Present: Aston Martin Car Launch
History: 2020 Chinese Grand Prix Canceled
February 12th, 2024 starts the second week of car launches. Today, Aston Martin launched its AMR24 for the 2024 season. It is another car with lots of paint, though not as brightly painted as the VCARB car.
Unlike other car launches so far, Aston Martin did end up taking the AMR24 on track at Silverstone for its shakedown where both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll got to drive the car for the first time.
In 2020, February 12th was the first of many cancelations for the Chinese Grand Prix.
The 2020 Chinese Grand Prix had originally been scheduled for April 17-19. However, due to health concerns and the outbreak of the Coronavirus, the promoters of the Chinese Grand Prix requested a postponement of the event.
This occurred days before the 2020 Formula 1 season was postponed until early July and the world went into lockdown to combat the spread of COVID-19.
As Formula 1 returned to its regularly scheduled races following the 2020 season, the Chinese Grand Prix was scheduled in 2021, 2022, and 2023 as per its contract with Formula 1. However, it would be canceled every time due to COVID-19 restrictions put in place by the Chinese government.
As of now, the Chinese Grand Prix is scheduled and highly expected to happen on April 21. With a sprint also scheduled for that weekend, it is highly probable that after four years of cancelations, the Grand Prix will make its return to the Formula 1 calendar.

Chance of thunderstorms on Sunday could lead to first wet race of 2023 in Miami | 2023 Miami Grand Prix weather
The Miami Grand Prix is scheduled for the same weekend this year as its inaugural appearance on the Formula 1 calendar in 2022, but the weather could be very different.
Hot temperatures last year on the newly-laid track surface for the temporary circuit led to low grip levels and eventually tearing up of the track itself after a weekend of F1 cars running around it.
For 2023 race new asphalt has been laid which is expected to provide more grip. If ambient temperatures are high enough then we could see significantly higher track temperatures as the new layer is darker than the old. It has also been jet-washed, further increasing its abrasiveness and potentially leading to very high tyre temperatures.
When F1 cars hit the track for the first time at 2pm local time on Friday it is expected to be the hottest time of the day with the temperature forecast to be 30C. A 20kph westbound wind go against the direction of travel for cars on the pit straight and the straights between turns eight and 11. Therefore drivers are set to benefit from a tailwind on the long back straight heading towards the final corners.
The air temperature is only anticipated to drop by one or two degrees by the time the second practice session starts at 5:30pm, with winds staying just as strong.
Third practice at 12:30pm on Saturday is forecast to take place in similar temperatures, and slightly weaker winds of the same direction coming from the United States’ East Coast only 10 kilometres away.
There is a slight chance of rain for when qualifying begins at 4pm. On Sunday the grand prix’s start time of 3:30pm is again set to be the hottest part of the day, meaning drivers can expect it to get cooler throughout the race.
However Sunday’s forecast also brings a much higher chance of rain. Recent forecasts put it as high as 66% in the local area, and therefore could see herald the arrival of rain before the race finish and the first wet grand prix of 2023.

This implies that the season will only include 22 races instead of the 23 originally planned. The Russian Grand Prix was dropped from the calendar in 2022 when top officials decided not to race in the country after its invasion of Ukraine.

F1’s arrival in Florida could be a landmark moment for the sport’s growth in America.
Exactly when a sport “arrives” in America isn’t binary, but a gradual process with pivotal moments of public awareness. Where Formula 1 currently sits on its trajectory in the States is debatable, but the direction the series is headed is undeniable.
After missing out on the 2020 F1 schedule due to COVID restrictions, over 400,000 fans flocked to the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, TX last fall. Part of that spike in interest has been thanks to Netflix’s Drive to Survive series, which is credited anytime a team principal, driver, or reporter discusses F1’s growth in recent years. The next seminal moment in the sport’s relationship with America lands this weekend with the debut of the Miami Grand Prix.
Part of a ten-year deal, Miami marks the first time in nearly four decades the US has hosted two F1 races in the same season and becomes the 11th American circuit to host a Grand Prix. Tickets sold out almost immediately with reports of a few hundred thousand on the waiting list. To echo that level of demand, on the latest F1 Nation Podcast, McLaren CEO Zak Brown stated that he had “never seen this much attention in [his] 20 years in the sport, the number of hospitality and appearance requests, celebrity guests and sponsorship interest.”
Most everyone in the series believes that Sunday will mark the next stage of America’s discovery of Formula 1. TV ratings are steadily improving on ESPN, and Miami could easily land in the top five highest-rated F1 races in US history. With the next TV deal currently being shopped around and a new Las Vegas Grand Prix down the famous Strip coming in 2023, it’s a great time to be an American F1 fan.
The Season So Far
A new set of regulations has seen Ferrari jump into the top spot, while the middle of the grid is at its most competitive point in years. Current Championship leader Charles Leclerc and 2020 title winner Max Verstappen have traded wins in the open four rounds of the season. Ferrari’s Leclerc enters the Miami weekend with a 27-point advantage. Meanwhile, Mercedes, winners of the last eight Constructors’ Titles, continue to struggle with their new 2022 car. Lewis Hamilton sits 7th in the standings after finishing 13th in Australia last time out.

