My confidence in navigating around London tube has really grown, and honestly, I couldn't have done it without citymapper helping me.
I love having my confidence grow each time I go to London and finding my own feet there. It's a daunting city to me, but having this app is a lifesaver.

So funny to go to Europe and start living a completely different life, i.e. using WhatsApp instead of iMessage and Citymapper instead of Google Maps.

Actual advice for UK marchers:
Wear comfy shoes and a warm jacket
Take water and snacks
Prepare to be bored! If you're not bored something has gone wrong, get the fuck out of there.
Mobile signal will be shot. The tube will be packed. Take a bus. If you can get WiFi, use the app citymapper to figure out creative ways of getting places!
Those people handing out the 'know your rights' leaflets? Stick with them. If you have time you can even order a little booklet of your own from Liberty setting these out!
Don't bother with the guys handing out copies of the Socialist Worker, it's a victim-blaming, slut-shaming, rapist-apologising rag.
Don't do anything extravagantly dumb like pissing on a poppy wreath or dropping a fire hydrant off a building. Don't be a fucking antisemite. Stay well away from anyone doing any of these things.
Enjoy the fact you're really upsetting the government and they couldn't do anything to stop you exercising your legal right to protest! Be glad you are in England, not Northern Ireland, where the use of water cannon is still legal.
And a final note of caution to say, if I were going, I would take care to wear a face-covering of some kind. After the event the police will be going through footage and facial recognition software is known to throw up false positives on non-white faces in particular.

The week this past September when I was in possession of the keys to a Brooklyn apartment and learned to navigate the MTA without Google maps or citymapper and walked the new york streets at 2am when light and music and laughter are still pouring out onto the sidewalk and was offered drinks by a woman I did not know who was hosting a barbecue on her stoop. was like a glimpse into another life I could've begun living six years ago or I could begin living any year now. I probably won't. It was like a little pocket where the world was old and I was new. And then I went back to the west coast. There is so much life to live out there and so many facets and potential routes to explore it's so exciting and I hate that my friends are so geographically dispersed but I love the breadth of experiences they are able to share with me ♥️ and I love new york city and the great state of New Jersey and the unshaded concrete outside MetLife stadium

I'm in New York City. I pulled up Citymapper, flipped it from London to NYC, tapped in the name of the restaurant where I'm meeting friends. It gave me a drop-down of my recently-visited places.
They should not let apps give you your recently-visited places when the people you went there with are dead.
Facetious I think and yes yes I am glad I'm here I had to do this sometime but I walked around the Lower East Side for an hour or two tonight trying to get my head back together and didn't really get there. Grief is. Grief is vast, and unknowable, and you just. Picture me in the late aughts, cute as hell, picking up phone, keys, metrocard, here in this same place, going to see the same friends, with absolutely no opinions on the unknowability of grief. She is here, too. I don't even know.

AAAAAh-ing at the cobbler shop/trust fund kid riff on the kingsman concept! SO GOOD! a film plot point could revolve around how oscar used to be a field agent but he was at another agency (possibly evil... enipla) and escaped or got burned and had to go to ground for a bit. could be funny to see lando forced to balance his roles as Titled Money while also being an agent i should also note for clarity's sake that i am the same froot circus/verbiage anon —🤡
FROOT CIRCUS VERBIAGE ANON i was just thinking about you the other morning lmaooo hello again clown compatriot.
ohhh i do love oscar coming from a nefarious agency lmao. it took me a while to work out ENIPLA but how BRILLIANT ur MIND!!! agree there was a complicated mission that went south and oscar basically drove out of there while the building was on fire and switched to a more sedate life at the cobbler's after that. that's my headcanon now
lando forced to balance his roles as Titled Money while also being an agent -> lando has a moment of embarrassment while staring at citymapper cus he never rides the tube/subway. and oscar is standing with him like... okay i know you're dyslexic on top of being filthy rich so i'll cut you a bit of slack here, just follow me and if you're at risk of losing me grab my coat.
and lando grabs his coat within like one minute and oscar is like "there's nobody here mate" and lando's like "yeah. i know" and oscar is like.... 🤨 and lando is also like.... 🤨🤨

Realising I'm going to London tomorrow and going to see two theatre shows this weekend, but having to navigate the system that is hell (the underground tube) by myself is stressful.

As someone who really wants to visit London one day, what are your basic traveling tips for going there? 😊
ooo okay here’s just some stuff off the top of my head!
get an Oyster card and take the tube (subway) and buses everywhere. i promise it’s easy to navigate but Ubers/taxis are just a waste of money tbh
Citymapper. Citymapper. Citymapper.
public transport “etiquette” is interesting there. people don’t look around, they keep to themselves, and they don’t talk much, even to their friends and people they know
when you ride an escalator— stand on the right, walk on the left
this is so random lol but be prepared for familiar brands to taste different (mostly applies to chips/crisps, candy, and soda)
Greggs is a place that’s quick, easy, inexpensive, and honestly pretty good for what you’re paying
when you go out to eat, tipping isn’t really a thing there (because servers actually get paid). some places will have an optional 10% service charge but you can have it removed if you really want
because servers aren’t making all their money off tips, they’re not going to try to rush you out, and so you have to actually ask for the bill when you’re ready to leave
so the Indian and Bangladeshi food is really good because many people migrated to the UK from those countries. you can ask them to make it mild if you don’t like spicy, but it’s worth trying. maybe go to Brick Lane!
this goes for any place you’re traveling, but leave time to do “nothing.” don’t overpack your schedule because you’ll enjoy it less overall. leave time here and there to wander aimlessly and just romanticize your life yk?
that being said, prioritize certain touristy things you want to do but don’t do them all. i’d recommend a walking tour of the City of Westminster and the Tower of London!
it’s the heart of theatre so see at least one show! can be a musical if you really want, but the plays are better! or maybe one of each! if a show offers them, get rush tickets to save money (comment or dm if you have no idea what that means lol)
Covent Garden during the day (try Ben’s Cookies while you’re there), Soho at night. Soho has good food, good pubs, and good nightlife. just a fun place to be!
Simmons and O’Niells are fun pub chains!
tbh that’s all that’s coming to mind rn but please lmk if you end up going and we can chat more about it! i’m planning to go back a couple of times and then move there permanently :)

