Q&A with Aleksandra Remy!
Abode: Song of Darkness | SCN&KCD&KFS | RC ·
Tumblr media
Dear friends!
We are pleased to present you an article with Aleksandra’s answers to our questions.
We also remind you about Aleksandra’s telegram channel, where she often answers questions from subscribers and gives us a lot of new information: Party at Remy’s ✨
Let's not wait too long... Let's start with questions about the story of “Kali: The Flame of Samsara”!🔱
Question: Will there be a strong reaction from the already chosen favorites in the story to Devi's marriage? Maybe someone will get into a fight?) Christian has a difficult character, this is already clear, and perhaps he will provoke? And, for example, the same Ram is burning with the desire for the lord to see “traces of kisses”...
“He imagined how others, especially the lord, noticed these marks on Devi. And I myself didn’t understand where this sinister pleasure came from...” - Season 1 Episode 7 scene with Ram in his chambers.
Answer: Jealousy, anger - of course. But everyone understands that it is impossible to openly protest, this promises problems or even death, and each hero has responsibility for their family. They need to use circumstances to their advantage through tactics, and not fight with... the ocean?.. elements, against which it is useless to fight alone. Manipulation or secret duels are closer to the truth.
And deliberately making your fiancée’s secret lover jealous, so that he freaks out and stumbles - a very dirty move, it sounds fucking fun, I like it.
From the administration: It seems to us that when Alexandra was writing the answer to this question, lightning began to strike outside the window, and the peals of thunder mixed with her ominous laughter...
Question: When should we expect branches to close? And will it be possible to combine some branches (with consequences) after closing?
Answer: Closing branches will be in the next update, BUT! they can be combined for the time being. However, you should be careful, the characters will notice all your glances/smiles... (no deterioration so far)
Question: Christian gave a tiger, and Devi in a blue robe finally looked like Jasmine from the cartoon “Aladdin” - was that intended? Or is this a coincidence?
Tumblr media
Cartoon "Aladdin" 1992
Answer: Partly. It seems to me that I included Jasmine somewhere in the TK, as a ref. For the hairstyle, probably, but it was one of many, and more or less reflected my idea in the sketch. But in general, everything else is a coincidence, the tiger was chosen as a beautiful detail of the Indian setting and an analogy with the goddess Durga on a tiger. And shades of blue are the color of the Sharma family.
Question: Will we return to the topic of murders in the residence?
Answer: This is part of the cornerstone of the plot. As in KCD and Nile, the plot will be multi-stage. One, two, three... and it's all connected.
Question: Should we hope for flashbacks with favorites in a five-year period of time?
Answer: There will be few of them. The purpose of the time-skip was rather to show the transformation of Devi herself, and already on this basis, her relationship with Li's began to develop differently... in an adult way.
Remember what she said in the first updates? She was youthfully radical on some issues or very shy about any intimacy. But age, power and passion liberate her, force her to think and act in a new way. I will show this through interactions with Li in the past, but they will be few. I don't want to linger.
Question: Will the phenomenon of Devi's glowing eyes be revealed by Ram's touch?
Answer: You will see everything for yourself. As usual, we enter the abyss of events from afar.
Tumblr media
Question: Why does Ram take marriage so lightly? As if it’s just to drink water - “They’re getting married, nothing special,” and the same Kamal is still keeping his distance.
They are so different...
Answer: Ram knows that he will probably be married to someone with whom it is beneficial to form an alliance. This is part of the system, which is useless to go against, and he does not understand for whom and why. Due to his outlook on things, Ram is not sure that he can fall in love with someone at all. The same Amrit had the only hope - his betrothed, his equal. The only one. Ram doesn't have such a person, so he doesn't care - what difference does it make? This one or that one... they all look at him the same way. And Devi is far from the worst option for an arranged marriage. Smart, influential, beautiful, and most importantly busy, she will not have time to hang on to him - that’s how he sees it. Another question is how Ram will feel about marriage if he really falls in love. He had never loved anyone before.
Kamal is a completely different person. He will marry only the one in whom he sees a companion, with whom he wants to walk hand in hand all his life. He does not lose hope of meeting the one, but at the same time, marriage is NOT the primary task for him. All his life Kamal was the head of the family and a kshatriya, a warrior, his past is rich in a variety of events. He is much more interested in business, work, politics. He is not looking for a bride and does not make marriage his goal, relying on chance or fate. And I'm also not ready to marry just anyone, if my wife is the best and most beloved.
But he also has obligations, sooner or later they will take their toll. If Kamal never loves anyone, he will be forced to marry a worthy girl just to continue the family line.
Question: Does Christian have personal motives for marrying Devi or is it only a political component that plays a role?
Answer: He really liked her on the field, this is the effect of the first impression. He arrived in the country secretly, did not know or see anything, and, moreover, to a post fraught with danger. And then, in the middle of the night, an Indian aristocrat falls into a field nearby, walking without permission and in men's clothing... walking by herself... at night?.. and with a dagger. He remembered her :)
The new meeting only strengthened his confidence and desire to marry her. Is Christian achieving some kind of goal through this marriage? Without doubt. Does he do this solely out of dry calculation? I think not.
Question: Why is it difficult for Kamal to accept the fact that Devi has grown up and despite the fact that he begins to feel for her, he shuns her?
Answer: Kamal has a difficult past, he tries to control himself and not interfere with rash passion in his relationship with Devi. This can ruin everything, confuse everything, and his main task is to put her on her feet, as his deceased friend would have wanted. Moreover, the task that Kamal is performing at the moment goes far beyond simple politics. It helps a woman gain independence, and independence this is a huge step for that time.
Everything is complicated with Devi, because he has known her for a long time, and is not used to looking at her with that look. Kamal wants to know if this is really the one. Giving in to feelings easily is not always a good idea. Kamal is a passionate, sensual man, and he has made many mistakes due to his passionate nature (we are not talking about sex or relationships here). Age has taught him to think first, then do.
Now it’s time for a question about the story of “Kali: Call of Darkness”….
Question: Just hypothetically, could you write a sequel to the story of Kali: Call of Darkness? Somewhere Ratan’s eye twitched and, most likely, yours
Tumblr media
Answer: In some distant hypothetical Universe, the maximum I would dare to do is a couple of episodes on the topic “this is how things are going with your ending,” and then a couple because it won’t fit into one. Maybe one. Or maybe none.
Time for the Song of the Crimson Nile story!
Question: Isman is depicted on the poster of the second season for a reason?
Tumblr media
Answer: There is nothing “just like that”
Question: A question that worries a huge number of players after this update. Amen is clearly not a virgin, but judging by the text, he didn’t love anyone before Eva?
