Pixel NewGen Tamers
Some of the Digimon videogames protagonist from 2015 to 2022 in the style of Digimon Story DS. Including the Appmon ones because they counts too. This is based on the original game sprites. Take this as some sort of mockup..

Digimon Story: Lost Evolution Playthrough Information
Hello, hello! I think it's time for a big explanation, huh?
Long story short, while I'm planning on only playing Dragon Quest IX for the blog while I have to wait for the Circle Pad rubber replacement for my New 3DS to arrive (information post for it will be posted shortly after this), I got tweet news that a certain Japanese-exclusive Nintendo DS game just got an English fan translation released to the public from a certain group called "Operation: Decoded". And to my shock, that game turned out to be one of the old games I wished I played as a teen, it's Digimon Story: Lost Evolution.
Tumblr media
Yes, I play Digimon games. Do you expect me to play only Pokemon games forever?
But on a serious note, along with watching a bit of Digimon anime like Digimon Adventure 02, Tamers, Frontiers, and Ghost Game, I played Digimon video games before excluding mobile games, mostly after I finished Pokemon games' main stories. Digimon World: DS, Digimon World: Dawn and Dusk, Digimon World Championship...
Before you ask, I know that Digimon World exists for the Playstation and despite the naming conventions, all of these games are not related to it in terms of gameplay. DS, Dawn, Dusk, and Lost Evolution are actually part of the Digimon Story series, which is actually their real title when it was released in Japan. I didn't know about this until I read more about them in Wikipedia and when I started playing Cyber Sleuth. Digimon World Championship, on the other hand, is separate from either World or Story series as it's only a glorified virtual pet on the Nintendo DS. But honestly, I had a lot of fun playing it despite I only train my Digimon by dragging them back and forth to each cage and that's the only thing you know about World Championship.
But back to Lost Evolution, as I said, it was the only Digimon Story game that wasn't released worldwide, probably because the last game before LS, Dawn and Dusk, got mixed reviews. Not sure how many were sold, but all I can say is that the other reason is how Jaiden Animations played Dawn for her video, and lack of Digimon knowledge aside, it wasn't very pretty to see her suffer. If you want to watch how she tried to survive Digimon World: Dawn, click here for her video. But does that deter me to play Lost Evolution after its fan translation is released? Absolutely not!
Just like Fantasy Life's playthrough, I will post playthrough logs throughout most of the game and will only post things outside of the main story, gameplay, and boss battles when something interesting is happening. And before you ask, I have a real DSi and I'm playing it through hardware. So sorry in advance, but you're still sticking with crappy photo camera photos.
The only difference is that I'm playing this blind for the first time. While I do have a bit of experience playing Dawn and Dusk including future games such as the Cyber Sleuth duology, I genuinely have no idea what the new features and gameplay found in Lost Evolution are. I don't know if GameFAQs have any guides posted about it, so whether they have it or not, I'm not gonna rely on it for the sake of getting through it fresh. Story-wise, I did see some spoilers on plot elements involving it when I was browsing through TV Tropes, WIkimon, and the Digimon Fandom Wiki. But honestly, with my attention span of a goldfish, I doubt I can be spoiled. I hope.
With that, it's time to start the game, but not before going over Dragon Quest IX next. See you in the next post!

how do u even start getting into Digimon?? there so much stuff, i dont even know where to begin. like, there is like a hundred shows??? do i start with the first one that came out??
Idk man it just happened??
No, but seriously, don't worry about it! There aren't even that many shows if you ask me. I'll put a list below the cut! I'll list all movies too, so it'll look like more than it really is. Also the dates are the japanese air dates.
Obviously starting with the first season, Digimon Adventure is an easy pick, it also has the most sequels and movies.
But aside from the Adventure related media, all other Digimon Seasons are completely self-contained, and you can just go and watch any! They also all explore "Digimon" and the Digital World in different ways. I personally loved them all.
For the anime I also highly recommend watching the Japanese original. I'm sorry for anyone who grew up with it, but I can barely stand watching the English Dub at all. If you know German though, the German Dub is really good. I still prefer the Japanese original, but the German Dub is at least a translation and not a fan fiction.
The same basically goes for the games. You can just pick any of them up! Also, all Digimon games kind of do their own thing in terms of gameplay and mechanics. There's similarities too, but usually each have their own vibe. A lot of the DS titles do work very similar though!
Anime:
Adventure: Digimon Adventure (Movie) (1999) • Digimon Adventure (Season 1) (1999-2000) Digimon Adventure: Our War Game (Movie) (2000) • Digimon Adventure 02 (Season 2) (2000-2001) Digimon Adventure 02: Hurricane Touchdown!! Supreme Evolution!! The Golden Digimentals (Movie) (2000) Digimon Adventure 02: Diaboromon Strikes Back (Movie) (2001) • Digimon Adventure tri. Frontier: • Digimon Frontier (Season 4) (2002-2003) Digimon Frontier: Revival of the Ancient Digimon (Movie) (2002)

