How Red Queen Characters Prepare their Meals: College Student Edition
Mare: Would have a notable amount of coupons in her wallet. Well informed with food promos in grocery stores. Would stock up on potatoes, beans, bread and peanut butter spread. Has a cabinet filled with spices that sonetimes make her food taste great or a spicy, confused mess.
Cal: Would have weeks worth of meal preps in his fridge. Cabinets filled with coffee beans and protein powder. He is the type to wake up at 4:30 in the morning, throw his meal prep in the microwave and chug down his protein shake. If he feels sad or is looking for a reward, he would open his dessert drawer filled with all of his favorite treats that are nowhere near healthy. (Gotta treat yo self).
Maven: Would either has the fanciest meals money could buy or considers a couple shot of espresso and a few puffs from his cigar as a meal. Dude has no time for cooking since he is too invested in his studies and sh#t talking about his brother to cook but when he does, he'll just heat canned soups and toasts some bread.
Evangeline: Has a personal chef that cooks 5 🌟meals for her and her lovely girlfriend while they sip their fruit shakes and gossip about their cranky professors and shabby classmates.
General Farley: Is the one responsible for Mare's grocery habits, as she is the one who taught her where to buy her food. Has her fridge filled with meats, potatoes, vegetable and a few bottles of red wine. Has cooking skills that would get her a thumbs up from Gordon Ramsey himself.
Kilorn: Goes to Mare's drom to eat her food, sleep on her bed and raid her snack cabinet. In exchange, he brings her boxes of fresh seafood and drinks on weekends. When he doesn't visit Mare, he mostly eats chowder with his favorite fish seller at the wet market.

Healthy Homemade Teething Biscuits
Bundled child snacks, for example, rusks, child rolls and child  Healthy Homemade Teething Biscuits, ought not shape part of your child's eating routine, as they might contain loads of sugar.

Second Time’s a Charm? pt III
(pt i) (pt ii) (pt iv)
Without warning I follow him and Cal scrambles to follow. He blessedly keeps quiet as we make our way to the caf. Or more specifically the door leading to the stage, except we only needed to get under it. We were responsible for providing an exit from the caf if we needed to avoid anyone in the room and get out quickly.
There was a reason I was responsible for this. I easily twist through the passage unlike Cal who curses after bumping his head for the third time. This time I don't snicker. The first time he'd turned bright red and as satisfying as it had been it was wasting time.
The passage comes to a stop and this is the difficult part; opening the hatch. It was well out of my reach and a ladder was usually used but it wasn't here now like I thought it would be. "Fuck," I breathed. I hear a louder 'shit" behind me as Cal takes this in as well. "Who the hell took out the ladder?"
"You've been here before?" I ask, too surprised to keep the silent treatment up.
"Yes," is the only reply he gives without any further explanation.
I grimace at the thought of my next words, of what would have to be done. "I need you to boost me up."
He whips his head at me. "Relax," I snap. "I already got my cootie shot if that's what you were worried about."
His nostrils flare. "That's not what I'm worried about."
Oh? "So what is it then?"
He stares at me like I'm an idiot. I gesture for him to get out with it. He sighs and mutters something under his breath. I tilt my ear at him in an exaggerated movement. "I'm sorry, I didn't hear that Tiberias. Could you speak a little louder?"
"You could get hurt."
I make a sound between a laugh and scoff. "I'm sure that would haunt you for all your days, now hurry."
"Fine," he grinds out. "But it's your funeral."
You're already dressed for it, I think.
"Oh please, a little fall won't hurt me, I've had worse."
He kneels and I place my foot in the cradle of his arms. "On the count of three," I tell him. "One, two-- wait!"
"What?" he asks. "Oh seriously, right now?" he huffs out as I take out my phone. I shoot him a glare. "It's dark and unless you have fucking night vision then how else do you expect me to see?"
"You got a new phone," he murmurs before snapping back to the task at hand. I shift uncomfortably. I didn't expect him to remember but he did.
I shine the light in his eyes and he recoils. "Good it works, now get down."
His eyebrows lift suggestively and I smack him. "Not that like that you dirty minded creep."
