One Last Thing (A RWBY V8 AU)
A/N : purely self indulgent so who knows how committed I'll be ? centered around Neo and my sort of self projecting OC, Christyl Orai (20 y/o, she/her), whose semblance is basically lightning (it flows in her blood, so using it would not only drain her aura but also her blood)
Prologue | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2
Neo didn't have the chance to protest as the door was locked right in front of her face. Gritting her teeth together and hissing through it, the petite girl started stomping one foot on the floor with displease. When she agreed to Cinder's deal for the second time in her life, she at least expected the least bit of respect from her, but no. If anything, her attitude's gotten worse since the Beacon incident.
Roman would never treat her that way.
The sentence quickly got pushed out of thought as Neo reminded herself where she was. Before she even fully turned around to take in her surroundings, a snarky voice filled the room. Jeez, at least put her in a room alone-
"Of all rooms for her to lock you in, it's here."
Neo warily spun on her heels to find the figure speaking to her. The person was sitting on the counter, and only once Neo notices what the room was did she raise an eyebrow. Did Cinder just lock her in a bar? And why would this person be here in the first place? Not only that, why was the voice so distinctively familiar?
"The queen put me here, I'm barely even old enough to drink those." The figure clarified when they saw Neo suspiciously eyeing the expensive, towering glass bottles near her. Neo cringed at how Salem was referred to as, walking over to take a seat at the other end of the countertop. Since the room only had a half lit candle as a sorry excuse for a light source, Neo wasn't able to see the person's face. As if reading her mind, they showed off their fist and a red glow began emitting from it. It turns out the glow wasn't just a glow, but rather an electric charged glow.
"A little knack I got recently." They explained with a bitter sounding chuckle. They then charged their other hand and proceeded to clap both hands in a swift motion. Before her heterochromic eyes, the room was suddenly half lit. Only then was Neo able to recognize their face. Their face, part of which were one of a grimm's. The skin surrounding their right eye was pitch black with white spots here and there, that specific eye colored crimson. Oddly enough, it wasn't glowing. Somehow it wasn't like that with the rest of their body, but then again Neo knew better than to judge from first glance.
This actually wasn't the first time they've met, explaining her recognition of their voice and their casuality with her. Not that the two of them were ever playing on the same side. Or possibly, now they are. "Orai." Neo signed with her fingers, expression a tad bit more playful. "Politan." Christyl humored her.
Neo took off 'her' fedora and gently set it beside her, fondly staring at it for a second. She then crossed one leg on top of the other and brought her beloved disguised weapon on her lap. A remodelling was long over due, she remembered thinking months before this whole ordeal. After hours and hours of trying different designs for it which admittedly exhausted her aura, she came up with a design she was satisfied with. Anyone could tell her that was a waste of time for something as trivial as an aesthetic aspect, but anyone who even tries to would end up with a stab or two. Maybe a missing head if Neo wasn't feeling nice.
"So, assets, huh?" Neo hoisted her parasol and threateningly pointed it under her company's chin. "Cinder's words first, not mine." Chris defended herself, shrugging as if she wasn't in any sort of danger. That was probably why Neo particularly liked their fight that night on top of the skyscraper. Having the upper hand in combat while maintaining grace has always been what Neo's known for, but even she enjoys an equal fight with mutual sass every once in a while. An eloquent way to break routine for once.
Lowering her weapon, Neo didn't break her glare aimed right in Chris' eyes, to which the latter once again chuckled at. "Besides, I was roped in this stupid cult before you were, so that's your win." The platinum blonde begrudgingly stated, earning a triumphant smile from Neo. "But you know, of all people to fall for Cinder's antics twice I didn't think it'd be you." Chris sneered. "Not my best, I must say." Neo signed, rolling her eyes.
"Why did you, anyway?"
"She offered a chance at long deserved retribution."
"Oh ?"
"Ruby Rose."
"Oh."
"Don't get me wrong, killing that brat never was my intention. I was stalking Cinder before we had a proper.. talk."