Today in Eco-Ableism
So after a negative experience with Google Maps telling me as a cyclist to go on fairly unsafe roads a frend recommended CityMapper to me, which lets you control how safe/quiet vs direct a route you want your cycling route to be.
This sounds great! So I loaded up the app and...
Tumblr media
...and it's calorie estimates *everywhere*. When you tell it from where to where you want to go in its list of possible routes, every one that shows up has both a distance AND a calorie estimate beside it.
When you select a route, there is a calorie estimate.
When you open up the route on your phone it tells you how many meals the route's calorie estimate is equivalent to.
And there is no way to turn the calorie estimates off.
It's so gross how many cycling people are so deeply ableist and anti-fat that they think mandatory prominent calorie estimates are a good idea.
It's such a clear message that only certain thin, healthy, abled people should be cycling. And such a naive idea that this will somehow "help" people lose weight rather than consult with fat people about what would actually make cycling more inclusive.

Hey so glad to hear youre travelling! I'm assuming you're travelling as a foreigner? Just want to ask, because i'm planning to go later in the year:
do they accept overseas vaccination cards? or how do you get them approved before leaving?
there is no quarantine when you arrive?
for someone who doesn't speak any korean, will it be super dificult to travel around?
re public transport, is it easy to navigate?
Hello Anon,
Yes. I am traveling as a foreigner from the USA. I don’t know where you are coming from so what was true for me may be different for you if you are not American. So check the Korean requirements for your country.
Here are the answers to your questions for Americans:
1. Vaccinations are not required to come or at least they weren’t when I came in June 2022. I am fully vaccinated and double boosted and brought my card with me. But make sure to get your K-ETA visa before you come and register your negative test in QCode before you leave. They will ask for the place you are staying and their phone number and address. They will call them too.
2. No quarantine is required unless you test positive when you arrive. You have to test negative before you are allowed on the plane to Korea. You can do a PCR test up to 2 days before you leave or a supervised rapid test 1 day before you leave. The day matters. If you leave on Wednesday then your PCR test has to be from Monday or later. The supervised Rapid test has to be from Tuesday. Then when you arrive in Korea you have to test again within 24 hours of arriving. We went through customs and then immediately went to test in the Incheon airport around 6 pm and got our results the next morning in our email. You are allowed to travel to your hotel or wherever you are staying but cannot move around from there other than to get food until the negative result comes in. If you test positive then they will quarantine you for 7 days. So wear that mask everywhere before coming. After that you are free to move about the country. They will call whoever you left as the contact and ask for the negative test results.
3. Is it difficult not knowing Korean? Depends on where you plan to travel. In Seoul, Busan, Daegu, it is easy. Most people speak English to a degree and they are used to having a lot of foreigners so it is tailored more for non-Korean speakers. Outside of the cities, it is more difficult but is do-able if you use Papago app to help translate. I speak a bit of Korean but I use Papago a lot in the rural parts of Korea. Don’t let not knowing Korean hinder your travel. With that said, make sure to get your wifi or SIM card at Incheon before you leave. And download KakaoTalk, Papago, and Naver maps in your home country before coming here. You cannot get them here usually.
4. I love their public transport system! I travel all over using it. It is superb in the bigger cities like Seoul Busan Daegu etc. In the countryside, it is great but requires more planning because the buses don’t come as often and stop earlier in the evening. Also you have to navigate the Intercity buses but the Intercity Bus app is useful but takes a lot of planning. There are taxis though in the rural parts though.
In Seoul, I prefer to use an app called Citymapper to find my way around. But Naver Maps is good too. I use Naver Maps everywhere else to find my way around.
Depending on where you stay, use the airport bus or AREX to get from Incheon airport to your stay. I have used both. The hotel I stayed at this time was perfect because the AREX was right under the hotel. And the hotel was smack in the middle of Hongdae easy to get to and Tons of fun, food and shopping.
Jeju is harder to get around for me. So I usually book bus tours. They are awesome and I get to see so much with them.
I hope this helps. If you have any other questions or need recommendations for Airbnbs or hostels or hotels itinerary let me know.
Jikookerie💜

Oh, thanks! For some reason I thought it was more complicated than that.
I went to my first ever football game last night, and it was not very happy, so lets hope for a good night!
It's pretty straight-forward luckily :) I'd suggest citymapper for getting around London, it also tells you how much everything costs and exactly where to go like what exit and stuff so I really like it
And that's so cool!! Hope you had a great time yesterday
