Voltron: The Series

Next up Voltron: The Third Dimension (V3D) Now I want to start off by saying, yes, the art is atrocious BUT I will be defending it because it's the first fully CGI animated show in the US! A very big accomplishment for the Voltron series Dotu/VV - V3D (here) - VF - VLD

Good ol' 1998 V3D is a pseudo-sequel to Dotu, taking place about 5 years after the defeat of planet doom and showing us the lives of the pilots post Voltron before they're called back into action for a returned Lotor, now half cybernetic! Like Dotu, it got two seasons, but at least this one had an overarching plot instead of the episodic style voltron had originally This show is actually the reason for many of the characterizations we have today! V3D gave Pidge his child genius status, Hunk his gluttonous meat head one, and even the mystical nature of the lions! Not to mention we get much more world building and even a map of the Denubian Galaxy. The basic plot is as follows: the original 5 pilots are living their lives post Voltron until Lotor escapes the prison he's been held in for 5 years. The Galaxy Alliance is now overseen by an AI driven robot named Amalgamous, as he's the amalgam of the thoughts of every leader in the 900 planets that make up the alliance, who for some reason seems to have it out for Voltron. While the team tries to do what's right, they work with a reformed King Zarkon who's been aiding the alliance ever since his defeat, though Lance doesn't seem too taken with that idea. Like I said early, the animation is really part of its time but the plot itself isn't even bad. I've been lucky to find places to watch it, and it's genuinely kept me entertained even though it still has its faults

VLD Missed Opportunities

Now, I ain’t dissing on the creators. I’mma keep this low salt.  And I understand, with limits and licensing, there’s only so much they could do. But.  There were missed opportunities in VLD. One such is my favourite thing to think about.  Katie Pidge Holt being an alien. In DotU, Pidge was from Balto.  Same for VF. But in VLD, Pidge is from Earth.  And Keith got the status of alien ninja team member. Though, he didn’t know it.  And don’t get me wrong, I like the thing with Keith having Galran heritage. 

Continuing on, Pidge could’ve been alien, too.  Two things stand out with her.  She’s super adaptable. She can work with different tech as if she grew up with it. Altean, Galran, even Olkari tech. I know we’ve seen Hunk work with Galra stuff, too (the lift that took him down to the yellow lion in episode one), but that can also be written as him having the basic understanding of machines and less about a technology standing. And we saw Lance try to make repairs on the castle in I believe season 2 episode 4 (Greening the Cube), but it didn’t go well and Pidge took over like it was nothing.  That’s the main thing. But there’s something else I wish we got more of.  Pidge seeing Olkarion’s past in I believe season 8 episode 4 (Battle Scars).  I don’t think we got anything else of that afterwards and no full explanation.  But these two things are interesting points.  And. Let’s face it. Alien Pidge would be an interesting concept.  Especially if there were changes.  Such as if Keith knew he was Galra from the start and looked it. That could play into trying to help Allura come to terms with not all Galra being loyal to Zarkon.  And if Pidge was the one who didn’t know she was alien and as they go through on their missions, she learns more and more about herself. 

Don’t know.  Just some musing and ideas with this.

I know you hc Keith as east-asian, with his dad having his DotU counterpart's background. But I saw that Keith's weapons seem to be indian, nepalese and egyptian inspired, with 2 out of 3 being south-asian. Would you see that as supposed to be some "hint" or just that they happen to suit his style well enouch with no other connection?

So far as the real-world inspiration behind vld’s weaponry goes, I will without question bow to the expertise of @elfgrove, who has two unparalleled posts identifying both of Keith’s blades; they've confidently (and I’d have to assume correctly) pinned Keith’s bayard down as a lengthened indian katar due to its distinct grip shape, while his marmoran blade is damn near a perfect match for a Roman pugio when in its more compact knife-form, and a hybrid (ha) of a Roman falcata and an Egyptian khopesh when in its elongated sword-form.

As to what the vld artists intended, I certainly think that the roman influence with regard to Keith’s marmoran blade is deliberate for the fact that it’s present in both the compact and extended forms, not to mention that the galra Empire as a whole is depicted with a definite roman undercurrent. The amalgamation of falcata with khopesh might be down to the Roman Empire having had historical ties to Egypt, it might—as elfgrove said—be a nod to the fact that cats were deified in ancient egypt and many of the galra possess visually feline traits, or it might simply be the artists’ attempt to create more of a fantastical otherworldly vibe for Keith’s alien heirloom,,, it’s honestly hard to say. The katar, I think, is the most deliberate choice of the lot due to that hilt being so distinct, so potentially that could be a quiet nod from the artists to Keith being south asian? But truthfully, I think that’s a generous perspective: more likely, they wanted a range of blade designs that were distinctly different from one another due to the bayard taking the form of a sword several times over⁠ throughout the show—Keith, Lance, Lotor, Zarkon, and Alfor—and ultimately there are only so many ways one can design a pointy stick (particularly in 2d animation where the last thing anyone wants is an overly convoluted design that’s difficult to keep consistent frame-to-frame) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'll go with VLD Lotor, though I could do this for all of his iterations.

1. First impression:

Relieved and amused.

