Choi Do-il really said "you're financially illiterate because you've never had the privilege to live beyond supermarket reward points or learn anything that wasn't absolutely required for your family's survival and NOT because you aren't intelligent enough". and that was very sexy of him.

Choi Do-il | How to Write a Mysterious Character
Tumblr media
There may have been criticism concerning the writing in the 2022 Korean version of Little Women, most of which was justified (honestly, the use of the Vietnam War to the plot wasn’t necessary and caused more issues than it served anything). However, it’s worth discussing one area where the writing did stand out as done exceptionally well. That is the mysterious character Choi Do-il.
Tumblr media
Do-il manages to avoid a lot of the pitfalls that can often show up when writing mysterious, shadowy characters. Unlike a lot of his predecessors, Do-il’s mystery isn’t rooted in bad morals or a corruption of values, but instead a lack of communication. He may not always tell the main characters what he’s up to, which naturally causes them to worry, but that mystery isn’t rooted in anything that sours his character.
Unlike other mysterious, sultry characters that use their mystery to hide the abuse they give to other people, Do-il only ever uses violence when he’s protecting somebody else or in a manner of self defense.
Tumblr media
Even more than this, we see him go out of his way to distance himself from his father, who has a history of violence and tries to entice Do-il to follow in his footsteps. A more amateur writer might show Do-il wrestling with this or being tempted by it in order to add to the more shadowy tones of the character, but instead Do-il immediately refuses the idea and puts a stop to his father’s nefarious plans.
Tumblr media
Do-il also avoids the trap many characters of his nature fall into and that is treating women disrespectfully.
Tumblr media
More often than not, a character like his would swagger around expecting all women to fall at his feet. But instead we only see him treat the women around him with the upmost respect. Particularly with In-joo, he goes out of his way to look for ways he can serve her and never expects anything in return. Instead of him trying to seduce her for his own selfish gain or talking down to her like her intelligence is unwanted, he highlights her strengths and weaknesses and uses them as a way to defeat their enemies while also distancing himself from her in order to keep her protected. He also takes the time to listen to any concern she may have, even when time is money and any precious minute costs them millions of won. When he has a piece of critical evidence that might help his family, he chooses to give it to In-kyung because he trusts her work and values her opinion. He never talks down to In-hye or Hyo-rin and respects their positions when most people write them off as ignorant children. Even his disdain of the main antagonist Sang-ah acknowledges her skill as an actress and a manipulator.
While most mysterious characters are often synonymous with being cold or distant, Do-il surprises as being extremely warm-hearted.
Tumblr media
His use of physical touch towards In-joo is always contained in the boundaries of respect and comfort, and serves to show how caring and compassionate he really is. When In-joo is crying and looks to him for help, he puts a hand on her shoulder to comfort her. When she is sick on the floor, he rests her head in his lap so he can care for her. When he has something important he wants to tell her, he reaches out to her to station her as his equal while giving that information. Unlike other shadowy figures, his physical touch isn’t rooted in a selfish desire to get something from In-joo or to simply please himself, but instead it’s to offer something without any expectation in return.
Tumblr media
Do-il manages to maintain all the charm and lure of a mysterious character, with the quizzical stares and the wonder of what he may be up to in the shadows, but every time the curtain is pulled back and the truth is revealed, his character stands apart by be honorable and good. He truly is the best of both worlds - managing to keep in tact all the fun and mystery that makes so many people fall for the villains, while having all the care, respect, and safety of any favorable hero, and that's what makes him such a good character.

I love how little women’s most badass characters are In kyung, reporter with a moral backbone made of steel who brings down an empire one news report at a time, and Do il, who is a criminal able to steal money from anyone and get away with basically any type of fraud…. And they both love In joo, who doesn’t know English or economy but loves her sisters more than anyone in the world and wants them to have a good life by any means necessary

