Antique Legends: Epilogue 2

Seiya: It would be terribly troubling if you were to cry endlessly over spilt milk after the fact, Anzu-san! Once you have decided, there’ll be no turning back, so do allow me to check with you one last time, just to be sure.

Seiya: —Well, anyway, this is just how it all turned out. Ibara-kun was the mastermind behind the whole incident all along, and Double Face has only been playing their part unknowingly in his self-directed monkey show.

You may not believe me when I say this, but there are no ugly truths which would bring about the destruction of any idols in this incident here—

No one will be eliminated like how GFK had been… … Well, not today, at least.

And as for Valkyrie, they just happened to be haplessly bowled over and swept along by the chain of events this time.

But still, it’s thanks to this the financial burdens Kagehira has been struggling under have been taken care of, and they seem to have come out of it as a more cohesive unit, so this should be considered a good thing for them, right?

They simply aren't fit to be idols if they’re sobbing and moaning like victims over something as trivial as this, to be honest—

Mika: Naaa~? Did I hear someone sayin’ my name?

Seiya: Oh, my? Ahaha, you are the rumoured shadow indeed ♪

Mika: Hmm? Ah~! You are—Oh! Hidaka Seiya-san! Er, thank ya kindly for all yer hard work today~?

And—eh? Why is Anzu-chan walkin’ together with Hidaka-san?

Oh, I get it now. The both of ya do belong to the P-Association, after all. Did the two of ya just get back after completin’ some work together or somethin’? It’s been a long and tirin’ night for ya, you must’ve worked really hard.

Seiya: That’s right. The same goes for you, too. What are you doing here, so late at night?

Mika: Oh, I’m here to—U~rm? How should I put it? I can’t very well say that I’m on my way to settle a debt… …

Seiya: And yet you’ve managed to say it out anyway! However, we already know about your circumstances, so there’s absolutely no need to hide it from us, you know?

Mika: Is that so? Oh nooo, ahaha… … It’s real embarrassin’ that you guys have found out about it, but yep, I’ve been bothered by money problems for quite a while now.

However, this situation is finally gonna be taken care of!

There’s someone who’s been goin’ around, helpin’ us to buy up an’ consolidate all the bits of debt into a lump sum. I’m headin’ over to meet with that person right now, to pay off the amount owed in full.

However, I'm not really sure why… That person specified the meetin’ place to be the Underground Live Stage of the ES building fer some reason. ・・・・・・That’s why I'm hurryin’ there as fast as I can right now—

Eh? Anzu-chan? Why’re we meetin’ at the Underground Stage of ES Building—yer askin’?

Even if ya ask me, I haven’t got the faintest clue why either~! It might be that person’s involved in the idol industry somehow, too?

Seiya: That’s right. That does seem to be the case. The party pulling all the strings in all the cases of fraud for which your orphanage has taken on the blame and debt for, seems to be a business rival who sees Valkyrie—

—or rather I should say COSPRO, as an eyesore.

It is my belief that another idol agency, one unaffiliated to ES, has been behind all of this—

—which is why they have managed to set up such a convincing deception of being able to offer idol training classes promising to fulfil the dreams of all the hopeful children.

Well, these are just my private speculations, of course!

Mika: Is that so? Well… … after all’s been said and done, I’m right as rain now. That’s why ya don’t have to worry ‘bout us no more, Anzu-chan. Cos’ even though our status is always wobbly, an’ we’re always havin’ our hands full with all sorta troubles,—

—we won’t ever do anythin’ that’ll betray the expectations of our fans, or disappoint the faith that all the Producers and Anzu-chan have in us, okay? I swear on it~.

Seiya: Fufufu~. Indeed. For that is the kind of person you are, Kagehira-kun.

Mika: NAAA~? Wha-what’s goin’ on? Why’s this fella bringin’ his face so close to mine… …?

Seiya: Fufu! It appears that I’ve managed to unearth a truly unexpected treasure on the stage of this Antique Market after all! That is—I’ve made the discovery of your extremely talented self, Kagehira-kun.

Mika: Eh? AH?

Seiya: You won’t let anything stand in the way of the ‘activation of your functionalities’. In fact, you wouldn’t hesitate to fulfil all the ‘functions’ requested of you even if it meant sacrificing your own life, isn’t that correct?

