In the ancient world bats were seen as powerful creatures of magic, and the world of the night. To keep yourself awake you could tie the head of a bat in a black bag and place it near your left arm. If you were trying to stay awake for romantic reasons, the Roman writer Pliny suggested that a clot of bat’s blood placed under a woman’s pillow would stimulate desire. By the medieval period bats produced a dichotomy of highlighting the presence of evil while also redirecting misfortune. Possibly as a remnant of the ancient world, a live bat nailed upside down over a doorway, was said to protect livestock, and prevent ill luck. This sadistic practice is unfortunately recorded as continuing into the early 20th century. Other uses include Bat hearts and bones being carried as good luck charms, and a method for gaining wealth. A German variation on this theme is recorded in the 13th century by Albertus Magnus, who states that the use of a bat’s heart or liver added to lead shots for bullets; will ensure that every shot fired would reach its intended target. Bats also have the reputation of demonic creatures, this can be seen in the 1332 French witchcraft case against Lady Jacaume of Bayonne, who was publically burned for nothing less than groups of bats flying around her home and garden. This witchcraft association can also be seen more famously in Macbeth, and the use of Bat in the spells performed by the three witches. However it is in the 17th century that the focus of this post is directed! Namely with Genevan physician Sir Théodore Turquet de Mayerne, and his wonderfully named ointment ‘Balsam of Bat’; contained “adders, bats, suckling whelps (puppies), earthworms, hogs’ grease, stag marrow, and the thigh bone of an ox.” (Continued in the comments). #thursdaytales #halloweenbats #batsofinstagram #darkhistory #macabre #historyofmedicine #medicinebottles #ceramics #handmadegifts #mementomori #deathpositive #deathpositiveart #gothictales #pottery #bottleart #bottleartwork #folklore #folkremedies #folkart #witchtrials #17thcentury #witchcraft #jamesi #charlesii #corpsemedicine #pharmacology #folkmedicine #plaguedoctor #plague #plaguedoctorart https://www.instagram.com/p/CUc6YRel6--/?utm_medium=tumblr

I’m Angela, a post mortem jewelry designer. That means I take hair, fur, whiskers, cremated remains, or teeth and put them in reliquary keepsake jewelry made to remember people and pets that are sometimes still alive but are most often dead. I’m inspired by Victorian era jewelry and hope to help revive mourning objects as important tools for grieving our dead as well as remembering our own mortality. #meetthemaker #postmortemjewelry #mementomori #orderofthegooddeath #deathpositive #deathpositiveart

“In Remembrance of the Future, or the Triumph of the Living” Couldn’t decide on a title so I went true classic style and just made it both. #deathart #macabreart #gothart #mementomori #skullart #deathpositive #deathpositiveart #arslongavitabrevis #fantasyart #procreate #procreateart #procreateillustration #alicequinnart #darkart #darkartists #occultart #witchyart #witchyvibes #witchart https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb-gpQ5rvHU/?utm_medium=tumblr

She’s getting there I swear. I’ve been feeling kinda out of it the last few days, so nothing is making significant progress, but I’m trying. My sister is responsible for the color palette shift, she was very right, and it better fits my normal color palettes. Still feel like the skull needs more… #deathart #macabreart #gothart #mementomori #skullart #deathpositive #deathpositiveart #arslongavitabrevis #fantasyart #fantasyillustration #fantasy #digitalart #digitalillustration #instaart procreateart #procreateillustration #alicequinnart https://www.instagram.com/p/CbxvBLfLJfg/?utm_medium=tumblr

So it's been an interesting week. I got in a car accident on Tuesday and have been dealing with that all week so I haven't been doing any art. Luckily I wasn't hurt, but my poor car was totalled. I did go to #amorphousartshow last night and my piece sold. She looks so beautiful in that frame. I hope whoever bought her loves her. If you want a print feel free to message me, I'll be posting the leftovers from the show on my Etsy soon, and you can always go to my redbubble if you'd rather get a t-shirt or notebook. #art #artshow #illustration #otherworldlyartscollective #otherworldlyartsartist #mementomori #deathandthemaiden #deathpositiveart #fantasyart #skeletonart #deathart #gothicart (at Artspace Jackson Flats) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVJKUi5l34e/?utm_medium=tumblr
