dr:t pride headcanons, written edition

so i’ve recently received some asks about whether or not i headcanon any of the characters from dr:togami as lgbtq+ or not and, as a very queer person, you know i do! 

since i’ve been struggling to put out art recently, i figured that i’d take the time to write down my pride headcanons in honour of pride month! i want to apologise for not being in the proper headspace to post even though i promised i would, i hope this gets my thoughts across in some form!

(if i neglect to mention anyone just assume that they’re either straight or unlabeled!)

and if i word this post firmly, please remember that these are my opinions and you’re well within your right to disagree so long as you’re respectful. 

spoilers? maybe. gay people below the cut!

so let’s start it off with our volume 1 cast!-

byakuya: gay & gender-fluid. now, i feel very strongly that during the events of the novels he was still far far into that closet, but believe me it’s there. remember when he had to dress up as that nun? and how he was vibing in that convent, a place that celeste mentions doesn’t allow men? he was very trans in that chapter. and let’s not even mention polaris p. polanski. this kid is so transgender it makes my eyes hurt.  

shinobu: lesbian. she’s a lesbian. this is partly due to projection and partly due to the way that she describes female characters, but i’m not gonna tether my opinions to canon so i’ll leave it at that. i feel like she’s actually a little bit of a hopeless romantic. 

satomi aoba: lesbian. i promise they’re not all lesbians, it’s just that i’m a lesbian and i love satomi. but also it’s the way that she interacts with the mole in volume 1, as if she’s moved past having patience for men. and that’s very lesbian of her. 

hiroyuki: pansexual trans man. now these are purely headcanon, but i characterise hiroyuki as not giving a damn about gender in the slightest. if he likes you, he likes you. and i don’t remember when exactly i decided to make him a trans man but i get the feeling that it’s because he’s a twin. i get that they aren’t identical but i saw the opportunity and took it, what can i say. like shinobu, i’d like to think he craves love and romance but he tends to mask his emotions with humour so you’d have to be able to read him to know that. good lad, in all. 

yuika: pansexual. they’re twins! they match! kidding, there’s more to it. now, at some point i decided that yuika would also go for personality other than gender, since she values someone who unflinchingly cares about her, especially since her fleshed out backstory in my rewrite reveals that her peers didn’t exactly treat her well. but that’s for another time.

taeko: lesbian. last one, i swear! i’d argue that taeko & yuika are slightly girlfriend-coded in the novels, but that’s beside the point. the second i read taeko’s dialogue and scenes i got hit with a strong femme-lesbian vibe. she really values femininity, she kicks ass and she’s the hyper to yuika’s calm

andou (A54) naoki: bisexual. honorable mention! he plays a bigger role in my ver. which is why he’s here. i can’t exactly put this one into words without explaining his entire character and, my god, i want this post to be brief. so just trust me on this one. once i actually post about him hopefully you’ll get it. 

and now for the dead siblings!- 

now, i’m aware of just how strict this family is, but as you all know (hopefully) you’re gay regardless of your situation, and like, mathematically there’s no way that every single one of them is straight.

ichirou: bisexual. again, this one mostly fits my characterisation of him, which i’ll elaborate on later! for now all i’ll say is that he’d be kind of nonchalant about it? like ‘oh you know, uneventful work day, saved a life, repaired an artery, kissed a man, et cetera.’ and he’s not stupid, at all, nor is he uncaring, it’s just that it’s such a natural part of him that he doesn’t question it at all. 

saburou: asexual. this only relates to my interpretation of him, which is very different from canon! he’s the type of kid to make the most out of left field, egregious sex joke imaginable only to be the most asexual person you ever did meet. 

takaya: aroace. now, if he had gotten to live longer and work his shit out he’d realise that is the definition of aroace. he, for his whole life, simply had no interest. a common experience for aromantic people (coming from an aro person!) is the classic ‘pick someone to have a crush on’ experience but in all honesty, i dont think he even did that. he simply didn’t care in the slightest and wasn’t afraid to let people know it.