Hocchan has inherited my wife’s temperament along with my abilities, so it would probably be impossible for him to do something like that.

I’d once held out high hopes for Jun-kun too, since he’d already been thoroughly ‘educated’ by his parents, but that child doesn’t seem capable of forsaking his humanity at all, come what may—

—and that is why, it has to be you, Kagehira-kun. Of all the idols who are in ES, you are the only one who’s broken in the same way I am—

—the only one with the potential to become my—this ‘Super Idol Hidaka Seiya’s’—successor.

Mika: Uhn? Nnnngh~... …? Wh-what? What’s happenin’? What’s this guy goin’ on about? I don’t get what he’s sayin’ at all but he’s still freakin’ me out somehow!?

Seiya: Ahaha! Well~, you needn’t put too much thought into what I’ve said—not for now, anyway. This might just be my misunderstanding of the situation.

I haven’t any confidence in my ability to evaluate people—I’m an idol, not a Producer after all!

Besides, if we were to stand around talking any longer, everything might come to an end before we know it. Shall we hurry and make our way to the Underground Live Stage now?

Mika: Naaa~? Are you and Hidaka-san headed fer the same place I am, Anzu-chan?

Seiya: Yes, we are. However, for prudence’s sake, let’s make a final check before we leave, just to be sure, shall we?

If you continue going forth with us from this point onwards, Anzu-san, you might be forced to bear witness to unspeakably unpleasant things with your very own eyes.

If you would wish to live a normal, happy life, there is absolutely no need for you to subject yourself to a reality uglier than any nightmare—which is, the truth hidden in the deepest part of the darkness.

If none of that matters to you, and you don’t mind witnessing reality as it is—even if it means getting hurt!—then you are welcome to join us.

Kohaku: Seriously? You’ve been chattin’ with Jun-han and the others happily all this time too, haven’t ya?

Mika: Yep. But then Jun-kun is part of Eden, one of the ES Big Three, y’know? So I feel kinda intimidated when talkin’ with him in public—

It feels like the people watchin’ us are thinkin’, “Who does that fella think he is? He’s so arrogant to be chattin’ with the amazin’ Jun-sama like that,” and so on… ...

Kohaku: Hoho~. So what yer sayin’ is—since Crazy:B’s ranked so much lower than ya, yer able to speak to me without needin’ to stress at all—is that it?

Mika: Wehhh~! No, NO! That ain’t my meanin’ at all! Quit sayin’ such nasty things on purpose, won’t ya?!

Kohaku: Hmph. If yer ain’t lookin’ to be stung till yer numb and twitchin’ all over, you better stop treatin’ me like I’m some newly-hatched baby chick, got that?

Friendships are supposed to be made up of equals, aren’t they? So there ain’t any reason fer you to be so chummy and grossly nice to me all the time!

Mika: Eh~? I get it, but this is just how I am with 2Wink too, y’know? I just get the urge to spoil the younger ones with kindness sometimes… ...

Back in the orphanage, I was always doin’ that as “Mika-nii” too.

Kohaku: —Whoops. It would’ve been nice if we could’ve continued chattin’ merrily here, but God’s bein’ real nasty today too. That looks like my cue to step up to bat.

Mika: Eh? What do ya mean by ‘yer cue’? Are you performin’ on stage today too? The Antique Market was only just over. Ain’t that really tough on ya?

Kohaku: Well, we’re built different from ya; you could say we specialise in bein’ hardworkin’ and light on our feet.

However, that bein’ said, our performance has already ended. We’re just takin’ care of the housekeepin’ and tyin’ up loose ends now.

Mika: Naaa~? Ya mean, like ‘Cheki’? (1)

Kohaku: Uhh, what do ya mean by ‘cheki’? Is that supposed to be some kinda idol term? I really need to keep myself up to snuff with my learnin’.

If I keep carryin’ out these blood-stained jobs, I’m gonna forget I’m an idol, sooner or later.

Mika: Huh? ... … ‘Blood-stained’?

Why YOU should vote Mika in the @enstars-sexyperson-polls poll!!!

What makes a man "sexy"? What is that mysterious, ever-elusive quality that can turn adorable into attractive? This is, naturally, a question with no objective answer. But if one were to try real hard, a possible conclusion can be reached.