Answer: He didn't love anyone romantically.
Question: Does Seth have a preference - does he prefer necromancy or oneiromancy?
Answer: It's like choosing between beer or wine. It is different, but the heart lies with both. Or choose between your favorite genres of music, between your children, and so on.
The block of questions and answers on stories is completed, but that’s not all...)
Question: How do you cope with such a workload? It’s very difficult to produce five episodes, and also keep an eye on the third story.
Answer: I don’t know, I think I’m used to it (and sleep a little less than other people). I have been gradually increasing my workload for the past two years; in stagnation, it’s hard and uninteresting for me, I’m going crazy. When it’s difficult, it’s very fun and exciting, you learn to do everything faster and better, and over time a lot of things come easier, it’s like a sport. Yes, it’s hard and the gears in my head sometimes creak, and sometimes I curse everything and want to run away from work. But there is no development in comfort, and I am a gambling person. Maybe this is destructive, I’m trying to slow myself down so that the attic doesn’t leak at all.
This is all wrong, probably, and we need to maintain a work/life balance, I’m really on the way to this...
Question: Was it nice to return to an already familiar setting and introduce players more deeply to the entire dozen?
Answer: Double feeling. I seem to already know everything here, and we went through it in the first Kali... but on the other hand, I still have something to say, there are ideas for visuals that will fit only under this setting, and a rich lore that needs to be revealed. Different scenes, decorations, clothes, and even a different prism of perception of the divine - in each story I try to look at this topic from a new angle.
And a big plus is that I didn’t have to waste time and timing on introducing players to the lore and setting. Everyone knows everything, it’s convenient! You can go straight to the plot.
Question: When will you have a full vacation, that is, will you rest until you give up your phone? Of course, we understand everything, the best rest is a change of activity, but still...
Answer: Full-fledged what-what?
In fact, I want to walk the pilgrimage path in Europe in the spring. I’m not kidding, I’ll give up everything for a month and leave... I hope. But it really is in my plans. For a whole month, just walk 800 km, alone with your thoughts and beautiful views around.
Question: What kind of creativity do you like the most from players? Art, processing, poetry? Or are you inspired by everything?
Answer: Artwork, edits, fanfiction, short sketches... a lot of things. I subscribe to the channels of some people from the Fandom, I read their posts and thoughts in order to be on the same wavelength with the players and feel their impact. Among them there are artists, FF authors, and simply active players or thematic channels.
This is very motivating, it helps to look at the story from the reader’s point of view, and not from the developer’s. I remind myself why and for whom I am trying in the first place. It doesn't allow me to be lazy :)
That's all, friends, we thank Alexandra for her answers and you for paying attention to us!
With love, your Abode.

hi 🥹🫶 ily. i have a question for riptide; is the "Price calls it, has known since Mesaieed" part meaning that price had speculated that one of the guys would eventually hook up with Nile? or that he suspected one of the guys was already with Nile? im sry. im kind of dumb lol. hope it's ok to ask 🫶
hi, op!!! no worries at all and you can def ask whatever you want! 🖤
there is more to it, but i was worried it was getting too big for tumblr, so i cut a lot of it out. i posted the full version on AO3 but never got around to adding it here as i wasn't sure if anyone would care since it's just ?? extra?
but here it is:
—Price calls it, has known since Mesaieed. He'd bet on Gaz, maybe even Soap. It never crosses his mind to think of Simon. And then the building is on fire. No way out. He's never seen Simon snap at the men around him, demanding answers. He shoves a militant into the wall, knife against his jugular. His voice gravel. He uses torture and interrogation tactics to get you out alive.
—then he cracks a joke when they listen to you and Gaz gasp, and wheeze, the fumes close to smothering you both on the line. A live feed to your deaths. It jars them all. Sits with them. They’ll carry it, Price knows. But no one will shoulder it all more than him.
—Soap doesn't need to be asked. He springs, gear already on. Price follows suit.
—get them outta there! is the bellow that follows.
—and then the plane. He looked his comrade in the eye, and saw a warning: don't.
—you walked away, and Simon's stare didn't leave your back. Don't, indeed. He wonders if it was meant more for himself.
—gone. Dunno where. Just… gone. It's all they had. Phone calls unanswered. Line dead. Signal wiped from the grid.
—sent on a mission… went a little… sideways. That's all Shepherd says. He'd seen Simon lose people. Saw his own choice get someone killed—many people killed. A hazard in this line of duty. Watched him shoulder the blame and become colder. Distant. A lone wolf. He'd never seen him this angry before.
—not good enough!
—he's a soldier first. The mission comes, it's shelved. They carry the brunt of you with them but they focus. Dutiful. Price doesn't bring up the hole in the wall, the perfect replica of Simon's fist.
—and then: alive, Laswell breathes. In the hospital. An injury. Got shot. Simon's eyes don't waver from the report. From Laswell. Something breaks.
—it’s Soap who says, I’ll kill him.
—An inch. That’s all. Ghost stands from the table; the first to leave.
(on the table, his glass sits. a crack running down the middle.)
—where are you headed?
—Simon's gaze didn't leave the window. Wales.
—when Price looks down, his phone shows a map to Porthmadog.
—here, he hands him a set of keys. Got a Jeep stowed in Cardiff. Will get you there quicker.
—he'd have bet money on everyone but Simon. But thinking about it now, it was obvious from the start.
("Sierra Leone. Wanna take Gaz with you–"
"No. I'll take the rookie.")
basically, the reaction from Ghost when Nile and Gaz were locked in the building in Mesaieed made him start to put the pieces together! 🖤

Thank you so much for answering my ask, and also the imagine with it was so lovely! I’m so happy you’re taking requests too - your writing is brilliant. I should probably say major spoilers for Death on the Nile in this if anyone hasn’t watched it yet! I had an idea where it was the reader who was shot in Death on the Nile instead of Bouc, except it’s non-fatal (maybe Jacqueline had bad aim and hit her in the leg or something) and it’s Poirot’s reaction to that - he’s torn between apprehending the culprit and taking care of her. I imagine Bouc would urge him to stay with her, and Poirot would be furious about her getting hurt.
Thanks for requesting, dear!! Love it, I wanted to do it a bit longer but I opted for a shorter version, hope you won't mind 🥰
Worried sick

◇ Pairing: Hercule Poirot X platonic!Reader
◇ Warnings: you can see it as romantic or platonic honestly, wounds, blood, gun, roughness, fainting
◇ Summary: You get shoot while on the Nile with your friend Hercule Poirot and he freaks out.
