Why I think Russell Adler is going to make a comeback in COD 2024

WARNING⚠️: Contains spoilers for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

Disclaimer: This is all just speculation on my behalf of course. I've just tried piecing stuff together for fun because Russ is one of my fave BO characters even though he's a bitch but i need more Adler content stat. <33

Let's get into it peeps. HEAR ME OUT.

Buckle up. Gonna be one hell of a ride folks 🤪

We'll start off with some random/background info.

Russ was born on February 12th 1937 so that would make him 53/54 in the Gulf War era. This actually isn't that old because if you think about it, Woods was about to turn 51 in 1981 during the Cold War campaign. What's a few more years?

We last saw Adler in action post-campaign in Warzone 1.0 cinematics but we've been kept in the dark about Adler's whereabouts post-1984 (after being brainwashed and killing Stitch LOL).

This meanie in a beanie wasn't forgotten about, oh no. He appears in the new cinematic intros on startup for both MWII (2022) and MWIII (2023). See below:

He was also featured twice in the 20 year anniversary video for Call of Duty whereas COD Ghosts didn't even get an appearance (ouch): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eL_w5HmxsPI

I personally believe Adler was a great addition to the Black Ops roster and is essentially the new Black Ops 'cover boy' now. Would be such a shame and a missed opportunity not to include a character like him in the upcoming COD. One who is morally grey, does whatever he deems necessary to get the job done - a bit like Cpt. Price in MW. Got the COD fans riled up about him brainwashing and pulling the trigger on Bell too - he's already got the spotlight in both a good and bad way.

Now, let's explore my main reasoning as to why I think Mr Shades 2.0 is most likely coming back in late 2024...

🎖️First up: Gulf War mission list 🔫

Here are some of the campaign missions that will be featured in Black Ops Gulf War. Obviously, this is subject to change, however, going off what we have, look closely...

I took the following snippet from this official article.

From this, we know there will be a huge focus on the CIA and who's a CIA clandestine special officer? Mhm, you guessed it - Russell Adler.

Now, according to the events of BO2, it's evident which characters have the possibility of returning out of our original BO trio - Jason Hudson, Frank Woods and Alex Mason.

💫 Alex is presumed dead after Frank shot him so he's out the picture in '90/91 until 2025 when they canonically meet again.

🪵 Woods would be in his 60s during this time too so I'll let you decide whether that's too old for him to be in GW.

Edit: Woods got SPAS-12'd in the kneecaps on Dec 20th 1989 by Raul Menendez so uh...yeah

🧊 Hudson died on Dec 20th 1989 at the hands of Raul Menendez.

➡️ Gulf War being a direct sequel to Cold War and what that could mean 💉

That brings me onto the rest of the safehouse crew. Since GW is a direct sequel to CW, it would make sense for some characters to carry over if possible:

We, as the player/Bell, get to choose whether Park or Lazar die (or both lovebirds) in 'End of the Line'. It's highly unlikely they'll return unless the devs make one decision canon maybe.

There could be a chance we see Sims again given his bond with Adler (Da Nang etc.), his age (late 40s in GW) and his status (alive).

That leaves the man himself, Russ. Everything from his age to the fact he's CIA and was the deuteragonist in COD 2020's campaign just makes sense for him to have at least a lil cameo or even a larger role, don't you think?

📱Finally: Hints from official posts 🔎

This post from Call of duty's official Instagram account kind of sealed the deal for me.

Oh lookie - they dropped syringe-lover's famous line in a zombies post. Why would COD just drop it so casually like that without a reason and years after since CW came out? They could've said absolutely anything else but no, this was purposeful.

How he's only in one game is beyond me. Won't get a character like him ever again. Seems like a cliché war dude at first glance but dig a little deeper into the details of the CW campaign, peel back the layers and get into his psychology and WOWZERS.

Am I delusional? Most definitely.

But the possibility he might be returning...that little bit of hope is enough for me and i won't shut up about it.

This will age horribly if he isn't in GW. Forgive me for feeding your delusions too in that case. Please?

Woods

He didn't mean to be to hard on you, you were just not paying attention and almost got killed. He was scared. Woods did everything he could to protect you and you still just didn't listen, he had to scold you. But now he's regretting it. Adler was the one who noticed, he seen how you would nervously look at woods and then look away quickly like a scared child, how you would make sure he wasn't talking to you and did your best to hide yourself from him. When woods noticed he felt horrible, and tried his best to talk to you but it was hard. When he finally learned why he corner you to apologize, he had to or he'd never live it down and feel guilty for the rest of his life.

Valerie

She's hard on people, everyone knows this. She isn't nice, or caring towards people. Of course you were at expectation, in private of course but still everyone could tell she was nicer to you and cared more about you, until she scolded you about something small. She didn't notice, like woods. And it wasn't until you wouldn't come to bed, she waited and waited for what felt like an eternity but you never came. She finally got you down to her office to talk to you and she could see how you struggled at first, this was the first time she was genuinely patient with someone. Valerie let you calm down then talk, then she felt like shit. First she didn't notice her own boyfriend feels upset and scared of her and now she's realizing she made you have to remember bad childhood memories? She felt horrible and made sure to make it up to you.

