HS^2/Epilogues accidentally did Ult Dirk kind of right.

This is gonna be a long one.

So I figure I will make this, whether it gets shared around or not. I need to get it out of my system and on Tumblr.

Lets look at what an Ultimate self is, in essence.

An Ultimate self is not the combination of every possible version of a person. So humanstuck Dirks aren’t going to be part of the Ultimate Dirk we are seeing in the comic.

An Ultimate self is the combination of every possible version of a person in a certain universe. Ultimate Dirk is both a special case due to how Homestuck had 4 universes linked together, but also because of how his aspect includes all splinters of himself. For normal Ultimate selves I will use Rose and Dave rather than Dirk.

You have a start point, the origin point of the alpha timeline you could say, and every moment there are new branches of timelines and possibilities. From there, you have successful timelines and doomed timeline. An ultimate self will combine all of these. All version of Dave will include all timelines from that base universe. Rose as well, all versions from that base universe.

Perhaps there are timelines that diverge from the alpha with, say, a less abusive Bro, or a non alcoholic Mom Lalonde. It will also include timelines that maybe Rose was alcoholic before the game began, or even one’s where Dave may have had an even worse childhood. They all are diverging timelines from the same base. So Davebot and Rosebot both have all of those possible timelines in their heads and memories.

Luckily due to their non organic makeup, it is easier for them to sort through all of it, without the biological aspect of emotions to get in the way. If they did have biological bodies, I have no doubt the process would leave them split and having very intense internal struggles. I know Dave’s who diverged from canon because they went apeshit and killed Bro. Davebot has those timelines in his head supposedly.

It is a internal war of all kinds of morals and stand points. Most Dave’s are pretty straightforward, but there are too many possibilities.

The same can be said of Rose.

However, if we look at Dirk, he is a special case.

I am not going to diagnose Dirk any mental ilnesses. But I will pull from both people I know and my own research/experience.

Ultimate Dirk is the combination of not only all of his possible timelines from the base alpha timeline, but also all of his Splinters. One such splinter affects one of his main Splinters, and leads to severe issues.

I am talking about Lil Cal. Yes, he counts as a splinter. ARquiusprite, Caliborn, and a portion of Gamzee were all put into the Lil Cal puppet. And considering how Caliborn has experience eating the soul/dominating the soul of others who inhabit the same body, I have no doubt he did as such in Lil Cal. But it was a mix then. And Lil Cal went on to affect Bro, manipulating his mind and making him even more fucked up. Instilling extremely Toxic Masculinity, Misogynistic behavior, etc into Bro over the years. Caliborn’s influence is big here, considering his own misogyny and toxic masculinity ideology.

Therefore, all Bro’s that were affected by Lil Cal are included in Ult Dirk, but so are all those Lil Cals.

So now we have an idea as to why he may behave so… well. Shitily. It isn’t an excuse, but a possible explanation. His behavior is vile. So now we look at Dirk in canon that we have seen.

Dirk was so lonely he created a copy of his own mind, and it just spat his deepest fears in his face. I think Hal actually had a hand in Dirk’s self loathing, what with “being the same person.” Dirk already hates himself, and he hates his splinters as well. But he doesn’t hate himself for “internalized homophobia”. Nope. He is very accepting of who he is, and accepts it. The only thing is, he knows who he is and accepts it, and he hates who he is. Or rather who he sees himself as.

So you put someone who hates himself, and combine him with all of his worse selves who also have a core of self loathing, and you get someone who truly loathes himself, and has an internal battle, with biology adding onto it, against himself. Because for all the bad versions, there are just as many good ones. But part of Dirk is self loathing. It’s almost at the core of who he is. Not to say he can’t heal and grow, I know he can.

But we know Dirk wants the best for his friends, his idea of how to give that to them is somewhat flawed already when he is a kid, and he trie to move past it as an adult, but a lot of who he is is the puppet master.

I believe the Homestuck^2 and Epilogue writers didn’t fully grasp this, in fact I think they accidentally portrayed him somewhat correct. Ultimate Dirk is an idiot who makes himself the bad guy to ensure his friends have a chance to be happy. Yes, he treated Jake and the others horribly. No doubt. That’s where they were wrong with him. See, it should be about a 50/50 balance of “bad” and “good”. He would still have left Jake, but perhaps a bit softer, with the idea of protecting everyone from who he is now. Because Dirk is fucking stupid and like that™.

But yes, he is a piece of fucking shit in the epilogues and HS^2, so they fucked up there. But they kind of accidentally showed him properly. Ultimate selves are also really fucking messy.

Pretty sure Hussie also just wanted another way to go further than God Tier too. So. Meh.

If you read all of this, thanks. I know it’s somewhat scattered, but I have a lot of thoughts on it as a whole. Not to mention that as someone who struggles with a God Complex, and with friends who suffer from Bipolar, BPD, and others who identify really strongly with Dirk and Ult Dirk, he just both frustrates me because I know he isn’t quite right, and also validates how I feel. But I have the brain to not go apeshit like him.