Miami International Autodrome
The 19-turn Miami International Autodrome winds through the Miami Gardens and around Hard Rock Stadium, home to the Miami Dolphins. There are three straights and three DRS (Drag Reduction System) zones which should provide plenty of overtaking opportunities. The 3.36-mile circuit (5.412km) is expected to have a top speed of 198mph, making it one of the fastest tracks in F1. Both Valtteri Bottas and Pierre Gasly gave the circuit positive reviews after spending time in the simulator this week. We should be in for a very smooth surface that is designed to provide a high level of grip.
And if a brand new F1 circuit in Miami wasn’t enough, the promotion team has gone above and beyond to make this an event unlike any other on the calendar. The track starts by encircling the NFL stadium from the start/finish line through Turn 4. Passing by the Fountains and through the chicane brings the drivers into the mock Marnia complete with yachts and the visual effect of water. After a long, winding, and extremely fast section heading into Turn 11, we find The Beach which will feature two levels of cabanas, two resort-style pools, and a 24,000 square foot beach. This race will certainly have the Miami vibe.

How might rain impact Qualifying and the Grand Prix? Right now the weather forecast predicts clear skies for Friday’s practice sessions and Saturday’s qualifying runs, but there continues to be a chance of potential rain Sunday afternoon during the race.
We’ve seen a much more balanced and competitive midfield so far this season, with 18 drivers already scoring points. Alpine, Alfa Romeo, and Haas all have a car in the top ten. Which midfield team will be the quickest on a brand new circuit?
And after closing the Championship gap on Charles Leclerc last week in Italy, can Max dominate the weekend once again to pull himself and Red Bull right into the top of the standings?

Formula 1 star George Russell has been caught on camera complaining about the Australian Grand Prix in a conversation with tennis ace Novak Djokovic.
The 24-year-old Mercedes driver showed up at the Monte Carlo Masters tennis tournament in France this week to watch the Serb superstar compete.
Russell, a long-time tennis fan, watched on as the 22-time Grand Slam champion cruised past Ivan Gakhov in straight sets to make the third round.
Following the match, the Brit met up with Djokovic and the pair posed for some photos and made small talk.
'What's the stage now? Where are you guys going for the next one?' asked Djokovic.

The F1 star didn't mince words when it comes to the Australian Grand Prix and the exhausting toll it takes on the drivers
'We've got Azerbaijan next. We've just come back from Melbourne,' Russell responded.
Djokovic then questioned Russell about the recovery timeframe for drivers following the trip down under.
The F1 star then admitted what he really thinks of the event and the exhausting toll it takes on the drivers.
'Melbourne's a killer,' Russell said.
'I mean, it's probably taken a week to come back.
'We were meant to go to China next week so we've actually got a couple of weeks off. Then Azerbaijan and then the season really kicks off. Then Miami.'
Djokovic went on to slam F1 bosses for not coordinating taking drivers' needs into account with the sport's schedule.
Russell indicated that those complaints had already been made to the competition's top brass, but to no avail.

'No, no, no, we've had a few conversations about this because we are left, right and centre,' Russell says.
F1 chiefs have indeed discussed freshening up the sport's calendar as they look to lower freight costs and reduce its carbon footprint.
'I think if you look at the calendar, it makes sense to group some of the races together,' Red Bull boss Christian Horner told media in 2022.
'Whether it's some of the American races, some of the Asian races, Europe, obviously. Some of the calendar this year when you look at the geographics of it, Azerbaijan to Montreal, going to Australia for a weekend, it's about as expensive as you could make it.'

As everyone seem a little bit confused with the F1 statement let’s make a “mise au point”
F1 released a statement some minutes ago (25.02.2022), “Formula 1 statement on the Russian Grand Prix”:
The FIA Formula 1 World Championship visits countries all over the world with a positive vision to unite people, bringing nations together. We are watching the developments in Ukraine with sadness and shock and hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to the present situation. On Thursday evening Formula 1, the FIA, and the teams discussed the position of our sport, and the conclusion is, including the view of all relevant stakeholders, that it is impossible to hold the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances.