◇ Note: Sorry for the mistakes and the English.
Tumblr media
The excruciating pain didn't make you think properly, things around you were blurry as soon as your eyes landed on the gunshot wound.
As soon as you woke up, you found yourself on the sofa in the room you were in, they had already taken care of your wound which fortunately wasn't too serious but enough to be felt and cause a dramatic reaction from your friend Hercule Poirot.
He was a calm and calculating man most of the time, although he had moments like that—messy hair and clear concern in his eyes as he paced the room as Bouch tried to reassure and calm him down.
It took you a couple of minutes to be able to sit up and inspect the fresh wound, which was now covered by a band
"Geez, luckily they had a bad aim or I was 7 feet under the ground right now" you murmured, half joking half serious, jumping slightly when your friend rushed to you to grab your shoulder in a rough way.
"What were you thinking?!" Poirot exclaimed, his accent way heavier than usual "You could have get killed! I told you to be careful" he added quickly, shaking your shoulders as he thought at a way to keep you same for the rest of the 'journey'.
He needed to interrogate you first, to understand more and be able to take care of the person who had used the gun to hurt you.

Which of your favourite books got bad adaptations? Do you feel Rwrb was a decent adaptation? How do you feel about the casting? What about a sequel? Hope it’s still honesty hour!
It's always honesty hour! A follow-up to this ask.
Answering the middle question first because I'm filled with chaos: I do think the RWRB film was overall a good adaption! There were parts of the book I missed desperately (June obviously, but also Liam and Raf my beloveds) and things about it that I would have preferred to be different, but I have criticisms of the book too which don't stop me loving it, and overall I really enjoyed the film. I thought the casting was fantastic, very impressed with TZP's ability to bring 'chaotic little shit' energy without actually being the short king of the book 🤣 and Nick did an excellent job with Henry. There's a lot going on in the book, and I do think streamlining it for a film was a smart move, even if it meant we lost some amazing stuff.
Regarding a sequel... I'd rather no sequel than a bad sequel, and while I trust Casey with their characters, approaching something film-first does wind up with a different structure to a novel that's turned into a film, the third-act misunderstandings that I hate, etc. I'd rather they wrote another book that could then get adapted, but I'm aware that's the most unlikely approach to be taken lol. Also, based on some of the reactions to Henry's bonus chapter, people get very attached to their post-canon headcanons and I feel like a sequel runs the risk of being divisive. Like, I want a sequel because I want more of Alex and Henry, but I would not enjoy all the Discourse™️ it would inspire.
Favourite books with bad adaptions! I'm still bitter over The Lovely Bones a decade and a half later, though not as much as My Sister's Keeper lol. The Dark Tower can get in the fucking bin. Sometimes I think about how desperately teenage MJ wanted an Artemis Fowl adaption and then we got... that. 11.22.63 was actually a decent miniseries but I hated it as an adaption of one of my favourite Stephen King books. I wanted to like Death on the Nile but holy FUCK. Fucking... Justice League I almost walked out of the cinema. There are probably more that are fully blocked from my memory lmao.
[Honesty hour, ask me anything!]
*I realise opinions on the film and on the bonus chapter differ from mine. I respect those opinions, I will defend to the death your right to hold them, but I also, in the most respectful possible way, don't care and have no interest in debating them. I say this with all the love in the world, but also a desire to protect my peace.

More Lion Guard oc’s I have in my mind cuz I need to get it out
I know I talked about some oc’s in this post: https://www.tumblr.com/devilsrecreation/724739555112222720/you-know-how-i-mentioned-a-whole-tlg-fic-idea-with
BUT I CANNOT REST FOR I HAVE MADE MORE:
Jino (tooth)- Kenge’s oldest sibling who brings back some bad memories. He hasn’t changed since he was a hatchling and is the only animal who is able to call Kenge a “little lizard” without getting bitten, likely due to Kenge being secretly scared of him. It isn’t until he brings up Ushari (thinking he ditched Kenge, not knowing about his death) that Kenge finally stands up for himself and puts his brother in his place.
“Once a little lizard, always a little lizard”-Jino at Kenge
Voice claim: Peter Dinklage
Honestly, that would be a pretty good fanfic. Jino comes to visit and everyone in the Outlands gets to see a whole different side to Kenge. Like, he goes from an aggressive lizard with a Napoleon complex to just…freezing. And this surprises everyone cuz the Kenge they know would NEVER act like this. The most he’d do is get angry while Jino taunts him, orders him around, steals his food, and steps on his tail. Jasiri, being the good queen she is, tries to understand what Kenge’s going through, even trying to get the two brothers to get along. Kenge finally breaks after he witnesses Jino telling the others stories about their childhood. He tries to stand up to him, but Jino just laughs and calls him “little lizard”. Everyone thinks Kenge would snap and attack his brother, but merely lets out an angry yell and walks away. Jasiri chases after him, asking if he’s okay, then Kenge opens up about everything. After some encouragement from Jasiri and the skinks (and Jino mentioning Ushari), Kenge decides he’s had enough of his trauma haunting him and stands up to his eldest brother once and for all via pinning him to the ground and letting everything out. This sends Jino submitting to Kenge for once, apologizing, and running back home
-There would be numerous flashbacks and mini flashbacks from Kenge’s past throughout the fic: from meeting Ushari to biting his first victim
-We’d get to see Ushari’s reaction to everything as well (He hates Jino)
Maji (water)-A tough female nile monitor with no filter who can be just as aggressive as Kenge is. She has this sort of enemies to lovers relationship with him, with him being jealous that she’s bigger than he is. Slowly but surely, the mutual hatred turns into feelings the more they find out how alike they are and they become mates
Voice claim: Joan Cusack
-While Kenge claims to be the biggest lizard in the Outlands, Maji says she’s the biggest lizard in the Pridelands
-The rivalry starts when she steals Kenge’s food right in front of him, then when he tries to fight her, she pins him down
-From there, they always find ways to show off and one-up each other
-They end up having a bragging contest which ends in them going from yelling to aggressive kissing (whatever the lizard equivalent looks like)
-After a stupid amount of time processing their growing feelings for one another, they finally just confess and become the badass couple. Kenge has a soft spot for her
-Kenge was a stammering mess cuz he couldn’t find the right words when Maji just flat out told him
-Unlike her mate, she can control her anger and is usually the one to put Kenge in his place. It’s actually pretty easy for her, especially when he gets hostile for no reason. For example, he’ll get mad over someone saying “a little help” and Maji would yell at him, telling him to shut up and that it’s just an expression…and he actually listens!
