#cm ask

ooh apologies for the super long ask but here's my controversial cm take (well maybe not controversial here, but in general) the longer i got into the show, the more i disliked reid. like i like the concept of him as a character, especially in the early seasons, but his fandom is so obnoxious and the writers played into that too much imo. like one of the things i like about cm is that there's a cast of characters and no real main character, but it really felt like they were giving reid main character syndrome in those last few seasons. also i feel like most of his fans only like him because he's hot (which imo is debatable but that might just be because i'm a lesbian) and they completely mischaracterize him because of it. wdym spencer reid is a domtop sex god he can't talk to women
also i feel like because reid is a supergenius with an iq of 187, the whole fandom discounts how smart the rest of the team is (except blake and maybe garcia, she gets her flowers). like derek went to college on a scholarship, worked as a cop in chicago, worked the bomb squad, and became an expert in obsessional crimes all before joining the bau and he was only in his early 30s in s1. or emily speaks like five languages, went to yale, worked in counterterrorism, went undercover with doyle, and was only 36 when she joined the team. don't even get me started on how the team underestimates jj's intelligence because she's pretty and she was "only" the media liaison and not a "real" profiler despite the fact that she helped profile them countless times before becoming a profiler. she was literally 27 in the first season and it's implied she had been working for the bau for a few years at that point. the bau is one of the most prestigious units in the entire fbi, and it's insanely impressive that she got such a position at such a young age, but people want to act like she's not smart.
also i commented on what it takes on ao3 (my user is repugaytion) and you asked me what my tumblr is, that was me, hiiii! i did in fact read that entire fic instead of studying for my midterm, but dw i had some time to study beforehand, and i aced the exam. no more prioritizing jemily over studying tho lmao

(1) I agree with you! I think he's a fine character, but the fanbase was really loud and the writers just leaned more and more into that without considering the other characters. I also think he's smart, but more so, he's good at memorizing and regurgitating information. He usually isn't the one to make actual connections. He gives facts and it's someone else who puts them together. Also Also other people are so so smart and it's over shadowed by his ability to say numbers quickly. It's so frustrating. Everyone is an expert in something, but the show pretends that he's the only smart one.
(2) I hate when people write Spencer as a sex god or like super hot man in bed because like he's a dweeb ass dweeb and that's what makes him so amazing! he's just this nerdy guy who's sweet because he has no interest in pretending to be something he's not. I think mot of his fandom doesn't actually like him. They think he's hot and then make up whatever they want about him.
(3) hellooooooo! I'm glad you aced your exam haha I was worried!

I still affirm that the most queer subtext in CM is in heat. The episode willifer is confirmed is the gayest. Still don’t know how it wasn’t a coming out episode, JJ’s speech to hitch is so queer coded. And then it ends with Emily saying she should go for will. Add Emily’s reactions to everything and it’s really just a whole ass mess.
the way JJ said "he could finally be who he is" was SO loaded, Hotch gave her a knowing look.
Emily pushing JJ to Will and her reaction afterwards screams sapphic yearning. love the juxtaposition of (probably) the gayest episode being centered around confirming a m/f ship + girl's friend's reaction to it. IT'S GIVING ANGSTY QUEER DRAMA.

I once read a fanfic and love the idea…
Hotch ringing JJ in the middle of the night to let her know that the team have a case and to call everyone in but Emily accidentally answers the phone, thinking it is hers.
Ahahaha
Hotch would pause for a moment and then just "could you hand the phone to JJ?" and Emily realizes her mistake and is sooo embarrassed and just says "yep" and hands it over lmao

Do you have a favourite jemily soulmates trope??
I'm a big fan of the soulmate trope where you feel pain when your soulmate feels pain or the one where you write on your skin and it shows up on your soulmates.
I like the writing one a lot because of the age difference between them. So, like if JJ learns how to write at like 6, then Emily is already 14. Emily would think she doesn't have a soulmate and then when the writing starts, it's a child a;lsdkfj
She'd be so confused until JJ was like actually old enough to write well and then she'd think of her soulmate as a kid for a long time. Like, imagine they don't actually talk a lot because Emily can't be bothered and then like during Doyle, she just needs someone to talk to. She's 30 and JJ is 22 (in the academy or like considering it).
JJ starts at the BAU and gets busy and like Emily can't have words on her for safety, so they stop talking. Then, Emily starts at the BAU and is like "hmm, wonder what my soul mate is up to."
IMAGINE IF SHE WRITES ON HER ARM ON THE PLANE
She's just randomly doodling on her arm (maybe that was a thing she and JJ did to just remind each other they aren't alone) and JJ is sitting across from her at the table and the doodles just start showing up. Emily doesn't notice at first, and then here's JJ like choke on her coffee and looks up and they're both like ???
but that's soulmates for you!