Hi, I'm a John Egbert kin from Homestuck and I guess I'm non-canon, although timeline shenanigans make all of us canon in some form. My timeline did not have the epilogues or HS2, because we stopped them from happening. I was dating a Dirk (eventually got married to him as well) and we worked together to fix things, everyone defeated Calliope and Caliborn/Lord English and took control of our timelines.

Timelines are hard to explain, but I was supposed to end up as Candy!John and Dirk was supposed to be Meat!Dirk or Ult, but we met by pure accident and we stopped the epilogues from happening.

I'm looking for Dirk primarily, but if you do remember trying to stop the epilogues and defeating Calliope and Caliborn, still interact. I will absolutely message you if you do. It would be nice to talk to Roxy, Rose, Dave or anyone else too.

I'm 23, so please don't interact if you're a minor.

I guess as hard as it is to be a rosemary stan right now (which I am), it kinda helps to have a little perspective. Not by remembering it's just a comic, obviously that option is off the table. What I mean is that it sucks that rosemary is on the rocks in one timeline and separated in the other, but as much as I'm bitter that davekat is perfectly fine and healthy in meat, the davekat stans gotta be pissed that it's just full-stop Dave-isn't-even-in-the-universe-anymore finished in candy.

Oof, Dave’s whole thing in Candy is absolutely painful, yeah. Gotta wonder how much being a ship or character fan changes your perception of some things! I know a few Dirk Kins, one who LOVES HS^2 and what it’s doing, and one who’s very mad about a lot of the Dirk things going on in current content. Similarly, I know Jade fans very mad at this last update, and me and a couple of Jade-loving friends enjoyed it quite a bit. Just interesting things to think about.

if you are comfortable with spoilers then i will spoil you, especially bcz you are dirk kin (they made him so bad in this epilogue). i don't know how much you know but dirk basically takes the wheal of the plot in meat and controls events. he kills himself in candy because 'there is no challenges in this timeline' or something. in meat dead!calliope tries to stop his messing with the plot and is using passed out jade as her plot wessel to take the plot wheal herself. (1/2)

dirk is also a piece of garbage in meat. roxy comes out as nonbinary and dirk is so direspectful (not in her face but in narrative his making) and when dead!calliope takes the plot from him his voice is smaller he actively misgenders roxy and when calliope tells him to make an effort he says something like "why does it matter when nobody hears it anyway" and just. misgenders them all the way. and i remember he said d!calliope "they arent your toys to play with. they are mine" more or less. i don’t get what’s happening with calliope taking over the narrative from dirk but i’m honestly really upset that jade keeps getting booted from the epilogues by callie. Let Her Be. for the love of god.

and is callie acting as some sort of cruel parental figure to Dirk? do they just not care about anything aside from “stopping” him? i dont get what’s HAPPENING. what is the point of this????? at least when it was Dirk’s narrative i understood where it was going.

also i cannot believe that john sees terezi, both of them are dying, And Yet his thoughts are immediately “wow she’s...............hot.......” like it’s accurate to how men be as far as i know but i hate it

i honestly don’t get why JohnRezi is trying so hard to become canon in both epilogues.... what’s the thing that’s being communicated with this.... like davekat feels. right. in both of them, like it fits with both dave and karkat’s arcs about romance and sexuality. but frankly john has never felt like a person who was... romantically interested in anyone... Let Alone with a blackrom leaning (which seems to be what’s implied between him and terezi). so it feels unnecessary to his arc? like in the candy timeline it made sense for him to get with roxy Specifically to fall apart, because he kept trying to push himself into the role of being Romantic Male Interest that then was a father and husband. he’s got his own issues with masculinity that it doesn’t feel like he quite... ever dealt with. but he’s always given me the STRONG vibe of being aroace, and the terezi thing doesn’t. Fit with that. IMO. and i don’t know if i really get it from terezi’s side, either? like maybe i get it in terms of letting vriska go, but she could do that in other ways.....

Epilogues: Meat ch 33-37 [Epilogue 6]

Back in the hands of the D.

No I will not apologise for that phrasing.

chapter 33

Back to Johnrezi. With Dirk taking over, this scene is much less sweet. He describes the aftermath of pretty rough sex and suggests that John might have “cucked himself” into blackrom.

If we ignore Dirk’s cynical jabs, what’s basically happening is that John is very tired, but Terezi is looking after him. And with some more “encouragement” from Dirk, he tries to use his retcon powers to pop back into Earth C with Terezi.

Hoo boy Terezi will certainly liven up this election.

chapter 34

This chapter includes the Dirk forming the words “Karkat’s progressively prismatic proletarian partisans” and then immediately feeling shame. Contra Dirk, I think that’s excellent.

Anyway, Dirk’s intervention in this scene is to declare that Jake has been sweating so much that he’s smeared the speech into illegibility, forcing him to improvise. Then, Dirk starts working Jake’s mind over in the narration - making him think about having betrayed Jane and toyed with her heart, and getting his own ‘creepy dom’ act on:

He’s scared. He’s been scared. He’s been running from this feeling his entire life, all because he was so pants-shittingly terrified of being in love with Dirk Strider. And why wouldn’t he be afraid? He knows what will happen when he finally admits it. Knows deep down that to truly love Dirk would be to submit to him. That’s a scary thought. It takes a certain degree of mental fortitude to admit that you love someone so intensely it could subsume your entire personality.