I struggle to find my balance in his arms this time while holding the light. The sensation of my skin on his isn't helping either. "One," I begin, "two, three!" He lifts me up and and I shine the light upwards. There it was, the handle to the hatch. I push against it as hard as I can but it won't budge. Again, again. This time I hear a creak and with a final shove it opens. I let out a little cheer as Cal lowers me back down. He smiles as well. "Nice job, I guess."
"Mhmm. You did okay too. Now let's go."
He chuckles at my reluctant praise.
That was only one of our tasks. Next were the fog machines. There should be four in the caf, each in a different corner which was a little more difficult. But there was two of us so it should be quite easy.
We get in the line to enter and a girl at the door hand us our blue bracelets that grace the wrist of everyone inside. "So what are you two supposed to be?" she asks.
"I'm Zeus and he's--"
"Hades," he cuts in looking at me with puzzlement. Hm. He was the god of fire? I thought he got back from a funeral with all that god-awful black. It also happened to be very distracting.
"Huh," the girl says. "That's an odd couple's costume."
"Oh no she's not--"
"Really, I would never--"
"Never, really? That's--"
"Okay well enjoy the dance," she says a little too loudly as if despairing of us. "Next!" I hear her shout as we enter. Luckily the darkness conceals my flush. "You take the far end and meet me by the snacks table." He nods slowly, still reeling I assume. "Nice position."
"Really? I chose it because after all this I'm feeling a little hungry."
He laughs loudly. "I'd forgotten about that appetite of yours. See you later, Barrow"
As I make my way to the first machine I realize I've been grinning ever since I walked away. I try and fail to to wipe it away.
Slinking amongst the shadows is a specialty of mine so it's fairly easy to get to the machine. A soft blanket of mist covers the floor and I cackle to myself. It was about to get much more interesting in here. I instructed Cal to set them to medium. High would be way too much and there was four of them. Plus I needed it to take a while so Maven and Thomas could arrive. Hopefully Shade, Farley and Kilorn were all doing well.
I move onto the next machine as I scan for Cal. I see him finishing up on his second one and heading towards the snack table. Somehow he senses my stare and turns. I pull my gaze away and ahead of me to see a chest slam into mine. "Shit!" the person exclaims. "I'm sorry, I wasn't looking where I was--" I look up to see Will gazing at me with shock. Punch drips off the both of us and it smells of alcohol. "Uh...hey, Mare," he says after what feels like forever of us staring at each other.
"Hey," I croak. I rush to clear my throat. "Hey, uh, how's it..going?" He laughs awkwardly. "Well we're both covered in what I'm sure is ninety- nine percent alcohol, which again, I'm really sorry for."
"It's my fault too, I was--"
"Looking for someone?"
"Yeah..."
Ugh this is so awkward. Please earth swallow me now.
"Hey, babe," Cal says behind me. He puts an arm around me and smiles casually. "Who's your friend?"
"Just leaving actually," Will says. He smiles at me. "It was nice seeing you again, and I'm sorry..for everything." The words have an effect on us both.
When he leaves, I pull myself out from Cal's grip. He wipes his hands on his pants and I wrinkle my nose. "Was that necessary?"
"No," he replies. Cal begins to shrug off his jacket and hands it to me. Before I can protest he stops me. "It looks like you murdered someone."
"Thanks," I mutter. The punch was drying now and was all sticky. Cal sees this of course.
"I guess you just got yourself into--"
"Don't fucking finish that--"
"a sticky situation," he finishes with a goofy smile. I sigh loudly. "More than you know," I mutter.
My phone buzzes and I take it out, doing my best to not get punch all over it. "Shit!" I exclaim when I read the text.
"What is it?" Cal asks. He sneaks a glance at my phone.
"Kilorn was caught. Apparently a group of kids heard him coughing and reported him after they found him tampering with the lights." I was concerned for Kilorn and pissed at myself for not only not thinking about that but jeopardizing this plan.
"Who texted you then?"
"Shade. They finished up and were coming to check on him when they saw the principal walking him out." I groan in frustration.
I text him back quickly.
"What are you typing?"
"I'm telling them to get Kilorn out and take him home. He's sick and I should've insisted on him staying home.
"Soo, what now? "
I look up as if the ceiling held the right answer. Putting an end to this and going home would be the easiest thing to do. But it was something of a tradition for Shade, Kilorn and I. Shade especially would be disappointed if we gave up. Sure there would be other dances but I knew that Halloween was special to him as well as Farley being here.
