“Anyway,” Evan says, leaning back in his seat. “I just thought you meant, like, right now. Like, let’s steal a helicopter and fly to Vegas.”
Tommy laughs again, his nervousness bubbling out of him. “Sure.”
“What? It’s not a terrible idea.”
Tommy looks at him, searching his face. There’s something sincere in the look in his bright blue eyes, but then again, that’s not new. Evan wears his heart on his sleeve. Tommy makes himself take a deep breath, counting to four before he exhales just as slowly. His head is spinning. Maybe ordering that second drink wasn’t such a good idea after all. “You’re not kidding, are you?”
Evan shrugs. “To answer your question,” he says, deflecting. “I think I would like to get married someday, actually. But I mean… sometimes it’s kind of just a−a formality, isn’t it?” He pauses for a second, but Tommy waits, knowing better than to interrupt his train of thought. “Maddie and Chim actually got married because their accountant told them to. But they already had a kid together, and they bought a house together...” He shrugs again, then looks up at Tommy, meeting him in the eye, that soft smile appearing once again. “Anyway, I’m− I like the idea.”
