I have Clip Studio and Corel Painter Essentials 7 installed on my computer, both came added in a thing with my art tablet. I used Clip Studio for a while (mostly for the brushes, cause I stole them for Firealpaca lol) but I'm sure the license for that has run out already, I haven't opened it in a couple of years.

As for Corel Painter, it's free (from what I remember) but it would crash my computer every time I'd try to use it, I think it's too big for my computer. I honestly don't know why I haven't uninstalled it... I think it's one of those things where it's like "But what if I could use it one day" thing.

7. A medium of art you don’t work in but appreciate?

Markers, specifically Copic markers. I have a few of them but couldn't ever really get the hang of it...

I saw your advice on art (different anon here) what brushes in CSP do you use for hair and skin? I want to learn to render them properly but I don't know where to start. Sorry to be a bother!

Hello there! You're not a bother, I promise!

I've been using these brushes by Magda Proski for years now. My favorite is the one called Magda's. I use that one for almost everything because depending on the pressure you apply, it can be a soft or a hard brush, so it's very versatile. For the hair, for example, I outline and color it with the Magda's, then I add highlights, shadows, and texture with the Flat Brush and Hair Brush.

It's a pretty complete set, and if I remember right, it's free! Worth giving a try.

The other set I've been using for a long loooong time is this one by Herssian. They're the main reason I kept using Photoshop all these years, to be honest. PS brushes can be imported to CSP from last year, so I no longer use PS but I still render all my drawings with them.

I don't have a public WIP advanced enough to show you every stage of the process, but I'll let you some examples.

This would be my first stage: lines are clean (I always start working with this kind of lineart even when I'm going for a lineless painting) and I already have the flat color for his skin.

Then, using Herssian's #3, Magda's or any ther hard brush I start outlining or painting (usually in the same layer, but you can add another one if you're not confident enough yet) the shape of the face attending to where the light source comes from.

Once you have the shapes of the face ready, it's time to start blending. In my case, I use the Corel Painter Brush by Brian Allen. I also use this one for hair, sometimes lineart, details... together with Magda's and Herssian #3 (you can also use those two for blending); it's one of my essential brushes for everything. I play around with their opacity and the eyedropper tool until I'm satisfied with the result. I prefer keeping noticeable brushstrokes.

After that, I add freckles, skin texture, scars, or whatever detail I need to add to the drawing, and once I finish with that, I start working on the lightning of the scene, cast shadows, etc.

I also recommend this tutorial by KauriArt, which was very helpful for me back in the day when I started trying to figure out how to paint and render. And this video by EricAnthonyJ (their brushes are amazing too) about how to paint skin.

make way for curiosity vomit. when you first transitioned to digital art, what tools+tablet did you pick first? was there no transition & your first drawing a digital one? was it shitty, the tool you started with, or did it have a charm, or maybe you're still using the same one today? did you have to upgrade in order to do more with your art? by the way, your art really makes me smile :)

Oh man, first thank you for the compliment! This is another fun one, I'll try to be concise with my answers!

1) I started out with a 5+ yr old desktop my parents gave me, a Wacom bamboo drawing tablet, and Corel Painter Essentials (came free with the tablet lol). My dad actually bought the tablet for work but gave it to me after deciding he didn't like it. Super grateful for that!

2) I started out traditional as a tiny kid and switched to digital around the end of middle school! I still do traditional art because I like the tactile feel of it.

3) They weren't shitty (aside from the desktop lol), just simplistic! I have a friend who does game art and he uses a similar small tablet like the one I started with. At a certain point, it's less about how fancy the tools are (assuming everything's functioning) and more about what you prefer to work with.

4) I did have to upgrade when I got to college because I needed more processing power for the animation-work-related software we used. So yes in a sense that you can't practice using tools you don't have, but my drawing ability didn't spike because of it--- if you draw often then it'll do that regardless! The advantage of digital art is how much you can streamline your workflow and skip the more tedious parts.
