Content warning: loud whistle at the beginning, twice.
Tristan has learned to come to the whistle entirely by imitating Yv. But you can see he has learned it–he sees me and starts moving before Yvaine does. (Yv looks in the wrong direction, first. All our cockers have had no directional hearing.)
[Video Description: Two cocker spaniels are sniffing in a large field. A whistle blows. Both dogs look up. Tristan, a black and white cocker puppy, starts bounding delightedly toward the camera. The whistle blows again, and Yvaine, a white and red cocker spaniel, begins gleefully galumphing toward the camera.
The camera wobbles a bit, I apologize.
Tristan, then Yvaine, arrive at my feet. They sit, panting happily. I keep the camera on Yvaine because I was hoping to capture a particular facial expression, but not this time. Another day.
I say “oh so good” and give Yvaine a treat, then “good boy” and give Tristan a treat.]
It's possible to steer Merlin with his ears. Scritchie the outside of his ear flap; first he tilts his head towards the scritchies, then he leans in the same direction, then finally he collapses on the scritchying hand. Unfortunately he then squishes the hand under his head, leaning so hard that the hand cannot keep scritching. Of course, it is now possible to remove that hand and scritchie the top of his head, his chin, or the other ear-flap.