Just there are so many mon games out there. So many. To say that Pokemon has the monopoly really shows that you haven't been looking around the genre.
Games I've played and liked in the monster buddy battling/raising/farming thing include:
So many Digimon games. Digimon World DS, Digimon World Dawn/Dusk, Digimon World Championship, Digimon Story Cybersleuth/Hacker's Memory, and Digimon Survive specificlly.
Nexomon Extinction
Monster Hunter Stories and Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin
Dinosaur King
Fossil Fighters, Fossil Fighters: Champions, and Fossil Fighters: Frontier
Yo-kai Watch 2: Boney Spirits/Fleshy Souls
Viva Piñata
Magi-Nation
And there's like so much more out there. I didn't include things I played and didn't like for personal reasons like I couldn't get the camera to work right in Dragon Quest Monsters and just I'm shit at camera aiming or like the Shin Megami Tensei game I picked up where I just didn't personally like the designs for the humans and the whole do certain events by X time in the story is a bit complicated for me and my memory and focusing issues. Or just the consul issues I was having while trying to play Spectrobes led to me not having a decent time playing.
But who knows? You might like those games.

The Never Forget series timeline
Because yeah it's getting confusing. This is mainly for my own reference but it’s a list ig
Set in alternative time:
The [As the Gods Will] events that set off the earthquake where time resets at the end.
The [Pandora Hearts] events because it takes place in multiple Mukuro lifetimes.
The [Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle] events take place in many alternative dimensions and timelines. Same thing to the [Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood] installment.
Things that existed even before the earthquake
Demons from Kimetsu no Yaiba
Shizume City from K Project (the worlds both existed, but they were connected via only the Kannagi and Inari back then. Only after the earthquake did the bridge appear)
Secret Dobermen experiments from Cuticle Tantei Inaba
Death City from Soul Eater
Youkai/Ayakashi from Nurarihyon no Mago
Demihumans from Ajin: Demi Human
The Borderlands from Imawa no Kuni no Alice
Heavenly Host from Corpse Party
Things that only showed up after the earthquake
Branch of Sin from Deadmen Wonderland
The Bridge that connects Yuki Yuna wa Yuusha de aru + K Project to Namimori shows up
The Digital World from Digimon
The Tentacle Experiments from Assassination Classroom
Things that were in motion even before the earthquake
PRE-CURSE (Arcobaleno)
Belphegor's part in Nurarihyon no Mago (Primo era)
All Corpse Party events for Viper. (Fuuta, Bluebell, and Mitsuru only enter the place after the earthquake because they are younger, but time also does a flip flop in Heavenly Host.)
POST-CURSE (Arcobaleno)
Takeshi was already a Demon Slayer at this point.
Fon falls into a coma before the earthquake.
Ajin events begin pre-earthquake.
Verde infiltrated the experimental stages of the Wretched Egg.
The Pandora Hearts reincarnators and As the Gods Will survivors are reborn in this world and take their new roles.
The dimension jumpers from FMAB enter at random points in history.
Things that were put in motion (character-wise) only after the earthquake
Existence of the Digital World
Chikusa, Lussuria, and Verde become deadmen and are sent to Deadman Wonderland.
Hibari, Shamal, and Irie get sent to the Borderlands
Hayato runs away from his family and goes to Death City
Skull travels to Shizume City
Ken escapes Alcamone, joins NORA, and Haru is instated in Japan
Kyoko and Nagi/Chrome are scouted for the Yuusha System
AFTER HIBARI WAKES UP (tentatively 2-4 years after the earthquake)
Demon Slayer canon events
Washio Sumi wa Yuusha de aru climax events
Assassination Classroom events (Moon explosion)
General Chronological Reading Order of the entire series (to be updated as series goes on)
who lives, who dies (god tells your story) - As the Gods Will
another hundred cycles (away from wonderland) - Pandora Hearts
pure white orchids (take flight on white wings) - TSUBASA
beyond the gate (maybe we’ll find a fantasy) - FMAB
worth much more (than the corpses lining your walls) - Corpse Party
insert new coin to play (again, again, again) - Ajin: Demi Human
don’t fear the storm (the storm should fear you) - Nurarihyon no Mago
together we stand (under your sword of damocles) - K Project
neverland's a place (for lost boys like me) - Digimon World DS
don’t forget the days we lived (at the border) - Imawa no Kuni no Alice
dead men walking (in the birdcage) - Deadman Wonderland
on the trail (always for the culprit, never for you) - Cuticle Tantei Inaba
soul-searching (explosions) after the storm - Soul Eater
oh flower, bloom bright (for you, and your smile) - WaSuYu
keep breathing (until daylight) - Kimetsu no Yaiba
sky's not the limit (for we've made it to the moon) - Assassination Classroom
I’m sorry this is so messy lmaooo. Also note that you DON’T have to read them chronologically. You can read them in writing order, or skip installments if you want!

