Final Fantasy X-2 Game Review
March 30, 2024
Tumblr media
I know this game gets a lot of hate and even when it's not "hate", I still find the comments to be generally harsh. I promise, it's okay to say something nice about X-2. No one is going to hurt you!
Battle System
I love the battle system in this game, it's fun and fast-paced. Final Fantasy X-2 relies on Garment Grids and Dresspheres for battles. Dresspheres are the names of the class jobs (Black Mage, Thief, etc.) and they each have a unique look for each girl. Most of them have the same abilities for all 3 characters, but a few of them (like the Festivalist and Mascot) have unique abilities for each character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Garment Grids are a game screen with nodes where you equip the dresspheres onto, then you equip each character with a Garment Grid. Whatever dresspheres are on their equipped Garment Grid are the jobs they are able to use and master. Mastering a dressphere means that you learned all of the abilities and skills on that specific dressphere.
Yuna, Rikku, and Paine make up your 3-person party. The HD Remaster version has something called "Creature Creator", and from what I understand, you're able to have non-playable characters and fiends in your party. I've never used it though, so I have no idea what it's like. I couldn't imagine playing this game without YRP as my party.
Characters
The Gullwings is a sphere-hunting group comprised of Yuna, Rikku, Paine, Brother, Buddy, and Shinra. They are a silly bunch, each adding their unique flairs to make a well-rounded character group.
We meet many NPCs throughout our journey, many who will be remembered from from Final Fantasy X. The game adds a lot of new characters too, including leaders of groups and factions that have sprung up around Spira.
When played to completion, you are able to see how the threads of each person connect to one another. Even if you don't get 100%, you still see the bonds between them all. Granted, you really need to do a lot more than just the initial Hot Spots! That's the thing about this game, you can miss so much if you don't know where to look.
Gameplay
The game is built with a completion system. While the battle system gives you a lot of freedom, the narration of this game is greatly dependent on doing things in an exact order. This is not the kind of game you play on a whim. You need a strategy guide or at least a 100% completion checklist. It is so easy to miss completion points, and when you are only using Buddy's location list as a guide, you will miss a lot of things!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You are also given a lot of on-screen options which will greatly affect future events, to the point of blocking off complete locations. Nothing is necessarily a wrong choice, but if you want "100% Complete" in one playthrough, there are definitely wrong choices!
While I can see how needing a checklist can make the game feel like a "chore", since you're looking at a to-do list, I think the reward is worth it. (I also just really like lists. *shrug*) My point is, using a guide guarantees you won't miss anything!
And I suppose I'm stressing this so much because I watched a gamer play Final Fantasy X-2 for the first time on Twitch. She did not follow a guide and, not surprisingly, she was unhappy with the game and admitted to not understanding the story.
I used the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster strategy guide by Brady Games and I used this 100% completion guide on GameFAQs as well as this one by KG21.
Graphics/Art
The game looks great and has one of the nicest menus I have ever seen in a video game! I think the menu is clearly defined and organized well. The outfits in this game are top tier and I always love seeing the transformation scenes (but only once, because we have battles to win!). I made a video just talking about the looks of Final Fantasy X-2, you can watch it here: Dresspheres Critique [video].
Music/Sound
One of the best soundtracks in the Final Fantasy series, and hands down the prettiest main menu/title menu theme. Yuna's Ballad is also very beautiful, the battle themes are fun, and I actually prefer the Besaid Island theme in this game than in Final Fantasy X.
youtube
There are two vocal songs: Real Emotion (the upbeat intro song) and 1,000 Words (the beautiful, melancholic song played later in the game). I think the movies that play with these songs are some of the prettiest scenes in the game! The music also helps highlight the Songstress dressphere.
Also, at the start and end of each battle, the girls have one-liners either pumping each other up or congratulating their win. They will also say something when a new event happens, such as when they acknowledge their first time wearing a dressphere. Paine in particular is quite funny when she first dons the Tonberry Mascot dressphere. 🤭
Overall
I love this game. I think it's adventurous, sad, mysterious, reflective, and inspiring. Yes, there are silly moments sprinkled in, but it's fine. This is a different time than Final Fantasy X! After all, Sin is gone.