-While Kenge has beef with Bunga, Maji would have beef with Binga
-After they start dating, Kenge (temporarily, as it’s a phase) becomes a completely different lizard. He’s much happier than normal and talks about Maji for hours. He even has this staring problem whenever he’s in the Pridelands. Meanwhile, Maji has become a lot more wistful and giggly
-They do the classic “that’s my girl/that’s my boyfriend!” with each other
-Maji tends to get really flirty with Kenge when they’re alone
Wakali (fierce)-It’s kind of a “what if” idea where Kiburi adopts a daughter and she becomes super badass
-Orphaned albino crocodile
-Backstory: Nduli finds her egg poking out of the dirt while searching for food and brings it to Kiburi. After trying to find its mother to no avail, Kiburi decides “screw it. I’ll take it in, but I’m not getting attached to it”. When it hatches, he names the new member Wakali
-Their relationship at first is like:
Kiburi: Leave me alone, kid.
Wakali: *cuddles Kiburi’s tail*
Kiburi: Okay, you’re my child now
-Daddy’s girl
-Wants to be taken seriously
-Calls the other crocs her uncles
Hatari (lethal)-You know how hippos are pretty much one of the most homicidal animals irl? That’s Hatari. Intimidating and territorial, he has a particular enmity towards crocodiles and devotes his life to getting rid of them since he sees them as feral, ruthless monsters. Although he claims to care about the circle of life, he doesn’t realize the roles crocodiles have in it and only thinks about himself in the matter (not even other hippos)
-He lives in a lake on the outskirts of the pride lands where everyone is warned not to go. There is a pile of food near it that he keeps all to himself
-Songs that fit him:
“Get Out” (Hello Neighbor song)-describes how territorial he is
“Bats” (MLP)-Basically his feelings towards crocs
-Is like this because he lost his entire pod to crocodiles and refuses to believe some are good
Piga (snap)-Kiburi’s dad. Although he was a bold, hardcore, stone-faced brute to others (think Terence from Angry Birds), he showed his soft side to his favorite son, Kiburi. Since the death of his mate, he swore to himself that he was going to teach his kids how to be the best and strongest they can be. Although he kinda gave Kiburi and his siblings some tough love, he genuinely cared about his son and let him know it when he died
-Kiburi gets a lot of his personality from him. Even some of the things he’s said came straight from his old man
“This is our watering hole now! We say when you can drink! And if you don't listen... Lemme show you what'll happen."
“We’re crocodiles. We don't wait around for other animals to tell us what to do! We take what we want”
“I say we deal with him the crocodile way!”
“Nothin' tastier than a meal with a sense of humor."
Yeah. All Piga. Now, don’t get me wrong, even though he was like this, he never dreamed of taking over the Pride Lands. He knew his place when it came to King Mufasa and never once challenged Pua to a mashidano
-He had a lot of battle scars on him, the most notable one being right next to his eye
-Second strongest crocodile (the first being Pua)
-Best friends with Pua
-Kind of a sore loser when it came to losing a fight, but would never take it out on any of his kids. He does appreciate Kiburi’s support about it
-He’s EXTREMELY stubborn. When it comes to getting him to budge, he is just like Terence. He doesn’t, no matter how hard you try. The only exception is a hippo if it’s strong enough (like, as big as/bigger than Basi and as strong as Beshe). Anyone else, forget it.
-Died from a hippo attack (Hatari), which happened to be right in front of Kiburi
-Could probably talk to Kiburi if Kiburi wanted/needed to. If so, he would appear as a water spirit
Nge (Scorpion)-Sumu’s straightforward, no nonsense, but otherwise loving mother. Speaking from personal experience, she’s the one who told Sumu that scorpions couldn’t be friends with anyone but each other. Although she loved all of her kids, she wasn’t afraid to smack them with reality if necessary, such as with Sumu wanting to make friends. After a young Sumu failed to do so, she had a little chat with him. The talk was disappointing and hard to hear, but he needed to hear it at the time. And Nge made sure to keep supporting him no matter what
-Nge taught Sumu everything he knows and she means the entire world to him.
-She was taken from Sumu and the rest of her kids by humans while Sumu could only watch in horror. Her last words to him were “If I don’t make it back, take care of yourselves”.
Sumu never saw her again.
-Nge’s theme is “Baby Mine” from Dumbo. If you sing the song, Sumu will burst into tears
-Sumu does eventually see her again and uh…let’s just say it isn’t pretty. To put in bluntly, she’s dead (obviously). Finish the puzzle.
-That being said, Sumu would be able to avenge his mother by stinging the humans who took her
-BUT if she miraculously survived, Sumu would be able to get her out of her little prison and it’d be a heartwarming reunion. She goes back to her little hole and goes her separate way, but not without telling Sumu how proud she is of him no matter if he is good or bad and promising to visit (he still gets to sting the humans tho lol)
“Ah kid, I wish the world was nicer to us scorpions…especially to you.”-Nge to a young Sumu
Voice claim: Wendi Malick (Eda Clawthorne from The Owl House)
New story idea: When their bosses scold them after messing up a plan AGAIN, Chungu, Cheezi, Goigoi, Tamka, and Nduli set out to prove themselves useful. It isn’t long before each of them are captured by poachers (which they call “two-leggers”) who plan to do god knows what. It’s up to them to try to escape and prove themselves useful to their leaders.
-Said leaders (Jasiri, Janja, Reirei, and Kiburi) learn about their friends being captured and go to rescue them…no matter how dangerous it is
They also feel super guilty about it cuz they each lost their tempers and said something along the lines of “Why can’t you guys do anything right?”
-We get to see how much the henchmen really mean to them
-More character depth on Sumu, as we learn the tragic tale about how he lost his mother (He’s got trauma and it shows)
Sumu comes with the leaders and acts as a bodyguard (It was Jasiri’s idea. She wanted to play it safe cuz nobody’s messing with a scorpion). He claims he’s fine, but his new habit of staring into space whenever humans are mentioned says otherwise
-It has a good ending though! The dumb henchmen manage to escape themselves (while the leaders are distracting the humans) and reunite with everyone

Dnd character concept I want to play at some point (usually I have a million I just drone to friends about rather than post to tumblr but I feel like the concept is like, appealing to some of the mutuals), longish post because the concept behind it involves a lot of talking about what I feel the nature cleric class can be (as a fun opinion and deffo not prescriptive)
So often there’s a question about why play a Nature Cleric instead of a Druid (mechanics aside) and also about why the Nature Cleric gets features like Heavy Armor proficiency seemingly at odds with the whole nature vibe
My thoughts on this are to remember that rather than being representative and of channeling nature, a nature cleric is channeling the way in which humanoid civilizations (those that would be worshiping a god) interact with nature, as a resource or something to seek sanctuary from.