"You attempted to murder her."
"No, I simply requested a friendly reunion chat."
"Which included stabbing."
"I wish."
"And it wasn't fulfilled, I'm guessing?"
"Cinder revealed her maiden powers before I got the chance."
"So you got scared?"
"A maiden's capability isn't to be laughed at, Orai. I believe you out of everyone should be aware of that, considering the state of your late mother."
"You sure know where it hurts, Politan."
"Why, thank you."
"Though, yeah, I do know, was just teasing."
"Glad to see you haven't lost your touch. Say, wouldn't you agree that a rematch is an absolute must to hold ?"
"Can't argue with that."

One Last Thing (A RWBY V8 AU)
Prologue | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2
"..You two have gotten close." Emerald commented. Chris slowly looked up from her game, fully conscious of the fact that Neo was clinging onto her back. "What gave you that idea?" Chris deadpanned, focusing back on her scroll. "I- you know what, never mind." Emerald let out an exasperated sigh before going to leave the room. "Cinder's room is the second one down the left." Chris inquired, unsolicited. "I- I know that!" The mint haired girl weakly snapped, blood running up her face.
Neo watched Emerald leave, not so subtly amused with her flustered manner. "You enjoy giving her a hard time, I see." She wrote on Chris' back. "She's the easiest to tease here. Mercury and I have a good laugh from time to time, but business prevents anything more. I have a hunch Hazel doesn't like me, and Tyrian's.. Tyrian." The blonde explained. "And as for Salem, I have to keep up an act." Chris rolled her eyes in displease.
"I may know a thing or two about that."
"Figured as much."
The next moments were spent in silence, as with how they've spent half their time the past few weeks. Sometimes in the exact position they were in at that time, Chris sat on the floor while Neo very conveniently sat either on Chris' lap or on her back. Due to her smaller frame, Chris' back wasn't given what's considered to be medically dangerous amounts of pressure.
Salem has actually caught them in the act in a couple occasions, and surprisingly could not care less. In fact, she didn't bat an eye and cut straight to the chase every time. Cinder raised an eyebrow the first time yet flat out ignores them the next, Mercury shrugs it off, Hazel is his gruff self yet says nothing, while Tyrian's.. again, Tyrian. More specifically, he told Chris to quote, "Keep the little gremlin of yours in check," and in response Chris gave a mere chuckle while Neo fires a glare at the scorpion.
That night in particular, Neo felt particularly bored. Don't get her wrong, Chris was pretty much the only thing taming her on the daily, but something was missing. Cliché to 'say', she knows and loathes it. The deja vù hit Neo by surprise just as she was about to execute her little plan. Roman's voice calling out her name as she flew away along with her parasol barged in her head.
No. Absolutely no way am I reducing myself to the disarray I was in the past.
With newfound, unexpected streak of determination, Neo traced Chris' jawline and made her way to the grimm hybrid's chin. At first, Chris didn't react, having gotten used to the flirtatious gestures. Once Neo began pulling her face towards hers though, it sent her adrenaline rushing. Neo roughly smashed their lips together, desperate to forget everything from her late lover, Cinder mistreating her, Salem, everything. Kissing Roman was different, though not too different. It'll never be the same with anyone, anyway.
Something about Neo's action didn't sit right with Chris, and she can't pinpoint exactly why. It lacked the usual playful nature Neo had, and there was barely any teasing.
For a second, Chris forgot it was Neo.
°
Chris was sitting all by herself on one of the roofs in the palace, with the excuse of patrolling. Well, she just came up with it in case one of the crew, or maybe Salem herself, asks why. In reality, she didn't have any particular reason to lounge in such an unusual place any other day. This time though, the excuse technically wasn't necessary. Well, it was complicated.
