What's Living, If Not With You?

Welcome, romantics and anti-romantics, to this simple, passionate yet heart-wrenching legend of Dona Paula, her lover and the point that was named after her + my visit and thoughts on the point!

This goes out to those who are suckers for the classic "forbidden romance, angst" trope, just like me; trust me, you guys are gonna love this.

Everything is Fascinating to Those Who are Fascinated.

I was just about the age of nine when my parents decided it was about time we explored the famous, Portugal-influenced Indian state of Goa. I don't think I got a lot of say in the planning of the trip, given I was only a child, but I liked beaches and still do, so it was an approval from me and my sister.

So one flight, one day, and many fiascoes later, we found ourselves at a higher ground by a beach with a bottle of soda in each hand.

I was a curious child and exploring was my forte, so I stood there, and stared long and hard at the bright white statues of a woman and a man, standing tall above the sea. My then seven-year-old sister asked my mother what the deal with the funny-looking rocks was, and here's what she told us.

The Price of Love is Death.

Originally from Sri Lanka, the Souto Maior family was an affluent one which settled in Goa in 1744. They conquered a major strip of land in the state and quickly became popular.

Dona Paula Amaral Antónia de Souto Maior was a witty, pretty woman and daughter of Dom António Caetano de Menezes Souto Maior, an influential and wealthy man.

She was said to be noble, charitable, and kind at heart despite her high status. Whenever she wasn't handling her responsibilities, she was helping locals in the neighborhood.

Her reputation was well-kept for a long while, until she fell in love with a poor fisherman. Dona Paula had an affair with him in secret before working up the courage to present her relationship to her father, who immediately disapproved of it immediately in fear of damaging the family name.

Heartbroken, both Dona Paula and her lover jumped off a point over the beach and into the sea, for living had no worth without love.

Most of the locals, with all respect still intact for Dona Paula, grieved her death (occurring on 21 December, 1782). They named the point after her to honour her and her undying, eternal love.

Romance Lives Forever, in Stories.

Years after Dona Paula's death, the two sculptures were installed on the point, which now give it the title of 'the most romantic spot' in all of Goa.

Legend has it, anyone who watches the sea from the point on a full-moon night, can still see the fisherman floating about in the waters as he searches for his beloved.

To this day, no one is quite sure whether the legend is true or if it's just a tall-tale, knitted by an elder to have the kids of the house themselves a good night's sleep.

Many even say that the sculptures aren't Dona Paula and her lover at all- they're of an anatomist who goes by the name of Robert Knox and his wife.

Fictitious or not, either way, I'd like to believe in Dona Paula's tale of true love, because if she had to sacrifice herself for it, surely she had wanted someone to have faith in it. My nine-year-old self and I now would be more than happy to be part of that 'someone'.

Oh and the best part? The sculptures were crafted by a woman, Yrsa von Leistner.

Tinha uma galeria rotativa. A dona era uma ricaça que ninguém nunca via por lá. Era um prédio de esquina, grande pra caramba. Cabia muita coisa. Mas só o que havia exposto lá dentro nos estandes era arte. De todo tipo. A proposta da dona foi dar um estande de um metro quadrado para cada artista selecionado. E a pessoa poderia expor ali o que desejasse, desde que ficasse mudando com certa frequência o que ia expor...

A dona também achava bom que o artista pusesse seu nome no estande, fosse o verdadeiro, pseudônimo ou nome artístico. O importante era que as artes tivessem sempre uma assinatura.

Clécio expunha partituras. Compunha e as deixava lá por um mês. Na esperança de que uma certa música se interessasse e decidisse tocá-las em seu violino.

A música era Dandara – por quem Clécio era apaixonado. Se perguntassem a ele quem amava mais: a música Dandara ou a música de Dandara, ele ficava todo confuso. E só sabia dizer que seu sonho era escutar Dandara tocar uma de suas partituras.

Em seu estande, Dandara deixava uma caixa de som e os CDs amadores que produzia, com as gravações das obras instrumentais que interpretava no violino. Ainda não tinha se dignado a interpretar algum Clécio. Mas era uma mulher aberta. Tinha tudo para querer fazer isso um dia. Só não queria desperdiçar os momentos iniciais da carreira (sempre os mais sofridos) interpretando quem ainda não tinha nome – para ajudá-la a fazer o seu.

Gilmar fazia esculturas e peças em cerâmica. E a filha dele era pintora. Tinham cada um o seu estande, é claro, mas viviam brigando, porque a menina queria pintar as peças do pai.

– É tudo muito sem graça! Deixa eu pôr uma corzinha, que fica melhor.

– Você me respeita, menina. Se a madame deixou eu ficar aqui, é porque minha arte é boa também.

– Não falei que não é boa. Só falei que dá pra melhorar, velho chato.

Isso porque a frase “Você me respeita, menina” era o comentário fixo do pai sempre que conversava com ela. Bem educadinha, a moça. Mas, ao menos, era boa. Pintava bem. Talento inato, coisa de família.