I never much liked DotU Lotor for a variety of complex reasons, though I found him amusing in the made-for-US season of DotU that had Merla in it. Voltron 3rd Dimension and Voltron Force doubled-down on the worst ideas for the character, so I was hoping that he'd never show up in VLD. The cliff-hanger in S2 had me anxious because I really didn't want to see another round of stalker space barbarian.

VLD S3 had a great introduction for him, honestly the best intro for all iterations of his character, including the comics. It was easy to see that he wouldn't be another gross stalker space barbarian and that was a relief.

2. Impression now:

Voltron DOTU never mentioned lotors mother. While go lion had him be half altean half galra with his father killing his mother when he was young. That doesn't nesecarily apply to DOTU. I find it intresting that lotor looks a lot like a near universe drule. I wonder if his mother is a near universe drule. Zarkon doesn't look like any other druels with him being a royal maybe he has problems with recesive genes. Given zarkon sits down most of the time he might have some health problems. I could see a near universe drule brought in to add some gentic diversity and give a healthy prince. This is just a theory. The main evidence is the voltron from days of long ago handbook mentions the similarties between lotor and near universe druels. Just some thoughts I had.

You know, I once read that the VLD crew always planned to do the Lion Swap and the the characters end up in their original lions from DotU.

But, like, if that was the plan all along…WHY THE FUCK WOULD THEY HAVE SEASON 2 FOCUS ON SHIRO BONDING WITH THE BLACK LION AND SO GIVE SO MUCH SPOTLIGHT TO KEITH AND RED’S RELATIONSHIP!?!?!?!?!?

And the Paladins sure are lucky that Zarkon was out of commission in Season 3, otherwise he would have snatched Black from Keith with zero resistance. The boy didn’t even want to pilot Black.

its honestly so ridiculous to me how they spent copious amounts of time establishing shiro’s strong connection to the black lion and how he had to fight for it and keith’s connection to the red lion and her protectiveness over him and they like. jettison all of that post-s2 😭. IT SUCKS ASS. why would you spend so much time developing this if youre gonna chuck it away??? its mindboggling. the lion switch messed up sm bc i really couldnt believe any of the swapped paladins had as strong a connection to their new lions than their old ones. terrible clone arc, shouldve left keith and lance in red and blue, allura should’ve been black paladin not only because shes shown time and time again to be a resilient leader for the alliance and has acted in tandem with shiro but as a narrative arc its really compelling to have allura be in the same lion that zarkon had…what is the black lion’s allegiance if it still felt something for zarkon in s1? do the lions have moral codes? or are they ride-or-dies for their paladins irrespective of their actions? how would allura feel having the same lion as shiro (someone she respects) and zarkon (someone she loathes)? LIKE COME ON!

i get the reference they wanted to make to dotu, but the issue lies in that these characters are built for very different intentions in the reboot, so trying to force them into their previous molds doesn’t cut it BECAUSE IT WASN’T REALLY CONSIDERED HOW YOU GET FROM A TO B. and it just sabotages everything

Let's Rewind! Toast watches Voltron: Defender of The Universe (1984)

I now have access to pretty much every animated version of Voltron and now after around 7 years of being a Voltron fan and amateur archivist, I'm finally sitting down to watch (or rewatch) every Voltron show to see how it's grown over its legacy, starting with Dotu!

Season 1, Episode 1 - Space Explorers Captured

Starting off strong, the intro is pretty cool in my eyes, no wonder this was burned into so many kids heads when it was airing It also reminds me of Danny Phantom and how the backstory was in the opening, same thing here to get into the action lol

It's Hunk and Keith! NOT, the first shots we "see" of them aren't actually them! It's reused footage from Vehicle Voltron of the characters Jeff and Rocky, you can tell by the uniforms (and y'know faces)! This feeds my hc that the boys originally were part of the explorer though >:D

I love the way this art style, or like any 80s-90s anime, draws space, it's so pretty like CMON Also, I never realized that the boys got to Arus WHILE it was being taken over, I swear I remembered that Arus was already a wasteland so-to-speak by the time they got there

GOD SVEN'S DOPEY ACCENT IS SO NICE TO HEAR, I'VE MISSED IT SO MUCH I did notice that the city destruction image was later reused for Balto, which in the original GoLion anime is from Earth's destruction! NOT THE EIFFEL TOWER JUST BEING DESTROYED WHILE KEITH IS SAYING THE ARUSIANS GOT TO SAFETY MY GOD I KNOW TOO MUCH

First look at the pilots! Very 80s from what I think the vibe is, but also very personalized! Knowing their character traits, it fits them pretty well for the most part

"This isn't the first time [the team] has been in a tight spot" NOT THE FIRST TIME, YOU SAY? INCH RESTING

"[There was a legend that a castle of lions] held the secret of the super robot Voltron, Voltron could save them" YOU'RE PUTTING YOUR FAITH IN A LEGEND THAT MAY NOT EXIST?? LIKE EVENTUALLY THEY'RE RIGHT BUT OOOOO IS THE GARRISON USELESS, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE THEY ONLY SENT A TEAM OF FIVE INTO AN ACTIVE HOSTILE TAKE OVER ignoring the fact that they said they were too far to help anyway

The team literally got captured and yet the dialogue they chose was "we need to eject, it's better than crash landing, let's go!" ??? I think this was reused dialogue from episode 2 that they just plugged in

What a rad design for a villain, like he looks so fucking cool. I generally forget that he's reptilian almost vs his barbie doll looking son Maybe the subspecies of Drule he's a part of is reptilian! Holy shit Zarkon's eyes started flickering, is this guy cybernetic too??