But Jake can see now that it’s simply how things were meant to be. There are leaders in this world, and there are followers, which is a fact that has absolutely nothing to do with the position one prefers in the bedroom. Jake can’t believe he’s wasted years denying something so elemental to his nature that it might as well be on the periodic fucking table.

So Dirk makes him shout “I’m in love with Dirk!”, and having thus declared, he’s about to declare his endorsement - Dave goes to intervene - but then abruptly Dirk ends the scene before we actually hear the endorsement. I feel like that might come back to bite him.

chapter 35

John makes it back to Earth C, but he’s dying. Dirk gloats about how he’s a non-person, “a middling glob of human glue” used by those on the “higher narrative plane” such as himself, and the cherubs, due to his facility to have ‘you-ness’.

Dirk allows him a suitably Nic Cage-like final moment, dying in the middle of confessing his love to Terezi. Then he starts applying his dreadful meddling to Terezi instead.

chapter 36

Dirk rushes us through the next bits in summary (while insulting us for caring, naturally). He declares that Jane won the campaign, and Dave and Karkat are occupied tending to Jade, who’s in a coma. John is apparently her next of kin, but we know what happened to him. He expresses some uncertainty on what Terezi’s “supposed” to be feeling in this scenario, and just resorts to describing that she’s feeling emptiness.

Dirk continues to repeatedly misgender Roxy in the narration, even while describing how he’s transitioning in this timeline. (Note: ‘he’ pronouns for Roxy are introduced later in the chapter)

Roxy explains that in this timeline, as soon as they saw alt-Calliope, the Calliope here started writing about the Candy timeline on the wall:

ROXY: some of it is like

ROXY: weird and violent??

ROXY: like lotsa nasty purple blood and um

ROXY: nudity????

TEREZI: >:?

ROXY: yeah yikes

ROXY: but MOST of it is cute stuff like... various combos of all of us being happy and gettin married and shit

Terezi has not been checking her phone, which is because she’s not aware that she was texting the other John in the other C universe... or is she? You’d think she’d have realised by now that the relationships, children etc. that John described in his texts do not match this particular version of Earth C.

Terezi does appear to have some awareness of Dirk’s control over the narration:

Maybe, having watched her own friend group suffer stress fractures recently, she understands the weight of those words as uttered by this specific person. Because Terezi is a fixer, and it has been a very difficult lesson for her to learn that some things are simply out of her control. Maybe it’s just that Roxy can hear the bone-deep sorrow in her voice.

TEREZI: (OMFG)

TEREZI: (1TS “H1M” YOU FUCK1NG O4F!!!)

After this correction, Dirk starts patronisingly using the most male phrases possible to describe Roxy, clearly showing that he doesn’t really think Roxy’s ‘really’ a guy.

After Roxy leaves the scene, Dirk starts arguing directly with Terezi. Terezi at least is willing to put up a fight with his bullshit. (Thank fuck for Terezi, honestly...)

Dirk alludes to her depression, and offers to take her - and John - with him when he leaves, wherever the fuck he’s going.

Chapter 37

We’re only on Epilogue 6 here. Is Meat longer than 40 chapters, or are the last few epilogues only 1-2 chapters long each!?

Anyway, Rose and Dirk are preparing for their journey. Which will take them into the Candy universe, I guess. Rose is too weak with ‘omniscience sickness’ to effectively resist what DIrk’s doing with her. (We know he’s going to put her in a robot body eventually, but he’s not done it yet.)

Rose wonders if Kanaya will be OK with this. Obviously she won’t! But Dirk assures her he’ll take care of it, it’s best for everyone, etc. etc. Which is to say, he’s going to be fucking with her thoughts and internal monologue with all the grace of a tank. He forces Kanaya to say she’s fine with Rose going - that clearly Dirk is the one who understood her better, etc. etc.

It’s awful to read...

He also leaves an antidote for Jade, which rather implicates him, but I guess he’s beyond caring about that now.

Epilogue 6

This feels like a ‘Dirk’s victory’ chapter part - but we still don’t know what Dirk is trying to do. Well, we know he’s planning to create an SBurb session on a distant planet, but not the end to which he’s doing that!

We know he’s going to successfully leave. We also know that Rose has been horribly abused and manipulated into going along with him. There was no mention of Terezi on the ship in the postscript to Candy, so perhaps Terezi is going to think better of it.

Anyway, I feel like alt-Calliope must have at least one last trick up her sleeve.

Okay so, my Dirk and I share a few canons. So far we have

Commander Karkat and Dave

And we may share another timeline too. I'm not sure. I think I have a Dave timeline, and he was my bro. I only shifted once and don't have many memories, so I'm hoping to learn more about it. This is getting wack.

Course he doesn't want to talk about it. And I realized the other day how depressing his Dave Candy timeline is and I kept pushing him while I was in Commander Karkat shift, so I'm gonna lay back on that cause I feel like shit for it now.

And the dave and bro tl (not brodave, he was just my bro maybe) we sorta are low-key ignoring.

Idk, we'll figure it out.