Samuel expunha seus desenhos feitos à mão, e tinha uma quedinha pela filha boca dura do Gilmar. Mas só de ver o jeito como ela tratava o pai, já ficava acuado pensando na dureza que seria namorar com ela. Casamento então? Eita... Nem pensar. Mas, sempre que acordava se sentindo mais corajoso, ia lá apartar uma briga, levando um original para ela pintar com técnica de aquarela (que ele amava mais que ela). E Gisele dava o sorriso vitorioso de quem tem o talento reconhecido, zombava mais um pouquinho do pai, dizendo “Viu? Ele sabe o que é bom!”, e isso bastava pra deixar o dia de Samuel mais colorido... literalmente... (Eita, trocadilho não intencional).

Eram vários estandes no total. E os artistas que ficavam mais perto uns dos outros acabavam fazendo essas amizades, trocando essas fagulhas de existência cotidiana, dando um cigarro pra quem estava sem, ajudando a pessoa ali próxima a se sentir tão valorizado quanto qualquer artista deveria se sentir – com ou sem público.

Numa ala mais afastada, a dona tinha consentido em haver um estande meio misterioso. A pessoa escreveu só “Criador” no letreiro próprio para cada artista deixar seu nome ou codinome e, assim, identificar o estande.

A maior parte do tempo ordinário do dia, o estande ficava vazio. E quando surgia algo, ninguém via o dono do estande trazer. E nunca acontecia de alguém ver algo exposto ali ao mesmo tempo que outra pessoa. Era sempre uma experiência solitária. Só a pessoa e o artista.

Um dia, Gisele estava andando pelo prédio pra ver se tinha lixeiras de separação de lixo reciclável – decidida a deixar uma reclamação na caixa de sugestões se não achasse. Em sua andança por corredores nunca antes visitados, ela passou pelo estande do tal “Criador”, e voltou correndo berrando para junto do pai.

– O que foi, minha filha? O que foi, minha menina? Fala pro seu pai.

Samuel veio logo acudir também. Mas se limitou a ficar acariciando bem de leve o ombro dela, esperando com um olhar preocupado e ansioso, enquanto ela se acalmava. Depois de minutos que pareceram horas, Gisele começou:

– Ti... tinha um... coração, pai... Um coração... de gente, batendo, com sangue e tudo...

Os dois homens se olharam. Havia a mesma mensagem em seus olhos, e eles assentiram um para o outro com a cabeça, já decididos a fazer a única coisa lógica a se fazer:

– Vamos chamar a polícia... – disse Gilmar.

– Vamos lá ver... – disse Samuel.

E como suas frases tinham saído ao mesmo tempo, acabaram surpreendendo um ao outro ao se darem conta de que tinham pensado coisas tão diferentes.

Diego Castro se aproximou da comoção. Era o único artista que fazia questão de ser chamado pelo nome e sobrenome, conforme colocara em seu letreiro – embora fosse tudo nome artístico, e o verdadeiro fosse Mariano Gomes Monteiro... da Silva, como não podia deixar de ser. Se tem gente que não gosta do nome, pode saber que termina em Silva, da Silva ou outro sobrenome basicão.

Com seu típico ar de superioridade, falou como se pudesse resolver o enigma:

– Ora, deixem disso. Que mané polícia. E não adianta ir lá ver. Já deve ter sumido. Eu sou um dos poucos que pode se gabar de ter visto obras desse lunático mais de uma vez. E é sempre assim. Aparece, some dali um pouco, e é sempre coisa tétrica: olhos, fígado, um par de mãos. Já andei colhendo depoimentos por aí. Eu, pessoalmente, vi quando estava exposta uma coluna cervical e, na segunda vez, eram pulmões.

A fala de Diego incomodou Samuel de um monte de jeitos diferentes. Ele detestou o tom, ficou bravo com o pouco caso que ele fez do pânico em que Gisele estava, sentiu que estavam perdendo tempo precioso escutando a ladainha, quando podiam estar correndo lá para ver se flagravam alguma coisa, e ficou indignado que algo tão maluco pudesse estar acontecendo e esse sujeito ficasse falando como quem conta o último capítulo da novela.

Mas... pobre Samuel. Ele era jovem. Depois ele aprende. Era Diego Castro quem já estava com bagagem suficiente para tratar a coisa toda como aquilo que ela realmente era: um mistério. E não ia adiantar ninguém se debater, espernear, se jogar no chão ou coisa do tipo.

Enquanto isso, os jornais da região vinham registrando, com um pouco mais de frequência, as histórias felizes de pessoas que andavam conseguindo se curar de situações terminais, por receberem os órgãos de que precisavam. As matérias começaram a surgir de um jeito aleatório. Mas quando as ocorrências aumentaram, os jornais notaram um padrão, e as manchetes vinham quase sempre no esquema: nova doação anônima salva paciente de 54 anos que precisava de rim; doações anônimas de órgãos continuam salvando vidas e despertando as suspeitas da polícia; seriam as doações anônimas obra de algum justiceiro infiltrado no mercado de órgãos?

E o mistério da galeria continuou. Até a rotatividade natural da proposta do prédio acabar renovando os artistas e transformando a história em lenda urbana.

– Só sei que, se você fizer um concurso para premiar o artista mais anônimo e mal compreendido de todos os tempos, o “Criador” vai precisar mandar alguém descer do Céu pra receber o prêmio em nome d’Ele.