Gaz

Now Gaz isn't one to yell at people, or scold, just anything like that in general. It's usually Price. But Gaz was scared and worried and it just it happened because you were being reckless, yes, Gaz loves you, but God you scare him sometimes. After he had scolded you he went straight to his room to calm down and if price can notice that Gaz is upset, he can notice you too. While Price was taking to Gaz you were no where to be seen, which would have worried Gaz but he currently was focused on Price and his emotions. After Price was done talking Gaz sent out to find you, but he couldn't find you. It wouldn't have worried him if soap didn't run up to him asking where you were. Now the fear hit him. He spent the whole time looking high and low for his beloved boyfriend worried something happened to him. When he found you, he crushed you in a hug, apologizing. He didn't let you talk more focused on getting his apologize out there. He never found out about your past due to his apologizing.

König

He felt bad a second after he scolded you. You wouldn't even get a chance to leave as the bad memories flooded your head, König pulled you into a hug directly after and apologized for scolding you and how he was just scared. He could tell you were still upset and you explained how you can take time away from but he needs you to know that he's sorry, he really is, he'd be upset too if someone scolded him like a child. If you did avoid him after his apologize, it'd hurt him but he wouldn't try and stop you. Instead watching you from afar sadly until you came back to him.

Ghost

Now Ghost he's done some scolding and he never feels bad for the person be scolded. Same goes for you. He wouldn't scold someone for no reason, so he'd just watch you avoid him and honestly he'd probably make it worst. Mainly because he'd think your only avoiding him because he scolded you, not because of the past. So eventually he'd corner you and tell you that you shouldn't avoid him because of a little scolding and to get over it since it wasn't a harsh scolding. Which might make the simulation worst. Soap would came to Ghost a few minutes later, pissed off. Soap would process to yell at Ghost in his heavy Scottish accent about how bad he hurt you and accidentally say why Ghost hurt you so bad. And no soap wouldn't let him talk. Ghost would wait for you to finally come around him so he can apologize.

Abby is the Daughter of David Mason and Alice Johnson. She was born and raised in an environment full of fun and love. She had a great childhood. But the sad thing is due to her parents job she didn't see them very recently. David in the military and Alice working in the hospital.

But she stayed the majority of her days with the one and only Frank Woods. While her parents worked she was raised by Woods, like he did with David before. She has her best memories with that old man. He taught her a lot of things and told her a lot of stories too.

She loved that old man.

She had an amazing youth until she was 13. One night while visiting Woods in The Vault. They had a strange visit. After all that happened, Menéndez appeared again. Ready to get his revenge for what Woods did years ago. The poor kid didn't know what to do but look. Until suddenly Menéndez aimed a gun at her and shot. She hit the ground holding her chest while she started to bleed out.

Woods couldn't do anything because in the blink of an eye, he got stabbed in the throat with a knife. Abby just could lay there, bleeding out, begging, screaming, witnessing how Menéndez killed the man that practically raised her.

That affected her enormously, and she never was the kid she was once.

Personality:

She was practically raised by Woods, so it's not a surprise that she got a few traits from him. She has a strong personality, not afraid to say what's in her mind, it doesn't matter if she's talking with the fucking president Bosworth herself.

It's hard to gain her trust, she's reluctant and even rude to strangers. But when it comes to friends and family she's pure joy and kindness, she leaves her mean shell aside and she jokes around (usually dark humour), laughs, giggles...

"Abs swears like a sailor but has the imagination of a five year old" - Woods.

She has a really strong bond with her family, it's everything to her, so she would and will do everything for her family.

So it's better not to mess with her but if you earn her trust she will show you that little kid inside her.

Trivia:

Abby is left-handed

Her name was chosen by Woods, he knew that if his Friend Mason would have a daughter would name her Abigail. So in honour of his memory David and Woods named her like that.

She's Allergic to seafood

She doesn't like sweets and is a huge fan of spicy food. Although the next day she will feel as if she has been hit by a truck.

She has one of Woods' tattoos to honour his memory, although she feels a little bit shy when she has to talk about it.

She swears more than she talks. (She spent too much time with old Woods)

Loves talking and reading about space and astronomy. One of her dreams was to become an astronaut.

Wears silly socks with silly patterns.

Although she was raised by a lieutenant commander and an ex-CIA agent, she has a really anarchical mentality. She doesn't believe in rules or the government and she's not afraid to "debate" it.

Just finished Cold War's campaing for the first time and wow wow wow. What an amazing game.

The story, the characters, the dialogue choices, the graphics, it all comes together so nicely to make such an amazing experience. The puzzles in the side missions were a really nice touch, and I went up looking up and down the levels trying to not miss any bit of evidence.

Being able to customize our character at the beggining and select some perks was a nice touch. Helps to make us feel more connected to Bell as a character.

The callbacks to events and characters of Black Ops 1 were so well done. I really liked how they neatly managed to connect the events of the two games together, and how they showed the impact Dragovich, Kravchenko and Steiner kept having after the events of BO1.

Look at them. My traumatized and perfect babyboys with so many decades of ptsd on them. Love them so much.

Loved seeing the returning faces and the new cast. Wished we could have gotten more interactions with them though. I am totally not shipping Bell and Park. Not at all. I promise.

Got the ending with Perseus and cause im a lover of all things angst, this was such a tragic and powerful ending. I'm excited to replay and see how all the endings vary. And I knew I was right to not give Addler the lighter in the end lol

Only complain I have is that I felt the campaign was a bit short, which limits how much we get to interact with the characters and other things like seeing more of Bell's connection with Perseus, but given the difficulties Treyarch had during development due to Covid, it's understandable. But the content that is there is pretty amazing.

Overall, loved the game very much and I totally reccomend it.
