crowley, my dear, what is it?" he said, leaning forward slightly.
Crowley flinched, startled by the sound, and then sighed. "It's the fire," he mumbled. "'S bringing up memories."
Aziraphale's heart sank. "Memories of... of the fall?" he asked carefully.
"Oh, that." Crowley laughed mirthlessly. "I hardly ever think of that any more. No, more recent than that."
"Tell me," Aziraphale prompted him gently.
Crowley was silent for a moment, and then took a deep breath. "There was that day in your bookshop, for starters." He tried to keep his voice gruff, but it wobbled slightly as he continued. "Really thought I'd lost you, that time."
"But you hadn't," Aziraphale said quickly. "Of course you hadn't." After a pause, he added, "I've never asked you... Why did you come back? After the way I treated you, why didn't you just go to Alpha Centauri like you said you would?"
Crowley shrugged. "Wouldn't have been any point, would there? Not if you weren't there too. Wanted to give it one last try."
Aziraphale's throat swelled with love and tears, and he swallowed hard. He learned more about forgiveness in one day with this demon than he had in centuries with Heaven. "You know," he managed to say, "I believe that day was when I truly chose my side. When I chose this world, and you, over what I'd always been told was right. So it should be a good memory, really."
"Mmm." Crowley smiled slightly, but his face remained shadowed.
"Is there something else it reminds you of?" Aziraphale asked.
Crowley hesitated. "Hellfire," he said finally. "Later, up in Heaven, when they thought I was you."
"Yes," Aziraphale nodded. "Yes, that was a bit frightening, that day. There were so many ways it could have gone wrong. But it didn't, you know. We fooled them, Heaven and Hell both. We got them to leave us alone. So in a way, that ought to be the best memory of all."
He giggled suddenly. "I wish you could have seen Hell's faces, I really do. And Michael's when I asked for that duck."
Crowley thought of Heaven's faces as they had looked at him that day; of the sadistic pleasure with which Gabriel had sent him into the fire. His jaw clenched and he curled his fists, rage boiling up in him again at the memory of how they had treated the creature they thought was Aziraphale. His Aziraphale, his bright, beautiful angel, who deserved every good thing this universe had to offer. They had treated him like he was nothing, like he was dirt beneath their shoes.
He knew he would never tell Aziraphale that part of the story, wouldn't destroy the last of Aziraphale's illusions; that there was still some good left in the system God had tried to create. That Heaven wasn't, in its own way, just as fallen as Hell.
Aziraphale reached out and stroked Crowley's hair, combing his fingers through bright red locks, longer now than they had been in years. "We can put the fire out, if you like," he offered. "I don't mind, if it upsets you."
Crowley stirred and stretched. "'S all right, angel. Leave it." He settled back, resting against Aziraphale's legs. "I'd rather build new memories of the fire here. With you."