Her eyes were locked on one thing and one thing only; Neo. Neo, who was trailing behind Cinder with Emerald not far behind. The group was leaving the vicinity and if Chris didn't know any better, she was certain that wasn't Salem's orders. If it was, they wouldn't be sneaking out. And sure, two of the three had illusion related semblance which would make the escape a hell of a lot easier, but this was Salem they were getting away from for who knows what.
Even after the time Chris received to observe Cinder, her motives to her other than power weren't exactly crystal clear. The two could be said were Salem's most valuable lackeys, one being the fall maiden herself and the other was her adopted, half grimm child. She couldn't say she was proud - quite the opposite - but alas, there was no way out.
Just as the three were boarding the airship, Chris noticed Neo was subtly looking her way, as Cinder and Emerald wasn't paying attention to her. The ice cream named woman tipped her fedora ever so slightly, offering a small wave. Just like their shared moment the night prior, it didn't feel like Neo was being herself. The expression of displease just proves it.
A minute later, the airship took off with Neo in the driver's seat as per usual. Chris watched as the vehicle finally fade out of view, before looking down towards the main doorway when she heard someone leaving. Or entering ? No, leaving, she confirmed, seeing Tyrian standing there on all fours whilst cackling like a maniac. Basically, how he typically cackles.
Whatever they were up to, they're already under Salem's radar.
°
"Child," Salem beckoned Chris over, sitting on her throne with Hazel and Mercury guarding the door where Chris entered from. The half grimm warily glanced at the two men before approaching Salem, her shoes tapping on the ground as she walks. "How can I be of assistance, my liege?" Chris asked in the most polite tone she could manage, getting on one knee as a knight would. "Firstly, please, address me as your Mother." Salem requested, ruffling Chris' silver hair.
"Yes, Mother."
"Very good. Now, I have a favor to ask you."
"And what may that be?"
"I would like you to go to this location. I have sent you the coordinates."
"Is there a specific objective?"
"Yes. I believe the airship our little Cinder arrived with has mysteriously disappeared.. along with Cinder herself."
"And also her two little minions, as Tyrian told me." Hazel's eyebrows furrowed as he added. "Correct. Your mission would be to simply retrieve them, dead or alive. Preferably alive for Cinder, I don't care much for the other two." Chris' nerce tensed at the last part, but remained silent. "Is there anything else?" She asked instead. "No. You may take your leave now." Salem gestured to the door.
Mercury was ordered to walk Chris out the building, which she was thankful for. He was a much better match for her compared to Hazel. "You better get Emerald back." Mercury growled. Chris looked at him up and down briefly, before nodding. Combing the two orders with her own, it basically means Chris has to get all three of them back, hopefully in one piece.
But as Chris finds Emerald carrying an unconscious Cinder in her arms while Neo was blasted by Penny's laser beam against the airship, which seemed to deplete most of her aura, it seemed like that would be wishful thinking.

One Last Thing (A RWBY V8 AU)
Prologue | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2
Neo claimed victorious as she had Chris trapped on the ground with one of her boots locking Chris' back in place, the sharp tip of her parasol placed gently on the back of her neck. "So Cinder was right, after all." Chris said with a cough as Neo released her. The ice cream themed girl jutted her bottom lip out with curiosity, flicking her hat with her finger. "You've gotten stronger." Chris echoed, brushing off the dirt that had gotten on her clothes.
"So have you, dearie. Especially with your new friend there." Neo pointed at Chris' corrupt eye. "An added bonus he gives during battle, while I resent him. Reminds me of Dante, though." Chris frowned briefly. "Your girlfriend's pet of a semblance?" Neo recalled. "Not my girlfriend, yet. Probably never will be. But yep, hers." Chris muttered.
Neo raised her hand to sign out another sentence, but was abruptly cut off by the door to the palace opening. Neo stood her ground while Chris nonchalantly turned around to see Salem standing by the double doors, Emerald and Mercury on either sides of her. "How did your little sparring go, Child?" Salem asked, an expectant smile plastered on her face. "Her well deserved win, your grace." Chris announced, turning to Neo.