Mountains, Seas, Forests and Plains as seen by the miner, fisherman, woodsman, hunter or farmer who prays to their gods for safety and bounty.
If you look at the class features a Nature Cleric gets and see them as Civilization’s Taming of Nature as opposed to a Druids representation of the wild and natural it actually forms a pretty compelling argument:
As a class feature Nature Clerics have proficiency with and wear heavy armor, worked steel refined from the earth, unlike Druids who have a cultural taboo against it (there's potentially interesting stuff about fey fearing iron, there being fey themed druid subclasses and the idea of iron as a talisman as well here)
Their channel divinity is
Tumblr media
The ability to magically charm and control plants and animals, at level 17 this is further expanded to give you the ability to command charmed creatures and notably named ‘Master of Nature’
Tumblr media
The ability to charm and later command plants and animals through the invocation of your deity fits pretty well into the idea of domesticating and controlling nature, the humanoids dominion over it.
The other notable feature nature clerics get is
Tumblr media
It’s the ability to protect you and your allies from the elements. It’s shelter. It’s ‘dampening’, reducing the power nature has over you. It’s civilization holding strong against whatever weather or natural disaster the natural world wants to throw at you.
So.. the ‘anti-nature nature cleric’..are they evil, some fern gully Hexxus motherfucker? I don’t think so. I truly think there’s nothing wrong with a character who venerates civilizations successes over nature. What does this character celebrate? Agriculture, domestication of animals, shelter, rebuilding from disaster, medicine saving those who’d simply die if they were left unattended in the wild, curing diseases.
The druid class and the realities of nature have been in a bit of a conversation. Disney druid who touts the harmony of nature in a very Disney way has seen some reactions in the form of the druid who is aware that nature is red in tooth and claw, accepts and celebrates it, death is all part of a glorious cycle, your spore druids and wildfire druids.
A nature cleric that goes one step further in that conversation, nature isn’t all bunnies and butterflies its disease, tidal waves and death, lets not accept it as whats natural lets actually try and do something about it. Build walls, grow food to provide for others, heal the sick and wounded. Death is natural? Clerics get revival spells I’m bringing my friend back.
So character concept:
Water Genasi Nature Cleric with this as their ethos, a cleric of Chauntea
Tumblr media
Water Cleric as another add on to the theme of Civilization and Nature, connected to an element of the natural world that is also essential to humanoids, cities are built alongside it, the cradle of civilization etc.
top of the head PC name is Nile for obvious reasons.
I think the place I’d most like to use this PC is Tomb of Annihilation, the survival campaign module where you deal with the jungle, disease, apex predators and a curse that hurts those risen from the dead unnaturally.

Alex Rider S03E02 Reaction
These were my first reactions to season three, completely unspoiled for the rest of the series, but of course, with significant knowledge from the books. With some thoughts and predictions thrown in too.
Anyway time to infiltrate some labs!
Liveblog
So many Yassen flashbacks bless
The letter to the prime minister! Love how it’s updated to be a USB stick or something. And a cool new Scorpia logo 👀
Are you… really going to just plug it into your laptop? Okay then lmao
‘We will deal only with the Department’ ahsdlfhs that is literally the vaguest name ever for a government department lmao at least add ‘MI6’ or something
17 years ago?? How old is Alex by now??
Some fascinating choices in how they changed the demands compared to the books 👀
‘Post it on tiktok’ ahsdlhs my brain can’t handle the idea that tiktok exists in the same world as Alex Rider
‘Maybe when she’s finished with Consanto’ lmao why is she telling him the name. Oh okay that’s why haha
Very suspicious of the new MI6 person lol. Like either it’s someone who is new enough to challenge the home secretary in a meeting or maybe they’re working for Scorpia. The timing is very convenient 👀
Lmao Mrs Jones is one day from retirement. RIP Mrs Jones
Tom just take the camera job 😭
“But we get to spend quality time together!” lmao Kyra
Why did Scorpia not do more to hide the background of the video ahsdlfhs
I guess the data scientist is probably not Scorpia but why is she not wearing the full protective gear lol. Why are she and Crawley in the field??
RIP new data scientist and RIP Mrs Jones’s retirement plans 😔
It is kind of interesting to me how Blunt is getting portrayed as super heartless for not reacting more to the death and coming off looking much worse than the rest in MI6/the Department while Scorpia is arguably the book where Blunt comes out looking best. But the show is quite focused on Blunt as the bad guy while everyone else gets humanised more
The way we keep getting these scenes of Kyra and Tom just watching Alex go off and do stuff lol
He’s not using the gloves!!!
Nile 👀 What a brutal throat blow gosh
Alex did you not hear about the detonation or….
Alex held his breath this time!!! He’s learning!!!
“An answer in the next sixty seconds is optimal” I love Nile so much gosh
Ohhh nice cliffhanger, I love Kyra and Tom not knowing if he’s alive or dead!
Overall
Very excited by that last scene! I love Nile so much already, he’s very cool and I love him offering Alex a one-time chance to get info, and how it ends with Tom and Kyra having no idea what happened with Alex. Nice to see some stuff with the Department too and the letter to the prime minister (that apparently didn’t reach the prime minister’s office lmao)
Thoughts/predictions
Not entirely sure what the point was with the new data scientist story except to make Smithers and Mrs Jones upset and look more emotional than Blunt. Like yes, it’s very sad but also I do question how good they are at their jobs if they react to every death like this. In general the show seems to be isolating Blunt from the rest of the department people a lot more than the books, but I like how he still comes across as better than the Home Secretary (who should be fired just for plugging in that USB stick into her laptop, frankly).
Nile is very cool and I love him. Do miss his more casual and cheerful attitude from the book though, but I’m super excited to see where this goes and where he takes Alex. He’s getting answers!! Love Nile casually playing the bomb and setting the timer and just asking the scientist guy questions about the cardboard cover.
It’s kind of ironic how they are not telling Tom’s brother about what is going on when in the books Tom immediately tells Jerry that Alex is MI6 despite Alex talking to him about the importance of not telling anyone haha. But I like how he did catch on. I assume maybe Tom will end up being his photographer, but Alex being assumed dead or missing is probably not helping.
It’s really interesting how the demands have changed and how it’s more UK focused, which makes sense since in the books the context was very much the Iraq war and Tony Blair/Alistair Campbell and the special relationship between the USA and the UK. But here I assume the reason Scorpia picked the UK is personal, because the Department dealt the blow that nearly finished them off 17 years ago.