emily washing jj’s hair for her because she can’t submerge her head without having ptsd of being waterboarded
Omg
JJ goes to take a shower and just starts screaming and Emily bursts into the bathroom with her gun and finds JJ huddled in a corner, naked, and wet. After that, Emily washes her hair in a basin every day. JJ gets to sit down and rest and Emily is so careful not to get any water on her face. It's so gentle and the whole area smells like honeysuckle and JJ can actually relax

Thanks!
4: What do they fight about?
I think their arguments would mostly be about staying safe at work mostly. That or like JJ doesn't put her laundry in the bin or Emily doesn't think about cleaning the house because she's never had to. It's all small arguments as they adjust to living together.
5: How do they resolve fights?
I don't think they're "real" fights, but more like tension as they adjust to each other. I think they resolve things by talking them out. I know that's a boring answer haha but I do think that they'd talk about it and like... hire a house cleaner, put laundry baskets in convenient places, keep each other aware on cases, etc etc
7: Who makes the first move?
JJ! I think that (a) Emily would never make the first move because she could never be 100% sure that JJ felt the same and she's always prioritize their friendship over any need for romance and (b) JJ wouldn't be open to dating until she was ready, so she would ask Emily out when she felt comfortable and ready to be the person Emily deserves.
9: If they get married, who proposes and how does it go?
Emily! Once she's comfortable in the relationship, Emily would want to Nail. That. Down. She's gonna put a ring on it for sure for sure for sure lmao
I think she gets the team to help plan something special. Like they have a bar night with everyone and then go home and it's been decorated and Emily proposes in the living room and JJ says yes of course and is crying and the team comes it like "wooooo! Thank god you didn't say no we were all outside" lmaooo

If Jemily not in love why make JJ hallucinate Emily when she was at the worst moment of her life?
Literally
Actually
If Jemily not in love why do they drop everything as soon as they hear the other person's name???

criminal minds episodes i want but we're never gonna get:
documentary episode
musical episode
episode where someone makes cookies for the bau but accidentally gives them weed cookies instead of regular ones and high bau shenanigans occur
-🐙
Okay, but doc and musical are top tier esp in the early 2000s and I'm SO mad that they didn't do them 😭 imagine an Emily-centered tragic musical episode like the grey's one??? Hello???
Also an documentary and/or an episode from the locals' pov. Just to see how weird the BAU actually is lmaoo
I think a drunk episode would have been so so funny lmao like the parks and rec one!!

if the cm writers ever decide to give emily a gf, i'm obviously rooting for jemily or temily but i do believe it would be infinitely funnier if they cast danielle savre as emily's gf and (a) nobody ever says anything about emily's gf looking like jj's twin or (b) everyone pointing out the similiarities between danielle and jj and emily being like "i don't see it"
i've been binge reading your fanfics btw and omg i absolutely adore your writing
haha It would be super funny for Emily to end up with someone who looks just like JJ, but also I love the idea of her meeting a local on a case and doing a long distance relationship (like JJ and Will) and then the woman comes to visit and everyone is like "wait. we knew you were secretly dating someone, but a woman?? actually, that tracks" lmao
WAIT
Emily with a hot masc NB lmao
(thank you! That's really nice!)

JJ being really confident in her sapphic identity since college vs Emily repressing her attraction to women due to her upbringing where she always felt like she needed to become someone else to fit in
When Emily joins the BAU JJ flirts with her cause she gets the gay vibe which sends Emily into an identity crisis because she finds JJ so attractive and gets all flustered and is like shit, this is how its supposed to be and JJ helps her through all the internalised homophobia and stuff
Okay, but I actually have an idea saved where Emily is closeted and/or doesn't know she's gay yet!
I love the idea of Emily being so tightly wound and desperate to please her mother that she straight up won't admit she's gay. JJ, on the other hand, raised herself, so she's just like "yeah, I'm gay lmao what about it?"
She flirts with Emily (but obvi respects her boundaries) until Emily finally breaks and just kisses JJ and is like "I think I'm gay!" and JJ is like "yay!"
of course, Emily would still have to work through a lot and JJ still has her fear of commitment and vulnerability. I think it'd be interesting to explore how JJ is openly gay, but very closeted with her feelings and Emily is nervous about breaking the "rules" and loving a woman, but she's also interested in talking and exploring her feelings.