No, go ahead. talk about digimon games. I need more research 👁👄👁
*Heavy breathing* Someone asked about digimon...
*AHEM*
anyway, I'll tell you about the ds games! yes the world games and ds games are separate even through two of the games are known as digimon world ds (dawn/dusk) I'll explain.
The digimon ds games are a bit confusing for new players as the English translation made them be named after the digimon world franchise instead of existing as their own thing, but the original name they carry are the Digimon Story games! Story because they are the jrpg part of digimon lol
There are also a few universal mechanics like farm islands, devolution + evolution, SPECIES EXP, etc. the game will teach you about these, but feel free to ask about them!
-----
DIGIMON STORY (digimon world ds)
Pros:
Game is pretty short for a Jrpg!
Digimon selection isn't too shabby with there being many classic ones in the bunch, So there's a lot of variety!
Post games quests are really fun!
Digimon can enter the farm and give quests (I like how it gives the digimon some personality without needing to be full characters all right)
Cons:
This game is extremely easy. Until that boss.
Like this game is so easy that it almost leaps into mind-numbing
The mind-numbing comes from the grind being really bad...
Some of the best designed and most iconic digimon are locked behind online battles, you might see why this is a problem.
maps are mazes. this is not good. (They aren't hard, but they can be a bit confusing)
----
A quick summary for this game is that it's definitely made with the idea that kids are going to want to try and get every digimon and that they'll spend A LOT of time grinding for that. Otherwise this game is actually pretty fun!
-----
DIGIMON STORY SUNBURST AND MOONLIGHT (digimon world dawn and dusk)
Pros:
Game is a bit harder than the original digimon story!
Almost the same amount of digimon as the original digimon story!
Cool fusion digimon are no longer locked behind online battles!!!
extremely quick if you use the resources at your disposal! I've beaten it in like 18~ hours.
Cons:
Grind is much, much worse (It can become much easier, but it requires planning)
Cool fusion digimon are locked behind post game quest that is the second to last fight in the game :/
Side quests are mandatory throughout the story(Not a personal problem, but a warning)
You cannot get 100% in one game, because these games have ✨Version exclusives✨ plus optional side-quests are locked behind certain digimon, with certain personalities, with certain farm islands, and ✨✨multiple✨✨ ✨version exclusives also have quests✨
Maps are ripped from the original digimon story! with some changes!
Final post game quest needs to be unlocked through cheats because it was locked behind online battles as well...
----
Quick summary! I literally love these games, it's Stockholm syndrome 💖💖💖. also despite the negatives these games aren't that bad! just a bit boring sometimes! Planning is a bit more important in this game as a lot of things depend on how much mechanics you can figure out... honestly I'd say to give it a try! Btw here's a digivolution guide for the game! you can thank me later lol
----
DIGIMON STORY LOST EVOLUTION (No official translation)
Pros:
best ds game by far!
More digimon than ever with a built in evolution tree checker to plan out parties much easier!
less grind due to the game giving out more experience per battle, and a longer overall playtime so levels will not suddenly jump for any bosses!
a decent story with fun locations!
optional bosses throughout the game that reference other digimon media!
a reason to grind past levels! (tree of evolution plates, with expand if you want!)
side quests now have a list to see what digimon you need! and actually good rewards for completing them!
NO MORE LOCKED FUSION DIGIMON!!!!
Farms are finally helpful! They give plenty of exp once you unlock the upgrdaes for them!
Cons:
mandatory quests are still here!
you might need to look for a guide to see what digimon have what evolution plates for your personal team!
Ancient beasts and sovereigns are basically post-game digimon...
Post game quest is locked behind 100,000 tamer points... (for reference main game is completed with only 50,000 points necessary)
there is another That boss you will need to grind for.
Only official translation is an English translation made by fans :/ (game isn't hard to follow without a translation, plus there are Eng guides with digimon evolution info sooooo it's more a personal preference :p)
Has pokemon HM system but the digimon have traits that allow them to do specific things on the map... (you get three digimon with traits to help progress, but you do not need to stick with them, just keep this system in mind.)
30 digimon limit :(
-----
Quick summary! This is unironically one of my favorite games ever! It's game play improves greatly from dawn and dusk, and are very easy to get into without much knowledge of anything! There are a few problems outside of nitpicks, but if you choose one game to play out of all of these, I would 100% recommend this one!