Little Women ff -pt1
Choi Do Il and Oh In joo - The story continues!
For everyone (including me) who wished they could see them ending up together in the show. Special mention @choidoilgirl I hope you like this
Tumblr media
(The fanfic takes place after the sisters receive their share of money, Inkyung is in US and In Joo is in Seoul.)
It had been some time since the three sisters received their share of money courtesy of Choi Do il's meticulous planning; To think that the initial shock and surprise would finally settle down in In Joo   but it's been a while and something in her refused to settled down - strange sense of feeling that she couldn't quite name.
"Wow, when did you finally find time to video call your older sister? Huh Inkyung? And all for gossip… I expected better from you" Joo said, as if offended. "I'm more offended with your choices in men, lately" Inkyung was half laughing, after listening to In joo talk in detail about how her recent blind date went.
It was somewhere way beyond midnight, when Inkyung had rung up In joo. Under the dim lights of the tiny dining room, the sisters were catching up on details of each other's lives.
"So you're saying that not only did the guy asked you to pay for dinner at a fancy restaurant but also tried to sell his gym's membership? Like that was not bad?" Inkyung hadn't stopped laughing.
"ehhh it wasn't that bad" In joo protested, embarrassed, avoiding eye contact.
"yeah.. Maybe…a little" she added, massaging her temple.
"Seriously sister, have you learned nothing from the time you married that Asshole ?well… on the other hand you do seem to attract conmen all the time" Inkyung commented, though in a joking manner but her tone had a hint of reproach.
"Me and attract con men? Nonsense" In joo, dismissed her sister's claim.
"However, there's actually one I'll approve of," stated Inkyung, casually.
"Is my sister actually approving of a con man for me? Nice …I'm actually curious who that might be?"  InJoo asked impassively.
"He's quite the money laundering expert, saved your life and drove a German car while he was at it".
"Can you just be serious? I don't even know who you're talking about" In joo scolded Inkyung.
Inkyung paused, her face was a mix of disappointment and disbelief. "Are you for real? You're telling me you don't remember Choi Do Il?"
"tsk tsk", Inkyung clicked her tongue in disapproval.
"Why are we even talking about him all of a sudden?" In joo said with a small laugh.
Whenever In Joo was embarrassed, she would do this thing where she would laugh abruptly and quietly avoiding eye contact as if it would brush something under the rug.
A Distraction.
Inkyung of course knew that very well of her older sister, she also felt to some extent slightly guilty about leaving In Joo all alone in Seoul.
"Well, I'm just saying…you know? If you had to really date someone…you could date someone who always had your best interests at heart, while going to hell and back…..in a nice german car of course - a plus point." Inkyung's voice was very matter of factly but with an edge.
InJoo made a noise that sounded as if she was coughing.
"Anyways…I gotta go, I have class and I have to meet Jongho before class begins"
"Great to know you've replaced me with Jongho… who you literally see everyday" said In joo jokingly. "tell him, I said hi"
Inkyung laughed, "well nobody's stopping you from going all out to replace me either, preferably with a guy who drives a German car, I would be the happiest"
"Wow, would you look at that…you've turned more American than I would have liked"
"HMMM, yes and you're still single. Please do something about that. I'm going now… take care?"
"yeah yeah… I will. Eat well, stay warm and healthy since it's going to winter soon"
Inkyung waved goodbye and the screen of injoo's phone went back to her kakao's chatbox.
Although this was any other conversation at any given day of the month, It left in joo feeling more unsettled than before. Why did she feel a sudden ache in her body? She felt something similar when Choi Do Il was at the airport, leaving for Greece; the feeling was much lighter then. Today it felt heavier than before, like there was something unfolding in her chest.
Inkyung, as soon as the video call  disconnected stared at the phone for a moment, she knew there were times when In joo pushed her and Jongho together probably more subtly, she couldn't help but worry about her older sister.
Without her and Inhye and definitely not counting her parents. In joo was more lonely - a thought that often crossed inkyung's mind, except for a once in a month conversation, they didn't have time to speak to each other often.
InJoo looked happy in the video calls but Inkyung knew better than anyone that her sister was quite lonely.
Her sister deserved the money but she deserved happiness and someone who would make a fantastic partner and because Inkyung did not trust people, let alone In Joo's choice in men.
"I really… for your sake, hope you go after love this time" Inkyung whispered to the blank screen .
(Note: I still haven't come up with a title once I do, I will update this.)

the highlight of ep 10 is choi do-il's dad breaking out of his "lone bad wolf" act (like father like son) to give us slight comedic moments and to be the captain of the dojoo ship

Little Women Ep 10 Theories and Analysis: Choi Do-il did not betray Oh Injoo
Spoiler alert if you have yet to watch episode 10!
(1) Choi Do-il's Betrayal? I think not.
In the last scene of episode 10, we find that Oh In-Joo's bank account have been completely wiped out supposedly by Choi Do-il.
Tumblr media
We have been warned many times that Choi Do-il was not to be trusted but I still trust him. Here's why:
1. Hyorin's bank book
Tumblr media
In this scene where Hyerin was saved by the 3 of them, Do-il took the banks books and placed it in his bag (but yes, the besties had to use them to go overseas but he might have kept one of them).
What if, Do-il was expecting something to happen and transferred the 70 billion won to somewhere else safe - like Hyorin's bank? Some theorize that it was to frame Sangah for embezzling the 70 billion won by putting them in her daughter's bank.
2. Choi Do-il character
Tumblr media
Ngl, I think he's in love with Oh Injoo LOL + even though he dislike's his father, he still did not abandon him for his mother, showing how he is still a human being who will empathise with others around him - including the Oh's sisters.
3. Choi Do-il's father being caught by the police
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do-il's father was caught by the police for holding onto guns but the gun that his father had was placed in Do-il's bag, NOT his father's bag.
BUT there was so much emphasis on his father's bag that makes us wonder - what was SO important in the bag that his father would say such a thing? Could be the bank books? Could be Blue Orchids? But I guess we will find out this game changer next week.
(2) The Creepy Blue Orchid
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you look closely at the scene where Jaesang was with Sangah at the hospital, the look at Jaesang's face was unusual - as if Sangah had passed him the blue orchid and he knew his time was up. Sang-ah got tired of one her favourite play toys. You can look at this scene here
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As soon as Jaesang's suicide news broke out, the speechless Inkyung stared at the camera in shock, confusion and fear all at once. Then, we are shown the blue orchid through the camera lens - seemingly foreshadowing her downfall and that she is next (as seen in her kidnapping the the next episode's preview)
That's all as I can only fit 10 photos here, posting more theories soon! Do check out my other theory in which I give evidence that Hwayoung is still alive here ! Or follow for more theories!

“In-joo. That mouth of yours drives me insane. Even when you’re nagging.”
She makes an exasperated sound. “You know what? Just think of me like construction noise. May it haunt you forever.”
“No, I mean,” he says, exhaling long and hard. Something in him deflating. “It’s actually one of the things I like most about you. In case that wasn’t clear.”
“Oh.”
It’s stark, this news, this tiny confession. Because this reshuffles everything, changes her recognition of what this about. That there is nothing to sign, no final transaction to be made, no money to be chased by this man who once measured the worth of his existence in Won and Dollars.
Do-il had sacrificed this for her, took the fall for her, deemed her worthy of coming back for.
The idea, encroaching, like a tidal wave: that he’d done a cost benefit analysis of where and how she might fit into his life, and found the pieces of her, the mess, good enough to keep around.