Have you considered that the reason Emily mirrors people so much is that after spending so long undercover and shoving down Emily so she could realistically be Lauren, that she has forgotten exactly who Emily is, and that it’s not until she’s with the BAU that she’s able to rediscover who she is, who she wants to be, what she actually likes, etc?
While I understand the importance of Lauren, I feel like an undue weight is given to her undercover mission. It's because of her ability to mirror that she's able to be Lauren so convincingly. Throughout the series, we see Emily struggle to cope with what she's done as Lauren and what she knows she's capable of doing again, which leads me to believe that she was in her own mind during her mission and not disassociating to the point of being another person.
Emily uses her experience as a mirror to reflect what Doyle wants to see and gain his confidence through that. She doesn't entirely disappear as a person. The fact that she feels guilty for her actions and takes responsibility of Declan shows that she sees herself as bring present during that time, which adds more depth to her character overall. If she could just write off her behavior as being someone else (Lauren), then she wouldn't have to grapple with that darkness inside herself.
She was also acting as a mirror well before going undercover. I think Emily has two sides - the goth girl who wears a costume, gets pregnant, tells her boss to fuck off and the well-mannered Ambassador's daughter who knows exactly what to say to passing Senators, knows how to behave to win friends, compartmentalizes perfectly. She has always molded her identity to fit the situation she's in.
Although, even her devil may care attitude is a mirror. She greets the Senator, asks about her kids, promises to pass a hello to her mother and then goes into Hotch's office and says she hates politics and would never participate. She's the perfect ambassador's daughter for the senator and then plays perfectly for Hotch. He wants to see an agent who cares more about integrity than her job and that's what Emily gives him.
She has sex as a teenager and gets pregnant and says fuck the rules, but she does it because she knows what teenage boys want. She wants to stay friends with Johnny, so she has sex with him and it leads to pregnancy. At the same time she's throwing care to the wind, she's reflecting what the people around her want her to be.
She goes on a date in The Big Game and mentions her interest and calls the date ruined. Either she's overthinking her performance, or she was trying to be a specific image for her date, and the reference was out of character. Even when she talks to Derek, she's mirroring his behavior. A big goofy smile, quoting lines back at him, acting impressed that he knows the book. She's realized that her earlier mistake can be a boon in this conversation. He's also the one to ask if she's okay, and she chooses to return the same energy by telling him. It may be a moment of opening up, but it also gains her favor and helps her integrate into the team.
Have you considered that Emily Prentiss is a mosaic of mirrors, and she always plays a part because she knows she could shatter at any moment?

based off of what’s shown in actual CM alone when would you say that emily developed feelings for jj and vice versa. did emily just have the hots for jj as soon as she saw her in hotch’s office which later changed into adoration when she spent time with her? which all went to shit when she saw jj and will together and then henry so she gave up on all possibilities. what about for jj?
I think Emily is interested in getting to know JJ better after their orientation, but it grows into affection pretty quickly. In the first season or so, Emily develops a real crush. Like by Doubt, Emily is fully interested in kissing JJ on the mouth hahaha the attraction was always there, but I see Emily as someone who needs feelings to think about sleeping with someone or dating. I think she would have dated JJ, if JJ had asked by the end of season 2 tbh
For JJ, I think she's fascinated by Emily immediately. She's so interested in her and wants to learn all about her. I think her feelings are pretty strong by the end of season 2, and that's what scares her. By No Way Out 2, she's for sure falling in love. That's what pushes her toward Will imo. She needs to protect herself and be with someone she doesn't like so intensely. Unfortchie, she gets pregnant.

How do you think JJ would take care of Emily/show her love?
Oooh
JJ would make sure Emily sleeps. I think that's a big one. Even if JJ is going to stay up and work, Emily needs to sleep. She needs to eat, drink water, and rest.
JJ would also buy books she sees that she thinks Emily would like. She sends emails with interesting articles attached. She schedules Emily to go to conferences and talks without asking because she knows Emily will be interested. She always gets Emily the hotel room with the best view.
At home, she makes Emily's coffee every morning - a mug to have at home and a thermos to take to work. If she buys lunch or coffee during the day, she always gets Emily some.
JJ also leaves little notes in Emily's case files haha

on JJ and touch.
I’ve thought about this. And I think the thing is she actually loves touch. Like when she’s falling apart she needs touch to ground her to reality. Especially being held.
but looking like she does, growing up where she did, working in her job… in her life she’s been touched in so many ways without her consent so being touched became difficult. But like with Pen the first time she hugged JJ when they first met, she asked. She said “I’m a hugger, can I hug you?” And it felt nice and JJ remembered why she likes hugs. And then with Emily, every touch was comforting to the point she sought it out.
Then touch became like a litmus test for people lol. Does she shrink away from contact—or find herself wanting to keep a hug brief— or does she feel comforted by it.
I absolutely love this!
This plays into my autistic JJ headcanon, too haha Like I always felt like physical touch burned me when it was from the wrong person or like made my skin crawl. I think she has the same sort of thing and she decides if she can trust people based on how her skin reacts to their trust.
Like Penelope feels safe and cool when she touches JJ and they can totally do anything and JJ feels safe. Emily gives JJ the good kind of goosebumps and feels safe and warm and it's so nice. She never has an issue with Emily touching her.