Final Fantasy XVI's similarities to Tales of Arise have me on a Tales kick, which means I ended up playing Tales of the Tempest, widely considered the worst game intended to be a mainline Tales title. It took me about 15 hours and I did every sidequest I found, all of which involved walking across a field map at a frustratingly slow pace to pick up an item and then walking all the way back for a line of dialogue and a negligible amount of money. I easily could have shaved at least two hours off my playtime and I wouldn't have lost anything.
Tumblr media
Tempest is a 2005 japan-only release for the DS developed by Dimps, the freelancers behind most handheld Sonic games and a good chunk of handheld licensed games, especially for DBZ and Digimon. When it dropped, it received so much hate from fans that Namco pretty quickly pulled it from the list of mainline Tales games, though they've recently quietly added it back to the list. They developed two more DS Tales games afterwards, in-house, and to fan approval, which makes Tempest even more interesting to me, as a first, failed attempt at a handheld Tales game.
It's definitely a bad game. Everything that involves a menu takes about three more button presses than necessary, the world takes a long time to travel for no good reason, the models are low poly and the textures are worse. The battle system is so unnecessarily limited that it's honestly barely worth engaging with. You only get four arte slots, and the protagonist's main gimmick is that he can turn into a werewolf when under half health, but transformation takes up an arte slot, so he functionally only has three. CPU-controlled characters also will only use moves assigned to their four arte slots. And there's no access to the artes menu in battle. Two of the five characters are werewolves, so only have three slots. Two more are mage/healer combos, so you have to divide their four slots between both offensive and healing spells. They balance this by making healing items unbelievably cheap and easy to obtain. Lemon and Pineapple Gels are 90 gald each. Miracle Gels are available in all stores for about 200 gald each. I ended the game with 80k gald.
The game has five party members, but only the protagonist, Caius, gets enough focus and story relevance that I'd consider him a character. Of the four main villains, two end up being his father and his brother. Another villain wears a mask and has the same hair color as the female lead, so I figured they'd be related in some way, but no, the female lead is so coincidental to the story that despite being on the box, she's the only character whose name I don't remember. Two of the party members, Tilkis and Forest, are the prince of a country you never see and his bodyguard. The last party member, Arria, is a priestess with the evil church who's sent to spy on the party, immediately gains their trust with no effort, and then immediately turns coat on the church when pushed. There's not much there.
That said, the lore has weirdly a lot of potential. About a century ago, humans committed genocides against the werewolf and ogre races, which carved out space for the human country to take over as the main superpower on the continent. Now, the human church is carrying out an inquisition against werewolves once again for unknown reasons, stoking fear against werewolves among the populace by spreading false rumors and executing any werewolves delivered to them without trial. This is pretty standard rpg stuff, but it's made interesting about halfway in, when it's revealed that the church is capturing werewolves to try to learn about a magic spell the werewolf country once had that was able to resurrect the dead. The goal of the inquisition is to gain and use this spell to resurrect all the victims of that genocide, thus making humans no longer culpable for the sins of their ancestors.
It's a fucking good hook, honestly. It reminds me of current debates around history education and white guilt. The church figures they can commit any violence they want in the present, as once they get that spell, the dead will come back anyway, so they won't have done anything wrong. The best parts of the game are when Caius tries to make his adversaries understand that making the dead no longer dead doesn't fix torture or generations of oppression. It doesn't rebuild the ruined werewolf city, return their lost poetry, or make their two countries relative equals on the global stage once more.
Unfortunately, they don't do a ton with this one really good idea. It's revealed near the end that the spell was a lie (it actually opens a portal to an evil dimension), the war between werewolves and humans was a lie (the werewolves opened a portal to an evil dimension and humans took credit for their fall for some reason), and the genocide against the ogres was inconsequential (ogres are not sentient and didn't have a country to begin with, they just stay north of the wall). It's like they understood that Tales games are known for their twists but didn't understand what a twist needs to do in order to change a story for the better. Just a strange game all around.

Finally. I did it. I achieved Nirvana.
This was my last task after finishing the main story. I guess I could still load up all my Farms with Mummymon lol.
Nice game overall. I liked the farm and evolution mechanics but they felt a bit in-depth for how short the game itself was.
Equipment being level-locked felt like a dumb decision too, since an intergral mechanic for making your characters stronger involves their level constantly fluctuating. Didn't seem well thought out.
The dungeons were also boring reskins of each other. They weren't horrible though. Oh and the difficulty curve was very weird. Why did I breeze through the entire game only to have the final boss one or two shot my strongest mons?? Even Gobbo, my MVP, who funnily enough spent most of the game as an Arukenimon (shes a Cannondramon now though)
I can see myself playing this again in future. Probably enjoying it more honestly since now I know how the mechanics work and stuff.
