i get now why people say erha is so sad - it's absolutely lethal because not only are you torn to shreds over the trials and tribulations of your favorite characters, but you're also forced to contend with the grey morality inherent to existence.

for example, of course i can say i hate shi mei on a surface level, but i can't actually hate him even though i want to. i can see where he approaches the story from. knowing his heritage, background, and generational trauma - he had every right to be angry. he had every right to hate the cultivation world. not going into his ActionsTM because suffice to say *gestures*

but that's the kicker, isn't it: it's so easy to pin the blame on the antagonist but meatbun writes in a way that compels you otherwise. it's so easy to hate their actions but the core conflict is not their actions - it's the corruption, greed, and exploitation inherent to all hierarchical society that drives characters to hurt others who, in turn, hurt others, who, in turn... you understand.

and those who try to do good? like chu wanning, who goes out of his way to avoid credit for kind actions because it's basic decency and he detests that kind of vulnerability? he is at the center of one of erha's most expansive tragedies, but despite it all, he tries to do good. even when it hurts him. because cultivation society is exploitative, he is misconstrued and misunderstood for others' ulterior motives. sometimes i find myself almost yelling at him - just save yourself! just be selfish for once! but of course that's not who he is, is it?

that's why erha hits hard, in my opinion. because greed and exploitation elevate while kindness and vulnerability leave you open to manipulation and tragedy. but while the greedy can change however the wind blows to save themselves, it's always the kind characters who continue to suffer - it's a byproduct of their inherent drive to help others. they could avoid it, but they care, and so they won't. not can't. won't. and the people who perpetrate the hurt? somehow, you understand the twisted things that drive them, too.

how could you not?

you see them everyday in the real world.

and you ask yourself, why is this the way things are? why can't we change it? my favorite theme of erha is also perhaps the most painful: choosing to do good even when it hurts in a corrupt society. perhaps if everyone were a little like chu wanning, we'd be in a better place. but that is idealistic and unrealistic. you are left to wonder why the world is the way it is, why people are hurt and hurt people the way they do.

the more you wonder, the more you understand why people forgive the way they do. why chu wanning forgives the way he does. it's because when you understand the complex circumstances driving society, you understand that everyone who hurts is hurting themselves. it feels cathartic to hate, but you are left hollow. understanding hurts, but somehow, it's the least they deserve, isn't it? that's just the way kindness flows.

One example of such a title is the popular web novel Dumb Husky and His White Cat Shizun (2019; originally called Er Ha He Ta De Bai Mao Shi Zun—hereafter, 2ha). (…) The book was later adapted into the TV series Immortality (n.d.; originally called Hao Yi Xing). (…) According to largely unverified rumors, the series was supposedly approved by the Chinese censorship authority in February 2021 and the date of release was then officially announced to be April 15, 2021. However, since then it has been delayed numerous times and as of April 2023, it has yet to be given a release date. The trends in posts discussed in this article additionally demonstrate the value assigned to time invested in carrying out creative activities that contribute to the maintenance of fandom unity as well as protection of the cultivated fandom experience. Despite the current lack of access to their fan object, the participants seem to exhibit characteristics typical of a devoted fandom. Fans strengthen their engagement with the fan object through performing roles of marketers and promoters. In addition, interactions among fans and with competing fandoms allow the participants to further cultivate their loyalty to the fan object. I’ve done a similar rec list here before, but always happy to do up a new one (´,,•ω•,,)♡ I’ve sorted the below based on my own ratings: all-time faves, 5 stars, 4 stars, and others I’ve heard are good but have not yet read or don’t intend to read any time soon.

I won’t go into too much detail for each and will leave out my typical rambling commentaries (my other post has enough of that *cough*) but I’ll note the genres and leave links (including to @minmoyu min’s much more detailed recs where available) for you to explore~ do watch out for the trigger warnings some of them have though (novelupdates will have more detailed tags). leaving out mxtx ones since most would be familiar with those. all art below are from fanartists on lofter, permissions for repost under the cut!

there are quite a number of titles below (and there are a lot more out there asdklfklf) but a great start would be to select based on the genres you like, and after you’ve read a few, the author’s writing styles! my quick take on the writing styles of authors I’ve read a few books of below:

huai shang: I REALLY love huai shang (*^^*)♡ she has a good balance of plot, action, humour, and mystery - and she often writes her CPs (couples) as a... very identifiable trope that I ADORE

priest: another big name in danmei and her brain is the one true galaxy brain like really plot heavy and intense and you’ll really need to focus when reading her works. another running gag for priest works is that it’s really difficult to guess who’s the top and bottom in her CPs (lmao) and her bedroom scenes (fun fact in chinese slang, these scenes are referred to as ppp or 车 “chē” literally: car) are like... blink and you’ll miss it (⁄ ⁄•⁄ω⁄•⁄ ⁄)

meatbun: ANGST QUEEN. another plot heavy author (but not as intense as priest) but she does inner thoughts and emotional scenes EXTREMELY well. a lot of 车 (opposite end of spectrum from priest) but these aren’t written for the sake of it; they actually do play a role in the plot

ok now the titles aha (disclaimer: I tend to enjoy mystery, detective, modern, and apocalyptic genres more so the titles and ratings below might are definitely skewing towards these)