Questions
What’s up with the stuff in the box?? Were those toys? Children’s clothes? What is the Clean Room? What is Invisible Sword in this universe??
Is our dear friend Max still alive? I assume he may come back to meet Alex later given his comment about them meeting again in ep 1
Where is Yassen? 😢 I crave more than just flashbacks!

Favourite moments in Song of the Crimson Nile : January 2024 update
Pt1: Eva's childhood + Set to the rescue.
Tw: Child Abuse, psychological abuse, sexual assault, violence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I understand Eva so much, and her reaction is only natural. Falling prey to a pedophile's eyes is definitely not a thing a child should go through. Eva deserves better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Idk what Set has in plan for Eva in the future of the story, but this is undoubtedly one of the best things he has done for her. A deserving end to Eva's step-dad. A death of agony and eternal suffering is what he needs.

The ending to the old guard 2 comic was just so mid. Complaining under the cut
It's revealed that in the distant past (probably upwards of thousands of years ago) Andy was a slaveowner. This obviously pissed Nile right off. I wish Nile was allowed to have a more emotional reaction, but she basically says either you're with us or you're part of the problem. And then because Andy is too depressed to stand, Nile and the rest all leave her. That's where Noriko and her henchmen find her later.
For one thing, owning slaves is terrible. But it was literally pre-civilisation as we know it. Six thousand years ago. A crime is a crime, but Andromache states that there was no alternative to POWs captured during raids apart from mass-execution, and to be honest, I kind of agree.
For another, many of them likely bear similar crimes. Crusaders executed unarmed prisoners they couldn't afford to feed, both muslims and christians committed pogroms, arab muslims engaged in slave trade in north africa far before europeans did... I'm not saying yusuf or nicolo did any of these, but when you live a thousand years, it would also be weird to *never* have any hand in anything like that at all. Even in the modern day it's almost impossible not to financially support modern slavery through buying cheap clothes. It's a dirty world.
I wish Andy had done something in the present to alienate her team. Like, refused to rescue Booker because the time limit wasn't up, even though he was being tortured. Or to go after Noriko herself even though the others don't trust her an inch. Andromache was very depressed and apathetic in this comic, but she's a very proactive character and I think if the loneliness started to eat at her she's more likely to be self destructive than withdrawn.
Noriko's motivations make no sense. She was killed over and over by the impassive sea, so she's decided she needs to punish humanity. Humanity had no role in your deaths??
Maybe it would have been too similar to the first book's villain, but said something like "We immortals cannot die from illness or old age. Therefore, we are destined for thousands of violent deaths. We are demons put on this earth to wage eternal war. If we want peace, we need to remove ourselves."
And then the thematic discussion would be: can a soldier be a force for good, or is any form of violence immoral? They've killed a lot of people for one "justified" cause or another. And they've been wrong before.
It would also make sense for Noriko -- she was an assassin, and now that shes "reformed", all she's really done is swap one victim for another.
But really, the pacing scuppered the book. Volumes of comics are always around 5 issues, and the author wasted about 3 full issues on vague set-up and hinting at Noriko as a major threat when really she's just anti-Andy, so the idea that she can end all 5 of them on her own is a bit silley.

Some musings on the central themes of Dame Agatha's novels.
Starting from Poirot novels. The first three formulated similarly by someone I know and agree with, slightly reworded by me, others are my thoughts.
Some spoilers for The ABC Murders and Evil Under the Sun ahead.
Murder on the Orient Express:
Justice. Including the question if the justice of conscience always matches the law.
Murder of Roger Ackroyd:
Fall of a person. Even someone kind, smart, caring, talented and overall sympathetic is in danger of temptations like greed and cowardice. Avoid the wrong path.
The ABC Murders:
Stigma. Someone alone, weak and especially mentally ill can easily become treated like a monster, while the true monsters more often than not are someone prosperous and healthy willing to transfer the consequences of their crimes to a defenseless person.
Death on the Nile:
Blind love/devotion. Even a selfless passion for someone can become twisted and cause corruption if it's enabling and obsessive.
Evil Under the Sun:
Lust and attention-seeking. Not only it's detrimental to your relationship/family, it makes you an easy victim for a pretty face willing to flatter you.
Hercule Poirot' s Christmas:
Arrogance. If you think yourself superior to the "regular fools" and in the right to toy with people's feelings and issues, one day you run into someone like you who will outwit you and make you suffer for what you caused to them.
Learning to overcome the haunting of past trauma.
Actions in a difficult situation are what shows one's true self. This includes a passive person learning to make decisions.
"Fighting evil" motivated by pride and revenge can make you a monster like your enemy if not worse.
Appointment with Death:
Unhealthy desire for power over people. More often than not the person like that just doesn't want to realise they are pathetic person. Also, one day you may bite off more than you can chew.
Domestic emotional abuse, varying reactions to it (apathy, embitterment, escapism) and ways to free yourself/help freeing someone from its power.
Five Little Pigs:
Righting the past wrongs. (On several levels.)
Big consequences of small things. Sometimes a misunderstanding, a badly-thought white lie or ill-timed joke can cause or contribute to tragedy.
Revenge doesn't make you happy.
Sometimes a family that looks weird from side can actually be harmonious in their own way.
Taken at the Flood:
Feeling lost. Almost everyone in this story starts with the ground being knocked from under their feet one way or another.
Perilous chase of fortune. (This is a fatal flaw of more than one character, and what the title of the novel refers to, being a poetry quote)

Song of the Crimson Nile
What happens if you leave a dark magician with his tongue in place😶
Credit animation: faceless
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I promised to show you the sketches for the cinematic of Dia’s execution, so I humbly bring it)
There is no second part, because I depicted it schematically or wrote it down in words. For example, a frame with a raised dagger: I knew what would be there, but I didn’t know how the hand or dagger would move (our artist created a cool dynamic effect in this frame)🤌
But in my variation we work with light as with decoration: it highlights what is needed and hides what is unnecessary, the epistates literally float out of the shadows as a gloomy silhouette, signaling death. In reality, events take place against an already existing background with existing light to which you need to adapt. The artists agreed among themselves to depict a scarlet, bloody sunset, which makes an association with what is happening on the platform.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In general, working with atmosphere and colors is my favorite. This is something we perceive unconsciously, but it forms first impressions. First we see - an instant reaction - then we look at it, we are imbued with it.