"I think we should call it off," I say slowly, not believing my own words. Neither does Cal. "You don't give up, not like this." I whirl around ready to snap at him but his soft gaze stops me. This wasn't right. He shouldn't be looking at me like that. Not when I was the one who had messed up.
"There's something you should know," I say quietly. I needed to get this done and over with. The plan was off anyway with everyone else gone.
His eyebrows raise at the change in subject. Still he waits for me to continue.
"Do remember the guy I bumped into?"
"Kinda hard to forget when you smell like fruit salad and an LCBO store."
"That was Will...my...ex."
Confusion is what I see flash first. Then understanding.
"The guy who stood you up," he states. It wasn't a question.
"Yes."
This was the difficult part. My fingers twitched as I restrained myself from running.
"A few months ago," I continue, "I was out at a party. Typical night except that...it wasn't."
I suck in a breath. There was no stopping now. Still, the words refused to pass my lips.
Cal inches closer. His thumb grazes my hand and his lips part. "God, you're freezing Mare." His arms encircle me and I pull away. I don't miss the hurt in eyes before they go blank. It was better this way. At least now it wouldn't hurt so much.
"I slept with him Cal. I wasn't thinking straight...neither was he. It was a mistake. I'm--" my throat closes up and I struggle to keep tears from falling. "I'm sorry," I whisper. "You deserve so much more. That's why I couldn't and still can't talk to you. It hurts to even look at you," I add softly.
I want to look away from the storm of emotions flashing across his face but I force myself to watch. This is what I deserved for my foolish actions.
He's silent for a while. So am I. The words were still sinking in. There was no way he could forgive me. But still, I feel the hope rising in my chest before I'm forced to shove it down.
"I..I need to go," he forces out. I swear I see the glimmer of tears in his eyes. Cal turns away sharply before twisting through the crowd. I feel the piercing gaze of fellow students as they stopped to stare. I got a few sympathetic smiles and I let out an defeated sigh at the sight of them. I really knew how to pick my spots.
"Was that Tiberias Calore?" a soft voice at my right asks. I turn to face them and find Elane Haven watching his retreating form now swallowed up by the crowd. "Unfortunately so," I reply. I look her in the eyes. "What do you want? To gloat over my failed love life?"
Elane snorts. "If only I had enough energy to care." Her brown eyes soften slightly as she says, "But I do know how screwed up a relationship can be. It's worth it in the end though, the tears and the pain. You just have to be willing to fight for them, even if that means risking your pride."
I'm taken off guard. Never would I have expected Elane Haven to be giving me advice on love. Maybe on my outfit with a sneer but not this.
She places a hesitant hand on my, arm the touch so light that it's almost unrecognizable. "You should go after him."
I bite my lip and laugh, shaking my head mockingly. "I'm sorry, but why the hell are you doing this? What happened to 'thrift store fashion died two years ago Barrow, take a hint?' What kind of twisted game are you playing now, Haven?"
She sniffs. "And yet you still dress like a-" I clear my throat. "Okay look, the same thing happened with me and Evangeline. But it was your brother who told me the same thing I'm telling you now. If he hadn't..." she trails off. "I love Eve so much that hurts to think what would be now if I hadn't fought for her and with her," she laughs a little. Her gaze is solemn. "You care about him, so go before you lose him forever."
I let out a shaky breath. Shade comforted Elane and encouraged her to go after Evangeline? That was something new. Perhaps a piece in the puzzle if what had really happened. But her words rang true. It sounded like something Shade would say if he were here right now. Well...if he and Cal were on better terms.
"Thanks Elane." The words unsettle us both.
"Don't mention it," she smiles though it's strained. "Seriously, don't ever mention this again. To anyone."
I laugh lightly, sniffing a little. My cheeks feel wet from tears I hadn't even known had been there. "If only you extend the same courtesy."
"I will, believe me. Now hurry, if he's not gone by now."
Then I'm off. Running through the halls. They whip past me, locker after locker. Rain pours in sheets outside and distantly thunder rumbles. A storm.
