December 11, 2023 - Red-fronted Antpecker (Parmoptila rubrifrons)
Found in parts of Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, and possibly Mali, these waxbills live in forests near water and swamps. Foraging in pairs and family groups and often joining mixed-species flocks, they feed on ants, other insects, and some seeds. Little is known about their breeding behavior but their nests are large masses built from vegetation in trees above swamps or flooded areas. They are classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN due to continuing deforestation in their range.
September 18, 2023 - Black-headed Waxbill (Estrilda atricapilla)
Found in a spotty range in parts of western and central Africa, these estrildid finches live in areas with tall grass and sedges in forest clearings and around villages and roads. Foraging in flocks, often with related species, they eat small grass seeds, ants, and winged termites, picking seeds directly from grasses or from the ground. Males perform courtship displays, bobbing up and down with their feathers fluffed while holding a piece of grass. Their nests are ovals with long tube-shaped side entrances built from grass stems and flower heads in bushes. Females lay clutches of four or five eggs.