To start with, what makes a man "sexy"? The obvious answer is "sex appeal". A man who dresses well, elegantly,

where appeal is kept in this apparent tidiness, this put-together image he presents. A suit and tie, with a blazer draped elegantly over his shoulders, loafers and slacks, elegant shirt tucked in, added attraction levels in the form of suspenders, and a dog (to imply he is good with animals, a trait most attractive). For an extra point, a focus on the sole of his shoe, perfect to be stepped on. In the middle image, this elegance is added to in the form of a dated yet chic suit, layered and accessorised with pearls and a hat, the lapels giving off an aura of a man with a fortune to his name, his outstretched hand inviting and open. The same motif of an inviting outstretched hand is in the left-most image, the Valentine's event card. Of course, just in being a Valentine's card, his being sexy is a given. Gloves, suits, blazers and dress-shirts, the only skin we can see is a coquettish view of his wrists. Truly, the suit makes the man in this case. But that's not all there is to Mika's sexiness.

Perhaps sex appeal is a man who shows off skin in the most delicate of ways,

not unlike a fanciful bird who shows off its colorful feathers to impress a mate, Mika's FS2 shows his brightness, his identity. What is more appealing than a man sure of his style? Though colourful and bright, he accessorised with safety pins, DIY chains, little bears and rings, platform shoes with wings and a devil's tail. Can we say punk? Truly the little devil; different from the coquettish flash of the wrist in the previous images, in this he presents a bolder view: his knee and leg peeking from torn jeans, his jacket falls seductively to reveal the gentle skin of his shoulders, and, finally (and most importantly), his middle.

The way in which his tummy is shaded implies far more than one might assume at first glance. There is no roughness of hard abs, no unpleasant and uninviting cold. Indeed, it would seem that Mika's stomach is not flat, that a smidge of squishy fat is stored in it. Truly, I ask of you: what could possibly be sexier, than a man's soft tummy? And it's not just about his FS2.

Indeed, as we can see in the image above, Mika's casual spring-summer outfit has a certain detail to it one might describe as "slutty", which is to say, an extension of "sexy". That's right. Under that sleek black jacket, he is wearing nothing short of a sleeveless shirt with a high neckline. Now you, dear reader, tell me if you find that unsexy! His bare arms have even found their way into a 3* card,

And despite it not showing as much skin (though, as stated above, there is no need for a man to show skin to be sexy), the Antique Legend is also one exuding sex appeal. Simply look at that posing, the sultry, yet laidback appearance it gives him, the coy position of the wrist holding a fan, one of few cards to bring his full body into the picture.

And how could I ever hope to describe Mika's sex appeal without mentioning the Black-Haired Living Doll card?

What can be sex appeal? It can be a man with his hands covered in blood, a man dressed like an affluent and powerful figure, yet presented in a most debased manner. Decadence at its finest. With the blood decorating his collar and caking his fingers, Mika presents the image of sexiness through danger. It is almost mythological in nature, as many of the most dangerous beings have been presented as attractive to the point of being irresistible - from Slavic mythological beings "so beautiful that it was only natural they were evil" to Biblical demons "so beautiful to tempt you", to Oscar Wilde's Dorian Gray "so beautiful, oh, the horrors he must have done to achieve it". It is sex appeal through fear, through inhumanity.

And if, to you, sex appeal is less human, but more benevolent? Perhaps, sex appeal lies in animal features mixing with human. Mika has that, too.

Of course, when talking about Mika's appeal, one must also mention his defining feature, the very thing that sets him apart from the rest of the cast. As Keito Hasumi said when evaluating ex-Valkyrie, Mika's eyes are his defining feature.

His mismatched eyes pull people in, his visual charm lies in these eyes. But it's not just the heterochromia, although it is undeniably a core part of his design, it is their shape. Mika's face is designed to be sharp, and this includes his eyes. This is, of course, to contrast Shu's softer features. This is symbolic. These symbols, too, are sexy.

Not quite a Madonna-Whore complex, but Valkyrie is based on this opposition. Where Shu is soft, Mika is sharp. Where Shu represents the virginal goddess Astraea, Mika represents the base, the carnal, the filthy.

The sex appeal.

Furthermore, in the very story "Astraea's Atelier", this is corroborated, as Leo mentions that Mika's very art leans into the erotic. He knows what he is doing.