I can't see him anywhere. It's so impossibly dark and clouds roll overhead, blocking out the faint glow of the moon. This is it, he's gone. I'm breathing heavily now, breaking down into sobs. My dress is soaked through probably making it sheer. I wrap myself tighter in his jacket and inhale the scent. He'd forgotten it, I think weakly. How could I be so stupid? I kick at the soda cans littering the parking lot in frustration. In my haze of self pity I barely even notice the car that comes to a screeching halt in front of me. The bright lights momentarily blind me from seeing the driver. They get out of the car and the door slams shut.
"Oh my god are you-" the words freeze on their tongue and I wait for the flashes of white to disappear.
"I'm really sorry," I croak out. "I don't even know why I came out here in the first place." I laugh sarcastically. "Actually I do know, see, I was running out here all rom-com like in the rain hoping to stop the guy I love from leaving. But he's gone so-"
"The guy you love?" the stranger says so softly I barely hear him.
"Mhm, it's all very terribly romantic I'm afraid. Anyways, I'm sorry-"

Self-weighing, self-awareness may prevent holiday weight gain
(Reuters Health) – – A brief program that encouraged people to track their weight and to be mindful of the excess energy in every holiday cookie or cup of nog seems to have helped participants get through the holiday season without gaining weight.

The trial in the UK recruited participants in November and December of 2016 and 2017, and followed up with them about 45 days later. Those assigned to the weight-gain prevention program ended up losing 0.13 kg (about one third of a pound), on average, while the control group gained 0.37 kg (nearly a pound), the study team reports in The BMJ.
“On Christmas Day alone, someone might consume 6,000 calories, or three times the recommended daily allowance,” said a coauthor of the study, Amanda Farley of the University of Birmingham.
“We were unsure how well the public would respond to the idea of controlling their food and drink over Christmas,” Farley told Reuters Health by email. “But we found that participants were very motivated.”
Past research has found that holiday periods are often when people put on extra pounds, but they don’t tend to lose that weight after the holidays are over. Since even a holiday weight gain of just a pound or two each year will add up over a decade, the study team wanted to explore tactics to help prevent putting on weight in the first place.
They recruited 272 adults who were told only that they would participate in a study of winter weight gain. About half were randomly assigned to receive a general brochure on healthy living.
The other half got advice to weigh themselves frequently, ideally every day, record their weight, and “reflect on weight trajectory.” They also got 10 tips for weight management, as well as a graphical list of holiday foods showing the amount of exercise that would be required to offset the calorie content of each – for instance, expending the calories in a mince pie requires 21 minutes of running, and a small glass of mulled wine requires 32 minutes of walking.
The 10 tips for weight management included sticking to a regular meal routine, choosing reduced fat options, walking 10,000 steps daily, opting for healthy snacks, reading food labels, thinking twice about large portions and seconds, breaking up sitting time, reducing alcoholic and sweet drinks, slowing down while eating and aiming to include five servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
About 80 percent of the participants were women, roughly one third in the normal weight range, more than one third overweight, and the rest obese.
The researchers’ goal was for participants to gain no more than half a kilo, or about one pound, over the holiday period.
Instead, the research team found that the intervention group, on average, lost a little weight while the control group gained a bit. The difference in weight gain between the groups was 0.49 kg, a little over one pound, a statistically meaningful amount, the study team concludes.
Based on questionnaire responses at the follow-up, people in the intervention group also scored higher for practicing “cognitive restraint.” However, there were no significant differences between the groups in changes in body fat percentage, emotional eating or uncontrolled eating.
“Many people gain weight over Christmas, but that is not inevitable,” Farley said. “It is possible to demonstrate some restraint of eating and drinking and build in simple ways to be active while still enjoying the festive season.”
Few randomized controlled trials have studied effective programs to combat the year-end bloat, noted Dale Schoeller of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, who wasn’t involved in the study.
Although this study showed a change, it’s hard to say which aspect was effective, Schoeller said.
“It would be interesting to take this program apart and try to understand what changes led to the prevention of weight gain,” he said in a phone interview. “Did restraint with food or alcohol, or compensating with exercise, make the difference, or was it a combination?”
In this study, the majority of participants were white women in their 40s. Future studies should include different communities and could tailor the tips to appeal to different audiences and countries, said Rolando Giovanni Diaz Zavala of the University of Sonora in Hermosillo, Mexico, who also wasn’t involved in the research.