Your take on V3 is so based. I basically gutted DR:T because it's... Objectively bad at tying itself into DR's timeline and if there is ONE MORE POORLY WRITTEN GODDAMN INCEST SUBPLOT I'm going to begin killing.

My second biggest issue with DR:T is the whole subplot with Suzuhiko, like, Kijo may have been an inattentive shit but he would at least known he had gotten kicked out and that it was for abusing his sibling.

That would have immediately disqualified him from being heir because if it got out, that would be disasterous PR for the Togami name.

He would have also been watching him like a hawk considering he's one of the oldest and therefore would have had a higher chance at becoming heir and he needs to be sure the heir isn't a fucking freak (derogatory).

Yeah, like Kijo would've kept tabs on all of his kids and made sure that only the real worthy ones had a chance to enter.

Someone like Suzuhiko wouldn't have made the cut at all. Canon Kijo may be shitty as one can be, but I doubt he'd condone anything relating to incest. If anything, the moment he knew of it, he would've had Suzuhiko killed.

But, drama was needed, so the whole plot of Suzuhiko was created and DR: Togami became even worse than it already was.

It could've been something so good, yet it (in my opinion) came out no better than a piece of trash. It only gave us potential for something good since it couldn't be that.

And the Imposter’s real name is Kazuya.

kazuya is a different character. i've actually mostly read dr togami at this point djdvdkjff but yeah the three of them are featured together in multiple scenes, he's another character who is called an imposter and impersonates byakuya, so it's confusing, but he's not the ultimate imposter (and also he might not even exist?? dr:t is insufferable.)

honestly, we know imposters backstory. he has no parents he has no name he's explicitly not a togami as per his island mode finale. so i don't really understand people's interest in figuring out the contrary. imposter's character is pretty clearly defined in sdr2.

dr:k is a prequel about kirigiri and her big sister yui samidare (by a different writer so its good), dr:t is a togami novel set around one of his sisters that you should read after ae AND after dr:k bc there are spoilers but its isnt well written, naegis bad day is a short abt naegi getting into hp!! dr:0 introduces two new characters who are integral to the dr universe but arent in the main series (or so you think) and should most definitely be read after dr1 or dr2 if you want to want 2 wait

As someone who likes a lot of the concepts presented by DR:T, I'm glad someone else agrees that it was kind of a letdown on so many aspects.

Fortunately, in the novels themselves, they do explicitly say that it's almost all a fabrication of the AI in Shinobu and Kazuya's minds in an effort to make Byakuya out to be some savior.

My city and my Togami OCs now that all happen to have the same name and general basis but with more complex motivations and personalities outside of paralleling THH characters.

Oohhh, cool! I myself mostly focus on Byakuya in my backstory rewrite, so I can't say I'm doing the other Togami kiddos justice. Like, it's purely about Byakuya and hom only. Though, Kijo appears to.

It's not that I don't like them, there's just not a lot of reason for me to give them devopment, so it's great to see somebody else doing that!

That said, the Togami kids do all have different personalities in my fic. They're all linked to a THH character- that was one of the only things I liked about DR:T and more parallels lile that will appear- but not all of them want to become heir.

Some are nice, some are mean and some just simply don't care... And none of that really matters to Byakuya. Like, he just wants to win. The only siblings important to him are the ones that could be a threat.

But it's cool to see that somebody else is making them in full characters! They deserve it... and if I wasn't already made multiple fics, I might've written something about them already!!

i don't think Kokichi is a Nazi i have a lot of thoughts on the subject but it's more like a shit way DR used to signal that he's a Scary Dictator than to say this guy's a real legit Nazi which...he just flat out isn't. The usage of the hat to symbolize that WAS 100% antisemitic (along with...a LOT of other writing choices in DR lmao like...DR:T Sonia my beloathed) but him as a character is not. Don't draw the hat and be careful about what tropes you're using but that's just a general rule of thumb and when in doubt ask a Jewish person. Also i don't like ougoku but that's just my onion and it's unrelated lmao i prefer (ir)oumota and gokumeno and dw you sounded fine feel free 2 ask for more clarification if u want it too