While Sin may no longer attack, in his wake he left behind a haunting in the hearts of Spira. Individuals and communities are no longer connected from the universal fear they once felt, the glue that tied them together as one.
In Final Fantasy X-2, we see the people of Spira dealing with this new freedom from fear, joining groups to find identity and life purpose. From The Gullwings' perspective, specifically playing as Yuna, we witness Spira's grief, hatred, confusion, friendship, and healing, not just from those in the present but from the past, too.
As mentioned above, it's a story that plays out best when as much of the completion points can be achieved.

Lets see my progress so far with Dresspheres
Gun Mage: 95 percent for all three of the girls. I think I need to go to that area in Bevelle in chapter 5 for the final Blue Bullet abilities.
100 percents so far
Yuna: Gunner, Songstress as far as I can get in chapter 3, same for her Special Dressphere ( Rikku and Paine’s special spheres are also maxed out as much as I could so far ) , Warrior, Dark Knight, Samurai, Black Mage, White Mage
Rikku: Thief, White Mage, Black Mage, Alchemist
Paine: Warrior, Dark Knight, Black Mage, White Mage, Festivalist
I do want to get Rikku 100 percent on Warrior just because its ridonkulously easy to level that one. Just spam Sentinel once you learn it.
Atm I’m leveling Samurai with Rikku. Trainer for Yuna and Paine for fun. I’ll probably level Rikku with Trainer after Samurai and Warrior.

Final Fantasy X-2 HD Remaster Part 1 - Chapter 1 & 2 on YRP’s Adventures
Tumblr media
I still think that for all the dress spheres, only the main ones (including the songstress) had effort put into it because I remember the rest being pretty ugly lmao. . Anyway! Always happy to see Rikku. Not too fond of her costume since she’s barely wearing anything LOL, but I guess it suits her despite that. Leblanc the thief dancing in the form of Yuna is still weird lol, I know she took her garment grid but does that make her take on her face etc too?? Lol, I never understood that. I always find it so funny to go touch the crouched Yuna wearing the moogle costume to heal your HP/MP hahaha. I remember everything about the introduction so not much to say besides, I wonder when Yuna learnt to use a gun? Still think Yuna’s Gunner costume is like female Tidus, but I guess since the focus of FFX-2 is her seeing a sphere of Shuyin thinking it’s Tidus so she goes around looking for similar spheres to see if she can somehow find him again, it’s a very fitting costume haha. Brother learning their language to communicate better with Yuna is so cute. Anyway, let’s see if I enjoy FFX-2! I don’t remember much about it but I remember thinking it was okay…hahaha.
I still remember the running after and beating Leblanc to the top of the Mt Gagazet ruin in a limited amount of time! I remember thinking it was so annoying because I was so lost the first time I did it, and the timer being annoying didn’t help hahaha. Think I missed one item but whatever, I got there with like plenty of time to spare XD The most memorable optional visit is definitely the Luca one, I think it’s so funny to see Yuna’s perspective of the beginning, since she had to hide in a moogle costume whilst Rikku and Paine dealt with Leblanc the thief haha. Yuna’s so expressive in her moogle costume that it was pretty funny. Dona and Barthello in Luca are as meh as usual, never been fond of Dona haha. Running through Mi'ihen highroad was dangg tiring though, so many battles loll, the encounter rate is high. Oh well, I guess I learn my skills that way.
I remember visiting the Youth League headquarters and talking to Maechen, he gives a nice little background on what happened in these two years and how the Youth League came to be so it’s worth a listen even if it’s a bit long. Considering that Clasko enjoyed taking care of chocobos, I’m not sure why he’s playing tour guide here, at least he follows us along on the airship after? LOL when he asks if he can come along and the no option is “sorry loser”, so mean hahahaha. I also remember the mission at the Moonflow where you have to protect the hypello from bandits! I remember failing in the past hahahaah, I guess I’m better now since I did it on the first try?