“Once people are overweight, there are metabolic and neuroendocrine changes (possibly irreversible) that fight to regain weight lost,” he said in an email. “Preventing weight gain seems to be the smartest strategy.”

The Top 11 Food Trend Predictions of 2017 (Plants, Plants, and More Plants!)
The Top 11 Food Trend Predictions of 2017 (Plants, Plants, and More Plants!): from Home Page - Organic Authority, on Jan 18iStock/vonEisenstein At long last, we've said goodbye to the trends of 2016 (La Croix water, Frosé, and cricket flour, to name a few) and are so ready to renew our palate and menu. We've scoured social media and Pinterest, checked in with the experts at Whole Foods Market and Google, and racked our brains for the buzziest, healthiest, and most organic food and wellness trends for the upcoming year. Say hello to our top food trend predictions for 2017. Organic Authority Food Trend Predictions for 2017 1. Turmeric everywhere With inflammation becoming a dirty word in the health and wellness community (it's linked to arthritis, obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease), consider fighting it with anti-inflammatory foods, like turmeric, the nutritional equivalent of powdered gold. Turmeric may be the queen of anti-inflammatory foods thanks to its potent antioxidants and compounds. Clinically proven to reduce pain and symptoms associated with chronic inflammation, “Turmeric has been shown to be as effective as ibuprofen in reducing joint pain caused by arthritis, and does not carry the potential to harm the liver,” says Lori Kenyon Farley, the co-author of The Juice Cleanse Reset Diet Book and cofounder of Project Juice. “In fact, its enzymes have been shown to help detoxify the liver and enhancing blood circulation.” Even more, turmeric's main healing component – curcumin – promotes digestion and helps the body to get rid of intestinal parasites. According to Google's food trends report of 2016, turmeric had a major year, and is only projected to rise. Look for turmeric in teas, wellness elixirs, golden milks in local coffee shops, smoothies, soups, snack bars (we love Larabar's turmeric, ginger, and beet bar), hummus, and so much more. iStock/moisseyev 2. Produce will get uglier According to USDA estimates, the U.S. trashes about one-third of its food supply, while globally a whopping 2.9 trillion pounds of food are wasted a year. The National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), an environmental action group, calculates food waste at 40 percent of total production. USA Today notes that this astronomical amount of food waste is equivalent to “purchasing five bags of groceries at the store, dropping two of them in the parking lot, and walking away.” Why so much waste? Consumers have come to expect perfect produce at the supermarket. This means flawlessly shiny apples, bright white heads of cauliflower, and bulbous bell peppers. As a result, farmers toss unmarketable produce on account of it being just too ugly too sell. Luckily, times are a changing. Numerous grocery chains throughout the country are selling so called “ugly” produce and helping to cut back food waste significantly. This include ugly produce programs at west coast grocery chain, Raley's, Associated Foods in Utah, health food giant Whole Foods Market, and Walmart, the largest supermarket chain in the U.S.. Walmart is now selling ugly apples in select locations. Even startups are getting in on the ugly food action. Imperfect Produce, a California company delivers ugly fruits and vegetables sourced directly from farms to consumers, in the model of a traditional CSA. And, bonus: these misshapen funny looking fruits and vegetables may be more nutritious, along with being cheaper than their conventional-looking counterparts. When it comes to produce, don't judge an apple by its shape. Or shine. iStock/Lorraine Boogich 3. Breakfast will get savory We've had it with sugar, right? The white sparkly stuff is linked to obesity, type-2 diabetes, dementia, and increased risk of early mortality. The problem with sugar, of course, is that it's lurking in many grocery store products, most notably breakfast items. Cereals, muffins, pastries, granola, instant oatmeal, yogurt, and protein bars are just a few of the many breakfast foods loaded with refined and artificial sugar. Avoiding sugar means avoiding most of these packaged and overly processed breakfast foods and going for a more savory morning meal. This year, a shift will occur on the breakfast table. Avocado toast, pasture-raised eggs, grain bowls with vegetables, sweet potatoes with plain yogurt, fermented vegetables, savory pancakes, soups, and even bona fide leafy green salads will be a new kind of breakfast of champions. iStock/villagemoon 4. Wellness tonics for everyone Welcome to the world of wellness