This is why I like visual novels more than books. There are many tools here that you can use and twist in any way that is convenient for you :)

Watching the Peter Ustinov Death On The Nile on Freevee. I've read the book and seen the Suchet adaptation, but this is the first time I've seen this one.
Spoilers follow
I like the quick-cut from Jackie & Simon kissing to Linnet & Simon's wedding.
Hey, filming at the Sphinx! (or a reasonable mockup)
Writer Salome Otterbourne being a lush wasn't clear until partway through the book. In this movie she's comically soused in every scene. And played by Angela Lansbury.
Bette Davis playing the rich American Mrs Van Schuyler, Maggie Smith as her butchish nurse-companion Miss Bowers.
Oh my, Linnet is suing Salome for defamation.
Salome's daughter is wondering if dead people can be defamed. (Aka, would Linnet's lawsuit end if she died)
Colonel Race is working for Linnet's British lawyers. They think her American lawyer, Pennington, is embezzling.
Linnet argues with her maid about a promised bonus.
Poirot notes Linnet is angering everyone.
Mia Farrow as Jackie is more effective than I expected.
Of its time: not only does the doctor have a black bag that allows him to dress Simon's bullet wound and give him morphia, the nurse, Miss Bowers, has morphia to give Jackie for hysteria.
Miss Bowers: I think a shot of morphia will meet the case. I've always found it very effective when Mrs Van Schuyler is carrying on.
Second "Belgian not French" reference.
I think the actors had fun filming the possible death scenarios. Bette Davis got to be a possible murderer! Angela Lansbury!
More "not French":
Andrew Pennington: It may be the custom in Paris to go through other people's things, but we're not in Paris now!
Hercule Poirot: Brussels, sir! The country is...
Miss Bowers on Jackie: "Nervous reaction, booze, and morphia, together they'd have sunk the Titanic."
Simon's cabin. Simon hasn't eaten his lunch. Race suggests Simon should eat, Simon says he can't. Poirot takes the tray to the table and tucks in!
"Belgian upstart, not French!"
Poirot (Peter Ustinov) and Race (David Niven) are quite the team.
From IMDb: during World War II, Major David Niven's batman (personal attendant) was Private Peter Ustinov.
More "Belgian!" references
Maggie Smith is amazing in her formal dinner jacket.

but how are we, as leftists and media consumers, supposed interact with people in the global south when we can’t even admit that, despite all the negative influences of the military on their life, marginalised people can’t stop to think that maybe they shouldn’t go and kill brown people because their government said to? like this isn’t meant to fight, and im coming from a standing point of wanting to understand, but isn’t people in the global south’s right to life more important than an american’s financial aspirations? shouldn’t recruited people be ashamed of themselves for falling for drivel about people in the global south that 95% of the time is used against them instead, all for a pay check or a college degree? it seems like that original post is quite “don’t make the killers feel bad despite the fact that they kill because they’re victims too” which is really quite victim blame-y.
Hi again! Wonderful to hear you're genuinely trying to understand. This is such a difficult and messy set of things to talk about. (For those just joining us, we're talking about this this post.)
People in countries targeted by US imperialism 100% deserve to live free from our bullshit. Absolutely. I agree. People in the US also deserve to live. Every human being on this planet deserves a life where they can get their needs met without undue struggle and no threats like violence or poverty loom over their heads.
Because of the nightmare US healthcare system, a college degree and the better pay it promises often feels like and sometimes very much is a matter of life and death. My country lets people die painfully of treatable things all the time just because they can't afford treatment, including plenty of people who have health insurance (I'll spare you the detailed rant about deductibles and copays and out-of-network providers and excluded services and corporations overriding doctors' determinations of what is and is not medically necessary), and there are so many more treatments we could have if only medical research and the expensive steps involved in FDA approval for new medications/devices weren't predominantly driven by what corporations decide will be sufficiently profitable.
But even if life in the US weren't so dire for those on the losing end of our severe economic stratification, shaming people for harmful choices is rarely an effective strategy to get them to stop.
I don't think OP was saying that people targeted by US imperialism need to be patient and understanding with US-Americans who join the military. I'm certainly not saying that. What I think OP was saying and what I'm definitely saying is that SOMEONE needs to be patient and understanding with these people and the more third parties who can extend some empathy the better. Understanding people's reasons for doing harmful things is an essential step in disrupting those reasons.
(Some people never completed that childhood development milestone where you learn not to be a selfish monster, where you learn to regulate your impulses and weigh the potential impacts on others when you're making choices. Or put more simply, some people are selfish assholes who won't ever change and all we can do is out-organize them. I'm not talking about that subset of people here. I'm talking instead about people like Nile.)
I think the crux of our misunderstanding or disagreement is about shame. You've talked about shame like it's morally important to make people who make bad choices feel ashamed of themselves. It's an understandable impulse to want people who've hurt us to suffer, and I think it's wildly unfair to expect marginalized or abused people to choke back their anger and pain and grief for their abusers' benefit — that's a main reason why this isn't about policing the reactions of directly targeted people. But for third parties like you and me, "don’t make the killers feel bad despite the fact that they kill" isn't a claim of moral equivalency, it's a strategy recommendation.
Shame is strategically counterproductive: feeling shame shuts down the higher-level parts of our cognition, which means that people who might be willing to change will have a harder time taking in new information, analyzing it accurately, and changing their behavior in light of that new information when they feel shamed. Some other cognitive things going on here: humans weren't built for the massively complex and interconnected world we live in now and it's difficult to hold the visceral reality of the costs of US imperialism to faraway strangers when you're in 21-year-old Nile's shoes, and many people find it so difficult to admit they were wrong that being confronted with information that proves them wrong causes them to believe inaccurate things more strongly.
Let me give you a few concrete examples.
People misgender me all the time, and I have a right to be mad about it. It fucking sucks. It makes my mental illness symptoms worse and makes it so much harder for me to cope with a lot of the basic stuff of life. Morally I have a right to express my pain without worrying about the precious cognitive abilities of the people who are causing that pain. But I've found that telling people they're being shitty for misgendering me only works a little bit of the time to get people to stop, and often it backfires and they just give me more shit for my trouble. What works a lot more often, especially with people I interact with on a regular basis, is to ask them questions about what about my gender is confusing for them and if there's anything that feels — "No judgment" I say with a polite smile that sucks to have to make, but fuck does it work — scary to them about shifting their beliefs about gender.