Gippal was and will always be my favourite new guy in FFX-2, Nooj and Baralai have always been pretty meh to me. Gippal is funny, cool and pretty cute. I guess alike others, I would ship him with Rikku hahaha. As the leader of the machine faction, he’s doing a lot of good for Spira as well since he’s helping to improve their lives, such as fixing the lightning rods in the Thunder Plains so that we’ll never need to dodge lightning ever again hahaha! I still remember Macalania Woods very well because I really love how ethereal it all looks and since Tidus and Yuna had their scene here, it’s hard to not think it’s a beautiful place. So really, thinking about how the Fayth not being here anymore is causing the woods to slowly die is just so saddening. It only adds to the sadness to see the once proud Guado be left scattered everywhere, hiding in Macalania and other places after not being able to fend off the Ronsos that came for revenge. Considering how much the Guado did in support for Seymour, it’s difficult to not hate them, nevertheless it’s still sad though.
The Calm Lands seem even more vast now, so many mini games but yeah omg, that publicity campaign for one of the companies there, I remember that! I remember thinking it was so annoying lol. Had to track my footsteps and go back to all the places I went to, just to talk to all these people to get those publicity points zzzz. Argent it is btw! Seeing Kimahri as elder is really nice, too bad his job is difficult so it’s hard to get the approval of everyone there, but he’s trying so I’m happy. Wakka and Lulu expecting a baby is all I remember about Besaid haha. It was bad of Yuna to leave without telling anyone but I think it was the right choice, it was about time Yuna got the freedom she could never have and explore the world she saved. I remember silly Wakka hoping to find a sphere of his parents so that he could see how he should act as a father, but really, he just needs to act how he thinks he should and learn from there, no one knows how to be a parent from the start.
Lol, Yuna and them were so happy to steal that awesome sphere from both New Yevon and the Youth League and then felt bad so decided to return it to one of them? Okay lol. I’d definitely choose to give it back to the Youth League, so thankfully you have to choose them to get the 100% completion. I mean, New Yevon just continues to hide things all the time, like all these spheres etc, how do they want people to trust them? Well, Beclem (the guy that lets you play gunners gauntlet) is such an ass, no respect for the person that brought about the Eternal Calm, actually, he’s got no basic respect for even her as a person, zzzz. Otherwise, gunners gauntlet is a pretty fun game, I’m not bothered to get the points but it’s cool to shoot fiends with different bullets haha. Shelinda being a reporter now is very fascinating… Considering that she’s left the temples because she didn’t want to be ordered around like a slave anymore, why does she still wear her temple garments? Where’s her makeover lol. Seeing Calli (the girl that was excited for the Calm in FFX on the Mi'ihen highroad) was nice, just because it really shows that time has passed and people had the room to grow up doing what they want. Not sure if chocobo rights are best argued by saying we should get to ride them throughout the highroad since I feel like they should roam free but okay lol. At least the chocobo catching game was a bit fun, seeing it surrender was so cute but saddening lol.
If Yuna really joined the Youth League and got a Yunie Squad, that would be so funny loll. But really, as a high summoner and the person who brought the Calm, I’d agree that she should stay as neutral as possible but side more with the Youth League just because they really do have Spira’s best interests at heart. Not sure what Tobli’s concert is for but if I get the profits, sure thing! Easy way of earning 12,500 gil, yay! The data seller at Guadosalam is cool too! Got 70,000 gil for selling the data to the right person! Could have kept restarting to hopefully get the 100,000 gil but I was too lazy hahaha. As for the Thunder Plains mini games with calibrating the towers though? I hated that, I remember the pain so well lmao. I could only do 6 towers and gave up lolol. Could probably do 7 but if I can’t do all 10 to get the ribbon, why bother? Hahaha, sorry my reaction speed and hand eye coordination just isn’t that great lol. I also want to preserve my sanity. We even got Tobli the musicians at Macalania! Really, Tobli, what are you even doing lmao. Still sad to see them talk about how Macalania Woods is nearing its end since the Fayth are gone… Seriously though, everyone needs help lol, even Clasko deciding to open up a chocobo branch needs YRP to clean out the monster arena and catch chocobos for him lmao. I really wonder what Clasko really did as a soldier if he can’t even clean up some fiends though…🤔 Oh well, whatever, as long as he’s happy lol.