tonics, as in, adding adaptogenic herbs, medicinal mushrooms, superfoods, grass-fed collagen, and hyper-functional ingredients to beverages. Whole Foods Market notes this year “will usher in a new wave of tonics, tinctures and wellness drinks that go far beyond the fresh-pressed juice craze.” With brands like REBBL and Dirty Lemon offering up buzzy sips (Ashwagandha chai, anyone?) at major grocery stores and health-minded coffee shops and cafes, such as Los Angeles-based Moon Juice, adding more and more tonics to their menus, wellness tonics are poised for a takeover. These beverages not only offer up scores of health benefits, but taste seriously delicious, too. Look for functional ingredients like maca, ashwagandha, reishi, cordyceps, cacao, lion's mane, and turmeric finding their way into a wellness drink near you – and reap the serious benefits while you sip. iStock/BruceBlock 5. Purple-powered produce Take note, trend spotters, Whole Foods Market says that purple will be the it hue of 2017 – at least in the produce aisle. Purple cauliflower, blackberries, purple potatoes, beets, and asparagus are just a few of the jewel-toned fruits and vegetables at the grocery store and farmers markets boasting numerous health properties. These vibrant fruits and vegetables owe their brilliant hues to anthocyanins, phytochemicals with potent antioxidant properties. A comprehensive review of anthocyanin compounds published in the Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology, notes that these phytochemicals may provide protection from DNA damage and  enzyme inhibition, while helping to regulate immune response, provide anti-inflammatory activity, and strengthen cell membranes. Change up your plate in 2017. Swap traditional orange sweet potatoes and white cauliflower for their purple counterparts. Not only do they add beneficial antioxidants to the diet, but they'll make your meal (and Instagram feed) that much prettier, too. iStock/marekuliasz 6. Grains get even more ancient 2017 is here to usher in even more ancient grains, notably nutrient powerhouses like teff, sorghum, and kamut. Teff, a gluten-free grain and staple of Ethopian cuisine, is a great source of protein and iron, fiber, and calcium. Teff's calcium content is truly impressive; just one cup of cooked teff contains 123 milligrams, the highest calcium content of any grain. Sorghum, another gluten-free grain, is the fifth largest cereal crop in the world. It's a sustainable crop that is naturally tolerant to drought and frequently consumed by populations throughout the world, particularly in Africa. Unlike other grains, sorghum has an edible hull that isn't removed during process. This means that filling up on this grain will provide ample fiber (48 percent daily value in one cup!), protein, calcium, iron, phosphorus, and B vitamins. Kamut is actually the brand name for Khorasan wheat, an ancient relative of durum wheat notably high in protein and nutrients. It's a seriously ancient grain; legends say Khorasan wheat made it onto Noah's ark and was even found in King Tut's tomb. Compared to modern, processed wheat, kamut is a clear choice winner for health benefits. It's filled with zinc, magnesium, selenium, protein, and fiber. These ancient grains can be used in a variety of recipes including breakfast porridges, salads, grain dishes and bowls, soups, stews, and even popped like popcorn, in the case of sorghum. iStock/marekuliasz 7. Coconut is the new black 2017 is going to be all coconut, all of the time. As fear of fat is officially being replaced by healthy fat awareness (hello, avocado and nut butters), foods and products containing healthy fats, like coconut, are becoming dietary staples. This is another trend Whole Foods Market says will be on the rise in 2017. We've already professed our love for coconut oil as a indispensable part of our daily routine (body moisturizer, eye cream, sauté ingredient, baking superstar, etc.), but what about coconut cream, coconut flour, coconut meat, coconut milk, coconut sugar, and coconut flakes? These super versatile (and super delicious) coconut products are easily used in the kitchen and suitable for several dietary restrictions as well. Coconut and coconut products boast major health benefits  and provide healthy fats, minerals, and essential vitamins too. Notably, coconuts contain a particular type of saturated fat known as medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), fatty acids that are of a medium length. These types of fats are easily metabolized in the body, therefore providing a boost of quick cellular energy. 