I've learned that a lot of people, when faced with the fact that there are more than two genders and mine is one they hadn't heard of before, have a gut fear that accepting what I'm telling them somehow also means their own gender isn't real. If I was assigned a gender at birth that turned out to be wrong, what does that say about theirs?? I've had dozens of irl experiences where doing some empathetic listening with someone who's harmed me and then reassuring them that, for example, they don't have to have thought carefully about their gender in order for it to be valid, if they were assigned a gender at birth and they've never really thought about it or challenged it and they want to keep being that gender without doing any more work that they can totally just do that — my reassuring them helps them resolve the fear that was at the root of their reasons for misgendering me.
It shouldn't have to be my job to do all that work, but we've yet to reach critical mass of cis people who have enough knowledge and put in enough energy to educate enough people effectively enough so that I don't have to do that shit myself. Some days I have the energy to do that work myself, and some days I spend energy I don't have to cope with misgendering I didn't have the energy to disrupt. None of it's fair. The way to make it fair is systemic changes, like changing every form on the planet with a gender box and doing all kinds of public education, including updating middle school bio curriculum to point out that we've historically assigned male and female at birth based on visual assumptions despite scientists being aware for decades that biological sex is a lot more complicated, and anyway identity is even more complicated than what parts and hormones you have. Those systemic changes will help me. Someone on Tumblr saying "terfs fuck off" might feel morally satisfying — a very real benefit when I'm having one of those days where I wonder if I'm the only one who will ever stand up for me — but it doesn't stop more people from becoming terfs. Tactics that do help stop people from becoming terfs include patiently listening to people with terfy leanings and making it as easy as possible for them to hear and process and come to accept accurate information to replace those terf leanings.
I've had conversations I treasure with Palestinians who've talked with me and other US Jews with way more patience and understanding than is fair to ask them to give us, levels of empathy that genuinely touched my soul, that have taught me so much about how to have rough conversations with fellow US Jews about Israel/Palestine and letting go of the Jewish-trauma reasons so many of us understandably but wrongly cling to Zionism. The Palestinians who were so generous with me, and the many more who've been so generous with their energy and understanding with others unlearning Zionism, shouldn't have had to do that, and they chose to do that in the context of a horrific system with practically no good choices. I take that generosity with me when I hear Jews in my life saying shitty and wrong things about Palestinians and I do my best in those situations to be more patient and empathetic than I want to be in the hope that it'll help someone reconsider their reasons for supporting a vision of Jewish political sovereignty that sees equality for non-Jewish citizens as an existential threat.
Expecting marginalized or abused people to be patient with their abusers is not ever ok and I want to emphasize again the empathy I was giving Nile in my previous response is never ever something fictional people targeted by the US military let alone real-life targeted people should be expected to do. From my reading, OP wasn't talking about directly targeted people at all, only third parties. Maybe I've complicated things for you here by adding that directly targeted people sometimes choose to do this terribly unfair work — because it can be very effective, because it can feel like the best of bad options, and personally because it can be healing and hopeful and empowering when I'm successful in patience-and-understanding-ing someone into stopping their behavior that hurts me. I added that because you asked how you, as a leftist and media consumer, are supposed to interact with people directly targeted by US militarism and you might find my experiences on different sides of that power dynamic on other issues helpful as you continue figuring out how you can best contribute to working to end US imperialism.
Solving complex problems requires a variety of long-term work from a lot of people playing different roles, and ultimately it requires people who are causing harm to stop. Shaming people for harmful behavior is so rarely effective and so often backfires, but it's profoundly unfair to expect people directly targeted to be careful not to express themselves in ways that might make their abusers feel shame, so I think it is fair to encourage third parties to take a little extra care to avoid adding to the shame pile.

Why the Egyptians never mentioned the "powerful Hebrew wizard raised by our Queen who turned the goddamn Nile into blood and killed half our population with meteors plagues pest invasion and a god of death ?" via /r/atheism
Why the Egyptians never mentioned the "powerful Hebrew wizard raised by our Queen who turned the goddamn Nile into blood and killed half our population with meteors, plagues, pest invasion and a god of death ?" I mean if that happened to my people I would have wrote it down immediately and make sure they never forget it and mess again with that Magical Tribe from the Desert. Egyptians wrote a lot about their enemies and the pain and humiliations suffered from them. The "People from the Sea" who destroyed the Old Kingdom were clearly mentioned and it was way before the Hebrew were a thing. It's almost like the Exodus story was completely made up ? And should be interpreted as revenge fanfic about the Persian oppression that they couldn't mention by name for fear of punishment ? Jewish communities in Egypt were plentiful during the new kingdom (they had their own ghetto because they thought the gentiles could "contaminate them"), and I wonder what would be an Egyptian's reaction after hearing the story of Exodus ("uhhhh, I didn't hear about this one, but cool story, bro.") 'Whenever an actor lands a lead role in a project, they know they’ll gear up for a big challenge. It gets even more intense when they’re playing historical figures because then there’s a whole other layer of research that they’ll have to do in order to sound and even move convincingly as their character. When Cillian Murphy was handpicked by Christopher Nolan to play the titular role in Oppenheimer, he knew that he had his work cut out for him — as he told Collider in an interview prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Murphy and Nolan have worked together several times, but Murphy told Collider's Steve Weintraub that he still gets surprised by Nolan’s call because he does it “out of the blue” and he had “no idea” that Nolan was considering him for a lead historical role in a massively ambitious project. From the call on, Murphy says he knew he “had six months to really go in.” He could only have one reaction to the life-changing phone call, though:
“I can’t think of any better word than it’s a dream. It sounds like such a cliché, but it’s the truth. But I had no idea he was going to call me. He just called me out of the blue. That’s his MO; you never hear from him and then he calls. So he called me, and I genuinely didn’t know what it would be, and then he said, ‘I’m making this movie about Oppenheimer and I would like you to play Oppenheimer.’ It’s a big shock, and a very pleasant one, but then you kind of go, ‘Okay, now I have a lot of work to do.’”
Is Six Months Enough To Learn How to Embody a Historical Figure Like Oppenheimer?
Murphy also revealed to Collider that his typical process of stepping into the shoes of a historical figure “would have taken more time,” but admitted that “six months was good” because they “just went straight at it” the moment the call ended. From that point on, it’s pretty easy to imagine that the Peaky Blinders star kicked off heavy research to embody the father of the atomic bomb — and now you can see how it played out on the big screen.
The star-studded cast of Oppenheimer also features Robert Downey Jr. (Avengers: Endgame), Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place), Matt Damon (Air), Florence Pugh (Black Widow), Gary Oldman (Mank), Kenneth Branagh (Death on the Nile), Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), Josh Hartnett (Black Mirror), Jack Quaid (The Boys), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Olivia Thirlby (Goliath).'