Beyond Mika's eyes, we must mention his other defining feature. Not as unique as his eyes, but important all the same - his singular fang that pops out at random.

Although as seen above, all four of his canines are emphasised, it is most often that only one is actually shown in cards and in the 3D models. This is, of course, charming, an almost teasing peak into his physiognomy, a hint to the fact that he could, should he wish, tear your flesh apart with his teeth. This, too, is sex appeal.

A natural progression from looking at his teeth is to look at his tongue. Though the common "blep" is certainly cuter than sexy, and Mika has plenty such cards, there is much to say about the way in which he sticks out his tongue in these, as if provoking, teasing. This is not just a playful or mocking gesture, and he knows as much.

Finally, what else can "sexy" be? Must it be tied to appearance only? Or does it go deeper than that? Is "sexy" not also the way a man carries himself? Is it not also his skills, his hobbies, his very personality? Is "sexy" not the sum of a man, but merely one trait, tied only to the visual senses? Is Mika not sexy in the way that he dances, spins and twirls, skilfully and gracefully? Is he not sexy in the way that he shows his intelligence in the weirdest ways, was he not sexy for reading the Mabinogion in Middle English? Is he not sexy for getting over his own shyness when it comes to speaking on television and radio shows because of Shu's own shyness? Is he not sexy for the fact that he collects creepy and scary posters to help him sleep better? Is he not sexy for the fact that he dumpsterdives, finds plushies, fixes and names them? Is he not sexy for being a weird little freak who likes eroguro and is suspiciously fine with murder and violence? Is Mika Kagehira not sexy?

Mika's sex appeal also lies in one very important aspect of his character, one very dear to me, and that's why I saved it for last. Mika speaks in a non-standard dialect, and his production is thickly accented. I have already ranted about the way this aspect subverts many tropes related to characters with audible "hick" accents, but this is not about design and tropes, this about sex appeal. Can you really listen to Mika speak, the way he sometimes slurs his words and speaks through a pout, the way his words blend and the way his production is impacted by his dialect, and say that this is not sexy? There is nothing sexier than a non-standard production. A vote for Mika is a vote against prescriptivism and linguistic chauvinism. Vote Mika. For your local linguist MikaP (me).

To sum up, while Mika very well could be described as "cute", this does not negate the fact that he can also be described as "sexy". Whether looking at it from a strictly visual point or looking at Mika as a whole character, he undeniably has a certain sex appeal to him. Present in all aspects of his character, from his sharp facial features, to his personal and Valkyrie-adjacent style, to the way he speaks, behaves and interacts with the world. "Sexy" is not a word with only one definition, nor is it a word limited in its usage, "sexy" is a word that merely aims to describe a person with sex appeal, who appeals to people, who draws people in, and it is my scholarly and educated opinion that Mika, in fact, carries these traits in his characterisation, no matter the fact that his sex appeal is interwoven and mingles with his cuteness. Mika is a character based on contrast and opposition, between his apparent harmlessness and freakish tendencies, between his soft-spoken and shy nature and his love for horror and gore. It is not, then, unusual to notice the contrast between his cute moments, his appearance made to appeal to the side of our brains that squeals at the sight of a kitten who can't do much on its own, and his moments brimming with eros, the sex appeal that lay dormant underneath his surface. Indeed, in a way, his sex appeal being a thing to be discovered only further emphasises his sexiness.

Madara: Ahaha~! I'm sooo sorry, Kohaku-san! I tried waylaying him as he was leaving, but I guess it isn’t surprising that his guard was up, so he managed to get awayyy!

It’s such an awful shame! I’ll regret this mistake for life!

Kohaku: Hmph. I told ya we should’ve taken care of him before goin’ up to perform on stage.

Madara: Yep! However, it seems our performance at the Antique Market was incredibly well-received yesterday—

—which led to a larger than expected audience showing up here today as well. It felt like all of them were eagerly waiting for us to appear on stage!

Whether we’re ‘allies of justice’ or idols; We have no choice but to live up to those expectations!

Kohaku: Ko ko ko ♪ It won't matter which of those two we claim to be, we would seriously be cursed to Hell and back fer it, wouldn’t we?

If ya compare us to those who’re honestly and earnestly pursuing their ideals, we're really just cheap knockoffs no matter how hard we try, right?