"I see. Disappointing it was that I didn't get the chance to see it myself. You really seem to have valuable assets to offer, as I was informed." Salem said pointedly, while Neo almost flinched when Cinder's remark was brought up again. "Very well, then. I will see you both in an hour sharp for an overview." Salem told them before retreating inside. Emerald and Mercury exchanged glances between themselves before turning to Neo and Chris, and following behind Salem as the doors close on its own.
"Your grace." Chris mocked her own words once she sensed nobody else could hear her say it. "It pains me to pretend to put her on a pedestal, it really does." The younger groaned, readjusting her gauntlets. "Tell me about it." Neo agreed, unamused. "Fuck knows how Cinder does it." Chris pointed out. "Or I don't know, maybe she wasn't faking it. Salem probably has some kind of spell cast over her." She continued to theorize.
When Neo doesn't respond, Chris resorted to a different plan. "Round two?" She suggested with a grin. "With pleasure." Neo quickly signed before getting into position. As always, Chris boldly charged first and threw a punch to Neo's face, quickly blocked with an open parasol.
°
"So all this time you do have a room?" Neo asked once Tyrian had left. He was assigned to escort them there, which Neo deemed completely unnecessary, since even she was creeped out by the faunus' mannerism. "I do, but I was grounded yesterday. Figures that's why Cinder chose that room for you." Chris told her, taking off her weapons one by one and setting them on a shelf by her bed. "Room's always had two beds, just didn't have anyone else to occupy it." Chris explained while Neo scanned the area.
Compared to the bar they were previously locked up in, it was a lot more well lit. It had a chandelier hanging in the middle of the room, and Neo speculated that it was connected to a switch somewhere on the wall. "Wait. Grounded?" Neo tilted her head. "Long story. It involves experimenting with grimm." Chris said vaguely. "Like what Salem was doing?" Neo remembered what Mercury and Emerald whispered between themselves when they thought she couldn't hear.
"I guess, but with less experience." Chris went to close the scarlet tinted curtains, blocking off the moonlight. As with everything else in the palace, the room was themed around a grimm's physical features. The walls were a combination of black and red with white ornaments, the doors were usually red with its handles sometimes made out of ominous hands or claws, the window frames were heavily ornated in the same traditional, dark way. Neo couldn't say it was her favourite, but she does appreciate the gorey additions here and there.
Neo stood in the middle of the room, both hands perched on her parasol's handle and one foot tapping. Once she finished taking in her surroundings, she looked over to Chris, sat on one of the beds and scroll in hand. Silently snickering, Neo held her parasol up and hooked the back of Chris' neck with its handle. The younger's attention was diverted successfully, Chris returning the eye contact with confusion. "I had something to ask." Neo signed with her unoccupied hand.
"Which would be?"
"What is it that gave you the little.. push?"
"Push to where, exactly?"
"Why, to the dark side, of course."
"Oh. You wanted to know that."
"Does that trouble you?"
"Not anymore. It's been a year."
"A year since you faked your death, yes."
"That's what they told you?"
"I've heard as such."
"It's not false per se, but it's not like I did it willingly."
"Let me guess, that's what little old witchy bitchy threatened you to do, else she'd kill both you and everyone you love."
"While she did threaten me, no, no death threats in my case."
"Of course, she had other plans in mind, I'd guess."
"You can say that."
"I presume it's far too early for further explanation?"
"More like far too late. It's 3 AM, Politan."
"Does that not count as early?"
"I don't know, who cares? I'm playing the errand child tomorrow so any amount of rest is much appreciated."
"Such a shame. Very well, then."
Chris switched off the lone night light on the table before laying on her bed, arms crossed as a head rest. With no warning, a weight was placed gently on her chest. It was so light that Chris could probably throw the figure to the bed across the room no problem. Well, there would be a problem considering the figure in question is a certain vicious petite woman that would certainly slit her throat if that was done. Chris was too tired to argue, so she just accepted her fate.