Hunk slips off his bird and reaches for PIDGE OF ALL PEOPLE TO GRAB HIM, but somehow that doesn't dislocate the poor boy's shoulder and they both go PLUMMETING TO THE GROUND AND SOMEHOW SURVIVE THE FALL Hunk lands in a pile of bones which OW and Pidge BOUNCES OFF THE GROUND BECAUSE OF HOW HARD HE HIT IT if that doesn't kill em, fucking nothing will good god Everyone else lands fine though, bastards lmao

Pidge sees a lion statue with a castle behind it and immediately just solves part of the legend that really shouldn't be a legend, the part with the castle anyway

So the team knows of the legend, meaning they were sent on a wild goose chase for basically nothing except that they did FIND IT Fun.

I think it's funny that they're describing Voltron before the split as a defender of justice but in GoLion he was literally the most egotistical bitch that after taking down basically everyone in a fight to prove his strength he got nerfed into those five lions

Time for an episode of Voltron: The Third Dimension!

Fifty billion inhabitants in the moon-cities!?!?! No thanks. That is way too people-y for me. Oh look, it’s Haggar. Bringing to life robot dinosaur things. I mean. It’s effective. “Yes, by all means, go away. Far away.” Yeah, I feel that on a daily basis with folks. I love the Voltron force, but dudes, I feel like I’m vibing with the space witch more.

Yeah sure, strike a black hole to mess with the gamma energy or whatever. That sounds safe. I get that it seemed to go well for the team, but still. It does not feel safe. Well, whatever. It worked.

I don’t trust Lotor with a white flag… Oh look, he wants to return Zarkon. Can’t he just keep him? “I’m in agreement with blue boy here.” Lotor, was that a reference to Lance’s uniform having been blue back in DotU? Or is he just colour blind and thinks red looks blue? Allura’s plea for Lotor to not attack the Troika moons because there are innocent folks and children there. Honey? Did you really expect him to reconsider at that? Sweetie, bless your heart.

Amalgamus really considering the destruction of the robot lions. Does he not remember the trial? It’s been pointed out that, more or less, Voltron doesn’t belong to the alliance or serve it. They serve the universe. Jeez. Someone scrap this calculator. Oh wow. This show actually says the word “massacre”?! A children’s show actually says that word?! I’m amazed.

“Will the alliance leaders decide to destroy the Voltron lions?” They have no right. Right? The lions aren’t theirs to do with as they please. And these people are dense, ready to make the sacrifice. Do they really think if the lions were destroyed that Lotor will just turn over a new leaf, be good, and no longer attack anyone? They have not seen many shows to think it’s a good idea. Bad guys NEVER play fair.

Pidge reminding Amalgamus that the lions don’t belong to him, but to Arus. Yeah! You tell him, Pidgey! Oh… Allura is ready to turn the lioons over. And Lance being pissed about things. It’s intriguing that Lance feels that they’re betraying the lions by turning them over to be destroyed. And you know what? He’s right. Honestly, I side with Lance on the matter big time.

Poor Red having to be towed. Almost seventeen minutes in, I really hope that even without her pilot, Red decides to act out, refusing to give up. C’mon, baby! Reflect your pilot! Follow his lead and not be down with this bullshit! “I keep thinking that somehow someone’s gonna stop it.” Hunk, babe. Lance is unaccounted for, with reasons, and the lions might be sentient? If Lance isn’t secretly in Red ready to cause trouble and be defiant, then I bet the lions are gonna make their opinions on the matter known. Oh, Lance wasn’t in Red at the moment. But he’s definitely fighting to defend her! Good job, Lance! Show that loyalty! Lance getting shot down, my draw dropped. And Lance is pissed with the others, calling them ex-friends.

Okay, watching the lions be wrecked and dismantled, I actually feel like I wanna cry. “What have I done?” I dunno, Allura. Maybe just betrayed the lions who were nothing but loyal and faithful to you guys and doomed the universe?

Oh. Voltron lights just shot off. Hoo boy… I wonder where they went.

Yeah, it’s no surprise that Lotor’s fleet is turning back around and not gonna be destroyed. Amalgamus should have seen this coming. He. Is. Flawed. Stupid calculator.

The team better find a way to make things up to Lance and then find out where those lion lights went and make it up to them and get them back. Otherwise? Bye bye Alliance HQ.

Okay, all in all? I'm intrigued. I may have a vague idea of what kinda happens in the next episode due to some clips shown in the past in a discord server, but, we'll see on the next time I watch an episode. Also, as much as I vibe with Haggar's little comments, I also vibe with Lance's wit and logic. The man holds the brain cell it seems. Good for him.