Madara: Yes. However, there are surely some ‘functions’ which only such vile existences like us can fulfill… …

Madara: Yep! That guy’s wayyy speedier than I thought he would be, but still, I won’t ever lose when it comes to games of tag! I am the former Captain of the Track and Field Team after all!

Stop, stay right there, you scoundrel! You’ll reap what you sow!

Mika: Errr… … What in the world is goin’ on here?

Kohaku: It would really better fer ya to keep yer nose out of it… … but I guess that’s already impossible fer you, huh? Mika-han is already involved in this, after all.

To tell ya the truth, no sooner had we finished workin’ our butts off yesterday, that we received a new assignment fer today. To be precise, you could say we received fresh confirmation of our real target this time.

Right now, we’re gonna eliminate the scoundrel schemin’ to bring down COSPRO. We’ve managed to identify him, thanks to the series of events surroundin’ that Antique Market.

Madara: Fufu~n! That’s right! And although this target is especially talented at covering his tracks and hiding, we’ve finally managed to grab him by the tail this time!

Kohaku: Exactly. At the Antique Market yesterday, Hidaka Seiya———han…, he presented a ‘treasure’ to the victorious Valkyrie, didn’t he?

That treasure turned out to be an extremely precious jewel.

Translator’s Note:

For those who are new to the game, there is a rule where the idols are supposed to refer to Anzu as Producer (from Madara’s first idol story) even though very few actually do. Madara actually stated that he would never call Anzu as Producer ever, because of his childhood friend relationship with her. That he would actually call her Producer at the end, further distancing the relationship with her, is really a very big gut punch.

If im honest really (as a fan of enstars since EN first release and have caught up with a few JP events except for like the super recent ones), I found most of the event stories and main story stuff uninteresting or just overall a headache to go through. Most of the time (through both official and fan translated) they would get me shaking my head asking "what the heck is going on??",or the story drags around that it feels both frustrating and just too boring for my brain to be able focus even, and just as I thought its gotta get better they will usually have some lame conclusion monologue going on that either my monkey brain is unintellectual to understand what's going or maybe its the writers are like that idk Im happy to see the pretty cgs though.

I would very much rather have someone summarize the stories to me even if it sacrifice for inaccuracies and biases. Ok here's an example, Antique Legends? The only thing I remember from the story is the fun interactions within Hokuto and his dad, which may be due to my bias with Hokuto but really that was the only truly entertaining part to me.

Speaking of characters I really don't care about character depth at all all I wanna see is them being cute in those little idol stories cause idol stories (yes I mean those short stories that are mostly like one - two chapter long) and scout stories are really what I look forward to the most personally cause they aren't over the top complicated or draggy like event stories and main stories, its not to say they are boring no in fact they are way more entertaining cause they make things that may seem so simple and mundane to something fun and also I love seeing them in wacky events too.

Also yes I did mention being a HokutoP though I would say I'm more of an overall drama clubP with other characters I like such as Aira and Naruchan (love calling her that personally) (and also I love every character in their many uniqueness and to be fair its just the bias demons that posses me). Now what do these guys have to do with this post? well to bring point that I know absolutely nothing about their 'complex sides' other than that they are sweet angels to me and I love seeing them in cute and funny situations, and guess what I still appreciate seeing them and hell I own a Wataru nui (planning to get a hokke one too soon) because even though yaydadad the whole war thing and his 'masks' I personally find him super fun even if I'm aware that he may just be putting on an act (plus I also have a mini white party dress for him that I make him wear whenever I went to anything fancy like my when I went to see my cousin perform on a orchestra concert).

To bring my final point I personally think that enstars best strength or interest for me is the idol / scout stories because even with their cookie cutter like surface layer personalities they manage to even be more memorable and overall fun to read. Oh and stories aside I adore most of the cards although they get bland sometimes and most of the songs are pretty good in my opinion love trickster songs muah. Anyhow thats just how I feel like enjoying the game and to be fair I prefer to enjoy it alone rather than to have a mutual around cause ye I'm that those type people who enjoy being alone and find a lot of people to be a waste of a space personally, well I have a lot in my mind currently as per usual but they most aren't enstars related so for now imma really stop myself here right now though I may come back here for more confessions idk depends on me I guess (I will also be surprised if you read through this entire thing and if you do thank you and may God bless you my good friend).