Alike Yuna, seeing Zanarkand as a tourist spot never sat well with me, so if pairing up monkeys can make them multiply and cause a monkey problem that will prevent people from coming, I guess it’s good? Lol, nah, I don’t like the idea of Zanarkand filled with monkeys either lmao, can’t they just label it as a historical site to be preserved? Sigh. Lmao at the way Yuna holds the monkey when you’re pairing them up though, it’s like the Lion King🤣🤣 Seeing that YRP quite blatantly stole the Leblanc syndicate uniforms (and spheres!) at every encounter, you’d think Ormi and Logos would strengthen their security on the premises but nope, YRP easily infiltrates! Also, kinda disappointed in Yuna dipping in the hot spring on Ronso sacred grounds, Kimahri trusted her to understand that so I didn’t think she’d be like the Leblanc goons and do such a thing as well, so yeah… Anyway, Leblanc is so smitten with Nooj, I wonder if he likes her at all? Are they together? That massage game was weird though lolll, I swear FFX-2 has the weirdest mini games to complete. How would I know which part Leblanc wants me to massage?!? Yes, I kept cracking her bones LOL. Anyway, just wanted to say that I’m glad I don’t write walkthroughs because I’ve been steamrolling through these boss battles so I don’t even know what they really do lmao. Paine as a Festivalist, Rikku as a Psychic and Yuna as a Songstress is the team I’ve been levelling and it easily deals with everything besides any instant kill moves lol.
Hmmm so there’s some sort of machina at the bottom of Bevelle called Vegnagun that could destroy all of Spira… Wouldn’t it suck if Yuna brought the Eternal Calm but then they all get killed by this machine? Lol. At least Nooj is aware and hopes to disassemble it before anything happens, guess Gippal might give him a hand? Not sure what Baralai’s objectives are right now though~ I see, so Baralai thinks that Vegnagun is too dangerous and shouldn’t be touched, so he’s stopping everyone from approaching, which is fair enough, what if it activates because you come close or whatever, very risky. Otherwise, underground Bevelle was pretty annoying with all the jumping, operating machines in different ways to get chests, kinda confusing but I guess it’s probably worth it? Lol, always good to get a ribbon! Anyway, fighting Dark Bahamut was kinda saddening, not the way we wanted Yuna to see aeons again, since it wanted to kill them etc. I wonder what happened to Vegnagun and Nooj and Baralai? Where did they all go?

Mezzo Plays Final Fantasy X-2: Part 2
Before we start on the first mission, let's take a look around the airship for a bit. The Celsius is the Gullwings' base of operations, and you return to here after every mission, so it's good to know the way around the place.
Tumblr media
Out on the bridge, we can meet the crew.
Tumblr media
As previously mentioned, Shinra is the inventor of the Garment Grid system. He's kind of the Gullwings' tech guy.
Shinra: "I know everything."
Tumblr media
"At least, it looked like you. I couldn't say for sure. I thought I might find more spheres like it if I joined the Gullwings. So I did. Oh, in case you're wondering, the Gullwings are sphere hunters, and sphere hunters are, well... This! We fly all over Spira. I'm really enjoying myself."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"He really has improved quite a bit. He told me that he practiced just so that he could talk with me more."
For whatever reason, he still goes by 'Brother' in this game. Does he even have a name? Who knows. Talking with him grants a few Al Bhed Primers too. Like in X-1, these translate the Al Bhed language letter by letter.