According to the official statement released by FORMULA 1 on 25/02/2022, due to the current political situation in the world, the FIA has decided to suspend preparations for the Formula 1 World Championship round in Russia previously scheduled to be held in Sochi in September 2022 because it is impossible to hold it in the current circumstances.
The agreement between the official Russian Grand Prix promoter ANO "ROSGONKI" and FORMULA 1 is suspended due to force majeure events.
The purchased tickets are not canceled – there is no need to get refunds for them now because it is still possible that the round will take place and will be held as previously scheduled.
ANO "ROSGONKI" continues its business as usual providing services to the Sochi Autodrom guests, as well as organizing and holding motorsport and other events of the federal, regional and municipal level as part of the event calendar approved.
Look at these two statements, it looks like Sochi and Ano Rosgonki don't want to use the word "canceled", to put you into perspective, Mclaren said :
McLaren Racing is in full support of F1 and the FIA’s decision to remove the 2022 Russian Grand Prix from the 2022 race calendar.
As you can see, the reason behind the suspension of the contract between Sochi and F1 is war, it is described as "a majeure event", F1 is totally in is right to do so.
Additionally, FIA suspended all preparations for the Grand Prix, which doesn't really indicate the wish of going there later. McLaren, who was in the meeting of the decision to suspend/remove the Grand Prix, totally affirms the Grand Prix has been removed.
Personally, I think F1 is not going to race in Sochi, but they phrased their statement like that for legal and contractual reasons. F1 is a world of business, well every sport is a world of business, and be careful with the words you use if everything.
For Sochi, of course they are going to hold to this idea that the Grand Prix can happen and that they won't give people their money back.

Mid-Week Motorsport Headlines - 22nd September 2021
F1
Aston Martin have confirmed that they will retain the same line up for 2022. It has worked pretty well for them during what has been a tough year, Vettel has been reborn in some ways, and produced some great races, whilst Stroll is continuing to grow as he races in F1. I wonder how much longer Sebastien will stay in the sport.
In further Aston Martin news, Martin Whitmarsh will join the team to oversee its operation. He will report directly to the team’s owner, Lawrence Stroll, whilst watching over Otmar Szafnauer, who runs the teams on track work. His previous time in F1 was not super successful, when he ran McLaren, at a time when it got so close to another title, without quite getting it done. He has done other work since then, and could be another useful aide, in bringing the team to the forefront of the sport.
IndyCar
The 2022 schedule has been revealed, which in a lot of ways is similar to this year’s one. It does start a bit earlier, with its first race in February since 2004, and there is now just 1 race at Texas, which I think we can all agree was the right move. Rather surprisingly, there will be only 1 race at Detroit too, which we had all got used to being a doubleheader. This is probably as a result of TV timings. Iowa back on the calendar is a massive plus, as it is a fantastic oval, and Laguna Seca could be a thrilling finale, if this year is anything to go by. Overall, with 14 races on network NBC, the future is looking up for IndyCar.
Honda clinched the manufacturers title at the Firestone Grand Prix, their 10th in the sport. It is not a surprise really, given the pace of Chip Ganassi Racing this year, and Dale Coyne Racing too. Add to that the slight demise of Penske, compared to what we usually see, and it all makes sense. That being said, it could all change for 2022.
MotoGP
Lecuona is very annoyed with KTM for not allowing him to ride in the Misano test, instead favouring the rookies who will join the team next year. I can see why the team has done it, to try and help them get up to speed for 2022. I think the anger more comes from the decision to drop Iker in the first place.
Dovizioso has said that Quartararo is doing crazy things on the Yamaha, in order to have the pace he has got. He also said that his bike is very particular, and can’t understand where it differs from the factory bike. Chances are there is a major difference, as everyone who has run that bike all year, have found it difficult to adapt to it.
Rossi believes that MotoGP in Italy will be fine once he has left. With the emergence of Bagnaia and Bastiannini, you can see where he is coming from, as there shouldn’t be a vacuum of talent in Italy after he leaves. I am sure that some fans will leave, simply because they only watched the sport for 1 man, but hopefully most are more committed MotoGP fans, and will stay for the future.

F1 2022 calendar in full with record-breaking 23 races confirmed with new Grand Prix added | F1 | Sport
Formula One have now released their full schedule for the 2022 season with a record-breaking 23 races scheduled to take place. After a shortened schedule in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, F1 returned this season with a jam-packed schedule.
There had originally been 23 races scheduled for the 2021 season, but the Shanghai Grand Prix was postponed for a second consecutive season.