2017 will be coco-NUTS. iStock/InaTs 8. Yogurt will get whole. Could 2017 be the year that sugary low-fat, no-fat yogurt finally goes away for good? We're hopeful that whole versions of plain yogurt (and kefir!) will take the grocery store shelves by storm. Whole milk yogurt of cow, water buffalo, sheep, goat, and yes, coconut are posed to become versatile and delicious kitchen ingredients. As a fermented food, yogurt boasts numerous health properties. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition notes that this is most likely due to yogurt's  high amount of lactic acid bacteria, friendly bacteria that promote gut health. The study notes, that consuming yogurt has “promising health benefits for certain gastrointestinal conditions, including lactose intolerance, constipation, diarrheal diseases, colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, Helicobacter pylori infection, and allergies.” When it comes to choosing the best yogurt brand, look for a whole fat, grass-fed, organic version with minimal sugar. Brands we love: Siggis Dairy, Wallaby Organic, Noosa Yoghurt, Smàri Organic Iceland Yogurt, Redwood Hill Farm goat yogurt, and Coyo coconut milk yogurt. Whole yogurt can be used on toast, in sweet potatoes, salad dressings, dips and marinades, sauces, and mixed with fresh fruit for a perfect snack. iStock/Trexdigital 9. You'll drink charcoal. Prepare to swap out your normal green juice for black version, containing activated charcoal, instead. Activated charcoal is a black, powdered substance usually made from coconut shells or other natural sources. This substance has been used for centuries as a potent toxin remover and detoxifying substance. Activated charcoal works by binding positively charged toxic particles into the nooks and crannies of its negatively charged pores. When opposites attract, in the case of toxins and charcoal, the substances bind together and are then expelled  from the body. Hello detox! Activated charcoal beverages (note: NOT the type of charcoal found in your BBQ) hit the aisles last year in a big way, and are projected to increase this year. Juice Generation has three activated flavors, including Activated Lemonade, Activated Greens, and Activated Protein. Juice Served Here serves up Charcoal Lemonade that also contains montmorillonite clay. Suja created 1,000 bottles of its buzzy Midnight Tonic, containing activated charcoal and cold-pressed juice, which sold out online nearly instantly. iStock/druvo 10. Cannabis will be the new superfood. Yes, cannabis. With several U.S. states legalizing both recreational and/or medical marijuana, cannabis is becoming more and more mainstream in the wellness and health community. In fact, many consider it a total superfood for the mind and body. Cannabis products in small doses (far below the U.S. legal limit of 0.03 percent THC) do not get you high and instead are used to improve sleep, reduce stress and anxiety, and soothe muscle pain and soreness. Studies have continuously shown the herb's potent medicinal benefits from healing the brain after a traumatic injury to controlling epileptic seizures, preventing cancer from spreading, and even slowing the progression of Alzheimer's disease among others. Look for cannabis products such as edibles, oils, teas and wellness elixirs, beauty products, chocolates, supplements, juices, and more throughout 2017. iStock/mpessaris 11. Plant-based diets go mainstream. Following a plant-based diet has never been easier, or more popular. As the pile of evidence continues to grow as to why a plant-based diet is seriously healthy and better for the planet, more and more people are taking note. Dr. Neal Barnard, founder and president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, tells the Huffington Post, “The popularity of plant-based diets has been growing exponentially for years, and now we are at a cultural turning point and a scientific turning point.” According to Dr. Barnard, restaurants are adding more vegan options, too, “Chipotle added the wildly successful tofu Sofrita. Even Dunkin' Donuts now carries almond milk,” and he notes popular celebrities are on board, too, “like Ellen DeGeneres, Joaquin Phoenix, and Peter Dinklage — are all very vocal about their healthful diets.” he says. From Beyond Meat's Beyond Burger – a pea-protein-based burger with a meaty texture and a beet center that allows the burger to actually bleed – to Kite Hill's nut based vegan cheeses that spread, melt, and do other cheese-like things, the plant-based food market is exploding. Almond milk (now happily found at Starbucks!) and other nondairy milks are poised to be 2017's creamy, white drinks of choice. The Nielsen Company notes that in the past five years, sales of dairy-free alternative milks (like almond and coconut) have grown 250 percent to more than $894.6 million in 2015. During this same time, sales of dairy milk shrunk by more than one billion. Almond milk, cashew cheese, coconut yogurt, lentil-based burgers, and tempeh have never been so trendy – and delicious.