Talking to him a second time grants you a gift.
Tumblr media
A new dressphere! This unlocks a new job, and can be added to the Garment Grid.
Tumblr media
Here's the Garment Grid, by the way. You equip dresspheres into the slots, and then can switch between them mid-battle, but only between those that are adjacent on the grid. (For example, if you want to switch from Thief to Gunner, you need to switch to Songstress first.) There are many different grids that can be unlocked in due time, some with other benefits. Thankfully, this one has enough spaces for our five dresspheres: Gunner, Thief, Warrior, Songstress, and the new one, Festivalist. This one is based on traditional Japanese festivals, and has different abilities for each character.
Tumblr media
You gain AP for participating in battle as that job, and can select which ability to learn next on this screen. Once the AP requirement is filled, it's ready for use immediately.
Tumblr media
"Buddy and Brother are old friends. Buddy says he was aboard Cid's airship with us two years ago. When I told him I didn't remember, he seemed disappointed."
Buddy's our pilot, and he's the guy to talk to when you want to select a destination.
Tumblr media
Leaving the bridge for now, let's check out the other facilities.
Tumblr media
You can't really do much on the deck, but you get a nice view.
Tumblr media
Over at the cabin, we can meet the friendly bartender.
"Our barkeep's a Hypello. No one knows his real name, so everyone just calls him 'Barkeep.' Brother took him in, and now he works aboard the airship."
He runs the Gullstore and also allows you to rest here if needed.
Tumblr media
On the upper floor of the cabin we can see the Gullwings' living quarters. Looks cozy.
Tumblr media
Hold on. I'm not finished with the tour yet.
Tumblr media
The engine room isn't much to look at, but there are a few chests with some recovery items inside. These get restocked every chapter, so it's good to take a look around here on occasion.
Tumblr media
Back on the bridge, Buddy's finished his analysis, and the Gullwings have a destination set.
Tumblr media
"Sacred Mt. Gagazet. Silent guardian of Zanarkand, city of the dead. When the fayth disappeared, the clouds enshrouding the mountain began to thin and disperse, revealing long-forgotten ruins among its peaks."
Tumblr media
The airship drops the Gullwings off near the top of the ruins. It's kind of a precarious landing.
Tumblr media
Eep! Watch your step, Yuna.
Brother: "What's your status?"
Rikku: "Disasterrific!"
Tumblr media
I don't think this is really the time. Thankfully, Rikku and Paine manage to pull Yuna back up.
Tumblr media
Now they can head into the ruins proper.
Tumblr media
Yuna's a bit more acrobatic than in the last game, and holding down A while running lets you jump gaps and climb ledges. Sometimes this can lead to secret treasures.
Tumblr media
Each dressphere comes with its own weapon, so you don't really have to worry about that. The main equip slots are accessories, which each party member can equip up to two of. This one adds lightning resistance and allows the wearer to cast Thunder regardless of job. I decided to put it on Yuna for now.
Tumblr media
This seems like a dead end, but Yuna thinks it might be an elevator.
Tumblr media
It's kind of a rough ride.
Brother: "Disasteriffic? I am on my way!"
Tumblr media
Well, well. Look who it is. "Leblanc. Remember the name well, loves." And she takes the time to call the Gullwings a bunch of amateurs.
Tumblr media
Yeah, she totally was.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We already have to fight these losers again, this time all three at once.
Tumblr media
Rikku's Darkness Dance helped weaken their attacks while the other two finished them off. Also note that Yuna wields Brotherhood as Warrior, which is a nice touch.
Tumblr media
"And this is the thanks I get for going easy on you."
Tumblr media
They head off, and now we've got our mission. It's a race to the top of the ruins, where the sphere awaits.
Tumblr media
The timer here is quite generous, and it pauses while you're in battle or tinkering around with the menu.
Tumblr media
Of course, we have to deal with a few fiends on the way up.
Tumblr media
Plus some more of Leblanc's goons. The Recoils are machina employed by the Leblanc Syndicate. I'm not really sure what's the deal with them, apart from their name being an amazing pun. They're weak to electricity like most machina, so that ring that let Yuna cast Thunder came in quite handy.
Tumblr media
Logos & Ormi: "Sorry, boss."
You have to run through some interior areas too. It's easy to get lost in here, but there's more than enough time to make it through.
Tumblr media
Well, this is awkward. Guess we don't have to worry about that timer anymore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But we do have to worry about this giant enemy crab.
Tumblr media
It's a pretty standard first boss, with no real tricks.
Tumblr media
The Gullwings brought it down in no time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh yes, those grapes are very sour.
Tumblr media
Time to head back.
Tumblr media
Buddy: "Brother? He's not with you?"
Tumblr media
Getting back on board reveals what's going on.
Tumblr media
What an idiot. Thankfully, he's not actually hurt.
Tumblr media
Shinra gets to work. After a few moments, it's ready for viewing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not exactly a great show. Yep, it's junk. However, they can use it as a dressphere.
Tumblr media
Aw yeah. The best job, and quite fashionable too. Expect me to be using this one a lot.
Tumblr media
Buddy's pinpointed two more sphere locations: One on Besaid Island, the other at the Zanarkand Ruins. The Gullwings' next missions are ready, but we'll get to that next time.

Yuna’s Festivalist Dress Sphere
It’s potentially over-powered. The random aspect balances it out a bit (you can’t choose what enemies the spells target and what rank of spell is also random). But if the gaming gods align, there’s a good chance of casting say, Firaga, for 6 MP. The other’s are a bit different. Rikku’s Fish hits 3 times for low DMG per hit and Paine’s masks are status effects.

How To Beat the Via Infinito Bosses in Final Fantasy X-2
March 28, 2024
Tumblr media
I have played Final Fantasy X-2 since I was a kid, but I have never made it through all 100 levels of the Via Infinito dungeon. I have always stopped at Cloister 20 because this dungeon is tough!
However, this time around I decided I would actually attempt to beat all the bosses, including the scary Paragon and super scary Trema. (999,999 HP!?!)
Younger Me would be ecstatic to know that I actually did it! And while it was hard, it wasn't THAT bad. It just takes patience and strategy. Here's what I did for each boss fight.
Cloister 20 - Aranea (18,280 HP/178 MP)
Yuna: Berserker, Rikku: Psychic, Paine: Festivalist Character levels: in the 50's to 60's range This is just a typical boss fight. I attacked and healed as necessary.
Cloister 40 - Black Elemental (9,999 HP/2,380 MP)
Yuna: Berserker, Rikku: Songstress, Paine: Festivalist Character levels: mid to high 70's This one was super hard until I switched Rikku to a Songstress. I had her "dance" the ability "Magical Masque" which nullifies all magical attacks while she's dancing. This stopped Black Elemental from causing any damage. While Rikku danced, I had Yuna and Paine quickly attacking until it died.
Cloister 60 - Concherer (343,280 HP/170 MP)
Yuna: Thief, Rikku: Dark Knight, Paine: Dark Knight Character levels: in the 80's range I equipped Thief Yuna with Cat Nip (causes 9,999 damage when HP is low) and a Haste Bangle (Auto-Haste when HP is low). I put Rikku and Paine as Dark Knights because I needed them to have high defense. I was also using Rikku and Paine as my item healers whenever necessary. Thief is very fast and with their 2 daggers, they are hitting 9,999 twice each turn.
Cloister 80 - Chac (437,850 HP/820 MP)
Yuna (Lvl 87): Thief, Rikku (Lvl 89): Mascot, Paine (Lvl 92): Mascot SOUL SPRINGS or MANA SPRINGS are a must! Thief Yuna has Cat Nip and Haste Bangle (see above), and Rikku and Paine are both wearing the Mascot dressphere. They were equipped with HP+ accessories and Speed Bracers which casts Auto-Haste. Chac is super fast so having Auto-Haste helps! I didn't have any Soul Springs but I did have 7 Mana Springs. They both take MP away from the enemy. I tossed 4 Mana Springs and depleted Chac's MP enough to where she could not cast Heaven's Cataract anymore. This is a game-changer because it deals so much damage to all 3 characters. You still have to be fast enough to cure Petrification (because the Ribbon is useless, unfortunately) but besides that, having Heaven's Cataract gone makes this battle a lot easier. You also have to get lucky that she doesn't Petrify your Cat Nip + Haste Thief! (Or at least be fast enough to heal them!) The first time I beat Chac, Rikku was obliterated and Paine died, Yuna survived and she was able to evade all of Chac's attacks and eventually took her down alone. But I wasn't happy with that, so I played it again and successfully kept all 3 girls alive!! (That's why I say you have get lucky, but it IS possible to keep all 3 girls alive.)
Cloister ∞ - Paragon (200,000 HP/9,999 MP)
Yuna (Lvl 96): Mascot, Rikku (Lvl 98): Thief, Paine (Lvl 99): Mascot I switched Rikku to a Thief because I wanted to use the Moogle Mascot's white magic. I kept Paine as a Mascot and had her using the Cactling Gun ability (causes 9,999 damage each time).
Yuna and Paine were equipped with an Oath Veil (Magic Defense +60) and a Ribbon. I also equipped the Higher Power Garment Grid because it allowed them to break the HP limit. Immediately at the start of the fight, I used a Chocobo Wing (casts Haste on the party) and a Stamina Tonic (doubles the party's HP). Then I used X-potions to raise their HP to around 12,000. Yuna focuses on healing with Moogle Cure, and they both throw Phoenix Downs at Rikku whenever necessary.
Rikku had Cat Nip and a Haste Bangle equipped as well as the Highroad Winds Garment Grid (First Strike). She was hitting 9,999 attacks twice each turn.
Cloister ∞ - Trema (999,999 HP/999 MP)
Yuna (Lvl 96): Mascot, Rikku (Lvl 98): Thief, Paine (Lvl 99): Mascot Immediately after defeating Paragon, you are thrown into a fight with Trema. Yuna died in the previous fight so I had to QUICKLY use a Phoenix Down, then Chocobo Feather and Stamina Tonic + X-Potion. I also used Elixers and Turbo Ethers because Paine's Cactling Gun uses up a lot of MP. Rikku was doing the same as before, she was just attacking each turn. Yuna's focus was ONLY to cure this time. Whenever she or Paine were around 6,000 HP I would use an X-Potion or Elixir. Around 9,000 I would use Moogle Cure to bump them back to around 12,000. Thankfully the Mascot dresspheres have incredible defense and magic defense (plus the added Oath Veils +60 magic defense helped a ton.) This was very much a slow and steady match, but very possible!

The best dresspheres to use in Final Fantasy X-2
May 1, 2022
Tumblr media
When I first played this game in 5th grade, one of the things I remember obsessing over were the dresspheres. I used to make a list of which character would wear which dressphere, and my method of choosing went something like this: whoever looked the best in that dressphere, they were the one who got it.
For example, Yuna looks the best in the Songstress dressphere, so she would be my Songstress. Paine looks the best in the Warrior dressphere, so she would be my Warrior. It didn’t always work though, because Paine looks the best in the White Mage dressphere, but I had such a hard time with Paine being a White Mage. I always gave that dressphere to Yuna.
Anyways, that was my mindset back in 5th & 6th grade. Thankfully, those days are long gone. This time around, I didn’t focus on looks. I focused on which dresspheres were actually useful and worth my time. Below are the best dresspheres to use in Final Fantasy X-2!
The New-New: Festivalist
This was my first time playing the HD Remaster version of Final Fantasy X-2, so the Festivalist dressphere was completely new to me. I have no idea why it (along with the Psychic dressphere) weren’t in the original release of FFX2, but WOW they are awesome dresspheres!
We get the Festivalist right away and I immediately threw out the Gunner dressphere for Yuna. Her strength was higher with Festivalist and she uses 2 weapons, which gave her a chain attack. I also liked Rikku in the Festivalist outfit, even though she didn’t have a chain attack, her attack strength was much better than Thief. The only times I switched Rikku back to Thief was to steal, otherwise I had her working on Festivalist abilities.
Old Reliable: Black Mage & White Mage
After Yuna mastered the Festivalist abilities, I let her master the Black Mage abilities. I actually regret this, because the Black Mage abilities suck. They are just elemental attacks. When I replay this game, I’m not going to bother with any black magic.
I gave the White Mage dressphere to Rikku because I hate her Black Mage pose. Yes, that is the reason. I liked that Rikku was covered up and still looked super cute in her white robe. She is a great White Mage!
So to recap: Yuna was a Festivalist, then a Black Mage. Rikku was a Festivalist/Thief, then a White Mage.
The Heavy Hitters: Warrior, Gunner, Dark Knight
Things got interesting when I got the Berserker dressphere in Chapter 3, but let me talk about Paine first.
I love Paine in the Warrior dressphere. She stayed in that until she mastered the abilities. Since I still didn’t have the Dark Knight dressphere, I figured she could work on mastering some other abilities so I gave her the Gunner dressphere. It was nice having a long-distance attacker, plus she looks great in the Gunner outfit!
Once I got the Dark Knight dressphere at the end of Chapter 2, I switched Paine to that and that’s what she stayed with until the end of the game. Somewhere along the way I got a Garment Grid that lets the user use any learned Warrior abilities, so let me just say: Dark Knight Paine with Swordplay abilities was absolutely perfect.
The Game-Changers: Berserker & Psychic
Chapter 3 is a great part of the game because it blesses us with some FANTASTIC new dresspheres. This is where I participated in Shinra’s creature creator battle thing and won the Psychic dressphere. I also got the Berserker dressphere in Chapter 3 at Lake Macalania. They were GAME CHANGERS.
I gave Berserker to Yuna because her strength went up so high! And then I gave Rikku the Psychic dressphere because… well, Paine was a Dark Knight, Yuna was a Berserker, and I wanted someone in Psychic, so that left Rikku.
The Berserker dressphere is one of my favorite dresspheres. It gives a good boost in strength and speed, but the best part about it is that the characters can learn Counterattack! This ability came in handy during battles, because I was basically able to double attack or heal + attack, basically all in one round. I loved it so much that I ended up changing Paine OUT of the Dark Knight and putting her in Berserker too. She was so much faster and was able to counterattack along with Yuna. Paine still had the Swordplay abilities, so it was just awesome!
The Psychic dressphere was also great. Once I got the Garment Grid that let the user cast White Magic abilities, I had Rikku dressed as Psychic and casting white magic whenever I needed it. The only thing I wish I had was an accessory that could let her use the Steal ability. Unfortunately, I never had that so I had to switch to Thief whenever I wanted to steal something.

Nearly missed the Dark Knight sphere. Forgot you have to do a stupid puzzle to get it.
I’m making a shit ton of progress with other spheres at least. Rikku only has one last thing to get on Alchemist before it’s finished ( It’s a whopping 999 AP to get but hey free Elixers after that )
For shits n giggles I got 100 percent on Festivalist for Paine. I dunno just seemed funny to have her in such a goofy role. I had nothing else I wanted to train her in atm so I might as well get AP in other dress spheres. With Dark Knight though I got something fitting for her. Chapter 3 is busy because you get a bunch of dress spheres unlocked. Samurai, Lady Luck ( if you tolerate sphere break, seriously fuck that game ) , Trainer, Berserker. The game practically goes “Okay here’s the majority left, have fun farming AP for them”
Seriously a few of these spheres would have benefited from being earlier in the game like Trainer. Ah well.
